transferred to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital. From there he was transferred to Tshilidzini Hospital, from where he was then airlifted to the provincial hospital in Polokwane because of the seriousness of his condition.

Neluvhola died on arrival at the Polokwane Hospital.Mahuwa added that a case of murder was opened following the incident.

The family said they were still in shock following the incident.

“We still cannot believe that Neluvhola is gone. This is a very bad situation for the family. We are all saddened by his death. He did not deserve to die like this,” said the deceased’s brother, George.

He added that the family would love to see the accused rotting in jail where he belongs. “We want to see justice done,” said George.

Thulare was arrested a day after the incident. He briefly appeared before the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court and the case was postponed to October 11, pending further investigations. He remains in custody.

From what could be established, Thulare was released from prison shortly before the incident.

The police did not disclose the reason for him being in prison.

Whoever sees anyone in the community behaving strangely must alert the police immediately,” said Kutama.The deceased’s daughter, Tshililo (27), is apparently now pregnant with the accused’s child. Neluvhola will be laid to rest at a local cemetery in the village tomorrow (Saturday).

Members of the Kutama community are still shocked, following the gruesome murder of a 64-year-old pensioner. The incident happened at Madodonga village last Thursday when a 24-year-old man allegedly stabbed his ex-lover’s father, Mr Wilson Neluvhola, to death.

Neluvhola was stabbed in the stomach twice and left to die.

According to a spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Godwin Mahuwa, the incident happened at about 18:40.

“The accused allegedly stole a knife at a local supermarket. He then visited the Neluvhola family where he demanded to see his former girlfriend. The deceased, who was watering his vegetable garden at the time, then told Thulare that his daughter was not at home. Thulare then insisted that he wanted to see her, thinking that the old man was just refusing him permission,” Const Mahuwa said. Mahuwa added that Thulare then started arguing with Neluvhola. The argument resulted in a fight, during which the accused allegedly stabbed Neluvhola in the stomach. According to Mahuwa, Neluvhola was rushed to the nearby Kutama Health Centre, from where he was later

“Mountain Killer” still on the loose After a public outcry that police are not doing enough to catch a fugitive who killed a local woman, the Thohoyandou police have finally released an identikit of a man they believe could help them in their investigation into the murder case.

The case relates to the murder a fortnight ago of a woman at Vondo outside Thohoyandou.

It is alleged the woman, Mmbangiseni Netshikulwe (31), was busy collecting wood with two other women at the nearby mountain when they were surprised by a man who tried to rob and rape them. It is alleged the man hid next to the firewood which they had already collected and waited for them to come back.

On their return to the spot, the women were allegedly threatened with a big panga by the suspect, who ordered them to the bush, so that he could rape them.

A struggle apparently ensued and the man dropped the panga, whereupon he drew his firearm.

He is alleged to have shot one of the women in the forehead.

She was taken to hospital and died while receiving medical attention.

Community members have complained about the shoddy police treatment after the case was reported to them. They complained that police who attended the case did nothing to

Doctor’s formal bail application postponed The Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court, which is usually empty, was packed to capacity on Monday during the appearance of a well-known Vhembe medical doctor.

The doctor has been charged with the rape of a 21-year old patient, who had come to seek medical help at his surgery at Makhuvha outside Thohoyandou.Dr Justice Mulaudzi’s formal bail application was postponed to Thursday (yesterday).

Spectators, among them fellow church members and colleagues from the hospital where he works, waited since the morning until his name was called after teatime.

In an appearance that took less than 10 minutes, the prosecution and the accused’s defence agreed that the matter be postponed to Thursday for a formal bail application.

Mulaudzi (40), who is a senior official at Hayani Hospital, appeared before Magistrate Luckson Ramavhale. Prosecutor Mashudu did not waste time and asked for a seven-day postponement, saying there were still issues that police would like to investigate before they could start with the formal bail application.

For the accused, Adv Anton Ramaano said the issues should have been disclosed to them on September 29, but he was surprised to learn of the “issues” in court. After consultations with the magistrate, all the parties agreed for the bail application to be held on Thursday.

Mulaudzi first appeared on Thursday last week and his case was postponed to Monday for a bail application. His arrest and subsequent appearance is a sequel to an incident that happened at his consulting rooms,

where the woman is alleged to have been raped.

The victim, a woman from Thengwe in the Mutale area, is alleged to have complained of flue. Mulaudzi allegedly told her to undress, so that he could examine her. While busy examining her, Mulaudzi is said to have raped her, whereupon she jumped from the bed and noticed that she had been penetrated. She apparently shouted for help, whereupon nurses came to her aid and the police were summoned.

Responding to the allegations, Dr Phophi Ramathuba from South African Medical Association said a person should not be judged guilty until proven otherwise in a court of law. She said as people in the medical fraternity they felt ashamed of the report as the incident compromised the profession. She said they would wait for the law to take its course.

Mother of slain man welcomes sentence The mother of a 22-year-old man, who was viciously assaulted and died of his injuries, says even though she welcomes the life sentences her son’s murderers received, she is still struggling to come to terms with his death.

Tshildzi Tshilate of Tshisahulu outside Thohoyandou was brutally assaulted, and he died as a result of his injuries. His mother, Ms Sarah Tshilate, could not hide her tears after the Limpopo High Court sitting in Thohoyandou sentenced seven men to terms ranging from three years to life .

The seven men, Victor Makumbane (52), Enoch Maphwanya (58), deputy director of finance at Univen Peter Ralineba (46), Alfred Magadani (61), Willem Munyai (52), a former policeman, Sindiso Ronald Ngculu (49) and Takalani Nekhwevha (40) were sentenced to different terms on Thursday.

Six of the accused were found guilty of murder and were sentenced to life. Munyai, Ngculu and Nekhwevha were found guilty of kidnapping and were sentenced to three years without an option of a fine. All the accused were also found guilty of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and were sentenced to three years’ imprisonment with an option of a R6 000 fine.

Ms Tshilate, who was in court when sentence was passed, broke down on hearing the judgement. She said she welcomed the sentence, even though she still

had a sore heart which she did not think would heal. She said she had given up hope after such a long time that the matter would finally come to an end.

“I have been waiting for too long and was on the verge of a breakdown. I am sick and is difficult for me to cope. I am still burning with pain, thinking of the pain my son went through before he died. They killed an innocent young man, who struggled to make a decent living and never stole from anybody. The pain will remain with me forever,” she said.

The mother of six said life would never be the same without her son. She said he was working at the local school and, through his meagre salary, was able to assist his family. “We are very poor family that depends on grants, and the small contribution he made to the family made a lot of difference. Now that he is gone, we are finding it very hard to cope,” she said.

The investigating officer, D/ Capt Shumani Raphulu, sighed with relief. “I have been a detective for more than 20 years, but this was one of the most difficult cases I have worked on. I am just happy that justice has finally prevailed and those guilty are now

paying for their sins,” he said.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Avhafarei Tshiovhe welcomed the sentence, saying it would serve as a deterrent to others not to commit crime.

The case relates to the death of Tshilidzi Tshilate, who was assaulted until he died in 2008 and the assault of Fananani Tshifaro. The court found that the two were badly assaulted until Tshilate died and Tshifaro was seriously injured after they were suspected of having stolen electricity cables.

The incident happened at the grinding mill owned by Maphwanya at Tshisahulu in 2008.

In convicting and sentencing them, the court found that the six refused to testify under oath to rebut the evidence of the main state witness, Tshifaro. After their failure to testify under oath, the court relied on the evidence of the state witness, which was not challenged. Maphwanya won the court’s favour as he was able to take the stand and exonerate himself from the charge of murder.

However, he was found guilty of a charge of assault and sentenced to a fine of R6 000 or three years’ imprisonment. He paid the fine and is now a free man.

The South African National Civic Organization (Sanco) at Mauluma Village in the Nzhelele area is again at loggerheads with the traditional authority over the burial of one of its members.

This comes after Sanco was denied permission by the Ravele traditional authority to bury one of its members, Mr David Mmbudzeni Muvhango, at a local cemetery. Muvhango (47) died after a short illness last week.

The fighting between the traditional authority and Sanco started in 2008, when the organisation insisted that the residents should stop paying the funeral contribution of R5 directly to the Ravele traditional authority.

"This was after we realised that the chief was using the money meant for funerals in the village, for his own gains. We then decided that we must no longer pay the money to him, but rather keep the money ourselves as the organisation. This was simply to ensure that poor people are buried with dignity and respect," said the chairperson of Sanco in the village, Mr Mbulaheni Mukhathedzwa.

He added that since then, if a Sanco member passes away in the village, they experience problems before a person can be buried. "The Ravele dynasty refused us (permission) to bury our loved ones at a local graveyard. They demanded R500 from the deceased's family for them to open a gate for us, which we refused to pay as Sanco," he said.

Sanco had to apply for a court interdict through the Thohoyandou High Court to stop the Ravele dynasty from preventing them to bury one of its members, Muvhango. The Ravele dynasty, however, allegedly defied the court order last Wednesday and locked the gate leading to the graveyard, preventing Sanco and family members of the deceased to get inside the graveyard.

During our reporter's visit to the village last Thursday, a sheriff of the high court, Mr Raliphaswa, instructed that a gate of the graveyard should be opened. Community members were then granted entrance to the graveyard and a grave was dug. However, the Ravele dynasty then obtained a court interdict from the Dzanani Magistrate's Court, which Sanco defied.

Muvhango was laid to rest in the village last Saturday. "We defied the interdict from the magistrate, because the Ravele dynasty also defied our court interdict from the High Court," said Mukhathedzwa.

A representative from the Ravele dynasty, Mr Tutu Ravele, refused to comment.

A similar incident happened in the village last year when another Sanco member, Mr Mbulaheni Sithagathaga (56), was buried at the back of his house, after his family was refused entrance to the graveyard.

A Thohoyandou family is still deeply traumatised after their six-year-old son was forcefully taken away by kidnappers, who demanded ransom for his release.

Husnen Chaniya of Thohoyandou Block F was on his way from the mosque after 17:00 when he was allegedly abducted by unknown men. The family became worried when he did not arrive back home from the mosque.

They started looking for him with neighbours and relatives but to no avail: Husnen was nowhere to be found. Some of those who came to help were just about to go to the police when a suspicious-looking bakkie pulled up next to them and a letter was dropped there with strict instructions.

They were allegedly told that the boy was safe, but his safe return would only depend on their cooperation.

One of the conditions was that they should not involve the police. A number was supplied that they could phone, but only at 06:30 the following day.

in the direction of Tshakhuma.

Some members of the community tried to follow the bakkie but lost sight of it as it was even skipping red traffic lights.

They had, however, taken down the registration number of the bakkie.

They then reported the matter to the police, who sprang into action. The police were soon tracing the getaway bakkie.

A large group of community members from the Indian community was also keeping vigil at the home and the police station.

Their hopes were heightened when the bakkie was traced to Shayandima.

Two young men were taken in for questioning, but the boy was still not found. Police spent the whole night combing the surrounding areas for clues, but it was not until the following morning that the boy was found dumped at a home in Itsani in the Tshisahulu area. The family where he was left could not even shed light on how he had ended up there as they did not witness his being dumped there.

No sooner had the news of his being found become known

than wild celebrations started at the Thohoyandou police station, where many had been waiting to see the boy alive.

The father of the boy, Mubarak Husnen, could not contain his excitement and he quickly broke the good news to his wife, who was sedated at home.

“I am very excited. The whole thing was like a dream to me. I remained hopeful that my son would be found alive and unharmed," said an elated Mubarak. He said the night of fruitless searching was like a long year for him and added that he could not understand how anybody could harm an innocent boy for the sake of money. He said the family was still traumatised and his wife would need counselling.

He thanked the police for the sterling work they had done in making sure that the child returned to them safely.

A kidnap case has been opened, and no one has been arrested so far. At the time of going to press, it was not clear what had happened to the two men taken in for questioning.

Dodgy drivers’ licenses under scrutiny The provincial traffic department says it is working hard to intensify the fight against the illegal issuing of driver's licenses. The MEC for Roads and Transport, Ms Pinky Kekana, said in a statement last Thursday that her department was working with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) to investigate these types of crimes.

According to Kekana, the investigations, which commenced in 2007, revealed that driver's licenses had been issued while numerous discrepancies occurred. These included calculation errors, no eye tests were conducted, road test times were less than required, yard test times were less than required, application forms were not fully completed and the K53 procedure was not adhered to (test reports signed by examiners who did not conduct the tests).

"As a result, 1 183 driving licenses were cancelled and 61 examiners were suspended from the eNATiS system," said Kekana. The affected driving license testing stations are: Sekgosese, Marble Hall, Lephalale, Mokopane, Tzaneen, Blouberg, Phalaborwa, Makhado, Polokwane and Bochum.

Kekana added that her department is currently utilising the anti-fraud and corruption unit and the SAPS to investigate corrupt practices at driving license testing stations.

"Currently, we are investigating two such cases. The department has also deployed computerized learner license testing systems to 15 driving license testing centres, as a way to prevent corruption," she said.

Kekana has ordered that these computerised learner license testing systems be rolled out to the

remaining 17 testing centres in the 2012/13 financial year.

She added: "The department has assisted driving school operators to develop their own structures, in order to better manage their operations.

The National Road Traffic Act does not cater for operations of driving schools, which makes it difficult for the department to manage illegal operations on the part of driving schools.

However, nationally, there is a draft bill which will compel driving schools to register with the department."

According to Kekana,” the high number of cancellations of driving licenses and suspension of examiners provides tangible proof that Limpopo is taking the lead in efforts to clear the fraud rot which exists in testing centres throughout the country”.

Six in court after “assaulting thieves”

Four of the six co-accused in the court case against well-known businessman Marthinus Jacobus Oosthuyse (47), from Louis Trichardt, have not been released yet.

Oosthuyse, better known as Inus, and his four workers, Rodger Chikadzi, Gift Machipisa, David Gilbert and Mapiye Sikhokho Muthelo, appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and assault last Monday. Oosthuyse’s 24-year old son, Tinus, was also arrested the following day.

Former Limpopo police commissioner Lt-Gen Amon Mashigo had to intervene the week before when Oosthuyse was locked up in the Makhado police cells. Mashigo’s intervention was required after local policemen apparently refused to release Oosthuyse, in spite of a High Court order.

Oosthuyse spent Thursday night ( September 22) behind bars after he had allegedly taken the law into his own hands and assaulted three Zimbabwean men by tying them behind his bakkie and dragging them over the ground. He suspected the men of stealing from his business.

According to information available, he and his workers also allegedly tied the Zimbabweans to a tree and assaulted them with iron pipes.

Oosthuyse’s attorney, Ms Steffie van der Westhuizen, said last week that she was only able to release her client late on Friday evening, after she had obtained a court order from the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. Despite this court order, Oosthuyse was only released when Mashigo gave the order for his

immediate release.

“The officials in the charge office laughed in my face and threw the court order on the ground,” said Van der Westhuizen. Another police officer allegedly went so far as to shout at Oosthuyse’s appointed advocate that he is a “f#%^king white racist”.

During last Monday’s court appearance, Oosthuyse was released on a R1 000 bail after the police did not oppose bail. A request from the police that he should report to the station twice a week and surrender his passport was rejected by the court because “he is not a flight risk.”

The following day, Tinus appeared on the same charges as his father and the other co-accused. He was also released on R1 000 bail. The remaining four’s bail application was first postponed until Friday and then until October 11. They will remain in custody until then.

Provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Ronel Otto confirmed last week that the police are investigating the alleged attack on the three Zimbabweans. She also confirmed that the police were still looking for the body of one of the three men who had allegedly died as a result of his injuries.

Regarding the alleged unprofessional conduct of the policemen towards Van der Westhuizen, she expressed the opinion that the investigation team was still busy with the identification of scenes and could therefore not release Oosthuyse immediately.

One of the complainants in the matter, who can not be identified until he has appeared in court, had to receive medical treatment. Police are still looking for the second complainant.

Jailed for raping 9-year-old A 29-year-old Zimbabwean man was sentenced to an effective 12year prison term for raping his nine-year-old sister.

The man had pleaded not guilty to a rape charge when he appeared before a local magistrate, Ms Mavis Kudumba.

She slapped him with a 13 years and six months prison term. Kudumba suspended 18 months of the sentence on condition of good behaviour and that he does not commit a similar crime in the next five years.

In passing sentence, Ms Kudumba said rape was a serious offence, hence the need to punish offenders severely.

The State, led by prosecutor Mr Nyasha Chengeta, said on August 4 this year the victim retired to bed with her mother at around 22:00. The two were sharing the same room.

Later that night, the man entered the room and sneaked into his sister’s blankets. He undressed her and raped her once after which he remained in the house.

After about 30 minutes, four goats entered the room, making some noise which wakened the mother. The victim then told her mother that her brother had raped her.

They made a police report, leading to the man’s arrest.

Bus victims buried in emotional service Premier Cassel Mathale and Thovhele-Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana led thousands of mourners around the province during the mass funeral of seven people who died in a bus accident at Tshithuthuni in the Nzhelele area a fortnight ago.

The mass funeral was held at Khakhu Secondary School on Saturday.

The bus, which was ferrying Khakhu pre-schoolers, overturned on a steep hill on September 20 and about 80 people were injured. The deceased who were buried are: Ms Sarah Denga (60), Phathutshedzo Phaswana (20), Mulalo Mudau (4), Orifha Singo (3), Sedzani Nthambeleni (4), Ronaldo Phaswana (4) and Thingahangwi Madada (4).

Family members and friends of the deceased could not contain themselves when the coffins arrived at the school and emergency workers had a busy day trying to assist those who fainted.

Social Development had to install temporary mobile clinics, where nurses and emergency officials were treating and helping those who collapsed during the emotional funeral.

Thovhele-Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and said they would be sorely missed. Mphephu said the community members around the Nzhelele and Vhembe area were deeply touched by the horror of the accident, especially as the victims were still so young.

“The family members of the victims need our support in hard times like these, and we hope accidents of this nature, which can be prevented, will never again take place on our roads,” he said.

Mr Phineus Nesane, a member of Khakhu pre-school’s SGB, said they came there to bury soldiers. “We sadly accept their deaths, but we console ourselves by the achievements they accomplished in their short lives. We

do not dwell on the years lived, but we invest in the quality of the life lived, no matter how short it was. We do not have proper words to explain how they will be missed. May their souls rest in peace,” he said.

Vhamusanda-Vho- David Khakhu told mourners that the families had accepted the loss although it was difficult to cope with it. “We understand and accept that our beloved children are gone, but it will be very difficult for us to live without them.

However, it is also important to acknowledge the community’s support since we were greeted with the bad news. God has done His will and there is nothing we can do because the situation is irreversible,” he said.

During the ceremony, Premier Mathale said the whole province and country were shocked after receiving the bad news of the accident and said it was a great loss to the Limpopo Province.

He emphasised that the next of kin of the deceased had to support each other.

Mathale expressed condolences to the families of the victims and said those who lost their lives would be missed.

Mr Mukondeleli Nevhutalu from Vhembe Bus Association said that the association had donated R50 000 towards the burial.

17-Year-old stabbed to death in tavern What started as an argument at a local tavern resulted in the death of a young man. This tragic incident happened at Mpheni Village outside Elim, after a 24-year-old man allegedly stabbed and killed a 17-year-old man last Saturday.

The accused, Simon Golele, was allegedly involved in an argument with Mr Kundwani Mamafha while they were busy drinking at the Sweet Waters Tavern at Mpheni village. The two men allegedly disagreed about something and a fight broke out. It is alleged that Golele stabbed Mamafha

with a sharp object in the neck. He died on the scene.

W/O Kedibone Mabatha, the spokesperson for the Waterval police, confirmed the incident. According to him, the incident happened at roughly 21:30. He added that a case of murder was opened with the police, while the investigation continued.

Golele was arrested the following day and appeared before the Waterval Regional Court, where his case was postponed for further investigations.

Mamafha is a resident of HaMakhakhe village at Mpheni.

Water crisis deepens in Thononda Village Although the residents of Thononda Village outside Nzhelele have marched to Polokwane, protesting against the shortage of water in the area, their problems were never solved. Now the residents have resorted to collecting water from the nearby rivers for domestic use. The community has been without water for four years now.

The water shortage in the village became problematic when a water pump that supplied water for the residents broke down four years ago. Several complaints were lodged at Thulamela Municipality, but to no avail.

Even though a tanker belonging to the Vhembe District Municipality supplies water in the village, the residents say that

it is not enough as the tanker only supplies water once every two weeks. "The water that is being supplied by the tanker is also not safe to drink. It is yellowish in colour, which shows that it is not clean, but people are drinking it because there is no water," said Ntungufhadzeni Matamela, the secretary of the water committee in the village.

She added that the municipality was taking longer than expected to fix the water pump. "We have a borehole in this village, but since the pump broke down, it was never attended to and we want to know why. We are tired of begging the municipality to fix the pump. All we need is water," she said. Matamela added that the Thulamela Municipality had been

ignoring their problem for years.

During our reporter's visit to the village last Thursday, there were about 85 water drums lined up for water collectionas it was a day for the tanker to supply water to the village. The residents were fighting for water. It was hard for the elderly people who just stood and watched while the young ones were fighting. "Some of us who cannot fight for the water are sometimes left without any," said a 60-year-old resident, Ms Masindi Tshikombedza. When contacted for comment, the spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said on Monday that his municipality was busy trying to address water problems in the district. "We are busy trying to fix problems in all villages that have boreholes. We have also purchased four more trucks that are supplying water in various parts of the district in the meantime," he said.

Ralushai added that the problem of water in Thononda would soon be addressed. He dismissed claims that the water that is being supplied by the water tankers is not clean.

Three suspected copper thieves arrested The police at Waterpoort have arrested three suspects who had been allegedly terrorising the Waterpoort farming community, stealing copper cables in the area for years.

The three, Shalton Ndou (18), Clever Siphuma (30) and Justice Moyo (28), were arrested at the Vlakte Plaats Farm last Wednesday, while in possession of copper cables.

They were arrested after farmers had joined the police in the search for the three accused in the area.

The value of the copper that was found in the accused’s possession is estimated to be more than R22 000.

The spokesperson for the Waterpoort police, WO Hezekiel Lishivha, confirmed the incident. “We have opened a case of theft of copper cables,” he said.

He acknowledged that several cases of theft of copper cable had been reported in the area in the past. “The

farming community had been crying about cable theft for a very long time and it is good that we managed to arrest some of the culprits. We are happy that farmers have joined the fight against crime in the area,” said Lishivha.

He said the arrest was the beginning of a good working relationship between the police and the farmers in the area. Lishivha expressed his appreciation for the effort shown by the farmers in the fight against crime. Muthuhadini celebrates Live performances filled the hall when the community of Mpheni in Elim celebrated the first three years of having a secondary phase within the Muthuhadini Combined School. This happened after the primary school was extended to include a secondary phase in 2008.

Muthuhadini Combined School was the first primary school in Mpheni-Elim. According to the chairperson of the school's governing body, Mr Matodzi Tshidada, it took years for the community to acquire a secondary school. Dumasi All Stars collected three points at the expense of Mbilwi United Stars when they crushed them 1-0 in their SAB League match at Dumasi on Sunday.

The game was characterized by rough tackles from both sides. The referee, Mr Dion Mphuma, did not allow any culprit to go unpunished.

Tough life for well-known Zim singer For some, fame comes with good things in life. For this talented artist, it has brought misery and misfortune.

Zimbabwean born Elliot Gwafa (28), known as Simungemunge in music circles, says misfortune and bad luck have followed him since the release of his debut album, Magumaguma (which is a type of gangster from Zimbabwe who rob and kill people).

Gwafa, who is from Harare but is now residing at Muledane Block M, says he has not enjoyed his fame. His music is believed to have infuriated gangsters, who are now targeting him, thinking he has lots of money.

“I am being targeted for my stand against crime. People also

think I made a lot of money from the sale of my album.

Thieves, Magumaguma and robbers are having a field day with my belongings,” he says.

He says he has recently been targeted twice and he was left with only with the clothing he was wearing. He says he reported the matter to the police, but nothing has been done so far.

He suffered yet another robbery when he was robbed in broad daylight on Saturday.

“I lost my phone and money and I immediately went to the police station and reported the matter.” He says he was very happy when police took him to the scene where the incident happened and found the thugs.

“I am deeply disappointed. I lost money and my phone and

the thugs were still there, but the police decided not to act.

Till today I have not gotten my things back,” adds a sad Gwafa.

He says instead of apprehending the thugs, police just called them to the side of the road and ordered them to apologize for what they have done. “I did not accept their apology as I wanted them to be arrested and my things to be brought back,” he says.

He had an argument with the police and he finally ended up not receiving any help.

The thugs were also released without having been arrested or his belongings being returned to him. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Captain Mashudu Malelo says the matter has not come to their attention as management. “We always encourage members of the community to approach senior officials at our station, even the station commissioner, if they do not feel satisfied about the service they get from our members.”

Malelo says they have no room for corrupt police and if that it is the case, they are going to deal with the officers who might have acted improperly.

Prisoners make a meaningful contribution They are in prison for having offended the community. They have done their time and are about to be released. They are now sorry for the pain they have caused the community.

To show that they are remorseful, offenders wanted to show it practically by contributing to their community.

Recently, they embarked on a clean-up campaign in conjunction with prison officials from Thohoyandou Management Area, Thulamela municipal workers and the local taxi association.The 30 offenders drew a lot of attention and were soon joined by members of the community in cleaning the Mvusuludzo Taxi Rank in Thohoyandou. They also cleaned the toilets at the taxi rank. The activities formed part of the Corrections Week cel-

ebrations. “We are very excited.

We have proved a point to the community that, irrespective of our being prisoners, we can still make a meaningful contribution to our communities when we are released.

“We were also made even happier by the reaction and reception we got from the community. It was very positive and it gives us hope that when we are released they will be ready to accept us back,” commented one of the prisoners, who wanted to remain anonymous.

He said prison has exposed them to many skills that they would be able to use to make an honest living. “We have changed and we are well equipped and ready to face the challenges outside. We can still make amends and make a meaningful contribu-

tion to our communities,” he said.

The acting area commissioner at Thohoyandou Management Area, Ms Annida Moeketsi, who was part of the group, seized the opportunity to address the masses that had gathered at the rank and were deligheted to see prisoners outside the walls of the prison.

She said that correction was a societal responsibility that needed everyone to participate.

She called on the masses in the taxi rank to start involving themselves and do their part in correctional matters. “As Correctional Services alone we do not even dream of making our core business of correcting offenders work, but together with you as a community, we can achieve our goals. Let us hold hands for the betterment of our society,” she said.

Rural communities urged to protect land Residents of the deep rural communities of Tshamulungwi and Tshitandani in Mutale were urged to look after the land, so that the area’s natural resources can be conserved.

Cllr Lucas Manyuha of the Vhembe District Municipality, who represented MEC Depuo Letsatsi-Duba, was speaking at the Tshitandani village sports grounds during the Limpopo Provincial Land Care Day Celebration on Thursday.

Manyuha said that the government’s Land Care programmes had shifted from the old tendency of focusing on small isolated projects, to an area that recognizes the catchments or a watershed or river basin.

“Limpopo province is en-

dowed with abundant agricultural resources and it is one of the country’s prime agricultural regions noted for its production of livestock, fruits, vegetables, cereal and tea. We would like to see every land user take part and become involved in using these responsibly and protecting our natural resources,” said Manyuha.

The theme of this year’s provincial Land Care Day was “Towards Community Adoption of Management of Natural Resources” Manyuha added that the government was in favour of the protection of agricultural land from non-agricultural uses in the interest of improved food production. He said the Department

of Agriculture in the province was currently implementing 15 projects in the 15 municipalities, focusing in soil conservation, wetland management and veld management.

The Manager of Land Care Programmes in the province, Mr Mpfariseni Netshikovhela, said the department also had junior land care programmes in which they engaged young leaners and young people in the communities to play an active role in ensuring the safe future of their environment. “We used to send pupils from various schools to learn more about our land care programmes at the Madzivhandila Agricultural College in Thohoyandou, so that they could learn how to preserve land at an early age.

We are worried much about people destroying wetlands by building in the wetlands, engaging in careless veld fires, deforestation by chopping trees and clearing of virgin forest,” said Netshikovhela.

The MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr George Phadagi, officially announced the appointment of Major-General B M Ntlemeza as acting provincial police commissioner for Limpopo.

Ntlemeza’s appointment took effect on October 1, until such time as a permanent appointment is made.

Ntlemeza steps into the boots of Lieutenant-General Amon Mashigo, who was the provincial commissioner for Limpopo until he left the South African Police Service at the end of September after 34 years of service.

Mashigo left behind a province with the lowest crime statistics in the country. Shortlisting for a permanent replacement has been done and interviews will be conducted in the middle of October. It is hoped that an appointment will be made by the beginning of either November or December this year.

Gwamasenga Brothers destroy Liverpool In their SAB League match at Gwamasenga on brutally crushed 5-1.

Saturday, Gwamasenga United Brothers were Liverpool managed to match the home side too good for Madala Liverpool, whom they pound for pound in the first half, but their stamina vanished as the game progressed.

It took United Brothers nine minutes to open their account.

Their fast forward, Mashudu Malusha, made no mistake, following a beautiful pass from Oscar Mulangaphuma. The visitors from Dzwerani village did not waste much time before retaliating. Their solitary goal came in the 18th minute.

Dynamos donate points to Western Stars Madombidzha Western Stars strengthened their position in the Safa Vhembe SAB League Stream E when they beat Tshiozwi Dynamos 3-2 in a tough match played at Madombidzha on Sunday.

Although two of their key players went into the referee’s book in the opening minutes, Dynamos continued to fight as an organised team. The two players who were cautioned with cards for rough tackling were Marks Mavhandu and Mpho Netshiendeulu of Dynamos.

The visiting side came close to scoring in the 8th minute, but Mpho Mavhandu shot over the crossbar with only the keeper left. The visitors scored from a corner from Marks Mavhandu’s header from a kick taken by Mashudu Nengovhela in the 20th minute.

Their celebration was cut short, as Lufuno Ndou scored from a free kick.

The home team would have had only themselves to blame had they lost the match. They abused countless scoring opportunities in the first half.

Dynamos increased the margin when Alugumi Mamugudubi scored a beautiful goal that left keeper Tshimanagdzo Masala stranded. The scoreboard was reading 2-1 in favour of Dynamos at half time.

The visitors left Vhutshilo Mafunisa in the dressing room and brought on Phakhamani Ramatsitsi.

The Stars came back strongly in the last half. They continue to mount pressure on the defence of the opponents. Percy Munonoka passed the ball to the advancing Lufuno Ndou of Stars, whose balloon landed in the roof of the net to make the score 2-2.
