Haar man antwoord: “Sy fabriseer haar eie ongelukkigheid.” So ‘n begin sal baie vir jou beteken. Ds. Johan Marais (Louis Trichardt Baptistekerk)

The Makhado Local Council has at last made appoint ments in senior positions at the municipality. The ap pointments are long overdue as some departments had to function without senior man agers since 2018. During a special council meeting on Tuesday afternoon, the announcement was made that the acting municipal manager (MM), Mr Kent Nem aname, had been appointed in a more permanent capacity. Nemaname, who was previous ly appointed as the munici pality’s chief financial officer (CFO), acted in this position since the resignation of the late Mr Freddy Tshivhengwa in December 2020. With Nemaname now being appointed as MM, the position of CFO becomes vacant. Mr Godfrey Raliphada, who has been acting as CFO, will con tinue to do so until the vacancy is filled.Thenew director of corpo rate services is Mr SD Maguga. He was acting in this position before his appointment. Mr A Mabunda was appointed as the new director of development planning while Ms DG Siboiboi was appointed as the director of technical services. Mr HJ Lukheli, who previously acted in this position, was appoint ed as director of community services.Thenew municipal manag er and the directors will start working on 1 September. ICR councillor Dan Singo said that as an opposition party they were glad to see that the vacant posts had at last been filled. He said that they were going to monitor the work de livered by the directors and the municipal manager. He accused the municipality of abusing taxpayers’ money by not filling these senior positions for such a long period of time.

By Andries van Zyl Residents of Louis Trichardt learnt with great sadness of the sudden death of well-known local businessman Mr Alan Bird on 26 August after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was 72 years old. “He did not know he had it and he didn’t expect it either,” said wife Jessie. She said Alan started feeling sick in July. When things became really bad, a biopsy was done and on 12 August, lung cancer was diagnosed. He passed away 14 daysArthurlater.Alan Bird was born on 10 February 1950 in Port Elizabeth. Soon afterwards, his family moved to Bulawayo in the then Rhode sia, where he completed his schooling at Hugh Beatle Primary School and after that at Northlea High School. After school, Alan completed his military service, worked at the Bulawayo Power Station and later moving to work with the Mobil Oil company at Fort Victoria.

Foto verskaf.

On 25 March 1972, Alan married Jessie, the love of his life. Shortly after that, in 1973, Alan started his own engineering shop with his father, effectively working two jobs to get ahead by running the engineering shop after hours. This went on for about two years, until he left Mobil and in 1975, he opened Transform retail shop with partners in Bulawayo and continued with the engineering shop. In 1980, Alan bough a smallholding just out side of Louis Trichardt, where he started farming with chickens and doing contract work for the Shell Oil Company. He sold his shares in Trans form (Bulawayo) and in 1985 started Transform in Louis Trichardt. He also sold his smallholding and purchased a farm near Bandelierkop and started going into game and cattle farming. He expanded his game farming by buying the Balla-Balla conservancy next to the Hendrik Verwoerd Tunnels. In 1996, he also expanded his game farming to Zambia, where he purchased a farm. The farm at Bandelierkop was lost to a land claim in 2006. In 2007, he bought a second game farm in Zambia. Alan retired from the Transform family busi ness in 2016 and loved spending time with his animals and in the bush. He was a keen fisher man and golfer and enjoyed the outdoors. “He was a hard, strict and wanted everything done his way,” said Jessie. “He wanted things done right … He has taught me so many things. To work hard as nothing comes easy. Do every thing yourself and don’t get other people to do it, that was his motto,” added son Alan (junior). “He was a man of action, a leader. He always showed people how to do things, working with them and not expecting them to do the work. He had many talents, a hands-on man and could do anything. He was a tough man, but had a soft heart. He was always quick to forgive things. He was always willing to help and was one of the hardest workers I know,” said son Shawn. A memorial service for the late Alan Bird will be held at the Methodist Church in Louis Trichardt at 10:00 on Friday, 2 September. He is survived by his wife Jessie, children Dene, Carol, Alan and Shawn, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.Thefamilyaskedthat, instead of flowers, people wanting to expressed their condolences should rather make a donation to the Makhado Care Group. They thanked the care group for their support of Alan while he was sick, as well as Dr Anton Stroebel and the staff of the Zout pansberg Private Hospital. Jessie also thanked sons Alan (junior) and Shawn for supporting her and helping with their dad in his final days. Re garding this, thanks also went to Jaydee Botha, Alan junior’s business partner. Aslam Akoo.

Well-known Alan Bird loses brief battle with lung cancer

Cross-border truck driver Joseph Masinire from Zimbabwe said the new road would ease congestion between Musina and the Beitbridge Border Post and save travel time. “We used to experience traffic congestion as a result of the many trucks travelling to and from the border post. This caused heavy delays, which became worse during Easter, the festive season and on long weekends,” he said.

Eric Louw High School is extremely proud of seven if its Grade 12 learners and four Grade 9 learners who were invited to attend the recent Top Achiever Lunch with Dr Sampie Phaswana, circuit manager of the Education Department’s Soutpansberg North Circuit. These learners were amongst the Top 20 in the circuit, which is a huge achievement! The Louwtjie Grade 12s fill six of the first 10 positions, with Marissa de Coning claiming first position, not only in the circuit, but also in the district. Pictured from left to right are the Grade 12 learners Thanyani Munotha, Charles Maphaha, Marissa (94,4%), Dr Phaswana, Sindiswa Mulondo, Lu-Ann Nel, Marzel Breytenbach and Hendré Steenkamp. The inset photos, from left to right, are of Grade 9 learners Buhle and Thando Ndiwini, Thato Tlou and Jessica Malungane. Photos supplied.

Musina business leader Mosses Matshivha said the new road would reduce dust blown up by traffic, which created health hazards for residents. He said it would also save travel time for road users and reduce vehicle operating costs. “This road will improve the quality of life for Musina residents, while improving economic activity and helping economic recovery in the far north of the country. Our businesses will do well because heavy-duty vehicles are no longer sharing the narrow roads with local road users and pedestrians. Heavy vehicles passing through the Musina CBD were posing a danger to pedestrians and were overshadowing our premises,” saidKaizerMatshivha.Phiri, chairperson of the Musina Nancefield Taxi Association, said taxi operators gave credit to SANRAL for designing a “classy road“Musinanetwork”.isnow looking like Gauteng and Durban when it comes to road infrastructure,” said“ThePhiri.opening of this road also comes as a huge relief to us as taxi operators, pedestrians and all road users in the area. People around Musina are excited to see the new road as it alleviates congestion in the CBD,” Phiri said. Titus Madamalala, vice chairperson of the Mus-Shuttle Taxi Association, said customers were over the moon that metered taxis were operating on a state-of-the-art road network, which was a catalyst for socio-economic development.Musina Local Municipality Mayor Godfrey Mawela was excited about the job opportunities that the project brought to the town and was thankful to SANRAL for its investment in SMMEs and local labour. (Article: SANRAL)

Construction of the new Musina Ring Road, set to be officially opened by National Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula on Thursday, 1 September, was a financial boon to the tune of millions for residents and small- and medium-sized businesses in the town. The R640-million South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) project provided much-needed work opportunities for a number of locals and Musina SMMEs. The Musina Ring Road, which diverts the N1’s traffic around the border town, is currently open to traffic, much to the relief of motorists, business leaders and taxi organisations.OwenSimba, site manager at local business Makali Construction, said: “My construction company built the bridges and the culverts at an investment of R114-million. We created jobs for 12 skilled labourers as well as 23 local general workers. As the project progressed, we added more people. SANRAL is committed to creating equitable access for small contractors, particularly black-owned enterprises, through its procurement processes.” Hennie Kotze, project engineer for SANRAL’s Northern Region, said the new road brought much-needed relief to roads in Musina’s central business district, where trucks travel to and from the Beitbridge border post, the gateway to many Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries that trade with South Africa. Before the ring road, more than 1 000 heavy-duty vehicles and trucks used the N1 daily, passing through the Musina CBD and causing significant damage to the road infrastructure in the town. Intersections and lower speed restrictions created heavy traffic congestion - and heavy passing traffic resulted in acrimony with locals.

MC Mining looks at alternative development scenarios

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 2 SEPTEMBER 2022 5

Greater Soutpansberg Projects

As for the company’s other Limpopo explora tion assets, MC Mining has interests in various exploration assets in the Limpopo Province, including the three project areas comprising the GSP, namely Chapudi, Generaal and Mopane. These are all longer-term development oppor tunities, and the company is in the process of re-assessing the carrying values of these projects, given their longer-term development horizons and the current focus on other projects. “MC Mining has made very pleasing prog ress during the last four months. This includes securing the standby loan facility that ensured the company had sufficient liquidity while it built up inventory prior to accessing interna tional thermal coal markets. This has been achieved by reaping the benefit of coal prices which remain favourable due to geopolitical events and the global energy shortage,” said Mr Godfrey Gomwe, MC Mining’s managing director and CEO. He added: “The company has also enhanced the Makhado Bankable Feasibility Study, ensuring we have assessed opportunities to maximise the project’s economic returns. Once developed, Makhado is expected to be South Africa’s pre-eminent coking-coal mine and would replace a significant amount of im ported hard-coking coal. MC Mining continues to explore potential marketing strategies for Makhado’s coal, while the composite funding package for the development of the Project is being concluded. We are planning to commence with certain early-works activities at Makha do later in CY2022 and, funding dependent, construction is planned to commence in early CY2023.” (Information supplied by MC Mining)

Vele Colliery Regarding Vele, this coal resource comprises both semi-soft coking coal (SSCC) and ex port-quality thermal coal. However, Vele’s CPP does not have the requisite fines circuits that would allow for the simultaneous production of SSCC and thermal coal. The company has previ ously reported that, due to the global economic downturn and lower coal prices, the colliery was placed on care and maintenance from August 2013.The option of building a CPP at Makhado has resulted in the assessment of potential alterna tive exploitative scenarios for the Vele Colliery. The previously envisaged phased approach to the development of Makhado Project would have resulted in the processing of Makhado’s crushed and screened coal at the Vele CPP, which would have required modifications to the Vele CPP of approximately R397 million. The improved mar ket conditions and construction of a new CPP at Makhado creates optionality for the potential recommencement of operations at Vele. Options being evaluated include the possible outsourcing of operations at the colliery, and MC Mining is currently assessing potential partnerships in this regard. Any Vele development model that includes elements of outsourcing will reduce the start-up working capital funding and prioritise resources on the development of the flagship Makhado Project, which remains the priority for the company.

Mining news MC Mining provided an update for its activ ities this week, which include their Lim popo-based projects, namely the Makhado hard-coking coal project (Makhado Project), Vele Colliery (Vele) and Greater Soutpans berg Projects (GSP). Makhado Project MC Mining announced the completion of the Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS) for its fully licenced, shovel-ready (subject to further funding) Makhado Project, on 13 April this year.

The BFS was prepared by Minxcon, an inde pendent mining industry consulting firm and is a key milestone in securing the funding for the Makhado Project. Seeking to unlock near-term shareholder value, the ‘Base Case’ development plan in the BFS was designed to minimise the upfront capital expenditure by utilising the existing Vele Colliery infrastructure as this mine currently remains on care and maintenance. The BFS is supported by a JORC-compliant (an Australian best-practice code) coal resource of 296 million mineable tonnes in situ (MTIS). The BFS assessed the mining of 3.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of run-of-mine (ROM) coal from the Makhado West Pit. This coal was planned to be crushed and screened at Makhado and the resulting 2.0 Mtpa of -31.5mm coal transported 134km to the modified Vele Colliery coal-processing plant (CPP) for pro cessing. The Vele plant would yield an average of 0.5Mtpa of a mid-volatile hard-coking coal (HCC) for sale domestically and internation ally, and 0.6Mtpa of a 5,500kcal thermal coal by-product. The saleable coal would need to be transported 55km to the Musina railway siding for sale to customers. Apart from the 296 MTIS in the Measured and Indicated categories, other salient features of the Makhado Project include the coal reserves of 69.3 million tonnes (Mt) in the Proved and Probable categories and overall stripping ratio over the life of mine (LOM) of 22 years of 2.48:1.0 (bank cubic metres of waste: tonne of coal). 25.6Mt of saleable coal will be produced over the LOM, comprising 13.7Mt of HCC and 11.9Mt of 5,500kcal thermal coal. The possi bility of outsourcing of mining and processing operations and the creation of an estimated 650 permanent employment positions also exists. The Base Case BFS produced favourable fi nancial results. Following the BFS, Minxcon was commissioned to assess potential alternative de velopment scenarios for Makhado. This assess ment was completed with a view to optimising capex and reduce operational costs at Makhado, including possibly moving the Vele CPP and modifying this at Makhado; or the construction of a bespoke CPP at Makhado. Both additional development scenarios were developed to pre-feasibility level and would result in the mining of the East Pit, followed by the Central and West Pits and the hauling of saleable coal only 72km from Makhado to the Musina siding. These two scenarios would require additional capital expenditure but would significantly reduce the transport costs when compared to the Base Case scenario. Both of the alternative scenarios result in a significant value improvement to Makhado com pared to the Base Case, with increased NPV (net present value) and IRR (internal rate of return) values. This is primarily due to reduced trans portation costs over the LOM, which improves operational margins and generates long-term value for shareholders. Whilst the peak funding requirements for both scenarios are higher, the payback periods are slightly shorter due to the lower operating costs. The option of moving the Vele CPP provides the most attractive financial metrics but removes the Vele asset from MC Mining’s portfolio and limits future exploitation of the Vele Colliery. The construction of a new plant at Makhado provides similar results but requires additional peak funding of ZAR145m while also keeping the Vele CPP intact for future exploitation. The increased peak funding requirement for both scenarios resulted in Minxcon’s assessing the option of reducing the Makhado peak funding requirements through a build, own, operate, transfer (BOOT) arrangement. As a result of this pre-feasibility exercise, MC Mining has initiated discussions with potential BOOT funding providers. The company has also approached potential service providers to complete the detailed study work that will allow for a full-process plant design specifically for the Makhado CPP to be undertaken. Minxcon con firmed that this engineering design work could potentially materially reduce capital costs and consequently, the peak funding requirement. MC Mining is also progressing discussions with potential debt and equity providers and expects to conclude these arrangements in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Zachary is often referred to as the local Bear Grylls. When it comes to the outdoors, there is very little he does not know. His insatiable thirst for adventure has taken the 39-year-old geologist on some of the world’s most dangerous wilderness trails. It is said that he once disappeared along the infamous West Coast Trail in British Columbia. When he reappeared 14 days later, he had a nasty scar on his left shoulder and a haunted look in his eyes.

Lee (28) was born with a neurological disorder that inhibits the full use of her right leg and arm. She has, however, never allowed this inability to become a disability, living her life to the fullest and constantly challenging her body. Although physically strong, every now and then she shows signs of emotional weakness. She is not keen to talk about it, but something or someone has definitely left a scar. will start Fridays at 13:00, until such time as the competition ends. Once an entry has been received, that entry stays “live”. When a weekly winner gets selected, the character chosen in the winning entry becomes dormant, meaning that all other entries featuring the same character, will then be *redundant.Ifthewinning entry does not feature your chosen character, the entry will be considered along with all the new ones received, the following week. * All entries must be emailed to: story@zoutnet.co.za. * Every entry must contain the following information: Name - Address - Phone number - Confirmation that the story is the original work of the person entering for the competition and that the Zoutpansberger may use it for purposes of this -competition.Iftheperson entering is younger than 18, a short letter from a parent or guardian stating that the work is original and may be used for the purpose of this competition must be provided. How to enter patients. Although she has never done a hiking trail, she enjoys taking long walks in her spare time.

Takalani (Taki) (25) For the full-of-life Takalani, nursing has always been her calling. She is a vibrant, energetic young lady who’s infectious laugh can make any bad situation feel a little bit brighter. She is loved by all her collegues and Gerrit (55) comes from a military background. As a young boy, his father (also ‘n military man) shaped him into becoming a soldier. Tigers don’t cry and love is but a four-letter word. Rising to the rank of captain, he was one of the last members of the old South African Army to have seen the horrors of the Bush War on the Angolan border. With the new 1994 dispensation, he found himself on civvy street in a world he did not understand and nor did the world understand him. He never found love, although so desperately longing for it. He is constantly running away from something to somewhere, thus finding himself in the Soutpansberg. Maybe here he can find peace.

Anke tackles a difficult subject to win the weekly prize, but the bar moves up

Gerard is a Dutch adventure tourist. He ticks most of the boxes as far as stereotyping is concerned. He is slightly impatient and not discreet at all. He retired from the university where he was teaching a year ago and now at the age of 66 he spends his time travelling the world.

Lisa (53) is the mother of two grown daughters and wife of the CEO of a successful Sandton-based Import/Export company. Since his work often takes him away on extended business trips abroad and both her daughters had left the nest, Lisa has taken up hiking and bird watching to fill her days and get out of the empty house. She frequently visits nature reserves and national parks around South Africa.

He says he has travelled all over the world, but specifically likes the cold Russian climate. His most enjoyable travel experience was an epic snowmobile Journey in the Ural Mountains.

It was a difficult week for the judges in our writers’ competition. When the competition started the judges only had to read through a couple of stories. In the past two weeks more than a dozen stories arrived and all of the entries were really good. This week’s winner is 16-year-old Anke Roos. This is Anke’s second win in the competition. She also wrote Gerard’s story. What is delightful to see is that our writers do not shy away from difficult topics. In Anke’s case she brings religion into her story and then “confronts” that with a suicide. Her story is about the scars in other people that we may try to heal, but not always successfully. It’s not just about the pain that physical scars cause. But Anke should know that the bar is now even higher. A previous winner, Zwothe Thotori also entered some very imaginative stories and then we had a bunch of “newcomers”. They include Radzambo Matsila, Ndivho Mukoma and Ronewa Gift Ramulongo. All of them for next week, we have already received entries for the character of Lisa (2), Gerrit (3), Adrian (2) and Rovha (1). For Takalani’s character we still await entries. Our writers have until 13:00 on Friday to be eligible for next week’s prize. For those who do not yet know how the competition works: Every week, R1 000 has been earmarked for the reader who submits the best story. The competition combines a travel story with unrelated individual adventures.Theweekly travel episodes are written by our own staff and these focus on the journey of a group of adventurers who are exploring the Old Salt Trail in the western Soutpansberg. They follow a five-day route, during which they encounter many of the treasures the mountain has to offer. The group of adventurers comprise 11 very diverse fictional travellers. The narrator is a young lady called Marelize. In every week’s edition, she or one of the other hikers talks about the route and what the group members have encountered. Two “scar stories” are featured for every day of the trip. The group members stop at a specific location for lunch and one of the members tells his or her story. The same happens at night, when the group members gather around the campfire. This is also the part where our readers need to contribute. The readers must use their imagination and write a story focusing on one of the characters. The theme of the competition is: “The night of the scars”. The idea is that each story will focus on a “scar” that the characters received somewhere in their lives. These can be physical scars, or they can be emotional scars. Short profiles of the 11 characters are provided. Studying each character and building a story around their characteristics will be crucial. The maximum length of an entry is 1 300 words. Once a character’s story is published, that “entry” is closed. If, for instance, you decided to write about Taki’s adventure and another writer’s story about Taki gets published, you need to move on to another character. Readers are welcome to enter stories on all five remaining characters. The entries will stay “live” until the judges have decided who the winner is regarding a specific character. All the stories as well as the travel adventures are published on our website matter.inandcret)thejudgedofstandweek’sdoescharacterstorytoFriday.berger.co.za/salt_trail.www.zoutpans-Judgingstartsat13:00onaAllentriesreceivedupthatpointwillbejudged.Ifaisenteredaboutaspecificandthatcharacternotfeatureinthenextedition,theentrywilloverandbecomespartthe“pool”ofstoriestobethefollowingweek.Apartfromtheseguidelines,normalrulesapply.The(se-judges’decisionsarefinaltheywillnotmeetanyoneabarlatertodiscusstheNostaffmemberofthe Zoutpansberger or their family members may enter.

This week’s winner is Anke Roos, a 16-year-old Grade 10 learner from the El Baruch Academy in Levubu. She enjoys writing and hopes to become a publisher one day who can influence the world with her unique perspective on life. She was inspired to write by the author of Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins. She hopes to become a graphic designer (apart from becoming a famous author). This is the second story of Anke that wins the weekly prize. She also wrote the story on Gerard.

“And what about her brother?” Emma asked Shabnim.

“I went to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. There I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. But I always loved travelling,” she continued.

Shabnim took one last sip of her hot coffee before standing up. Speaking about scars is never easy, because even a physical scar can reflect pain and emotion. “I had a great childhood. I finished school at the appropriate age, my family went to church, and each of us have an intimate relationship with our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.” “Wait, but aren’t you…?” Adrian interrupted.“Indian?” Shabnim responded. “Yes.” Adrian sat back, but with a perplexed look on his face.

Sarah did not take long to open up to Shabnim. She told her about her father and mother’s drinking problems, and that neither of them had a full-time job. Her mother worked part-time at a restaurant and Sarah had to take responsibility for her seven-year-old brother. One of her biggest challenges was to protect her young brother from her father, who could become very abusive when he was drunk. It was during one such session that Sarah intervened, but the blow meant for her young brother had hit her and knocked her out completely. “She told me that she had planned on running away the next day, along with her brother. They needed to get away from such an abusive environment, but they also had no one to turn to. Somehow, I convinced her to stay, and I told her that she and her brother could come to my house anytime they felt it was necessary,” Shabnim explained, the frown lifting a little. “I made good progress with her. We managed to get an urgent court order, placing the boy temporarily in her custody. She continued studying, and I paid for her brother to go back to school. We even managed to get social services on our side…” She paused for a moment. “It wasn’t until a year later that she started to go under again.” A sadness crept over Shabnim’s face as she explained to the group what happened next. “Sarah could not leave her parents. No matter what the outcome, she felt responsible for them. Guilt consumed her, and she overworked herself to care for them.” In her final year at university, Sarah ended her life. “I don’t know how I could have been so blind!” Shabnim continued, her eyes growing misty. “I always tried to look for signs. It was not only my academic field of expertise, but it was also my passion. Somehow, I had missed all the signs.” It turned out that Sarah was struggling badly to cope with all the responsibilities thrust upon the shoulders of such a young woman. “She put on a great act in front of me for those three years,” Shabnim explained. “I console myself with the fact that we had had many long discussions during that period. We talked about life, its meaning, and the importance of faith. I believe she is with Christ, no matter how her life ended,” Shabnim remarked while wiping away a tear running down her cheek. “But I realised that we must never be complacent. Some scars can heal, but some are very deep, and it takes careful observation to see them. I thought I was able to see the scars, but I missed how deep they ran and could do nothing to help with the healing.”

“He graduated from high school last year, and I still love him like a son. I can’t have children, but I love and raised him as my own. The young man is currently traveling abroad on a gap-year exploration. He plans on going to university next year, the one where I work, where he wants to study engineering.”Wipingher hands on her shirt, she sat down, as if her legs could no longer support her. The others looked around uncomfortably, no-one really sure how to react. The silence grew.

“But there was one student who touched my heart like no-one else before or after managed to do.” Now she appeared wistful. Shabnim proceeded to tell them about Sarah, a student who had approached her after class. At first, she did not take much note of the girl. Sarah was one of her top students, but she was very introverted and seldom interacted with her classmates or lecturers.Whenthe student sat down opposite her, she noticed that the girl smelled of smoke. It was the smell of second-hand cigarette smoke – as if someone close to her smoked very heavily - but she could also detect a hint of alcohol mixed in between. Shabnim always tried to be very observant, not only of facial expressions, but also of factors such as the way people dressed, how they walked and even how they smelled. Something about this smell was off! “Sarah then asked me to give her extra classes,” Shabnim said. “I noticed a bruise just in the girl’s hairline, almost invisible if one wasn’t looking carefully at the girl’s soft, delicate face and body.” A frown started to form on Shabnim’s face. “I found it a bit odd that Sarah would need extra classes. She was a top student and did not need to do any catching up. When I asked her about it, she said that she might be going out of town for a week or two, and she was scared that she might fall behind.”Shabnim explained that she noticed that Sarah was speaking in a very soft voice, barely audible to her and definitely not to any of the other students leaving the lecture hall. She realised that something was wrong and asked Sarah to come to her office later that afternoon.

Three hours later, the group settled around the campfire. Dinner was unbelievable, only surpassed by the serenity of the environment. The atmosphere was perfect for another story. Tonight, Shabnim had volunteered to tell the tale of her scar. Information sourced old-salt-trail-description-slackpacker/https://www.ewt.org.za/from:

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 2 SEPTEMBER 2022 9 DAY 4 – Entering Leshiba - One of the gems of the Soutpansberg Lunch at Duluni cave was a welcome break for everyone. The discussion about leopards, however, caused mixed reactions. Every thick bush was viewed with some suspicion, and the trees were scrutinised to check whether a leopard’s tail might be hanging from it, just waiting to leap down on some hapless victim... The group followed the stream up the gorge through more forested area. The route took them past some old stonewall terraces. Edwin explained the significance of the rock faces and hinted at the many stories the terraces would be able to tell. “Do you want to see more of the rock paintings?” Edwin asked. He didn’t even have to wait for an answer as the group members all started walking in the direction he was indicating. The diversion did not, however, take not long as they knew that the camp at Leshiba Mountain Retreats was still a few kilometres away. Once back on the trial, they made their way upstream until they reached the Leshiba fence. Here they had to take off their backpacks and crawl through the “Hiker’s Doggy Door”, a cunning swing gate that ensured that the gate closed behind the hikers. “And now we’re officially on one of the Soutpansberg’s best-known tourism treasures,” Marelize remarked, looking really chuffed. “This is one of the places I’ve always wanted to see. I’ve only read about the 2 500 hectares of unspoilt nature. A place where giraffe, red duikers and mountain reedbuck still roam freely.” “Someone told me that the rare Narina Trogon also visits Leshiba. Will we see some?” Zachary interrupted somewhat excitedly. Edwin found the fact that Zachary was a “birder” who knew what species occurred there somewhat surprising. “We may, depending on your luck,” he responded while giving a shrug. The next couple of kilometres were every hiker’s dream. The gradient was very gentle, and in the distance they saw a warthog and even an inquisitive klipspringer. The route took them through mountain bushveld, silver cluster-leaf woodlands, and an open vleiland, where they spotted a pair of purple-crested loeries. Once past the wetland section, a rocky path led them along the river, up to a little dam in a mountain stream. “Anyone for an afternoon swim?” asked Edwin. “I’m tempted, but there is no way I’m going to dig into my backpack, get out my polka-dot bikini and jump into the cold water. I’ll rather hold out for the showers at the camp,” said Marelize. The laughter that broke out could either be because the rest of the group agreed or because they found the thought of Marelize in a polka-dot bikini in the middle of the bushveld extremely funny. The final stretch of the trail took the group across the Leshiba plains to the front of the lodge. Edwin arranged for a stopover at reception, where they could marvel at the sculpted woodwork of famous local artists. The reception area and restaurant resembled an authentic Venda village, re-created by internationally renowned artist Noria Mabasa. After a quick drink, the hikers made their way along the farm track to Leshiba’s Luvhondo Camp, where the fantastic Leshiba staff were already waiting for them. The group members were swiftly guided to their luxurious huts, complete with hot showers.

The night of the scars on the Old Salt Trail

Shabnim’s story:

By Anke Roos

Shabnim told the group how she continued to study and focus on communication skills. She was fascinated by people, how they interact and how their facial expressions can disclose much more than the words they utter. For her, each trip she took was about more than just learning about the tourism features of her destination - it was an opportunity to study people and find out how they communicate. She had spent a year on Marion Island while doing her doctoral thesis. During the year on the island, she observed and documented how communication patterns change when people are confined in small areas for long periods.

“I realised that the girl’s behaviour was not normal. I would have known if she was smoking or drinking,” Shabnim told her fellow hikers. “But what I didn’t know, was why she smelled like that, and why she was planning on leaving town for a couple of weeks. And why she was bruised on her forehead.” The frown on her face was now full-blown. Later that afternoon, Sarah arrived at her office. All the other students had left, and Sarah and Shabnim were the only two in the room. Shabnim gestured for Sarah to sit and asked her why she was going to be away for a few weeks. While the girl tried to provide an explanation, Shabnim could see Sarah was hiding a lot of emotion behind her calm exterior.

“It’s a common misperception that a country such as India doesn’t have a large Christian community. The fact is that roughly 2,4% of India’s large population describe themselves as Christians, which would be more than 27 million people. But I was born in South Africa, where people love stereotyping,” Shabnim explained, raising her eyebrows sardonically.

082 603 2419 of 015 516 4997 (tydens kantoorure).

Long-distance runner Lutendo Mapoto from Muwaweni finished in the 10th position at this year’s Comrades Marathon. Photo supplied. By Kaizer Nengovhela Vhembe’s own long-distance champion, Lutendo Mapoto from Muwaweni, received a hearty welcome on his return from the Comrades ultra-marathon. Mapoto won a gold medal after he ended in the 10th position on Sunday (28th). This year’s race was a “down run” of approximately 90 km that started at the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg and finished at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Almost 16 000 athletes entered for the gruelling race, which included roughly 2 000 competitors from other countries. Out of these, 11 700 runners completed the race in less than the 12-hour cut-off time. The men’s race was won by South African athlete Tete Dijana, who finished in 05:30:37. Lutendo Mapoto was not far behind, finishing in 05:47:20. He was only 15 seconds behind Charles Tjiane, who ended in ninth place. At the first split, at Lynnfield Park, Mapoto was in third position in a time of just below one hour. He then fell back to 34th position when the runners passed Cato Ridge. Mapoto slowly made his way to the front again and when he passed Winston Park, he was in fourth position with a time to was in 29th position. He finished the final stretch to the finish line in just over 40 minutes to clinch a coveted gold medal. The 34-year-old Mapoto ran his first Comrades Marathon in 2017, ending in the 19th position in 6:00:02. Mapoto was very humble about his achievement, saying that a lot of hard work and experience in other marathons over a long period of time were needed to win. He said that this year’s race, being a down run, had been especially gruelling. “I would have done better, but our late arrival at Pietermaritzburg, due to logistical problems, counted to our disadvantage. All in all I had a good race, having attained 10th position. I was the first from Limpopo to finish the race. I’m happy, very excited. It still feels like I am dreaming. I can’t believe this has happened to me,” he said. The well-known runner Bethuel Netshifhefhe of the Murray & Roberts Running Club said Mapoto deserved the honour, having represented Vhembe and the Limpopo Province so well. “As a club, we are very proud of and happy for him. We hope his achievement also inspires others to work hard, so we can produce more winners from this part of the country,” he Forsaid.a talented full-time athlete such as Mapoto, who regularly participates in different races, things can become very challenging financially. He is still looking for a sponsor to help him cover his travelling expenses and running shoes. Those who would like to help can call him at 071 322 0704.
