Fatal bus ride for 21

Allegations that driver of bus was speeding recklessly in mountain pass

The death toll in Monday afternoon’s horror bus accident on the N1 north just before the Hendrik Verwoerd tunnels had risen to 21 by Wednesday morning. The deceased were mostly commuters returning home after work, with survivors now claiming that the accident could have been caused by reckless and negligent driving on the part of the bus driver.

The accident occurred just after 17:00 on 13 February.

According to a media statement issued by the provincial Department of Transport and Community Safety shortly after the accident, the driver of a cash-in-transit vehicle had allegedly lost control and collided head-on with the Mabirimisa bus. The bus capsized and rolled down a steep embankment into a nearby river, trapping many of the passengers underneath it.

Following the department’s press release, several people (including survivors of the accident) have come forward, claiming that the bus driver was indeed at fault, accusing him of speeding and reckless overtaking.

One of the survivors the newspaper spoke to was Ms Maria Thabeli. “I saw the driver of the bus driving at high speed when overtaking another vehicle into the lane of oncoming traffic. He tried to swerve but, unfortunately, it was too late. From there I just heard a loud bang, and moments later I found myself lying under the roof of the bus, trapped with the bus on top of us,” she said.

Another survivor the newspaper spoke to was Mr Freddy Salani. He had boarded the bus at 16:30, never suspecting his journey home to end in a deadly collision. He also claimed that the bus driver was speeding when he recklessly overtook the vehicles in front of him. After the impact, Salani

said he did not know what happened next. “I only heard the bang when the bus crashed into other vehicles. I could not see, because I was seated at the back,” said Salani. He was thankful to be alive. “All I can say is that God is great, because He saved me from death or serious injuries,” he said.

When contacted about the allegations, Mr Robert Mabirimisa (speaking on behalf of the bus company) firstly stated that they were shocked about the loss of so many lives. “We are deeply concerned when the lives of our commuters are lost,” he said and expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

As for the allegations about the driver, he said that he was not able to respond. “I am not in any position to give you a comment as we are still going to conduct our own investigation,” he said.

Sinyosi family lose mother and daughter in horror bus crash on N1

The news of Monday afternoon’s bus crash in the mountain near the tunnels came as a shock to many families who had lost loved ones. For the Sinyosi family of Tshirolwe Extension 3 in Nzhelele the news was especially devastating as they had lost two of their beloved members.

Ms Shoni Sinyosi (44) and her eight-year-old

daughter, Pfufho Sinyosi, boarded the doomed bus at Louis Trichardt on their way home from work that fateful day. She worked as a manager at the Do Light bus company.

Family spokesperson Pastor Ndwamato Joseph Sinyosi said the tragedy had left the family in a lot of pain. “Shoni was a pillar of strength in the family, a unifier who participated in all family activities and was loved by all. This is a great loss, and she will always be fondly remembered,” he said.

Sinyosi further called on bus companies to service their fleets regularly and to ensure that the buses were in a roadworthy condition. He also called on traffic officials to be strict on the roadworthiness of buses.

The mother and daughter will be buried on Friday.

On Tuesday, the Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Florence Radzilani, confirmed that 21 people had already died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. Radzilani and her team visited some of the local hospitals that were treating the injured patients.

Besides the 21 passengers who passed away, 10 passengers were reported to have sustained serious injuries. Sixteen passengers escaped with moderate injuries, while 35 sustained minor injuries. Passengers with injuries were transported to the Louis Trichardt, Elim and Siloam Hospital for medical attention.

Radzilani expressed her gratitude for the speedy response of law enforcement and emergency services, and the dedication of health practitioners who are tending to the injured passengers. She also said that she would do her best to ensure that her department concluded the investigation on the accident, so that the victims could make claims against the Road Accident Fund.

Bus accident on N1 claims 21 lives

(From page 1)

He did, however, add that he had worked with the specific driver (who survived the accident) for more than seven years. “Never once was he involved in an accident. This is the first one,” Mabirimisa said. “When God gave us these buses, we prayed that we would not have accidents as we are carrying the lives of the people. We are very saddened that so many people died in our bus, but this is beyond my powers and we cannot even question why it happened in our bus,”

said Mabirimisa.

Since the accident, messages of condolence to bereaved families have been streaming in. These include messages of condolence from the MEC for Transport and Community Safety and the executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda. The chairperson of the Zoutpansberg Community Development Forum, Mr Patrick Sikhutshi, also expressed his shock. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased during this time of grief, and we wish a speedy

Unemployed Zim mother complains about excessive bill of LTT hospital

A Zimbabwean woman was left baffled when she was required to settle a bill of more than R7 000 before she could have her 10-month-old son discharged from the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital after he had undergone an operation.

The baby of Ms Yvonne Moyo from Tshikota was admitted at the hospital on 7 February this year to have a lump that had developed in his neck surgically removed. The operation was performed on 9 February, and he was supposed to be discharged the next day. When she prepared to take her child home, however, she was re-

quested to pay R7 640. She said that she was told that, if she failed to pay the amount, the hospital management would not allow her to go home.

Moyo said that she was very grateful for the surgery that now enabled her child to live like other normal children, but that she did not have that kind of money as she was unemployed. She felt certain that she was being discriminated against because she is Zimbabwean, and said that if she had been a local, they would have allowed her to go home immediately.

“My life has been turned into a nightmare. I have not had a moment of peace since I was told to pay the money. I need urgent assistance and plead

with a Good Samaritan to come to my rescue, so I can pay the hospital bill. My family depend on piece jobs and the money is too little to cover medical needs as well,” she sobbed. When Limpopo Mirror contacted the spokesperson for the Department of Health, Mr Thilivhali Muavha, for comment, he said that each and every patient must pay for services rendered at the hospital. “If the local people don’t have money, we make payment arrangements. Foreigners, however, must pay the full amount after assistance. In Moyo’s case, she signed an agreement with the hospital to pay R1 000 cash and the balance in instalments,” he said.

recovery to the injured ones. This organisation shares the heartache and is saddened that so many lives continue to be lost on South African roads,” said Sikhutshi.

In the meantime, provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo urged motorists to be extra cautious when driving. He condemned any form of reckless driving, especially speeding, by drivers along the roads. “The cause of this accident is still not clear at this stage and investigations are still continuing,” said Mojapelo.

Beloved mechanic, Lufuno Patrick Mawela laid to rest

popular mechanic at Tshisahulu Siawoadza, passed away on 4 February and was buried at the

local Dzindi graveyard on Friday, 10 February.

The 45-year-old Mawela was admitted to the Tshilidzini Hospital for two days after he had started suffering from diabetes complications two weeks ago.

The funeral was attended by relatives and friends, some from the Collins Chabane Municipality where most of his maternal family live. Members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, where he was a member, also came to pay their last respects.

Speaking during the funeral service, which was held at his home, Mawela’s uncle and former Vhembe Department of Education

Curriculum Advisor Mr Daniel Mabasa said he was

tired of burying relatives as a result of lifestyle diseases that could have been better maintained. Mabasa, who is also diabetic, urged the people to exercise regularly, eat healthy and take their medication as prescribed when they are diagnosed with diabetes. “The first thing I did when I was diagnosed was to accept that I am sick, and then I followed all the doctor’s instructions. It has been 20 years now, but many people don’t even know that I suffer from the disease. Diabetes (and unnecessary deaths) can be prevented.”

Mawela was born at Dzindi in 1977 and attended school at Dzindi Primary and Magalanngwe Secondary school. He is survived by his father, Mr Tshimangadzo George Mawela, his mother Ms Mphephu Florah Mawela, children Phindu and Dakalo Mawela, two brothers and three sisters.

Many questions after brutal killing of Ha-Gumbu leader

Residents of Ha-Gumbu

in the Mutale area are still trying to come to terms with the shocking death of their traditional leader, Vhamusanda Vho-Takalani Andries

Gumbu, who was gunned down at his home on Sunday, 12 February.

According to the family, Gumbu left his home on Sunday to visit the local hardware store. He also said that he will be visiting some relatives at Dopeni village. As he entered his house again at around 22:00 that night, he was ambushed by unknown suspects and shot several times before they fled the scene on foot.

The assailants, believed to be hired hitmen as nothing had been taken from Gumbu’s person or his home, entered the yard through a cut fence and waited for him in a nearby unfinished house.

The family spokesperson, Ms Patricia Masikhwa, said they were overwhelmed with grief.

“Gumbu was a peace-loving person who would not even hurt a fly. He drank, but he would go out and buy and come back and drink here at home.

We do not know why anybody would plan to kill him. We are left with so many unanswered questions. We are totally devastated as a family,” she said.

One of the first to arrive at the slain leader’s home on Monday (13 February) was Musina Mayor Nkhanedzeni Mawela. “We are in complete shock and lack the words to express our grief. Gumbu was one of the traditional leaders who worked with us, so that service delivery reached our people. We are left in the dark as to why someone would decide to kill him in this manner. This is a peaceful area where we never hear of such incidents. Our plea is that more resources and personnel be apportioned to the Masisi Police Station to fight crime effectively. We sincerely send

our condolences and deepest sympathy to the family in these trying times,” he said.

The incident has shaken the closely knit and peaceful village, situated close to the Zimbabwean border. The village is known as a transit route for illegal cigarettes from Zimbabwe to South Africa, a safe passage for stolen luxury vehicles from South Africa to Zimbabwe and a passage for illegal foreigners. With so many sinister activities taking place in the area, some suggest that Gumbu might have infuriated smuggling syndicates, while others speak of boundary feuds in the area.

Meanwhile, Contralesa president Kgoshi Lameck Mokoena condemned the killing, as well as those of more than 40 other traditional leaders in KwaZulu-Natal. He urged the police to use the vigour they show when a politician is killed to hunt down the killers.

The Limpopo police confirmed the incident. Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said a team of seasoned investigators had been assembled to probe the incident. “Anyone with information should urgently contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Theophilus Musumuvhi, on 064 647 4058 or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111,” he said.

The funeral for Vhamusanda Gumbu will take place on Friday.

Soutpansberg’s 19-year-old golf champ tees off with the President

The 19-year-old Jimmy Takalani Musandiwa from Louis Trichardt had an experience of a lifetime on Friday, 10 February, when he teed off alongside the President of the Republic of South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa, in the annual Presidential Golf Challenge.

The Presidential Golf Challenge takes place annually and followed the State of the Nation Address, which took place on 9 February. This year, the golf challenge was held at the Atlantic Beach Golf Estate at Melkbosstrand, Cape Town.

The Presidential Golf Challenge this year rallied support for the Adopt-a-School Foundation, which was established in 2002 to support the delivery of enhanced and conducive teaching environments. The model that the foundation focuses on is developing four critical areas within the school environment, namely leadership, curriculum, infrastructure, and social and learner well-being in adopted schools.

Jimmy only found out the day before the tournament that he would be teaming up with the President for the tournament. This sent his stress levels through the roof. He stated, however, that although he had been quite nervous in the beginningtaking in the venue and other big names accompanying him - he had only needed a few shots to become comfortable and find his groove. He found the situation quite intimidating at first, considering that President Ramaphosa was playing with him, but soon realised that this was only “another day at the office” for him and settled into his game.

Jimmy said he saw himself in a new light after the game, setting new expectations and higher standards for himself.

The other two big names teeing off with Jimmy and the President were Bantu Holomisa (member of the National Assembly of South Africa) and Charles Molapisi (CEO of MTN South Africa). The most memorable moment for Jimmy was, however, shaking President Rama-

phosa’s hand and enjoying a normal conversation with him about the day ahead of them. As for the President’s golfing skills, Jimmy (playing from a seven handicap) said that President Ramaphosa played an average came of golf, but that his game would improve considerably if he spent more time on the golf course.

Jimmy was born, raised and still resides in Louis Trichardt and matriculated from Louis Trichardt High School in 2022. After taking an interest in the game of golf in Grade 4, he has grown to love the sport. Although he still lives in his home town, he is not wasting time as he spends most of it on the golf course at the Soutpansberg Golf Club, where he is a member, bettering his skills. Jimmy said that one would most probably find him there, because he was preparing for his next tournament and that he needed to be at his best when gameday came. As for the Presidential Challenge, Jimmy finished fifth in the A Division on Stableford points.

Fury over song that praises Western Vhukovhela Security

The chairperson of the Madombidzha

Crime Combat Committee, Mr Patrick Sikhutshi, raised the issue with the BCCSA, saying that it had infuriated the local community.

The song, Western Vhukovhela ndihayani, was played on Wednesday, 8 February, during the station’s afternoon drive show, VenRap Five. In the lyrics the artists, who call themselves Vhathenga, describe Western Vhukovhela as fighters against crime. The lyrics warn

Admission bribe scandal rocks University of Venda

As the academic year has started at the different higher education institutions, many students are still left in a state of confusion and uncertainty. Those who did not apply in time have no idea what to do, while even the ones who had followed the correct protocols are still waiting in anticipation, not knowing whether they will be accepted or not.

In the midst of all this turmoil, greedy officials seem to have found a way of making a quick buck out of the poor students. One of the institutions to be hit by such a scandal is the University of Venda (Univen), where an official is alleged to have tried to solicit a bribe from a prospective student who had applied for admission to the university.

The incident came to light last week when the student, who had applied online, received a message saying that her admission blues could be over if she paid an amount of R3 500. Unfortunately for the official, the student (who goes by the name of “Mimz” on Twitter) did not pay the money but shared the

conversation on Twitter instead.

This scandal has raised many an eyebrow, with some desperately trying to guess what the extent of this rot is that seems to have crept into the education system. But according to a staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, this scandal is only the tip of the iceberg.

“Everything is possible at this institution if you have money. Besides this admission scam, academics also get entangled in corruption, where research can be approved in exchange for cash. We hope this is just the beginning and that the relevant parties will be exposed for all the other irregularities going on at Univen,” the staff member said.

Another concerned employee at the university said the fact that qualifying and deserving students were being overlooked and those who could afford to pay bribes got to take their place was painful.

Univen spokesperson Dr Takalani Dzaga confirmed and condemned the incident, saying such behaviour was unethical and brought the university’s reputation into disrepute. He said the university had since suspended the official in question.

address violence and abuse in schools”

While the South African nation is busy battling scourges of poverty, unemployment, corruption, political wars and many other ills and frustrations, another serious matter has been raising its ugly head and is suddenly being shoved into the spotlight. Since the beginning of this school year alone, a series of cases involving gangsterism, bullying and abuse at schools have been reported from all over the country, showing a disturbingly rapid escalation of this problem, and the Vhembe region is not excluded.

Limpopo Mirror has already covered several incidents at local schools in the area this year where learners displayed extremely violent behaviour towards fellow pupils.

In January, a learner at Masiza High School was assaulted with a sjambok by members of a gang (all learners at the school). In an incident prior to this, a learner at the same school was stabbed in the hand by a fellow pupil. At the start of February, a Grade 10 learner at Muthuhadini Combined School chased the principal around the school premises with an axe after his teacher reported him for disruptive behaviour during classes. In another incident prior to this, a learner at the same school stabbed a pupil from another school to death.

In a media statement release on 3 February this year, the Gen-

der-Based Violence Response Fund (The Fund) raised their concerns over the number of reported cases of violence and child abuse since the first term of school kicked off. The Fund was launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2021 as a funding vehicle to tackle the scourge of gender-based violence in South Africa.

According to Mr Tshepo Sefotlhelo, executive head: marketing and communications at The Fund, abuse takes on many forms. He said that reports of bullying, corporal punishment, assault, grooming, and physical abuse in schools were received regularly. Crime statistics generated by the South African Police Service (SAPS) show that 74% of students have reported being hit at school, while 41% have been bullied. Overall, 32% of learners report that they feel unsafe at school.

“The emotional, psychological, and physical consequences of abuse (in whichever form) affect learners’ academic performance, as well as their sense of self. We need to act urgently to address the scourge of violence against our children. It is essential to create a school environment that is more responsive to addressing abuse and violence. Educators need to take the initiative and create an environment where learners can report abuse, knowing that perpetrators will be held accountable. Stopping violence and abuse will require a 365-day effort,” said Sefotlhelo.

Mudzanani, he had spoken to the couple on the morning of the incident while his daughter was busy washing blankets, and everything seemed to be alright between them. “But shortly after 10:00, I was told that there was trouble in their room. I was shocked when I heard that he was beating her. I ran to their room with one of my sons, who kicked the locked door open. My daughter’s lifeless body lay sprawled on top of the bed, covered in blood. There was a big rock and a brick stained with blood next to her head. She also had stab wounds to her body. We later found the bloodstained kitchen knife hidden in the wardrobe. My daughter was killed like a wild animal,” said the bereaved father.

After killing Lindelani,

Munwana allegedly drove off for about two kilometres, parked his car next to the road and hanged himself in a nearby bushy area.

Mourners from all over the Vhembe District attended Lindelani’s funeral service at Tshikambe on Sunday morning (12 February). The deceased’s younger sister, Fhumulani Mudzanani, said the death of her sister had left a big gap in her life. “It has been very difficult for me to concentrate on anything since she passed on. I can’t even eat. May her soul rest in peace,” she said.

Munwana was buried at the same time at his home village of Tshivhilwi, which is just a stone’s throw away from Tshikambe village.

Three learners from the Vhembe region received full bursaries to study at different universities across the country. They were among 165 beneficiaries from across South Africa to receive these bursaries from the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Patricia De Lille, on 26 January. Mathipa Makgato High, Ratanang Special School, Alldays

Secondary (all three under the Blouberg Municipality) and Musina

High each received solar plants, while Rixile Primary, in the Musina area, received a borehole.

Chery’s flagship new Tiggo 8 Pro Max boasts with some impressive features

Motoring News

New to the Chery showroom floor is the brand new Tiggo 8 Pro Max 390T, and if you are looking for luxury at an affordable price, then the Pro Max is definitely worth a second look and test drive.

The Pro Max 390T was launched in December as Chery’s flagship Tiggo 8 model. The newspaper took it for a test drive last Friday and was quite impressed by it, both regarding engine performance and interior and exterior design. One thing is for sure – Chery has come a long way since launching its first entry-level models on the South African market.

The Pro Max was launched to compete against other luxury models such as the Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV, and it does not disappoint. The powerful two-litre engine is equipped with a seven-speed DCT automatic transmission with electric-assisted power steering and delivers an impressive 187kW of power at 5 500rpm and 390Nm of torque at between 2 000 and 4 000rpm. It has a gutsy engine with fast acceleration, almost no turbo lag and smooth gearbox transmission for both speed and towing (the Pro Max

has a 1 500kg towing capacity). Fuel consumption is 7,4 litres per 100km on a combined cycle (claimed).

As mentioned, Chery have stepped up their game on both the body work and interior and exterior design with sturdy body panels and luxury, stitched-leather upholstery. The cabin is spacious, with lots of backseat leg and head space, even for a six-foot-plus backseat passenger.

One of the cool selling points of the Pro Max is that everything is voice activated, from opening the sunroof, tuning to your favourite radio station or opening or closing a window. Keyless entry with remote and push-button start are more luxury features, allowing you to start your car from the comfort of your house and the Pro Max adjusting to your driving preferences, including climate control that comes standard.

Like other competitors in its class, the Pro Max also features three driving modes, including Eco, standard and sport mode – all controlled from your steering wheel or 12.3 inch digital instrument panel, as well as an 8-inch touch-screen ventilation control. It also has two wireless charging platforms for two cellphones and a top-of-the range

8-speaker Sony sound system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

The Tiggo 8 Pro Max also features in impressive array of safety features, boasting a Euro NCAP safety rating of 5. The vehicle comes standard with six omnidirectional airbags to protect the occupants from frontal, roll-over and side-impact, with other safety features, including ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist, automatic emergency breaking, electronic stability control, traction control, 3D cameras all round and much, much more.

The Pro Max definitely features all the bells and whistles of more expensive brands of well over R1 million. Yet the Pro Max starts off at a very reasonable R599 000 to R639 000 for the top-of-the range model with sunroof. It comes with a 1 million kilometre or 10-year engine warranty, a five-year or 150 000km warranty, seven-year or 90 000km service plan and five year unlimited roadside assistance. All services are done inhouse at BB Chery Louis Trichardt.

Heavy rain causes extensive damage to roads

Several damaged bridges and many roads in Vhembe’s rural areas have had to be closed since Friday, 10 February, because of the heavy rain that fell over the area.

Residents who live in slippery mountain areas had to park their vehicles near the main tar roads because they were unable to reach their homes by car.

The affected areas include Makwarani, Maraxwe, Vhutalu, Tshipako, Tshiwani, Tshidzivhe, Tshilungwi, Mudzidzi, Tshakhuma and others.

Motorists who use the main road from the mentioned areas had to drive with great caution as parts of the roads were badly damaged by the rains. Trees were uprooted in some of the hilly areas along the roads. Learners from Tswinga and Muledane were forced to cross the still-flooding Dzindi River on foot. Many parents accompanied their children to help them cross the river, out of fear that they might be swept away by the current. “The water was above our knees, and we just clung to each other’s hands,” said one of the learners, Takalani Mushiana.

The spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai,

said that all four municipalities under Vhembe had been greatly affected by the rains so far. Some areas have no water as pipes were washed away. He said that the affected communities were now forced to use alternative roads to get to work or school and run daily errands.

“Most of the bridges have structural problems, while others are under water. We have sent out a disaster team, and we are visiting the different areas affected by the floods. We are pleading with parents to warn their children not to swim in the dams or play near the rivers, because there are a lot of crocodiles,” said Ralushai.

He warned residents who live close to rivers and streams to evacuate to a safer place or higher spot when the water level rises. “When you cross a flowing river where water reaches above your ankles, turn back and use an alternative route. Never try to walk, swim or drive in swift-flowing water as it can sweep you off your feet. Do not drive over a low-water bridge if the water is flowing strongly across it,” he cautioned.

this as an opportunity to contribute to needy schools. “Access to water is a basic human right. We felt it was important to empower the learners with a reliable source of renewable energy to improve their daily lives and allow them to sustainably operate their agricultural businesses into the future.”

High electricity bills, coupled with load shedding, have prompted PDT to rope in solar energy to ease the strain on the local schools, and with the scourge of drought that continues to ravage the province, where many parts are still without a drop of water, the schools have not been spared.

Jolene Shaw, general manager of Knowledge Pele, said that the aim of the solar installations was to reduce the Eskom electricity cost at the boreholes to pump water.

“The PDT Legacy Project not only addresses the energy, water, sanitation and IT infrastructure needs of schools but, importantly, seeks to create local skills for the long-term maintenance of this infrastructure,” she said.

Shaw further said that PDT saw

The principal of Rixile Primary, Mr Moses Chauke, said they were extremely excited about the donation. “It was a chaotic state here, with many learners losing their precious learning time waiting for water. This is a great relief to us as a school, and we wholeheartedly thank our sponsor for this generous donation. Water is life, and without water we cannot progress. This donation will go a long way in improving the lives of learners and educators at the school,” he said.

The circuit manager of Soutpansberg North, Dr Ntavhanyeni Phaswana, said they believed that the development of the nation went hand in hand with the availability of proper facilities. “We have serious challenges in the country. The solar technology comes in handy, because we don’t have to connect to the grid. We cannot be left behind because we are in rural schools. Only the people who are in the cities are moving ahead with the fourth industrial revolution. The ultimate goal is to make these schools to become smart as well, like we have smart cities,” he said.

Local reggae star Majasi releases new album

Reggae artist Khuthadzo Tshirundu, better known as Majasi, has just released his fourth album, called Vhutshilo ndi nndwa (meaning: life is a war or struggle).

Majasi (28) was born and raised in the rural village of Mbaleni, near Sibasa, and said he was inspired by well-known reggae artist Khakhathi “Murida” Tshisikule, who taught him how to play the guitar and sing reggae songs.

He released his first album, Ndo bebwa henefha Africa, in 2008. He discovered early on how tough the

music industry can be. “One has to pay money to get an album recorded and afterwards find them being sold on the streets by unscrupulous dealers (called amatenten) for as cheap as R10,” he said. His new album comprises 10 soulful tracks, including the title track, Vhutshilo ndi nndwa, Tshilani na vhathu and Nyimelo. He said the album was focused on encouraging others to work hard and do things for themselves, and never to depend on begging. “I cheer people on to live together in harmony; to develop friendships rather than to fight and quarrel with one another, and to forget about the

bitterness of the past and just keep on fighting for a better life.”

Majasi said that, after he had approached many people, Mr Phathutshedzo Tshabuse from Gokolo village finally offered to help him with funds to get his latest album recorded as the artist is currently unemployed and depends on piece jobs to earn a living. Vhutsilo ndi nndwa was recorded at the Ropa Bass Studio in Itsani village, outside Thohoyandou. All the songs on the album were composed by Majasi himself.

For booking and album sales, Majasi can be contacted on 071 573 5541 or 079 049 9014.

Bliss publishes first part of book series

Khathutshelo Mercy Tshivhase from Fondwe village, popularly known as Bliss, published the first part of her book series, called The Untold stories of SHE, at the end of January this year.

Bliss (29), an engineering graduate, is the founder and director of Blissful Smiles Foundation, a non-profit organisation. She is also a certified life coach and a philanthropist at heart.

The untold Stories of SHE is based on the real-life experiences of the victims of gender-based violence (GBV). The book was written with the aim of lending these victims a voice and teaching others to speak out about abuse.

Khathutshelo Mercy Tshivhase, famously known as Bliss, recently published the first part of her book series, The Untold stories of SHE.

Bliss, a victim of GBV herself, said that the violence she had endured had left her suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, bipolar mood disorder, and

chronic depression.

“There is a part of me that I can never get back, but I do have a lot that I want to give back. I am not my trauma. As a victim of GBV myself, I know how hard it is to go mute, being told to keep quiet when you know the only way to heal is to speak up. I wrote this book, not as a victim, but as a teacher. I want these stories to be lessons to everyone - men and women - who are still afraid to speak out, as well as make society aware of the impact GBV has on families and communities,” she said.

Bliss uses her experiences to inspire and provide hope through her foundation, which focuses on mental-health awareness and support, mentoring, coaching, career guidance, donations, and charity work. In 2022, she was nominated for the Young Woman in Community Leadership award at the South African Heroines Awards.

“I aim for the stars and, against all odds, I still endure. I will take as many as I can with me on my way to victory,” she said.

It is true, I was naked says Slenderboy

Entertainment

Well-known local musician Zwivhuya Makondelele, famously known as Mosque Slenderboy, apparently likes to show off his tush to his fans. Last year, he caused quite a stir when he ended up naked on stage at a drinking hole at Tswinga. Now another video of him dancing naked on stage, this time while he performed at the Siawoadza Tavern in Tshiulungoma village on Saturday, 4 February, went viral. But the artist from Fondwe village does not feel ashamed in the least.

Makondelele’s music is a mixture of rhumba, kwasa kwasa, house, manyalo and gospel, and he is highly regarded for his impressive acrobatic dancing skills during performances.

He told Limpopo Mirror that, as an adult, he was fully aware of what he was doing on stage and he did not have to get approval from anyone. He even admitted that he had instructed his driver to take the video. “There must have been more than 1000 fun lovers who came to see me perform that evening. The venue was packed to full capacity, and the mood was vibrant. I had my outfit on when I started my

Young Rasekutuma aims for the Miss South Africa title

Fifteen-year-old Avron Nhluleko Rasekutuma from Hamavhunda village, outside Thohoyandou, is dead set on wearing the Miss South Africa crown one day. This ambitious young lady, who is currently in Grade 10 at

Mphaphuli Secondary School, first fell in love with modelling when she was just five years old. Her mother, Ms Leonah Sungulo Hulisani Nkuna, who has become her daughter’s number one fan over the years, relived Avron’s modelling journey up until now when she spoke to this newspaper.

performance, and the fans went crazy with every dance move I made.”

However, he said the whole show made a U-turn when he performed his famous song, Vhusweule, which includes lyrics such as “musi ro kangwa ri a bvula marukhu” (when we are drunk, we take off our trousers). “I started taking off my shirt, but the crowd was not satisfied, so I took off my trousers too and was left with only my underwear on. But still the crowd continued yelling for me to go further. Realising that my fans were not going to give up, I found myself taking off my underwear as well and everyone was cheering and clapping while I did my dance moves.”

He said that, although he had taken everything off, he had made sure that his private parts were not exposed to the audience.

“I covered my private parts with my hand while I continued to dance. I am not sorry for what I did, because the most important thing for me is to make my fans happy when I perform,” he said.

“In 2013 (when Avron was in Grade R), a friend of mine, Nsuku Mabunda, invited me to come watch as she partook in a beauty contest at Hluvuka High School in Nkuzana, so I took Avron with me. My daughter was never the same after that. From that day on, she insisted on being called Nsuku, after her role model, and it was clear that she wanted to do modelling, just like Nsuku. She asked me to buy her high heels and she would model for us at home. She started doing modelling in 2014, when she was at Mtsetweni Primary School, and has not looked back since. With such zeal and determination, she is destined for greater things in this industry,” said Nkuna.

Her road to stardom looks bright indeed. Last year, Avron won two of the beauty pageants she entered. The Miss Cultural Princess 2022/23 pageant was held at Tourist Park Tshilungoma on 10 December, and the Miss Teen Duthuni 2022/23 at Siphugu Car Wash in Duthuni on 11 December.

Avron is oozing confidence, determined to break into the world of beauty. “My dream is to see myself on stage competing for the Miss SA title. I will do this to make my mother proud, as she is my pillar of strength, the one who accompanies me to all the competitions I enter. I will not be doing [her] justice if I do not thank the former Miss Hlanganani 2010 and Miss Hluvuka High 2013 winner, Ms Nsuku Mabunda, who has become my mentor,” she said.

Phalaphala FM goes on a drive to interact with listeners

On Friday, 10 February, Phalaphala FM continued to celebrate their 58th birthday with the elderly at their Thohoyandou studio, while well-known musician Colbert Mukwevho entertained their guests.

Ms Sharon Ravele, the station’s programme manager, said she felt humbled and grateful that their elderly listeners had shown up in their numbers to support them. “This drive was an eye opener, that we need to get out more and interact with our listeners. This way we are able to connect with them and understand their concerns and issues. This will position us to actually talk about real issues that our people are conversing about daily.”

“Sport has always been a part of my life. I started as a sports analyst for Makhado FM in 2011 and was given the chance as a sports presenter in 2022,” he said.

The Sports Exclusive show, which airs Mondays to Fridays from 18:00 to 19:00, caters for all sporting codes, from soccer, netball, hockey, and rugby, to cricket and boxing, which all receive a lot of coverage to satisfy the interest of the station’s listeners. This, he said, also gave him an opportunity to interact with the bigshots in different sporting circles globally. The aim of the show is to develop, educate and entertain the listeners.

“What I like about the show is that it is friendly, and we get to interact with the listeners. As a sports presenter,

Two lovely lady poets from the region, Hlayisani Shiburi and Sheila Mathevula, recently published an anthology of verse, called Vusiwana I Baji (poverty is a jacket). The theme around this collection of 30 inspirational poems, written in Xitsonga, is meant to remind people that nothing bad that happens in life is ever permanent, no matter what background you come from.

Hlayisani (32) is affectionately known as N’wa Jika The Poet Phyembye Ra Africa and hails from Madobi village. She said that she and Sheila happened to share a common ancestry. Sheila (34) is also known as Sheila De Poetic Queen and is from Bungeni village. Both these multi-talented women use their writing and recitation skills to supplement their income.

“Neither one of us was raised by our parents on a steady income. The title of the anthology is a source of motivation, not only for us, but for the nation as well; that we should not be afraid to try and fail, as long as we get up and try again,” said Hlayisani.

Hlayisani has written more than 80 uplifting poems. She drew her inspiration from acclaimed multi-award-winning praise singer Masingita Shivambu, known by her stage name of Ntombhi Ya Mutsonga. She has earned herself a number of accolades thus far, including

This year proved that our stakeholder management is working for the stations,” she said.

Phalaphala FM further plans to visit other areas around the Vhembe district and Gauteng as part of their 58th milestone. “Our aim is to engage with our listeners, show how much we appreciate their support and, in the process, build a much-needed emotional bond between our audience and the station. It may not have been instantly obvious, but the listeners were demonstrating their readiness to embrace what the station has ably and willingly embarked on - a drive to bring our listeners together,” Ravele said.

She also referred to the ease with which each presenter had interacted with the listeners and described it as a demonstration of social cohesion, which these giants of the airwaves espouse to drive. “As Phalaphala FM, we are eternally grateful for the spirit of synergy displayed during this event and the assistance we have been getting over the years during our outside broadcasts in different areas.”

She was also nominated for the Best Poetry category at the LIMA awards in 2022 and will represent South Africa in a Ghana-based virtual poetry session, called Global Poetgasm Fiesta, which will be held every first week of the month.

Hlayisani is not only a praise poet, author, voice-over artist, actor, entrepreneur and qualified electrician, but she has also established her own clothing brand, called Switirhela Ku Lulama Clothing.

Sheila has a decade of writing experience under her belt. For some time, she lived with her late grandmother, Nwa Magezi Mhlakazi, who instilled in her a love of storytelling from a young age. She has more than 130 poems to her name. She serves as a master of ceremonies, professional nanny, and a preacher, and has founded Swa Sheila Events and Management and the Xalamuka Youth Club.

Sheila said that they had actually completed Vusiwana I Baji in August last year, but because of financial challenges, it could only be printed in December.

“It was a wonderful experience working together again,” she said of her and Hlayisani’s collaboration.

Good Mabama and surrounding villages want clean water from VDM

The shortage of water in many communities around the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) has prompted villagers of Ha-Makhuvha Extension (called Good Mabama), Tshidimbini, Tshitereke and Damani to meet with the executive mayor of the VDM, Dowelani Nenguda, the municipality’s engineers and representatives of some of the community structures to discuss this pressing issue.

The meeting was held at the Tshifhatani Primary School in Tshidimbini village, outside Thohoyandou, on Thursday, 9 February.

A community leader of Good Mabama, Mr Derrick Rampamba, said that the water shortages in some of the communities had reached a point where residents must draw water from nearby rivers where animals also drink, and they were tired of the district’s empty promises to come up with a solution.

“We want water for Good Mabama and the surrounding communities, and nothing else. It seems the VDM is not taking our water shortages seriously and that is why we decided to meet

with them,” said Rampamba.

The village of Good Mabama is an extension of the rural Makhuvha village, near Vhufuli. This extension was created in 2017 and the villagers were promised clean water from taps, which never materialised.

According to Rampamba, what they sought from the meeting was for the VDM to at least implement short-term interventions, such as tankers and boreholes, while they (VDM) worked on a long-term solution.

VDM’s general manager of technical services, Mr Wiseman Maluleke, said they were working around the clock to ensure that the village of Good Mabama and the other affected communities received clean running water. He was, however, worried about the vandalism of water pipes and cable theft, which, he said, was a constant challenge the district faced in their efforts to deliver clean water to affected communities.

He warned those guilty of this crime to stop doing so immediately.

Shoes for Vhembe’s young learners

Ridgeway College in Louis Trichardt held their Grade 8 induction ceremony to welcome the Grade 8 students officially into the Ridgeway College family on 7 February. During this ceremony, Grade 12 students pin a Ridgeway logo on the Grade 8 students, officially making them members of the Ridgeway community. Also as part of the induction, students sign in as Grade 8 students and light a candle to symbolise their entry into high school. In 2028, they will sign out as Grade 12 students and put out the candle’s flame to mark the conclusion of their career as Ridgeway College students, thus completing their journey. The induction ceremony was followed by a welcome braai on 10 February, hosted by the Grade 12 mentors. This function gives the Grade 8 students an opportunity to interact outside an academic sphere and officially concludes the Grade 8 orientation. “Although there were cries of joys as Grade 8 pupils could get rid of their ‘egg babies’ that they were parenting, we know our Grade 12 learners will miss insisting on being serenaded at a moment’s notice,” said Miss Micaela Shaw, the Grade 8 grade head. Young entrepreneur uses his Covid grants to create an entertainment park at Tshipako

Many youths in the country find themselves between a rock and a hard place after they matriculate as very few jobs are available and even fewer have financial muscle for them to further their studies. No matter how hard the government-initiated campaigns try to teach the public, especially the youth, that crime does not pay, hunger and starvation continue to force many into joining underworld gangs. They end up committing crimes to sustain themselves, often leading to lengthy prison sentences.

Dzulani Trevor Sidogi, a young man from Tshipako village, right in the “bundu” of the Vhembe District, did not have money to continue with his studies when he completed his Grade 12, but he was not going to let this get the better of him. He could have given up, but instead he came up with a long-term plan that might one day generate an income for him. He was going to create an attraction park in his village.

“When I applied for the R350 Covid grant in 2019, I had to wait several months before it was approved and I started receiving the money. I received R1 400 payment in cash and used the money to buy stock to start a spaza shop, selling sweets, Simbas (chips) and chappies from my home,”

he said. With the profit he made from the spaza shop, he decided to start the attraction park, but he still did not have all the materials he would need to begin this project. “I started buying cement and cut some trees to get logs from which I could create animal-like structures. I made an elephant and a giraffe from cement and other interesting objects from wire and whatever I could find, and planted different types of flowers to make the whole place look beautiful,” said Sidogi.

Despite the fact that he is located in a rural area, where attracting tourists is difficult, people eventually started to visit the park. Now they come frequent-

ly. He does not, however, charge people yet to visit the park. “I rely on Good Samaritans for donations sometimes. But once I have enlarged it, I will have to charge adults for visits to the park. Kids under 12 years can come for free. I have a dream that this will be a very big park one day and it might also provide job opportunities for other youths in the village,” he said.

Sidogi still hopes to further his studies at a tertiary institution someday. “I would like to be a land surveyor or an agricultural economist, but for now, there is nothing I can do about it as I don’t have funds to go back to school,” he concluded.

Former Mbilwi classmates bid Prof Marwala farewell

Prof Tshilidzi Marwala, former vice-chancellor and principal of the University of Johannesburg, will be

assuming his responsibilities as rector of the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo, Japan, with effect from 1 March this year. This is indeed a great honour as

Marwala will be the first African to be appointed in this prestigious position.

Khathu Mamaila, former City Press editor and one of Marwala’s classmates at Mbilwi Secondary School back in the day, described the professor as a very dedicated learner. Mamaila, who was head boy of the matric class of 1989, was speaking during a farewell function that was held for Marwala by his former classmates in Mbilwi’s school hall on Friday, 3 February.

Dr Tshenuwani Farisani (right) conducted a special prayer for Prof Tshilidzi Marwala, who was appointed as the rector of the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo, Japan, where he will assume his position on 1 March this year. A special farewell function was held for him at Mbilwi Secondary School on Friday, 3 February.

“I was at the farewell function for him at the University of Johannesburg two weeks ago. One of the guests seated next to me asked me: ‘how do you know Professor Tshilidzi Marwala?’. I replied that we were classmates in school and the man looked at me like he had just

seen a ghost, in total disbelief. ‘How was he as a student?’ he asked me. ‘Was he the smartest in your class?’ And I said ‘No, he was not the smartest in our class, but he was by far the most hardworking student in our class’,” Mamaila said.

Mamaila said Marwala was such a huge achiever that he had the status of “academic superman”.

“We must appreciate his

achievements. He is just a boy from the rural village of Duthuni who, like many of us, went to school at Mbilwi Secondary School.” He advised Mbilwi’s matric class of 2023 to work hard and be disciplined and nothing else, and to regard education as the most potent weapon to break the circle of poverty.

Professor Marwala thanked Mamaila and everyone present

SANCO and chief at loggerheads over “vigilante” group

Makonde village came to a standstill on Sunday afternoon, 12 February, when angry villagers blocked roads with big rocks, bricks and other items to bar people from getting into or out of the village. Residents accuse their acting traditional leader, Vho-Nyadzeni Peter Ravhura, of terrorising the villagers with a vigilante group, known as Tshiswole tsha Makonde.

The national road between Thohoyandou and Tshilamba was also blocked, where trucks carrying perishable foods were delayed for more than four hours. The police had to intervene when villagers threatened to confront the vigilante group, accused of making their lives a living hell for more than three years, physically.

They said the group members were using a big container that was used by the municipality to store goods when the new stadium was being built. The municipality ap-

parently left it at the stadium when they were done, and this group had taken it, put it up next to the post office and used it as their office.

The chairperson of the South African National Civics Organisation (SANCO) at Makonde village, Mr Boshoto Ravhura, who is also a member of the Makonde royal house, said that the strike was eventually called off after talks with the police to prevent bloodshed. Both parties (SANCO and the police) agreed that they would meet again on Monday (13 February).

Ravhura said the residents were fed-up with the traditional leader for intervening and stopping police investigations. “The police are not doing anything to investigate murder cases in the village. The vigilante group went to Raluvhimba Secondary School and beat kids up and molested girls in broad daylight. The principal opened a case, but the police have not arrested anyone to date,” he said.

Shortly after the meeting between the police and SANCO at

The Musina Municipality has issued an apology, following a three-day power blackout in some parts of the town after three electricity poles, a transformer and the whole line were swept away by heavy storms last week. The power was finally restored on Saturday night (11 February). In the photo, a municipal worker is seen working to restore the damaged line.

the local police headquarters in Sibasa on Monday, the two parties briefed the media on what had happened. “The acting traditional leader, Vho-Ravhura, was ordered to disband his vigilante group with immediate effect. Failure to do so will lead to their being arrested. As SANCO Makonde and the organisers of the strike, we were also ordered to clear all the debris and rocks from the road,” Ravhura said. When asked whether the meeting had restored their trust in their local police, he said that it had not.

“I still believe that the local police are captured by this vigilante group. We want to see criminals being arrested first before we can trust them. At the moment, they are still on a WhatsApp group with the criminals.”

Meanwhile, the acting traditional leader of Makonde, Vho Nyadzeni Peter Ravhura, denied all the allegations levelled against him by members of SANCO and their followers. He said the people who were called a vigilante group were members of his own personal security.

He said SANCO Makonde had called a community meeting without his permission as the traditional leader in the village, and he had not

attended the meeting. He agreed that he had met SANCO at Sibasa Police Station to iron out the problems at Makonde, where SANCO had complained about the government container, his security guards and the traditional leadership. “I told them that those guys are there to protect me. They are not a vigilante group. They were also helping to solve minor problems in the community. If they were beating up people, that was not brought to my attention. But from Monday, the group will never help in protecting the community. We agreed that they will only do the job I hired them to do, which is to protect me at all times,” he said.

On the question of the container, he said he had asked permission to use it from the Thulamela Municipality, which was given to him. “We also agreed the container would be returned to the stadium,” he said.

He added that he would like to warn the community of Makonde not to be dragged into traditional-leadership battles. “The leadership issues of Makonde are being handled by Thovhele Kennedy Midiyavhathu Prince Tshivhase, who is the leader of the Tshivhase Dynasty,” he said.

for their kind farewell words. “My journey seemingly began small but, as anyone connected to Mbilwi Secondary School will tell you, great things often emerge from this space. Mbilwi is my butterfly,” he said fondly. To date, Marwala has written 27 books - one in Chinese – of which many were inspired by the lessons he had learnt as a student at Mbilwi.

Eric Muneri appointed as the new general manager of Lidoda duvha

Mr Eric Muneri is the new general manager of Black Leopards Football Club. He took over from Mr Elijah Mulaudzi, who held the position for almost a decade. Mr Mulaudzi was relieved of the position last week.

According to the chairman of the club, Mr David Thidiela, the decision to replace Mulaudzi with Muneri had been influenced by the fact that they had wanted to strengthen the team in all departments.

Muneri is by no means a new name in South African football. He is one of the founder members of the defunct Dynamos Football Club. When Dynamos sold their National First Division franchise to Giyani-based businessman Mr Pat Malabela, Muneri migrated to the then Vodacom Promotional League side, Vhembe FC, where he

held the position of chairman.

When Vhembe FC sold the club’s franchise to a Sekhukhune-based business consortium, Muneri refused to vanish from football circles. He joined the Safa Vhembe Regional League, where he served as general secretary for the association for three terms before he kissed the association goodbye in June last year.

Muneri has thanked his current employer, Mr David Thidiela, for believing him.

He said that he would use the

Following the team’s relocation to Bloemfontein last week, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) will play their first home match at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein this weekend. They will host the pace setters, Casric Stars, on Saturday afternoon.

According to the president of the club, Mr Masala Mulaudzi, the relocation of the team means that a huge chunk of their budget will now be used towards the day-to-day administration of the team.

Mulaudzi said that the club had reached an agreement with the local municipality regarding the utilization of the Dr Molemela Stadium. In terms of the agreement, the club will pay R50 000 to the municipality towards the utilization of the stadium for all seven remaining home matches. Mulaudzi said that R50 000 was close to the amount they had been asked to pay the Thulamela Local Municipality for renting the Thohoyandou Stadium for each of their home matches.

TTM’s vastly experienced defender, Issa Sarr, is the only player who did not relocate to Bloemfontein with the team. According to Mulaudzi, Sarr had cited family problems as a reason for not relocating to the Free State in the middle of the season.

Asked about the rumour that they were planning to dump their head coach, Mulaudzi was quick to confirm that Mr Johnny Ferreira was still the head coach of TTM. He explained that most of the people who were part of the management team had not relocated with the team to Bloemfontein. Mr Azwihangwisi Phasha (team manager) and Ms Wisani Nemaremelane (first aider) are the only two people who had relocated with the team.

Mulaudzi said that TTM had played a number of friendly games at their new home ground the past

experience he had gained over the past decades to ensure that Black Leopards restored its lost pride.

Giyani Happy Boys crush Vondwe XI Bullets

Giyani Happy Boys are still in a joyous mood after they had brutally walloped Vondwe XI Bullets 5-2 in their ABC Motsepe League match played at the Tshifudi Stadium on Sunday.

The game was played to the finish even though heavy rain poured down and soaked the pitch towards the end of the first half.

Happy Boys’ killer striker, Sello “Ferrari” Molewa, scored a hat trick and was a marvel to watch in the game. His first goal came 18 minutes into the game when he headed home after a free kick that was taken by Mluleki Ngubane.

The visitors from Giyani were 2-0 up when the referee, Mr Peter Baloyi, blew the half-time whistle. The goal came after a defender of Bullets, Sinavha Mulaudzi, handled the ball within his own penalty box. Molewa took the penalty shot and beat the keeper with a ground cutter.

The home side was unstoppable during the first 15 minutes of the last stanza, but their fighting spirit vanished with time. They managed to pull one back six minutes into the last half. Phathutshedzo Nemagovhani, who came on as a substitute, gave the ball the final touch after a scramble within the box.

What followed thereafter was a oneway flow of traffic, with Bullets chasing

Leopards and Polokwane City in Limpopo derby

After a break of two weeks, the teams affiliated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship League will be in action again this weekend. All eyes will be on the Limpopo derby between Black Leopards and Polokwane City, which will be played at the Malamulele Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Apart from the fact that sparks always fly wherever the two teams meet, Sunday’s game is expected to be a typical thriller from the onset the end for several reasons.

A win for City will keep the team in the race for the league title. Rise and Shine, as they are affectionately called, are currently lying in the second position with 34 points, two behind the pace setters, Casric Stars.

at the beginning of the season. The newly appointed head coach of Leopards, Mr Owen da Gama, will be giving the players instructions from the team’s technical bench for the first time on Sunday. The former Bafana Bafana head coach had taken over from Zimbabwean mentor Mr Rodwell Dhlakama, who parted ways with Leopards last Tuesday.

Black Leopards will travel to Pretoria next Wednesday (22nd). Their midweek match against JDR Stars will be played at the Soshanguve Giant Stadium outside Pretoria.

the action. Happy Boys increased the tally in the 65th minute. Their right winger, Kwanele Hlongwane, tried his luck with a half volley from the 25-metre area. The keeper of Bullets, Vhugala Makhuvha, palmed the ball into the net in an effort to clear it.

Molewa completed his hat trick soon afterwards when he blasted in a rocket from the edge of the box. As if that was not good enough to embarrass Bullets in front of their home crowd, Kwanele Hlongwane was on target again with a neat header.

The home side reduced the margin later in the game when Lucky Mutshotsho scored with a header after a corner kick taken by Emmanuel Gundula.

As for Lidoda duvha, they must win the match at all costs to restore their lost pride and to enhance their chances of escaping the relegation axe at the end of the season. The Thohoyandou side are perched at the bottom of the log with 13 points. Black Leopards managed to win only two of the 17 matches they have played to date. Leopards were beaten 0-3 by City in their first-round league match played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane

Makhitha Oscar Stars continued to pave their way to the promotional play-offs by beating Mira Blackpool 3-1 in their Safa Vhembe SAB league match played at Madodonga grounds on Sunday. Stars started the game like a house on fire. That forced Blackpool to play the first 20 minutes of the game with their backs against the wall. A corner kick in the 24th minute resulted in a scramble within the box and Stewardson Maputu scored the opening goal with a beautiful shot.

A defender of Stars, Musandiwa Makhuja, made a mistake and passed the ball to his opponent,

Bandile Thangavhuelelo, who scored easily to equalise. The players of Blackpool were not happy with the referee’s many decisions against them. One of them, Dakalo Malugana, was reprimanded with a card for a continued argument with the referee. The half-time score was still 1-1. In the 76th minute, Andries Masingi forced his way through the defence of Blackpool and beat the keeper with a volley to bring the score to 2-1. Blackpool continued to play entertaining football, despite the setback. They were denied what was arguably a legitimate goal in the 78th minute. Musundwa Ngwana’s goal was disallowed on the basis that the scorer was in an offside position.

Rofhiwa Mabila scored the third for Stars from 20 metres away, 10 minutes before full time.

Nkhetheni

Maleboho of Blackpool won a loose ball from the left corner in the 88th minute. He ran a few steps towards the goals before beating the keeper. He caused an upset, however, when his shot hit the woodwork and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.

Can Musina United stop the current log leaders, Giyani Happy Boys?

Musina United have a mammoth task at hand this weekend. They will travel to Giyani on Saturday to honour their ABC Motsepe League match against Giyani United, which will be played at the Xikukwani Stadium.

Musina United and Happy Boys have every reason to want to collect the maximum points at stake. Musina’s future as an affiliate for the ABC Motsepe League is hanging by a thread as they are lying in the second-last position on the log standings with 10 points from 12 matches. They must win at least two of their four remaining fixtures.

On the other hand, anything less than victory will

do Happy Boys more harm than good. The Giyani side are currently leading the pack with 29 points, which they had accumulated from 12 matches.

Happy Boys are two points ahead of the second-placed side, Mpheni Home Defenders.

Home Defenders have two matches in hand. Should they manage to win their outstanding matches, Home Defenders will jump to the top of the log, leaving Happy Boys four points behind.

Happy Boys are sharpened to kill after beating Vondwe

XI Bullets 5-2 at the Tshifudi Stadium last Sunday.

Vondwe XI Bullets visit Winners Park FC at the Giyani Stadium. Winners Park must keep an eye on the Bullets’ goal poachers, Mulamuleli Netshid-

zivhe, Talifhani Manyage and Phathutshedzo Nemagovhani, or else they will concede an avalanche of goals.

After crushing Clarewood JPM FC 3-0 in their Nedbank Cup match at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday, Mpheni Home Defenders will take on Emmanuel FC at the Louis Trichardt High School Grounds.

Mikhado FC will host Munaca FC at the Rabali Stadium in the Nzhelele Valley. Mikhado are rooted at the bottom of the log with nine points. Mighty FC will play against City Motors at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. The other fixtures are Ditlou FC vs PJ Stars, Eleven Fast Tigers vs Phinnet City and Tzaneen United vs Tubatse United FC.

Two tricky hurdles ahead of VFA

After beating the ABC Motsepe League side, Blackcross FC, 2-1 in their Nedbank Cup KO Competition match that was played at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein last Saturday, Venda Football Academy (VFA) have a mountain to climb this weekend. They will play two tough league matches within the space of four days.

Their first assignment is to beat the stubborn Baroka FC, with whom they will lock horns in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League match at the Global Stadium in Lebowakgomo on Saturday afternoon.

VFA’s bulldozer striker, Rhulani Manzini, managed to score a brace in their game against Blackcross FC. Whether Manzini will be able to continue from where he left off remains to be seen.

While the players of VFA seem to be in the right frame of mind after their Nedbank Cup victory, the opposite is the case in the camp of Baroka. Bakgakga, as they

are widely known, are still in mourning from their 0-3 defeat at the hands of Cape Town Spurs in the same competition last Friday afternoon.

VFA are lying in the 13th position on the log standings with 18 points, while Baroka are perched in the 10th spot with 19 points. VFA bolstered their striking force by signing a Nigerian striker, Babatunde Adepoju, on Monday (13th). Should he be given a chance on Saturday, Adepoju is expected to form a good combi-

nation with Rhulani Manzini, Rudzani Thobo and Edmore Chirambadare at the front.

VFA will host MM Platinum FC at the Thohoyandou Stadium next Wednesday (22nd). VFA and Platinum are tied on 18 points each. Platinum are in the 12th position on the log standings by virtue of having scored more goals. VFA had lost only one match this year. Their only defeat was against Magesi FC, who beat them 1-0 at the Thohoyandou Stadium three weeks ago.

The Hollywoodbets Pre-Easter Cup 2023 was launched on Monday. Four teams from local football associations and four regional teams will compete in this competition. All matches will be played at the Mabaleng Sports Grounds on Sunday (19 February). The final match will start at 15:30. The winning team will go home with R8 000, a floating trophy and gold medals. The runners-up will get R4 000 and silver medals. Prizes will also be given to the teams ending in third and fourth place. The event is organised by Mamu Community Development. Ridgeway

Louis Trichardt held their annual Ridgeway Races interhouse athletics meeting on 4 February. The children, their parents and the community came out in numbers to celebrate this special event. Team Water were the victors on the day, with Earth and Fire not too far behind. “As proud residents of our beautiful town, we didn’t let a few drops of rain stop us from forging ahead with the track events. Luckily, the weather held up and we were able to celebrate our athletes achievements whilst sharing a few laughs and some great food that morning,” said principal Mr Melvin Govender.

Mpheni Home Defenders beat Clarewood JPM to enter last 16 round of Nedbank Cup

Mpheni Home Defenders are through to the last-16 round of the Nedbank Cup KO Competition, following their 3-0 victory over Clarewood JPM FC at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday.

The head coach of Home Defenders, Mr Sydwell Phuravhathu, could not stop praising his players for a job well done after the game. He said that he had told his players to play their traditional carpet football and to avoid

aerial balls at all times as that would be advantageous to the visitors. Most of the Clarewood players are tall and physically strong. The ecstatic mentor said that the 3-0 score was a true reflection of the game.

Asked about whom they would like to play in the last-16 round, Mr Phuravhathu said that he was not worried about who their next opponents were. He stressed the fact that they were ready to face any opposition as he believed in the saying: “in order to become a champion, one must first

TTM official fined for threatening to “bewitch” referee

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila

FC (TTM) and a club official have been fined by the Premier Soccer League’s disciplinary committee for causing violence and threatening to bewitch a match official.

The case relates to an incident that took place after TTM’s Motsepe Foundation Championship League game against rivals Venda Football Academy (VFA), which was played at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Friday, 27 January.

Following the incident, the club and an official, namely Mr Lavhelesani Mukomafhedzi, were summoned to appear before the league’s disciplinary committee last Thursday (9th). The committee members heard that Mukomafhedzi, who holds the position

beat the champion”.

He reckoned that if they were pitted against a DStv Premiership side in the next round, that would help them to gauge their level of readiness for promotion.

Phuravhathu said that their aim was to get promotion to the higher division at the end of the season and that winning the Nedbank Cup would be a bonus to them.

The coach of Clarewood, Mr Clayton Du Plessis, admitted that they had lost to the better side. According to him, the home side played better soccer throughout the game.
