Live for over a century - only to

be killed by thugs?

Bruised body of Madodonga pensioner (114) found

“This is a tragedy. Who would want to kill a defenceless old man?” This was the question on everyone’s lips after a resident of Madodonga, who was more than a century old, was murdered. John Makukwe was allegedly killed and robbed of his money on 13 May.

“Topless” Jeeps in Vhembe

Despite the cold weather in Vhembe the past weekend, the Venda Khartel and Jeep Nation still managed to host a successful international Jeep Go Topless Day. This is a celebration designated by Jeep drivers globally to mark the start of spring in the northern hemisphere and the end of the warm summer season in the southern hemisphere. Photographed are Godfrey Muthabeni (left) and Munyadziwa Mukhethoni of the Venda Khartel Jeep Club at Mapitas. See story on page 2. Photo: Maanda Bele.

Makukwe’s body was found in his home by family members. He had visible bruises and wounds to his head and body. How he died remains a mystery. The police spokesperson, Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba, confirmed that an inquest docket had been opened. No-one has been arrested yet and their investigations continue. The family and police are pinning their hopes on the post-mortem to provide them with answers.

Makukwe was buried at Madodonga on Saturday, 20 May. One of his daughters,

Ms Dorah Ngwana (68), said the family still did not know what to make of their father’s death. “We have no idea what could have happened, but we are suspecting foul play. We still cannot believe that he is gone, and that this is how he died at his age. We are all deeply saddened.”

Ngwana said that her father had had very little eyesight left at the end, but that his hearing had still been good and, although he had spoken slowly, his mind had still been sharp enough to communicate. She said he had loved to talk about the olden days.

Makukwe’s identity document shows that he was born on 30 December 1908, which would have made him 114 years old. This would also mean that one of the oldest people in the world would have lived here in Vhembe. Currently, the oldest living person in the world (whose age could be verified), is Ms

Maria Branyas of Spain (116), who was born in March 1907. The verification gets done by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG), a global organisation of researchers in various fields of gerontology, based in Los Angeles, California.

In South Africa, several sources list Mrs Anna Tsatsawani Makanete as being the oldest living person. She was born only a few months before John Makukwe, on 25 June 1908. She is not listed on the GRG records as her age could not be verified.

Whether Makukwe’s birth date was correctly recorded by the Department of Home Affairs is debatable. Numerous errors occurred when such data was captured and the date was often a guestimate. The fact, however, remains that Mr Makukwe was very old.

Makukwe was born on a farm called Granite, next to Bandelierkop, and grew

up in Luonde village before he eventually settled at Madodonga. According to Dorah Ngwana, her oldest siblings (the first- and second-born) were born in 1940 and 1944. They are both deceased now. The third-born, who is still alive, was born in 1947, while Ngwana (the lastborn) was born in 1955.

chairperson and deputy secretary of the Vhembe region, had to be filled. The two positions became vacant after the murder of the previous deputy secretary and Collins Chabane Mayor Moses Maluleke last year and the death of the deputy chairperson of the regional ANC, Adv Makonde Mathivha. The Vhembe region is Limpopo’s second-biggest ANC constituency.

The current mayor of Makhado Municipality, Samuel Munyai, was elected as deputy chairperson, with Miyelani Chauke, a councillor of the Vhembe District Municipality, as deputy secretary. The two joined the chairperson, Tshitereke Matibe, secretary Rudzani Ludere and Cllr Mihloti Muhlophe (treasurer) in the executive committee of the regional office of the ANC.

After he was elected as deputy chairperson, Munyai pledged to work alongside the other elected leaders. “There is only one ANC in this region, and we will never allow it to be divided into two. We need to focus on the resolutions and declarations made at this council and not focus on individual aspirations,” he said.

“Unrepentant”

murderer gets 18 years sentence

Pesani Percy Dzavakwa (37) from Zimbabwe was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment for murder by the Sibasa Regional Court on Thursday, 18 May.

Dzavakwa and the victim, Amen Nemadodzi, were drinking at a bar lounge in Dididi in February this year when Dzavakwa accused Nemadodzi of stealing his money and stabbed him to death with a knife.

According to Ms Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, the regional spokesperson for the NPA, State Adv Rabelani Mutsinda Makhera had submitted that the accused was a heartless person who showed no respect for the life of the deceased, and the way he had stabbed his victim was as if he were killing a snake to make sure that it was dead. Malabi-Dzhangi said the accused had pleaded guilty because the State’s evidence was overwhelming. She said that the presiding officer, Marupeng Daniel Mabitsela, had emphasised that Dzavakwa was not remorseful about his deeds, and that he was very cruel.

The prosecution welcomed the sentence and applauded the good work done by Makhera and the investigating officer, Sgt Shudufhadzo Britney Sivhaga. “We hope that the sentence imposed will deter would-be offenders.”

Jeeps go topless in Vhembe and help Unarine centre

Despite the cold weather in Vhembe the past weekend, the

Venda Khartel Jeep Club, Mr Thivhileli Makatu, said the items they donated were voluntary contributions from members, their business networks, and private corporates, and coordinated by

“Today we left Unarine in a better space to fulfil their mandate for accessible, equal and equitable education. Approximately R52 000 worth of goods were donated, including power tools for the woodwork workshop, household goods for the kitchen, school necessities and toys, dignity packs, and personal care items. The spin-off to our activities is immense; the local economy benefits; we eat and sleep at locally owned properties. As we enjoy the landscape gifted to us by our ancestors, we do it responsibly, immersing ourselves in local culture, the environment and nature, aimed at raising the tourism profile of the Vhembe District Municipali-

Mr Francis Mukovha, the deputy secretary of the Unarine Day Care Centre’s board, said they were overjoyed with the donation they had received. “We are very happy, and these donations will be very

helpful. The learners pay for most of the things now and at least it will meet them halfway. We still need a lot of things and above all, we need a hall, sponge mattresses to sleep on, as most of the learners are always sleeping, and wheelchairs,” Mukosi said.

After their charity work was concluded, the Jeeps departed again from Tsianda village to the Thathe Vondo Sacred Forest via the Tshisahulu road, turning up to Duthuni, Phiphidi and on to the Tshirovha Waterfalls for off-roading, lunch and networking.

Kind-hearted Anelia shows compassion for injured man

News from Musina

In a cruel, hard world, knowing that some kind, good-hearted people who value human life are still among us is a relief. Anelia Botha from Musina is one of them. She recently showed that only a little compassion and humanity for others are necessary to make a big difference in this life.

Like every other day, Anelia was driving to work on the N1, past the China Mall shopping centre on Friday, 5 May, when she saw a man lying in the middle of the road. Although he was clearly in great pain, people were driving past and around him. Some actually stopped to take videos and photos of him, yet no-one seemed to make any effort to help this man.

When Anelia pulled over next to the road to see what was going on, she was told that the man had been run over by a car. The driver was still sitting inside his car, in shock. “I immediately went over to the injured man and realised that his pulse was very low. I was worried that he might die, so I started to pray for him. I took my towel, put it around his bleeding head and asked the Lord to save his life. Bystanders were staring at me as I sat there with my hand on the man’s bleeding head, praying for nearly 40 minutes before the police and ambulance arrived.”

Anelia, who is a member of the Musina Community Church, said the man’s family members had taken her number and called her two days later to meet them at Messina Hospital. “When we arrived there, we found the victim, Elvis Tachiona, in high spirits. To our amazement, he had no internal or brain injuries as a result of the accident. Recalling how he had lain there helplessly and badly hurt in the road, I now saw the greatness of our Lord Jesus Christ,” she said.

After Elvis was discharged from hospital, Anelia went to visit him at his home and prayed for him again. “I am a born-again Christian, so I believe in the power of prayer. That is also why I helped Elvis, even though I didn’t even know him. I am very happy that I could help him in his hour of need, but I’m worried about people who don’t seem to value human life at all. How can you continue taking videos or photos while you know someone is in pain and needs assistance?” she asked. Filled with joy, Elvis thanked Anelia for her kindness. “I don’t have enough words to thank her for saving my life,” he said with a big smile.

Retired policeman shot and killed

Residents of Shayandima, and the Rasalanavho family in particular, are shocked by the death of retired policeman Jonathan Ntakuseni Rasalanavho (72) of Shayandima Zone 5, who was shot and killed by unknown assailants at his home on Thursday, 18 May.

The incident happened somewhere between 06:00 and 06:30. Neighbours, who spoke on condition of anonymity, say they had heard gunshots and, upon closer inspection, had seen the old man lying in his

ing his murder remain sketchy and subject to police investigations, but the suspicion is that Rasalanavho had received a call, apparently from the killers, that had lured him out of the house.

The former policeman, who used to be based in the Gauteng area, is said to have had another home in Gauteng where he had spent the better part of his life. Hardly a year has passed since he returned to his home township for good.

Residents are now whispering among themselves, and the question on most people’s lips is whether this was a robbery or a contract killing. The majority

Laduma Bakery destroyed in fire

More than 30 workers were left jobless when one of the best-known convectional bakeries in the Vhembe District, Laduma Bakery, was gutted by fire on Saturday night. The bakery, situated in Makonde village, has been supplying fresh bread and cakes to more than 300 villages in the district every day.

According to one of the bakery’s employees, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the cause of the fire is not known yet. “We were waiting for the last car to check in from delivering bread at about 19:00, when we noticed a black cloud of smoke emanating from the

baking section. Upon investigating, we found that the whole baking section was on fire. We ran for the fire extinguishers to try and put the fire out, but it was too late.”

He said that, as they were running out, away from the fire, they were able to grab a box containing all the car keys, and they managed to move all the cars from the building in time.

According to our source, the bakery employed at least 35 workers (excluding part-time employees). “For so many workers to lose their jobs all at once - in a country where people are being retrenched every day because of the weak economy - is a disaster. We only pray for divine intervention, otherwise some of them will be

facing very hard times ahead,” he said.

One of the female workers, who arrived for duty the next morning, only to find the devastation that was left, said she did not know how she was going to raise her children now. “Oh, Jesus, I am finished,” she said, before picking up her lunch box and heading home.

At the time of our going to press, efforts to contact the confectionery bakery’s manager, Mr Edward Mulovhedzi, had not been successful. Meanwhile, the Vhembe Police’s acting communications officer, Sgt Vuledzani Dathi, said that the police had opened a docket. “Our investigations are continuing,” he said.

Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, community leader and founder of Munna ndi Nnyi Men’s Forum, visited the grief-stricken family and expressed his dismay at the increasing crime in Vhembe. “Our communities are under siege. Day in and day out we wake up to sad news of violent crimes like murder, hijackings and robberies. We are no longer safe, even at our homes, and we need to come together and stand up in the fight against crime. Let us join forces with the police, and we will beat crime,” he said.

Acting spokesperson for the police in Vhembe Sgt Lokie Vhonani Masia confirmed

Dry taps at the Makhado police station causing a health hazard

SAPS employees at Makhado Police Station in Louis Trichardt have reason to be concerned over their health. According to information shared with Limpopo Mirror, the station has been without water for more than eight months now, with employees having to bring their own drinking water from home and fetching buckets of water from outside taps to flush the toilets. When the toilets are blocked, they have to go to the nearby garage where they pay R2 every time they need to relieve themselves.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror on condition of anonymity, one of the police officers who work at Makhado Police Station said the current situation was very bad. He said that, as a result of there being no water, the toilets could not be cleaned, leaving the staff exposed to serious health hazards.

The police officer said that staff members had raised the issue with the provincial office several times, but nothing was done about it. “Employees are forced to work under conditions that are not conducive to a healthy and safe environment. It must be noted that the lack of water exposes us all to possible infection. Police officers cannot leave the police station with diseases due to poor hygiene control. We feel unsafe. This is a worrisome working environment,” he said.

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Ms Tidimalo Chuene said that Makhado Police Station operated in an area where the municipality should be in a position to provide water as one of the basic services but did not. “Unfortunately, the station is not immune from water shortages when the lo-

Lifetime service award given to Vhembe’s philanthropist, Solly Noor

cal authority is unable to provide water for the area. We are hoping for a speedy resolution to these water challenges in the area to enable the SAPS to provide a healthy working environment for all stakeholders utilising the station.”

Chuene added that the SAPS management in the area was working on temporary relief measures, including delivering water to the station.

Makhado Police Station is not the only police station, however, that suffers due to the lack of water. Tshilwavhusiku SAPS has been without running water since 2020, and because of this, awaiting-trial prisoners have to be incarcerated at the Makhado Correctional Services and Mara Police Station - more than 20km away. When the prisoners must appear in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court, they have to be collected and transported from Louis Trichardt and Mara, all the way back to Tshilwavhusiku. Because of the issue of water shortages, members from the Tshilwavhusiku SAPS spend most of their time transporting prisoners back and forth in the vehicles that should be utilised for crime prevention.

neur and philanthropist Mr Solly Noor received a coveted Masjidul Quds Lifetime Community Service award on Saturday night during a gala event held in Kelvin Grove, Cape Town.

He is one of five South Africans that were honoured this year by the Cape Town-based organisation. The other recipients were Dr Imtiaaz Suliman (founding member of Gift of the Givers), Sheikh Sadullah Khan (a world-renowned Islamic Scholar and CEO of Islamia College), Mrs Zuleigha Mayat (author of several books, including the acclaimed Indian Delights) and Nakhlistan (a community-based organisation feeding thousands of poor and destitute people for the past 39 years).

Masjidul Quds is an historic Islamic Mosque complex in Gatesville, Cape Town. The building is a replica of the Al Aqsa Mosque in Palestine and houses the Islamic college, which offers diploma and degree courses and an afternoon Islamic School for younger children. Masjidul Quds hosts a special inter-faith IFTAAR every year to spread the message of unity in diversity among

leading South Africans. Among the many world-renowned dignitaries who have graced this event, was the late Anglican bishop, Desmond Tutu. The organisation also recognises achievers and those individuals who contribute to the service of humanity and the cause of justness. When Mr Noor’s resumé was read, special mention was made of the support of his wife, Zohra. He received the accolade for his noble work in philanthropy, human rights and corporate excellence. He is a former president of the World Memon Organisation and served on numerous boards of NGOs. He is well known in

the business world, where he served on boards such as that of ABSA Bank. He also served as a trustee of the Wits University Foundation and was a director of the Investec property group. Although the Noor family no longer stays in Louis Trichardt, he is widely regarded as a local resident, and he still owns many business and residential properties in the region. In the early 1990s, he served as chairperson of the Greater Louis Trichardt Transitional Local Council’s executive committee. This was a tumultuous period, during which strong leadership was needed to ensure the smooth transition to a new political dispensation.

salary glitches sorted out

The Public Servants Asso-

ciation (PSA) union in Limpopo visited the Beitbridge Border Post last week to see whether the payment problems experienced by its members who work under the Border Management Authority (BMA), had been sorted out. This came after some of their members received incorrect salaries and were faced with a number of other challenges under the BMA.

The BMA was established in April this year, with employees from various government departments transferred to the entity as part of government’s effort to strengthen border management.

According to the PSA, the transferred employees were removed from the government remuneration system (personnel and salary system) to a privately procured system. This system, however, presented problems for some of the employees, who received incorrect salaries.

They also claimed that their personal information on their salary advice was incorrect, and third-party payments, including medical aid, bonds, pensions funds, and cars, were not made.

Some of the employees further received messages from the Government Employees Pension Fund, indicating that they had “resigned”, whilst others struggled to consult doctors as they were informed

that no payments were made to the medical funds by their new employer. In addition, they are still waiting to be issued with uniforms.

The employees were left stranded, with no one to contact or report these issues to as the helpdesk that was established to attend to problems failed to respond to enquiries.

“Our members told us that life had been very difficult before these glitches were finally fixed. Some received notices from third parties that they have not received any payment, but we are happy now that most of the employees’ salary glitches have been fixed,” said Lawrence Muvhango, the Limpopo PSA’s marketing officer.

Why don’t you rather fix our roads, Rambuda youths ask Thulamela

Youths from Dzimauli village, under the banner of the Dzimauli Youth Movement, have called on the Thulamela Municipality to fix their roads, so that development can take place in their area. The call came when Thulamela’s mayor, Sarah Rambuda, along with her executive committee and other officials, visited the village on Friday, 19 May, to brief Vho-Thovhele Rambuda Ratshibvumo II and other stakeholders about their intention to tax all businesses in villages.

Some of the youths who were present at the meeting seized the opportunity to engage the mayor about their frustrations. Fhumulani Murigwathoho read a petition listing their demands to the mayor.

“We are not at all happy about the condition of our main D3695 road. This is the road that is supposed to bring development to the area, but no investor would be attracted this side because of the bad road,” he said.

“This road was supposed to have been tarred a long time ago, but we do not know what stalled the construction. This area has many tourist attractions and we had hoped tourists

would come in numbers and boost the local economy. We hoped investors would come and build malls. We are also an agricultural community, but big markets cannot access our produce because of the bad roads,” he said. Murigwathoho further indicated that the way the mayor ignored the road that she herself used every day was surprising. “How can the mayor promise other communities better roads while her own roads are inaccessible? Charity begins at home. Future generations will blame her for not doing anything to improve their lives during her tenure as mayor. The mayor used to drive an expensive Mercedes sedan, but because of the bad

roads, she is now using a 4x4 bakkie. What about us who do not have the luxury of choosing cars? We are now saying, please complete our promised road or we will be forced to embark on protests,” Murigwathoho said.

Thovhele Ratshibvumo II agreed that the roads were very bad. “We are not happy at all about the state of our roads. There cannot be any development with this type of bad roads. The community is not happy, and we call on Government to do something about the state of our roads,” he said. Efforts to elicit comment from the municipal spokesperson, Mr Nndwamato Tshiila, drew a blank as he ignored calls to him on Monday (22nd) and Tuesday (23rd).

A 72-year-old man from Dzimauli village, who seems to be suffering from an unknown disease that has caused him to lose his fingers and toes, is pleading with the government and medical doctors to come to his rescue as he is living in terrible pain.

Mr George Munzhelele said his problems started one day, years ago, when he pricked his left thumb on a splinter from a plank. “Within a week, my thumb was so swollen that it started to rot until it eventually fell off. Suddenly, all my fingers started rotting and fell off. This mysterious sensation moved to my right hand, and I lost all my fingers [on that hand]. Then it began in my left foot, and before long, my toes fell off too. Now, it is starting to eat at my other foot. I feel as if there is something moving inside my body while it is eating my flesh,” he said.

Munzhelele has only two toes left on his right foot. He says he has been to the Donald Fraser Hospital many times, but that the doctors do not seem to know what he is suffering from.

About eight years ago, Pastor Annah Ramabulana, who is also from Dzimauli village, heard about Munzhelele’s plight and paid him a visit. She said she found him in a terrible state, living in a dilapidated room without a door and only a few sheets of zinc that barely covered the roof. “I had to build a house for him and bought him a bed and cooking utensils. But because he wet himself all the time, the bed did not last long,” she said.

She recently organised a party to celebrate his 72nd birthday and said she was surprised when his two daughters appeared from nowhere to attend the party. “I did not even know he had children. I was very happy to see them, thinking that they would take him to their house to take care of him, but they refused as they are both married,” she said.

Pastor Ramabulana has asked one of her congregants, Ms Azwihangwisi Lirumo, who is employed as a cleaner at the church, if she would help the old man. Now, every day on her way to work, Lirumo stops at Munzhelele’s house, cleans his room, cooks for him, washes his clothes, and even changes his diaper and bathes him. All this she does without being compensated for it.

When asked how she did it, Lirumo said she did this out of her love of God. “It is not easy at all, but even though I am not being paid for helping him, I know God has chosen me to do it, and I will continue helping him,” she said. Those who would like to contribute to helping Munzhelele can contact Pastor Ramabulana at 072 208 5149.

Don’t bring dangerous weapons to school, warns Colonel Rikhotso

The station commander of the Malamulele Police Station, Col Kanelani Rikhotso, warned learners that the police would not tolerate their showing up at school with dangerous weapons such as guns and knives. He addressed the local communities during the SAPS’s Crime Awareness Campaign, held at the Malamulele Community Hall on Friday, 19 May.

Fhulufelo Singo honoured by local farmers for contribution to region

On Monday (15th) a function was held at the Living Rock Church of Christ to honour long-serving local agricultural adviser, Mr Fulufhelo Orbet Singo. The function, which coincided with his 58th birthday celebration, was organised by local farmers from the Tshiombo Irrigation Scheme, under the Matangari Service Centre.

Singo has worked selflessly and with dedication with farmers since 1988, and tremendous development in farming businesses has taken place in the area.

One of the farmers, Ms Margareth Tsiku, said they had

felt they had to do something to show their appreciation for the good work Singo was doing to assist farmers in the area. “We should not wait for someone to pass on before showering him with praises. We are here to honour an unsung hero who is always available for us at any given time. He organises workshops for us, and we know how to use pesticides and fertilisers, and we even have certificates to that effect,” she said.

Singo’s colleague, Ms Prudence Nenweli, described him as a very humble, accessible and dedicated leader who had warmly welcomed her in 2015.

Also speaking during the event, Khosi Vho-Tovhowani Mathoho of Tshiombo, outside

Thohoyandou, said he had known Singo for many years since he had first arrived at the village fresh from college. “Singo has been a game changer in this village. Since his arrival, things have vastly improved and farmers are able to ensure that we have a constant supply of food, and even supplying outlying villages. He served this community with distinction and with commitment. We are very lucky to have him, and he deserves this honour on his birthday,” he said.

Mathoho further implored that the good working relationship between the farmers and Singo should persist to ensure that farmers produce enough food for the community.

Rikhotso was joined by other members from the Malamulele Police Station, Ms Patience Tshimangadzo from

the Malamulele Circuit Office, and the school principals and learners from four selected schools around Malamulele.

“Schools are meant for learning and teaching and nothing else, and those found coming to school with dangerous weapons will be arrested. Your future will be doomed if we arrest you and take your fingerprints, because you will never get a job with a criminal record,” Rikhotso said, also warning bullies that they had no place in schools.

He gave learners hope that, despite some being from poor families and rural areas, they too can reach the sky and

produce meaningful leaders in the future if they concentrate on their schoolwork and study hard.

During the event, SAPS Malamulele, in conjunction with the local Community Policing Forum, also donated school shoes to learners of Xikatsa Primary, Phatima Primary, Pfunekani Primary and Magoda Primary.

On behalf of the principals of these four schools, Mr Albert Khosa conveyed their thanks for the donation and said they were grateful that their learners were taught good morals from an early age.

When addressing the recipients during the ceremony, the acting area commissioner of the department in the Vhembe District, Ms Rachel Kutama, thanked them for dedicating their lives to helping offenders in changing their attitude and participating in educational programmes that prepare such offenders to become responsible members of society in the future.

Kutama also thanked the families of these employees for allowing them to spend most of their lifetime making sure that criminals were kept safely in prison, so that society could live in peace.

Tributes for Musina’s late Cllr Selina Phiri at funeral

Musina News

Lucia Hlavangwane, who shared most of her time with the late Cllr Selina Tebogo Phiri, described her friend as someone who had stood for the truth until her last day on earth. Hlavangwane was addressing mourners during Phiri’s funeral service, which took place in Musina on Saturday, 20 May.

Wrapped in the South African flag, Phiri’s casket arrived with a guard of honour by municipal traffic officers, who carried it to the packed Nancefield Multipurpose Centre.

Hlavangwane said she had given Phiri her full support in her last days. “We used to visit her while she was sick, and she would put on a brave face even when she was in pain. I have learnt a lot from her, although she was younger than me. She loved her work, and she was always available whenever we needed her. Selina was a strong woman who always wanted peace. We will miss her beautiful smile and kind heart,” she said.

Representing the family, Mr Peter

Phiri said they were all still going through a difficult time after Phiri’s death. “Our beloved daughter was the kind of a person who made sure she got what she wanted in life. She was a role model and inspiration to everyone in the family and the community at large. It is very hard to say goodbye to our beautiful angel, but we cannot challenge death. She will live in our hearts and minds forever, and her legacy will remain with us eternally. One day we will meet again in heaven.”

Cllr Viviene Milanzi from Musina Municipality said, as a member of the executive committee of council, Phiri had left a huge void in the service-delivery plans of the municipality. She conveyed her sincere condolences to the Phiri family and everyone who had had the pleasure of knowing and working with the deceased.

After the formal programme at the Nancefield Multipurpose Centre, mourners proceeded to Nancefield Cemetery, where Reverend NA Mbilinganyi, of the Musina Holiness Church of Christ, conducted the burial rites before Phiri was finally laid to rest.

Thulamela partners with Vhembe TVET College

Thulamela Local Municipality has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), known as Finya Zwanda, with Vhembe TVET College at the Makwarela main campus on Thursday, 19 May.

The memorandum stipulates that the two institutions will work together to ensure that skills and knowledge are shared between staff and students, and that students are placed in various industrial activities within the Thulamela Local Municipality to address service delivery and equip them for the job market.

The event was also attended by the local municipal manager, Mr Masala Makumule, executive members of the council, all senior municipal managers, senior officials from Vhembe TVET College, and a representative from the University

New hawkers’ stalls in Louis Trichardt help 90 vendors to market and store produce

The new hawkers’ market in Louis Trichardt’s CBD, between Burger and Kruger Street, has finally been completed, with several of the informal traders already having finished setting up their new stalls.

The hawkers readily agree that the new marketplace is much more business friendly now, compared to the zinc stalls they used to sell their food, fruit and vegetables from in the past. With the new stalls, they can lock up their wares inside their stalls before they leave for home at the end of the day. They also have water taps at the end of each row of stalls; before, they had to fetch water from a communal water tap next to the public toilets at the marketplace. Furthermore, the whole marketplace is now neatly paved, which looks much neater than the bare red soil, which would become muddy and messy when it rained.

chat with some of the hawkers to hear what they thought of the new setup.

Hulisani Mabasa (26), who was busy sorting and packing tomatoes at her stall, told us that she was expecting to get more customers as the marketplace now provided a bigger and cleaner environment. Mabasa has been in the business since 2021. She took over from her grandmother, who she said was now too old to run the business.

“I am very happy about the new marketplace. We even have better water facilities. Before, I could not manage to carry a 25-litre water container all the way from the taps at the communal toilets to our stall. We

also used to travel back and forth with our food stuff, but now we can just lock it inside our stall and go home,” said Grace Rabhuli from Madombidzha, who prepares and sells meals to customers visiting the town.

Phatheni Mushavhi, the chairperson of the hawkers’ association in the Louis Trichardt CBD, said he was also happy with the new marketplace, but felt it was too small to accommodate all the hawkers. “There is only space for 60 hawkers to sell their fruit and veg produce, and 30 hawkers to sell prepared meals. Although it looks much neater, there is not enough space for everyone,” he said.

of Venda, Professor Joseph Francis.

On behalf of the municipality, Rambuda said that the MoU would assist with local economic development, including the fight against unemployment in Thulamela. She further pointed out that the relationship between the two institutions would not only benefit students but the rest of the community too. “It will assist in building a better future for young people and the community of Thulamela at large,” she said.

Hlekane expressed the college’s appreciation. “We will make it a point to implement the MoU. I believe in teamwork, because when we are united, we can go a long way in developing young people for a brighter future. As a college, we are a beacon of hope for our surrounding communities. Therefore, we are going to make this a living document,” she said.

According to Makhado Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, the market can accommodate about 90 hawkers. “These hawkers, however, must clean the area themselves, and rates will have to be revised as per municipal policy.”

Bobodi says the police would further conduct regular patrols through the area to ensure the safety of the hawkers and their products.

Early on Thursday morning (11 May), Limpopo Mirror took a walk through the marketplace and had a

Ntshembo forges unique path in beauty Debut poem collection for Netshavhakololo

With a burning passion for fashion and an innate ability to captivate his audiences, Ntshembho Moyabe from Bungeni is determined to shatter barriers and redefine beauty standards in the industry. Known as the Black King within modelling circles, Moyabe has embarked on a new venture as the founder of Miss & Mr Bungeni, a pageant scheduled to be hosted in October this year.

The 24-year-old Moyabe’s goal is to provide a platform for aspiring models in his local community to shine and fulfil their dreams, just as he has done. In addition to his modelling career, Moyabe is also a sculptor, embellishing some of the houses in his village with a more sophisticated (or unique) look, as well as art resorts.

Moyabe started experimenting with sculpting in 2015, and initially used clay and egg boxes. However, since 2021, he has been focussing more on pottery, using cement. These days he aims to make a lasting impact by inspiring others through the art of modelling.

From a young age, Moyabe had a strong desire to grace the catwalks

and become a symbol of style and grace. “I drew inspiration from my self-confidence and unwavering belief in myself. Art and modelling are my true passions, and I wholeheartedly dedicate myself to these pursuits,” he said.

Moyabe has already achieved notable accolades in his modelling career. He was crowned first Prince in the Mr and Miss Hlanganani pageant in 2019. In 2021, he won the Mr Face of Mavambe title, as well as the Mr Momes Place 2022/23.

The ambitious artist successfully completed his matric at Marholeni High School in 2022. He said that he used to sketch his unique designs and collaborate with fashion designers to bring them to life. “As I revel in expressing my individuality, I firmly believe that models play a crucial role in promoting fashion trends and personal style. With each step I take, I empower others to embrace their passions and fearlessly pursue their dreams, reminding us all that, with determination and self-belief, anything is possible,” he said.

Rude Kid raises the bar with new single

Wanga Sadiki, popularly known as Rude Kid Venda or Chidochi, released his latest single and its music video, titled Ngiyasebenza (featuring Crosswave and Mass the Difference) last Friday. The track is from his upcoming debut extended play (EP), L’INIZIO

Rude Kid Venda, who hails from Mangondi near Thohoyandou, is a renowned Tshivenda musician, songwriter and producer. The 23-year-old rapper is known as the most featured artist in Venda, featuring in the music of the likes of Makhadzi, Mapara A Jazz, Mizo Phyll, Gusba Banana, Fistos Valley and The Capable Boys, to mention but a few. Although he has released several singles, he has never released his own full album, and that is why his fans are so excited about Ngiyasebenza and the rest of the new EP to come.

L’INIZIO will touch on many sensitive issues, like breaking from poverty, heartbreak, depression, pain, struggles, stress to victory, overcoming, success, royalty,

and conquering,” he said.

Rude Kid rose to fame about three years ago when videos of him freestyling in Thavhani Mall started to trend on social media, and ever since he has become the fans’ favourite. The music video of his previous single, Mathuthu Banga, reached a million views on YouTube in only three months. His main drive is to inspire and influence the youth of Africa and beyond in a positive way with lyrics rich in everyday life, struggles and challenges. His aspiration is to make a big mark in the music industry and become a household name. He says he enjoys freestyling and remaking classic hip-hop, as well as new-age hip-hop songs by his favourite local and international idols. He uses online platforms, such as YouTube, as his mainstream go-to platform to distribute his music to a wider audience. In 2021, Rude Kid started a concept called “Freestyle Friday”, where he consistently released a freestyle track every Friday. With this, his fanbase grew even more with a new audience every week.

Phuluso

from Tswinga recently released his first collection of Tshivenda poems, called Tanzhe lavhutali Netshavhakololo attended Muvhavha High School in Tswinga, where his love and talent for writing poetry were first discovered and cultivated. “I was in the tenth grade when one of the teachers gave us an assignment to write a poem. I presented my poem to the entire class and my teacher encouraged me to continue writing,” he said.

After he completed matric, Netshavhakololo started compiling 40 of his own poems, with the aim to have them published. He decided to approach a local printing company, and his book was published at the end of April this year.

He said his father was his greatest inspiration, because he read most of his poems and had given him valuable pointers to refine them. “My father is an

intelligent guy. Everything about him defines art,” he said.

Netshavhakololo said he would like to see himself growing in his career as an author in the coming years. He believes that poets are the right people to keep language alive through their work. “It came as a shock to me when I realised that our Tshivenda language was melting like a hailstone. That is why I decided to have my book published. It is up to us to record our words and idioms in the form of poetry,” he said.

He wants his book to have a strong impact on the readers. “The content in this book is suitable for all age groups and not necessarily the youth alone. It encourages the reader to not give up on life or on their dreams. After reading it, the reader should feel motivated to start a new thing in their life. It talks about discovering yourself and not relying on other people to define you. Once you re-define yourself, you will begin to realise your worth,” he said.

Mashudu Ravele (21)

from Ha-Masakona has published her first novel, titled Ndivhuze Nyyi?

(Who do I tell?) to encourage victims to break their silence and speak out bravely against abuse. This inspiring novel was published on Tuesday, 9 May, and Ravele is positive that it will have a great impact in many readers’ lives.

Mashudu’s personal

journey exemplifies the power of perseverance and the determination to share stories that resonate deeply with others. In addition to her writing pursuits, she possesses a remarkable talent as a praise poet, drawing inspiration from the norms and traditions of her Tshivenda culture.

Her passion for reading and writing was sparked in the fourth grade, while she attended Tshilambuvhe Primary School. In 2021, she published her first

collection of poems, titled Tshisima Tsha Dora. Having completed a diploma in journalism at Rosebank College last year, Mashudu is currently pursuing further studies in communication science at the University of South Africa.

The primary objective of Ndivhuze Nyyi? is to shed light on the difficulties faced by young girls who often lack an outlet for their struggles, to help to empower them by urging them to promptly report instances

of abuse, regardless of the threats they may face. “Failing to report these kinds of incidents could jeopardise their lives. It also serves as a reminder that trusted family members should safeguard their children, rather than become the very source of harm that hinders their future prospects. I also aim to educate parents about the importance of recognising that poverty should not be imposed on their children and that accepting their circumstances

is crucial,” she said. Mashudu expressed her excitement over and gratitude for all the support she has received.

Xitsonga traditional musician

CIC Makaveli’s latest album, titled Sirha ra Vahanyi (The Grave of the Living), is a dancefloor sensation for those who love to move to the beat. The album, released on Sunday, 14 May, has already received an overwhelming response, leaving music lovers craving more.

Last year, the multilingual musician from Mdabula Mbhalati village in Malamulele released his fifth album, titled Ndyelo (Food Plate), packed with 12 tracks, which also garnered positive reaction from his supporters.

His latest offering consists of 13 captivating tracks, each meticulously crafted to transport listeners on a soul-stirring musical journey. “This album has received tremendous support and many people are thoroughly enjoying it. Since its release, I have been receiving calls and messages from fans expressing their excitement. They say it is even better than my previous successful albums. Vhugala Rambuda, an upcoming local musician, known by his stage name of Worth V Voculz, is determined to leave a lasting impression in the music industry.

Growing up in Vuwani, a community rich in cultural heritage, he was exposed to a diverse range of musical influences that ignited his own artistic exploration.

Worth V Voculz’s upbringing in a musical household, where his parents were pastors, introduced him to music. His journey began as a worship minister in his father’s church, where his passion, creativity, and deep desire to connect with his fans on a profound level were fuelled. “I found solace in the rhythm and soundscapes that music offers. It became the driving force behind my creative endeavours,” he said.

Today, in a world where music has the power to touch souls and inspire change, he is making waves with his unique fusion of genres and heartfelt lyrics. He has developed a sound that defies categorisation, blending elements of Pop, Afro-Pop, Hip-hop, and Afro into a captivating musical experience.

So far, he has released one full album, titled Athinga Neti (released in 2016), and he recently added another single to his whole list of previously released singles. The latest offering, called Wanga-Re-edition (featuring Romeo ThaGreatWhite), has been setting off some very good vibes within the local music scene. “This is my best work to date, and I strive to

The sky is the limit for Zanele “Mazet” Chauke, who joined the recently established community radio station, Maxelo Radio. Maxelo (meaning “weather” in English) started broadcasting live from Extension B in Malamulele in February this year.

Mazet (26) hosts the Maxelo Drive show from 13:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday, and is very excited and enthusiastic about her job at the radio station. “This is such a wonderful opportunity for me and others who did our learnership in radio production in July 2022. We were fortunate to have done our practice with our employer, Mandla Mchavi, who decided to establish a radio station as there was no community radio station in our area,” she said.

Mazeet was born and raised in Muchipise village, near Malamulele, and completed her diploma in media studies at the University of Mpumalanga. She is currently doing her degree in criminal justice at the University of

She says she always had great admiration for Munghana Lonene FM’s Swarisima host, Khensani Nyango. She hopes to one day become a seasoned presenter like Nyango and maybe end up working at the same radio station.

Maxelo Radio’s station manager, Mr Mandla Mchavi, said he had come up with the idea to start a community radio station in Malamulele so that talented young people in their community could get an opportunity to prove themselves. “Community radio is where young and aspiring people can start a career in radio production. We are a young radio station, but we are already growing very quickly, having already accumulated over 15 000 listeners,” he said.

Radio stations join hands to promote African unity

In commemoration of Africa Month, Phalaphala FM will be broadcasting the Devhula Havhembe show jointly with her sister radio station, Munghana Lonene FM, on Saturday, 27 May, from 15:00 to 18:00.

The show will be presented by veteran presenter Mpho “Jantibuy” Nefale and Happiness Maake from Munghana Lonene FM. The listeners of both radio stations will be given the opportunity to call in to talk about their cultures and other related topics.

Africa Day was commemorated on 25 May, with the provincial celebrations held at the University of Venda.

Phalaphala FM’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, said these two radio stations in particular played a unique role in promoting unity among cultures. “As a public broadcaster, we have a responsibility to promote the values of the African Union (AU), the unity of the African continent, and to build a united nation in Africa. The objective of Africa Month is to achieve greater unity and solidarity among African countries and their people, and to ensure that all Africans are aware of their human rights.”

Thidilweli is making her mark on the radio

She said that, while celebrating Africa Month, everyone should stand against the abuse of women and children, domestic violence, rape, racism, sexism, homophobia, religious intolerance, cyber- and social-media bullying, hate speech, derogatory language, and comments inciting hate speech.

consistently surpass it,” he said.

He feels the local music scene has played a significant role in shaping his artistry, instilling in him a profound pride in his mother tongue, the Tshivenda language. “Legends like Colbert Mukwevho, who fearlessly produced world-class reggae music in his mother tongue, have inspired my own journey,” he said.

Worth V Voculz is committed to utilising his platform for positive change. “My ultimate goal is to deeply touch the hearts of my fans, guiding them on a journey of self-discovery, exploring the depths of love, and fostering intimate and selfless connections. Their unwavering support and understanding encourages me to create impactful music that resonates with their experiences and emotions,” he said.

Constant research and love for one’s work are necessities for a successful science and technology radio presenter, and this is precisely what Makhado FM’s Thidilweli Mukhudi is good at. This girl from the dusty streets of Mafhohoni settlement is gradually making her mark in the broadcasting industry.

Thidilweli was born and raised in Ha-Makhitha, Mukhudi, where she attended Madaheni Combined School. She passed her matric at Phophi High School and went on to study at the University of Venda, where she completed her bachelor of arts in media studies.

Mukhudi (23) presents the Science and Technology Show on Tuesdays, between 14:00 and 15:00, which deals with real-life issues. “I must make sure that I’m fully prepared when I get to

the studio every day. Continuous reading, research and the love for my work contributes to the success of my show,” she said.

Barely three years since joining the radio station, Mukhudi’s popularity has grown tremendously because of her emphasis on promoting her mother tongue – Tshivenda - without compromise. “My show is more informative than entertaining, and I make sure that the language I use is understandable to everyone. When it comes to radio, one must be very careful with language because it is the only way of communication with the listeners.”

Asked about the recipe for her success, Mukhudi was quick to say: “Perseverance, hard work, motivation and effective time management are key. I have always believed that no matter how many shots I have missed, I’m going to make the next one,” she said.

Mukhudi believes that her job as radio presenter was her calling.

“There is nothing that soothes my soul more than radio. Radio is everything to me and I cannot live without it. When I am in the studio, I forget about everything else, because I find myself in another world, different from this one that everyone lives in. There is nothing better than doing what you love.”

Ravele said they wanted South Africans to remember that access to information was one of their basic human rights. She said the industry should be aware of its role to empower people out there, to educate and to inform them. “In terms of technology, we have grown by leaps and bounds. I believe that radio still has a crucial role to play as main source of information for millions, even to those who live on the outskirts. We need to be a source of news and current affairs for the people,” she said.

Communities trained to fight fire

Working on Fire, in conjunction with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment and Vhamusanda Vho-Livhuwani Matsila has been busy over the last week with firefighting campaigns to make the Matsila communities aware of the effects of fires, and how to control them. These campaigns started on 15 May.

Shoprite goes green and wants to generate 25% of own electricity

Load shedding may have many negative consequences, but it has had one positive outcome – it has boosted the drive to implement greener and more sustainable energy sources. In Louis Trichardt, the major shopping centres have also adapted, installing solar panels on large parts of their roofs to supplement the supply of electricity to businesses.

In one of the latest developments, the Shoprite store in Burger Street completed

a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) installation that can generate 409,252 kWh. This will add to the Shoprite Group’s growing network of solar-powered and renewable-electricity installations across South Africa.

Chain stores such as Shoprite are already making a significant contribution to alleviate the country’s power-supply problems. “The group’s current installed capacity of solar PV generates almost 50 million kWh annually, with 174 534 m² of solar panels across 71 sites, the equivalent of 24 soccer fields. This is enough to power 4 554

households for a full year, easing pressure on the national electricity grid,” the group said last week in a statement.

Sanjeev Raghubir, Shoprite’s group sustainability manager, said that renewable energy enabled their stores to reduce their environmental impact, and in some cases allowed them to continue operating during power cuts.

“We aim to power 25% of the group’s operations with renewables in the next five years and to meet our science-based emission-reduction targets, including net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050,” he said.

Speaking during the closing campaign on Friday, 19 May, Working on Fire’s general manager for Limpopo, Mr Tshepo Malatjie, said that parents should share the blame for fires at their homes because they allowed their children to play with matches. He urged smokers to avoid smoking in bed, as falling asleep with a burning cigarette is often the cause of houses’ burning down. He said that bee harvesters were also partly to blame for the rampant veld fires, as the harvesters sometimes ran away when they got stung by bees and abandoned their fires to spread uncontrolled.

“Residents must keep an eye out for Working on Fire’s awareness campaigns, which

will be hosted across the province. These campaigns are aimed at empowering communities on how to be fire safe to prevent unwanted veld and forest fires. We are busy engaging our communities and giving them training in firefighting. We have a positive and healthy working relationship with traditional leaders, who had made many members of the community available for training,” he said.

Mr Rotondwa Baloyi, one of the community members

who received training from the Matsila Community Forum, said they had definitely learnt a lot from the training. “Before, we did not know what to do when fires broke out, but now we can stand on our feet and fight fires. Learning about fire hazards is the key to preventing fires from occurring. We plead with community members to work with us in preventing unwanted fires by continuing to educate their peers and children about the dangers of fire,” he said.

Jehovah’s Witnesses on local campaign

Religion

Jehovah’s Witnesses will be heading to Venda to share Bible-based message with local residents. The special preaching campaign in Venda stretches from 29 May until 10 July this year.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses opened a Venda Translation Office in Louis Trichardt in December 2022. And in 2019, just before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the Bible or New World Translation of the Holy Scripture was released in Venda. “We are thrilled to be going back to Venda again on this exciting preaching campaign. Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide offer a new and free interactive Bible course to all those who are willing, and we felt that it’s befitting for Venda people to get a taste of this exciting message,” said Kobus van der Merwe, local spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses. “This campaign is built around a positive message that is in the Bible, that has the power to change people’s lives for the better, now and forever,” said Kobus.

Witnesses conducted an average of 5.5 million Bible courses around the globe during each month in 2022. In South Africa, almost 70 000 individuals on average agreed to study the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses in the same year. The programme or Bible course offers a practical way to learn what the Bible teaches on a variety of subjects, such as how to find family happiness, why so much evil and suffering exist in the world, and what the Bible promises for the future.

Participating in the interactive Bible course with Jehovah’s Witnesses comes without any obligation. The Witnesses simply present what the Bible teaches and allow each person to determine their own personal beliefs and life choices. Tshiozwi Mates give Black Dragons a 4-0 soccer lesson

Tshiozwi Mates were far too strong for Ravele Black Dragons and brutally beat them 4-0 in their Mathoho Soccer Competition match played at the Tshiozwi Grounds on Sunday.

Dragons managed to match Mates pound for pound in the early minutes, but their fighting spirit vanished with time. Mates could have scored more than a dozen goals, had they managed to convert all their chances.

The game was characterised by rough tackles in the first half.

Mates scored their first goal after Muhangwi Mukosi dished a wellcooked pass to Thabelo Netshiendeulu, who scored after a scramble for the ball within the box. Dragons did not stop fighting, despite conceding an early goal. They created numerous scoring opportunities,

but their strikers let them down by shooting aimlessly from close range.

The half-time score was still 1-0 in favour of Mates.

Mates increased the margin in the 68th minute when Mushoni Mavhandu found the net after receiving a neat pass from Murendeni Mauvhelwana. Mpho Netshiendeulu received a loose ball from the left corner and beat the Dragons keeper, Takalani Buasi, with a ground cutter to score the third goal. Muano Mutandari scored his team’s fourth goal by sending the keeper the wrong way with a close-range half volley after he had managed to beat the off-side trap.

Dragons were awarded a free kick closed to the penalty area after Brighton Sebola executed a rough tackle on Shudufhadzo Phaswana. Tendamudzimu Mamphaga, however, shot straight into the hands of the keeper, Rembuluwani Munengiwa. Thato

proceeded to the semi-final of the Mathoho Competition when they beat Tshikota Chelsea FC 5- 2 on Sunday at the Tshiozwi Grounds. The winners were determined by a penalty shoot-out as the two teams played to a 1-all draw in regulation time.

Both sides played attacking football in the first half, making the match entertaining to watch. Chelsea did not lose their fighting spirit, although two of their key players, Tshepiso Masia and Livhuwani Makushu, were cautioned with yellow cards early in the match.

The wheel of fortune turned against Chelsea in the 37th minute. Their defender, Oscar Makhado, failed to stop the ball, and Khuliso

Mulaudzi of Greenway scored easily. Chelsea should have equalised, but they missed a golden opportunity when their dribbling wizard, Tshililo Moshapo, forced his way through from the far left corner but shot wide.

Greenway were led by their midfield linkman, Rendani Mbedzi. They raided the Chelsea danger area continuously, but Lady Luck was not on their side. They tried to walk the ball into the net, but the Chelsea defence was rock solid.

The equaliser for Chelsea was scored by Kudzi Muhawa, who received a well-timed pass from Etienne Mageza. After the goal, Chelsea regrouped and started to dictate terms. The referee, Mr Ndifelani Mathabwe, issued a red card to Livhuwani Makushu of Chelsea for a second bookable offence.

The Zoutpansberg Powerline FC U/13 team (photo) literally did not have to sweat to win their match against Gogobole Madrid FC on Saturday. Gogobole failed to arrive at the venue on time and lost the points. This was one of the matches that took place under the banner of the KFC U/13 Development Soccer League. Other results of the day were: Madombidzha Congo XI beat Maita Zwitoma FC 2-1, Madombidzha Chris United lost 1-2 against Hollywoodbets Mabaleng Development and Tshiozwi Dynamos FC and Gogobole Bucs played to a 2-2 draw. Mubva All Stars vs Mighty Green

Mubva All Stars were just a bit too strong for Magau Might Green, whom they beat 2-1 in their Mathoho Soccer Competition match played at the Tshiozwi Grounds on Sunday.

Stars took the game to their opponents from the onset, but their original fighting spirit faded as the game progressed. Luckily, they were two goals ahead when they lost cohesion in the middle of the park. They scored their opening goal in the 19th minute when Lavhelesani Netshituni found the net, following a brilliant pass from Ndamulelo Mavhungu. Mavhungu dribbled past two Mighty Green defenders in a row and, instead of unleashing from the edge of the box, he chose to share his fortune with Netshituni, who was in the perfect scoring position. Netshituni’s goal injected more life into the whole team.

Stars regrouped from behind, creating some promising moves as they approached the opposition’s half. Their efforts did not pass without reward as they scored their second goal in the 44th minute. Dicken Musenwa was on target with a half volley to bring the halftime score to 2-0.

Stars replaced Innocent Mudau with Ndidzulafhi Mulaudzi early in the second half. Mighty Green responded by introducing Pfunzo Mashakwe and Vusani Malima for Unarine Mphaga and Ndivho Khangale respectively.

Mighty Green pulled one back in the 70th minute. Mpho Mulaudzi gave the ball the final touch after a scramble within the penalty box.

With great sadness the Chambers Attorneys family in Louis Trichardt had to say goodbye to their beloved Marvin Ramuhashi (photo) who passed away on Tuesday, 16 May, at the age of 41. “Marvin worked at the firm for 10 years. We will always remember his great smile, humble heart, who lived to serve our clients. Marvin, you leave behind beautiful memories. You will be greatly missed and forever be in our hearts. Thank you for the life we shared. You’ve touched so many lives. It’s so hard to say goodbye,” said Ms. Stephné Chambers of Chambers Attorneys. Photo supplied.

Musangwe fighters gather to honour Phillip ‘The Time Bomb’ Ndou

More than 50 bare-knuckle fighters converged at Tshifudi village on Saturday (20th) to honour one of the very best boxing icons to have ever been produced in this country, Phillip “The Time Bomb” Ndou. They were not disappointed as the legend himself made an appearance at the tournament.

Ndou was born and bred in the former Venda homeland, at a village called Mbahe, and is a product of the Vhavenda traditional boxing sport called Musangwe. Unlike most African fighters, his professional debut was overseas, in Widnes, Britain, where he floored his

opponent, Nigel Leake, with a vicious left-hook, right-uppercut combination.

Early in his career, his manager/trainer, the late Nick Durandt, took him far and wide, letting him fight in different countries to build his confidence and knock out even more opponents.

Ndou is a seven-time former South African National featherweight champion (1990 to 1996). He also won the WBA Inter-Continental featherweight championship, the WBC International Super featherweight championship and the WBU Super featherweight championship. He first made national headlines when he won the South African National Featherweight championship in 1998

in a match against Jacky “The Pressure Cooker” Gunguluza from the Eastern Cape. This was followed by his fightof-the-year-battle with Cassius Baloyi at Carnival City in Brakpan in 2001, and his most famous fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2003.

After the tournament on Saturday, Ndou said he was trying to find a place to open a boxing gym in the Vhembe region to train youngsters. “There are many young and talented boxers in this area. I have already spotted Cena Nephalama during a Musangwe tournament, and today he is a professional boxer.”

Ndou said a lot of hard work was needed to become successful in boxing. “Boxing is a very dangerous sport for lazy people.

Here you have to train at least six days a week and be ready to fight at any given time.”

giving to the needy gives me peaceful sleep. Besides the kit and tracksuits, I have decided to help them with water and juice during practice, and to cover their travelling needs to games,” he said.

Ravies too strong for Happy Boys

Ravies FC were by far too strong for Miluwani Happy Boys, whom they beat 3-0 in their Safa Vhembe Regional League match played at the Miluwani Grounds on Sunday afternoon.

The game was characterised by dangerous tackles. The referee did not allow any of the culprits to go unpunished. He flashed five yellow cards in the game. Some of the players who were booked for different infringements include Lehlohonolo Mulaudzi and Nkhume-

leni Mmbara from Ravies and Enos Manganyi of Happy Boys.

The visitors from Maniini village claimed the lead in the 24th minute. The team’s captain, Rotondwa Nkhumeleni, beat the keeper with a neat header after a scramble within the box.

Ravies’ keeper, Phathutshedzo Maguvhe, was more of a spectator for the better part of the game. His defenders did not want to see any stranger within their danger zone.

Ravies increased the margin nine minutes before the end of the first half. They were award-

ed a free kick in the 30-metre area. Oscar Mboneni tried his luck with a half volley from the free kick. The keeper of Happy Boys, Thina Mudau, misjudged the flight of the ball and suffered the pain of watching it go beyond his reach.

Ravies put matters beyond doubt when they scored the third goal via Oscar Mboneni later in the game.

Ravies’ victory helped them to finish their league programme in the eighth spot on the log standings with 36 points.

Two for Joy Ladies and Lacoste

Morning Stars in a Vhembe derby

The battle for promotion and to escape the relegation axe at the end of the season will continue among the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the Sasol Women’s League this weekend. All eyes will be in the Vhembe derby between Two for Joy Ladies FC and Lacoste Morning Stars, which will be played at the Tshirenzheni Grounds in the Nzhelele Valley on Saturday afternoon.

Apart from the fact that sparks normally fly in derby games, this one is expected to be an extraordinary derby.

Two for Joy and Morning Stars are in the race for the league championship. Two for Joy are currently leading the pack with 21 points, while Morning Stars are in the fourth place, six points behind the leaders.

Two for Joy and Morning Stars are sharpened to kill after winning their matches last weekend. Not only did Two for Joy deposit the maximum points into their league account last weekend, but they had registered a historic victory as well. They walloped Merwe United Ladies 7-0 at the Merwe grounds outside Malamulele. At the same time, Morning

Stars crushed Masakona Liberty Experience 5-1.

Rodadau FC will host Real Mighty Ladies at the Tshitungulwane Grounds outside Vuwani. The defenders of Mighty Girls will have a tough time against the strikers of Rodadau in Londani Negota, Lethabo Sello and Shonisani Mafela.

Masakona Liberty Experience will play their second match away from home in a row. They will travel to Tshandama village, where they will play against Tshandama Young

Stars at the Tshandama Makhithani Grounds.

Sealene Ladies and Phomolong Ladies will fight for league points in their Phalaborwa derby at the Lulekani Stadium in Phalaborwa. The other fixtures are Sisters FC vs Merwe United Ladies, Ramatlaohle Ladies vs University of Limpopo, Marumo Gallants vs Seven Stars Ladies, Mandebele Happy Fighters Ladies vs Kanatla Ladies and Schoonoord Chiefs Ladies vs FC Stars United Ladies.

The Hollywoodbets Women’s Development Soccer League’s pre-cup competition was launched on Saturday (20 May). The competition serves as preparation for the teams’ competing in the prestigious women’s league. The pre-cup tournament will take place at Mabaleng Sports Grounds on 27 and 28 May. The teams that will be participating are: Madombidzha Gunners, CS Fighters, Hollywoodbets Mabaleng Development, Mubva All Stars, Daniel Mubva FC, Midoroni United, Tshikwarani Rainbow Academy and Makhitha IYA Runga. The event is organised by Mamu Community Development. In the photo, from left to right, are Rhulani Maphengo, Amukelani Vukea, Fhulufhelo Nndwamato, Matamela Lavhelesani, Gumi Unarine and Mpho Mavhandu. Photo supplied.

Draw for Blue Birds and Brothers

In their Safa Vhembe Regional League match that was played at the Itsani Grounds on Saturday, Dzwerani United Brothers managed to rise to the occasion and held Manamani Blue Birds to a goalless draw.

United Brothers wasted no time and took the game to the home side from the first minute. Their right winger, Olugaho “Pelembe” Mudau, was more than a handful for the defenders of Blue Birds. Mudau was everywhere, assisting in the distribution of dangerous balls from the middle of the park while playing as a full striker at the same time.

Only nine minutes into the game, Mudau realised that Saturday was not his day. He received a neat pass from Pfadzani Maladzhi in the 20-metre area and tried his luck with a half volley. The ball went a little wide, much to the disappointment of the team’s enthusiastic supporters.

The Tshakhuma-based referee, Mr Lloyd Mafuma, flashed the first yellow card after 25 minutes. The keeper of

United Brothers, Khumbudzo Mukwevho, was reprimanded for wasting time.

The home side regrouped from behind towards the end of the first half. They came close to scoring when Tshifhiwa Makhado miskicked the ball just outside the goal line.

The last half was also characterised by wasted scoring op-

portunities. Both sides effected three changes in the last stanza, but the moves did not affect the outcome of the game.

The result of the game means that Blue Birds have concluded their league programme in the third position with 48 points, 10 behind the log leaders, Univen FC.

More Safa Vhembe clubs fined for abandoning their league games

The disciplinary committee of the Safa Vhembe Regional League has once again imposed heavy fines on several clubs during its sitting at the league’s offices the past weekend.

Musina All Stars were found guilty of causing the abandonment of their game against Madimbo Royal Eagles. The committee heard that the referee officiating in the game had awarded a penalty to Royal Eagles. The players and officials

Another tricky hurdle is waiting for Maindis Ladies

The Hollywoodbets Super League teams will play the last of their first-round league matches this weekend. Seven matches will be played at different places countrywide on Saturday afternoon, while only one fixture is scheduled for Sunday.

With things moving from bad to worse in their camp, whether Maindis Ladies will manage to make a comeback and collect the full points at stake when they meet

TUT FC at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday remains to be seen. Maindis once again resembled a punching bag in their game against University of Pretoria FC, to whom they lost 0-7 at the Absa Tuks Stadium in Pretoria last Saturday.

Although time is fast running out for them, the chairman of Maindis Ladies, Mr Falaza Mdaka, is adamant that his side will manage to collect enough points in their remaining fixtures and restore the team’s lost pride. He said that they would register a number of experienced players when the registra-

tion window opened. He appealed to the team’s supporters to be patient. Mdaka also warned TUT FC not to underestimate them simply because they were rooted at the bottom of the log standings with 6 points.

The other Limpopo-based side, First Touch Academy, will host University of Pretoria FC at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane. The newcomers, Copper Belts FC, will entertain TS Galaxy Queens at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Durban Ladies will host UWC at the Princess Magogo

Stadium in Durban. Durban

Ladies are still in a joyous mood after beating Coal City Wizards 4-2 at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Emalahleni last Saturday.

City Lads will fight for league points against Coal City Wizards at the Mahikeng Stadium in the North West. The only fixture scheduled for Sunday will be between Richmond United and Royal AM at the Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley. The other fixtures are JVW FC vs University of Johannesburg FC and Thunderbirds Ladies vs Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.

of All Stars refused that the penalty be taken and the game was finally abandoned. A fine of R4 000 was imposed on them. The points for the match were awarded to Madimbo Royal Eagles. Bale United had arrived late for their match against Maramanzhi Pull Together. They were found guilty as charged. The committee ordered the club to pay a fine of R3 000 within 30 days. They also forfeited the points.

Manamani Blue Birds were found guilty of causing the abandonment of their league game against Shayandima Dynamos FC. In their match report, Manamani Blue Birds cited darkness as their reason to refuse to continue with the game. They argued that the ball was no longer visible and continuing with the game was no longer safe. Both the match officials and the officials from Dynamos testified that what the officials of Blue Birds were saying was untrue. The points for the match were awarded to Shayandima Dynamos. Manamani Blue Birds’ attempt to have their league match against Shayandima Dynamos replayed was unsuccessful.

Tshakhuma Blue Birds have reason to rejoice after the committee members dismissed the protest that Tshakhuma RO United had lodged against them. The committee found that the protest had not been lodged properly.

The protest that Kwena FC had lodged in their game against Kalahari Stars was also dismissed on the basis that the proper channels were not followed when it was lodged.

Who will go and who will stay at VFA?

As part of their strategy to try and assemble a formidable squad for next season, Venda Football Academy (VFA) will release some of the players who were part of their squad this season. According to the chairman of the club, Mr Itani Munzhelele, the final list of the players whose employment contracts will be extended will be submitted to him on Friday.

Vhanzheli, as he is commonly

known, said that the technical team was busy working on the list. He said that he had given the technical team until Friday morning to finalise the list. The decision to acquire the services of more players will be taken after they have received the list of players who will not be part of their squad next season.

Asked about the changes they were intending to make to the technical staff of the team, Mr Munzhelele said that they had not yet taken a decision in that regard.

He said that Mr Joel “The Prophet” Masutha was still in charge of the team for now. He further revealed that negotiations were ongoing with Mr Masutha regarding the possibility to extend his stay with the club and that the two parties had not yet found each other.

Mr Munzhelele said that although Mr Masutha’s track record at VFA was impressive, that his employment contract with the club would be extended was not a given. VFA were fighting for survival

Lacoste Morning Stars shine brightly over Masakona Liberty Experience

Lacoste Morning Stars kept their title hopes alive when they brutally crushed Masakona Liberty Experience 5-1 in their Sasol Women’s League match that was played at the Shayandima School Grounds on Sunday afternoon.

Liberty Experience played the better part of the first half with 10 players. Their other players only arrived at the grounds towards the end of the first half. Morning Stars failed to capitalise on the setback as the visitors still managed to match them pound for pound in all departments.

The home side only managed to open their account in the 14th minute. The goal followed

after a defender of Liberty Experience fumbled while clearing the ball. Zwavhudi Manavhela, who was waiting in the prefect scoring position, was on target with a close-range ground cutter.

Liberty Experience did not give in without a fight. They launched numerous attacks from the middle of the park. Their only goal came in the 39th minute. They were awarded a free kick in the 25-metre area. Kgothatso Munyai beat the keeper with a half volley from the free kick to bring the half-time score to 1-1.

Liberty Experience were down and out in the last half, despite the fact that they tried to solidify their striking force by introducing Mpilo Chauke after the arrival of the other team members towards the end

of the first half.

The home side reclaimed the lead seven minutes into the last half. Their playmaker, Shumani Tshikosi, blasted in a rocket after a scramble within the box. Realising that they would have difficulty finding the equalizing goal, Liberty Experience then decided to abandon their positions and packed themselves at the far back and relied on counter-attacks. They were severely punished for that. Morning Stars scored two more goals via Gumani Mulibana and Asiashu Mudau in the 58th and 64th minute respectively. Zwavhudi Manavhela was on target again later in the game.

Morning Stars are lying in the fourth position on the log standings with 15 points, six behind the pace setters, Two for Joy Ladies FC.

when Masutha took over as the head coach of the team about three months ago. The team’s fortunes had changed dramatically after Mr Masutha’s appointment to the team’s hot seat.

VFA completed their league programme in the 11th position with 38 points. The players are currently on a six-week break to be with their families, and the team will resume their normal training sessions in the last week of June.
