Cigarette smuggling remains a problem Zimbabwean police at Beit Bridge have intercepted a truck carrying a consignment of 790 boxes of illegal cigarettes with a street value of R3 million, which was intended for smug gling into South Africa through an illegal crossing point along the Limpopo River. The team, comprising police and Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) officials, descended on the truck at about 05:00 last Thursday and found it parked at a bushy area in Matshiloni village along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road, a few kilometres outside Beit Bridge.

Police spokesperson Insp Philisani Ndebele said they had arrested two suspects. The suspects, aged 56 and 26, were found parked along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road where they allegedly intended to offload the contraband into smaller trucks for further transportation to an illegal crossing point along the Limpopo River. The truck was towing a trailer, which was loaded with the cigarettes. “The two suspects are in custody and they will appear in court soon for smuggling and illegal possession of prohibited cigarettes. The truck and the con-

traband have since been seized by ZIMRA and they are kept at the customs warehouse,” said the police spokesperson. The cigarettes, branded Remington Gold, were loaded in Harare. Of late there has been an increase in the number of illegal cigarettes being smuggled into the country from Zimbabwe. Some of the cigarettes find their way into South Africa through Beit Bridge border post while others are smuggled through several illegal crossing points dotted along the Limpopo River.

Sharp decline in numbers helped by IOM The reception and support centre of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Beit Bridge assisted 18 368 Zimbabweans deported from South Africa with food and temporary shelter last year. That is a sharp decline compared to 27 509 deportees in 2013. IOM established the centre in 2006 to help deported border

jumpers with food and shelter. The IOM programme manager, Mr Sam Grundy, said that the majority of the migrants assisted were 25 years and older. The centre also caters for deported children with food and temporary shelter. The IOM has reception and support centres in Plumtree and Beit Bridge, where illegal immigrants deported from Botswana and South Africa receive

humanitarian assistance. The assistance includes the provision of information on safe migration, overnight accommodation, food and transport to their respective homes. The Beit Bridge Reception and Support Centre has, since its inception in 2006, assisted 385,483 returnees from South Africa. It has a capacity to handle 600 deportees at any given time.

Foto verskaf.
