Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. - Rho Eta Zeta Chapter - 25th Anniversary Souvenir Booklet

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on January 16, 1920, at Howard University, Washington, D.C. The Klan was active during this period, and the Harlem Renaissance was acknowledged as the first important movement of Black artists and writers in the U.S. This same year the Volstead Act became effective, heralding the start of Prohibition and Tennessee delivered the crucial 36th ratification for the final adoption of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. The worst and longest economic recession to hit the U.S. would define the end of the decade-The Great Depression.

Within this environment, five coeds envisioned a sorority that would directly affect positive change, chart a course of action for the 1920s and beyond, raise people’s consciousness, encourage the highest standards of scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members. These women believed that sorority elitism and socializing overshadowed the real mission of progressive organizations and failed to address fully the societal mores, ills, prejudices, and poverty affecting humanity in general and the black community in particular.

Since its inception, Zeta has continued its steady climb into the national spotlight with programs designed to demonstrate concern for the human condition both nationally and internationally. The organization has been innovative because it has chronicled several firsts. It was the first National Pan-Hellenic Council organization to centralize its operations in a national headquarters, first to charter a chapter in Africa, first to form auxiliary groups, and first to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. The sorority takes pride in its continued participation in transforming communities through volunteer services from members and its auxiliaries. Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters worldwide and has a membership of 100,000+.

Zeta’s national and local programs include the endowment of its National Educational Foundation community outreach services and the support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliaries have given untotaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote social and civic change legislation.

Over 100 years later, it retains its original zest for excellence. It espouses the highest academic ideals, resulting in its members serving in groundbreaking roles in all fields of endeavor. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is poised for perpetual service to mankind into her second century and beyond.

Sorors Donna Y. Alston*, Lesa R. Jeanpierre, Lauren Fowlkes, Paulette McCoy, Monica Parrish, Roxanne Parson, and Cheryl Raigns are the trailblazing, dynamic, and pioneering women who came together with a passion and heart to expand the reach of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated based on the ideals and principles of our Five Pearls. As a result, the Rho Eta Zeta Chapter was chartered in Anne Arundel County on April 10, 1999.

For a quarter of a century, the chapter has built and maintained partnerships with many local organizations such as the Annapolis Light House, The Blue Ribbon Project, Sarah’s House, Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services, and Brooklyn Park Middle School, just to name a few. Additionally, we have provided over $15,000 in scholarships to Anne Arundel County High School Seniors.

Rho Eta Zeta has also impacted our community through our Stork’s Nest program. Under the Stork’s Nest program, we provide educational programming to expectant mothers and the public on how to have a healthy pregnancy, better birth practices, and how to raise healthy and strong children. We also provide free items for them to start or complete their nursery.

Our innovative programming has also expanded into the social action arena through our engagement with local and state officials through the championing of various legislation in the areas of the legalization of cannabis, Women’s Health, Domestic Violence, and engaging the community to register to vote through various voter registration drives.

Because of this sisterhood, many of us have established bonds that will extend far beyond Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Rho Eta Zeta Chapter

Since 1940, chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, realized the importance and the valuable contributions of women who chose a different educational path than college. Though many women affiliated with Zeta chapters served in organized auxiliaries, their place in the sisterhood was made official when National President Lullelia Harrison included in her report to the 1948 Boule’ a recommendation that chapters be allowed to organize auxiliaries known as Zeta “Amicae” (Friends of Zeta).

The Amicae of Glen Burnie have a rich history that dates back to their original charter on December 14, 2013. The charter members included Terrie Barnswell, Laverne Lowery, Geraldine Shearod, A'lexus Garner, Minerva Woodard, Jacqueline Moye, and Brenda Hilliard. The Auxiliary was inactive from 2018 to 2020, but the regained its footing when it was reactivated on November 8, 2020. The Auxiliary was reactivated by Robin Brabham, Jazmin Bradley, Quateka Burrell, Tia Hooks, and Vernay Shuler, who are now ac l k h ' h xiliary works alongside Ze

Established on February 22, 2014, the Rho Eta Zeta Youth Auxiliary is dedicated to fostering the growth of young girls and women by offering a thoughtfully curated range of activities that aim to enrich their minds, bodies, and spirits as they engage in community service initiatives.

Over the past decade, our Youth Auxiliary has expanded to include more than 50 members ages 4-18 in our Pearlette, Amicette, and Archonette Youth Clubs. Our Youth members have garnered numerous accolades at local, state, and regional levels within the Sorority, such as Youth Auxiliary of the Year award, among others. Our club members have moved on to achieve great things and some have also become members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

We take immense pride in your accomplishments and express our gratitude for your valuable contributions, which are integral to the fabric of our chapter.

Soror Donna Y. Curry Alston joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. through Alpha Zeta Chapter. While in Alpha Zeta, she served on the Membership and Youth Auxiliary committees. She was a member of New Shiloh Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland where she served on the Dance ministry.

Donna was employed by the State of Maryland Department of Juvenile Services as a Juvenile Counselor. She had a passion for working with youth and helping them to recognize their potential and reach their goals. Donna was a charter member of Rho Eta Zeta Chapter and before her death, she was working on helping the chapter to form a youth auxiliary. After a brief illness, Donna departed Earth to be with her heavenly father in 2000.

Because of her love and passion for youth, Rho Eta Zeta named a scholarship in her honor. And with this scholarship, we help ease the burden of paying for college del County Female High School Seniors.

Established in 2020, The White Rose Scholarship of Excellence recognizes Anne Arundel County female High School seniors who have an exceptionally high GPA (grade point average), an outstanding record of community service, showcase leadership skills in their classes and within the community, and also embody the tenets of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated - Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood.

Delegate Michael (Mike) Rodgers has led a life of service for over three decades. After retiring as a Colonel in 2015, he then began his journey into public service. As a Maryland State Delegate, he tirelessly work to advance policies that promote fairness, equality, and justice for all. We are excited to present him with the Excellence in Public Service Award. Thank you for your leadership and dedication to serving the people of Maryland.

Cory George, MS, MA, is a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist (CCTS) with a progressive career that began with advocacy for childhood sexual abuse survivors, becoming a life coach, and trauma recovery. Through his private practice and work in the local school systems, he provides treatment to children experiencing developmental delays and behavioral difficulties. In recognition of his outstanding dedication and commitment to serving our community in the mental health field, we are elated to honor Cory with the Excellence in Community Service award. His selflessness and expertise have made a significant impact on the lives of many individuals struggling with mental health challenges. Thank you for your dedication and leadership in making a positive impact on our community.

We are proud to present the Youth Empowerment Award to our Triumphant Soror Gayle Lewis in recognition of her outstanding contributions to empowering young people and helping them realize their full potential. Soror Lewis was a dedicated member of our chapter who worked tirelessly to support the Zeta Youth Auxiliaries, and her lifelong commitment to serving the community has left an indelible mark on our organization. We look forward to continuing Soror Lewis's legacy of empowering young people in the years to come.

It is with great pleasure that we present Quateka Burrell with the Excellence in Amicae Leadership Award for her exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to the ideals and mission of our organization. Quateka’s passion for community service and willingness to lend a helping hand was apparent from the very beginning, and we are grateful for the positive impact she has made on our organization and community.

The mission of the Zeta Amicae is to support the goals and objectives of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and to promote the welfare of the community. Quateka’s leadership and dedication have been instrumental in helping us achieve our goals, and we are honored to have her as a member of our Amica Auxiliary.

We are proud to work alongside you in service to our community, and we look forward to continuing our work together in the years to come.

We are proud to present Conner Stevenson with the Youth Legacy of Service Award. Connor embodies the qualities of academic excellence, community service, and leadership within and outside of her academic community.

Despite these challenges, she has continued to maintain above a 3.5 GPA during her high school career, received numerous accolades such as the ScholarAthlete, and Minds in Motion Awards, and participates in various STEAM and robotics workshops all while balancing a passion for service.

With a servant’s heart, Conner has dedicated her time to her community through fundraising for various causes, dedicated her birthday advocating for the homeless in 2019, and assisting in caring for her elderly grandparents. Within the Zeta Youth Auxiliary, she serves on the Archonette Executive Board as Historian and encourages her Zeta Youth Auxiliary sisters to strive for greater.

For her exceptional leadership skills, strong work ethic, and a deep commitment to service. She has been an integral part of our youth auxiliary groups from its inception, consistently going above and beyond to serve her community and make a positive impact.

Thank you for being an awesome sister to your Zeta Youth Auxiliary sisters and your dedication to serving our community.
