Church Services, Events & Local Info Thoughts of January I always feel a sense of excitement at the start of a New Year A new beginning, a time to forget the mistakes of yesterday A time for new hopes, new challenges, a time to face ones fear Yet where would I start and what should I do, will my dreams be many or will they be few? Pick up my watercolours, start painting again, resume my piano lessons and play a refrain Perhaps a new hairdo, that should suffice, high lights all over,oh! that would be nice Shed a few pounds, walk three miles each day, or will other things always get in the way And so my thoughts went round and round, until the answer at last I found New Year was not only all about ME, so outside I went, other things to see It was one of those calm tranquil days, which often happens at the beginning of January When nothing stirs, the sky the colour of lead, Halcyon days I once heard said The fields lay silent and sombre, I could see green young shoots above the earth I smiled Mother Nature preparing for new Birth, Oak and Ash standing shyly in their naked state As though waiting with bated breath, for the bitter north winds to seal their fate And then would follow the first fall of snow, Oh where would all those small creatures go And so it was as I walked along, listening to the Robin sing a new song Tiny bulbs appearing through the soil, it must have been a long hard toil Snowdrops in clusters, heads bowed in prayer, crocuses brightly dressed in gardens everywhere The winter Cherry adorned in bridal white, on such a grey day what a beautiful sight Reluctantly I retraced my steps for now I could see, just what the New Year meant to me Words suddenly sprung to mind, the origin I had to find I knew they had come from the Creator above, so please accept them with my love BEHOLD I AM MAKING ALL THINGS NEW.

or over 500 years the Church has been standing as a centre of worship, witness and service. From records and references scattered over a long period of time an interesting story could be compiled. The little wooden belfry (as it is called in ancient records) could tell a story. A record dated 1757 says that there were three bells; in 1768 there were two bells and, in 1849 we read: “Ther remanythe at thys p’sent tyme in the churche of Hawkwell . . . on bell in the steepyll.” In an inventory of church goods taken in the reign of Edward VI it is recorded that Sir William Stafford forcibly carried off the bells of Rochford, Ashingdon, South Shoebury, Hawkwell and Foulness, and sold them for his own benefit. ! ! ! This article was researched by the Rev. Owen R. Brandon M.A. who was Rector here from 1951 to 1954. Hockley Living

n the 30 November I attended a Rochford District Council (RDC) meeting in Rayleigh that was mainly about the future of the public conveniences in Rochford District. There are 6 in total including the one in Hockley Woods that is not included at the moment. It was the usual stuffy council meeting where the public are not allowed to ask questions. There were about 15 council members and about 10 members of the public and parish/town councillors. An agenda/information document was handed out containing a lot of facts and figures. To cut a long story short, the main proposal seems to be to replace the current toilet blocks with the cubical type blocks they use in Southend and Leigh that have life expectancy of 20 years. As I see it the reason for this is that the existing facilities need to be completely refurbished costing probably as much if not more than replacing them. The other main point is they would for some reason like to offload the cleaning and maintenance responsibility to the parish/town councils. I would assume this is to cut the RDC budget cost, but in the end we all end up paying whatever way you look at it. My opinion is that as long as these facilities remain in a usable state it doesn’t matter what building they are in. I have used the cubicle type toilets in the past and as long as they are regularly cleaned and maintained they seem to work quite well. RDC are intending to consult the public before going ahead with any changes, but going by past experience of consultations/surveys the response can be as little as 0.4%. Alan James
Abellio Greater Anglia completes improvement work at Hockley rail station
R
ail passengers are benefiting from improvements to Hockley rail station as Abellio Greater Anglia completes work to refurbish the station buildings, canopy, platforms and footbridge. The work carried out includes: • canopy renewal and redecoration on both platforms • repairs to buildings and walls throughout the station • vegetation clearance • an upgrade of the electrical connection between the platforms • repairs to both platforms, including resurfacing, spot replacement of damaged copers (slabs at the platform edge); • installation of new drainage • renovation of the footbridge. Abellio Greater Anglia’s Area Customer Service Manager, Flavio Lopes, said, “This significant programme of work means that Hockley station is safer, smarter and a more pleasant station environment for our customers. Abellio Greater Anglia is committed to upgrading stations across the network to make customers’ journeys better and will be spending £60 million on further upgrades across the network as part of the new franchise.”
Chasing the Sun

hina determines its time and dates via a lunisolar calendar. A lunisolar calendar uses the astrological distances and positions between the Moon (Lunar) and the Sun (Solar) to determine its years, months and days. In the Chinese calendar, a new year begins at the mid-point of the winter solstice and the spring equinox. This event can happen on any day between the end of January and the middle of February and therefore means that new year’s day changes every year. For example, last year (2016) China celebrated its new year on February 8th, however China’s next new year’s day (2017) will be on January 28th. China’s new year’s day is celebrated as the most important and famous festival in its culture. A celebration that combines and ignites the enthusiasm of the turning of a new year with the warmth and love of Spring’s arrival. Therefore Chinese new year is literally called Spring Festival and it can be an entire month of holiday and festive surprises. Spring Festival brings with it a host of traditions, including big family reunions, meals and firework displays.
Even with China’s own unique calendar, modern Chinese culture still recognises the solar calendar and too acknowledges the day that the Earth completes an entire orbit around the Sun as January 1st. Collective Energy Switch
M
y annual energy contract was about to run out, although some last 2 years. This means unless you change, they automatically put you on a much higher standard tariff rate. You have 7 weeks to change over in, during which they cannot charge for ending the contract early. Changing your contract early can be as much as £40, £20 each for gas and electric. I had an offer to sign up for Essex County Council’s ‘’Collective Energy Switch’’ and after a couple of weeks I got an email with my estimated savings of £595 for the year. Not trusting anyone these days, I compared the tariff with the one I was about to change from and was surprised that unit cost and standing charge for both gas and electric were considerably higher. I have not done the calculations but I would assume they were making comparisons with my suppliers standard tariff rate and not the current tariff rate that I was on at the time. After using a couple of online comparison sites I finally changed with uSwitch. Although the electric rates are very slightly higher than my current ones, the gas prices are considerably better giving me a good saving overall with my heating costs. I have no way of knowing if my case is unique but be warned, do not change your supplier without a close look at the unit cost and standing charge tariffs for both services. Alan James
