Hannetjie is dadelik opgeneem.

“Toe ek by my agterdeur kom, het ek besef Hanna kry regtig nie asem nie. So ‘n halfuur later het hulle my kom roep.

Foto verskaf.

Ek het so voetjievirvoetjie geskyfel as ek oor die weg moes kom. Julle moet my maar verskoon deur asemhaling. N kop is n baie kragtige ding. Hy laat jou net daar voel jy gaan nie vanaand hierdeur kom nie. Jy begin dan so n benoudheid in jou bors ervaar.

so oormekaar dat n 3 sin whapp 5min vat want jy delete aanmekaar. Jou dr het so ruimpie. Jy lyk goed, daar is mense wat slegter as jy lyk. Dan eweskielik oorval so angs besigheid jou.

Dit is vir no 2. Daai droë lug het my neus binne in vol sulke 5cm rowe. Daar is nou watta bo oor my ore sodat ek kan cope. En daar gebeur my nagmerrie 28/06/21. Ek was vandag n ander mens. So ja Prys die Here. Daar was n vroue suster wat my vandag kom sê het covid maak soms so. Glo ek daar is n draaipunt Ek glo in my hele wese ek begin nou beter voel. Ek glo en bid more voel ek beter as vandag. Julle moet saam bid dat dit asb n draaipunt was en nie n more weer plat dag nie. Ek wil nie eers daaraan dink. More voel ek nog beter …

not really fully stocked with honey yet, because it is only the beginning of the flowering season. So, to a great extent, they (the plunderers) are unsuccessful, but in the process, hives are broken, and bee swarms are lost,” said James. The destruction places a lot of pressure on beekeepers. “Not uniquely so, in the sense that the socio-economic conditions impact everybody. I think this season the avo growers saw a far higher incidence of theft than other years. Certainly, in my case, as far as my avos are concerned, I had five robberies going through a substantial security fence. So, beekeepers are

also victim to the larger problem of theft and socio-economic conditions in our country,” said James. “We’ve historically had cases where guys had just driven in, picked up our boxes [beehives] and left us with nothing. So, this is a different type of theft. I suspect that these could be people who need hives for pollination or people who want to start farming with bees and cannot get hold of bees, because bees are in short supply,” concluded James. The farms targeted appear to be mainly those scattered along the R524 road in the Levubu area.

Volgens me.

Please support SPCA’s Jailed & Bailed couples Amidst a dramatic surge in Covid-19 cases, many local charities such as the Louis Trichardt SPCA had to rethink the way they interact with the public, especially regarding raising much-needed funds to keep their doors open. One of their more popular fundraisers is their

annual “Jailed and Bailed” event where willing candidates are “locked up” at the local kennels. Family, friends, and members of the public can then pay “bail” to get them out. This year, the Louis Trichardt SPCA will once again host this popular fundraiser, albeit in a somewhat different format. Instead of individ-

Shortage of ambulances in Musina a huge concern By Bernard Chiguvare A shortage of ambulances in Musina seems to be a matter of great concern, and residents want to know why the Limpopo Department of Health has no back-up plan in place. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo previously highlighted the same problem. After receiving numerous reports and complaints that the emergency medical services (EMS) in Musina currently has no functioning ambulances to serve the people in the town and surrounding villages, a letter was sent to Limpopo Health MEC Ms Phophi Ramathuba to address the matter urgently.

The late Rakgadi Alucia Maphaha, fondly known as Mama Africa, died on Sunday, 4 July, at home in Nancefield, Musina. Photo supplied.

According to Risham Maharaj, the DA Limpopo’s spokesperson for health, this issue came to light after people who had called the emergency services were informed that no ambulances were available and were provided with contact details for a private ambulance service. “This situation just brings into question how many people in need of emergency medical attention have been left unattended. This is even more concerning, considering that the province is in the midst of the Covid-19 third wave,” Maharaj said. The problem caused an outcry from members of the community, following an incident where the EMS were called to take a very sick woman to hospital and the family was simply told that none of the ambulances worked. Rakgadi Alucia Maphaha lived in Nancefield and worked as a cleaner at Musina Municipality for nearly ten years. She became very sick as a result of high blood pressure. On Sunday, 4 July, her brother, Mr Stanley Maphaha, noticed that Rakgadi’s condition was deteriorating very quickly and called the EMS for an ambulance. He claims that the phone rang for five minutes before it was answered. “After realising that my sister’s condition was really bad, I called for an ambulance. When they eventually answered the call, I was told that all the ambulances are broken; they have no ambulance at Musina’s ambulance station. I did not waste further time and called a private ambulance, which arrived promptly, but my sister had already died when they got there,” Stanley said. Community members headed to Musina ambulance station on that same Sunday, and found only one working ambulance for the whole of Musina. The other three were indeed broken down. Rakgadi was fondly known in the community as Mama Africa because she loved everyone. She is survived by her two children and two grandchildren and was buried on Thursday, 8 July. The Limpopo Department of Health had not responded to a media enquiry at the time of our going to press.

Major cigarette bust at Beitbridge By Bernard Chiguvare Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe hailed the police last week for intercepting illegal cigarettes worth more than R3 million at the Beitbridge border post. According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, this bust follows a similar big bust last year when illegal cigarettes worth about R6 million were intercepted at the same

border. In a police statement, Mojapelo said that the police had received a tip-off about a bus with a trailer carrying smuggled illegal cigarettes in the vicinity of Beitbridge. The police spotted the bus and conducted a search. In the trailer, they found 239 boxes of illegal Remington Gold cigarettes and 35 loose cartons. Following the find, the bus driver and bus conductor were arrested, while a third suspect managed to evade arrest. The 32-year-old bus driver,

Mzolo Sithembiso Ephraim, and 37-year-old bus conductor Havemore Sabali appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Both appeared on charges relating to the Customs and Excise Act regarding illegal cigarettes. They were remanded in custody until 19 July for profiling and a bail application. In the meantime, the search for the third suspect continues. Hadebe thanked the public for continuously assisting the police in the fight against crime.

Covid’s third wave deals Vhembe a deadly blow By Kaizer Nengovhela, Bernard Chiguvare & Maanda Bele The third wave of Covid-19 infections has struck the Vhembe region, and this time around it has caused devastation. Apart from the sharp rise in the death toll, many businesses had to close and isolate the past week, or operate with a fraction of their normal staff component. The pandemic is also taking its toll on industries such as funeral businesses, where staff members not only face an increased workload, but are under severe emotional stress. The latest available figures, as supplied by the Limpopo Department of Health, indicate that Vhembe had 1 980 active Covid cases on Monday, 12 July. Most of these are in the Makhado area (918) and in Thulamela (577). In Musina, 276 active cases occurred, and in the Collins Chabane municipal area the figure stood at 214. Many believe that these figures are not realistic and that the real figures are much higher. The death toll has shown a dramatic increase the past two weeks. On 30 June, the Vhembe region reported 497 Covid-related deaths. This figure went to 563 on Monday.

Funeral businesses under pressure The impact of the pandemic can clearly be seen in the funeral industry. The chairperson of the South African Funeral Practitioners Association (SAFPA), Mr Sam Ntshauba, said that ever since the pandemic had hit South Africa, their industry had been under immense pressure. He said that they now worked twice as much as they normally would. Ntshauba said that not just the workload, but also the emotional pressure was unprecedented. He explained that bodies arrive hourly, and shifts are being doubled. Following a death, a funeral must be held within three days. “We can’t keep the bodies for two weeks, because they’d pile up. So, we need them to be going out as quickly as possible,” he explained. “Heavy demands are made, and these are felt by everyone in the business. It’s not only us who are inundated. Sometimes, when we get to a cemetery, there are not enough graves,” he said, adding that additional staff members were then required, and some were multi-tasking. A local funeral undertaker, Mr Shudu Magwabeni of MTG Funerals, also complained about the constant pressure, saying that the staff members were battling to cope with the high number of burials they had to perform daily. He reckons that the pandemic has drastically transformed the death-care industry, with staff also fearing that they might contract the virus. Magwabeni pleaded with South Africans to take the necessary precautions to reduce the number of cases in the country. “It (the virus) is very different. It is something that you have never seen before,” he said. The director of Marindi Funerals, Mr Kaizer Marindi, said that they were operating in a very stressful environment. “We are worried about the safety of our workers, because that comes first,” he said, adding that the job (of burying people) still had to be done. “Contrary to what some people may believe about the funeral industry, we are not happy when there is death. It’s a painful process. We’re not happy to say this is

our time to shine. We’re pushing that people stay at home, stay safe and let’s reduce the number of deaths. Let’s flatten the curve,” said Marindi. “It’s difficult to cope, because you are not sure if you’re going to contract it (the virus) or not. You have got families that you need to comfort. It’s very difficult to focus on your stress alone,” said Mr Rofhiwa Nedzamba of Cornerstone Funerals. He said that, prior to this pandemic, everyone had had their own role in the business, but now everyone had to assist where help was needed. “It is an emotionally taxing task of managing your own fears and consoling grieving relatives,” he said. The effect of the pandemic is not restricted to certain areas of the Vhembe District. Even in more remote areas such as parts of Nzhelele, funeral undertakers must absorb the constant pressure. Pfarelo Mathivha, who runs ISA Funeral Services, said as undertakers they faced a lot of challenges during this pandemic. “Sometimes we go to collect a body, not knowing that it is a Covid-related death,” she said. She believes this puts them even more at risk.

Vaccinations continue at steady pace The past two weeks, the queues at vaccination centres have been growing steadily. The private sector has also joined the fight, although this did not seem to happen without teething problems. At the Makhado Show Grounds, the teams started vaccinating people on 21 June. Initially, vaccination was only for people of 60 years and older, but the past week the 50-to-59-year-olds were also included in the programme. During a visit on Monday (12th), the queues were snaking past the entrance. People stood in only one queue before entering the vaccination room. As they entered the room, two queues formed - one for the 60-year-olds and above, and the other one for the 50-to-59ers. Most people adhered to the Covid protocols, observing social distancing and wearing masks. The Makhado Show Grounds’ gates close at 14:00, whereafter the people left in the queues are attended to. According to Ms Constance Raulinga. the Louis Trichardt Site Manager, the number of people visiting the site is increasing daily. She said that, in total, they had vaccinated 9 347 people at the site since it had opened. This number includes teachers. At the Clicks pharmacy in the Makhado Crossing Mall, the process ran less smoothly. The pharmacy participates in the private sector’s efforts to alleviate the burden on the government. Phoning the store to try and find how the process works did not help much, as the phone operators had no idea what was going on. Some residents opted to visit the Clicks store to try and wait in line to get vaccinated. One lady who visited the store on Monday was clearly very frustrated with the process followed and the lack of proper communication. “Clicks must really improve their services regarding the Covid-19 vaccination programme. I arrived there before 08:00, only to be attended to by 13:00,” she said. By 08:00 she was number 12 in the queue, but had to wait patiently for almost five hours to be vaccinated.

Dié gedagte het by my pos gevat ná die nuus oor André Botha se vertrek.

Terwyl ek destyds laat hare sny het by André, het hy verskoning gevra om deur toe te stap vir ‘n Venda man wat hom by die deur ingewag het. Terug by die haarsnyery vertel André die besoeker het jare gelede as jong seun by hom in die tuin gewerk kom werk, om geld bymekaar te maak om universiteit toe te gaan. Hy wou gaan studeer as dokter.

Maleagi 3:1.

Amor Veldsman is ‘n Graad 11-leerder by CVO Zoutpansberg. Bestanddele vir die poeding: 180g suiker 2 groot eiers 1 etl appelkooskonfyt 150g koekmeel 1 tl koeksoda 1 tl bakpoeier ½ tl sout 1 etl botter 1 tl wit asyn ¾ koppie melk

Dr Casper Venter in good spirits as he makes his way from Pietermaritzburg to Wellington in the Western Cape as part of the gruelling Freedom Challenge over a distance of 2 150km. Photos: Llewellyn Lloyd/Reblex Photography.

Haar passie is fisiese oefening. Hier is waar sy in haar element is.

Stomach bug hampers Casper’s hopes of a 15-day finish Cycling News Dr Casper Venter’s hopes of completing the gruelling Freedom Challenge in 15 days dwindled dramatically this week when a stomach bug kept him out of the race for two days. By Wednesday this week, this well-known Louis Trichardt adventurer, cyclist and medical doctor was trying to make up for lost time as he passed the 1 700 km mark of his journey. He started off in Pietermaritzburg on 1 July on what can easily be described as one of the toughest challenges in South Africa, if not in the world. This is a race that takes the cyclists across the icy cold mountain slopes near Lesotho, down to the Eastern Cape and eventually finishes in Wellington in the Western Cape. The route stretches across 2 150 gruelling kilometres, and cyclists ride unassisted and mostly on gravel roads and single-track sections. They need to have exceptional navigation skills, using only maps, and need to carry the essential stuff such as food for the day and clothes with them. A total of 56 riders embarked in batches from Pietermaritzburg, but thus far many of them have had to retire. According to the 13 July race report, the remaining peloton is now stretched over a shorter length, but all are engulfed in the

grips of the extreme winter weather. “Riding in extreme cold is foreign to most South Africans, and I bet all of our racers will have experienced their toughest of days on a bike recently. The combination of wind, rain, cold and difficulty can make every kilometre forward that much harder. The weather is always a lottery in this race, and even though the high altitude of the Malutis from Rhodes to Cradock is traditionally the coldest, a thick cold front in the Western Cape can instantly deliver a tougher sting in the tail that the exhausted riders have to overcome. A convenient lift to the finish is now very enticing, and the riders stay out there to earn that blanket – it’s hard to describe (you just have to do it),” the report reads As Casper neared the 1 700km mark of his journey on Wednesday, race favourite Fjord Jordaan was nearing the completion of his race with 2 115km behind him. By that time, he had already spent 13 days on the road, of which 10 in the bicycle saddle. Casper had also spent 13 days on the road, of which only six days were in the saddle. He still had a gruelling 400 kilometres plus to go by Wednesday evening. For those wishing to follow Casper’s progress, visit: https://freedomchallenge2021.maprogress. com/#.
