ODE VAN ‘N S.A.

Tot op die einde, voordat sy in ‘n koma verval het, was haar leuse “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want (die Here is my Herder, ek sal niks kortkom nie)”.

Diep het ek my wortels geplant, in hierdie, my nuwe land! Daar is mense wat nou my grond begeer.

By Andries van Zyl Investors and local politicians were given a closer look at what exactly is being planned for the new 92-bed Zoutpansberg Private Hospital (ZPH) in Louis Trichardt during a hospital-expansion visit to the site on Tues day, 16 August. The guests included members of the hospital’s board of directors, the invest ment partners Summit Africa, shareholders, the mayor of the Vhembe District Municipal ity, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, and the mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Samuel Munyai. The new ZPH is being built to serve not only the Makhado area, but the greater Vhembe District with the aim of delivering world class health care, without patients’ having to travel vast distances to get these elsewhere. As an introduction, Mr Kevin Hinde, on behalf of A3 Architects, gave a brief overview of the project so far. “We are very blessed and honoured to have been involved in the project since 2018, and I know we had a brief two and a half year interruption of all of our lives, so that obviously contributed substantially to the delay,” said Hinde. He was, however, excit ed about the progress made to date. “But the project we are sitting with right now is a project that has evolved. I think we went through 14 or 15 different revisions in the concept design in order to get the modelling right,” said Hinde. He explained that they ended up deciding just to build a new hospital, rather than trying to tie it into the existing hospital. The plan is then to repurpose the existing building as support infrastructure.Thenewhospital is essentially a four storey building (ground level plus three floors). The ground floor will feature a very comprehen sive radiology unit, a reception area at the front door, a coffee shop, some administrative offices, a pharmacy and all the public services. At the back, it will tie into the existing hospital, through an access passage, which is going to become support and consulting facilities. On the first floor will be a 27 bed medical ward and an eight bed paediatric ward. “So, your medical/paediatric component will be on the first floor … What is essentially on the first floor ties into the service level because of the fall in the [slope of the] site and a comprehensive new arrangement of services in the new facility, including a kitchen, laundry, new engineering and backup water. The building is going to be completely self supporting and a stand alone structure,” Hinde said. Coming up to the second floor, this floor will consist of a 19 bed surgical ward, all rooms with en suite bathroom arrangements, typical of private hospital planning, as well as the neces sary support infrastructure and facilities. “What we’ve also done is we’ve separated the clinical services and supply services from the move ment of patients and public. You don’t want to mix those two. So, as far as possible, in a very tight footprint, we have managed to contain the services course as separate from the public circu lation course to give you a sense of well being as an end user. It also then allows the staff to move freely and uninterrupted without mixing with the public and patients,” said Hinde. Also on the second floor is a dedicated maternity ward and neonatal and delivery rooms. On the top (third) floor will be the operat ing theatres because of all the equipment and air conditioning on the roof, from a technical perspective, to service the theatres underneath. It will have three theatres, with the potential for future expansion, and a post op unit, 10 bed ICU/HCU ward, central sterile services depart ment and theatre staff resting and changing area. “This will be the super specialised floor,” said Hinde. He concluded his presentation by stating that the building has been planned to allow for future expansion along all its edges. ZPH manager Ms Anneke Stroebel expressed her gratitude towards Summit Africa as inves tors and said she was excited to see the new hospital taking shape. “We salute Summit Africa for investing in our vision. This community will be forever grateful,” said Stroebel. In his opening remarks, Mr Ngange Nongogo (Zoutpansberg Management Committee board chairman and Summit Investment principal and partner) said that at the time they (Summit Af rica) were contemplating getting involved with the expansion of the hospital, the R200 million investment into the Makhado district was the second largest private investment into the area in the last 20 years. “What I want to say is a big thank you to my fellow executives on the board. A significant thank you to the management team that has supported us through this endeavour and while we are going through this process in keeping the lights on and making sure the people who come through the hospital are more than well serviced. A big vote of thanks as well to the Summit team … as our primary investors into this expansion that you see in front of you and the great set of doctors. There are over 20 doctors who have committed to come on board and support us in this growth initiative. All have really taken ZPH from being primarily a maternity based hospital to a 92 bed acute hospital with three theatres servicing the greater community, not only in the Makhado area but the greater Vhembe District. I hope that when we speak in five years’ time, we will talk about the numbers of lives we’ve saved by making sure people don’t have to travel these road to get to quality health care and that they are actually treated at our fine facility,” said Nongogo. Also present at the function was Mr Tomi Amosun (Summit co founder and managing partner). He thanked the ZPH management for backing Summit Africa as their investment partner. “Summit is all about partnerships … We can have an idea, but without a partnership, that idea would have stayed an idea on paper,” heAccordingsaid. to Amosun, the project is more than just numbers. “Numbers are important because, at the end of the day, we are investing to make a return. We are investing pensioners’ money to make a return for those pensioners. But equally, we are investing to make in impact in the community, and that impact needs to be felt even after the investment has been made,” saidSoAmosun.whatdoes that mean? “Ngange mentioned we are investing R200 million on behalf of the investors. But the investment does not stop there. The goal in this particular facility is to create at least 80 jobs new jobs. The new jobs are in the clinical side of the facility, as well on the administrative side. But the facility cannot stand on its own. It needs cleaning, it needs catering, it needs laundry, security – it needs all kinds of services that are spinoffs of the investments that we have made. What we measured is that for every R1 million of investment that we make in a community like this one, you create at least another R1 million of expenditure for local SMEs. So, what we believe is that by investing R200 million into this project, we create another R200 million. And that is annual expenditure, not just a once off,” said Amosun. On behalf of the people of the Vhembe district, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda thanked all those involved in the project. “To the management of ZPH, the leadership of Summit Africa and other partners, I want to say we really appreciate this initiative. This is not only going to help in taking care of our health, but also in terms of poverty alleviation,” said Nenguda. The completion date for the new hospital is set for October 2023.

Two more suspects in court for Collins Chabane mayor’s murder

Coming in in second place on the day was the Go Girls team, consisting of (from left to right) Anton Pretorius, Tinus Pretorius, Maarten Venter and Rampie Gilfillan (absent when the photo was taken). Photo supplied.

Two more suspects were arrested last Friday in connection with the murder of the late Col lins Chabane mayor, Moses Maluleke. Avhatakali Isaac Mudau (36) from Maniini was apprehended in Vuwani, and Wiseman Ba loyi (36) from Ntlhaveni at his place of work in Saselamani. The arrests follow two weeks after the first two suspects, Shumani Nemadodzi (47) and Avhatakali Mulaudzi (42), were arrested. Mudau and Baloyi briefly appeared in the Malamulele Magistrates’ Court on Monday and were charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammu nition. The matter was postponed to 25 August to allow Baloyi to get legal representation. Both accused remain in custody. Unlike in the previous appearances regarding the case, where the court was filled to capacity, only close family members, senior Collins Cha bane officials (including the mayor, Chief Whip and the Speaker), the NPA, legal representatives, community structures, court officials and the media were allowed inside the courtroom. A large group of ANC members, dressed in the organisation’s colours, sang freedom songs and chanted slogans at the entrance gate of the court premises, where a contingent of police members wasThestationed.Maluleke family’s representative, Mr Humphrey Magagula, said he was comfortable with the postponement, seeing that two more suspects had been arrested. “We are hopeful, especially with the recent arrests. It shows that this matter is going somewhere and that justice will be served sooner rather than later. As a fam ily, we are deeply disappointed with the latest arrested suspects. These are very familiar faces to the family, especially Baloyi, with whom we live,” Magagula said. The late Maluleke was killed at his home at Shikundu on 21 July this year, during what was believed to have been a robbery. His 18 year old son was seriously injured during the incident and admitted to a local hospital. Initially, three suspects were arrested, but one was later released because of a lack of evidence to link him to the incident. The first two sus pects, Shumani Nemadodzi and Avhatakali Mu dau, had since abandoned their bail applications on Wednesday, 10 August. They also remain in custody.

The young Carmia du Plessis. Her new special-needs stroller will be in South-Africa on 20 August. Her family is very grateful towards all the people who made it possible to get the stroller. Photo supplied. Young Carmia and family thankful for making special-needs stroller a reality

Charity Earlier this year, the Zoutpansberger wrote about a very brave little girl, the four-year-old Carmia du Plessis from Levubu, who urgently needed a new and bigger special-needs stroller. Carmia was diagnosed at birth with Microcephaly cerebral palsy (quadriplegia), epilepsy, Corpus callosum and scoliosis. Her medical diagnosis is very complex and rare and her family uses a specialneeds stroller to get around. This included visits to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital, where she was receiving therapy at thatCarmia, stage. however, outgrew her stroller, which made moving around very difficult for her. Friends and family jumped in, helping to raise funds by means of incentives such as the BackaBuddy project. This week, her family responded with some good news. “Her new stroller is making landfall on SouthAfrican soil on 20 August, imported all the way over the big ocean,” the family said. Regarding this, they expressed their heartfelt gratitude towards all who had supported Carmia in getting the new stroller. Since the Zoutpansberger last wrote about Carmia in February this year, she and mom Marinda have moved to Polokwane for Carmia to be closer to the specialists treating her. “She is making much better progress. In September, she will again see the neurologist, and if her epilepsy is under control, she will be referred to a spinal neurosurgeon (paediatric) to look at her spine, which started curving sideway because of the scoliosis.”

In preparaon for the Inter high and to show off our school spirit, Triegie students were given the week to show off all their creavity and “craziness”, if we can call it that. We were given a theme each day from the 21st to the 24th of February to abide by, while sll wearing our school uniform and we started with: Wacky “tekkie” Learners were allowed to bring their ‘wackiest’ shoes and socks. We saw all types of creavity, ranging from the lile girl who ed balloons to her legs (I sll don’t know how they didn’t pop) to the boy that stole his mom’s heels. Mia Jones even wore plasc boles which she cut out like shoes. Role model or favourite celebrity! The next day we were given the chance to dress like our role model or favourite celebrity. Since spirit week is all about expressing your true self, children went all out ranging from gangsters to rock stars. Sonita and Leanie used Clueless as their theme to dress. Crazy hair Following that, we had crazy hair. Even though some of our Triegies brought some of their finest hats and caps, we saw wigs in different lengths and colours. Some people had their hair looking like our lions mane. I’m prey sure some mothers were annoyed by their sons stealing their favourite wigs. Even boles and cups were added to their hairstyles. One girl was very creave with her “bolla”; it looked like a spider had nestled in her hair. Triegies really showed their craziness.. Warrior Day To end off a very evenul week, we had warrior day and on the last day, we surely symbolised the pride and joy of the Triegie lion. With spirit week, we showed all the characteriscs of a true Triegie warrior: courage, bravery, hope, leadership and so much more. A lot of them came with warrior stripes to show their fearlessness. And with all this craziness, we were ready for Inter high. wEEek

Jimmy Musindiwa – Jimmy wants to join the military overseas. Maybe you are going to be the top gholf playing soldier.

Jaymie Knighton is Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se grootste grapmaker

Jaymie is ook die skool se mascot. As jy dus wonder wie is in die leeu.

Jaymie is altyd vol grappies.

Juf.

Daardie goue eier was so groot soos n rugbybal. My ore het vuurwarm geword en ek kon my hart hoor klop bo my vinnige asemhaling. - Jamin Schuch – gr.12

SA-Atletiekkampioenskappe My ervaring op SA’s! - Luandi van Zyl Ek kan ‘n hele boek skryf oor net my ervaring by SA’s hierdie jaar! My eerste sprong het ek oorgetrap. Ek gaan ALLES gee, ek is reg! Daar hardloop ek my 58 sekondes en eindig algeheel vyfde in Suid-Afrika. Dit was ‘n hethetby.wasgevoel!ONGELOOFLIKEMaardaardiedagnogvervanver-Die400m-hekkiesnogvoorgelê.Ditsoos‘nbergge-

voel. Ek kon mnr. Davel en my ma hoor skreeu van blydskap. Selfs my opponente het my omhels en geluk gewens. My mikpunt was vier goue medaljes vir Interhoër. Mnr. Davel het bly glo in my en my deurentyd aangemoedig. Mev. Moulder se 1ste span is 4de in Limpopo. Stander twee. From a young age I’ve always wanted to design and I’ve been creave for as long as I can remember. I’m an arsc person, which is why I’d like to be an architect. I’m really trying to perform well this year in preparaon for next year. This is the closest I’ve been to aaining my dreams, and I thank God for the gi and opportunity. I want to connue growing and improving my work in the coming years.

En so beland hy natuurlik by die beste skool, nl. Hoёrskool Louis Trichardt. Onthou net! DIS GROOT SKOENE wat gevul moet word.

These parents are a true definion of the fact that you can do anything no matter your age. The money that was raised was used in the Leeukuil. We would like to thank our lovely organizers for such a great event. In this regard we would like to thank Mr. Petersen and Mrs. Nel. We also want to thank all our sponsors because without you, this event would not have been so amazing. For those who could not make it this me, we will be back! Triegie love. Aer two years of isolaon due to covid 19, we finally got the chance to go out for fun acvies with friends and family. It also gave us a chance to burn all the fat we gained from lounging around during the covid lockdown. The park was packed with people. I mean grannies, mothers, fathers, even dogs for that maer. A lot of people really came out. ”It was a great chance to bond with friends’’, said some of the grade 9s who aended. Mrs. Groothof stated that she enjoyed it even though she was supervising and she was movated by the people’s enthusiasm and smiles. The whole place was rock and rolling. The people had outdone themselves to meet the theme of rock and roll. Not to menon how the teachers had also dressed up to have fun and enjoy the walk with the students and their families.

Inter high is usually an event characterised by cheering, singing and adrenaline but due to Covid and the fact that there was no singing contest, there was something missing. The usual arrival of the cheerleaders and the schools compeng for the bespoken singing trophy, was definitely something that created a sllness in the atmosphere. All credit to our athletes who tried their best to get the spirit flowing throughout the day. At the end of the day, there was a goose bump moment when athletes and educators pulled together to sing the school anthem from their heart. It was very emoonal for our matrics who sang it for the last me at inter high. Armand said it was a special and proud moment that will stay with him forever. There was a special relay event for the matrics which was ran by Marthinus, Luandi, Danelle and Herman. We were amazed at how fast Marthinus was flying. And what a chick-magnet he turned out to be! Especially with that body builder profile of his! Louis Trichardt was placed third aer Merensky and Pietersburg. They truly did their best and for that our thanks goes to our Athletes and trainers. Next year we are going to have our singing squad’s voices behind us again, so let’s work even harder and be the fireworks at inter high 2023!

How to enter We received some wonderful entries the past week and our region’s young (and older) writers have managed to debunk the myth that our artists are an apathetic lot. All they needed was just a bit more time and encouragement. Our winner for this week is the very talented Zwothe Joyert Thothori. This 17yearold Grade 12 student from Ridgeway College brought some romance into the competition. We did not have to change much in Zwothe’s story, as it was provided almost “print ready”. She has a very comfortable style of writing and keeps the reader’s attention up to the end. Zwothe has also managed to raise the bar considerably and it will become more of a challenge now to win the prize money. For next week, we already have entries for the character of Emma and two for Lisa, but we will only look at them after 13:00 on Friday. Please send in your entries before then and check to see which characters are still available. Thus far we have used the stories of Marelize, Gerard, Zachary and Lee. The ones still available are Rovha, Lisa, Shabnim, Emma, Gerrit, Takalani andForAdrian.those who do not yet know how the competition works:Every week, R1 000 has been earmarked for the reader who submits the best story. The competition combines a travel story with unrelated individual adventures.Theweekly travel episodes are written by our own staff and these focus on the journey of a group of adventurers who are exploring the Old Salt Trail in the western Soutpansberg. They follow a fiveday route, during which they encounter many of the treasures the mountain has to Theoffer.group of adventurers comprise 11 very diverse fictional travellers. The narrator is a young lady called Marelize. In every week’s edition, she or one of the other hikers talks about the route and what the group members have encountered. Two “scar stories” are featured for every day of the trip. The group members stop at a specific location for lunch and one of the members tells his or her story. The same happens at night, when the group members gather around the campfire and one person shares a story. This is also the part where our readers need to contribute. The readers must use their imagination and write a story focusing on one of the characters. The theme of the competition is: “The night of the scars”. The idea is that each story will focus on a “scar” that the characters received somewhere in their lives. These can be physical scars, or they can be emotional scars. Short profiles of the 11 characters are provided. In some cases, Marelize will expand on the characters when she discusses the route. Studying each character and building a story around their characteristics will be Thecrucial.maximum length of an entry is 1 300 words. Once a character’s story is published, that “entry” is closed. If, for instance, you decided to write about Shabnim’s adventure and another writer’s story about Shabnim gets published, you need to move on to another character. However, this also means that entries can have a longer shelf life. Readers are welcome to enter stories on all seven remaining characters. The entries will stay “live” until the judges have decided who the winner is regarding a specific character. All the stories as well as the travel adventures are published on our website

Zachary is often referred to as the local Bear Grylls. When it comes to the outdoors, there is very little he does not know. His insatiable thirst for adventure has taken the 39-year-old geologist on some of the world’s most Emma is an experienced journalist who is currently working for a local newspaper while dreaming of becoming a war photographer. At 37 she has won numerous awards for writing, as well as photography, but has never mastered the art of keeping direction. She is constantly searching for that new adventure. Will she ever settle down?

* Judging will start Fridays at 13:00, until such time as the competition ends. * Once an entry has been received, that entry stays “live”. When a weekly winner gets selected, the character chosen in the winning entry becomes dormant, meaning that all other entries featuring the same character, will then be redundant. * If the winning entry does not feature your chosen character, the entry will be considered along with all the new ones received, the following week. * All entries must be emailed to: *story@zoutnet.co.za.Everyentrymustcontain the following information: Name - Address - Phone number - Confirmation that the story is the original work of the person entering for the competition and that the Zoutpansberger may use it for purposes of this competition. - If the person entering is younger than 18, a short letter from a parent or guardian stating that the work is original and may be used for the purpose of this competition.

Gerrit (55) comes from a military background. As a young boy, his father (also ‘n military man) shaped him into becoming a soldier. Tigers don’t cry and love is but a four-letter word. Rising to the rank of captain, he was one of the last members of the old South African Army to have seen the horrors of the Bush War on the Angolan border. With the new 1994 dispensation, he found himself on civvy street in a world he did not understand and nor did the world understand him. He never found love, although so desperately longing for it. He is constantly running away from something to somewhere, thus finding himself in the Soutpansberg. Maybe here he can find peace.

Lisa (53) is the mother of two grown daughters and wife of the CEO of a successful Sandton-based Import/Export company. Since his work often takes him away on extended business trips abroad and both her daughters had left the nest, Lisa has taken up hiking and bird watching to fill her days and get out of the empty house. She frequently visits nature reserves and national parks around South Africa.

Lee’s story: By Zwothe Joyert Thothori Aclap of thunder. Tree branches and leaves started swaying. The wind threatened to put out the campfire. Lee got goosebumps. She never liked being the centre of attention, but nature - the trees, the thunder and the wind – seemed to be giving her a moment of Everyonewelcome.smiled; she smiled back nervously. Am I really showing everyone my scar? Lee thought to herself. Finally, she started talking. “We were both 24 the first time our lives intertwined. After spending most of my time without friends, I felt so connected to him, even though I didn’t understand the root of the connection. We attended the same university, came from the same area, were doing the same course and were both intelligent, although he seemed like a super genius - which was a source of motivation for me,” she said, looking around at the others. Lee paused, gulping like she was swallowing a mega pill. “At first, he seemed to be aware of the connection, yet he avoided it and me for about six months. But something - I’m not sure what - broke the wall he was trying to build between us. I suspect my work ethic and determination drew his almond-shaped, chocolate-brown eyes to me. “In addition to working together as study partners, during the holidays, we took walks in different mountains and forests to strengthen our bond, and my fragile body. The physical aspect of my disability is not something I paid too much attention to, but he helped me overcome that. All my life, I’d been used to relying on my crutch to walk, until he became the crutch by my side.” A small smile tugged at the corners of her mouth, giving her a wistful look. “The variety of plants and birds in the bushes fascinated him. Although I had no special interest in learning about birds and plants specifically, I felt the connection he had with nature extend from him and into me like a tenuous but tenacious root. I developed an interest in nature, traveling and adventure.” The small smile grew. “As we spent more time together, we occupied the spaces in each other’s hearts. However, sometimes, we would go through bouts of sudden and sporadic silence. He could be cold towards me for no reason, or act as if I wasn’t there. I remember his facial expressions the most - so cold and remote. I struggled with the weight of my right arm and leg because I had given up my crutch, and he also stopped helping me move around or get things I needed. He looked so detached,” she said, pain clearly shining in her eyes. A small silence hung in the air for a moment.“Thelast time it happened, the wall between us seemed unbreakable and insurmountable. Two times, these actions led to the end of our friendship. Never had I believed myself to be strong emotionally, but this time, I was a fighter - for my emotions and for our friendship. I didn’t want it to end, but every time I tried to reach out, both he and the wall pushed me away,” she continued, looking down and blinking a few times, as if holding back tears. “Then, one day, I finally threw in the towel and stopped trying to fix an ‘us’ that did not exist,” she said, a trace of bitterness in her voice, to no-one’s surprise. Slowly she looked up, fixing her gaze on the stars, as if seeking some guidance there. “Suddenly, he changed his mind. Surprisingly, the more I distanced myself from him, the more he seemed to want to get closer to me. When we had varsity group projects, he would be the first to run to me to ask me to work with him - after making crystal clear that he wanted us to separate.

The night of the scars on the Old Salt Trail

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 19 AUGUSTUS 2022 15 DAY 3 - CAPTURING THE SPOOR DOWN TO MEDIKE With some reluctance the group of adventurers left the lookout spot at the top of the mountain to make their way down into the Sand River gorge. Edwin guided them along barely visible paths, where they had to negotiate loose rocks and cling on to the roots of trees to avoid slipping down the slope. While Marelize was carefully trying to find her footing on a rock below, she noticed some white markings and reddish dots on the rock face. “That’s a rock painting!” she exclaimed. Edwin quickly made his way up again to have a proper look at the markings. “It’s an apron!” he proclaimed excitedly. “Look at the shape. We must have stumbled upon an early initiation site for young women,” he said.Marelize had to take a few more glances at the markings to try and see an apron. At first, all she could see was a squarish motif with dots inside. Only when Edwin pointed out the patterns and the finger dots did it start to make sense.“Most of what I know is thanks to the work of the late Eddie and Cathelijne Eastwood,” explained Edwin. “These two people stayed in the Soutpansberg, but travelled throughout the region to document the rock art. In 2006 they published a book, appropriately named Capturing the Spoor “For me, the most fascinating part of the Eastwoods’ work is the research they did on the different types of aprons painted on such walls,” said Edwin. While the group members made their way down the mountain, Edwin told them more about the history of the rock art that can be found in the “Eddiemountain.reckoned just over a tenth of all Khoekhoe imagery consists of paintings of women’s front aprons,” he“Whosaid. are the Khoekhoe?” asked Marelize.“Itisbelieved that some 2000 years ago, the footprints of the Khoekhoe, or the Khoikhoi as some researchers refer to them, joined the tracks of the San people. Although it is still hotly debated, the Khoekhoe most probably came from the north, through the Kalahari in eastern and central Botswana, making their way to the Orange River. They are often referred to as ‘hunters with sheep’ who were following the watercourses,” said Edwin. “The Limpopo Khoikhoi, as some people refer to them, settled here in the last century BC. Noone really knows if they met the San here and interacted with them. At the time, the local San huntergatherers may also have been practising herding and agriculture in the Limpopo basin.” Edwin put up his hands and shrugged hisMarelize’sshoulders.natural curiosity was now in overdrive. “But how can you be sure that this is a Khoekhoe painting and not one of the San’s?” she asked. “In fact, I think this would most likely be neither. I suspect it is a later Northern Sotho painting. They preferred more secluded places, such as the thick bush alongside cliff faces in steep river gorges. In some cases, they even produced their art on top of that of the San or the Khoekhoe,” he added. Edwin then talked for a while about the differences in the shapes of the painted aprons and how they symbolise the rites of passage. “The longer apron symbolises that the girl has now become a woman,” he explained. “But where are they now?” asked Marelize.“TheKhoekhoe as a culture, and more specifically the groups who lived in the Limpopo basin, have all but disappeared. They were most probably assimilated by the groups who moved in from the north and the ones coming up from the south. Even groups who moved in much later, such as the Vhangona, were mostly absorbed by groups such as the Vhavenda, who moved in from the north in the 14th and 15th centuries,” Edwin answered. By now it was getting late, and Edwin knew that they still had some hiking to do before they would reach the camp site at Medike. “Let’s move on and head for the showers,” he urged them on. “And tonight it’s Lee’s turn to tell us how she was scarred,” he added, looking back at her with a smile. He wasn’t quite sure, but something about her seemed to be a bit reticent to share bits of herself with the others. He suspected she had been hurt and she might not be ready for a shareandtell session.

I was so confused!” The pain on her face seemed to intensify, making her appear even more vulnerable. “He went back to helping me move around, although there was no need. I’d grown stronger. I felt like shouting at him for his selfish actions, but my heart … my heart favoured him and failedLee’sme.”words caused a few uncomfortable cringes from her audience, as if hitting home hard. “Then, one day, out of the blue, he told me he loved me. I knew this, but the sound of the words made my head spin. I felt that he was too heavy a burden for me to carry. But I said yes … no-one had ever loved me before, and despite everything he’d done, I convinced myself that things would get better,” she said, her face showing a mixture of hope and regret. “I accepted him back into my life as my partner. We spent three years together - of course, with highs and lows, but we were one. Inseparable. One day, something happened that was supposed to make us The Inseparable Inseparables but broke everything we had built together.” The wistful smile resurfaced, somehow made more poignant by the flickering flames of the fire. “Two men came to our faculty to introduce us to Nature Captured, an international competition. You had to find something beautiful in nature, take a good photograph of it, write a creative text inspired by it, submit it on their website and then they would choose the best entry. The entrants who submitted the best one would receive prize money and a few adventure-inspired trips around the world.” Her face lit up, showing her enthusiasm for her work and perhaps the prospect of travelling and adventure. “With our connection and the passion for nature he had instilled in me, we entered the competition as a team. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to move around effectively during the trip if we were to win. But he said: ‘My hands will take care of everything,’ and I believed him. “We complemented each other in everything we did, as if I was the lock and he was just the right key. He took care of the photography aspect, and I wrote a dramatic text with us as the protagonists. We were still the Inseparable Inseparables.” Her hands talked with her, fingers laced together to show their union. “We won,” she said proudly. “A few weeks later, we had to depart on our adventure. He had promised to come to my house to pick me up. But he did not. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I stayed calm and called a taxi to take me to the airport. When I arrived, only a few minutes remained to check in and board the plane. I made it through the gates and began hobbling to the plane. Carrying my heavy suitcase and my handbag was excruciating, but I was determined. I was almost to the plane when I finally looked up, and saw him,” Lee’s voice hitched in her throat, and she swallowed another lump. “There he was. Standing next to the plane…” Her eyes started brimming. “I hopped as fast as I could, confused, but certain that we’d crossed our wires; thinking he was waiting for me. But no … he was waiting for a slender, curvaceous lady who was busy tying her shoelaces. Before I could reach them, he took her hand and kissed her passionately. Then, with a single, pitying look over his shoulder, he led her up the plane’s stairway.” The tears she had held back for so long flooded her eyes and ran over her cheeks. “I froze. I felt my tongue go numb, as if I had just been struck by lightning. I reached into my pocket to look for my phone, to find out if he had sent me a message. There it was: ‘I am sorry for this. I know we worked together to win, but I thought hard about this, and I feel that I do not have the right resources to take care of you during the trip. But I left all the money we won in your account.’ As if that would explain everything. “With my hands trembling and tears flowing, I responded: ‘Your love is the only resource we need!’ But the message did not go through - he had blocked me. “The plane took off. He had simply replaced me. Flown away with his new love. But he left me with a love of nature and adventure. Over time, with the help of my physiotherapist and regular exercises, my body has become stronger and I can do a lot more than I used to. I challenge myself. I go on adventures to nearby forests from time to time. I am currently studying to become a tourism marketing manager. It still hurts, but he broke me to build me. “Anyway, that’s my scar - invisible to the naked eye but still achy at times.”

Zwothe Thothori is 17 years old and a Grade 12 student at Ridgeway College. “I live in Nzhelele. I am quite a reserved person - this helps me absorb the finer details of life to help me understand the inner workings of the world and my place in the universe,” she says. Zwothe says writing helps her to express and relate her emotions. “I see writing as a crucial aspect of my life. Even though I plan on studying medicine next year, writing will always be a significant part of my life.”

Waarom sal jy nie daardie pad bewandel nie? Ds. Etienne van Staden (NG Kerk Soutpansberg) Ek is ... die Weg, die Waarheid en die Lewe
