Family of six wiped out in motor accident at Hammanskraal

By Kaizer Nengovhela Residents of the areas around Vuwani and Vhembe are still shocked after the death of six people, a father and mother and their four children, who were killed in a horrifying accident on the N1 north near Hammanskraal on Sunday.

The Ramulifho family members were on their way to Gauteng from Tshimbupfe-Malonga, when their sedan collided head-on with an oncoming truck. The family were residents of Tshimbupfe-Malonga in the Vuwani area, and all died instantly.

Traffic came to a halt while rescue

workers tried to retrieve the mangled wreck. Traffic police had to battle to clear the road of curious onlookers who blocked the road in a bid to have a glimpse of the scene.

The deceased are Mr Takalani Booi Ramulifho (53) and his wife, Elsie (47), daughter Precious (19) and three sons, Vincent (16), Trevor (14) and Rofhiwa Emmanuel (6) Ramulifho.

A family representative, Mr Samuel Ramulifho, said that the family had accepted the loss, although it was difficult to cope with. “We understand and accept that our beloved children are gone, but it will be very difficult for us to live without them. It

is also important to acknowledge the community´s support since we were greeted with the bad news. God has done his will,” he said.

He also thanked the traditional leaders and government members who visited the family for their support during this difficult time.

Chief Livhuwani Matsila, who pledged assistance with the funeral, visited the family on Tuesday and expressed his condolences to the family of the victims and said they would be sorely missed. He added that the community members around the Vuwani area were deeply touched with the horror of the accident.

“The family members of the victims

need our support in hard times like these, and we hope accidents of this nature, which can be prevented, will never again take place on our roads,” he said.

Matsila said although the family, friends and community accepted what had happened, it would be difficult to forget the horrific deaths that had robbed the community of energetic residents.

The executive mayor of the Vhembe Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, expressed his condolences to the family and said that their loved ones would always be remembered.

He said that the family members were totally devastated by the horrific

accident. “Understandably, it is very difficult to continue with everyday life after such a traumatic experience and the family needs support,” he said.

Nenguda has urged members of the bereaved families and all stakeholders involved in the preparations for the funerals to be united and work together with their municipalities to ensure that they received a dignified burial.

Woman disappears at Mabangeni

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The South African Police Service in Giyani are investigating a case of a missing person, following the disappearance of an 18-year-old woman, Theon Athivhone Mangombe, from Homu 14b village in Mabangeni.

Mangombe was last seen at one of the local

holiday resorts on 31 December last year, at about 23:00.

According to information provided to the police, she allegedly remained behind with an unknown man when her friends left. The man apparently promised to bring her home, but she had since disappeared. The police’s search operation for the missing woman at the homes of close friends and relatives was conducted without success.

More water tankers for the VDM

By Silas Nduvheni In an attempt to respond much faster to water shortages in the Vhembe area, the district municipality has bought three new water tankers.

VDM’s executive mayor, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, said this was the right step forward as the new tankers would ease the pressure on the existing water trucks that they had in the

region.

He was speaking a fortnight ago when the new tankers were handed over, “which will help in dealing with challenges of the delivery of water in communities”.

At a cost of R7,5 million, the three new water trucks are fitted with the capacity of 6 000 litres of water and a compartment for 500 litres of foam and a rear-mounted water pump.

“We had the challenge of

having to stretch our existing water trucks throughout the Vhembe region and this proved strenuous in some instances.

There are times when the pipes burst and communities are left without water, but the tankers will then be called for assistance,” Nenguda added.

He said the three water tankers would be distributed to provide service in the Collins Chabane, Musina and Makhado municipalities.

Four Zimbabweans in court on housebreaking charges

Four undocumented Zimbabwean citizens appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Monday (13th) facing charges of housebreaking, theft and the illegal possession of firearms.

The four are Blessing Mutuvira Shumba, Magiga Reward Chauke,

James Simango and Kavin Moyo.

Shumba (25), Chauke (28) and Simango (42) appeared before magistrate Marcel Pieterse at Court B for what was termed a spree of housebreakings in Louis Trichardt since October last year until January this year. They were also found in possession of several firearms.

Magistrate Pieterse postponed

their case to 10 February to allow for further investigations. They were all remanded in custody.

Moyo (24), a married man who came into the country illegally, appeared in Court C. He was charged with stealing shoes at the local Jet Store. He is also in the country illegally. Moyo admitted guilt.

Asked by the presiding magistrate

Bennie Smith why he was in the country, Moyo said he was looking for employment. He also testified that he had stolen the shoes because he wanted to wear them.

Magistrate Smith slapped Moyo with a R1 000 fine or 90 days in prison for stealing the shoes and for being in the country illegally he was told that he would be deported.

“Let us support the youth and children in our community, so that they do not engage in drugs and any other unbecoming activities,” said Osborn Murendeni Posha from the Shayandima area in Thohoyandou.

Posha and nine of his friends are former learners from the Khwevha Commercial School. After realising the deteriorating state of the school’s infrastructure, Posha and his group decided to paint the Grade 8, 9 and staff room blocks during their December holiday.

“We all received our education from this school. During our time,

the infrastructure was good, but now it’s deteriorating. We would like to keep the school infrastructure attractive. As a group of former students, we organised a project to paint the blocks and staff room,” said Posha.

The group donated money for buying paint and other material to be used for painting.

“We realised that some of our members were unable to contribute money, so they actually did the painting. The group have further plans for the community and the school,” he said. “Our aim is to give career guidance to matric learners.

We understand some of them need guidance,” said Posha.

“The insurance repudiated the claim and to date we are still servicing the monthly instalments of the said Audi,” said Rita Dee. “As I respond to [Makhadzi’s allegations that I am not paying her], I am in the process of obtaining the settlements for both cars as it only makes a business sense to me that she should pay off the cars she caused me to finance under my company as we all know that entertainment industry is a high risk business,” Rita Dee stated.

She pleaded “with fellow South Africans and/or anyone who is engaging themselves in threatening my life and my properties to desist from doing so as I will take harsh legal steps in protecting my life and brand”.

In concluding her media statement, Rita Dee wrote: “Any legal process which may be directed to me or Rita Dee Entertainment will be vigorously defended. In trust I remain.”

Meanwhile, Limpopo Mirror called Makhadzi, who said that she was very busy and that interview questions should be sent to her WhatsApp number. This was subsequently done on Tuesday. By 10:00 on Wednesday, Makhadzi had not responded to the questions and her phones had been switched off.

However, the vibrant singer seems to have found some happiness in a new purchase – a new car. Social media are ablaze with an image of Makhadzi posing in front a red Mercedes Benz sports car and her friends and fans are congratulating her on her “new car”.

“Keep focused and you will always achieve,” says Rivoni’s top matric

By Bernard Chiguvare “I lost my eyesight at the age of 12, but that did not stop my dream of studying law at any recognised university in South Africa,” says Tiyane Mbendzani, one of the top 2019 matric performers.

Mbendzani matriculated from the Rivoni School for the Blind near Elim and his excellent marks placed him in the top 30 performers in the province.

The top-performing learner hails from Xigalo village, Malamulele. His mother died when he was four years old and at the age of 15 his father also passed away. His sister took care of him all the years until he completed his final matric exams last year.

“My sister is unemployed.

She tried to do everything in her power to let me get an education, although I also got relief from a disability grant,” said the 19-year-old Mbendzani.

When he was in Grade 5, he lost his sight and could no longer be accommodated in a normal school. In 2012, his father enrolled him at the Rivoni School for the Blind.

Mbendzani faced challenges both at home and at school, but these never deterred him from focusing, reading books and gaining knowledge.

“We had to go for long hours without food at home at times, and at school I really wanted to use braille to help me with my studies. This never stopped me from putting all my effort into my learning,” said Mbendzani.

It all paid dividends and last year he obtained distinctions in economics, business studies, Xitsonga, history and English.

Mbendzani has been accepted by the University of Johannesburg to study law in 2020.

“It’s my dream come true.

I love law,” he said, adding that he was not sure about his university fees. When Limpopo Mirror spoke to Mbendzani, he was waiting to go for an interview for a bursary offered by the Phalaborwa Mining company.

Bodies of mother and son discovered

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The police in Thohoyandou have opened a case of murder and started an inquest after the burnt and lifeless bodies of a 35-year-old mother and her four-year-old son were found next to a graveyard.

at Ha-Budeli village outside Thohoyandou on 4 January at about 11:30. The bodies were discovered by a passer-by, who called the police.

On arrival at the scene, the police found the two bodies and immediately commenced with investigations. The remnants of a flammable substance and a box of matches were also found

next to the bodies. A suicide note was found during further investigations.

The police are investigating the possibility that the woman might have taken the fouryear-old child to the area next to graveyard, doused him with a flammable substance and set him alight and then done the same to herself.

Emotional funeral for young leader

Ridgeway matriculants make college proud

Outstanding results were once again attained by Ridgeway College’s top achievers in the 2019 Cambridge AS and IEB exams.

“This time of year is fraught with tension and excitement as matriculants around the country await the results of their examinations.

Our Ridgeway pupils have been no different. We are proud of each and every one of them for the work they put in and for the rewards they

have reaped. We hope that each of them has achieved the marks they needed for the courses of their choice and, as we celebrate their success, we thank every member of staff who played a part in that success and the parents for their support,” said the college.

Ridgeway College had 13 candidates writing their Cambridge AS examinations. They attained a 100% BD pass rate, with 33 distinctions and 13 B symbols. Overall, their average was 76%.

The college’s top student was

Emlyn Foord, who attained a distinction in six subjects, namely Afrikaans, English language, biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. “Emlyn’s average was an incredible 85% and we congratulate her warmly on these fantastic results as our top Cambridge achiever,” said the college.

Three AS students got four distinctions, namely Zaynah Aboo (biology, physics, accounting and mathematics), Marco Marcos (Afrikaans, biology, chemistry and physics) and Tendani Mukhithi (chemistry, physics, accounting and mathematics), while Thendo Lobengo (physics, accounting and mathematics) and Neha Patel (biology, physics and mathematics) each attained three distinction.

A couple of college students also walked away with two distinctions.

They were Nkesana Baloyi (physics and mathematics), Naho Maduwa (physics and mathematics), Gordon McGaffin (physics and mathematics) and Nkhaviso Mdaka (accounting and mathematics).

Ridgeway College also celebrated their IEB (Independent Examination Board) results, where 21 of their 24 candidates attained a bachelor’s degree pass and 24 subject distinctions and 22 B symbols.

Remember, cancer can be treated - Matibe

By Mbulaheni Ridovhona After discovering that they have cancer, most people think that they will die soon, but a 29-year-old cancer survivor, Ipfani Matibe from Mufulwi Village, has another story to tell.

In June 2017, Matibe was diagnosed with a rare kind of cancer, sarcoma. This type of cancer grows in connective tissue cells that connect or support other kinds of tissue in a body. These tumours are most common in the bones, muscles, tendons, cartilage, nerves, fat, and blood vessels of the arms and legs.

“In March 2016, I realised I had developed a lump on the back of my knee. I didn’t think it was a big deal and I ignored it, with the hope that it would disappear, but it didn’t. I then noticed that it was growing. I decided to consult the doctor, who checked it out and said it was probably a blood clot and couldn’t perform any kind of test since I was pregnant at the time,” Matibe said.

Although it was not painful, the lump kept growing. After giving birth to her baby, Huande, she went to the clinic and she was given a letter to go to the hospital. Because she was stubborn, she opted to keep the letter and not go to the hospital, hoping that one day she would wake up with the lump gone.

“I got myself admitted at Tembisa Hospital in June 2017. Everything was happening so fast that I could not process what was going on.

Blood samples were taken for testing and an X-ray was done. The results came back and I was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer. I have a family background of breast cancer and blood cancer and I knew other types of cancers, but I had never heard of sarcoma cancer.”

The doctor explained to her everything she needed to know about this type of cancer, and she kept a positive attitude all through this shocking discovery. “I was told I would go for a scan to determine if the cancer had spread or not. The doctor told me that because of the speed with which it had been growing, the chance was 80% that they would have to remove the whole leg. Again, I took the positive out of the situation and told myself that even if my leg were to be cut off, if I could still raise my daughter, then I was good. I went for the scan and while I was in the waiting room, I prayed for a miracle. The scan results came back and, guess what, God had come through for me and

Author questions justice system on rape cases

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The abduction and rape of a sibling had seared one woman's heart so much that she felt moved to respond to the heart-breaking incident with pen and paper – and this is how the publication of She Cries was born.

Rofhiwa Masuwa, who has a degree in nursing science and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in the same study field, is a registered professional nurse working in a primary-health-care facility.

“In 2016, while I was in the library studying for my exams, I received a call

from my mother that my younger sister had been abducted and raped on her way back from school,” she said. “I was hurt and disappointed.”

She added that salt was rubbed into her wound when the criminal case against the suspect “went cold, even though the culprit was known. This and all other cases of the abuse of women and children that are being reported daily evoked my emotions and I decided to write a book”.

She Cries deals with what women should do to prevent being abused, especially in their relationships.

It also talks about the cultural principles and

misinterpreted Christian teachings that instil the wrong morals in men and exacerbate the acts of women abuse.

“I hope that the movie will help parents to understand the motivation behind what they may refer as irrational decisions that young people make.”

He added that he hoped that young people in Mash’s position could perhaps seek alternative solutions for their challenges after watching the movie.

Back TO to BACK school SCHOOL Phalaphala visited Shakadza Malilele High The acting station manager of Phalaphala FM, Ms Sharon Ravele, encouraged pupils to study hard from the first day of the school year. The station visited Shakadza Malilele High in the remote area of Niani in the Niani West circuit on Wednesday (15th).

“The main aim of the station’s Back to school campaign is to ensure that learners will be in class on the first day, learning, and teachers will be in class, teaching,” said Ravele.

When schools reopened, the station embarked on a journey to motivate pupils from various schools in the region. According to Ravele, they motivate the pupils to focus on their studies.

She said if pupils were inspired to focus on their studies, nothing would be able to hold them back.

As part of the station’s campaign, Ravele told the pupils that they were the cream of the nation and urged them to read more to acquire knowledge to develop their communities. “It will be a mistake not to thank the parents and guardians for spending the little they have on the education of their children. Most of the parents in this part of the country are unemployed, but they have done everything to make sure that their children receive education.”

She said that pupils needed to be given moral support that encouraged them to stay away from committing crimes. “It’s important for us to tell the children about the dangers of involving themselves in crime,” she said.

She discouraged the pupils from indulging in acts of crime, because they may eventually have to battle life with a criminal record. She stated that a problem existed of youths who frequented taverns and committed heinous crimes in the middle of the night when they were coming from those taverns.

“Stop destroying your future and try to focus on your schoolwork. Don’t do things that you’ll regret tomorrow.” She congratulated those who passed last year and encouraged those who had not made it to go back to the class to work hard.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The 20-year-old Ravele Anwani was crowned the first Miss Pick Me Up 2019/20 during a beauty pageant that was recently held in the Vleifontein Community Hall.

A resident of Mashamba village, Anwani said that she wanted to be an example to all the girls and show them that one’s background did not determine one’s future. She believes that nothing will stop her from realising her dream of becoming Miss Universe.

“Miss Pick Me Up 2019/2020 has been one of the greatest achievements I have accomplished in 2019,” she said. “I’ve always wished to own such a title from my childhood, but I did not really have motivation, until I came to realise that motivation was not what I needed but the courage to step up, dream bigger and believe in myself.”

Rendani Tshibvumo (18) was the first princess, Vhuthu Ramakuela (17) the second princess and Winnie Mashaba (18) won the public choice award.

The Pick Me Up founder, Mpho Lemmy Masia, extended his gratitude to all stakeholders who had made sure that the event was a success.

The 22-year-old from Ha-Matsa village in Nzhelele is the brains behind Priscah’s Closet, which deals with the design and manufacture of clothes for women. “I was inspired to go into this field after identifying a gap in the market for fashionable items for people who are thin or plus-sized. The market usually has a generic range of sizes when it comes to certain items and if they are ever available, the stock is very limited. I wanted to be the person who bridges that gap and uses it as an added advantage to gain access into the fashion market,” Priscah said.

Like most girls, the selftaught fashion designer has always been into fashion. “I started off as a model and I’ve also drawn inspiration from different brands. I would go through magazines or watch fashion channels and some of

the stuff blew me away. Some of the designs I found to be basic or rather too cheap aesthetically and lacking depth in concept and design. This made me realize how much I needed to ensure that I find a way to enter this market as opposed to just watching and criticizing.

I decided to take initiative by putting my own work out to the world,” she said.

Fashion design was not really the plan, as passionate about it as she might be. “I honestly feel like fashion chose me, as far as passion goes. I only wanted to do it as a hobby, but I am now determined to make it a full-time career. And part of the reason why I am so prepared to take such a massive lifestyle decision is due to all the positive feedback I am receiving from clients,” she explained.

Her family is very supportive, she said. “They have an intention-fuelled effort to show me how much they want me to succeed in this journey and that is what really counts. Many creatives suffer because their

families do not give them the necessary support and I can only imagine how cold that feels. My friends are also really supportive, and this is also because I am very strategic when it comes to the friends I choose.

I like people who can bring value into my life.”

Even though the brand is growing at an exponential rate, she said the growth came with challenges. “My current challenge is space. I need a big space, so that I can expand the brand, get more machines and be able to train and employ people. Funding this kind of expansion is also a challenge, but I am always looking for the means to overcome any challenge.”

She wants to see her brand operating in big cities and competing at an international level. “I want my brand to play a visible role in the country’s economy in terms of improving the standard of living in people’s lives through creating employment,” she said.

Thovhele Ratshibvumo II Rammbuda said that a village without a traditional leader was doomed. By installing a new chief for Domboni la Ha-Rammbuda, it meant that communities would have a leader to whom they must report their grievances without fear.

“From today onwards, the communities in Domboni must come here at the chief ’s kraal to get services such as the official stamp of the traditional leader when applying for an identity document or opening new bank accounts, amongst others. I urge you to respect the new chief, because he has been given power to rule by me as senior traditional leader in Ha-Rammbuda,” added Thovhele Rammbuda.

Rammbuda was speaking on Saturday, shortly after he had installed Chief Nditsheni Malise as new traditional leader of Domboni la Ha-Rammbuda village near Madimbo.

He urged the new chief to dedicate himself to serve his communities without taking sides as he would be the chief of all the people.

During the ceremony, Ms Dzulani Ndou was named khadzi and Mr Erick Malise was named ndumi.

In response Chief Nditsheni Malise pledged to give his dedication in serving the community, seeking wisdom from God to rule without taking any side. Malise said the communities in his area were suffering from travelling long distances to places such as Madimbo and Musina to access government services and urged the Musina Municipality to install electricity at the offices in his villages, so that his communities could get services.

Representing the traditional leaders of Ha-Rambuda, Chief Nndavheleseni Netshitandani welcomed the new chief in the Ha-Rammbuda Tribal Council. He urged him to attend the imbizo, which is normally held in the Thovhele’s kraal in Dzimauli village, just a stone’s throw from his village, regularly.

Phatu wants to help keep women and children safe

By Mbulaheni Ridovhona South Africa is no longer a safe place for women and children to live in. Many of them are being kidnapped, raped and killed daily, said a co-founder of the organisation The Movement, Mr Phatu Madima.

In an effort keep women and children safe, a group of five young people who call themselves The Movement have designed a schoolbag with a built-in panic button, called Navigator, which will play a vital role in curbing the scourge of kidnappings and killings.

Madima said: “…the bag has a sim card and a caller option that sends the location of the victim.

The reason why we created this bag is to reduce the ever-increasing number

of kidnappings of children in our country. The bag has a panic button which is connected to the phone.

Basically, when the parents buy the bag, we take the cellphone number of the parent or legal guardian and connect it to the panic button”.

“The panic button can alert you on your cellphone when your kid or wife is in danger and sends you a location. It also has a call option where you just call the panic button to check on your child. We are losing our sisters, aunts and mothers every day. We just need a way to protect them and save them from being kidnaped, raped and killed,” he added.

He said making the bag was not easy. “We are group of young boys and we don’t have money,” he said. “We are doing everything by ourselves, but now we are looking for anyone who wants to help us or invest in this African dream. We are seeking financial assistance from businesspeople and the government.”

The event participants varied from young and old community members to leaders and pastors and even included the magarabas (those who had come home from other provinces).

In the division for SAB teams, Manavhela Black Aces beat Zamenkomste FC 2-1 in the final. Manyeleti were too strong for Zamenkomste Happy Boys and beat them 2-1 in the final of Malfa. The matches took place

Madombidzha Try Again have themselves to blame for a costly 2-1 defeat in their Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators league match against Muraleni Young Rebellions at Madombidzha on Saturday.

This was the first defeat for Try Again since the league started in October last year.

Try Again’s coach, Mr Scara Phathela, said the team should have collected maximum points at home. “We missed brilliant chances and we are going back to the drawing board to come up

with new plans to win the next match,” said Phathela. He added that they had let themselves down with soft goals.

He praised Rebellions for their victory but felt that their own defence was poor.

The coach of Young Rebellions, Mr Chadwick Raliphada, said that Try Again was a good team of young players, but winning the away match had boosted the morale of the team.

The scorers of Rebellions were Azwitamisi Mphephu and Vulani Baloyi, and the goal of Try Again was scored by Tshepiso Manavhela.

By Frank Mavhungu The 2020 edition of the Nedbank Cup KO competition was officially launched during a ceremony at the Nedbank offices in Johannesburg last Thursday evening.

As usual, all PSL teams, eight from the GladAfrica Championship Division and another eight from the amateur level will take part in this year’s competition.

The draw for the Round-32 stage was conducted during the ceremony. Although the opening matches will be played in three weeks’ time, a number of fixtures are the talk of the town. The match between Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits will be a final before the actual final.

Orlando Pirates will enjoy the home-ground advantage.

The Pretoria derby between Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United is expected to attract a huge number of spectators. Either Baroka FC or Polokwane City will not take part in the Round-16 stage of the competition. They drew each other in the last-32 stage.

The KZN derby between Richards Bay and Uthongathi FC will be staged at

Royal Eagles will host Cape Umoya United at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban.
