Doctorate for young scientist extracts can also work indirectly against pathogens by boosting the immune system,” she said.

By Elmon Tshikhudo More than 500 students from different disciplines were rewarded for their hard work when they attained their qualifications during the September graduation ceremony of the University of Venda that took place at the university auditorium last Friday. Friends and relatives ululated at the top of their voices when their loved ones ascended the stage to receive their qualifications. Univen’s chancellor, Mr Kgalema Motlanthe, officiated at the event. He said that the qualifications should assist the students in making an impact in the mainstream economy and being of benefit to the community. He commended the students for their dedication and hard work, saying their achievements symbolize hope. A young scientist and part-time lecturer at Univen, Dr Muendi Sigidi, received a doctorate in microbiology. The title of her research is Selection and evaluation of ten medicinal plants used in the Vhembe district for life-threatening infections. The 33-year-old scientist from Thohoyandou Unit D says the study investigated claims by traditional healers to treat HIV/Aids by evaluating the in-vitro cytotoxicity, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and immunomodulatory potential of 10 selected medicinal plants. “The study has demonstrated that plant extracts are indeed an alternate source of therapy against some life-threatening infectious agents. “Women need to stick together in love and harmony” - pastor By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho A group of people recently benefited from the one-day women’s conference hosted by the Greater Calvary Church at the Elias Resort. The event was also attended by men and youths as a way of uniting different social groups for the purpose of unity and social cohesion. The guest speaker, Pastor Livhuwani Netshiongolwe of El Shaddai Christian Centre, urged women to learn to trust in God even when they were facing trying challenges in life. “You need to trust in Jesus Christ and stay away from being controlled by emotions and mood swings,” she said. “Here I am speaking about a woman who is controlled by her emotions and loses respect for her husband.” She stated that emotions such as anger and hard-heartedness had contributed to many divorces, which eventually affected generations of families. “If you are a woman with power - the kind who inspires discipline and trust - you’ll build stronger relationships and families,” she said. “A powerful woman always wakes up at night and prays. She does not compete with the church as our mother, but rather supports her in all duties.” The church’s senior cleric, Apostle Khathutshelo Ramovha, thanked all women and further encouraged them to support one another. “Women need to motivate one another, or else they may end up getting discouraged by the winds of this world,” Ramovha said.

Prifix is the new hip hop king By Maanda Bele Since the first Tshivenda music awards in 2012, the category of best Tshivenda hip hop album has been associated with the Venrap movement. It has become Venrap culture that the artist who wins the Tshivenda hip-hop award is crowned by fans as the king of Tshivenda hip hop. This has happened over the past years and the first artist to be crowned was the Venrap legend Mizo Phyll, followed by C-Jay and Kashflow in 2015. This year, the popular storyteller Tendani Mathaga, better known as Prifix, is the new king. In an interview with the paper after winning the award, Prifix said that he had made it because of the support from his parents, all the people from Mapate where he was born and raised, his fans, teachers and all who voted for him and who believed in him and his talent. “Mostly, I thank God my Father for all the good things and the life He gave me.” He said to other nominated artists who did not win that they were good and talented. “It is just not your time now. Your right time is coming, so just

keep on working as hard as you can and congratulate those who won.”

Eskom recently donated 20 swings for the playground of Mamathieledzha Primary School at Ha-Sidou village. The principal of the school, Mr Mmbangiseni Nengwenani, said the swings were part of the school’s entertainment facilities for the youngsters. “It is also part of outdoor learning. We hope our kids will be motivated, because they will no longer rely on classroom learning only, but they will be entertained outside,” added Nengwenani.
