Double the trouble at Malaiskop

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho A local traditional leader has a very upset resident to deal with, after he had allocated the same stand to two people. Both “owners” had arranged for building materials to be dropped off at the site and wanted to start with construction.

The fiasco is taking place at Lagos section of Mailaskop village, where Vhamusanda Vho Joshua Nthabalala reigns.

Ms Selinah Musobi of Madombidzha village is adamant that she was the first person to secure a stand, way back in 2016. She erected a stable fence, delivered bricks and a truck load of sand, and had workers dig a foundation in preparation of erecting a tworoom house.

Just a month ago, when she visited her stand with the intention to start building, she was shocked to find that many pallets of new bricks were standing in her yard.

The gate was also locked with a padlock.

“I left my contact numbers at the gate and started contacting Vhamusanda Nthabalala, but he was not available,” Musobi said. “When I finally got hold of him, he said he had allocated my stand to another person, because I was taking too long to build a house. I was shocked and angry to hear those words come out from the mouth of a traditional leader in whom I had invested my trust, respect and confidence.”

Musobi made it clear to the chief that she was in no frame of mind to let another person occupy her stand because she had sought a place to stay as she wanted it. “I also wonder

what kind of person the other party is, because no person in the rural areas could accept from the chief a fenced stand with bricks and a load of sand – you should know that that stand belongs to someone else!”

When contacted for comment, Vhamusanda Nthabalala indicated that he had issued the stand to Musobi in 2014 (and not 2016) and had explained to her that he was giving her only four months to build a house or even a shack, to show that she was serious about staying in Lagos’s new stands.

“She failed to comply with our rules,” he said. “I contacted her many times; even for her to eventually clear out the bushes, erect the fencing, delivering a few bricks and the sand, I had to ‘beg’ her. She had never been serious about that stand.”

However, Nthabalala stated that Musobi came to the community gathering (khoroni) with her husband who “just stood up and swore at people” a fortnight ago. “That boy (Musobi’s husband) had disrespected us as a community and we are not going to allow the two of them to stay in our place,” Nthabalala said.

“If they stay here, they may as well be a law unto themselves and we don’t want people like those here! Her boy is disrespectful. I heard Musobi wants to build a house there now, but the community will not allow that – the mob will demolish it.”

He added: “I didn’t give Musobi a PTO (permission to occupy) document, but I had now issued one to the new occupier because they had delivered many, many bricks and not just a few bricks like

she did. The new occupier is serious about building and staying here.”

Meanwhile, the new stand owner, who was only identified as Munyai, was not available for comment.

On Sunday morning, Musobi had her workers start building her house, but a man came driving up in a Toyoya Quantum and pushed over the constructed wall with its balancing poles and a door frame. “He was very forceful and violent as he swore at us, saying that we were building a house in his home,” Musobi said. “He claims to be the son of the said ‘new owner’ of my stand. I reported the matter to the police, who opened a case but later informed me that the man who pushed off our house had now driven to Gauteng.”

The provincial police’s spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said that a case of malicious damage to property had been registered with the police and that he would update the newspaper with the status of the case.

“Give us power for our borehole”

According to Netshisaulu, the municipality’s mayor, Cllr Shonisani Sinyosi, was informed about this project. “The residents were disappointed to find out that she was now trying by all means to ignore and distance herself from thirsty residents after she wanted the community to ‘donate’ the borehole to the municipality. She said we must hand the borehole to the municipality, but we refused to hand it over at no cost,” he said. “If they need our borehole to be ‘called in their name’, they must reimburse us.”

Netshisaulu said that an electricity pole was nearby, which was being used for the old, now-defunct borehole. The community went to Eskom to inquire about the pole and Eskom confirmed that the municipality continued to pay for the unused electricity. “The mayor says the municipality will drill their own borehole because we are refusing to hand our borehole to the municipality,” he said.

Currently, water is a serious problem in the community and some resort to fetching water from a nearby stream. Some are buying water from their neighbours at R3 per 20 litres.

“For your information, the place where we are getting water at the present moment is not secured,” he said. “Domestic and wild animals like cattle, donkeys, monkeys, baboons and pigs also have access to the very same water we people are using. We believe our health is at risk.”

A media inquiry was sent to the municipality some three weeks ago, but no response was forthcoming. The municipality’s communications officer, Mr Peter Muthambi, said that he had forwarded the media inquiry to the technical team and added that the mayor was in no position to answer the questions or allegations raised in the media inquiry. “The municipality’s responsibility is to focus on issues of service delivery and it’s exactly what we’ll aim to do in this case,” he said.

36 Teen pregnancies at Dididi school

The prevalence of teenage pregnancies at schools in Limpopo is becoming a source of great concern.

Recently, 27 learners from Molautsi Secondary School outside Polokwane were found to be pregnant. Mukhwantheli Secondary School in Dididi outside Thohoyandou has 36 pregnant learners, with 13 being diagnosed with the HIV virus.

This was confirmed by Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba during the provincial launch of the School Health Week held at the Living Gospel World Mission Dididi hall. Schools from the surrounding areas were invited for the event. Professionals were also present to test people for various illnesses.

One of the attendees, a 21-year-old Grade 12 learner at Mukhwantheli Secondary, touched the hearts of her fellow learners as she narrated how pregnancy had affected her progress at school. She told her fellow learners that she was speaking out of experience that experimenting with sex at an early age would destroy their future.

“When I fell pregnant in 2015, my father became so stressed as he had wished that I be an example in the family.

I wasted a lot of my time directing my energy at impressing my boyfriend and neglecting my school work. What I can tell you is that having a child at school-going age will just give you an extra burden and distract you from your school work. You will end up losing your future,” she said.

Ramathuba said she was

She said it was about the choices that learners made that made them end up being pregnant. She urged them to focus on their education to pave the way for their future careers.

The MEC, who had her first child at the age of 31, told the learners to end their sexual relationships as that would disturb them in their studies. “Put your priorities first.

Disregard decisions that will take you nowhere. Focus on your education and your health and wait for your time to fall in love,” she said.

She warned them to abstain from sex, telling them she wanted to see a zero percent pregnancy at the school next year.

Satellite library for Musekwa area

By Mbulaheni Ridovhona The mayor of the Makhado Local Municipality, Cllr Shonisani Sinyosi, officially opened the Musekwa Satellite Library during a readathon campaign at the Musekwa Thusong Service Centre last Friday.

She said the municipality was proud to host the readathon campaign, which formed part of a national and global effort to promote the culture of reading and enjoying books at home, at school and in the community. “The campaign reminds all of us of the need to eradicate illiteracy, thus contributing to the fight

against poverty and inequality.

We need to spread awareness of the importance of literacy in building an economically vibrant nation,” she added She stressed that the country desperately needs graduates with higher-order literacy skills, capable of engagement across the world as global citizens. “We must encourage the establishment of reading clubs, book clubs, and the supply of books to children and families, so that we create an environment in which children can grow and flourish to meet the challenges of the future,” she said.

She thanked Guyo Bookshop, who sponsored books

for the library. “We need more businesses to learn from Guyo Bookshop for their commitment in promoting a culture of reading and learning in our communities,” she said. The learners were encouraged to use the library effectively to increase their ability toreflect on their own collective and self-development critically .

The learners were in joyful mood because they will no longer travel long distances to access the library at Louis Trichardt. Local traditional leader Chief Hendrick Musekwa thanked the municipality for prioritising education and urged the learners to produce good results.

During his visits, which targeted a performing school and non-performing school per day, Tshifhango encouraged learners in preparation for their final examinations.

“I came here today to encourage you to study hard, so that you can have a better future armed with education. Unlike us, who did not have bursaries that could help us to further our studies, you have plenty of bursaries to choose from. I am here today to make you aware that you have no excuse for failing to succeed, as you have support all around you.”

Tshifhango also encouraged some learners who fell pregnant to accept the challenge and continue working hard to secure their careers.

“Municipalities must prepare a credible IDP” Finance “A municipality that does not have a credible integrated development plan (IDP) is doomed to fail,” said Cllr Jeremia Khunwana, an executive committee member of the Musina Municipal Council.

He recently addressed representatives of community structures, government departments and traditional leaders during IDP representative forum meetings last week. The first meeting was held at Madimbo and another one was later held at Nancefield.

Khunwana said that, according to the Municipal Systems Act, every municipality must prepare its own credible IDP with community members to guide them for five years.

“In terms of the Constitution, the White Paper and legislation flowing from it, we are required to structure and manage our administration, budgeting and planning processes, give priority to the basic needs of the community, promote the social and economic development of the

community and participate in national and provincial development programmes.”

He said the key IDP reflections included the municipality’s vision and special emphasis on the most critical development and internal transformation needs and an assessment of the existing level of development. This included the identification of communities that did not have access to basic municipal services.

He added that it would also help them to look at the development of objectives and priorities for the people, “including our local economic development aims. There is also a need to scrutinize the development of strategies that are aligned with national or provincial sectoral plans and planning requirements binding on the municipality”.

He also mentioned that the municipality was consulting community members to include its stakeholders when taking decisions to ensure a smooth link between planning and delivery through a detailed and concrete project-design process.

Meet DJ Lirroy, the host of our afternoon drive show, Kings and Queens, also known as Buluvhutsi dzheke.

DJ Lirroy’s real name is Tshifhiwa Sigaima. He was born some 21 years ago, in 1997 at Ha-Rabali. He started his school career at Ha-Rabali Primary and completed his matric at Patrick Ramaano Secondary School.

Lirroy says that what he enjoys by working at a radio station is that he can talk to people and interact with them. “I learned to overcome my stage fright and my fear of a microphone.”

“I wake up every day and look forward to talking to my listeners. It is always a pleasure to know that I entertain many people on a daily basis,” says Lirroy.

Besides being a presenter, Lirroy is also a musician, signed under Vhafuwi music and he is a Phola brand director.

Lirroy wishes all learners who will be sitting for their final exams in a few weeks’ time the best of luck.

Tshanduko is making ripples in the gospel poetry arena

By Elmon Tshikhudo The name Tshanduko Faith Nemutanzhela is fast becoming a household name in poetry circles in Limpopo.

The gospel poet, who is better known as “The Kingdom Vessel” from Thohoyandou in Limpopo, is destined for great things in the world of arts. She was not always a poet, but her path Kingdom Vessel, who is making ripples in the gospel poetry arena. diverted from

Seventeen years later, she decided to focus on her other talents. When she joined Arena of Grace Ministries, under the leadership of Pastor Rene and Mama Charlotte Brunner, she discovered her God-given talent for the fusion genre of poetry combined with preaching.

Though she can write about anything, her focus is on spreading the Gospel through her gift of poetry. About her stage name, The Kingdom Vessel, she explains that she believes it was given to her by God Himself and it’s a combi-

nation of two of her favourite scriptures in the Bible, which are Matthew 6:33 and 2 Corinthians 4:7.

In 2015, she released a demo and the response was satisfactory, considering that it was her first attempt.

Recently, she released an easy-play album with four poems, entitled Inside the belly of a fish.

The project is a mix of different music genres such as afro jazz and country with poetry and, according to her fans, it speaks to the soul.

Excitement at Nthabalala The community of the Nthabalala enjoyed a weekend of hype and excitement in the company of Phalaphala FM during the station’s visit to the area.

The event started with career guidance for all Grade 12 pupils from Denga Secondary School last Friday and they donated sanitary towels to many schools around the area.

The programme concentrated on different activities, including traditional dancing for senior citizens as a way of promoting good health. A Phalaphala FM soccer team also played against the Nthabalala soccer team. The match attracted a lot of loyal listeners, who attended in huge numbers.

The event was attended by senior traditional chiefs, pastors and community members. “Our aim is to engage with our listeners, show how much we appreciate their support and, in the process, build the much-needed emotional bond between our audience and the station,” said the station’s event coordinator, Mr Lufuno Munonde.

“Our aim is to educate, preserve, promote and protect the Tshivenda culture and customs.

We will try and visit as many parts of our listeners’ footprint to be closer to our listeners because we love them.”

He also invited businesspeople to use the station to market their brands by partnering with brand Phalaphala FM. “We call upon

businesses in different areas, in partnership with Vho-Thovhele, to engage with us, so that we can make visits to their respective areas a reality. We also believe this initiative will serve to remind our youth about the importance of showing respect to our traditional leaders.”

He added that since the station was operating on a shoe-string budget, it became necessary for the chiefs and their local businesses to come on board to make this worthy initiative a reality. “The station depends on sponsors for most of the things we need, ranging from accommodation to stage, sound and décor, to mention a few.

This has been a demonstration that our stakeholder management is working for the stations.”

Thovhele Vho-Nndeleni Vhutshilo Nthabalala said that he was pleased that Phalaphala FM had come to spend time with Nthabalala residents and the neighbouring villages. He said that, with an African style of living, there would be no street kids, hobos or hunger. “We must start practising our culture of being proud, so that our children will grow up knowing their identity,” he said.

He outlined that, in a democratic country such as South Africa, no culture was inferior to another, that all cultures were equal. He criticised parents, however, who were not teaching their children their own vernacular language.

Pastor donates car to community radio station

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Community radio stations are some of the non-profit organisations that are always facing hardships and challenges when it comes to operational resources and it comes as a relief when a donation comes their way.

Archbishop Peter Rabali of the New African Apostolic Church was moved when he was notified about the lack of resources at Nzhelele FM and decided to help. He told Limpopo Mirror that he was a regular visitor at the community radio station and that he knew most of the station’s challenges. He then decided to donate a second-hand Suzuki SX4 sedan to the station.

“We are glad about the work that these young people are doing at the

community radio station,” he said.

“They have started a very good project and it needs the support of all people here in our area, so that they can feel supported and appreciated.”

He added that people always spoke about a need for change and development in the rural areas, but they were reluctant to lend a hand when it was necessary to do so. “No one will come all the way from a far-away place and help us do better,” Rabali said. “Let’s continue to help one another develop our communities, mostly in projects that concern the youth.”

The station manager, Mr Khathutshelo Ramugondo, said: “We thank the archbishop and the church for allowing God to use them as a vessel of blessings, which then flowed into our radio station,” Ramugondo said. “We

highly appreciate the donation and we promise to look after this car, so that it can last us in our community outreach programmes and other projects.”

Pioneer sculptor of the Vhembe District passes away

By Kaizer Nengovhela One of Vhembe’s “big trees”, the sculptor George Magonya (80) of Madabani, died after a long illness at the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital last Thursday.

Magonya was a pioneer in the development and education of sculptors in the area and he served as a role model to many. According to his grandson, Mr Rofhiwa Magonya, his grandfather made a significant impact on the lives of many people. He was also someone who loved and enjoyed life.

“My grandfather had a big heart. As a family, we are still feeling the loss. His death left a very deep pain in our hearts,” he said. Rofhiwa described Magonya as a pioneer, a born leader and a man of vision. He was a very solemn, restrained and dignified man. “For many years he served selflessly and faithfully in different communities, created employment for many families and in dark days he made himself available day and night to all who needed him,” Rofhiwa added.

“It is painful to lose an intelligent father, but we thank God, because He does everything for a reason. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

Passengers from Zimbabwe lose everything as bus burns on N1

By Jo Robinson Two local farm owners, Melony Coetzee and Johan Rootman, were among the first to arrive at the scene of a burning bus on the N1 close to the turn-off to AFB Makhado on Sunday morning.

It began in the early hours of the morning at around 04:00, said Rootman. Onlookers could only look on helplessly as first the bus and

then the trailer attached to it burned out completely.

While some witnesses felt that the non-arrival of any help in the form of firefighting equipment at the very least was frightening, it was noted that all the bus occupants had managed to exit it without injury, even though they lost all of their possessions, both in the trailer and in the bus.

Several powerful explosions took place on board as the fire progressed, and it would not have been safe for anyone to

try and retrieve any of their valuables.

Rootman said that the actions of the Bandolierkop SAPS had been much appreciated when they arranged for a bus to take the stranded passengers, who had been on their way from Zimbabwe to Cape Town, back to Musina as many passports had also gone up in the blaze. Rootman said that the scene had been secured and that all debris from the fire had been cleared quickly by the authorities.

By Kaizer Nengovhela Rainbow Sport Academy fought hard to earn a 1-0 victory over Maebane Young Eagles in their Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators league match at Maebane on Sunday.

Eagles had nobody to blame for the defeat but themselves. They squandered countless scoring opportunities. Their captain, Humbulani Managa, could not live up to the fans’ expectations as a scoring machine as the defenders were all over

him. Realizing that life was difficult for him as a striker, Managa moved back and played as a midfielder.

The keeper of Rainbow, Mahlatsi Marakalala, made his presence felt in the sixth minute when he braved Dakalo Masha’s close-range volley and palmed the ball away for a corner kick.

Rainbow’s all-important goal came in the 24thminute when Makhanda Musekwa blasted in a rocket from inside the box.

The second half saw Eagles commit more blunders. Their right winger, Justice Mametja,

caused an upset in the 50thminute. He unleashed aimlessly from inside the box instead of relaxing on the ball and picking the spot.

Both sides effected some changes to their starting line-up in the last half. Eagles replaced Thabelo Mavhetha and Gudani Ramashia with Lufuno Luvhengo and Mulalo Thovhei respectively in the 59th minute.

Mbavhalelo Thathaisa of Rainbow was also warned with a card for dangerous play in the 70th minute.

By Mbulaheni Ridovhona The 246 households of Ha-Mavhunga village in Nzhelele, who have been living without electricity, were overjoyed when the electrification of the village was officially completed a fortnight ago.

Cllr Shonisani Sinyosi, mayor of the Makhado Municipality, said the switching on of the electricity was a clear indication that the municipali-

ty was committed to providing in the basic needs of the residents. “We want to improve the lives of our residents.

We want them to stop using candles and paraffin stoves,” she added.

She also condemned criminal acts and advised the criminals to refrain from stealing cables. “When you steal cables, you make someone’s life difficult. As residents, don’t allow criminals to vandalise this electricity,” the mayor said.

Seven people were employed during the electrification period. “We are delighted that some of the local people benefited from the project by getting jobs,” she added.

On behalf of the community, the local traditional leader, Vhavenda Vho Annanias Mavhunga, said that they were very happy with the electricity.

The petition that was filed by our practitioner was successful, and Mr Nndwambi was granted leave to appeal in January 2017.

However, the appeal was not timeously prosecuted and it lapsed. Condonation was subsequently granted by the SCA and Mr Nndwambi’s appeal was set down for August 2018.

Silver for Musina’s “Zola Budd” Musina Sport “There is nothing more fulfilling than being counted among the best while competing in a foreign country”. So says Musina Municipality’s own Zola Budd, Lillian Muleya, who recently came second during a 10km race in Manzini, Swaziland.

Muleya was joined by another municipal employee, Rosina Mukumba, who finished in the top 10 in the race. Muleya and Mukumba were competing with fellow athletes from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Zambia and Swaziland.

The race was part of the week-long sporting activities organized by the Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA). SAIMSA aims to build friendship among municipal workers in Southern Africa and to encourage healthy lifestyles by municipal workers through taking part in sports.

Muleya is not a novice and won several medals in previous SAIMSA tournaments. In 2016, she won the 5km race in Lesotho and last year she won the event during the SAIMSA tournament in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. This year, she

Mighty Girls are still battling to come to terms with the 0-2 defeat they suffered at the hands of Morning Stars Lacoste at the Guvhukuvhu grounds last Saturday. Should they not change their playing pattern against Samba Girls tomorrow, it will be difficult for Mighty Girls to collect the maximum points, even hough they will be playing in front of their home crowd. Mighty Girls played defensive football in their game against Morning Stars, so their 0-2 is understandable.

Muleya and Mukumba thanked their employer, Musina Municipality, for giving them the opportunity to realise their potential. “We would not have achieved this if it were not the support from our employer. We also thank our colleagues who were there to give us courage while we were running the race. We will definitely bring better results during the next competitions.”

Municipal spokesperson Wilson Dzebu said the institution was very proud of Muleya and Mukumba.

Good start for Gwamasenga United

By Frank Mavhungu Gwamasenga United Brothers commenced their league programme with a victory, when they beat Vyeboom Marikana 1-0 in their MMK Administrators Soccer League match at the Gwamasenga grounds on Sunday.

United Brothers took the game to the visitors from the start, but their original

fighting spirit vanished with time. They could have scored an avalanche of goals within the first 30 minutes, but their strikers were unlucky.

Their left winger, Lindelani Mudau, missed a fortune in the eighth minute.

Mulweli Malade initiated a solo move from the middle of the park before dishing a brilliant pass to Mudau, who shot wide with the keeper already beaten.

The absence of Aluwani Mundalamo and Rendani Sadiki in the Brothers’ defence was evident from the onset as the strikers for Marikana were doing as they pleased within the Brothers’ danger area. The goal that earned the hosts three points came in the 36th minute. Mulweli Malade received a beautiful pass from Lindelani Mudau and beat the keeper with a half volley.

United Brothers nearly increased the margin three minutes before half time.

Their right winger, Livhuwani Mavhuyangwa, dispossessed a defender of Marikana and caused an upset by shooting aimlessly from close range. The ball missed the target by inches. Marikana were all over United Brothers in the last 15 minutes of the game but could not hit the back of the net.

MTG increases Thulfa sponsorship

Can Leopards maul the Amakhosi?

By Frank Mavhungu This weekend marks the start of the annual Telkom Knockout Competition. The draw for the competition was held at the SuperSport Studios in Johannesburg last Monday evening.

Teams that finished in the top eight positions on the Absa Premiership log last season were seeded, meaning that they could not be drawn against each other in the opening round of the competition. The eight teams that were seeded are Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Lamontville Golden Arrows, Maritzburg United, Free State Stars and SuperSport United.

The Absa Premiership newcomers, Black Leopards, will play against Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon. The mood is good in the Chiefs camp after being crowned the Makhufe Cup champions last Sunday. They beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.

According to the Leopards’ head coach, Mr Joel “The Prophet” Masutha, the team’s sharpshooter, Mwape Musonda, has fully recovered from an injury. Should he be given a chance on Sunday, Musonda is expected to form a good combination with Joseph Mhlongo and Tumelo Khutlang at the forefront. It remains to be seen

Baroka FC will have a date with Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Peter Mokaba Stadium and Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic will test each other’s strength at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

Amazulu will host Cape Town City at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban.
