ockley and District Horticultural Society have opened their trading hut and will be open from 10am - 12 noon, every Sunday morning until Sunday 29th October 2017. We are located behind Hawkwell Village Hall with free parking. We have compost, grow bags and all sorts of fertilisers, all at very competitive prices. Membership is £3 per family per year. There is also friendly advice on various aspects of gardening.

Church funerals are more usually held at St Mary's which is a beautiful church offering an intimate setting; it can seat up to 100 people and for those recently living within the parish, lends itself naturally to a burial in the churchyard. Emmanuel, a lovely modern building can seat 200 people. Ashes can be added to an existing family grave or interred in the Ashes Plot. any people criticise the police for not doing their jobs properly but as we all know local police numbers have been reduced to such an extent that they are now practically non existent. All the local police meetings have been reduced to the point that they have virtually finished. That connection with local police has now been lost and the police are now completely out of touch with our residents and our streets. In recent months we have seen a dramatic increase in burglaries in our area. I believe that if we don’t invest more money in our police force, crime and lawlessness will eventually become rampant, even in our relatively low crime area of Hockley. Alan James

he Hockley Area Action Plan (HAAP) for the centre of Hockley Village was started 10 years ago and as far as I can see nothing ever came from it, to the relief of most of us who like Hockley more or less the way it is. Even one of the main items, to turn Eldon Way into a housing estate, has survived unchanged. Many of the existing buildings in Eldon Way have since been renovated and apart from some set backs, at the moment they appear to be doing well. One of the good items in the plan was to improve parking and access at Hockley Station. Again nothing has changed except for double yellow lines recently replacing single ones in Plumberow Avenue. According to social media one of the issues at the moment is cars ignoring the double yellow lines on both sides of the station causing a dangerous congestion at each end of the working day. This could be sorted out by traffic wardens but apparently due to a lack of staff, no one gets a ticket and the yellow lines are ignored. The problem with this area is that a poor design was allowed to be built in the first place but this was in the days before we had so many cars. Proper set down and pick-up areas on both sides of the station should now be provided. Unfortunately on the south side they allowed flats to be built in the way and I am not sure what they could do now to eliminate this issue with the limited space that’s left. They didn’t even make the flats developer provide a pavement to the shop. They should have also lined up Station Approach with Station Road with a set of traffic lights but it’s all too late now. I believe one of the issues is that the land in front of both sides of the station belongs to the Network Rail and it would appear no one Alan James can make them do anything.

This year’s Art Competition and exhibition will be held on Saturday 21 October. Voting will take place between 9.30am and 16.00pm and presentation of awards will be at 16.30pm. All entries have to be about Essex and the People, Places and events that are and happen in Essex. If a painting/photograph or craft is entered, that has nothing to do with the Essex then it will be displayed but not entered into the competition. The Committee of Management will make the decision on who is entered into the competition and who is only displayed. So do not enter a stock picture you have done in the past. There is no limit on the size of the Oil, Acrylic and other Canvases this year but if you enter a big picture please provide your own stand.

Children can either draw or paint their own picture but if they are only colouring we can provide a set colouring sheet for them to use. Their pictures should be no bigger than A4. CHILDRENS ENTRIES ARE FREE. All entries need to handed in by 14th October to 43 Oak Walk, Hockley, Essex, SS5 5AR and collected on the day or arranged for collection from the Secretaries house. The prizes will presented in Cheque form or gift card no cash is given. Runners up prizes will be items of art or craft equipment.
Water colour, pencil drawings and colour pencil drawings must be no bigger than A3. Photographs can be up to A4 in size. Craft items must be either an Essex Craft or a model that is relevant to Essex. ADULT ENTRIES ARE £2 AN ENTRY.

ow that the dust has settled on the recent General Election, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my constituents who live in and around the Hockley area for their support in re-electing me to Parliament. During the six weeks of the election campaign I canvassed in all parts of the constituency, including in Hockley, although given the thousands of properties in the village it was not possible to knock on every individual door. Nevertheless, I generally received a positive reception, for which I am very grateful. I was very pleased that the turnout increased to over 70% but I realise of course that not everyone reading this article will have voted for me and I will do my best to serve my constituents, whatever their own personal politics may be.
