Tiddlywinks is 25 years old!

Tiddlywinks Reunion - Saturday 19th July 25 years ago someone had a vision…..

“Living in Victor Gardens in 1989 and attending Emmanuel Church, with a one year old son, I felt inspired to start a Mums and Toddler group for the Hawkwell Mums…. I knew that God was pouring out His blessings.” Roz. And so started the beginning of a Mums and Toddler group at Emmanuel Church (opposite The White Hart pub). Over the years it out grew the Hall and moved into the Church and expanded from an afternoon session, to a morning and afternoon session. It changed from just a simple meeting place for Mums, their babies and toddlers, to a structured session with a theme each week, craft activities linked to the theme and a Bible or moral story linked to the Christian faith and of course tea and biscuits! And so became “Tiddlywinks”.

Hundreds of children, babies and their carers have been touched by the loving warm atmosphere and welcome that awaits them and the dedication of the helpers who each week give freely of their time. There are people who work alongside the children doing the craft work and there are those who are always willing to be a listening ear and a strength and support for Mums and carers who need to offload and recharge their batteries ready for the week ahead.

We thank God for the work of Tiddlywinks and the way He has provided helpers to keep this work going for 25 years.

WI Coffee Morning

ockley Village WI are holding a Coffee Morning at the Old Fire Station, Hockley on 1st November 2014 from 10 am - 12 30 pm.

Entrance is £1.50 which includes a drink and home-made cake.

All the proceeds will be split between the British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and the Bedwell Cancer Ward.

y the time you all read this we will have had our summer break, and looking forward to our autumn events. We have allocated some of our Quiz Night tables for Friday 10th October already, but if you would like to make up a table of six people, there is a supper of fish/sausage/chicken and chips, or veg option with tea/coffee, at a cost per head of £9.50. We host it at Hockley Public Hall, Bullwood Road with a prompt 7.30pm start. This is a fund raising event to support “Together on Sunday Afternoon”, a group supporting people who would otherwise be on their own on a Sunday.

We have a variety of speakers booked in September, so look forward to seeing everyone again soon.

eptember is the month of change when the end of Summer meets the beginning of Autumn. The Summer constellations are still well-placed especially soon after dark all the time slowly moving westwards. Late evening the great constellation of Taurus begins to take over the eastern horizon bringing with it one of the jewels of the sky – The Pleiades. When rising the Pleiades appear as a sizeable misty glowing patch with around seven extremely faint stars embedded within becoming slowly easier to count as they gain altitude. This misty cloud is also known as the Seven Sisters and appears somewhat similar in shape to a mini Plough/ Great Bear. Binoculars are superb when used, revealing a mass of tiny starlike points.

For early risers Venus and Jupiter are visible in the east before sunrise both appearing as starlike points with Venus being the brighter.

During the long winter months, our resident horses and ponies chomp their way through thousands of bales of hay and sacks of feed.

Due to the SSSI status of the site on which the Sanctuary is situated, our grazing is severely restricted from October through to the beginning of April, which rapidly depletes our hay and feed supplies. Although we buy our hay in straight off the field, which drastically reduces the cost, it is still a huge financial outlay for us to meet every year.

Our short feed is sourced directly through wholesalers to ensure we obtain the best possible price we can.

efore the arrival of the railway in 1899 the only way to get to Rochford was by walking, horse and cart or, if you could afford one, by horse! If you needed to see a Doctor this was the way to go.

If someone was very ill, no telephones then, a friend had to make the journey as quickly as possible to summon the Doctor.

Dr Lewis then got on his horse for his visit. Even if the railway had been there it wouldn’t have been much use to him because there could have been long gaps between patients if he had more than one to visit.

t was generally agreed in the police NAP meeting that since the railings were installed adjacent to the crossing at Sainsbury’s in Spa Road there has been a significant decrease in the amount of vehicles parking on the zigzags lines. It still occurs occasionally but not to the same degree as previously. It was also reported that Sainsbury’s bread lorries are still not using the parking bays for their deliveries.

he Hawkwell Residents Association relies on membership payments generated from the delivery of our Hawkwell Voice newsletters. We are struggling at the moment to get new volunteer folders, distributors and deliverers that make our newsletter possible and affordable. Local MP demonstrates his support for the Jones Family Practice

R

ayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, recently paid a visit to the Jones Family Practice in Hockley where he publicly expressed his support for the practice. During his visit, Mark met with members of the surgery’s Patient Participation Group (the PPG), as well as Dr Mahmud and the Practice Manager, Kerri-ann Lee, and Mark spent over an hour discussing issues with them.

Mark regarded the visit as a very positive one and he was reassured to hear the very strong support of the patient representatives for the practice, which has been headed up for several years by popular local GP, Dr Mahmud.

Commenting on his visit to the Jones Family Practice, Mark said: “I am pleased that I had an opportunity to visit the practice recently and see for myself the very good work that is going on there on behalf of the thousands of patients that are on the practice lists. The Army have a saying that ‘time spent in reconnaissance is rarely wasted’ – in other words if you hear about something, where you can, go and see it for yourself.

Having visited the practice, I am confident it is in good order and providing a very good service for its patients. It was good to see Dr Mahmud again to talk to his staff and patients and to demonstrate my support for the effective work that goes on there. I look forward to remaining in touch with this successful practice in the future.”

heelah has been a regular at Hockley & Hawkwell 55+ Social Centre for many years and is one of those who depend upon the mini-bus to ferry her to and fro. She enjoys Whist on a Monday and Scrabble on a Friday and also manages to attend some of the fund raising functions. Writing poetry is one of her hobbies and she has had her work published.
