s I write, the weather has turned very cold with a thick frost this morning and we have more dark evenings ahead of us.

When we meet each Sunday in the Public Hall, it is lovely and warm and cosy, and we can hopefully forget how cold it is outside as we share a welcome cup of tea together.

I

would like to thank all our residents that responded to the Rochford District Council’s (RDC) recent consultation document on the Hockley Area Action Plan (HAAP) proposal, that we believe is unacceptable in its current form. I would especially like to give a big thank you to our volunteer deliverers that put our leaflets through most doors in Hockley, braving the cold during the Christmas and New Year period. The responses had to be in by the 17 January 2014 and I will let you know when we get the inspectors report. We may not have changed the outcome but we have at least registered our objection to this unpopular plan.

t looks as though we are in for another police reorganisation, as we are informed further drastic cuts are on the way. I have not so far received the crime figures but I believe there has been an increase in burglary over the past few weeks, although most crime in our area remains low.

avid Wilson Homes (DWH) reopened the access through Thorpe Road for Christmas but unfortunately they closed it again on the 6 January. We have been in touch with Essex County Council (ECC) Highways who inform us that DWH will not be able to reopen this access until the end of February due to drainage works. DWH has so far had a poor record with this development, now they are asking for permission to sell 22 homes before they carry out the required improvements to the Rectory Road / Main Road roundabout. This could mean 100 to 200 additional vehicles passing through this junction per day. We believe DWH should stick to the approved plan for the roundabout, Alan James which is already behind schedule.

T

he largest planet in our Solar System, Jupiter, has been dominating our night sky for some time and is superbly placed to the top left of Orion in the constellation of Gemini. Appearing low in the east as darkness falls Jupiter is high in the south by mid-evening. Finding Jupiter is easy, it is the brightest starlike point in the sky. Jupiter may be millions of miles away but it is incredibly large so even a pair of steady binoculars may be able to reveal a minute disc rather than a dot. Small telescopes are quite capable of revealing the Jovian disc with several dark bands crossing the tiny globe.

Four of the Jovian moons, although appearing as starlike points, can be seen roughly in line with Jupiter’s equator.

Due to the orbit of the moons around Jupiter they may not all be visible at the same time.

astledon Greyhound Rescue finds loving homes for greyhounds who are sadly no longer wanted once their racing days are over. We are a Registered Charity and are run entirely by volunteers, all of whom are passionate about the greyhounds in our care.

These gentle dogs make excellent pets and our rescue ensures that they receive a warm bed, veterinary care, good food and above all, lots of love whilst we find them a forever home.

People often think that greyhounds need lots of exercise but this is far from true – they are happy with two 20 minute walks a day and will spend the rest of their time sleeping! Greyhounds adore human company, are extremely gentle and docile dogs and make excellent companions.

As we are a small independent rescue, we can take the time to get to know the personalities, likes and dislikes of the dogs in our care. We have found that by doing so, we can match the right dog to the right home, first time – something that is very important to us.

All of our dogs are very special to us and their long term welfare and happiness is of prime importance. We love to receive updates as to how our dogs are getting on in their new homes and we are always on hand to give any help or advice that is needed.

Footpath to Chubb’s Nook

400 Scouts about to brave the winter weather at Belchamps Scout Activity Centre.

W

e are hopeful of some drier weather before our annual Winter camp event in February when some 400 scouts will be braving the conditions and camping for the weekend.

We are coping well, The grounds are at saturation and we are seeing significant increase in the flow of the stream.

Where the stream enters the site from Hockley Woods we have seen the fence damaged by the pressure of the flow of the stream which brings branches and logs through from Hockley Woods. The stream has overflowed on several occasions completely flooding the campfire circle. The wind has caused less problems with just a few small branches that have been quickly dealt with and two small trees that have come down in unused areas overnight. This is all being monitored and worked on daily by our team to make sure we are ready to welcome the Scouts.

The Scouts will be kept busy though over the winter camp so even the wettest or coldest weather won’t dampen spirits, with activities such as high ropes, climbing, archery, bungee trampolines, a mini digger, a gyroscope and of course a good sing song around the campfire, they will be too busy to worry about the cold. Camping in tents, the 11 to 14 year olds will experience some great life skills, learning to work as a team and to cope with the conditions whilst having lots of fun, exercise and fresh air.

ears ago there used to be a sign post in Hockley, near where the Library is now, pointing to ‘Chubbs’s Nook.’

I often wondered what Chubb’s Nook was, until 2000 when I went to meet the Bridge family, who lived/live at the top of Mount Bover’s Lane and heard of it’s history.

Once, before this date, I was walking out on a ramble and crossed a field footpath and found in the middle a little group of trees with a small derelict house. Since then the house and trees have disappeared and the field has turned into a huge ‘prairie.’ Originally the area was four hedged in fields between Mount Bover’s Lane and Gusted Hall Lane and the footpath is now at the top.

I was told that there were two little cottages called ‘Chubbs Nook’ and near was the above little cottage called ‘Tapes.’

After over 8 months of extensive works, we have moved into our new home at 7 Spa Road, Hockley, having outgrown our previous premises at 7 Main Road. Although we still have a few external cosmetic finishes to make, the building works have been completed.

The building, formerly a car parts repair shop which had fallen into a bad state of repair, had become a real eyesore at the top of the high street.

TMF architects of Eastwood were commissioned to help us sympathetically convert the building into a funeral home on the ground floor with two self-contained flats above. Due to the buildings dilapidated state and many years of neglect, this was to prove quite a challenge. Upon completion of the purchase, the building was completely stripped out with all floors, ceilings, plumbing and electrics being removed. This left us with the shell of the building and it was evident that the project would take many months to complete.

Due to the building’s prominent position we wanted to ensure that, once completed the building would greatly improve the overall outlook into the high street. It was for this reason that we decided to completely replace the roof, converting the rear flat roof into a pitched roof in the process. The building itself was to be refurbished to our exacting standards with the needs of our clients in the forefront of our decision making. We are now able to provide greatly enhanced facilities for the bereaved which includes a spacious reception area, private chapel of rest with family area as well as a separate arrangement room. We are also now able to offer client parking to the rear of the premises.

The buildings layout is designed to cater for the community we serve and includes facilities for the disabled. An acoustic floor as been laid throughout to prevent noise contamination from the flats above and provide a peaceful and restful environment. The interior itself is decorated in calm neutral colours and the furniture, supplied by local company Talis Projects, has been chosen to provide comfort to those visiting us to make arrangements or spend time visiting their loved one at our chapel of rest. We would like to thank all of the local companies who have helped us make this project possible and the residents and businesses of Hockley who have supported us during the building works. We now feel that we are able to provide the very best facilities for those we are privileged to serve for many years to come.
