Church Services, Events & Local Info Mark Francois MP says “We must save The Bull”

ayleigh and Wickford MP Mark Francois has reacted to the tragic news of the recent fire at The Bull, Hockley with a plea to the pub’s owners Greene King that the pub should be restored to its former glory and reopened as soon as practically possible.

The popular local pub, which is Grade II listed and parts of which date back to the 16th century, was gutted by fire over the weekend. Whilst examinations of the damage are still continuing, it appears that much of the roof has been burnt away and part of the interior (although not all of it) have also been badly damaged by the fire. Fortunately, it appears much of the internal walls are still intact.

Given the importance of this popular asset to the local community, Mark Francois wrote quickly to the management of the pub.

Commenting on his actions, Mark Francois said: “The fire at The Bull has been a tragic event but I am determined to try and prevent this popular venue being lost forever. I have asked to meet with the Chief Executive of Greene King, Mr Rooney Anand, to talk about the future of the pub and what might be necessary in order to save it. I am confident that in this action I will have the support of my constituents, many of whom will have happily visited The Bull down the years. I will endeavour to keep my constituents updated as developments surrounding this important local landmark play out.”

Hockley and District Horticultural Society

ockley and District Horticultural Society have opened their trading hut and will be open from 10am - 12 noon, every Sunday morning until Sunday 28th October 2018.

We are located behind Hawkwell Village Hall with free parking. We have compost, grow bags and all sorts of fertilisers, all at very competitive prices. Membership is £3 per family per year.

There is also friendly advice on various aspects of gardening.

Hockley & Hawkwell Update

H

ow sad to see The Bull was badly damaged by fire, they had just got it looking great. At least no one was hurt and it didn’t spread to Hockley Woods. I am sure everyone will join me in hoping it will rise again from the ashes.

A decision on what will happen with the public toilets in Hockley has been postponed for a year. The proposal was to rebuild them similar to the ones that are nearing completion in Rayleigh. There is no news on Church Road speeding restrictions and the provision of allotments for Hockley.

Fortunately in Hockley there are not many empty shops or empty business units in Eldon Way. The old Barclays Bank building is at last being used again and looking quite smart now that Wells Legal has moved in. I welcome that the Rochford District Residents group are encouraging ‘Courtesy Seating’ for Hockley shops. Waters & Stanton has been sold and planning has gone in again to Rochford District Council to now convert the whole building into 11 flats by adding a forth level. This would mean the loss of a shop and it would also be the first building in Hockley to be that high. The worry is that this would set a precedent for the height of future developments.

There is are a number of proposed developments to replace one or two homes with around ten. We will continue to oppose these developments that fall outside the current district plan and that would increase the pressure on our roads and services.

The developer in Hall Road had reinstalled the milestone behind their fence on the council verge. After a request from the HRA, I am please to see this fence has now been removed.

WAG (Westerings Action Group) are still perusing additional parking restrictions from Essex County Council. Some residents parking signs have already been installed in the Kilnwood Avenue area.

The next Hockley Residents Association meeting will be on Tuesday 11 September 2018 and AGRO (Action Groups Resisting Overdevelopment) meeting will be on Thursday 13 September 2018.

Both meetings will be at 7.30 pm in Greensward Academy. Our meetings are held in Room GG27 in the Creative Arts Block next to the main car park. All are welcome to attend our Monthly Meetings to discuss current issues effecting Hockley.

Triple H Community Choir

T

heTriple H Community Choir is a thriving mixed adult choir, rehearsing on Monday nights at the Hockley and Hawkwell Methodist Church, Main Road, Hockley from 7.30pm till 9.15pm. Each rehearsal costs £5, payable at the door. We usually sing 2-3 concerts per year, all are held locally. We perform a wide range of music, from classical, through to music theatre as well as contemporary popular repertoire. There is NO AUDITION and we particularly welcome those with little confidence in their singing abilities.

There is no requirement to read music, just a love of singing.
