Pensioner stabbed to death during alleged argument over traditional beer

According to preliminary reports, the deceased and the suspect were drinking together when an argument broke out. It is alleged that the suspect wanted the pensioner to buy him beer. When Thamaha allegedly refused to buy him traditional beer, Ngwana produced a knife and stabbed the deceased in the chest.

A niece of the deceased, Mr Timothy Thamaha, wept when he saw the corpse. “We are very traumatised as a family. We fail to understand why this young man killed him.

A community member, Mr Square Modako, described the deceased as a good friend and an uncle to everyone in the village. “He was a darling to us all,” he said, shaking his head. “I can’t understand that he’s no more.” He said he was very disturbed by the incident.

“This came as a shock to me and the whole community,” he said.

Munna Ndi Nnyi’s director, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, condemned the incident. He said that they felt ashamed as an organisation when witnessing men who still kill one another.

Mufunwaini said that it was everyone’s responsibility to foster peace and good relations in their homes and within the communities. “We are tired of murders, suicides and all other kind of crimes,” he said.

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Sgt Thilivhali Malowa, confirmed the incident and the suspect’s arrest.

“We have charged the suspect with murder,” she said.

Ngwana appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on Monday. His case was postponed to 9 January 2017 for a bail application and further investigation.

Thamaha will be buried tomorrow at the Maebane cemetery.

No new vehicle for Florence Radzilani

By Ndivhuwo Musetha When Vhembe’s executive mayor, Cllr Flo­ rence Radzilani, came into the office on 26 August, she found that R1.5 million had been allocated to buy her a new official vehicle as the current one is already old.

Instead of being excited about this, she shocked her supporting staff when she chose to postpone the purchase of the car and suggested that the budget should be used to buy four or five bakkies to be used by the people who work on water maintenance.

She said that she took the decision after she realized that the Mayor Florence Rad­ people working on the ziliani. water schemes around

Vhembe were struggling to serve the community during emergency calls, as they did not have enough vehicles to travel to the affected areas.

“When I visited the three water schemes, Thathe Vondo, Damani and Mutale, I discovered that all of them had many challenges. One of these challenges was a shortage of vehicles. On all the schemes, the workers said they failed to respond to the communities’ reports of burst pipes or other challenges, because they do not have cars.”

She said that she believed that the provision of the vehicles would go a long way to help them do their job more easily.

The spokesperson for the municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said that the procurement process was already under way to make sure that vehicles were purchased as soon as possible.

“Cllr Radzilani used her executive powers to take this humble decision and we commend her for putting the people first. It was also agreed that the executive mayor’s new vehicle will be bought during the 2017/18 financial year,” he added.

Sinyosi said.

Sinyosi has a clear vision for Makhado. “We are working so that the people of Makhado will get the best from us as leaders … The first thing I want to see is for the economy of Makhado to grow and that the people of Makhado are employed. That would be the main target,” said Sinyosi. Having said that, Sinyosi said that Makhado did face a major challenge and that was the lack of available electricity.

However, they are in the process of addressing the matter at a higher level, including talks with Eskom. “You know that Louis Trichardt, together with Musina, has been identified as a growth point. We cannot say that it [growth] will come through dreams. We need to work hard, so that we can achieve that … We said that, come 2025, we want to see Makhado as a city. If you check, there are only nine years left,” said Sinyosi.

As for the immediate future, Sinyosi said that they had several major projects planned. “By January, we will be building some roads around Waterval, Kutama/Sinthumule and around Nzhelele. Even the Waterval stadium – we will be busy doing that.” Because of her experience, having served as a portfolio head in Council’s technical department, among others, Sinyosi is confident she will achieve her goals. “I have a lot of experience, working day in and day out. I know the challenges of service delivery … Now, as mayor, I am coming up with solutions. We need to look were we failed and come up with another solution to unlock problems … This is what I am going to do in my term as mayor,” Sinyosi said.

Concern about rise in HIV infections

By Ndivhuwo Musetha The MEC for Health and Social Develop­ ment, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, is concerned about the rise of HIV/Aids infections in the Vuwani area.

In an exclusive interview with Limpopo Mirror, she said that it had been noted that many young girls had tested positive when they reported to their local clinics for pregnancy testing.

Ramathuba said the new trend was discovered after the end of the “shutdown” in the area. No schooling took place for more than three months and about 30 schools were torched and damaged when the community was protesting against the decision of being incorporated to the new municipality, now known as LIM 345. During the shutdown, a large number of SANDF members and police officers were deployed in the area to control the situation.

She added that the disturbing trend was discovered when these girls went to clinics when they were going to confirm their unexpected pregnancies. “It was then confirmed that many were pregnant and HIV positive.

When the nurses asked them to bring their partners for testing, they then revealed that they were sleeping around with some of the officers who had been deployed in the area,” Ramathuba added.

“Unfortunately, we could not take the matter further as we did not want to disturb these children during their exams as the discovery was made towards the start of the exams.

Since they have completed these exams, we are going to arrange for these girls to receive further counselling. During these further consultations, we will advise them on how to live with this disease while controlling it, so that it cannot spread further,” said a very worried Ramathuba.

Musanda Vho-Livhuwani Matsila, one of the traditional leaders whose areas were affected by the strikes, expressed shock and disappointment about the news. “It is very shocking that there would be officers who would be sleeping around with our children during these periods. In fact, it comes with embarrassment to hear this, especially when I hear this sad news during the 16 days of activism against violence on women and children in the country.”

He added that not only the officers must be blamed. “As families were displaced during these strikes, there are other men who might have taken advantage of these kids and slept with them. The people who organized these protests should have looked at the social effects on a society like this,” he added He warned that, in future, the organisers of strikes must take into consideration that their actions could have negative effects “that we will regret forever”.

New college for Malamulele area

Residents of Malamulele who waged a relentless fight to have an autonomous municipality out­ side Thulamela for years, citing one-sided service delivery favour­ ing the people of Thohoyandou, scored yet another victory. Last Friday, the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Blade Nzimande, reopened the defunct Shingwedzi College as a branch of the Vhem­ be TVET College.

The new campus comes after persistent calls by the local community to have their own tertiary institution that would be within close reach of the students in the area. Previously, students had to travel long distances to Thohoyandou and other far-flung areas, with others having to rent rooms near the college.

Members of the Malamulele Task Team, which had brought about the new municipality and new college, were also present.

After officially opening the new campus, Nzimande and his entourage moved to Malamulele Stadium where a large audience was waiting for them. On behalf of the community, the chairperson of the Vhembe House of Traditional Leaders, Hosi Busa Nxumalo said that they were happy that the government had heeded their call to have their own college closer to the community.

"We are hereby making a call on the management of the college to impart the skills to our youth that will ease unemployment and poverty in this area,” Nxumalo said.

Leading farmer laid to rest

By Elmon Tshikhudo The agricultural sector in the district of Vhembe has once again been hit hard and plunged into mourning.

This follows the death of renowned garlic farmer Mr Petros Nkhangweni Negondeni (79) of Ha-Muraga outside Thohoyandou. Negondeni, who was known as a generous person, full of love and always ready to help those in need, follows one of the biggest and celebrated tomato farmers, Dr Ntuseni Nesane, who was

buried two weeks ago.

Speaking during the funeral service at his home last Saturday (3/12), Ms Takalani Netshisahulu, who represented the garlic producers in the area, said agriculture was losing the top of the cream in Vhembe as leading farmers were passing on one after another. "We are very saddened by this death.”

The local traditional leader, Chief Ntikedzeni Muraga-Mphaphuli, praised Negondeni highly as a subject who had led an exemplary life that was worth emulating. "We have lost

a giant," he said.

The deceased's daughter, Portia Molefe, said her father was a good man who not only took care of them alone but also of the neighbours. "He was always ready to share the little he had with everyone and he assisted neighbours by creating jobs for them. He loved us all in the family; we will always remember him as his children," she said.

Negondeni is survived by two wives, eight children, 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Crime-free season for Makuya?

By Silas Nduvheni The station commander of the Makuya Police Station outside Thohoyandou, Capt Tsumembedzo Nemunga­ di, said that they wanted a crime-free area during the coming festive season and that their team, youths and women against crime, would be out in full force.

the Tshitavha-Tsha Sambandou’s God Harvest Church.

Makuya Police Station's crime-prevention coordinator, W/O Mmberegeni Mudau, said they had recruited more than 40 youths who volunteered to help them to fight crime the festive season. He added that a Good Samaritan had donated reflectors that will be used by the youths and women against crime and community policing forum members.

The reflectors will make them more visible to the

communities when fighting crimes. “We will conduct a door-to-door campaign, road blocks and also hand over crime-prevention pamphlets,” said Mudau.

He added that his team will also patrol in the villages.

A community member, Mr Mmbi Munasi, who had also donated reflectors for youths and women against crime, said he had grown up in the area and did not want crime to continue because he regarded crime as an enemy and that it did not pay.

During Ridgeway College’s annual honours evening held on Friday, 25 Novem­ ber, Ismaeel Ayob scooped up many of the school’s top presti­ gious awards. He was not only named the school’s Best Cricket Player of 2016 (as previously reported), but also received awards for being the Top Student in En­ glish, accountancy and biology. He further received an academic excellence award for maintaining an aver­ age of over 70% and Best Overall Achieve­ ment. He also received the Dilip Naik Trophy for the Best Internal AS results.

Hundreds of community mem­ bers recently converged at the Folovhodwe Community Hall, near Muswodi, to meet the lead­ ership of the Musina Municipality for the first time since they were incorporated into Musina from the now-defunct Mutale.

This was during the Mayoral imbizo organized by Musina Municipality. Folovhodwe falls within Ward 7 under the new demarcation of the municipality.

During the imbizo, Mayor Mihloti Muhlope said the service delivery issues raised by the local community would be given priority as per the integrated development plan of the municipality. She said it was important for the municipality to intensify its outreach programmes since the changes made to the municipal boundaries three months ago. “This area was part of the disestablished Mutale Municipality before the recent local government elections. Local people should live with the reality that they now fall under Musina Municipality and we

should all contribute to the development of our municipality under the newly demarcated boundaries. Before the local government elections, Musina had 6 wards and 12 councilors. The fact that we now have 12 wards and 24 councilors is an indication that our municipality is growing rapidly.”

Muhlope said according to Statistics SA, Musina had 33 061 citizens in 1996. “In 2001, the number rose to 39 310. The 2011 figures shows that our population grew to 68 359.

As I’m speaking now, our population is estimated at about 100 000. We are the only municipality in Vhembe District that recorded more than 5% growth in recent years. This is a clear indication that we are charged with more responsibilities to serve more people to their satisfaction.”

She pleaded for cooperation from traditional leaders, community structures and local community members. “We urge you to attend government and municipal meetings, so that you can be involved in the service delivery decisions that affect you.”

Caring Chief gives generously to the needy

By Elmon Tshikhudo About 70 disadvantaged families in the Muledane area received an early Christmas on Sunday, when a well-known Vhembe tradition­ al leader gave them Christmas hampers.

Chief Jerry Tshikororo handed over groceries and school uniforms to the families during an event held at the royal palace at Muledane.

The initiative was started a few years ago to assist pupils from disadvantaged families with uniforms, but later included groceries that would ensure a good Christmas for the families.

Handing over the hampers, Tshikororo said that they were con-

tinuing where they had left off last year. “Giving has become part of our lives. We started this a few years ago, inspired by the late Nelson Mandela, who taught us to care for others.” He added that many people would be spending a lot of money on “useless things, forgetting that the school year would be starting soon. We felt that we should give our children a gift of life, which is education.”

They also provided groceries to needy families to put smiles on their faces during Christmas. “This is the time of giving and sharing the little we have, and we hope this would change the conditions of the beneficiaries, at least during this period,” he said.

A 21-year-old multi-talented rapper, TyGaBoY Mukoni, is an artist to reckon with, and he promises his thousands of fans sterling performances this festive season.

His debut album, Mukoni Ndi Nne, came out in 2015 after many years of honing his vocal skills. The album has at least 10 megasongs that display his singing talent to its fullest. “It’s a strong album with strong but accessible songs, and it was financed by my manager, Phalanndwa Phalanndwa,” TyGaBoy said.

Songs from that album received favourable airplay on different radio stations and that was indication enough that he was on the right track as an artist. “People loved my music from the first when I took it out to them,” he said.

This multi-talented artist, who is a songwriter, rapper and producer all in one, said that he had travelled a

long, rocky road to success. “One has to work hard in order to make it in the industry,” he said. “Just a year after my songs were first played on the radio, I was nominated in the Afri Dzonga Music Awards 2016. Being nominated made me feel more proud of my artistic endeavours.”

Earlier this year, TyGaBoy’s music caught the ears of G-Boy, who specialises in creating hip-hop beats. He then decided to be his beat producer, creating hip-hop beats for him at no cost.

Some of his primary school memories are the rainy days when their teachers would suspend their daily lessons and tell them to go back home.

“I would use the day off from school to entertain my friends in the comfort of my home,” he said.

“I would use metal drums as music instruments, singing whichever song came to mind.”

During weekends and school holidays, he taught himself how to operate the radio at home. He would then use

empty cassettes to record himself while singing without instruments and replay them. He did all that just to hear his singing voice on the radio. He would also ask his parents to listen to his recordings, so he could get their view.

“However, they would get angry with me and beat me up instead, saying that I was wasting their empty cassettes, which were reserved for their own personal use,” he said. “However, they later realised that I was passionate about making music and decided to support me in my venture.”

In addition, his mother then decided to devote some time off to record hymn book songs with him and replayed them.

Today, this young artist’s talent continues to grow and make his parents of proud of him.

By Frank Mavhungu A local gospel music artist, Mercy Masakona Madzivhandila, received the award for the best female artist in the Gauteng Gospel Music Awards (GGMA) held at the John Kani Hall in Johannesburg last Friday evening.

The Lwamondo-based singer was nominated in two categories, best female artist and best worship song.

The winner in the best female artist category was determined through SMS voting, while the nominees in the best worship song had to perform live on stage on the day of the awards and the judges decided on the winner.

The other artists who were competing with Mercy in the best female gospel artist category were Lebo Sekgobela,

Buhle Hlangulela, Thandeka Mchunu and Monica Ncube.

Mercy was presented with a cash prize of R5 000 and a trophy during the event.

The other artists who shared the stage with Mercy in the best worship song were Lebo Sekgobela, Justice Nematswerani, Thandeka Mchunu, TT Kunene, Palesa Ravele, Simankele Qhoqho, Takie Ndou and Adrian Losper.

When asked how it felt after receiving the best gospel female artist award, Mercy said that the award was a dream come true for her. She further stated the award was testimony to the fact that good things were not only found in big cities but even in a far rural area.

Mukumela Mathoho, a Grade 8 learner at Mugoidwa Secondary School, is not only making a name for herself, but is also making history by becoming the youngest commercial bead maker in the area. Instead of roaming the streets after school and during school holidays, the young girl spends her time at home making different types of beads.

The beads are in demand in the local community and in surrounding towns and she is taking advantage of the open market. It all started three years ago after observing her

People flock to SCOAN survivor’s Greater Calvary Church Apostle Khathutshelo Ramovha says critics should only criticise after visiting the church during ser­ vices and not from hearing rumours about the church in the streets.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The Greater Calvary Church at Tshirolwe in Nzhelele, which is led by Apostle Khathutshe­ lo Ramovha, is becoming popular with people from all corners of Vhembe district as a large number are flocking into the church for a touch of a miracle.

Ramovha is the very man who survived the collapse of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Nigeria nearly two years ago and emerged after the collapse with a resounding testimony.

Ramovha said that the world had arrived at a point where people needed to hear pastors preach messages of hope and love and not condemnation. “People are suffering and their only hope can be found in Jesus,” Ramovha said.

“Today, when I see all these large numbers of people flocking into the church which I lead, I smile and get to understand the reason why God had spared my life from death by rescuing me from the SCOAN’s collapse.”

Our reporter attended one service at The Greater Calvary Church, where the apostle was praying for people and announcing that God had given him powers to heal all kinds of sicknesses, from asthma, cancer, leprosy, and eye problems to kidney failure. Most people who attended the service seemed happy and even announced that every one of them had a testimony to tell about the kind of help they had received from the church.

“I know there may be many critics who will just speak ill about the work which the Lord is doing through me,” Ramovha said. “Don’t just criticise; come to the church and see if God’s spirit will not touch you. You too, who are critics, will testify good things about this great ministry only if you come to church. So, don’t criticise from just seeing stories in the media or hearing about us from people in the streets.”

Youth benefit from arts tour

Staff members of MKK Insurance Company organized a Christmas party for more than 200 orphans and vulnerable children from the five orphanage homes in the Vhembe re­ gion for a day-long Christmas party at Shuma Park near Shayandima last Saturday. Pastors who had enrolled for spiritual training at the Armed 4 Harvest Ministries received diplomas and certificates during a ceremony at Biaba on Saturday. Dr Fitzgerald Dzivhani, founder of Armed 4 Harvest Ministries, encouraged the students to start their own min­ istries. “Do not relax, saying you don’t have a ministry. Start your own ministry, because there are many lost souls out there.” he said. He further advised them to remain true to the scriptures and not to love money. The ceremony is an annual event at the church. In our photograph are the graduates and the board members of the church.

At least 30 youths from Makhado, Polokwane and Moletjie benefited from an excursion that aimed to take them on an artistic tour of Johannesburg.

The Charismatic Rhythms project was launched on 30 November and all 30 youths had to embark on a journey of igniting their talents. The programme was sponsored by the Arts & Culture Trust and the National Arts Council of South Africa.

The founder of Charismatic Rhythms, Ms Kagiso Kekana, said that the youths camped at Mphatha Lodge in Hammanskraal. “They interacted with Golden Youth Club, a performing arts group from the North West, with the purpose of having an artistic cultural exchange programme,” Kekana

said. In Johannesburg, the group visited the Moving into Dance Mophatong studios for a four-hour session, where they learned techniques and dance styles from professional facilitators. The group also visited the Mary Fitzgerald Square, which is the home of performing arts events. “We had a tour at Museum Africa and ended off the day with a tour and show at the famous Market Theatre at the Newtown Junction,” she said.

On day two, the focus was on drama, acting and music, and the artistic excursion began at the Sasani Studios in Balfour Park, where they visited the Skeem Saam production house and mingled with the cast members. “We were welcomed by a publicist named Bonga and proceeded with the tour by having a motivational talk

by three of the actors, Cornet Mamabolo (Tbos), Clement Maosa (Kwaito) and Oros (Jama),” she said. “The actors really shared their heartfelt experiences and advice for our upcoming artists.”

Another highlight was a visit to the Tshwane Gospel Choir in Pretoria. “We had an opportunity to be mentored about the music industry,” Kekana said.

“We also had a tour of their recording studio and were blown away by their performance. We ended the day with a performing arts cultural exchange between Charismatic Rhythms members and the Golden Youth Club members by the fireplace.”

The Koze Koze radio meets TV slot is a show that kicks off each night’s programming. In the slot a Phalaphala FM presenter will present his or her Top-10 playlist and introduce each music video. Munyai started his primary schooling at Mashau Primary School and proceeded with his secondary education to Vhafamadi Secondary School. He matriculated in 2002 and enrolled for a BA in media studies with the University of Venda in 2003.

“I also obtained a national certificate in journalism in 2013, which I acquired through a learnership at Kundani Training College,” he said.

He mentioned that he struggled a lot from 2009 till January 2015 “as a hustler at a community radio station, working without pay. I was not earning a living, but I knew what I wanted to achieve in life.”

His talent and hard work opened

doors for him and he joined Makhado FM in January 2009. “I believe that hard work has a way of paying off, even when it might take time,” he said. “In life I have learned that all dreams, if earnestly pursued, do come true.”

After a short-lived stint at the station as a newsreader, Mzazie joined the station’s sports team where he presented Sports Zone.

He joined Phalaphala FM in 2015 as a sport producer and was offered a contract with Phalaphala FM for SABC Sport.

He is currently producing the Zwamitambo show from Monday to Thursday between 19:00 and 20:00. Zwamitambo is one of the most popular sports shows in the country, he said.

Munyai is also a soccer player for the SABC radio team. He said that the kind of work he did at the radio station needed one to exercise in order to keep mentally stable and feel energised all the time. “Today I am happy that I am doing what I love most – working in the media industry.”

Prof publishes autobiography in Xitsonga

The head of the Department of Paediatric Pulmonology and Allergies at the University of Limpopo and at the Polokwane Provincial Hospital, Prof Samu­ el Malamulele Risenga, has just launched his autobiography.

What makes his story unique is that he has written his story, A Ri Hlanhlenkangi, in his mother tongue, Xitsonga.

It took Risenga about five years to finish the book. The writing experience was mixed with emotions because he was reliving the experiences he went through in his life. “I would at times feel sad and at times feel happy for having overcome obstacles on the way,” he said.

He decided to write his autobi-

ography in Xitsonga because he could express himself much better in the language. “Another reason is that we need to promote our indigenous languages,” he said. “If we do not do that, these languages will slowly be forgotten. Our languages are actually very rich in expressions and these needs to be maintained.”

He said that the book showed that poverty should not be a determining factor in terms of achievements. It was possible to make it against all odds. “I would like to recommend it to the youth as it is an inspirational work,” he said.

The book was recently launched during a glittering evening at Oasis Hotel in Giyani. The launch was well attended by professionals across many fields and community members who all came to cele-

brate a life told on paper and told in the language of the people.

Attendees who had read the book before the launch all praised Risenga for his amazing use of the Xitsonga language in telling his story. Some even quoted from the book, while others spoke fondly about certain parts or chapters that they had found entertaining.

A prominent poet and publisher, Vonani Bila, said that the significance of writing an autobiography was that one's adventures in life were preserved for posterity.

“Although not every life lived bears the same weight, it is nonetheless crucial to record each life using your own pen, so that your life is not misrepresented by secondary observers,” Bila indicated. “Of greater importance is to write in our indigenous languages,

which carry the richness of cultural expression. Writing in English is a waste of ink if we consider the shortage of books in African languages.”

The director of Nhlalala Books, who published the autobiography, Mr Moses Mtileni, said that A Ri Hlanhlekangi was one of only a handful of books in the genre in the Xitsonga language, with the ones preceding it published largely pre-1994.

“A Ri Hlanhlekangi is published as part of Nhlalala Books’ effort to push boundaries in the language by publishing genres neglected and experimental works in other genres,” he stated.

Miss Commonwealth ambassador

A local beauty, Avhatendi Musandiwa, has been crowned Miss Commonwealth SA 2017 Ambassador.

The 26-year-old Musandiwa was crowned during a glittering ceremony held at the Summer Place Boutique Hotel in Lambton, Germiston.

She is currently working as an occupational therapist at St Ritas hospital in the Sekhukhune district.

“I feel honoured and blessed to be given the platform to be part of Miss Commonwealth. To be an ambassador of change, to influence and empower the young people in the country,” Musandiwa said. She said that she already had big plans for next year. “I am planning to go around schools in Limpopo with Upower Africa and the Miss Commonwealth brand to inspire young people. I want them to dream and know that their dreams can be achieved,” she said.

Odifentse Lehasa was crowned the queen of Miss Commonwealth South Africa 2016/17, while Andricia Hinckermann and Portia Phele were crowned the first and second princess respectively. Mandiza Seliti was crowned Miss Commonwealth SA Charity.

For the pageant, each of the contestants submitted a portfolio on charitable work they were doing in their communities. The portfolios were used as the criteria by the judges to crown the winners.

Cobra Stars on top in home derby

Cobra Stars secured a place in the next round of the Total Challenge by beating Duthuni Happy Boys 8­7 at the Univen Stadium on Saturday. The game was a typical home derby from the onset, with both sides creating and wasting scoring opportunities. Happy Boys were the first to upset their fans.

Their right winger, Tsilufhadzo Tshikhudo, received a neat pass from Ernest Nengwenani just outside the penalty box in the 15th minute.

Tshikhudo, however, chose to shoot aimlessly.

The ball missed the target by inches, much to the fans’ disappointment.

Happy Boys were the first to effect change to their starting line-up.

They introduced Fhatuwani Mukhuba and sacrificed Mvelaphanda Mulaudzi in the 24th minute. This came after Mulaudzi failed to give the ball a final touch after scramble within the box.

Cobra Stars threatened to score in the 29th minute. Lucky Mulovhedzi went loose from the left corner but shot wide from close range.

Fhumulani Mushavhanamadi and Livhuwani Mukosi both of Happy Boys were reprimanded with cards, following a continued argument with the referee towards the end of the first half.

Cobra Stars replaced Siphiwe Maboya and Lucky Mulovhedzi with Arivhanzhi Sekara and Thendo Nwashe early in the last half. Happy Boys realized that it was not their day when their fast forward, Unarine Mukwevho, missed an obvious chance in the 78th minute. Athletes gear up for weekend’s race

By Frank Mavhungu The Thohoyandou Athletics Club, in conjunc­ tion with the MM Active clothing company, will stage a road race in Thohoyandou tomor­ row morning (Saturday).

According to one of the organizers of the fun run, Mr Mpho Magoro, the distance for the race will be 5 and 10 km and a half-marathon (21.1 km). The registration for the event started two weeks ago and will continue until tomorrow

morning.

Magoro stated that the event would commence at the Thohoyandou Stadium at 06:30 and end at the same venue. According to him, some of the sponsors for the event include Thohoyandou Wimpy, Capitec Bank, Debonaires Pizza, Professional Insurance Brokers, Liberty Life Insurance, Coca-Cola Fortune and the Thulamela Municipality.

Two high-profile athletes, Ludwick Mamabolo and Rufus Letsatsi, will conduct coaching clinics at the Thohoyandou Stadium today. The first 500 athletes to arrive at the winning point will each receive a T-shirt.

After scoring two early goals, Univen relaxed as if victory was already certain. The visitors from Maungani did not give in, despite an early setback. They continued to regroup from behind in their desperate search for goals.

Univen opened their account in the 18th minute when Mulisa Netshitongwe finished off Xinavona Chauke’s square pass. Mighty Chiefs looked confused after Univen’s opening goal.

That gave the students a good chance to dictate terms in the middle of the park. A clearing error by the Chiefs’ defender gave rise to Univen’s second goal in the 29th minute. Xinavona Chauke capitalised on the error and beat the keeper with a ground cutter to bring the half-ime score to 2-0.

Pfano Mulaudzi of Univen was cautioned with a card for dangerous play three minutes into the last half. Mighty Chiefs took the game to the home side in the last 30 minutes of the game.

They reduced the margin in the 68th minute.

Thendo Nemahunguni was brought down within the box and the referee awarded a penalty to Mighty Chiefs. Rodney Tshigoba made no mistake from the white spot.

Univen replaced their Rastafarian striker, Rudzani Nemahagala, with Rotshidzwa Nyadzani late in the game.

That did not stop Mighty Chiefs from scoring the equalizer through Thembuluwo Rambau, who caught the keeper napping with a half volley.

Both sides played defensive football for the remaining part of the game. The winner was determined through penalty shootout as the score was still 2-2 when the referee blew the final whistle. Roggert Nyundu joins Amazulu

Another good ABC victory for Madridtas S

Madridtas continued to pave their way up the points ladder by beating A1 Terrors 2-1 in their ABC Motsepe League match at the Tshifudi Stadium on Satur­ day.

As if they were playing in front of their home crowd, Terrors approached the game aggressively, with their strikers showing a huge appetite for goals.

They knocked on the opposition's door for the first time in the 10th minute. Solomon Seopela tried his luck from the edge of the

box with a half volley. The keeper of Madridtas, Thuso Nevhufumba, stretched to the limit to execute a brilliant save.

That was a wake-up call to the defenders of Madridtas, Khathutshelo Mukomafhedzi, Lutendo Mulaudzi and Maduvha Mudologi.

Madridtas had their chance in the 19th minute, but their bulldozer striker, Pfunzo Tshikotshi, suffered the pain of watching his ground cutter going wide.

The visitors from Modimolle were the first to find the net. A defender of Madridtas, Mulisa Phalanndwa, handled the ball

within his own penalty box. The referee, Mr Sandani Nelufule, was quick to award a penalty to Terrors.

Johannes Diale scored from the white spot with a ground cutter.

The home side found the equalizer nine minutes later.

Reagan Maluleke was on target with a header, following a neat pass from Gift Nemutandani. Two defenders for Terrors, Elias Morapedi and Freddy Tlale, were reprimanded with yellow cards for the use of abusive language towards the referee in the 37th minute.

Madridtas replaced Tondani Nkhumeleni and Reagan Malulele

with Rofhiwa Netshiungani and Khuliso Gunyule respectively in the 59th minute.

Netshiungani formed a deadly combination with Pfunzo Tshikotshi and Dakalo Nemakonde at the forefront. Dakalo Nemakonde was warned with a card for obstructing Lawrence Seema in the 74th minute. Madridtas scored their winning goal via Dakalo Nemakonde seven minutes before the final whistle. Madridtas solidified their defence by introducing Lucky Masutha for Khathutshelo Nemakonde in the dying minutes of the game.

Goalless draw

By Frank Mavhungu The Limpopo derby between Magezi FC and Black Leopards at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday ended in a goalless draw. The absence of Sphelele Ntshangase in the Leopards’ midfield was evident from the onset as it was difficult for Lidoda Duvha to penetrate the defence of Magezi.

Thivhavhudzi Ndou, the Leopards’ centre back, was the first player to go into the referee’s book. Ndou was lucky to escape

with only a yellow card after tackling Temptation Chiwunga from behind in the 15th minute. Leopards had themselves to blame for not sealing the game in the first half. Instead of playing their normal carpet football, the Thohoyandou outfit ballooned from behind and made it difficult for the strikers to control the ball.

Leopards’ keeper, Aubrey Mathibe, denied Magezi a sure goal when he palmed Silas Maziya’s half volley away for a corner kick in the 39th minute. Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, Leopards introduced Ivan Mahangwahaya at the expense
