R1 billion fix for

The South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL) confirmed on Tuesday that it will spend approximately R1,1 billion to upgrade the N1 north between Louis Trichardt and Musina. This was in response to questions asked by the Zoutpansberger regarding the deplorable state of this road, hailed as the Gateway to Africa.

Over the last couple of weeks, the newspaper has been inundated with complaints about the poor state of the road, specifically regarding potholes. One frequent road user, Mr Jaco Lyon from Mopane, actually went out and counted the number of potholes on a 13-kilometre stretch of the N1 between Bokmakierie and the Riverside Nursery the past month. In total, Lyon counted 583 potholes in this section of the road.

Last week, the Zoutpansberger’s curiosity was triggered by a number of environmental-impact-assessment (EIA) notices about fences and farm gates along this section of road. The notice is for the proposed upgrading of the “SANRAL SOC LTD National Road 1 (N1) Section 29, from Masekwaspoort (Km 27.80) to Musina (Km 70), Limpopo Province”. According to the notice, the project will entail the general upgrading of the 42.2 km-long road section,

including six major intersections, a number of farm accesses, three road bridges and seven major culverts located along the route. The object of the notice is to invite the public to register as interested or affected parties as the project will include upgrades and associated mining activities, seeing that the material for the project will be sourced from seven borrow pits, encompassing an area of up to 125ha located along the road.

Written questions about the proposed upgrade project were sent to SANRAL, and they responded on Tuesday.

Asked when the project was scheduled to commence, Mr Madoda Mthembu (SANRAL Northern Region’s operations and maintenance manager) stated that the tender advert for the construction project would go out in November this year. He added that the exact project value was not yet known at that stage, up until SANRAL had received tender submissions. He did, however, estimate the value at R1,1 billion.

Mthembu referred to the EIA notices along the route. “The construction will remain inside the existing road reserve; the only environmental approvals required are for the borrow pits and for the water-use licence,” he said.

Although the scheduled project is good news for road users in the long run, the ques-

tion, however, remains what SANRAL is going to do about the present state of the road. Regarding this, Mthembu said that they had a routine road maintenance (RRM) project addressing road failures such as potholes that is outsourced to contractors. “They [the contractors] are supposed to ensure that the road is free of potholes on a daily basis and they have been given a budget to fix failures, of which they had already started with the repairs,” said Mthembu. He added that the contractors had been procured by SANRAL through an open-tender process. Judging by the current state of the road, many road users will feel that these contractors obviously seem to be losing the battle against the potholes.

Asked whether the current state of the road could be contributed to factors such as poor design, increased heavy-vehicle traffic or that the road had just reached the end of it life, Mthembu said that the problem was a combination of the latter. “The road has reached its design life and the increase of heavy vehicles from SADC countries also contributes to failures,” he stated. Regarding the amount of traffic carried on this section of the N1 daily, Mthembu said: “The current projection is that there are over 4 000 vehicles per day, of which heavy vehicles make 32% of that figure.”

is in rou. Een

paar jaar woonagtig in Gauteng.

Renda het by Tyres & More asook by Tiger Wheel & Tyre by die Centurion Lifestyle Centre begin werk. Hier was sy werksaam as ‘n X3 onderhoudspesialis. So siek as wat sy was, het sy voortgegaan met haar werk – dikwels te midde van baie pyn. Dawie se ma, Laura van Vuuren, sê: “Haar lojaliteit teenoor haar werk was verstommend.

Renda was my kollega, vriendin en hartsmens. Ek gaan jou ongelooflik baie mis,” voeg Melinda by.

Ek gaan haar baie mis,” sê Renda se dogter, Chelsi Alexander.

Haar liefde

vir Dawie was spesiaal.

Renda laat ‘n groot familie agter.

Back in business three days after devastating fire

The landmark Supa Quick Tyre Centre in Shayandima (Thohoyandou) was almost com pleted gutted by fire last Thursday morning, but through the owners’ resilience, the tyre centre was back in business on Monday morn ing, albeit from a different premises.

According to the 67-year-old Mr Piet Visagie, who co-owns the centre with Mr Theuns du Toit of TJ Supa Quick, the fire started during the early hours of 20 October. A security guard on duty heard the alarm go off just after 03:00. He went to investigate but could see nothing wrong. The security company re-activated the alarm, but three minutes later, the alarm went off again. This time the security guard noticed smoke billowing from the administration office. He immediately phone the security company and then Visagie.

“I got the call around 03:30 and asked one of my staff members to go and unlock the building. I then phoned the fire brigade. They arrived there with a Cruiser with 200 litres of water. When they saw the fire, they said that they did not have enough water en left without saying anything more,” said Visagie.

At first, Visagie was very upset that the fire brigade had left. Little did he know that they had actually gone back to mobilise more support. “Twenty-five minutes later, the first of several fire trucks pulled in,” said Visagie. The fire trucks were mobilised from fire stations across the

district, including the Vhembe, Vuwani, Malam ulele, Collins Chabane and even the Mutale fire station.” So much support arrived that Visagie could tell the Levubu farmers, whom he had mobilised after the first firefighters had left the scene, to stand down.

“If there is one thing I can say about these guys [the firefighters], is that they know what they are doing. Within two hours, they managed to extinguish the fire, restricting it to the front of the building and saving my tyre warehouse,” said Visagie. Visagie added that they had also man aged to get the gas bottles inside the premises out before they could explode.

As to the cause of the fire, Visagie said that they suspected that the continuous load shedding might have contributed. “The clever people told me that every time they switch off the electricity and switch it on again, there is an electricity spike. Over time, these spikes can damage electrical wiring,” said Visagie.

At the time of our going to press, Visagie was still waiting for a final assessment of the damage caused in monetary terms. “I can tell you this - it is going to be a lot of money,” said Visagie. He was grateful that he had insurance, stating that he had on numerus occasions asked himself whether paying such high monthly insurance premiums was worth the money. “I was one of those guys who always said it could never hap pen to me,” said Visagie.

Visagie was very grateful towards all who responded to the fire and offered assistance,

including the Levubu farmers, members of the Soutpansberg Rural Safety group and the local police and forensic unit, who were on the scene at 06:00 that morning to take statements and photos and start their investigation. He also thanked Mr Pieter Lordan for helping him to relocate to new premises.

“Lastly, to every member of TJ Supa Quick, thank you for your efforts in our relocation and

words of support. Our team came together in a time of destruction and chaos and made the best of a bad situation … The good Lord was actually very good to us under the circumstances,” said Visagie.

This is especially true for the 35 staff mem bers in Visagie’s employ, who will still be able to take home a pay cheque it the end of the month, despite the tragedy.

A scene of devastation. Were it not for the professional actions of the firefighters on scene, the whole of the building would have gone up in flames. They managed to extinguish the fire within two hours, restricting the damage to the front part of the tyre centre and saving the warehouse housing all the stock. Photos supplied.

Die mannetjie was buite gevaar. Ook teen druktyd kon ons nie bevestig of die man wat aangekeer is al in die hof verskyn het nie. ‘n Saak is wel teen hom aanhangig gemaak by die Mphephu polisiestasie.

New private hospital taking shape fast

Construction work on the new 92 bed addi tion to the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital (ZPH) in Louis Trichardt is progressing well, with few delays to the work over the past few months.

“The project is on schedule at this stage as we near the completion of the concrete works in the next month. Progress has been good, thanks to the efforts of JC Van Der Linde & Venter Projects and the professional team,” said project manager Mr Walter Dhooge of Terray.

As work nears the construction of the third floor, Dhooge said that the building would now start to receive internal and external brick walls and the first fixed-services installations. “Every thing is on track to have the building watertight before the December builders’ break and, hope fully, before any major rains,” said Dhooge.

The new hospital is essentially a four-storey building (ground level plus three floors). The ground floor will feature a very comprehensive radiology unit, a reception area at the front door, a coffee shop, some administrative offices, a pharmacy and all the public services. At the back, it will tie into the existing hospital through an access passage, which is going to become support and consulting facilities.

On the first floor will be a 27-bed medical ward and an eight-bed paediatric ward. This will tie into the service level because of the fall in the [slope of the] site and a comprehensive new arrangement of services in the new facility, including a kitchen, laundry, new engineering and backup water. The building is going to be completely self-supporting and a stand-alone structure.

Coming up to the second floor, this floor will consist of a 19-bed surgical ward, all rooms with en-suite bathroom arrangements, typical of pri vate-hospital planning, as well as the necessary support infrastructure and facilities. Also on the second floor is a dedicated maternity ward and neonatal and delivery rooms.

With the concrete works nearing completion, the new hospital building will now start to receive internal and external brick walls and the first fixed services installations. Picture is hospital pharmacist Ms Annelize Müller in the new pharmacy’s “door” on the ground level. Photo: supplied.

On the top (third) floor will be the operat ing theatres because of all the equipment and air-conditioning on the roof, from a technical perspective, to service the theatres underneath. Remembrance Day

On Sunday, 13 November, the South African National Defence Force, military veterans and civilians will spend two minutes remembering those who had made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country as part of Armistice Day, also called Remembrance Day.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, the guns fell silent. The war that was supposed to end all wars had come to an end, but not before an estimated nine million people had lost their lives.

To pay homage those who died in the war and subsequent wars, Remembrance Day is commemorated annually. New Louis Trichardt hatchery a boon for Limpopo chicken farmers

Business Partnership

Chicken production in Limpopo got a serious boost on 20 October with the official opening of the Northroost Hatchery outside Louis Trichardt. A modern new facility that can produce 208 000 quality day old chicks per week, Northroost is a joint venture between local Makhado entrepreneur Clive Tigere of KC Hatchery, Country Bird Holdings (CBH) and Bushvalley Chicken.

“This is a game changer for broiler farmers in Limpopo who have never before had access to such consistent volumes of high-quality day-old chicks,” said Tigere at the opening. “The local economy will benefit, more jobs can be created, and the informal market can grow.”

CBH CEO Brendon de Boer explains the partnership: “CBH supplies the fertilised Arbor Acre eggs, Clive oversees the hatching process, and Bushvalley takes a significant percentage of the day-old chicks.” He adds that the modern new facility was built and kitted out with an investment of R56 million. “Clive qualified for an IDC grant and we had started the application process over a year ago, but government funding always takes time and we didn’t want to delay. So, between CBH and Bushvalley we decided to find the bridge financing, so that we could get going with construction.” Tigere’s grant eventu ally came through earlier this month.

Northroost’s first batch of fertilised eggs was set on 24 August and hatched on 14 September, setting in motion a cycle in which two batches a week are hatched, several days apart. So far, Tigere has maintained an excellent hatch ratio of over 90%, and by the grand opening on 20 October, the tally stood at more than a million day-old chicks that had been distributed into the broiler market of Limpopo.

The joint venture was the happy result of a meeting five years ago, when Tigere had ap proached the South African Poultry Association for help with a research project. Tigere had given up a corporate job at McKinsey’s to focus on his fledgling poultry business back home in Makha do. He had noted the high incidence of dumped chicken available in Limpopo and the negative effect it had been having on the informal poultry industry, with local farmers not being able to compete with the dumped imports that were flooding the market. He was introduced to the CEO of Country Bird Holdings, who, in turn, contacted his colleagues at Tzaneen-based Bush valley to introduce them to the young entrepre neur in their area.

Finding enough fertilised eggs of reliable qual ity was a constant battle for Tigere, and when CBH offered to supply as many as he needed, he jumped at the chance. He was not deterred by the fact that he had to collect the eggs in Licht enburg in the North West, and made the 16-hour round trip from Louis Trichardt every week.

“This steady supply of high-quality eggs completely changed our business,” says Tigere. “Having better eggs meant a more predictable, higher hatch rate, and now KC Hatchery could commit to clients with a steady supply of chicks that allowed them to have a business all year round.”

By 2020, KC Hatchery was selling around 19 000 day-old chicks a week, and Tigere had

started discussing a more formal arrangement with CBH and Bushvalley. De Boer had been looking around for opportunities to further the company’s transformation agenda in line with the poultry masterplan, and KC Hatchery was ticking all the boxes. The joint venture was even tually formalised.

“To transform the poultry industry as the masterplan has called for, we believe that more projects such as this one are needed, which came together because there was collaboration between government, integrated producers and local entrepreneurial talent,” says De Boer. “There is a challenge in finding those solid projects with real potential in outlying areas, but they are out there, and working with the IDC to identify them is a way to open new markets and grow the industry. I hope we can find more solid projects such as Northroost, all along the poultry value chain - from hatcheries to processingwhere local businesspeople with potential can be upskilled and supported.”

The new hatchery was constructed with expansion in mind, and the infrastructure will easily be adapted in future to double its current capacity. State-of-the-art hatchery equipment was imported, water reservoirs were built and generators installed to keep the systems going in the event of power outages. “Everything in the facility speaks of quality, and global standards are adhered to,” says Tigere, who has been work ing round the clock since Northroost came on line to ensure he has buyers for every one of the approximately 100 000 chicks that are hatched every week. “It has been scary at times, espe cially when a regular client suddenly cuts their order by half and you wonder where to [go] with the extra 10 000 chicks! But we’re finding our groove with these new, bigger volumes, and fortunately Bushvalley has the capacity to take extra chicks if we have a crisis!”

For Tzaneen-based Bushvalley, the proximity to Northroost adds a factor of convenience , and enables them to provide daily administrative and other support to Tigere. CEO Ian Preece says, “Northroost ticks all the boxes for us – it is a good business opportunity, it allows us to contribute to industry transformation, and it fills a real gap for poultry producers of all sizes in Limpopo. Even as an integrated producer with more resources, we benefit from having a consistent supply of high-quality day-old chicks on our doorstep.”

For Tigere and his local farmer clients, North roost represents a bright new future. “Farmers from Limpopo can now raise high-quality chicks efficiently, without the high transport costs that are generally incurred when bringing chicks in from hundreds of kilometres away,” he says. “As their costs go down, they can become more competitive, grow their businesses, and create more jobs, and we will see this positive response circling further and further.

“The informal poultry industry tends to fly un der the radar, but it represents so much oppor tunity for growth and wealth creation in many areas of the country where there are few other job opportunities. I hope that our example can serve as a model that government could apply to make this happen for other entrepreneurs too, so that transformation can happen organically,” says Tigere. Wenfoto’s moet voor Dinsdag in wees

Kompetisie

082 603 2419 of 015 516 4997 (tydens kantoorure).

“Van U sê my hart: Soek My aangesig! Ek soek u aangesig, o Here!” Psalm 27:8.

Kom ons sê opreg: Ek soek U aangesig, o Here ... U was my hulp, o God van my Heil.

Best potjiekos chefs gather at Khoroni

The region’s best potjiekos chefs should start dusting off those secret recipes and collect the mysterious ingredients in preparation for Khoroni Hotel & Convention Centre’s potjiekos competition.

The competition takes place on Saturday, 29 October, and some very attractive prizes are at stake, apart from the prestigious title. The winner will take home R5 000, while the second prize is R3 000 and R2 000 will go to the chef ending third. Prizes for the entrants with the best stand and for maintaining the best vibe will also be awarded.

“We are planning to build on this concept to also include exhibition stalls and different entertainment activities in future. Our aim is to create exceptional memories by delivering exciting times while visiting the resort,” says the hotel’s marketing manager, Yolanda Gerber. The competition requires a R500 refundable deposit to secure your potjie-stall. It will be held in the upper parking area at Khoroni. “You bring everything to cook with and you are allowed to bring your own cooler boxes. There is a limit of six people within a team and you can cook with gas or fire. The terms and conditions are available on request,” says Yolanda.

Space is limited, so you need to book today. Contact Yolanda on 082 803 9108 (call or WhatsApp) for further information.

Hierdie week, 25 jaar

Presies waarvandaan die twee olifante afkomstig was, was on

When an SEZ dream turns into a nightmare for local communities

The Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ) has been anticipated since the early 2000’s, when the local council announced plans to develop Musina from a village into a city. Welcomed by many, the special economic zone (SEZ) was seen as a chance for makholwa (emigrants) – the region’s many graduates who were forced to find work in other provinces – to come back home, so that their skills and talent could benefit their own communities.

When it was finally stamped in December 2017 – by then-Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Rob Davies – more joy, hope, and expectations filled the hearts of the people of Musina. But, as the project flaws started to show, these hopes and expectations diminish daily. People are particularly opposed to this huge, anti-environmental metallurgical giant project because the affected section of the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve is home to diverse fauna and flora, which can only be found in the Baobab Belt. This area also holds huge cultural significance for the local Venda people.

Local communities are dissatisfied with the consultation processes, which thus far have not only been inadequate but also biased, especially since it soon became clear that the purpose of the south-site of the MMSEZ aims to satisfy Sino-markets, not local ones.

This land has become a particularly contentious issue.

There is no transparency from the MMSEZ and its partners. Most events are held privately; there are no invitations. We only hear via the community grapevine that there was an event. Employment promises are just as sketchy, with Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA) and the Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) each promising vastly different job figures ranging from 21 000 to 100 000. Due to the lack of transparency, our young people fear that they will only benefit from unskilled labour opportunities and that Chinese companies will import labour, as the project unfolds. A lot will change if the MMSEZ project goes ahead. The region is already water scarce, with supply systems prioritising the industrial sector and suburbia, while townships spend days without water. What impact will adding water-intensive mining operations have on a region where the local and district authorities are already battling with water issues? Communities do not have enough information about the plans regarding water.

Weather patterns are already drastically changing and, regardless of rains, farmers claim their boreholes are drying up. With all this in mind, it is implausible to believe that the proposed Musina Dam will also cater for the poor communities, when considering all the other activities that need water. Where does the MMSEZ plan to source its water?

The delicate Vhembe Biosphere reserve will suffer most, due to the changes to the environment. The MMSEZ will negatively affect the entire food pyramid and chain. Already, in areas next to the town, mopane worm reproduction has decreased to almost zero. The ecosystem will be affected by deforestation during land clearance and residue emissions during production, and habitats will be destroyed, with disruptions to nature’s food banks and life cycles. Since the MMSEZ development will likely occupy more than 3 862 hectares of land, what will be the impact of clearing away the indigenous vegetation – including Mopane, Baobab and Marula trees – for this project?

The region’s sacred sites are also threatened, and ancestral places of worship may start to lose its spiritual value. There is no way to quantify this loss of (spiritual) connection between past, present and future generations, which depend on certain rituals. Plagues might strike the communities. Misfortunes may come. Like most African people, Venda people believe that harm to their sacred sites, through development, will bring turmoil and instability in different ways including drought, cattle or human beings going missing, and many more different, bad things.

This is why local communities continue to resist the MMSEZ. They are dissatisfied with both the concept of the metallurgical project and its processes. Communities have raised objections during the EIA processes, and then lodged an appeal after the project got the green light by Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET). It was when LEDET rejected the appeal that the environmental community began to prepare for a legal fight against the MMSEZ. A key issue is the obvious conflict of interest: LEDET is both the applicant for the project and the authority responsible for its environmental authorisation.

Yetman Yabbies and Limpopo claim victory in T10 clashes

The Louis Trichardt Cricket Club’s next round of T10 matches were decided on Saturday, 22 October, with the Yetman Yabbies and Limpopo Dairy claiming victory over their opponents at the Louis Trichardt Oval.

First to take to the field on Saturday were the Yetman Yabbies and SPB Killers, with the latter batting first. The SPB Killers batsmen found the going tough, with six wickets already down with the score on only 26 runs in 4.5 overs. Only three batsmen could manage double-digit scores with the bat, and they were AJ Jansen van Rensburg (14), Lukas Visser (22) and Frikkie van Niekerk (20). In total, SPB Killers racked up 83 run for the loss of seven wickets in their 10 overs.

For the Yetman Yabbies, Riaan Hamman was the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets for the loss of only eight runs in two overs (2/8/2). Jan van Blerk took 2/37/2, while Dirk van den Berg, Riaan Gerber and Christo Boshoff each took one wicket.

Yetman Yabbies’ batting innings also saw a couple of quick wickets falling, with the score on 29/3 in 4,4 overs. The team’s batsmen, however, consolidated and went on to score the winning runs in 8.1 overs with the score on 83 for the loss of only three wickets, securing them a seven-wicket win. Double-digit contributions

with the bat were made by Riaan Hamman (12), Johan van Rooyen (21) and Riaan Gerber (32).

For the SPB Killers, bowler AC Geldenhuys took 2/9/2, while AJ Jansen van Rensburg took 1/23/2.

In the second match of the day, Jolly XI game up against Limpopo Dairy, with Jolly XI batting first. They racked up 86 runs for the loss of five wickets in their 10 overs, with Adil Bhayati (10) and Sahil Patel (46) the only two batsmen to reach double figures.

For Limpopo, RW Geyser took 2/15/2, while Dewald Joubert, Christiaan Barnard and FC Phillipson each took one wicket.

Limpopo did not waste any time in chasing down the runs target, in the end only sacrificing one wicket - that of Leon Olwage, who scored 24 off 12 balls. AJ Fourie (29 not out) and Dewald Joubert (23 not out) steered the team home to a nine-wicket victory with a score of 87/1 in 7.3 overs.

The only Jolly XI bowler to take a wicket was Amir Bux Saif, who took 1/21/1.

The next round of T10 matches will be played at the Louis Trichardt Oval on Saturday, 29 October.

At 13:30, the Roaring Lions will challenge the SPB Killers, while Limpopo Dairy will come up against the Yetman Yabbies at 15:30. Spectators are welcome and entrance is free.
