Church Services & Events May by Christine of Hockley The Beautiful month of May has come, the start of lighter nights has begun.

Bright yellow and blue pansies fill our pots on the doorstep with a welcoming glow, when all they were in the winter were pots full of mud and snow.

It's the beginning of cleaning out your wardrobe, in search of summer gear, with the courage to recycle instead of holding it dear!

So May is here, it’s time to get some fresh air, walk the dog, feed the ducks and get out the bike, grab the kids and go on a hike.

Clean out the freezer ready for summer veg, design a sculpture on your hedge.

Or better still, just chill, it’s so pretty everywhere, smile at those who are unwell, unhappy, worried or sad and show them that you care.

ogether on Sunday Afternoon will be enjoying a musical afternoon on 4th May, and the group will be away from the Public Hall on 11th May for an outing.

We will be having an historical afternoon on 18th May to enjoy. We meet at Hockley Public Hall between 2.30 and 4.30pm most weeks.

HRA Coach Trips

T

he Hockley Residents Association social secretary organises coach trips including pick-up points in Hawkwell:

Thursday July 17th Ashdown Forest Explorer.

We visit Heaven Farm for morning coffee and enjoy a coach tour of Ashdown Forest. We pass through the ancient market town of East Grinstead, where we see the longest row of medieval houses in the country. We drive through the forest village of Hartfield, which is Winnie the Pooh country and then back to the Farm for a ploughman’s lunch. In the afternoon we visit Saint Hill Manor, a beautiful 18th century country house, where we finish the day with cream tea. The coffee and lunch are included in the price.

e have received a number of complaints in recent months about the reception service and appointment system at the Jones Family Practice. I have also experienced this frustration and wrote to the Practice Manager. She has now stated this is mainly due to a large increase in patients and a lack of funds to increase staffing levels. She also stated they will be improving the phone system and training for new staff. I wrote to Mark François who tells me this was also a problem in 2012. He was informed then that this would be sorted out and he will now be making further investigations. ummer is fast approaching and with it the ever decreasing hours of darkness. However, it is still well worth having a look at the night sky after dusk as there are now three major planets mixed in with the summer constellations. Jupiter is still holding on late evening well in the west/northwest appearing as the brightest starlike point in the area.

Well towards the south although not at a great altitude the bright starlike point of Mars is easily recognisable by its distinctive reddish hue. Unfortunately Mars is quite small so generally only reveals its disc through a telescope rather than binoculars. To the bottom left of Mars the giant planet Saturn slowly rises from the south/southeast and will be the brightest starlike point in the area. The beauty of Saturn has to be the ring system which circles its equator but unfortunately telescopic power is required to reveal it.

oodview Boarding Kennels is located in Greensward Lane, Hockley and is a family run business established in 1984. Woodview also boards dogs for RSPCA Essex South and Southend Branch whilst they await new homes. Sadly two of Woodview’s RSPCA boarders have been waiting 6 months now for a new home.

Max and Lola who are young American Bulldogs, were brought in Lola by an RSPCA Inspector in an emaciated condition. Woodview staff nursed them back to full body weight, but sadly they have not had any viewings or inquiries.

elchamps Scout Activity Centre is a camping and activity centre primarily for the Scouts and Guides, it also offers its facilities to any youth organisation and to schools and the local community.

As a charity, we keep our overheads as low as possible so that we can offer fantastic prices that enable our activities to be within reach of all.

To help keep our overheads low we can always use: Volunteers Catering team, helping with events or selling snacks in our refreshment kiosk or taking drinks round to the instructors on busy days.

Hawkwell Common

n medieval times the villages were scattered round a wide common on which the peasants grazed their live-stock and collected firewood.

By the end of the 18th Century most of the common was enclosed by local landlords, leaving only a small common. This is what happened to Hawkwell Common. When I visited the Coe family to record their history Mr Coe told me he had kept goats on the common and he had official permission which passed to him from his mother.

Mr Nightingale, above, was able to ‘break in’ or tame/train young horses on the common. My mother remembered seeing him with a young horse on a long rope walking it round and round and shortening the rope until it was trained.

HDS Says goodbye to Margaret and “Jan P”

ockley Dental Surgery is saying goodbye to two of our long-standing staff members who are looking forward to their retirement.

Margaret has worked at HDS for over 40 years and had become one of life's constants in an ever changing world. Margaret has contributed enormously to the care of patients at HDS through her roles as a dental nurse and a receptionist. Many of our patients think of Margaret as a friend and are always glad to have her help in arranging their visits and care. Throughout most of her time at HDS Margaret has also worked as a volunteer for PHAB giving generously of her time in organising social events, trips and holidays for disabled members of the community.

"Jan P" has worked at HDS as a receptionist for 12 years and will be sorely missed. She is a cheery and welcoming person who many patients have got to know well and look forward to seeing on their visits. She has contributed greatly to the smooth running of the administration at HDS. Jan has recently become a grandmother and is looking forward to being able to dedicate much of her time to the growing family.

All of the staff at HDS wish both Margaret and Jan P much happiness in their retirement.

We know our patients would want to join us in this. We will miss you. evening meetings? We are trying to set up an alternative hobbies group for those individuals who are not catered for by the usual clubs that run in Hockley. Meetings are to be held at the Old Fire Station, Hockley.
