D

it is treffend hoe ‘n uiters belangrike rol hoop in elke Christen se lewe speel. God se roeping is onberoulik. - Ds. Musina/Tshipise road a real danger By Bernard Chiguvare

Motorists using the R508 road between Musina and Tshipise daily are calling on the Musina Municipality to fix the damage caused by the recent good rains at a low-water bridge about 14km from Musina. Sections of the tarred road have been washed away by flood waters, causing a danger to motor ists. Water is supposed to run under the bridge, but this passage is blocked by sand and debris. Speaking to the Zoutpansberger, Mr Tony O’Callaghan, a motorist from Tshipise working in Musina, said: “The municipality has to attend to this as a matter of urgency, because you might get a person who does not know that the road has been damaged and that could cause a nasty accident. I am especially worried about the school children from Tshipise who travel on the road by school bus.” Not far down the road, workers from the De partment of Roads were spotted repairing some Sections of the tarred road have been washed away by flood waters, causing a danger to motorpotholes. “A lot of the potholes along this road ists. Not far from the N1, at Musina Mall, is Harper road, heading towards Kembo township. Here, two 18yearold boys took it upon themselves to do road maintenance. They use gravel and fill potholes that have been left unattended for a long time. The two, Lucky Lefuka and Deon Mutavhatsi na, have allocated themselves places where they maintain the road. “I neither have a birth certificate nor an ID and this makes my life difficult. My parents are separated. Neither of them is willing to look after me. In August this year, I decided to move from my rural village to Musina town in search of work. I could not get employment, but I noted the state of the Harper road and I thought of filling in potholes with sand, so that motorists could travel safely,” said Lefuka. Removal of Yellow Fever trees at Makhado Crossing causes outrage

Hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede in die

Zoutpansberger

Rozanna Spence from Louis Trichardt sent in the following open letter to the management of the Makhado Crossing:

around the world – and also keep soil moist and reduce the risk of flooding. A recent study suggested that planting trees is ‘the best climate change solution available today’. There is an 8 000 km wall of trees being built in Africa - making it the largest living structure on the planet once it’s finished. The wall aims to spread across the width of Africa and through more than 20 countries including Senegal, Nigeria and Ethiopia. A decade on from its launch, the wall is currently 15% complete, with 11.4 million trees planted in Senegal alone. In Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, more than 2 million seeds have been planted from over 50 different species of trees. Elsewhere in the continent, Gabon has become the first African country to receive international funds to preserve its rainforest.” The above is an extract from an article written by Manish Pandey and published on the website www.bbc.com on the 24th September 2019. world to plant trees? Having said that, I must register my dismay with the management of Makhado Crossing Mall and your decision to remove the indigenous Yellow Fever trees that have graced the parking lot of the centre since it was first built some years ago. These mature trees offered shade and added to the beauty of the area in general and to the centre in particular. To add insult to injury, I found out that the reasoning for the removal of said trees is that “apparently it is obstructing the view of the mall”. To destroy a thing of beauty and value for the cosmetic purpose of viewing a block of concrete and steel beggars belief. The residents of Louis Trichardt take great pride in our trees and your ill-advised actions will not go down well. I, for one, will be loathe to patronise your new development.

Two suspects arrested after carcasses of pregnant cows are found in minibus Crime Two suspects were arrested for stock theft after they were found in possession of three carcasses of heavily pregnant Bonsmara cows. The incident happened in Musina in the early hours of Sunday, and the value of the stolen cattle is estimated to be about R60 000.

The arrests were effected during an operation conduct ed by the Musina Stock Theft Unit and local farmers. The team followed information to a farm on the outskirts of Musina and recovered the slaughtered animals loaded inside a white Toyota Quatum. The provincial police’s spokesperson, Brig Motlafe la Mojapelo, said that the

suspects, aged 27 and 35, were facing charges of stock theft and possession of stolen meat. Meanwhile, thte provincial commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lt-Gen Nneke Ledwaba, commended the stock-theft unit members for their endless efforts to curb stock-theft incidents that are a threat to the national economy and food security.

ID confusion for those born outside country remains By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Many people, not just the odd few, seem to be affected by Home Affairs’ unexplained arrangement that people who were born outside the country can only get an ID re-issued in designated offices, which are mostly in outlying villages. A local couple, Ms Gail and Mr Alistair May tham arrived in South Africa in 1973. They were granted citizenship status around 1979 – forty years ago. They worked for the Department of Education as teachers and then as teacher trainers for more than 20 years. Now they have been struggling to get their tattered ID books re-issued. “In 2016, we visited the Home Affairs office in Louis Trichardt to apply for passports since they were due for renewal,” Ms Gail Maytham said. “We had previously heard a lot of stories that

most Home Affairs offices were inefficient and slow in all services. But we were greeted by the kind of quality services that were a rarity in most government offices.” However, they were in for some disappoint ment when they returned to the Home Affairs office this year to apply for the new smart card IDs. “The officials said we were not eligible for the new smart card IDs as neither of us was born in SA,” she said. “When we asked why, they said that parliament hadn’t passed an act to allow people born out of the country to have new smart card IDs. They didn’t help us, and neither did they explain what we should do. I was so disappointed.” She added that she later learnt, and not from officials, that she had to go to apply for a re-issue of her ID in some office in an outlying area. “This whole thing is ridiculous because this kind of system is not helpful to us,” she said. “We must be treated the same as other all other South African citizens. It doesn’t make sense. This system is not flexible enough and I am certain that there are many, many South African citizens in the same situation coun trywide.” She stated that the department must be informative enough, to the extent that all people within the country know what to do if they needed to apply for an ID book re-issue. “I cannot just drive from town to a village that is situated some distance away, without first calling that office to find out where it is situated and if I would

find the right officials to assist on that particular day,” she said. “When someone is turned down when applying for the smart card, they should be handed a notice with details of where to apply for the replacement green ID book and phone numbers of officials to contact.” “I don’t even have any desire to be in the newspaper, but this kind of problem – which I assume many people are going through – is real ly unacceptable and the government should deal with the discriminatory legislation,” she said. Department of Home Affairs’ provincial man ager, Mr Albert Matsaung, said that he would contact the Maythams and ensure that they were assisted. However, as another part of the story, Mat saung said that the department had introduced smart-card ID facilities to most of their offices and all offices that had those facilities were no longer offering the green barcoded ID book. “This only means that [any person who needs a re-issue of an ID book] has to use the services of any nearest office that still offers a green, bar coded ID book,” he said. More information about the offices that still offer the green barcoded ID Ms Gail Maytham says Home Affairs offices book is available at any Home Affairs office upon should provide full, directory information to request. ID applicants.

• One-way traffic flow with 24 hour STOP/GO traffic control will however be encountered between Km 66.20 and Km 67.4 due to the improvements to an existing bridge and the half width construction of a new bridge across the Middle Letaba River respectively. As a result of this, speed limits of up to 30km/hr will be implemented along this particular section of the road. This will lead to travel time delays within that section of the road both during the day and at night. Travellers are advised to be patient and exercise extreme caution when travelling along this particular section of the road. This isa work zone area and there are workers present whose safety is of paramount importance. • Appropriate signage will be in place and all road users are requested and advised to take note of the signage displayed over this period. • Blasting works are also scheduled to take place along the mountain pass section of the road. During blasting, the road will be closed for a duration of time due to safety implications. Due to the expected congestion and travel time delays along the section of the road, SANRAL recommends those road users, and in particular, heavy trucks and buses consider making use of alternative routes. SANRAL regrets the inconvenience caused during this period of road improvement and thanks all travellers in advance for their co-operation and patience.

Fred was eweneens stomgeslaan. Foto’s verskaf.

Local cricket talent in Impala team The Soutpansberg is very proud of two of its talented young cricket players, Gerhardus Fourie (left) and Dewald Swanepoel, for being selected for the Limpopo Impala rural cricket team. Dewald is captain of Louis Trichardt’s first cricket team, while Gerhardus is still a student at Merensky High School. The two cricketers formed part of the Impala rural team that competed in the Rural League in Potchefstroom the past week. Photo supplied. Sheryl does South Africa proud managers are very excited about Sheryl’s going to her next event in Tokyo and beyond. “I think she is exhausted. Being such a newbie at all this and still managing to keep her composure all the time … she is my hero. Thanks to everyone who has been there for her all the way. All glory to the Lord for his Grace and favour that has enabled

By Andries van Zyl

her to do this,” said Sandy. This year alone, Sheryl was nominated as a finalist in the Gsport Awards for women that took place at the Wanderers Club in Johan nesburg on 31 August. Sheryl was one of three finalists in the category for athlete of the year with disability.

Sheryl’s sprinting career only started last year in about September. She got involved in parasport and has done very well, with a couple of gold medals in Dubai and Sao Paulo running the 100m, 200m and 400m. Before that, she ran long distances and did the Comrades three times.

Local para-athlete Sheryl James did not only do the Soutpansberg proud, but the whole of South Africa by securing a bronze medal for the country during the World Para-Athletics Championships that took place in Dubai from 7 to 15 November. Sheryl formed part of the squad of 35 athletes and officials who flew the South African flag during this year’s World ParaAthletics Cham pionships, competing in the T37 category for athletes with coordination impairments. Sheryl is hemiplegic, with impaired muscle functionality on the right side of her body. She was born cerebral palsied because of a lack of oxygen supply to a small spot on her brain. She has, however, not allowed this physical challenge to prevent her from participating in strenuous sporting disciplines, and her vision is to help enable others who have any form of physical or emotional challenge to realize that they are able to reach far higher goals than society or they themselves may have given them hope for. Sheryl ran a personal best time of 01:05.34 in the T37 400m heat for women during the World Champs. She followed this up with a time of 1:06.06 in the final of the event, securing South Africa a bronze medal. In the 100m heat in the same category, Sheryl also ran a personal best time of 13,67 seconds, eventually finishing sixth in 13,73 seconds in the final of the event. She also ran her personal best in the 200m event, finishing the heat in 27,98 seconds and going on to finish fifth in the final in a time of 28,12 seconds. Apart from running her personal best times in the 100m and 200m, she also set new African records in the 100m and 200m in her category.
