Wie kan so iets doen?

“Ek treur vreeslik oor my kat en is baie kwaad en ontsteld,” sê Lezelle du Toit van Louis Trichardt, wie se kat verlede Dinsdag met ‘n windbuks doodgeskiet is. “Ek wil almal daar buite wie se katte dalk in gevaar is net laat weet hiervan. Dit is ‘n ontsettende leemte wat gelaat word as ‘n mens se kat so ‘n onmenslike dood sterf.”

By nadere ondersoek was daar ‘n gaatjie in haar maag – definitief veroorsaak deur ‘n windbuks-patroon.

Drie ander “praktykkatte” is dood aangetref.

Anger growing over bungling Vhembe Municipality

The chronic water shortages in Makhado sparked a mass meeting on Saturday, 8 October, in the Ferdie Beyers Hall in Louis Trichardt, during which residents from both local and rural communities expressed their frustration with the inability of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) to guarantee a constant water supply.

The meeting was organised within 72 hours after residents formed the Fight 4 Service Delivery Facebook group that already had more than 400 members by the time the meeting took place. Although the group will focus on all service-delivery issues, their priority right now is water.

For the better part of two months now, Louis Trichardt and surrounds have had to endure dry taps with sporadic incidents of drinking water actually reaching homes for a couple of hours and, in extreme cases, maybe for a day or two. This is due to continuous breakdowns at both the Albasini Water Treatment Plant and water-supply pipeline feeding communities from the dam.

- Filippense 3:14.

Most recently, on 3 October, the Albasini Wa ter Treatment Plant had to be shut down again because of damaged pumps at booster pump sta tion 3. This once again meant no water for Louis Trichardt and Tshikota. These damaged pumps were eventually repaired on 9 October, after which the pumping of water resumed. Again this “flicker of hope” was short-lived as an apparent pipe burst because of excessive pressure in the pipeline caused the Albasini plant to be shut down again. By Wednesday morning, some residents reported a trickle of water in their taps, while others were still completely without water.

During the mass meeting, speaker after speaker placed a question mark over the VDM’s technical capabilities and the general consensus was that the VDM has neither the leadership nor the technical capabilities to be entrusted to de liver the most basic human right, which is access to clean drinking water.

“It is high time, if our President is honest when he says we need people who are qualified to run these institutions, that we need to raise this issue,” said one of the speakers, Mr Law rence Makhado.

deny people services or water for their own ben efit,” said Muluvhu. Whether this is true or not, several members of the meeting concurred and even went as far as to say that it seemed as if the regions’ water-supply infrastructure was being sabotaged deliberately.

Regarding people benefiting from the current chaos, Muluvhu briefly touched on the issue. “There are water tankers that are hired, on con tract, to deliver water to the people. So, there are people benefiting millions and millions of rands to make sure we do not have water. This means that, even if we try to come up with a solution to try and fix this water problem, because it is to the benefit of someone, they will always make sure that whatever solution we come up with does not work, because their solution lines their pockets,” said Muluvhu.

practically be fixed and problems resolved.

The meeting was somewhat divided about the immediate way forward. Some wanted to protest, calling on the masses to march on the municipalities (both Makhado and Vhembe) in their thousands. Others stated that following the legal route would be more constructive and not destructive as marches almost always turn out to be. But following the legal route as an organisa tion costs money. Whatever route the structure is going to follow, a clarion call was made from the floor for communities of all races to unite in the fight for water as it affects everybody. “What they [Makhado and the VDM] are counting on is that the people cannot unite,” said speaker Mr Mavhimbi Mashamba.

Muluvhu’s solution was for the residents of the region to go and sit down and identify qualified and skilled engineers and technicians to tackle the situation. “If we are going to fix the problem, let us put together a team of technical experts that deals specifically with water. Get this team to access, analyse and survey the problem and pin down a solution. Put it on paper,” said Mulu vhu. Only then, said Muluvhu, can the munic ipality be held accountable for things that can

Regarding the issue of money and funding, community member Mr Hitesh Dave proposed forming a Section 21 organisation. For this purpose, he offered his facility and services free of charge. The meeting decided to form a committee that would take the planning and issues raised during the meeting further. The committee chosen consists of Messrs Chris de Lange, Hitesh Dave, Mavhimbi Mashamba, Kev in Muluvhu, Moses Thovhakale, Wikus Swart, Ms Ndivhadzo Lukheli and Ms Princess Anne Sheilah.

Paulus

Hy was doelgerig in sy strewe.

One speaker who did not mince his words about the current state of affairs was Mr Kevin Muluvhu. “The issue that brought everybody here today is the issue of water. We’ve had com plaints, we’ve had forums, we’ve had WhatsApp groups – there are so many structures in town that try and speak to the issue of water in town,” he said. Despite this, he said, the problem per sisted and this was why, according to him, the regions’ youth might be reluctant to join these structures. “If this forum, or this structure that is currently being formed, is going to work and is going to be effective and efficient, then I think that we need to be dealing with the problem head-on as opposed to trying to window dress or sugar coat the problem,” he said.

Muluvhu said that, regarding the water issue in town, he would like to point out that water was an infrastructural problem. “At least, that is what we are told. Every second day you would be told that there is a valve that burst. Every second day you would be told that they are fixing the Albasini Water Treatment Plant. Every other day you would be told that tankers - and personally I have never seen a single tanker in town - would come to deliver water. I saw a recent article by the minister of water and sanitation speaking about this entire water problem and the fact that it is actually a cartel of people who deliberately

More promises by Vhembe as anger also flares up in Giyani

On Thursday, 6 October, the Minister of Wa ter and Sanitation, Mr Senzo Mchunu, visited the Vhembe region to, among other things, inspect the laying of pipelines from Mavambe village to the Nandoni Dam.

Mchunu was accompanied by his deputy min ister, Mr David Mahlobo, the executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, the chairperson of Lepelle Northern Water, Mr Ndweleni Mphephu, other councillors and traditional leaders.

Mchunu’s inspection of the project came after angry Giyani residents took to the streets on Monday, 3 October, in protest of the missed deadline for completion of the project, which was 30 September this year. The minister assured Giyani residents and communities close

to the Nandoni Dam that the department was committed to delivering clean drinking water from taps to the communities as promised. “We recognise your anger, frustrations and the disap pointment on the missed deadline, and we take accountability. However, we remain committed to deliver water to these communities as prom ised,” Mchunu said.

According to Mchunu, part of the delay was caused by traditional leaders who blocked the process. “While we could not have foreseen these and other challenges, we are now better equipped and hope to finalise the outstanding

issues today,” he said.

“What we saw on our site visits in terms of the work that is being done here in Giyani represents a great deal of progress to get water to the residents. We are closing in on a trench between Nsami Dam and the river, from which we are extracting water. It is through this canal that water from Nandoni will pass into the Nsa mi Dam,” he said.

Mchunu later also addressed stakeholders within the Mopani District Municipality on the progress made on the Nandoni-Nsami water project.

Mark nominated as one of 2022’s outstanding men

“This is something I never expected or went after,” says Sadhasivan (Mark) Pakkiree, well-known local business man. Mark was nominated and recognised by Dr Carl Wilson of the USA as one of 20 outstanding men in 2022 by means of the LMA Awards – addressing the extraordinary achievements and life-changing stories of world-class entrepreneurs and leaders.

Mark shares that Wilson is an international bestselling au thor, multiple-award-winning humanitarian and dynamic entrepreneur – to name but a few. Dr Wilson was awarded “Man of the Year” by LMA (Leadership Mind Ambassa dor), a Nigerian-based compa ny. “Dr Wilson is a follower of people around the world who contribute to or do good things for communities.

“My wife, Roshini, was first recognised by Wilson some years ago - for The Sanjit Train

of Hope. This Train of Hope (in our late son’s name) is meant to provide hope for the financially disadvantaged communities mainly in the rural establish ments. The project is funded solely by Thohoyandou Beer Distributors, which is owned by me and Roshini,” Mark says.

Mark continues to tell his success story by mentioning that Wilson started following him, Mark, for approximately two years. Wilson said: “Your story is a good story” and he invited Mark to do a write-up that was published in the LMA Magazine (available online at bit.ly/3roaJY3).

“The way that our company handled Covid-19 was, for instance, one of the things that Wilson wanted me to include in my submission. We closed down five times in total. The prohibition of selling of alcohol and transportation thereof had a huge impact on the business. During this time, we never panicked and paid all our em ployees in full. Where The San jit Train of Hope is more ‘in the face’, we don’t go for prestige at Thohoyandou Beer Distrib utors. Behind the scenes, we help and assist. Whether it be with our daily cooked meals, food parcels or quarterly ham pers,” shares Mark.

The couple was in Port Elizabeth previously and took over Thohoyandou Beer Distributors in 2016. It started off with 56 employ

ees and now has more than a 100 employees. “We seek to be the best organisation who looks after its people and to be connected to them. By doing this, we have grown. We look at people at face value. We don’t use labour brokers – we do all the contracts and appointments ourselves and are consistent in our policies and procedures. This makes us reputable. We have hardworking, dedicated staff,” Mark mentions.

The actual LMA awards event will take place during November in Nigeria. The Pak kirees can unfortunately not at tend because of other commit ments. “All the award winners have been chosen because they are business leaders contribut ing to society – throughout the world,” says Mark.

Mark is grateful for other op portunities that this award also gives him. He was a speaker at an event arranged by the En dorphin Foundation over the past weekend. His own journey of perseverance and never giv ing up is an inspiration on its own and needs to be shared.

“Many of our 550 customers own enterprises serving hot meals and cold beer. Load shedding causes the serving of cold meals and hot beer. We need to support each other. We are a small community. No matter how hard times are, we do not live in isolation. We need to motivate and give each other hope,” concludes Mark.

The accident occurred after a truck driver ap parently unhooked his trailer on a roadside island after suffering a breakdown. Another truck apparently swerved to avoid the trailer and then allegedly collided semi-head-on with the tour bus traveling from Beitbridge to Johannesburg. As a result of the accident, the trailer caught fire. Although early morning traffic on the N1 was severely affected by the accident, by mid-morning the N1 was open again. Photos: Wouter Veldman.

Hierdie week, 25 jaar

SANDF members return home after six months for well-deserved rest

Border Patrol

The joint technical officer commanding of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Limpopo, Col Chuene Samuel Mabotja, commended SANDF members for their hard work in securing the country. Mabotja was speaking during the official ceremony to release more than 700 SANDF battalion members who had completed their six months’ deployment period around the Musina area.

The event took place at Musina Operational Army Base on Wednesday, 5 October, where members were also awarded certificates of appreciation. The members were deployed around Musina on 30 March this year and were also securing areas such as Madimbo, Pontdrift and Swartwater. The members are

now allowed to take a rest at their respective homes for 24 days before they resume their official duties.

Mabotja said the members needed to be admired because they had put their country and its citizens first. He added that, because the members had worked under difficult conditions and sometimes with limited resources, it demonstrated their love and commitment towards their work.

“Your discipline, hard work, loyalty and dedication make you stand out in your work to protect the country. We wish you all the best as you go to your respective homes to take a rest,” said Mabotja.

He thanked the outgoing battalion commander, Lt Col Nyolo Martin Ntsieng, and various local stakeholders for outstanding work. “You have led this outgoing battalion

very well and we encourage you to do the same in your next deployment. We have no doubt that the support and love you received here from different stakeholders will also be the same with the new incoming battalion commander. Special thanks to the SAPS, Department of Agriculture, SARS, Department of Transport, Port Health, Messina Hospital, Border Management Authority and Musina Municipality for supporting our outgoing battalion commander and our members, so that they could carry out their duties with ease.”

Ntsieng said the successes of his battalion were the result of teamwork and dedication. He also passed on his gratitude to the local stakeholders and the members under his command for giving him the needed support to perform his duties diligently.

Partnership between CPA and KNP yielding positive results

Amidst many stories of land claims that had turned sour, causing even more misery for the communities involved, the case of the Makuleke community, who seems to have es tablished a system that not only works for the people but also adds to the tourism treasures of the country, brings hope.

The Makulekes lived on the north-eastern border of the country, at Pafuri, where the Kruger National Park (KNP) was later estab lished. In 1969, about 3 000 households of the Makuleke community were forcefully removed from their land, which fell inside the KNP’s proclaimed area. The Makulekes were the last people to be relocated out of the park.

According to Ms Mavis Hatlane, chairperson of the Makuleke Communal Property Associa tion (CPA), the community’s opposition against this conservation initially stemmed from the rac

ist approach used by the government of the day. The start of democracy in South Africa in 1994, however, paved the way for this community to reclaim their land and the community agreed to make the KNP a conservation area. In 1998, the CPA successfully reclaimed a part of their land, until the full 24 000ha was returned to them.

Vumelana Advisory Fund, a non-profit organi sation that works with land-reform beneficiaries, facilitated a partnership between the CPA and SANParks (the investor), who agreed to have a joint management board of three members from each entity. SANParks’ role is to ensure the conservation of the land, while the community can use the land for commercial purposes, on condition they take strict caution to maintain conservation measures.

The Makuleke community benefits from several projects. Two lodges in the area, Return Africa and The Outpost, have employed around 101 people, including some from the Makuleke

“Use alternative entrances to KNP”

South African National Parks (SANParks) has urged tourists to consider utilising other entrance gates into the Kruger National Park (KNP), following the recent attack on a group of four German tour ists and the subsequent fatal shooting of one of the group members at Numbi Gate last week.

In a press statement issued after the tourist’s death, SAN Parks acting chief executive officer Ms Hapiloe Sello said the organisation was deeply saddened by the recent spate of attacks on visitors en route to the iconic national park, particularly on the road leading to Numbi Gate south of the

park, “and urges tourists with active and future bookings to use other entrance gates to the park”.

“We fully appreciate that this incident has brought a lot of apprehension to many of our loyal local and international visitors, which could result in cancellations for planned visits to the park and surrounding areas. It is thus important for us to remind our loyal visitors that Kruger has a total of 10 gates that tourists can safely enter from,” said Sello.

In the south of the park, five other entrances, namely Paul Kruger, Phabeni and Orpen Gate via the R40 from White River, as well as Malelane and Crocodile Bridge via the N4 toll road towards Komatipoort in

Mpumalanga, are available. In the north of the park, visitors can enter through Phalaborwa, Punda Maria or Pafuri and lastly, Giriyondo Border Post allows access directly from Mozambique

Sello said with the tourism industry currently in the midst of a post-Covid-19 recovery plan, such incidents under mined the marketing efforts of tourism stakeholders. She called on the law-enforcement agencies to leave nothing to chance in bringing the perpetrators to book. “We also urge members of the adjacent communities to the Kruger National Park to assist with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects,” said Sello.

community. The Makuleke Cultural Centre has employed three people, Makuleke Eco Training Camp five people, while Biodiversity Special Projects (BSP) has 26 staff members working for water and in the wetlands.

“The community has come a long way in this process. It has been crucial for the Makuleke Traditional Council to find a balance in meeting the needs of the community, while at the same time ensuring the protection of this biodiverse zone, as this land they now own is a central part of the greater ecosystem of the Kruger National Park,’ said Hatlane.

The CPA has also established partnerships with institutions such as the South African College for Tourism, which offers hospitality training, the Southern African Wildlife College, which provides field-ranger and conservation-re lated studies, and the Tracker Academy, which focuses on field guiding.

Sunday 13 November

Remembrance Day

On Sunday, 13 November, the South African National Defence Force, military veterans and civilians will spend two minutes remembering those who had made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country as part of Armistice Day, also called Remembrance Day.

At 05:00 on Monday, 11 November 1918, a document was signed that brought an end to the First World War. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, the guns fell silent. The war that was supposed to end all wars had come to an end, but not before an estimated nine million people had lost their lives.

To pay homage those who died in the war and subsequent wars, Remembrance Day is commemorated annually. The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) of Louis Trichardt will be holding their annual Remembrance Day parade and wreath-laying ceremony on 13 November at 10:30 for 11:00 at their Turbi Hills Shell Hole at 66 Burger Street.

Slegs hoë-resolusie digitale foto’s (verkieslik landskap-for maat) sal aanvaar word.

082 603 2419 of 015 516 4997 (tydens kantoorure).

Renewable-energy scholarship offered

Scholarship

The Globeleq Scholarship Fund (GSF), the renewable energy indus try’s flagship scholarship programme that accounts for a sizeable percent age of the industry’s funded scholar ships and reaches across the country, has announced the opening of its upcoming 2023 academic year appli cations. The fund is open nationally for any national diplomas or BTech degrees in mechatronic or electrical engineering, in addition to select provincial categories, designed to benefit specific communities that fall within the renewable-energy map.

Having launched eight years ago, when the sector was in its nascency, the fund has already supported more than 370 students, with bursaries valued at more than R20 million. Hence, this tertiary-education-funding vehicle is actively contributing towards the coun

try’s transformation agenda, the Just Energy Transition, and the industry’s drive for gender diversity.

The GSF Engineering fund is de signed to support the renewable energy sector and ensure a pipeline of qualified talent, in addition to contributing to the long-term sustainability of the communities in which Globeleq’s eight solar and wind-power plants operate. The fund has evolved over the years to prioritise local youths, so that they boost their local economy after they have completed their studies. The GSF Communities fund is open to students who are studying any course; however, these students must reside within a 50km radius of Globeleq’s eight solar and wind-power plants, which include the Soutpan Solar Plant near Vivo, Limpopo.

the Nkowankowa Cricket Club in the first round of matches in the new provincial Impa la Premier League.

The game was decided at the Louis Trichardt Oval, with Nkowankowa going in to bat first. They managed a decent 233 runs before being bowled out in 46.1 overs. Two of the Nkowan kowa batsmen managed half centuries, namely opener Nyiko Skikwambana (53) and Khaif Patel (51), in at number five. Other batsmen who made double-digit contributions were Nhlanhla Skikwambana (21), Mubin Patel (28), Chris Mathebula (26), Artwell Mokgologoto (15) and Muhammed Sagir (11).

The top of the bowler for Louis Trichardt was Sahil Patel, taking 3/25/8. Dirk van den Berg took 2/44/5, while JP Coetzee, Skonza Nxasana, Paulo Piorek, Leon Olwage and Salman Patel each took one wicket.

The Louis Trichardt batting line-up was in all sorts of trouble early on, with the first wicket down without any runs on the score board. The second wicket feel for only eight runs, after which it was 10/3, 17/4, 30/5, 39/6 and 50/7. The only meaningful partnership was between Salman Patel and JP Coetzee, who racked up 83 runs (31 and 52 respectively) to take the score to 123/8. The last two wickets fell with the score on 131/10, giving Nkowankowa a 102-run victory.

The pick of the bowlers for Nkowankowa were Artwell Mokgologoto (4/24/7) and Chris Mathebula (4/35/8.4) while Don Radebe and Tshepo Mhlongo each took one wicket.

Louis Trichardt’s next clash in the provin cial premier league will be against the Phoenix Cricket Club at the Duiwelskloof Oval this coming Sunday.

T10-liga beloof lopiefees

Toeskouers is welkom.
