Free taster session at Hockley Pre-school

ockley Pre-school is hosting a free taster session for families starting to think about pre-school provision for their little ones. There will be lots of activities for the children to try and the staff will be there to show the families around and answer any questions. You can drop in anytime from 1pm until 2.30pm, the Pre-school is located at the United Reformed Church, Bramerton Road, Hockley. If you have any enquiries please call 07415 728 665. Christmas Lights Street Event
H
ockley Parish Council has encountered some late safety challenges with the Christmas Lights Street Event this year which we do not have the resources to resolve between now and November. Rather than compromise public safety or scale down the event, the council has made the difficult decision to postpone the activities for this year. We are all very disappointed but would like to assure everyone that we are committed to revisiting plans for 2017 and rolling out other attractions which can be safely managed. The lights will go up in Hockley as usual and we will hold the Children’s Colouring Competition in the Parish Hall. We hope we can rely on your continued support and if you wish to be involved next year we would be pleased to hear from you. www.hockley-essex.gov.uk

s the great golden sun descends behind the mounts, a visual miracle conjures upon the water of Dong Hu’s face. Dong Hu, literally translates to ‘East Lake’; a massive lake within the city borders of Wuhan. Dong Hu is the biggest city lake in the whole of China with millions of visitors attracted by its vast scenery each year, with an area over 85km squared. Dong Hu is famous in Wuhan and its domestic province, Hubei. There are many typical touristy sites, including boat rides that secure passage from one end of the lake to the other and scenery gardens which boast the serenading beauty of summer’s bloom. Another feature of Dong Hu’s character is its access to ancient pagodas and shrines. These are situated upon the high reaches of the lake’s mounts and can present a great view of Wuhan on a clear day. As well as its geographical fascination; Dong Hu offers a historical myth shrouded with mystery. It has been said that upon the sun’s setting reflection, one can look into the lake and see what one desires most. The reflection has lured many travelers to risk claiming the illusions of their desires, only to jump into

n the 16th of August 2016 I attended along with about 40 other residents, a Hockley Parish Workshop hosted by Hockley Parish Council (HPC) but presented by Rochford District Council (RDC). About ten years ago a Hockley Village Plan was produced and about five years ago a Hockley Area Action Plan. A lot of good stuff was generated particularly in the village plan but as far as I can see, nothing has ever changed from the results of these documents. Now RDC want to produce another plan to cover Hockley from 2025. It would appear from the meeting that the main objective is to find areas of land for developers to build addition homes on, although RDC could not actually say how many would be required. We have gone through this exercise before and apart from Eldon Way Trading Estate, which will probably never change, only green belt land was found, resulting in the 70 homes now being built on the Folly Lane Estate. One of the main items highlighted now and in the past is the lack of infrastructure for existing homes particularly the B1013 road and the Spa roundabout. This is the responsibility of Essex County Council (ECC) and it seems doubtful to me that we will see any junction improvements now or after 2025. Apart from road improvement the majority of residents I talk to are happy with the way our village is now. I will be keeping a close watch on this subject and report any future developments I find. T
he topic of Essex County Council (ECC) switching off the street lighting between midnight and 5am on Sundays and 1am and 5am the rest of the week, is not going away. There are constant calls in areas like Basildon and Canvey, where crime figures are higher and in other areas for various safety issues, to keep them on all night. Most councils like Southend are changing to cheap to run LED lights, whereas ECC spent a lot of money installing timer control panels that will probably never pay for themselves. I now believe this issue will eventually disappear, as solar street lighting will eliminate it. I first noticed a number of them this year in the USA and if you google “Solar Street Lighting” you will find there are plenty of manufacturers making them and a good website example is greenshine-solar.com . The advantages are great as there are no wiring costs, no digging up the road to lay cables and no electricity costs to run them, just the possible replacement of the long life lamps and rechargeable batteries. The modern solar cells are powerful enough to keep the low power LED lamps on all night, even in the winter. Changing to solar would not only save ECC a few hours of electric during the night but the rest of the night-time hours as well. I have no idea what ECC are doing about this issue at the moment but they should now at least be running solar street lighting trials. Alan James 01702 207297
