Young mom brutally slaughtered at home

Cop gets bail after allegedly shooting granny Granny Marandela Bebabi (See story on page 2).

The peaceful community of Phadzima in the Nzhelele area was shaken last Friday, when the body of a 22-yearold student was found.

Siloam police discovered the body of Lufuno Mavhunga at her home in the early hours of Friday (17th). According to a police spokesperson, Capt Tharaga, she was brutally murdered.

The police have confirmed that the post mortem results show severe wounds to her neck, clearly indicating a deliberate act to kill her.

Tharaga said that they had opened a case of murder and investigations were underway.

The motive for her murder were still unknown, said Tharaga.

Lufuno was studying at the Makwarela Campus of the Vhembe FET College in Sibasa. She was staying alone, since her mother was working at Morningside in Gauteng.

Her traumatised mother, Pertunia Mavhunga, said she was totally shocked when she received the news of her daughter’s murder.

“I am confused and shocked and do not know what to do. I nearly collapsed. Even today I don’t know what to say about my daughter’s death,” she said. “She was a lovely daughter and dedicated to her studies. Justice must now take its course,” she added.

Her furious uncle, Fanuel Muthelo, said he didn’t understand what the world had come to. “People have become inhumane. My lovely niece is gone and I still can’t believe it,” he said.

Lufuno is survived by her 15-month-old son, Zwivhuya Managa, who stays with relatives at present. She will be buried at Phadzi- Lufuno Mavhunga´s grieving mother, Pertunia, and her aunt Dora Muthelo, ma tomorrow (Saturday). with Lufuno´s son, Zwivhuya Managa.

Plain Truth The quest for morality

“Let’s stop treating women as sex objects” August has been declared as the month of women in South Africa. During this month, South Africans across the length and breadth of this country remember the heroics of those women who have gone ahead of us.

Many stories of such women are told in different social forums, whilst some remain untold. Stories that remain untold have a lot to do with the physical, psychological and emotional abuse that South African women suffer at the hands of men (husbands and other male relatives).

I want to reflect a bit on those untold sexual abuse stories. Sexual abuse is, in most instances, associated with the stigma of rejection. Women who have been sexually abused by their own often do not want to come into the open because they do not want to be rejected by their families. In some instances, they do not want to do that for fear of becoming a laughing stock. They would rather die in silence than be terrorized or face abusive language being hurled at

them for having been violated.

In dedicating this article to those victims of abuse, I would like to point out two most critical factors that perpetuate such cases. African men, in some instances, view women as lesser human beings than they are (inferior); some regard women as weaker beings that can be easily bulldozed or manipulated by men; some look at them as sex objects, and whatever relations they have with them, men are more interested in sex than in anything else.

That is why many marriages are not built on the firm foundation of love but that of sex; hence, women are rated more highly when they enter their bedroom than when they leave it. A man might not share a joke with his wife or talk to her during the day, but would like her to fulfill her conjugal responsibilities at night with a broad smile. Some African women are seen as child-making factories, to the point where they remain valuable only for as long as they continue to give birth. As a result

of the above-mentioned reasons, African women have always experienced abuse from those men who should have loved and cherished them instead of seeing them as sex objects.

The plain truth about these matters is that our women are not sex objects and should never be treated as such. God created them in his own image, in the same manner as the men. Men and women are both sexual beings who should enjoy a sexual relationship within the context of marriage: “The two shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).

We should bring back respect for the institution of marriage at all costs. There is no place where the total sharing of sex is more beautifully pictured than in the relationship between a man and his wife. It is a symbol of a spiritual relationship and the expression of the complete oneness of two persons in married love. Let us stop treating women like sex objects!

Bail for policeman after shooting incident A policeman employed at the Mphephu SAPS station briefly appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing a charge of attempted murder.

W/O Norman Naledzani (48) of Mauluma village allegedly shot granny Marandela Bebani (64) from the same village last Friday. The case relates to a quarrel between the two in the granny’s butchery in Mavhunga.

Naledzani was allegedly off duty

at the time of the incident.

Ms Bebani was shot in her right leg. She was taken to the Mauluma Clinic and later transferred to the Siloam Hospital.

She was discharged on Monday.

The Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, said Naledzani was arrested at the scene and his service pistol was taken from him. He added that the family should be patient while the investigation was continuing. Mulaudzi said

that, pending the outcome of the investigation, they would take internal action against the police officer. An angry son of the victim, Mr Daniel Mawela, says the family need answers from the police after the incident.

He added that his family and the community were still shocked about the unpleasant incident.

Naledzani was granted bail of R1 500 and the case was postponed to 4 October. * See photo on page 1.

Judgement reserved in kingship case Judgment was reserved in the long-awaited High Court ruling on the Vhavenda Kingship case.

Last Thursday, four senior traditional leaders concluded their submissions in the High Court in Thohoyandou. The four senior Vhavenda traditional leaders are Thovhele Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, Thovhele Gole Musiiwa Mphaphuli, Thovhele Tshidziwelele Nephawe and Thovhele Kennedy Midiyavhathu Tshivhase.

Tshivhase, Mphaphuli and Nephawe are challenging the findings of the Nhlapo Commission of Traditional Leadership Claims, which was released by Pres Jacob Zuma on 29 July 2010. The commission recom-

mended that the kingship of the Vhavenda nation be restored under the lineage of Mphephu Ramabulana.

Representing Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase, Adv Simon Lebala contended that their submissions were based on the fact that, since the Tshivhase Dynasty split from Dzata (the Mphephu Ramabulana kraal), they were never ruled by anybody. “We want the Vhavenda people to be ruled by three senior traditional leaders (Mphephu Ramabulana, Tshivhase and Mphaphuli) separately, as each king in his own dynasty. We want three kings to rule the Vhavenda people, like in the Eastern Cape where there are three kings,” said Lebala. The Tshivhase claims were also sup-

ported by Mphaphuli, represented by Adv Tsietsi Ramatsekisa.

Adv Mbuyiseli Madlanga, representing Thovhele Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, dismissed the claims of Mphaphuli, the Vhangona and Tshivhase as baseless, because in the history of the Vhavenda people, Mphephu Ramabulana was the elder clan.

According to Madlanga, they fully support the findings of the Nhlapo Commission because the commission looked at each claimant accurately and Thovhele Toni Mphephu was the rightful heir to the throne.

Judge Francis Lekgodi also announced that the judgment would soon be announced in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

“Below average services in Malamulele” In last week's edition, we published a report on the demands of residents of Malamulele township for the establishing of an own municipality. In reaction to the report, an internet reader of our paper, Tsanwi, writes: municipality should never be established on the premise of bantustanism, tribalism or ethnicity.

Right from the onset there have been prophets of doom who were against Thohoyandou and Malamulele being incorporated into one municipality. A lot was spoken on how the "Vendas" would serve their own selfish interests. One very prominent figure even suggested then that it would be better for them to be incorporated into Giyani.

History tells us that Shangaans and Vendas used to live side by side, peacefully until the apartheid regime decided to sever the relationship through the establishment of the homelands.

It is for the proponents of Malamulele Municipality to assure the world that memories of the then Gazankulu homeland are not playing a greater part in this regard.

Guys at the old Agriven building (Thulamela) cannot spare the rod either. Their below-average service delivery in Malamulele and the surrounding areas cannot be condoned. They have been engaged in the "chopping and changing" of a town that simply has no more space to expand, whilst failing to capitalise on the fact that Mal-

amulele has vast spaces to establish a world-class town.

This is unacceptable as it makes pessimists stand on the roof tops and proclaim that "we told you so, Vendas will always cheat the Shangaans".

Whatever the government decides, playing into the hands of tribalism and bantustanism will create a very dangerous precedent and that is: "former Venda for Vendas only and former Gazankulu for Shangaans only", and by so doing the whole country will follow suit, the results of which will be that we will be exactly where we were before 1994.

Division of Thulamela should be based on service delivery and former homeland boundaries should be avoided at all costs.

Vhamusanda Ramabulana laid to rest Mourners from around the province and further afield gathered at Madabani at the house of the late VhamusandaVho-Mavhungu Ramabulana on Saturday to pay him their last respects. He was later buried at the Ravele cemetery.

Vhamusanda Ramabulana passed away at his home on 9 August, after a short illness.

During the ceremony, Khosi Vho-Rudzani Sinthumule said that the deceased had been a soldier for the bigger part of his life and epitomised the best that came from the traditional leadership.

“He was one of those men who fought for development in the prime of his life and excelled at everything he did. He will be remembered for his dedication and commitment to the leadership,” he added. “His death will undoubtedly leave a void too difficult to fill, not only in the family, but also in our community as whole.". Sinthumule said that although the family, friends and community accepted what had happened, it would be difficult to forget that this death had robbed the community of an energetic leader who was full of

zeal and courage.

The mayor of the Makhado municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, described the death of Vhamusanda Ramabulana as a big loss to the family, community and municipality. "This man was one of a kind, an unique person who was always ready to help any member of his family, community and whoever came to him for help. We have lost a great leader," he said.

Mutavhatsindi said the deceased had played a uniting role as chief and they all looked upon him as exemplary.

Chinhengo said the first three suspects, Collins Muza (35), Jafali Mustafa (32) and Mohamed Idrus Laudon (28), were arrested on Thursday at around 20:00, following an ambush near the Limpopo River. Chinhengo said three more suspects, Aboo Benelo Jussabi (31), Lee Shas Ajiba (29) and Joe Khalid, were arrested on Friday, following the interception of their cars.

The other two suspects, Juma Afiki (34) and Abalu Kasimu (37), managed to escape but were later arrested.

The suspects were found in possession of fake SA vehicle registration documents, counterfeit temporary import permits of the stolen vehicles, duplicate keys and the tracking and locking systems had also been tampered with.

The suspects were using Zimbabwe as a transit point before later smuggling the stolen vehicles into Malawi through Mozambique. Chinhengo said the SAPS confirmed that the cars had been stolen.

“We have intensified patrols along the Limpopo River and we are also working with our South African counterparts to curb cross-border criminal activities occurring along the border. We have since engaged Interpol to assist us with investigations, so that we establish the market of those stolen cars,” Chinhengo said.

The suspects appeared in court earlier this week on car theft and smuggling charges and the case was postponed to next Thursday (30 August) for further investigation. They remain in custody.

Family in shock after mysterious death Pensioner (71) bludgeoned to death The Mbedzi family at Tswinga outside Thohoyandou is still in a state of shock, following the mysterious death of one of their sons.

Avhashoni Mbedzi (18), a Grade 9 pupil at the Luvhaivhai Secondary School, went missing from home on Saturday last week, after telling family members that he was going to friends in the neighbourhood.

He never returned home.

He was found dead on Thursday, hanging from a tree, not far from his home.

A family member, Mmbulaheni Tshikororo, said when the boy had not come back home, they had never suspected that

something bad had happened to him. He said they had started panicking when he had not come home the following day and that was when they decided to inform the local traditional leader. “We were advised to go to the police station and to file a missing person docket, which we did on Monday. The police came and residents joined in and a search party was dispatched to the village, but it did not pay any dividends,” he said.

It was only after a cattle herder informed the community of the grisly find that they rushed to the scene and found him hanging from a tree. He was found near his home.

With sadness written all over her face, Azwinndini Mbedzi is failing to come to terms with the death of her son.

“What puzzles us is that there was blood under him and he had several visible wounds,” Tshikororo said. “We need answers because we do not know what had happened to him.

We are not pointing fingers at anybody now, but we will wait for the law to take its course,” he added.

He stated that they hoped the post mortem would shed light on what could have happened.

The mother of the young man, Ms Josephine Mbedzi, was overwhelmed with grief.

“I am saddened and I am in a state of shock. I do not have any idea as to what could have happened.”

The deceased’s sister, Ms Avhapfani Mudau, said it was surprising that after being missing for days, his body was still intact. She mentioned that he had wounds on his mouth, hand and abdomen, which suggests that it is not a “usual suicide.”

Meanwhile, rumours doing the rounds in the village are that the young man was ritually murdered.

The cruel murder of a Limpopo pensioner on pension day has sparked fear in the community of Maphophe in Malamulele outside the Kruger National Park that criminals are targeting pensioners.

Mr Risimti Wilson Shivambu (71) was found bludgeoned to death outside the village last Friday (17th). The village headman, Patrick Maphophe, said Shivambu went to look for cattle after coming from a pension pay point with other pensioners. “When we realised that he had already been gone for a considerable time, we organised a search party to look

for him, but it yielded no positive results,” said Maphophe.

On Friday, his body was discovered in the bush and an iron rod was found next to the body.

“It appeared that someone had assaulted him with the iron rod.

More incidents of prostitution in Makhado Prostitution has become rife in certain areas of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and the efforts of the SAPS to curb this problem seem to have a minimal effect. Young girls continue to sell their bodies for as little as R10 to male customers and business often gets conducted in the bushes next to the road.

A popular spot for the prostitutes is at the corner of Grobler and Malherbe Street. The police are well aware of this and regularly patrol the area to monitor the activities of the sex workers.

This spot has become infamous by the name Dzithangani (reed cane), due to the fact that there are lots of wild reeds next to the road.

When Limpopo Mirror’s reporter first visited Dzithangani last week, the police were busy raiding the bushes. Several sex workers were found hiding in the wild grass and the police escorted them to the back of the police van.

“They always arrest us and demand we pay a fine,” said one of the three sex workers found in the bushes. Another one added

that the fine which they were normally required to pay for selling sex in a prohibited area ranged from R10 to R150.

One lady claimed that she was literally caught “in the act” with a client the previous week, but that the police merely told the client to go away. According to this woman, the policeman who caught her demanded sex before letting her go. “I agreed, because I surely knew he wouldn’t be going away with a piece of my flesh,” she said.

What the Limpopo Mirror has established is that the police vans patrol the area almost every 10 minutes. When they arrive, the sex workers sneak into the tall grass, only to resurface once again when the police vehicles have passed.

“Our kids need to eat and wear nice clothes,” explained a woman last Thursday. “Do you think we’re here for fun?” the same woman asked. “Arali ni sa funi u renga fhirani zwanu (If you’re not here to buy sex, then just go your way).”

Soon after saying that, she mentioned that she had only managed to cater for two clients that

day, so she would have to walk to Tshikota instead of taking a taxi. “She’s from Zimbabwe, that one,” said another. “Next time when you get money, come and buy from me. Even if you have only R10.”

According to women who agreed to speak to us, the sex workers at the corner of Grobler and Malherbe Street commute daily from places such as Thohoyandou, Sinthumule and Kutama, Nzhelele, Musina and Elim. They are adamant that the “no-prostitution” operation by the SAPS will never stop them from conducting business in town. “You can’t sell sex in the village,” they maintained.

The spokesperson for the Makhado police, Capt Maano Sadiki, said that as the police they arrested the sex workers and took them to court, where they would normally be given a ticket (fine).

“These same people always go back to selling their bodies after being released,” he said. “But that does not stop us from doing our job. That area is dangerous to both the client and those who sell their bodies, since they can mug or kill each other.”

SA tourist robbed of R23 000 in Zim A 53-year-old South African tourist on a visit to Zimbabwe was attacked and robbed of R23 000, a cell phone and a suitcase containing his clothes by three unknown suspects at a lay-bye along the Beit Bridge-Bulawayo Road, police have said.

Controversial doctor’s case postponed

The controversial medical practitioner, Justice Mulaudzi of Makwarela, appeared in the Makhado Magistrate’s Court again on Monday, facing a charge of rape. His case was postponed to 17 September.

Mulaudzi had allegedly raped a 25-year-old female on 26 June at Makhado. The case was postponed for further investigation.

17 Unknown people buried at Mbaleni Seventeen bodies which had been lying unclaimed at the Tshilidzini Hospital mortuary for a long time were finally laid to rest during a mass funeral at Mbaleni Cemetery in Thohoyandou on Thursday.

The 17, most of whom were foreign nationals, were buried as a result of the cooperation between the Vhembe Funeral Practitioners Association (VEFPA) and the Thulamela Municipality. It was a normal funeral service, with a pastor who conducted the burial.

Among the mourners were the mayor of Thulamela, councillors, the municipal management committee, officials from Thulamela, VEFPA members and general staff from Thulamela.

During the ceremony, Thulamela Mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi urged local businesses to assist VEFPA and the government in giving the deceased decent burials.

“A society that love, care and respect women” Musina Municipality has committed itself to building a caring and truly non-sexist society that protects its women and children, said the mayor of this border town during Women’s Month celebrations last Saturday.

Phiri added that it was important to build a society that loved, cared for and respected its women and children and treated them with unconditional and the utmost dignity that they rightfully deserved.

number of young women today have allowed themselves to be used as sex objects for purposes of financial and material gain,” she said According to Phiri, young women no longer take pride in who they are. “The exchange of fast cash for their womanhood has become a norm for young women, even if it means that they are exploited by men who abuse their youthfulness. In most cases of teenage pregnancy, in an attempt to avoid such a situation, many young women have resorted to illegal and unsafe back-street abortions as measures to terminate those pregnancies before they get noticed. Unfortunately, some of them have died, while others are suffering permanent damage of their reproductive systems.”

The Levubu SAPS opened missing person’s file, after Mr Moses Munegwani (42) of TshakhumaLuvhalani disappeared. He was last seen on 2 August.

His distressed mother, Ms Olga Munengwani, said that this came as a total surprise to her, as he didn’t come to collect his lunch for days. “We started a search at hospitals and police stations, but all our efforts yielded no results,” she said.

She said the matter was then reported to the police, but till now, he has not been found. Olga said the disappearance had cast “a dark cloud

over the family. We don’t know what happened to our beloved son,” she said. They keep on hoping he will come back one day.

Olga is making a plea to her son, wherever he might be, to come back.

“Please my son, come back home.

We still need you and we miss your warmth,” she pleaded.

Community mourns death of soccer star Two members of a family in Mafukani village near Matavhela in Mutale were recently killed in two accidents on the same road.

The two incidents shocked the community and some are blaming the devil for causing the death of these two people.

On 6 April, Gogo Maemu Tshifhumulo (79) was on her way from Matavhela to Mafukani when she was knocked down by a vehicle on the Matavhela-Tshithuthuni Road. She died instantly.

On 9 August, Mr Nkhumbu-

leni Justice Tshifhumulo (25), the gogo’s grandson, was killed in an accident on the same road.

Justice was a promising soccer player and captain of Mafukani Dangerous Soccer Sparrows at the time of his death.

Family spokesperson and uncle of the deceased Mr Thivhulawi Mbevhana said the family was devastated after the latest accident. The team’s representative, Thabelo Rakhadani, said the death of the team’s captain had left them with deep wounds that would take time to heal.

“We lost a promising soccer

player in the village, whose soccer skills cannot be replaced. We have organised a soccer tournament to be played next week as a way of honouring his good work,” said Rakhadani.

The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide. · In a separate accident, Mutale police are also investigating another case of culpable homicide, after a 38-year-old man, Mr Mavhungu Nzhalavhani of Folovhodwe village, died when he was knocked down by a vehicle on the MulodiThengwe road.

One such church is the Apostolic Faith Mission Assembly Church at Makwarela. During the recent National Women’s Day, the church and the local community put aside everything and spent the day getting

They also listened to advice from doctors and dieticians, who spoke about different diseases, mostly lifestyle diseases, and how they could be overcome.

were sick with diseases that could have been avoided simply by exercising and the correct diet. “As a church we are worried about the state of health of our members and we cannot keep quiet while people get sick and die. We have decided that we should hold such an event at least twice a year as a way of making people aware that they should take their health seriously,” he said.

His debut Afro Jazz Tshivenda album, titled Lushie Lwo Naka (a beautiful newborn baby), is becoming so popular that even young children keep on reciting his songs during playtime.

The album is receiving massive airplay on SABC radio and Limpopo regional community radio stations.

In a dramatic move to consolidate his self-proclaimed musical crown, Mmbi left his thousands of adoring fans crying for more when he performaned at the Makhado show grounds last weekend.

Commonly known as King David by his fans, Mmbi started his musical career by playing drumbaza (a guitar-like homemade instrument made of an old oil tin and rubber bands) while he was 12 years old. “I started playing music just to entertain people, performing at wedding feasts, Christmas carnivals and school concerts. I bought my first guitar in 1989 after I had raised money by collecting firewood and cleaning other people’s houses. I then played with different disco groups, including the now-defunct Mahoshi and Jekete in the nineties, but things did not go well until I decided to dump music and look for a job.”

He says the music bug kept on haunting him and he decided to go back to music. “I was attacked by a mysterious illness and I spent a long time in hospital. I had lost hope to live until I saw a vision in my hospital bed. My late grandmother was telling me that things would never be right for me until I delivered good news to the community through music. I then called family members to bring my guitar to the hospital, and I got better and better when I played it daily.

After I was discharged from the hospital, I forgot everything and started concentrating on my music career.”

He added that he was unemployed at the time and did not know where to get the money to record his music. “I tried to raise money by doing piece jobs and asking donations from family members and friends. I worked hard until I got enough money to go to the studio, and the rest is now history. I am satisfied with the way in which the album is being received by members of the community. It is in almost every household and I am very happy for the support I am receiving from my fans.”

Mmbi says

the album was released last month and has already sold more than 15 000 copies, “a great achievement, considering that I am doing the marketing and distribution on my own. I have no doubt that it will continue to sell because people are supporting me overwhelmingly.”

Apart from the title track (Lushie lwo naka), some of the hit songs that are on everybody’s lips are A dovhe a mu fune, Lwo tuwa na bada, Lufuno, Mukegulu, Nese la Tshilidzini and Nyamutwa wo lala.

David said he would never forget to thank all the people who had played a role in his musical career. “I cannot mention them all by name because they are too many. I recognize their contribution because I am what I am because of them. I will always worship my fans because their support is massive. I will go back to the studio next year and I promise to give them something hotter than my present offering.”

“Give us a proper road to our beloveds’ graves A resident of Tshikota, Mr Livingstone Phulwana (89), says the Makhado Municipality is ignoring their request for a proper road that will give them easy access to the graves of their kindred. These old graves are situated at the back of the cemetery in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Phulwana says he has been communicating with a former councillor at the Makhado Municipality, Mr Mushavhela Muvhumbe, and the acting municipal manager, Mr Elias Mugari, for 18 months, requesting the municipality to at least make a road and put in a gate that will lead to the old graves.

These old graves, some of which remain unmarked, are on the right-hand side at the back of the main cemetery, among some huge bushes and trees.

“I think the municipality should provide the means for us to be able to visit the graves without having to first jump the fence and face the bushes, which are full of poisonous snakes,” he told Limpopo Mirror during our visit to the gravesite a week ago.

“I don’t remember when it was exactly that my grandmother was buried here, but it was during those days when this site outside the cemetery was provided for people whose citizenship was not certain.”

At least two snakes were spotted in the grass.

The man hired by Phulwana to clear the bushes around the graves was not scared at all, while all the other people backed away from the bushes after spotting the snakes.

It seems as if workers at the cemetery clearing the space for new graves had dumped everything that was cleared away on top of the old graves beyond the fence.

Livingstone Phulwana’s grandmother, Nyathela Lydia Phulwana, was buried in one of these graves around 1962.

“These people have been extending the cemetery for some time, but they desecrate our graves by throwing grass and soil over them.

The painful part of the story is the fact that my grandma’s grave has been turned into a dumping site.”

According to the spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, there is nothing that the municipality can do, as the graves are located on private land.

Tshikororo leads congregation Hundreds of members of the United African Apostolic Church gathered at Tshidimbini village outside Thohoyandou at the weekend for the official opening of the church’s new congregation in the village.

The opening was officiated by the founder of the church, Archbishop Elias Miriri, and included the introduction of the church to the local traditional leader, Chief Tomboni Tshivhase. The new branch is under the leadership of Pastor Patson Tshikororo.

“We are here as true Africans who uphold our culture; we revere our chiefs as prescribed by the Bible. We are here to pay homage to our leader as a church. We do not want to surprise our chief by starting something

that is not known to him,” said Miriri.

He added that the church had traditional foundations and was in line with the old church. The relationship between the church and traditional leaders is, according to Miriri, something that will never fade and will stand the test of time.

“We urge the new leader of the congregation to follow that tradition,” said Miriri. Chief Tomboni Tshivhase said he was very humbled that “people of God” had visited him.

He commended Tshikororo for the good work he was doing in the church and the community.

Pastor Tshikororo said he was humbled that even the founder of the church had made time for the function.

Stronger academic collaboration with France The magumaguma are terrorising us” If the activities last week Thursday at Univen are anything to go by, academic ties between the University of Venda and France are poised to be strengthened.

The Art Gallery at Univen was a hive of activity, with students and academics taking turns at participating in the French Day on campus. It formed part of the French Days and the France-South Africa Seasons 2012 and 2013 that are currently taking place at most South African universities.

This comes as a result of the collaboration between the French Embassy and the University of Venda.

Many activities, such as poetry and cultural exchanges, took place during the day-long programme and many papers were presented by experts in different fields.

The programme ended on a high note when a cocktail function was held and the screening of the French movie, La Princesse de Montpensier by famous

French director, Bertrand Tavernier, took place.

According to one of the organisers, Mr Pierre Lemonde, Attaché for Science and Technology at the French Embassy in South Africa, ‘’the events will highlight Franco-South African scientific collaborations, promote future cooperation and student exchanges’’. He said the event took place in the context of an ever-increasing number of scientific articles co-published

by French and South African scientists, which numbered in excess of 200 over the last five years. Lemonde also indicated that South Africa is the fifth biggest scientific partner with France, with collaborations in different disciplines. He said the event was held on a rotational basis - it was held in South Africa this year and will be held in France next year.

According to Lemonde, eight South African universities are going to take part and Univen has been selected to host the first of a series of these festivi-

ties. “We are raising awareness among students and academics about what France has to offer.

We also want students and academics to know and understand each other,” he said.

Univen’s Cornelius Hagenmeier said they were honoured to have been chosen as the first among the South African universities to host the festivities.

“This shows that we are developing as a university and we are happy that our students will also have an opportunity to find out about opportunities to study abroad and about funding and scholarships abroad,” he said.

Oritonda Tshamano, a Bachelor of Environmental Sciences student, who participated in the festivities, said it had been an eye-opener for her.

“There are so many opportunities which are open for us as students which we did not know of. We learnt a lot and we now have a better understanding of what France has to offer. Those who did not have the chance to attend, missed a lot,” she said.

House destroyed by mysterious fire The large house of a DA councillor in the Greater Giyani Municipality, Mr Richard Shivambu, mysteriously burnt down last Thursday evening.

At the time of the incident, Shivambu was in Polokwane, as his pregnant wife had been admitted to the Polokwane MediClinic.

Shivambu said his wife’s sister was at home and she said she heard a bang in one of the rooms.

When she investigated, she found that it was on fire.

He said he lost everything in the house, including his clothes, food and all his furniture. “We managed to get food parcels from the local municipality so far. My children have nothing to wear when they go to school today,” he said.

The community in the Musina Municipality has tons of problems and issues which relate to the SAPS. People complained that the magumaguma (illegal immigrants who are dangerous criminals) terrorise the community by mugging people and accumulating wealth for themselves by theft. Magumaguma are said to be very dangerous, because when the victim refuses to give in, they either rape or kill them to prove their point. “People die among us,” said one resident. “The police are doing little to redeem crimes by magumaguma.”

Another comlaint was that feuding taxi associations abused commuters when they submitted grievances with the taxi association offices about misconduct of taxi drivers or taxi owners.

One resident said he knew of a taxi driver who had been involved in a rape case where the victim

was a minor. However, the case had not gone any further after the taxi association had bribed the police and the girl’s indigent mother. According to the speaker, nearly everyone who cared in Musina knew that the taxi association had subsequently built a two-roomed house for the girl’s mother.

Mpembe acknowledged all the complaints. “The issue of detectives’ not giving feedback makes me sick,” he said. “No police officer should tell a complainant that computers are off-line and that they cannot be assisted because of that.”

Safety, Security and Liason’s MEC Florence Radzilani said that one of her department’s duties was to promote a healthy relationship between the SAPS and communities.

She advised parents to monitor their children at all times, indicating that there were grownups out there who used young children to achieve their criminal goals.

Mayor Mutavhatsindi helps remove illegal posters The mayor of Makhado and his executive committee joined a church group on Saturday morning and removed hundreds of illegal posters in the central business area. The posters mostly advertised illegal abortions and scams such as cream to enlarge genitalia.

The project was initiated by the youth of the Dutch Reformed Church Soutpansberg’s congregation. The group felt that the posters that are stuck to lamp posts, traffic signs, dustbins and even electricity distribution boxes are not only offensive,

but also illegal. “These practices are driven by unscrupulous people who stay in the cities. They promote illegal abortion practices and have no regard for the many lives they destroy in the process,” says ds Rudolph Botha, the youth minister at the church.

According to ds Botha, the abortion posters simply refer people to a local “agent”, who will supply them with pills that will cause the unborn baby to be aborted. “These are not trained medical staff and they endanger the lives of the women who, out of desperation, make use of these illegal

services. They also do not provide counselling to the women to guide them through a difficult period in their lives,” he said.

“In order to promote their businesses, the people behind the illegal abortion practices print thousands of posters. These are sent all over the country for agents to stick to lamp posts and traffic signs. The only reference on the poster is a cell phone number, which means it is more difficult for the authorities to trace the culprits,” ds Botha explained.

Saturday morning’s project was also supported by members of the Tshitandani Care Foundation, an organisation that reaches out to homeless children. A number of the children joined the group and helped remove the posters.

The mayor of Makhado, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, expressed his thanks and appreciation to the church group for organising the project. He said it was touching to witness how people from the town could cross cultural barriers and join hands to fight a common cause. The mayor took it upon himself to make sure that the by-laws dealing with this type of criminality are enforced. It is illegal to put up posters in town without Council’s permission.

Ds Botha appealed to business owners in town also to assist by removing the illegal posters in front of their businesses. “If we all remove these offensive posters the moment someone puts them up, they will give up. It will be one or two people putting up posters and hundreds taking them down,” he said.

Muraleni United too good for All Stars Muraleni United beat Madodonga TAB All Stars 3-1 in the semifinal of the Siku tournament at the Madodonga grounds on Sunday.

The game started at a blistering pace, with the United side

being superior in terms of ball possession. Stars changed their original pattern and started to initiate moves from behind.

They did not reap anything from their efforts as it was not easy to find a way through the rock-

solid defence of United.

The team from Muraleni was awarded a place kick in the 19th minute. Percy Munyadziwa picked the ball from the kick and Shaka Muthambi, who was in the perfect scoring position, gave it the final touch.

United added another goal, this time through Nditsheni Farisani. He capitalised on Khuliso Mavhona’s defensive blunder, by leaving his post unguarded. Farisani sent in a rocket from within the penalty area, leaving the Stars’ keeper a flabbergasted man.

Early in the second half, Martin Mahuwa of Stars reduced the margin. He unleashed a powerful volley from Duncan the 25m area. The Maringa of home side played with United (left) and more enthusiasm in Marin Mahuwa the second half. Shaka of Stars, in a Muthambi completed tussle for the his brace and scored ball. his team’s third goal.

Praise for mother of Cultural Village Well-known traditionalist and senior traditional leader in Lwamondo village Thovhele Vho-Ndaedzo Nelwamondo praised Ms Livhuwani Ngwana of Nyavhumbwa wa Dagaila Cultural Village for her contribution in keeping the Venda culture alive.

He was addressing a cultural fair organised by Nyavhumbwa wa Dagaila Cultural Village.

The event was held at Rhema Kingdom Life on Women’s Day. The event was attended by the respective mayors of Thulamela, Makhado, Musina and Vhembe District.

The convener of the function and mother of Nyavhumbwa Wa Dagaila Cultural Village, Ms

Livhuwani Ngwana, said culture was fast fading away, especially among the youth. “As part of our Women’s Day celebrations, we felt it would be appropriate that we gather all women and young girls together, so that we celebrate who we are. We also want to urge the young folk to behave and have faith in themselves,” she added.

She said her organisation always thought of ways to keep their culture alive “and this is one way of showcasing our culture.

We want all to see that our culture is alive and is beautiful,” she said.

Ngwana said she was very happy that people came in their numbers to show that they supported culture in their commu-

nity. International speaker and the leader of Rhema Kingdom Life, Dr Tshifhiwa Muligwe, also addressed the gathering before leaving for a conference in Zimbabwe. He hailed Ngwana for the good work she was doing.

Senior traditional leader Chief Ndaedzo Nelwamondo commended Ngwana for the good work she was doing. He said he was worried that parents were no longer teaching their children good manners. He urged girls to remain focussed on their education and not fall into the temptation of having children at a young age.

Time is running out for teams who want to renew their Vhembe SAB League membership for the 2012/13 soccer season.

According to the chairman of the Vhembe Regional League competition committee, Mr Mulimisi Muneri, teams have until next Friday (31 August), to register for the coming season.

The registration fee is still R4 500 for both old and new teams.

Muneri stated that failure to register by the end of business on 31 August would imply that the affected teams had dismissed themselves from the league. He also said that, unlike the previous season, when they had 134 teams, the number would increase to 146 if all the teams managed to beat the registration deadline.

He reminded the teams of the league’s rules and regulations, which dictate that a team is allowed to register a maximum of five players over the age of 23 years.

According to him, the 146 teams will be divided into nine streams. Just like last season, the league champions from each stream will play in the regional play-offs to determine the overall winner.

The overall champions will represent the region in the provincial play-offs to determine the two

Man (55) in court on arson charge The Mphephu police opened a case of arson after a 55-yearold man allegedly set a house alight in Rabali in the Nzhelele area last Saturday (18 August).

According to the police statement, the complainant, Vho-Leah Nevhutalu (60), was dancing at home with her husband, Azwindini Alfred Masithulela.

Masithulela allegedly asked Nevhutalu to bring him another

cup of mutomboti (sorghum beer). She returned with some mutomboti for him and went to look at their grandchild in another room.

A few minutes later, she smelt smoke and suspected that it came from Masithulela's room. She then went over to investigate and found his room on fire.

While Nevhutalu was waking up all the family members in the

Rockers FC win final of Kharipfane Rockers gave Mpheni Home Defenders a Saturday to remember, when they crushed them 4-1 in the final of the Kharipfane tournament, played at Madombidzha.

The boys from Sibasa started the match with a bang, scoring two goals within the first 25 minutes. Emmanuel Neswiswi scored the first goal of his team after a scramble within the

box. He was on target again 12 minutes later. Simon Makhado dished a beautiful pass to Neswiswi, who gave the ball the final touch.

Rockers enjoyed their 2-0 lead until the end of the first half. The centre half of Rockers, Patrick Muthivhi, went into the referee’s book for obstruction on Ronny Lisoga six minute minutes into the last half. Defenders nearly hit the target in the 47th minute, but Rockers’ keeper, Ndivhuwo Musie, palmed Mpho Matumba’s volley away for a corner kick.

Is football still “the beautiful game?”

A soccer match between Tshiombo Try Again and Muhuyu XI Experience nearly ended in chaos, after a fistfight developed between fans and players.

The game started as a spectacle, with players of both teams

performing well. The score was one goal each in the second half, when a fistfight tainted the whole game.

“The reason why I sold Happy Boys” After unsuccessful attempts by this newspaper to contact officials from Miluwani Happy Boys Club for comment regarding the sale of the club’s SAB League franchise to Tshifulanani Crystal Palace last week, the former MD of the team, Mr Mmboneni Phanguphangu, reacted this week.

Phanguphangu stated that he had had no intention of selling the club’s status, but circumstances beyond his control compelled him to do that. He singled out the internal struggle for ownership of the team as the only reason which caused him to get rid of

the franchise.

He reiterated the fact that he was alone when he established the club eight years ago. He stated that he could not say no when two local men approached him and pledged their voluntary services to the team two years down the line. According to him, things went well during those years and consequently the team was promoted to the Super Division of the Thulamela Local Football Association. That was where they campaigned for two seasons before gaining promotion to the SAB League.

According to him, things

turned upside down at the end of last season when his colleagues "started to take advantage of his poor level of education".

He revealed that it soon became clear to him that the two men had the intention of taking over full ownership of the team. “Realizing that I was going to lose everything if I did not act swiftly, I quickly sold the club’s franchise to Tshifulanani Crystal Palace."

Phanguphangu, or Zidane as he was also known during his days as a soccer player, said that he would soon establish another club because football was part of his life.

Elderly to hold “Golden Games” The Vhembe District Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Health, the Department of Sport Arts and Culture and the Department of Social Development, has organised the “Golden Games” for elderly people above 60 years.

The games will be held today (24 August) at the Tshifulanani Stadium and will start at 08:00.

According to the media liaison officer of the Thulamela Municipality, Mr Moses Shibambu, the elderly will participate in “sporting codes” such as duck walk, dress-up, goal shooting, pegging washing pegs, athletics, passing the ball and ring the stick.

The regional activities will proceed to the provincial games in Polokwane and then to the national competition at Rustenburg in the North West Province.

According to Shibambu, the games serve to create awareness and encouragement for elderly Black Leopards recently appointed Mr Yu Lu people to engage in regular physical activities. as their new physiotherapist.

The new kids on the block, Matangari Rising Stars, started their campaign in Stream H of the Super League with a 3-2 victory against Tshipako Hot Spurs. The game was played at Matangari on Saturday and was Stars’ first league match. There was no team in the area, until when Aifheli Rakuambo, a former soccer player himself, decided to form the team. “I am happy that we started our league campaign with a victory. Basel win soccer challenge FC Basel are the champions of the Malamulele Soccer Challenge. They beat Giyani Hotspurs 1-0 in the final of the one-day event at the Malamulele Stadium on Sunday.

Hotspurs made their intentions clear from the onset. They initiated some telling passes from behind, making it difficult for their opponents to settle in the middle of the park.

Basel did not panic, despite all the odds; instead, they took their time to study their opponents’ moves.

Giyani Hotspurs beat Phungo All Stars 2-0 in the first semifinal, while Basel’s way to the final went via Rospa United, whom they beat 3-1 in their semi.
