SEZ in motion

The government is obviously wasting no time in getting the ball rolling for the establishment of the Musina Makhado SEZ. Farm owners bordering the proposed development site received notice this week of an application for an environmental authorisation (EA) and a change of land use.

Spearheading the project is the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA), who has appointed Delta Built Environment Consultants (Delta BEC) to undertake the EA and the change of land use.

The SEZ will be located on an 8 000ha piece of restituted land near Mopane. The area stretches from the railway line in the west to the N1 in the east, between the Huntleigh turn-off in the south and the Mopane turn-off in the north.

According to the notice to farmers, the main strategic objective of the LEDA is to accelerate industrial diversification through strategic economic development interventions.

The notice states that the metallurgical cluster zone of the SEZ’s primary focus will be the beneficiation of minerals endowed in the Vhembe District and its neighbouring areas.

“Coking coal and other minerals, which are key inputs into the steel and iron production process, will be part of the upstream and downstream value-adding process, in line with the country’s national industrialisation objectives and mineral beneficiation

strategy. Other land uses envisaged to complement the energy and metallurgical complex will comprise bulk infrastructure, light industries, intermodal facilities, housing, retail centres, business uses, community facilities and telecommunication services. The zone will generate job opportunities for the unskilled, semiskilled and skilled labour market,” states the notice.

Over the last couple of weeks, much has been said in the media about the planned Musina Makhado SEZ and the lucrative deal the South African Government struck with the Chinese regarding the development of the SEZ. Part of the development also includes the building of a 4600MW coal-fired power plant, with MC Mining standing in line to start delivering coal to the plant.

The process has, however, not been without controversy. One such controversy is a local farmer’s refusal to allow MC Mining access to the rich coal reserves on two of his farms, the farms Lukin 643 MS and Salaita 188 MT. The farmer is Mr Johan Steenkamp of Akkerland Boerderye. He made international news headlines a couple of weeks ago when the government announced that they were going to expropriate the farms Lukin and Salaita as part of a test case. The reason given was that all negotiations had apparently broken down between Akkerland Boerderye and the government regarding the selling of the farms as part of a land claim by the Musekwa community.

Speculation is rife, however, that the real reason for the government’s wanting to expropriate the farms is because of the billions of rands of coal deposits on the two farms - coal that will be needed to power the proposed SEZ power plant.

The Minister of Rural Development and Land reform was dealt a severe blow last week when the Land Claims Court

of South Africa ruled that the government had not followed procedure when they gave notice to expropriate the farms Lukin and Salaita. The court ruled on 12 September that the minister should withdraw his Notice of Expropriation, dated 19 March 2018, with immediate effect.

The court also ruled that it be declared that ownership of the farms Lukin and

Salaita revert to Akkerland Boerderye with immediate effect. The Minister and the regional land claims commissioner of Limpopo were also slapped with a cost order against them for the costs incurred

by Akkerland Boerderye as first applicant to fight the expropriation.

Inwoners van die Soutpansberg het Maan­ dagmiddag met groot hartseer gereageer op die skoknuus dat die welbekende mnr. Stefan “Bossie” Boshoff (71) sy eie lewe geneem het.

“Ek weet regtig nie wat daartoe aanleiding gegee het nie. Hy was daardie oggend nog by my en ons het lekker gesels,” het wyle Stefan se ouer broer, George (ook bekend as Bossie), Woensdag aan die Zoutpansberger gesê.

Wyle Stefan is op 21 Augustus 1947 in Kenia gebore. Sy familie sou later na Suid-Afrika verhuis, met Stefan wat sy skoolloopbaan by Hoërskool Louis Trichardt voltooi het.

“Hy het vir jare by Venetia Myn gewerk waar hy aanvanklik as passer en draaier begin het en hom later opgewerk het tot omgewingsbeampte. In daardie tyd het hy in Musina gebly en was hy dus ook daar welbekend,” het George gesê.

Ná sy aftrede het Stefan hom op Louis Trichardt gevestig, waar hy homself as nutsman besig gehou

Steenkamp said earlier this week that they welcomed the judgement but added that, although they had won this battle, the war was far from over. He was referring to the persistent attempts by different communities to claim his farms. Steenkamp said that their next course of action would be to file court documents against the Kuvules’ land claim.

“We also received a letter from MC Mining about two weeks ago that they want to come in and start mining. Last Friday, however, we submitted court papers opposing their mineral and water license.

No job is too small for Hi-Per Steelworks in Louis Tri­ chardt, which opened its doors in January this year.

This is a family business, run by father-and-sons trio Niel (senior), Niel (junior) and Nellis Botma.

“Our aim is to cater for the average man on the street who needs to get small steelworks done. We are not going to go into large constructions,” said Niel senior.

The business boasts an impressive array of machinery to enable them to do welding, pipe bending, rebar bending and cutting, sandblasting, powder coating and CNC plasma

cutting. “Our CNC machine is one of the best currently available locally, able to cut up to 40 mm thick metal. Cutting is also done on a waterbed, which limits harmful gasses cooling down the sheet metal, so that it does not warp. We can cut out anything you want out of a piece of steel,” said Niel senior.

Hi-Per Steelworks’ list of products, among others, includes the manufacturing of “cattle railings” for bakkies and small trucks, burglar bars for window, security gates and much more. This is all done to the customer’s specifications.

“We even do repairs on trailers and have a press on site for pushing out problematic bearings,” said Niel senior.

The company can also do aluminium welding on things such as engine blocks and trucks’ broken diesel pumps.

As for the sandblasting, HiPer Steelworks can at present only do smaller projects. Regarding power coating, they have two power-coating ovens.

The small one can handle items up to the size of a bulbar, while bakkie railings fit easily into the bigger oven.

Hi-Per Steelworks is open for business from Mondays to Fridays from 08:00 until 17:00 and Saturdays from 08:00 until 13:00.

The Paint Pot, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this month, has recently expanded into Vhembe.

The Paint Pot’s story begins on 16 September 1988 when hus­b and and wife Chris and Lana Muller opened their first store in Peace Street, Tzaneen, and moved from Polokwane to Tzaneen to manage the store.

They started off by selling several different products, such as gas, paraffin en general hardware, but their main product has always been paint. They have since grown by leaps and bounds, today boasting stores in Polokwane, Giyani and even in Midrand. Chris and Lana’s son, Anton, has since joined the family business in 1993. The company is now run by Anton and his mother after Chris unfortunately passed away a couple of years ago.

Gentleman Ronnie Roux passes away at age 92 In Memoriam

The Soutpansberg has lost another of its true gentlemen with the passing away of the 92-year-old Mr Ronnie Roux on Saturday, 15 September.

Ronald Peter (Ronnie) Roux was born on 27 January 1926 in Benoni on the East Rand where his father was an engineer. He attended Springs High School where he played excellent rugby. All his life he supported the former Transvaal rugby team, but later the Lions.

After his marriage to wife Zoë, the couple moved to Northern Rhodesia for about 10 years before they returned to South Africa and settled in Louis Trichardt.

Most of his life, Ronnie was involved in the cotton industry and later became the CEO of Anglo America’s “Cotona” operations in the then Northern Transvaal. He also served on the board of the then Venda Development Corporation.

Ronnie and Zoë were married on 9 July 1949 and were happily married for more than 65 years. They

had two daughters, Debra and Theresa.

One of the things Ronnie was best known for was his role as active member of both the local Rotary Club, as well as the Freemason Lodge.

Ronnie joined the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club in 1966, where he was a respected member until his death. He served as the club’s president from 1970 to 1971. In 1998, Ronnie was awarded the Paul Harris Award for excellent service to the community by Rotary International. Zoë was a devoted member of the Rotary Anns and also received her Paul Harris Award in 2008.

During Ronnie’s 52 years as Rotarian, he served the community in all the Rotary’s avenues of service where he always had a helping hand for the needy. “He was a gentleman to all who crossed his path and stood by Zoë for many years during her illness, until she passed away on 2 August 2015.

Sadly, Ronnie could never let go of his feelings for the wife he loved so dearly until his death,” said fellow Louis Trichardt Rotarian Johan Gilfillan.

When the couple celebrated their 65th anniversary in 2015, Ronnie was asked what the secret was to a happy marriage. “Love and respect. Actually, caring love and respect. It is the caregiving that counts,” he responded.

Johan added that Ronnie had lived the four-way test of the Rotary movement in his life, namely: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? and Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

“The Ronnie legend will be missed by all, especially his family, friends, the Rotarians and Flora, who looked after Zoë and Ronnie for so many years,” said Johan.

Ronnie passed away at the Masonic Haven in Pretoria where he had moved only recently. He was there for about two months.

A memorial service for the late Ronnie Roux will be held at the Masonic Haven chapel in Pretoria on 2 October.

Helicopter makes crash landing during annual SAAF demonstration

An Atlas Oryx M-1 (SA-330) helicopter from Air Force Base Hoedspruit’s 19 Squadron was damaged in a crash landing during the South-African Air Force’s (SAAF) annual air-capability demonstration at the Roodewal Bombing range outside Polokwane on Tuesday.

Air Force Base Makhado annually forms part of the demonstration. The exact cause of the crash landing, which occurred during a demonstration right in front of visiting dignitaries and members of the public, is being investigated.

The spokesperson for the SAAF, Colonel Eugene Motati, stated afterwards that they were thankful that only one minor ankle injury had

been reported. He emphasised that they were very happy with the reaction of the aircrew and the way that they had controlled the aircraft.

“It could have been a lot worse if not correctly handled,” he said. He concluded that they would now await the findings of the board of inquiry.

Once the dust cleared after the crash landing, it became clear that the Oryx had sustained severe damage. The tail boom had broken off at the attachment point to the fuselage. Yet the helicopter remained upright at landing, and the troops exited as had been planned for the demonstration.

ie kruis van Christus het ál die verskil in Paulus se lewe gemaak. Slegs deur die kruis waar hy met Christus gesterf het, kon hy en kan ons ook sekere dinge afsterf, soos die sonde wat hom verlam en besoedel het en die wet wat hom veroordeel het, waarvan hy op geen ander manier verlos kon word nie (Rom. 6:1; Rom. 7:6). Bid tot God dat die Heilige Gees jou ‘n groter openbaring van die dieper betekenis van die verlossingskrag van die kruis sal gee. Dit sal jou intiemer en teerder aan jou Verlosser verbind.

God wys ons deur die kruis, in die lig van sy heiligheid en geregtigheid, wat sonde werklik is. Daarom sê Paulus later: “...om sondaars te red, van wie ek die vernaamste is” (1 Tim. 1:15). God het Paulus gered en geroep met ‘n heilige roeping (2 Tim. 1:9).

As jy goed en lank genoeg, eerbiedig en dankbaar genoeg na die kruis bly kyk, sal jy meer soos Hy word sonder dat jy selfs eens daarvan bewus is.

Slegs in die lig van die kruis leer ons werklik vir Jesus ken as die vlekkelose Lam van God, die volmaakte Verlosser van sonde.

Hy wat met sy “onskuldige bloed” (Matt.

27:4) en “kosbare bloed” (1 Pet. 1:19) ‘n volmaakte vrykoping, vryspraak, versoening en vrymaking bewerk het. Hy kan waarlik vrymaak, want Hy leef! Slegs deur die kruis kon God sy groot en goddelike liefde aan ons bewys (Rom. 5:8). As God verklaar: “Ek het julle liefgehad…” hoef jy nie soos Israel eers te vra: “Waarin het U ons liefgehad?” nie (Maleagi 1:2). Want jy sal “die waarheid ken, en die waarheid sal jou vrymaak” (Joh. 8:33).

Die jongste boek uit die pen van plaaslike skrywer dr. Philip Venter, Don­ kerland, is vanaf 14 September op die winkelrakke beskikbaar.

Donkerland is die vierde aflewering in ‘n reeks oor die gewapende stryd in Suid-Afrika. Die reeks begin met Venter se boek Niemandsland, wat handel oor die onluste van 1985. Dié skrywe is opgevolg met Venter se boek Bloedland, wat ‘n toekoms scenario skets van Suid-Afrika indien die land in duie stort. Swerwersland is die opvolg op Bloedland, met ‘n boer as hoofkarakter wie se familie uitgewis word te midde van ‘n land wat in duie stort.

Donkerland bou voort op die scenario van ‘n land wat verval, maar dié keer is die hoofkarakter ‘n vrou, Retha Duncan.

Lack of action and equipment a dangerous recipe

Last Thursday, cable thieves purposely burnt down some electricity poles east of Leeu Street in Louis Trichardt, which then ignited runaway fires in the bush in the Ridgeway smallholding area.

DA Ward Councillor for Louis Trichardt Mr Brian du Plooy said that the thieves had been after the conductors at the top of the poles.

The fires were doused on Thursday but reignited the following day. Du Plooy and local farmer Ian Mc Donald reported that the fire department used only “bakkie-bed fire-fighting” equipment as no operational fire engine was available.

In the light of a further report from Ms Carika Steyn of Louis Trichardt, who reported an incident that occurred on 14 September outside the cemetery in Malherbe Street, the Zoutpansberger reached out to Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) spokesperson Mr Matodzi Ralushai for information regarding the availability of a fire truck and safety equipment for Louis Trichardt, but at the time of our going to press had received no reply.

A fire had been purposely lit on the ground outside the cemetery fence, which then jumped and set an electricity box alight. Ms Steyn phoned the fire department to report the fire, but they did not arrive at all. The fire in the box blazed away and it eventually exploded. Well over an hour later, municipal workers arrived and asked onlookers for a fire extinguisher as they did not have anything with them to quell the flames. Eventually, the fire was extinguished without the fire department’s ever arriving.

Du Plooy reported that when he contacted the municipality on Friday, and again on multiple occasions on Saturday, with requests to begin emergency work on restoring power to the area affected by the Ridgeway fires, municipal workers informed him, as well as those people affected by the outage who were phoning in, that permission had to be obtained from the director to do the work required after hours, and that permission had been declined as there was no “budget allocated for pay-

ing workers overtime”. Du Plooy was told that the work would therefore have to wait until Monday.

Du Plooy informed the newspaper that the burntdown electricity poles constituted an emergency situation in which work should have been carried out after hours to restore power, regardless of budgets for overtime. He could not understand or explain the municipality’s refusal to do the work on the grounds of a lack of budget for overtime pay. Without power, no water could be pumped, and Du Plooy said that the huge personal losses sustained by the farmers in the area because of this one particular incident had been wholly unjustified.

He said he failed to see how the municipality could continue in this fashion. Du Plooy added that the municipality was clearly incapable of doing the work required of it, and that the culture of their lying to the public and the public’s accepting this behaviour had been going on for much too long.

Local farmer Mr Ian Mc Donald said that he was shocked when he heard firefighters reply affirmatively to Du Plooy’s questioning regarding the fact that their fire engine was not working. He felt appalled at the lack of resources available to them at this point in the year. Du Plooy stated that a high risk for dangerous fires currently existed in Limpopo Province, and for this municipality to have adequate firefighting vehicles and safety equipment was therefore imperative. “Our firefighters run high enough risks in the line of duty, and for the municipality to place them in greater danger by failing to supply and maintain the basic resources that they require to save lives and property is nothing short of criminal,” said Du Plooy. He said that these municipalities (Makhado and VDM) kept on failing the people in their jurisdiction in every way.

On Tuesday, Mc Donald informed the Zoutpansberger that his electricity had still not been restored.

“I’ve had to hire a generator now,” he said. “My own generator was overloaded, and I have 100 000 seedlings here that need to be watered. I’m just grateful that I have a reservoir, or they would be lost. Apart from power being restored briefly for a few hours on Friday before the fire reignited, this is our fifth day without being able to pump water,”

said McDonald.

The newspaper was able to confirm that work on restoring power to the affected area had only started on Monday morning with bush clearing and the digging of holes for the new poles. The supervisor on site said that he was unaware of any new rules regarding overtime as he had not been at work on Friday or over the weekend. Du Plooy said that in this current climate of lying by a municipality clearly either incapable of or unwilling to carry out vitally important work, residents should take as much care as they can to ensure their own safety and the safety of others.

Fire restrictions are in force at this time of the year, and people are required to exercise more caution than at other times of the year. Before the rains arrive, the grass is dry and extreme caution is advised with any open fires. People are encouraged to properly extinguish or dispose of anything that can ignite further and cause destructive and dangerous fires, and not to burn anything without proper safety precautions in place. While high

legal penalties await those who purposely make fires without regard for the safety and property of others, people are encouraged to use common sense when they can see that the land is dry and the rains still far away.

Local residents have been trying for years to get Vhembe Municipality to take their complaints about shoddy service and maintenance, especially when it comes to water delivery, seriously.

As reports of widespread municipal dysfunction come to light, the whole country now must face the fact that years of mismanagement and corruption have created a countrywide system of chaos in local governance.

Over the past few months, dozens of readers approached the Zoutpansberger, complaining about leaking water pipes or other water-supply-related problems. A common thread has been fear of reprisals of some sort. Residents very often do not want their names mentioned because they are afraid that the municipality will somehow take revenge on them for reporting the fact that they are not doing their job. DA ward councillor Brian du Plooy has recently commented that the way the municipality is currently operating is unsustainable.

He questioned their honesty and transparency, after they refused to begin emergency work on the repair of an essential service because “no budget to pay workers overtime” was available.

Should people be afraid of confronting their local municipality? Former ANC MP Dr Makhosi Khoza, speaking at an event hosted by the Centre for Constitutional Rights in August this year, questioned why South Africans are where they are. “We have become so corrupt and there is so much political meddling that some no longer care about the law,” she said. “That leads to even municipalities violating the law and leadership not condemning it.” Khoza joined the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA), headed by CEO Wayne Duvenage, on 1 June 2018. She said that people’s quality of life suffered when their taxes were misused. “We should take responsibility to hold municipalities accountable.”

Khoza stated that municipalities were currently not solving problems, they were just shifting these to consumers by increasing rates. She encouraged ratepayers, local businesses and ratepayer associations not to be isolated from giving their input in municipal ward committees. “Ward councillors should be directly accountable to the community.

Currently, ward committees are no longer an expression of a community. Ratepayers are paying for services for a municipality to be sustainable,” she said. “For that, you need ratepayers. Yet about 90% of ward committees are made up of indigent communities.”

The South African Constitution states that municipalities have the responsibility to make sure

that all citizens are provided with services to satisfy their basic needs. People trust their local government (municipal) departments to ensure that they receive adequate water supply, sewage collection and disposal, refuse removal, electricity supply, health services, municipal roads, street lighting, municipal parks and recreation. It states that “poor services contribute to the creation of unhealthy and unsafe living environments and can also make it difficult to attract business or industry to an area and will limit job opportunities for residents.”

The local municipality is the portion of the government tasked with providing the services the population are entitled to. Municipalities can either supply these services themselves or outsource them for reasonable charges, but either way the responsibility is theirs to see that people get them, barring occasional and understandable problems.

Regardless, the population generally expects steady, if sometimes slow, improvement from the people they elected to serve them in this capacity.

Taxpayers in Louis Trichardt have been complaining for years about not only the lack of regular supply of basic services, but of rudeness and the highhanded and often even intimidating behaviour of municipal officials when asked for assistance.

People have been understanding of the problems as related to them by municipal workers, such as infrastructure problems as a result of age. This is reasonable to people as they are also aware of the fact that the infrastructure is very old. What they are only now beginning to ask is why, if it is so very old, it has not been replaced. Using a lack of funds as the reason for this holds no water when the budgeted-for money has been a matter of public record for the past few years.

A municipality in South Africa is an instrument of the people. The people who work there are public servants. Public servants are those who receive their pay from the government. The government runs on money sourced from the public, mainly from taxes, so in the end, the people paying public servants’ wages are the public. Public servants include law-enforcement officers, mayors, SASSA employees, employees at public hospitals and clinics, and everyone behind the counters at the municipality.

“Municipalities must ensure services are delivered in a sustainable manner. That is very important.

And they must be held accountable. Local service delivery should not be highly politicised. It is about survival and basic needs, not politics,” said Khoza.

Local municipalities are paid for by citizens’ tax money, and citizens are entitled to demand service for their payments or, at the very least, to be given explanations as to why their money is being used inappropriately.

These were the words of Dr Zweli Mkhize, the Minister of Cooperative Governance, Housing Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta).

Mkhize said he would work with his team to give the necessary support to MLM. “Assistance does not only come in the form of finance. Where we cannot source finance, we will make sure that we connect you with the relevant stakeholders.”

Mayor Mihloti Muhlope touched on the strategic advantages of the municipality, challenges and proposed interventions, proposed projects and costs, urgent needs of the municipality and recommendations on how the municipality can be assisted.

She said the municipality had the potential to grow, based on its stable political environment.

“The municipality is situated on the busiest border post in the sub-Saharan area and is the second busiest port of entry in Africa after OR Tambo.

Venetia Mine is the largest producer of diamonds in South Africa. There is also a suitable landing strip in Musina that can be turned into an international airport. The world heritage site of Mapungubwe is found in Musina. These are just a few things that consolidate our potential for growth.”

Met die somer op hande sien die streek se hengelaars weer daarna uit om ‘n paar blinklywe te land. In Limpopo is goeie hengelwater maar bietjie beperk en moet daar dikwels ver gery word om lekker te hengel. Een so ‘n gewilde “ver” dam is die Tzaneendam. Verlede Saterdag het die dorp se AfriForum-tak ‘n skoonmaakprojek by die dam gehou. Die doel van die skoonmaakaksie was om vullis in en rondom die dam, asook onwettige visvangnette uit die dam te verwyder. Dié projek is in samewerking met Letaba Bassmasters, lede van natuurbewaring en ander gemeenskapsorganisasies op die dorp aangepak. Agt bote en nagenoeg dertig vrywilligers uit die gemeenskap het saamgewerk om nette uit die dam te haal, asook die gebied rondom die dam skoon te maak. Die gesamentlike hoeveelheid vullis wat opgeruim is het ’n groot munisipale stortbak opgevul.

APPLICATION FOR A MINING RIGHT AND ACCOMPANYING ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORISATION, WASTE MANAGEMENT LICENCE AND WATER USE LICENCE FOR THE PROPOSED OPENCAST AND UNDERGROUND COAL MINING OPERATION AT CYGNUS 549MS, LIMPOPO PROVINCE INVITATION TO REGISTER AND PARTICIPATE Notice is hereby given in terms of Section 22 of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 (Act 28 of 2002) (MPRDA) as amended by Section 18 of Act 49 of 2008, the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act 107 of 1998) (NEMA), National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act 59 of 2008) (NEM: WA) and the National Water Act, 1998 (Act 36 of 1998) (NWA), that Universal Coal Development V (Pty) Ltd (UCDV) is applying for a Mining Right and associated Environmental Authorisation (EA), Waste Management Licence (WML) and Water Use Licence (WUL) for coal mining on Farm Cygnus 549 MS in the Limpopo Province.

UCDV was granted a Prospecting Right (LP30/5/1/1/2/1276PR) over the Cygnus 549 MS property, and is currently applying for a mining right in respect of Coal mining at the property. The project triggers activities listed in terms of Listing Notices 1 (Activities 12 and 24) and Listing Notice 2 (Activities 7, 16, 17 and 21) and Listing Notice 3 (Activities 4, 10, 12 and 14) of the NEMA (as amended) and will require an EA from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), Limpopo Province. The proposed stock pile and dump areas or hard and soft material will trigger activities listed in GNR 921 (Category B: Activities 7, 8 and 10) of the NEM: WA and therefore requires a WML from the DMR. A full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) including Scoping and Impact Assessment will be followed as stipulated in GNR 982 of the NEMA and GNR921 of the NEM: WA. The proposed mine also requires a WUL for water uses as defined in Section 21 of the National Water Act, 1998 (Act 36 of 1998) (NWA). The water uses to be applied for include Section 21 (a), (c) & (i), (g) and 21 (j).

The mine will be developed as follows • • •

One opencast block will be mined for a period of eight years by using the truck and shovel opencast method of mining; Once opencast reserves have been depleted (after an expected mining period of eight years), an underground mining operation will be implemented; and Three proposed waste dump sites, one each for topsoil, soft waste material and hard waste material, will be utilised in order to minimise the hauling of overburden material over excessive distances.

The Life of Mine (LOM) for Cygnus is approximately 12 years.

Most of the required mine infrastructure for the Project Area will be established on the LP30/5/1/1/2/376PR Prospecting Right area and will be located on the farm Matsuri 358MS on the southern side of the Cygnus Project Area.

Vir die eerste keer in die geskiedenis van Laerskool Messina se Graad 7 fietstoer na Tshipise is die “resies” deur ‘n meisie gewen. Meisies maak geskiedenis tydens 40ste fietstoer

Nog een van Laerskool Louis Trichardt se jong fietsrytalente, Jessica Taylor, het ná af­ loop van die jaarlikse SPUR XCO-skoleliga vir laerskole haar provinsiale kleure in die sportsoort verwerf. Sy het in die sub-junior afdeling vir laerskoolmeisies deelgeneem.

Sy mag dalk klein wees, maar sy weet hoe om ‘n fiets te trap ... Laerskool Louis Trichardt se jong Cara Bruce het ná afloop van die laaste van die vier Spur XCO-skoleliga wedrenne vir laerskole haar provinsiale kleure vir die sportsoort verwerf. Cara het tydens die Tour de Maroela die afgelope naweek op Ellisras weer op die podium geëindig met ‘n tweede plek in die sub-Nipper (o.8) afdeling van die wedren.

Daar het groot opgewondenheid onder die Graad 7’s geheers. As deel van hierdie geykte tradisie is Laerskool Messina het Vrydag, 7 September, ‘n die kinders na Bokmakierie aangery, vanwaar hulle geskiedkundige mylpaal behaal met die 40ste per fiets na Tshipise getrap het. Waterpunte langs herdenking van die Graad 7’s se jaarlikse fiets­ die pad is deur die Graad 7 ouers beman.

Nog ‘n tradisie wat voortgeleef is, is die “resies” toer na Tshipise. na die eindpunt wat gewoonlik ná die laaste waterpunt tussen die kinders plaasvind. Die tradisie is egter “verbreek” deurdat hierdie resies vir die eerste keer in die geskiedenis deur ‘n meisie gewen is. Nie net het Elri Vorster met die louere weggestap nie, maar die daaropvolgende vier plekke is ook deur meisies ingeneem, by name Tylor Nel (tweede), Meghna Jadeja (derde), Simone Nel (vierde) en Katlego Maraba (vyfde).

Laerskool Louis Trichardt is trots op twee van sy jong krieketspelers, Derrick Barnard (links) Sjokolade is ook uitgedeel aan fietsryers wat en Brendan Bruce (regs). Dié twee mannetjies is opgeneem in die provinsiale o.11-streekspan. buitengewoon goed presteer het.

Een van hulle was Dzanga Nthakheni, wat haar knie en skouers nerfaf geval het, maar steeds aanhou ry het en die resies voltooi het. Nog twee leerlinge, Dakalo Maduguma en Loyiso Booi, het die hele resies op piepklein fietsies aangedurf en ook nie moed opgegee nie.

Die organiseerder van die dag, me. Natasha Verster, het ná afloop van die fietstoer haar dank uitgespreek teenoor die borge van die dag, naamlik Tshipise Forever Resort (vir die gebruik van die oord en die maak van pap, sous en slaaie), Spur (geskenkbewyse vir die eerste drie plekke), Talisman (geskenkpakke en waterpunt), Messina Toyota Knights (geskenksak en waterpunt), Central African Crushers, Thabu Foods (koeldrank en Hoërskool Louis Trichardt is baie trots op water), Messina Apteek (geskenkpak), Tops (ys een van sy matriekleerlinge, Lara Venter, en water), die Musina Verkeersdepartement en al die Graad 7-ouers van Laerskool Messina. “Sonder wat gekies is as kaptein van die Limpopo Provinsie se meisies o/19-jukskeispan. Hoërskool Louis Trichardt het hulself weer bewys as die top bergfietsry skool in Limpopo toe hulle vir die soveelste agtereenvolgende jaar aangewys as die algehele wenners van die Spur XCO provinsiale skoleliga.

Triegies se fietsryspan het Saterdag in die vierde en finale rondte van die provinsiale Spur XCO-skoleliga, die Tour de Maroela op Lephalale, in moeilike omstandighede die knoop as top ‘n Verheugde fietsryspan van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt met die trofee as top fietsryskool in die skool deurgehaak. Hulle het nou dalk nie Saterdag podiumplekke losgery nie, maar nog nege Triegies kon spog met top 10 posisies. Vossie van Zyl (junior meisies) en Danelle Venter (sub-junior meisies) was vierde in hulle afdelings, terwyl Rohan Cronjé (Youth seuns) vyfde was. Michelle Steyn (sub-junior meisies) was sesde, Ditau Mandobe (junior seuns) en De Wet du Toit (Youth seuns) elk sewende, Herman Veldman (sub-junior seun) agtste, Calvin Lee (Youth seuns) negende en Dominique Nel (Youth meisies) 10de.

Ses van die Triegie-span het na afloop van Saterdag se wedren hulle provinsiale kleure in dié sportsoort verwerf, naamlik Richard Lambert, Jennavieve Truter, Christelle Coetzer, Eliz-Mari Pretorius, Rohan Cronjé en Calvin Lee. As wenners van die provinsiale skoleliga is Triegies ook uitgenooi om ‘n 12-man span te stuur na die nasionale finaal van die Spur XCO-liga by Hoërskool Bekker (Magaliesburg) gedurende die Oktober-vakansie. Buiten vir bogenoemde ses ryers wat in die span is, is die ander ses ryers wat vir die span gekies is De Wet du Toit, Ditau Mandobe, Danelle Steyn, Vossie van Zyl, Dominique Nel en Michelle Steyn.
