So, daar is noemenswaardige verskille.
“My persoonlik gevoel is ja, dit is normaal.
Hierdie gemiddeld is reeds oorskry.
Daar is altyd ‘n gevaar
Levubu is skuins genoeg.
The death toll in Monday afternoon’s horror bus accident on the N1 north just before the Hendrik Verwoerd tunnels had risen to 21 by Wednesday morning. The deceased were mostly commuters returning home after work, with survivors now claiming that the accident could have been caused by reckless and negligent driving on the part of the bus driver.
The accident occurred just after 17:00 on 13 February. According to a media statement issued by the provincial Department of Transport and Community Safety shortly after the accident, the driver of a cash-in-transit vehicle had allegedly lost control and collided head-on with the Mabirimisa bus. The bus capsized and rolled down a steep embankment into a nearby river, trapping many of the passengers underneath it.
Following the department’s press release, several people (including survivors of the accident) have come forward, claiming that the bus driver was indeed at fault, accusing him of speeding and reckless overtaking.

serious injuries,” he said. When contacted about the allegations, Mr Robert Mabirimisa (speaking on behalf of the bus company) firstly stated that they were shocked about the loss of so many lives. “We are deeply concerned when the lives of our commuters are lost,” he said and expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
As for the allegations about the driver, he said that he was not able to respond. “I am not in any position to give you a comment as we are still going to conduct our own investigation,” he said. He did, however, add that he had worked with the specific driver (who survived the accident) for more than seven years. “Never once was he involved in an accident. This is the first one,” Mabirimisa said. “When God gave us these buses, we prayed that we would not have accidents as we are carrying the lives of the people. We are very saddened that so many people died in our bus, but this is beyond my powers and we cannot even question why it happened in our bus,” said Mabirimisa.
“I saw the driver of the bus driving at high speed when overtaking another vehicle into the lane of oncoming traffic. He tried to swerve but, unfortunately, it was too late. From there I just heard a loud bang, and moments later I found myself lying under the roof of the bus, trapped with the bus on top of us”
One of the survivors the newspaper spoke to was Ms Maria Thabeli. “I saw the driver of the bus driving at high speed when overtaking another vehicle into the lane of oncoming traffic. He tried to swerve but, unfortunately, it was too late. From there I just heard a loud bang, and moments later I found myself lying under the roof of the bus, trapped with the bus on top of us,” she said.
Another survivor the newspaper spoke to was Mr Freddy Salani. He had boarded the bus at 16:30, never suspecting his journey home to end in a deadly collision. He also claimed that the bus driver was speeding when he recklessly overtook the vehicles in front of him. After the impact, Salani said he did not know what happened next. “I only heard the bang when the bus crashed into other vehicles. I could not see, because I was seated at the back,” said Salani. He was thankful to be alive. “All I can say is that God is great, because He saved me from death or
Since the accident, messages of condolence to bereaved families have been streaming in. These include messages of condolence from the MEC for Transport and Community Safety and the executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda.
The chairperson of the Zoutpansberg Community Development Forum, Mr Patrick Sikhutshi, also expressed his shock. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased during this time of grief, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured ones. This organisation shares the heartache and is saddened that so many lives continue to be lost on South African roads,” said Sikhutshi.
In the meantime, provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo urged motorists to be extra cautious when driving. He condemned any form of reckless driving, especially speeding, by drivers along the roads. “The cause of this accident is still not clear at this stage and investigations are still continuing,” said Mojapelo.
The 19-year-old Jimmy Takalani Musandiwa from Louis Trichardt had an experience of a lifetime on Friday, 10 February, when he teed off alongside the President of the Republic of South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa, in the annual Presidential Golf Challenge.
The Presidential Golf Challenge takes place annually and followed the State of the Nation Address, which took place on 9 February. This year, the golf challenge was held at the Atlantic Beach Golf Estate at Melkbosstrand, Cape Town.
The Presidential Golf Challenge this year rallied support for the Adopt-a-School Foundation, which was established in 2002 to support the delivery of enhanced and conducive teaching environments. The model that the foundation focuses on is developing four critical areas within the school environment, namely leadership,
curriculum, infrastructure, and social and learner well-being in adopted schools.
Jimmy only found out the day before the tournament that he would be teaming up with the President for the tournament. This sent his stress levels through the roof. He stated, however, that although he had been quite nervous in the beginning - taking in the venue and other big names accompanying him - he had only needed a few shots to become comfortable and find his groove. He found the situation quite intimidating at first, considering that President Ramaphosa was playing with him, but soon realised that this was only “another day at the office” for him and settled into his game.
Jimmy said he saw himself in a new light after the game, setting new expectations and higher standards for himself.
The other two big names teeing off with Jimmy and the President were Bantu Holomisa
Amy Iris Cooper, contestant of the Mrs South Africa Pageant, is doing our community proud. She has also been chosen as one of the 100 semi-finalists at the National Casting event at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg earlier this month. “I am elated and excited about receiving this news,” says Cooper.
“We are blown away by the number of high-quality entries that we received this year, and we are deeply appreciative to have met so many wonderful women from all walks of life,” says Joani Johnson, CEO of Mrs SA. She adds that the casting event was exceptionally difficult as a substantial number of entrants have what is necessary to make a success of the programme. “We are proud to work alongside so many strong, formidable, and inspirational married women, and to empower them through our pillars of community, self-development, and networking to be the leaders and social game-changers that we need in this country,” Johnson says.
year for work, and I decided to keep myself busy by entering.” As part of her journey, she hopes to learn new skills to forge a new future as an active participant in life.
Cooper was born in Eswatini (previously Swaziland) and was a first princess in the Miss Swaziland pageant in 2005-2006. She attended a modelling school during her high school career and worked as a model in the United Kingdom for approximately two years. She has an advanced diploma in hotel and restaurant management and worked as a banquet manager for several boutique hotels in Ballito and Durban. “This is where I met my husband,” she says. They have been at the Air Force Base Makhado since 2011.
“Women forget that they are always serving – serving their husbands and their children –but never themselves. They are the biggest cheerleaders of their families. We don’t always think of the women behind the curtains –these women and wives need to be empowered, they need to expand their service.”
“I realised that one can become very secluded by staying home. Women forget that they are always serving – serving their husbands and their children – but never themselves. They are the biggest cheerleaders of their families. We don’t always think of the women behind the curtains – these women and wives need to be empowered, they need to expand their service,” Cooper says.
Sharing more about her decision to enter, Cooper says: “Being a military wife and stayat-home mother to two beautiful kids has been something I have dedicated the past 11 years of my life to. I have decided to join Mrs South Africa to unlock the undiscovered greatness that is Amy. My husband is a fighter pilot and we reside at the Air Force Base Makhado. He is away for a
“On my agenda is to help women realise who they are. It is important to let them know not to forget themselves. I am passionate about being a master of ceremonies, public speaking, and motivational talks. Part of my goals during this journey as semi-finalist would be to highlight the role of spouses in the military. Too often the wives are overshadowed – we need to hold it together!” she says. Above all, she enjoys reading, doing puzzles, travelling and food. She loves to uplift women and is the “go-to” person for great advice. “Amy Iris Cooper fully embodies the values that Mrs SA holds most dear and is representative of our tagline for the year: #EveryWoman. We look forward to going on this journey with her and her fellow sisters,” concludes Johnson.
“It would be great if some small businesses out there would like to sponsor or support me during this journey. Any support, whether it be monetary, make-up, shoes, clothes, or hair, would be highly appreciated,” adds Cooper. (member of the National Assembly of South Africa) and Charles Molapisi (CEO of MTN South Africa). The most memorable moment for Jimmy was, however, shaking President Ramaphosa’s hand and enjoying a normal conversation with him about the day ahead of them. As for the President’s golfing skills, Jimmy (playing from a seven handicap) said that President Ramaphosa played an average came of golf, but that his game would improve considerably if he spent more time on the golf course.
Jimmy was born, raised and still resides in Louis Trichardt and matriculated from Louis
Trichardt High School in 2022. After taking an interest in the game of golf in Grade 4, he has grown to love the sport. Although he still lives in his home town, he is not wasting time as he spends most of it on the golf course at the Soutpansberg Golf Club, where he is a member, bettering his skills. Jimmy said that one would most probably find him there, because he was preparing for his next tournament and that he needed to be at his best when gameday came.
As for the Presidential Challenge, Jimmy finished fifth in the A Division on Stableford points.

Several damaged bridges and many roads in Vhembe’s rural areas have had to be closed since Friday, 10 February, because of the heavy rain that fell over the area.
Residents who live in slippery mountain areas had to park their vehicles near the main tar roads because they were unable to reach their homes by car. The affected areas include Makwarani, Maraxwe, Vhutalu, Tshipako, Tshiwani, Tshidzivhe, Tshilungwi, Mudzidzi, Tshakhuma and others.
Tannie Sarie was bekend vir haar kookvernuf.
is.
Motorists who use the main road from the mentioned areas had to drive with great caution as parts of the roads were badly damaged by the rains. Trees were uprooted in some of the hilly areas along the roads.
Learners from Tswinga and Muledane were forced to cross the still-flooding Dzindi River on foot. Many parents accompanied their children to help them cross the river, out of fear that they might be swept away by the current. “The water was above our knees, and we just clung to each other’s hands,” said one of the learners, Takalani
Mushiana.
The spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said that all four municipalities under Vhembe had been greatly affected by the rains so far. Some areas have no water as pipes were washed away. He said that the affected communities were now forced to use alternative roads to get to work or school and run daily errands.
“Most of the bridges have structural problems, while others are under water. We have sent out a disaster team, and we are visiting the different areas affected by the floods. We are pleading with parents to warn their children not to swim in the dams or play near the rivers, because there are a lot of crocodiles,” said Ralushai.
He warned residents who live close to rivers and streams to evacuate to a safer place or higher spot when the water level rises. “When you cross a flowing river where water reaches above your ankles, turn back and use an alternative route. Never try to walk, swim or drive in swift-flowing water as it can sweep you off your feet. Do not drive over a low-water bridge if the water is flowing strongly across it,” he cautioned.
Crime Prevention
Limpopo police arrested 11 cigarette smugglers during the early morning hours of Thursday, 9 February, following a car chase along the Piesanghoek road.
Members of the Limpopo Tracking Team and Capricorn Highway Patrol received information that 10 vehicles travelling in a convoy between Musina and Louis Trichardt were smuggling illicit cigarettes from Zimbabwe to South Africa. The police caught up with the convoy along the Piesanghoek road after the smugglers had taken a detour to avoid police detection.
The suspects then sped off at a high speed and a car chase ensued. Five vehicles were stopped by the police with the
help of members of the Louis Trichardt Farm Watch. Unfortunately, the occupants of the other five vehicles managed to evade arrest by escaping.
The 11 suspects arrested were found to be undocumented Zimbabwean nationals who initially tried to engage in a fistfight with the police, but they were ultimately subdued and apprehended.
Upon further investigation, the five vehicles were found loaded with illicit cigarettes to the value of just over R426 000. The vehicles (two BMWs, a Ford Territory, a Nissan Pathfinder and an Audi A4) were seized by the police, along with the cigarettes.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the members for a well-coor-
dinated operation that led to the arrests and thanked the members of the Farm Watch for assisting the police in the fight against crime.
The 11 suspects, aged between 24 and 43, were scheduled to appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on 10 February, on charges of dealing in and being in possession of illicit cigarettes, contravention of the Immigration Act, reckless and negligent driving, driving a motor vehicle without a driving license (against the drivers) and resisting arrest.
In the meantime, the hunt for the other suspects is continuing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Warrant Officer Phaladi Makola on 082 749 2233 or phone the Crime Stop number 086 001 0111.
Kompetisie
082 603 2419 of 015 516 4997 (tydens kantoorure).

Vintage Car News
The region’s vintage car and -motorcycle enthusiasts want to start the year’s activities with an outing to the Pecan Farm Guesthouse, situated on the Piesanghoek road, some 20 kilometres outside Louis Trichardt.
The trip to Pecan Farm is scheduled for Sunday, 19 February. The group plans on leaving from Louis Trichardt at about 10:00. They will travel in convoy along the Levubu Road. The guest farm is roughly three kilometres from the Piesanghoek turn-off, and the gravel part is in fair condition.
The venue is ideal, with huge trees creating shade where the cars can park on the lawns. A swimming pool is available and braai facilities can be arranged, should the motor enthusiasts feel like having a braai.
Lunch at the guest house can be arranged, but this will have to be done in advance. Participants are, however, welcome to bring their own snacks and drinks.
As usual, the event will be very informal and open to all vintage-vehicle enthusiasts. This is, however, a very broad concept as cars dating from the 1970s and even 1980s are nowadays considered “old”. The idea is, however, to get owners of these older vehicles to get them out

Kaartjies is beskikbaar by Weldon’s Apteek in Louis Trichardt of die padstal langs Stepa-Stone.

and if you are looking for luxury at an affordable price, then the Pro Max is definitely worth a second look and test drive.
The Pro Max 390T was launched in December as Chery’s flagship Tiggo 8 model. The newspaper took it for a test drive last Friday and was quite impressed by it, both regarding engine performance and interior and exterior design. One thing is for sure – Chery has come a long way since launching its first entry-level models on the South African market.
The Pro Max was launched to compete against other luxury models such as the Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV, and it does not disappoint. The powerful two-litre engine is equipped with a seven-speed DCT automatic transmission with electric-assisted power steering and delivers an impressive 187kW of power at 5 500rpm and 390Nm of torque at between 2 000 and 4 000rpm. It has a gutsy engine with fast acceleration, almost no turbo lag and smooth gearbox transmission for both speed and towing (the Pro Max has a 1 500kg towing capacity). Fuel consumption is 7,4 litres per 100km on a combined cycle (claimed).
As mentioned, Chery have stepped up their game on both the body work and interior and exterior design with
sturdy body panels and luxury, stitched-leather upholstery. The cabin is spacious, with lots of backseat leg and head space, even for a six-foot-plus backseat passenger.
One of the cool selling points of the Pro Max is that everything is voice activated, from opening the sunroof, tuning to your favourite radio station or opening or closing a window. Keyless entry with remote and push-button start are more luxury features, allowing you to start your car from the comfort of your house and the Pro Max adjusting to your driving preferences, including climate control that comes standard.
Like other competitors in its class, the Pro Max also features three driving modes, including Eco, standard and sport mode – all controlled from your steering wheel or 12.3 inch digital instrument panel, as well as an 8-inch touch-screen ventilation control. It also has two wireless charging platforms for two cellphones and a top-of-the range 8-speaker Sony sound system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
The Tiggo 8 Pro Max also fea-
tures in impressive array of safety features, boasting a Euro NCAP safety rating of 5. The vehicle comes standard with six omnidirectional airbags to protect the occupants from frontal, roll-over and side-impact, with other safety features, including ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist, automatic emergency breaking, electronic stability control, traction control, 3D cameras all round and much, much more.
The Pro Max definitely features all the bells and whistles of more expensive brands of well over R1 million. Yet the Pro Max starts off at a very reasonable R599 000 to R639 000 for the top-of-the range model with sunroof. It comes with a 1 million kilometre or 10-year engine warranty, a five-year or 150 000km warranty, seven-year or 90 000km service plan and five year unlimited roadside assistance. All services are done inhouse at BB Chery Louis Trichardt.
For more information, phone BB Chery Louis Trichardt sales manager Johann Schoonbee at tel. 015 516 0294 of 066 319 0737.
Ridgeway College in Louis Trichardt held their Grade 8 induction ceremony to welcome the Grade 8 students officially into the Ridgeway College family on 7 February. During this ceremony, Grade 12 students pin a Ridgeway logo on the Grade 8 students, officially making them members of the Ridgeway community. Also as part of the induction, students sign in as Grade 8 students and light a candle to symbolise their entry into high school. In 2028, they will sign out as Grade 12 students and put out the candle’s flame to mark the conclusion of their career as Ridgeway College students, thus completing their journey. The induction ceremony was followed by a welcome braai on 10 February, hosted by the Grade 12 mentors. This function gives the Grade 8 students an opportunity to interact outside an academic sphere and officially concludes the Grade 8 orientation. “Although there were cries of joys as Grade 8 pupils could get rid of their ‘egg babies’ that they were parenting, we know our Grade 12 learners will miss insisting on being serenaded at a moment’s notice,” said Miss Micaela Shaw, the Grade 8 grade head. Pictured (front, from left to right) are Muimeleli Tseisi (Grade 12) pinning the logo of Jacinda Komana (Grade 8). Looking on at the back is head boy Thembu Tshimange. Photo supplied.

“Indien u enige verdere inligting nodig het, kontak my gerus.

Luckily, the weather held up and we were able to celebrate our athletes achievements whilst sharing a few laughs and some great food that morning. Ridgeway Preparatory remains committed to ensuring that all our learners receive the opportunity to develop in the classroom, on stage and on the track,” said principal Mr Melvin Govender.
