Pro-Makhado Demarcation Task Team spokesman Nsovo Sambo said they had hoped that the government would move with speed in bringing services to the people of Vuwani, but to their disappointment, nothing is happening. "On 7 May, President Zuma, during his visit to Vuwani, made a announcement that

the Vuwani area would be serviced by Vhembe District. It is very important to note that the pronouncement was just a compromise by the community. Out of that, we are yet to hear from the government, but months keep rolling by without any formal note. It is annoying the people of Vuwani, who have now vowed to take to the streets if the pronouncement is not executed," said Sambo. He further indicated that residents demanded that the shut down offices in the area be opened urgently by Vhembe

for them to access services, in line with the presidential pronouncement. He said the problematic municipality of Malamulele must be ordered “to stop frustrating the peaceful community of Vuwani by using senseless police and ill-advised and inconsiderate ANC leaders in the district and the province.” Dr Alunamutwe Randitsheni, who represented the Vhembe Pastors Forum and took part in the march, urged all to pray for an amicable solution to the problem of Vuwani.

She said the purpose of the clean-up drive was to demonstrate the government’s promise of healthy, clean, safe and environmentally friendly communities. Land grab problems in Shayandima By Elmon Tshikhudo Land grabbing is something that was unheard of in the rural areas, but after calls were made to occupy available land by leaders of some political parties, the tendency is beginning to escalate even to rural areas. Not long ago, residents of Thohoyandou Block F under Thulamela Municipality invaded all the available empty spaces and demarcated sites for themselves. Residents of Shayandima Zone 1 next to the industrial site have joined the trend and have taken over a wide space of land that has not been used for ages. The residents have vowed to occupy the vacant land that has been lying idle for a long time with no development taking place there. Residents, who are mostly youths, said that they had waited for far too long for the municipality to solve the issue of crime and to demarcate the area for residential purposes.

Recently, hundreds of them armed with spades, picks, lashers and other working tools descended on the area between P & L Hardware and Freddy’s, just at the entrance to Shayandima. The Shayandima Zone 1 Concerned Group leader, Mr Godfrey Ndonyane, said the bushy area had become a haven for criminals, with many reports of people being attacked and robbed of their belongings, as well as rapes and other crimes committed there. “We have made many presentations to the municipality about this area, urging them to demarcate it as a residential area. We were told this area has been sold and our investigations have not shown any ownership of the piece of land. We are tired of waiting to have sites. Criminals are using this land, so we are determined to occuppy this area and make it safer again,” he said. Ndonyane further indicated that they had taken a resolution to clear the area and had already arranged with an

expert who would demarcate residential sites for them. “Our actions are peaceful and we even hired a TLB grader to help in clearing the bushes; not long from now, this area will be safe again. We also asked the local fire station to come and be on standby to monitor the fires.” He added that they were not fighting against anybody. “We are grown-up people and would like to have places of our own; this is the area and nothing will stop us from occupying this area,” added Ndonyane. Meanwhile, Thulamela Mayor Mushoni Tshifhango warned residents to desist from interfering with municipal land, saying that doing so was illegal. He said that the land in question was private property. They were also concerned that it was taking a long time to be developed, he said. “We will not allow lawlessness in our municipality, and we urge our residents to follow the right procedure in acquiring land,” said Tshifhango.

Police take fight against crime to the graveyard By Elmon Tshikhudo The Thohoyandou police, whose area has been overwhelmed by crimes such as stealing from motor vehicles, took the fight against criminals to another level at the weekend when they visited the local Mbaleni Cemetery. Their presence at the cemetery nearly caused a stir when mourners thought they had come to arrest some of them. Unbeknown to them the policemen, under the comnand of Capt Takalani Malogwa, were on a campaign to inform the public about crime, which had spread even to the final resting place of people. During the visit to the cemetery, mourners were given tips on how not to fall victim to criminals. According to Thohoyandou station commissioner BrigWilly Mashaba, there has been an increase in the number of cases reported of theft from motor vehicles in the Thohoyandou CBD

and, suprisigly, even at graveyards during funerals. He said the jamming-device method was the commonly used method to gain entry to cars. “This type of crime, where criminals use these remote controls of vehicles to enter the vehicles is of grave concern to us, where we find criminals not treating burials with respect.” He added that their focus was theft out of motor vehicles and motor vehicle theft. “We cautioned the mourners that they should be careful and make sure their vehicles are locked before entering the cemetery, as many have lost their valuables at the cemetery.” Mr Janie Mudau, who was attending one of the funerals, applauded the police for running such a campaign to the extent that they even visited the graveyard. “One does not expect crime to happen here, because our culture dictates that this place should be respected.”

Eventually I received a grant from the National Youth Development Agency in 2012. My farming business grew remarkably,” said Madumi. The Louis Trichardt-based lodge of the Freemasons will have an open day on Saturday, 29 July. It starts at 10:00 and the lodge is open for visitors until 14:30. Worldwide, the Freemasons will celebrate 300 years of official existence in September this year. Freemasonry originated in medieval times when the great cathedrals of Europe were built. The stonemasons who created these structures formed craft guilds to protect

the secrets of their trade. The idea was to help one another and pass on their knowledge to worthy apprentices. In 17th-century England, the guilds began accepting honorary members. These members were men of learning and were not working as stonemasons or even associated with the building trade. These honorary members were later referred to as the Free and Accepted Masons and from this the Freemasons were born. The first Grand Lodge of England was formed in 1717.

According to the Freemason’s website, the organisation provides companionship and social activity for its members and, often, for their families. It emphasises charity, which extends beyond its own people and their dependants. It teaches, by means of ritual, morality or the practical basis of living in civilised society. The guiding principles for Freemasons are brotherly love, relief and truth. The Lion of the North Lodge is situated at 125 Munnik Street.

VMA supports the Tshima Awards By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The Vhembe Music Association (VMA) has just announced its full support for the fourth edition of the Tshivenda Music (Tshima) Awards. The VMA is a non-profit organisation and a custodian of Tshivenda-speaking musicians. Its mandate is to protect the rights of Tshivenda-speaking musicians and improve the standard of the Tshivenda music industry. The association's general secretary, Tshidino Ndou, told Limpopo Mirror that it was easy to come up with ideas, but the implementation of those ideas

was always very difficult. “We praise the team behind the Tshima Awards for celebrating artists while they are still alive,” he said. “I always encourage our members to participate in all the awards, even if they don't win.” Entries for the 2017 Tshivenda Music Awards (Tshima) officially closed on 7 July after the deadline was extended by another week. The extension was to give artists who had missed the deadline a second chance to submit their entries. Tshima is an annual ceremony established to recognise, promote and reward local artists who pride themselves on

singing in the Tshivenda language while preserving the rich heritage and cultural diversity of the Vhavenda people. The event's director, Mr Augustine Nethononda, has since said the event would see nominees competing in14 categories, two more than the last event. Final nominees will be announced at a gala dinner scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday). “The VMA supports the Tshivenda Music Awards and will continue to encourage artists, songwriters, composers and producers to preserve the Tshivenda language and culture through music,” Tshidino said.

Tshilidzi Respect Mulaudzi, a 21-year-old resident from Muledane, is one of the few comic artists in the area. Mulaudzi, who is also known as Las Vendas Comics, started doing comics last August and was inspired by the comics of Noko Mashaba, created by Jonas Lekganyane. “When I was young I used to watch cartoons on television a lot. At that time, I didn't have the right tools to design my own cartoons and I ended up drawing them in my school books,” he said. He also believes that one

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho A radio dee-jay at Univen FM, Oscar “Dj Heatwave” Mudau, believes that he sits in the right place at a community radio station where he is able to reach thousands of listeners and instil a change of sorts in society. “I have always dreamed about changing the lives of young people, especially those from unfortunate backgrounds,” he said. “Although I grew up in a poor community, I always knew I would eventually change the lives of the less fortunate. When I got the chance to be on radio, I knew my dream had been fulfilled.” The 29-year-old dee-jay presents the Univen Community Drive between 15:00 – 18:00 on weekdays. This resident of Tshitomboni is currently studying towards an honours degree in arts for an education and linguistics qualification. He said that he knew that being on air was not the end of his quest for a platform from which he could relay messages to promote a positive attitude to the youth. “I had to understand why I was on air,” he said. “I knew I wasn’t just there to entertain, but to educate and revive the hope of young people in rural areas.” He said that his talent was something he started displaying from a young age, and that people from his community were always encouraging when they noticed his talent because he used to imitate radio presenters. “I participated in many radio auditions, in fact more than 10 times with different radio stations,” he said. He said growing up in the rural village life had never been easy since he had been raised by his grandmother, who depended on a social grant for living. “I used to walk more than eight kilometres to a secondary school in the nearby village of Dididi,” he said. He told Limpopo Mirror that he was also inspired by the late legendary newsreader Mbulungeni Mafenya Mphaphuli. “People used to call me Mbulungeni Mafenya Mphaphuli because, as a youngster, I had imitated him,” he said. Despite his success, he believes he has a lot to accomplish. “I go to schools to warn pupils about the dangers of making bad choices,” he said. “I have a supportive wife, Tshifhiwa, who believes in me.”

Breakfast show Vhandilani presenter Mpho “Jantiby” Nefale and Thovhele Vho-Vele Kutama lead the painting of Kutama Secondary.

As part of the mission of the Ri a luvha programme to visit senior traditional leaders around the Venda, Phalaphala FM visited Vho-Thovhele Vele Kutama at Muduluni last Friday and Saturday to celebrate Mandela month. The event started with career guidance to all Grade 12 pupils around the Kutama secondary schools and the painting of Kutama Secondary. The event was attended by Vhembe Executive Mayor Cllr Florence Radzilani, senior traditional chiefs, pastors and community members. “Our aim is to engage with our listeners, show how much we appreciate their support and, in the process, build the much-needed emotional bond between our audience and the station,” station manager Freddy Sadiki said. “This is an opportunity for business to market their brands by partnering with brand Phalaphala FM. We call upon businesses in different areas, in partnership with Vho-Thovhele to engage with us, so that we can make visits to their respective areas a reality. We also believe this initiative will serve to remind our youth about the importance of showing respect to our traditional leaders.” He added that since the station

was operating on a shoe string budget, it became necessary for the chiefs and their local businesses to come on board to make this worthy initiative a reality. Thovhele Vho-Vele Kutama said that there was a need to teach young children about the value of culture and the importance of restoring it. “Culture and tradition are the foundation on which the prosperity of each nation starts. A nation that does not respect its culture is doomed and does not have any direction.” He said that scientists considered Africa as the cradle of the human race and therefore “no matter if you are white or black, you are human, and your roots go back to Africa,” he said. He appealed to the youth to respect elderly people and stated that Africans must be proud of themselves, their culture and traditions. He stressed the fact that immorality is the enemy of traditional leaders since people have moved away from good morals. Cllr Radzilani said that, with an African style of living, there would be no street kids, hobos or hunger. “We must start practising our culture of being proud, so that our children will grow up knowing their identity,” she said. She outlined that, in a democratic country such as South Africa, no culture is inferior to another, that all cultures are equal. She criticised parents, however, who are not teaching their children their Thovhele Vho-Vele Kutama interviewed by Terry “The own vernacular. Big Dudu” Mudau during the visit. 298 676 impairment they suffered due to inadequate collection practices. The lack of oversight also greatly contributed to unauthorised expenditure of R302 071 369 because of expenditure incurred in excess of the amounts provided for in the votes of the approved budget. As for irregular expenditure, the AG states that the municipality incurred expenditure amounting to R180 679 556 as a result of the contravention of the supply chain management (SCM) regulations. With all these “losses” mentioned above it is no wonder that the VDM is technically bankrupt. “…the financial statements indicate that the municipality’s current liabilities exceeded its current assets by R193 125 360. This condition, along with other matters as set forth … indicates the existence of a material uncertainty that may cast significant doubt on the municipality’s ability as a going concern,” the AG states. With the 2016/17 financial year drawing to an end on 30 June this year, much has changed at the VDM. One such change was the recent appointment of Mr Reuben Rambado as municipal manager. Whether his appointment will have any positive impact on the VDM’s latest financial statement to be reviewed, remains to be seen. The VDM cannot, however, fare too much worse than in previous years. One would, however, suspect that they would like to break the cycle of “bad reviews”. They also received a disclaimer of opinion in 2013 and 2014, while getting an adverse audit opinion for the 2014/15 financial year.

The ball hit the side net for a goal kick. Both sides made one replacement to their starting lineup in the last half. Berea replaced Kgasago Mabu with Murendeni Makonde while Ngalavhani introduced Atshidzaho Tshifularo for Tshedza Nemahunguni.

Berea took the lead in the 65th minute. Dakalo Ratshitanga, who scored a hat trick in the game, was on target, following a square pass from Elias Ranyasa. Ratshitanga scored two more goals in quick succession towards the end of the game. Berea’s goals against Muraluwe Shining Bombers were scored by Dakalo Ratshitanga, Edwin Ramphabana (2) and Elias Ranyasa.

Berea FC secured a place in the quarterfinal of the Zimunga Soccer Tournament after winning two matches at the Muswodi Dipeni grounds last weekend. They beat Ngalavhani FC 4-1 on Saturday before crushing Muraluwe Shining Bombers by the same margin the following day. Their game against Ngalavhani was a thriller from the onset. It took Berea only nine minutes to stamp their authority. Their left winger, Elias Ranyasa, dribbled past four Ngalavhani defenders and beat the keeper with a ground cutter. Ngalavhani did not give in without a fight, despite conceding the early goal. They initiated numerous dangerous moves from behind, giving the defenders of Berea no time to breathe. Their efforts paid dividends in the 28th minute. Tshedza Nemahunguni beat the offside trap and sent the keeper the wrong way. The captain of Ngalavhani, Murendeni Negwangwatini, was booked for a late tackle on Ernest Simba two minutes before the teams adjourned for the half-time break. The second half saw Berea pressing hard in their search for a winning goal. Edwin “Cafu” Ramphabana, Murendeni Negwangwatini of Ngalavhani controls the ball while Dathe Berea veteran kalo Musetsho of Berea pulls him back.

Police to investigate death of girl Crime A 19-year-old girl and her unborn child were brutally killed by an unknown number of assailants who broke into her house on 19 July. Police have identified the girl as Nare Beanice Malebana. She was a Grade 12 learner at Jim Chavani High School. The incident happened at

approximately 19:00 at Xikundu village, near Saselamani, where Nare stayed with her mother. “It is alleged that the deceased was attacked at her home by unknown suspects who broke into the house and shot her several times before fleeing the scene,” said provincial police spokesperson Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

Nare’s mother was also in the house but, said Ngoepe, managed to escape unhurt. “The motive behind this incident is still unknown,” said Ngoepe. The police in Saselamani are calling on the public to assist them with their investigations. Anyone with information is urged to contact Capt Boshomane at Tel 084 322 1341.

Arbitration struggle continues By Frank Mavhungu The struggle for promotion between Mikhado Football Club and Mpheni Home Defenders will soon come to an end. During its sitting held at the league’s offices two weeks ago, the South African Football Association (Safa) appeal board ruled in favour of Mikhado FC. Home Defenders felt offended by the appeals board's decision and they took the matter up for arbitration last week. The two sides were still waiting for the arbitrators’ decision at the time of our going to press. The case relates to an incident that took place during the Safa Vhembe promotional playoff match between Mpheni Home Defenders and Mikhado FC at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday, June 18.

Home Defenders won the game through a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw at the end of the regulation time. Mikhado lodged a protest with the referee shortly before the game started. In their protest, Mikhado alleged that one of the players for Home Defenders, Rinae Hector Mulaudzi, was not properly registered with the club. During its meeting that was held a week later to decide on the matter, the league’s disciplinary committee ruled that the player was properly registered with the club. That decision did not go down well with Mikhado, who took the matter up with the Safa Appeals board. The case was initially dismissed on the basis that the proper channels were not followed. Mikhado did not throw in the towel and filed the appeal afresh. The appeals board found that Mulaudzi had a dual

registration in that he was registered with another club from Safa Capricorn during the 2016/17 soccer season. The board again ordered that Home Defenders must forfeit the points to the opponents in all matches where Mulaudzi was fielded and that they must pay all the costs for the appeal board sitting. The decision was bitter pill to swallow for Home Defenders. They immediately prepared the documents and took the matter up for arbitration within 72 hours as required by the league’s rules and regulations. The arbitrators’ decision will be binding on both parties in terms of the rules and regulations. The winners will represent the Safa Vhembe in the provincial play-offs that will be held on a date still to be announced. Vhembe Regional Association will host the provincial play-off matches.
