Behind enemy lines

Suddenly they found themselves in a life-anddeath situation on foreign soil. From all quarters a murderous mob was converging on them, and were it not for quick forward thinking, 25-yearold Sean van Niekerk from Louis Trichardt and his mates would not have lived to tell their tale.

Sean’s recounting of their ordeal sounds more like part of the script of the 2001 Hollywood blockbuster Black Hawk Down. The film is based on the battle of Mogadishu in Somalia on 3 and 4 October 1993. After a failed mission by a joint American Special Forces operation to capture self-proclaimed president-to-be Mohamed Farrah Aidid, members of Task Force Ranger’s team got caught behind enemy lines. The initial operation was planned to take an hour, but became an overnight standoff and rescue operation that left 18 American soldiers dead and 73 wounded. Toit Story. Du Toit, a former South African Special Forces operator, was also captured behind enemy lines by FAPLA soldiers in Angola in May 1985.

He and two fellow South African Special Forces operators were deployed into Angola as part of Operation Cabinda. The mission also failed, with only Du Toit surviving.

Although Sean and his mates are not soldiers, they are waging a war - the war against poaching.

He forms part of an elite anti-poaching team funded by the International Anti-Poaching Foundation.

They operate in a protective corridor between South-Africa and Mozambique, known as the Greater Lebombo Conservancy. Sean and his team are in charge of two sections of this corridor on the Mozambique side, a 40km-long piece of conservancy known as the Sabie Game Park that stretches from approximately the Sabie River to the Massintonto River, as well as another 8 000ha piece of the corridor nearer to the Massingir Dam. There is no doubt that Sean and his team are effective.. “A year ago, between 17 and 18 groups of poachers were coming into the area. The last four months, we’ve zeroed it. Kruger [Kruger National Park] told us that there has been a 90% decrease in poaching in the two areas we are operating in,” said Sean during an interview with the Zoutpansberger on Monday.

It was business as usual on 1 October for Sean and his team in their endless fight against poachers.

Since the unit is so effective in the area, the poachers have started looking at other ways to enter both the conservancy and the KNP. This entails entering through less-controlled pieces of land bordering the areas in which Sean operates.

At around noon, Sean’s team, operating just south of the Corruman Dam, radioed him that they had made contact with a group of three poachers and subsequently managed to arrest one man, while seizing the poacher’s bakkie, two buffalo carcasses and a rifle. At that stage, Sean was in the town of Corruman. (Contd on P2)

Trapped anti-poaching unit members in fight for their lives in hostile town

The Makhado Police made several drug-related busts last week.

The most important was made on 6 October.

Undercover police officials, busy with routine patrols, were just about to pull over a blue Nissan sedan to perform a random search of the vehicle.

According to the police’s spokesperson, Const Irene Radzilane, the driver decided, however, to speed away. This was close to Jai Jai Jai Auto in Kort Street.

The police phoned the charge office to send back-up vehicles to chase after the driver, which led to a high-speed chase. The driver continued north, speeding through a red traffic light at the corner of Krogh and Rissik Street, nearly causing an accident. The police, however, were faster and caught up with the suspect near the entrance to the Golden Fountain tavern and forced him off the road.

While searching the vehicle, the police discovered a large quantity of illegal drugs hidden inside. The value of the drugs is estimated to be more than R10 000. Some of the drugs were identified on the crime scene as crystal meth. There

were also stacks of small bags that contained a powdery substance believed to be cocaine. The police are still awaiting test results to confirm the exact contents of all the recovered drugs.

The driver of the Nissan was arrested and taken to the charge office for further questioning. The suspect, Henry Kaggwa (36), appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Friday. On Monday, he appeared again and his case was struck from the roll after he paid an admission-of-guilt fine.

The amount could not be confirmed at the time of our going to press.

Two other suspects also appeared on court on Monday on two separate counts of the illegal possession of drugs. Azwitakadzi Mavhungu (30) paid a R200 admission-of-guilt fine, after which he was released. Thomas Mudalahothze (38) pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one month imprisonment or a R500 fine.

At the time of our going to press, the newspaper had lodged an enquiry with the Makhado Police to verify this information and to get comment on the fact that the suspects were allowed to make a deal in court, when the drugs found in their possession were worth more than the fine they had to pay.

An answer was still forthcoming.

Vir die Naudé- en Venter-gesin van Louis Trichardt is die woord “dankie” te klein om hulle diepe dankbaarheid te verwoord en ‘n gemeenskap te bedank wat hulle in woord en daad ondersteun in hulle tyd van nood.

Sakkie en Cornette Naudé en hulle twee dogtertjies se huis, op die hoek van die Elim-verkeersirkel en die Ledig-afdraaipad, is in puin gelê tydens ‘n brand.

Ten spyte van die hulp wat van orals opgedaag het om die vernie­ tigende vlamme te probeer blus, kon daar amper niks van die jong gesin se huisraad gered word nie.

Cornette, wat voor Sakkie op die toneel opgedaag het, moes hulpeloos toekyk hoe al hulle besittings uitbrand.

Cornette en Sakkie het ‘n rukkie gelede in dié grasdakhuis ingetrek, terwyl Cornette se ouers, Hendrik en Martie Venter, hulle bure geword het in die huis skuins agter hulle op die eiendom.

Cornette was Maandag nog merkbaar ontsteld tydens die koe­ rant se besoek. “Soveel mense het ons al kom vertroos ... baie van hulle sê dit is net aardse goed ... maar tog is daar sekere dinge wat mens net nie kan vervang nie,” het Cornette gesê.

Sy was nog verlede Vrydag – toe die brand uitgebreek het – by die werk. Die oproep wat sy ontvang het, was dat sy gou moes kom help want haar ma-hulle se huis was besig om af te brand.

“Ek het nog huis toe gejaag en mense saamgevat om te gaan help ... min het ek geweet dat ek hulp bring om my eie huis te help red,” het Cornette gesê.

Die oorsaak van die brand is nog nie duidelik nie. Cornette vertel pa Hendrik was by sy huis toe haar bediende benoud daar

opgedaag het. Die bediende was histeries en het gegil dat daar rook uit die dak trek.

Hendrik het als gelos en oorgehardloop om te gaan ondersoek instel. Dit was teen ongeveer 13:00. In hierdie kort tydjie het die dak van die huis reeds in ligte laaie gestaan. Hendrik, wat alleen was, het probeer om die vlamme te blus met water wat hy uit die visdam geskep het, terwyl hy terselfdertyd probeer het om hulp te ontbied.

Cornette sê hulle was ontsteld toe die plaaslike brandweer eers heelwat later daar opgedaag het, en toe ook nie water gehad het nie. Teen dié tyd het die hele huis aan die brand gestaan, en het die vlamme versprei na die aangrensende geboue van die kwekery langsaan.

Gelukkig, sê Cornette, was die plaas- en dorpswag vinnig op die toneel en het hulle daadwerklik ingespring om te help die brand onder beheer te kry.

Johan Rootman en sy vrou, Miemie, was van die eerste mense wat opgedaag en dadelik probeer het om die vlamme te blus. Miemie het kopgehou en Cornette-hulle se hondjies gered van ‘n gewisse vlammedood.

Ongelukkig kon daar nie veel van die huisraad gered word nie. ‘n Sterk oostelike wind het die vlamme opgeskep en versprei na die aangrensende huis van Cornette-hulle se swaer, Martin Naudé. Hulle het ook ‘n paar benoude oomblikke beleef toe die veld agter hulle huis aan die brand geraak het en die vlamme so versprei het na hulle tuin en palmbome, en hulle huis se dak amper ook aan die brand geraak het.

Teen hierdie tyd het verster­ kings van orals gekom, en het almal wat ‘n waterkarretjie gehad het kom help om die vlamme onder beheer te kry.

Dit is hierdie oorweldigende bystand, sê Cornette, wat hulle gesin steeds deur dié krisis dra.

Die gemeenskap se harte het vir die gesin oopgegaan. Daar was mense wat kos, klere en huisraad aangedra het en ander wat kon­ tantbydraes gemaak het. “Daar is nie genoeg woorde om dankie te sê vir almal nie ... dankie is net ‘n te klein woord,” het Cornette gesê, terwyl sy beduie na ‘n kartonboksie waarin sy die lysies van almal se name veilig bewaar.

Tussen die lysies lê die verbrande doopbandjie van haar meisiekind wat Cornette in die as opgetel het in die huis.

Intussen woon Cornette, Sakkie en hulle dogters by Martie en Hendrik, tot tyd en wyl hulle weer op hulle eie bene kan staan.

“Ons gesin is opreg dankbaar vir al die hulp wat ons ontvang het en nog steeds ontvang. Daar was my pa, Johan en Miemie Rootman, die engel-tannie wat donasies op Facebook ingesamel het ... daar is net te veel mense om almal by die naam te noem ... ons kan nie genoeg dankie sê nie,” het Cornette gesê.

Die Makhado Brandweer het ook bevestig dat hulle Vrydag hulle hande vol gehad het.

Vrydag se buitengewone hoë brandgevaarindeks oor die streek het gesorg dat daar altesaam 10 gevalle was waaraan die stasie moes aandag gee.

Buiten vir die Naudé’s se nood was daar ook ‘n brand wat ontstaan het by die munisipale stortingsterrein wat versprei het tot agter die Kuthama-Sinthumule Gevangenis. Die ander groot brand wat Vrydag ontstaan het, was in die Roodewalplantasie, oos van Louis Trichardt. Hierdie brand het net so vinnig versprei, verby die kruis tot in die plantasie langs die N1-noord.

(Contd from P1) “This is a very bad township, known for its hostility towards the anti-poaching unit. A lot of the headmen were poachers themselves,” said Sean.

Sean made his way to the point of arrest, but it was slow going. Roads in the area are treacherous and heavy rains the previous evening made driving even worse. Eventually Sean met up with his extended patrol. Meeting him was teammate Johan du Plessis (28), their Mozambican ranger Filizardo and an armed Mozambican government official.

Along the way, Sean picked up another three armed Mozambican government officials for assistance.

Now they had to make their way back to the police station, but to do this, they had to drive through the town of Corruman once more. Apart from the resentment residents of the town have towards members of the anti-poaching unit, there was also already a bad atmosphere in the town because of the damage residents had suffered during the previous evening’s rainstorm. “Because the roads are bad, we had to try different routes to get to the police station. I had a 4x4, but the poacher’s vehicle [being driven by the government officials] was a 2x4. That was a bit of a problem … At this stage, the poacher was on the other vehicle, not on my vehicle, and he managed to escape from that vehicle,” said Sean.

Seeing that the man had jumped from the bakkie, Sean parked his bakkie and asked two government officials to look after it. He then proceeded to chase down the fleeing suspect through the shacks and narrow alleyways in the town.

Sean managed to chase down the suspect, re-arrest him and hand him back to the government officials. “We were walking back to our vehicles to climb in and get going again. That was where the mob kind of started up. They’d seen us driving in there and they’d seen we’d arrested a poacher. A few warning shots were fired when the guy escaped, so that made matters worse and worked everyone up,” said Sean.

The angry mob started making their way to Sean and his team. “I called my team in and told them to just stay together and move towards the vehicles,” said Sean. At that stage, they were about 40 metres away from their vehicles. “While they were coming towards us, the Mozambican officials became very nervous and started to retreat, so we retreated with them,” said Sean.

Suddenly, stones and bottles were hurled at Sean and his team. “The team and I started running towards the military base inside the town,” said Sean. The safety of the base was, however, two-and-a-half to three kilometres away. “I often told them ‘Stop, stay together, we can fight our way through this!’ But they [government officials] just carried on heading for the military base,” said Sean. Realizing the desperate situation facing them, Sean radioed their base for support, asking them to send a helicopter to come and pick them up. The helicopter is stationed at their base.

Sean, Johan and Filizaro got separated from the four government officials. “They were more concerned with us anti-poaching guys than with the government officials … As me moved, the mob got bigger and bigger. Because we were now in a township, every direction we went in, more and more people joined the mob, blocking us in every direction,” said Sean. By that time, realizing the impending danger and in an effort to try and defuse the situation, the government officials had already let the poacher go. This, however, did not change Sean’s predicament.

While running towards the safety of the military base, Sean and his team faced another dilemma.

“As we were running, we were moving into more built-up areas. The chopper can’t get to you and the mob is getting bigger … Eventually Johan and I, along with the ranger, decided that we must now face what was coming, because they were going to get us,” said Sean. Part of their decision to stop was also to remain in an area where the chopper could get to them. They were still about a kilometre away from the military base. Luckily for them, Sean’s base confirmed that the chopper was already in the air and on its way to them “We just had to stay alive until the chopper got to us,” said Sean.

The mob was on them in a flash. “From there, it was just a full-on fight. I was hit over the head with something like a machete … I don’t really know.

I was also stabbed in the back of my neck with a broken bottle,” said Sean. Several rocks also hit his face and he was severely whipped across his back. One attacker tried to stab him with a knife in his ribcage, but fortunately Sean managed to ward off this potentially fatal wound by blocking the

knife with his elbow. “Johan also got a big gash to the forehead … they worked a lot on his body and his legs. He got a fractured rib and lots of other bruises … Every time we got knocked down, we would try and stand up. But when you would get to your knees, they would knock you down again.

All they wanted us to do was to lie down … either to whip us or kills us … I don’t know. We just kept on trying to stand and defend ourselves as much as we could,” said Sean. He added that the only thing going through his mind at that stage was to stay alive until the chopper came. “I knew that we could die, but I also knew the chopper was coming … there was lots of blood, but I just told myself ‘the chopper is coming, the chopper is coming!’” said Sean.

Suddenly Sean was hit against the head. “I think it was a rock … I went down, the lights went out and sound went out. As it was going out, it started coming back again, and as it came back I heard the chopper,” said Sean.

By then the whole town of Corruman was up in arms, with some residents even protesting outside the military base where the four Mozambican officials had found refuge. It was virtually impossible for the chopper to land. “As I heard the chopper, the mob just kind of took two or three steps back and left us. When they left us, another individual in civilian clothes appeared and came and stood next to me with an AK47. He just said ‘It’s okay. I am police.’ But the mob still wanted to come. Now and then a stone would come, hitting us,” said Sean.

Realizing that the chopper pilot did not know were he was, Sean reached for his radio. By that time the radio’s adjustment knobs were missing and the screen broken. “I just pushed in the receiver and shouted to the chopper to turn around. Somehow, they heard me over the radio and they turned around,” said Sean. He then guided the chopper to where they lay, severely injured.

As the chopper landed, Sean and Johan were still able to board it on their own steam. There was only space for two. “As the pilot took off, I told him that Filizaro was still down there,” said Sean. The pilot dropped off Sean and Johan a few kilometres away from the rowdy mob and returned to rescue Filizaro. He had also sustained severe cuts and bruises, as well as a broken wrist.

The three injured team mates were taken to the MediClinic in Nelspruit. Sean spent two days in the ICU and another two days in a general ward. He returned to his Louis Trichardt home last Thursday to recover.

Sean has no doubt that they would have been killed if the chopper had not arrived in time. Yet, he is already making plans to go back to Mozambique. “I have another scan in a month, and if I am all clear, I am definitely going back. Not one of us guys who work there feels sorry for himself. We are there because we want to be there. We enjoy what are are doing because we know we are making a difference. It’s not everybody who is willing to go work on the Mozambiquan side, so we know it’s where we can make a difference. We’re a nice young team that works there. We’ve accomplished so much in a very short time, with a lot of help from donors. We are going back. The job is not done. There are more animals to save,” said Sean.

Hierdie jaar het die kompetisie ook deelnemers se breinkrag getoets. Daar was byvoorbeeld ‘n item wat elke deelnemer self sy/haar gewigte moes balanseer aan twee kante van ‘n paal en dit dan oor ‘n afstand dra.

“Buiten dat dit vir ons ‘n groot eer en genade is om te wen,” het Lee gesê, “was dit ook lekker om te sien dat ons gimnasium goed

vergelyk met die groter gimnasiums in die land.”

Felix en Lee, beide CrossFit-instrukteurs, bestuur die OpenDoors Gimnasium op Louis Trichardt sedert 2014. Die egpaar se dogters volg ook in hulle voetspore.

Danika (16), wat ook ‘n Graad 10-leerling van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt is, het deelgeneem aan die vroue beginnerskategorie teen 140 ander deelnemers. Sy het deurgedring na die finale rondte en behaal ‘n algehele vyf­de plek.

Daar mag dalk gesing word van Jan, die Bielie van die Bosveld, maar plaaslik is die Malans die Bielies van Louis Trichardt.

Felix Malan, vroulief Lee en hul oudste dogter, Danika, het vanaf 23 tot 25 September deelgeneem aan die Last Man Standing CrossFit-kompetisie, waar hulle behoorlik die pryse ingeoes het.

Dit was net kleinsus Ziamay wat nie deelgeneem het nie, maar net omdat sy nog te jonk is om te mag inskryf vir die kompetisie.

Altesaam 800 ander atlete het aan die kompetisie deelgeneem. Daar Danika Malan in aksie tydens die Last Man Standing CrossFit-kompetisie. Foto verskaf deur Last was selfs atlete vanaf Namibië.

Vir Felix was dit nie die eer­ ste keer dat hy aan die kompetisie deelgeneem het nie. Hy het verlede jaar ook in die intermediêre meesterskategorie meegeding en ‘n algehele derde plek ingepalm.

Hierdie jaar het Felix algeheel eerste in sy kategorie geëindig. ‘n Verdere hoogtepunt, vertel Lee, was toe Garth Collins (voorheen bekend as die MTN Gladiator Granite) vir Felix kom aanmoedig het tydens sy finale rondte.

Lee self het ook goed presteer, veral as mens in ag neem dat dit die eerste jaar is wat sy aan dié kompetisie deelgeneem het. In haar kategorie vir intermediêre meestersvroue het Lee ‘n algehele tweede plek ingepalm. Die item wat haar ‘n voorsprong bo die ander deelnemers gegee het, vertel Die Malan bielies van Louis Trichardt. Links en regs van pa Felix, is ma Lee en Danika.

Lee, was in die laaste rondte van die kompetisie toe hulle etlike meters tou moes klim. Heelwat deelnemers het hier punte verloor, omdat hulle nie die tegniek onder die knie gehad het nie.

“Gelukkig vir my is touklim een van die dinge wat ek die kinders hier in ons begginersklas leer,” het Lee gesê.

Oor die twee dae word die kompetisie beslis met taai oefenprogramme wat vooraf uitgewerk word. Elke program het ‘n verskillende roetines wat die deelnemers moet voltooi, soos burpees, crunches en box jumps, Felix Malan besig om korte mette te maak in die toutrek-afdeling. om maar ‘n paar te noem. Hoërskool Louis Trichardt het Maandag jaartoekennings oorhandig vir leerlinge wat uitgeblink het gedurende 2016. Hierdie leerlinge het almal hul eerste balkie ontvang, omdat hulle drie jaar lank in diens gestaan het van die skool as deel van die Guardian Angels Omgeegroep.

They have a theory, though, that hawk moths could be the true pollinator, or a combination of the moths and bats together.

By using citizen science methods, the Baobab Blitz project will turn ordinary citizens into research assistants to uncover the truth.

Die “Kodak tannie” is steeds sonder ‘n naam

Die soektog na die misterieuse “oumatjie” wie se foto uit ‘n Kodak No2 Brownie van 1929 “gered” is, het nog niks opgelewer nie.

Die storie oor die film wat uit die ou kamera gehaal is en die foto’s, het landwyd opslae gemaak. Daar is tot op die SAUK radiostasie, RSG, daaroor berig.

Die storie oor die foto-vonds het sy oorsprong in die kamera-museum van die Zoutpansberger.

Hierdie museum is ‘n paar jaar gelede begin, aanvanklik net om ‘n uitstalruimte te bied vir die ou kameras wat vroeër jare gebruik is in die nuusinsamelingsproses. Soos wat die tyd aanstap, het meer en meer mense egter hul ou kameras geskenk aan die museum. Die koerant het ook selektief ou kameras begin aankoop as dit teen ‘n billike prys aangebied is.

So ongeveer drie maande gelede is ‘n Kodak No 2 Brownie op die webtuiste Bidorbuy geadverteer.

Dit het dadelik die belangstelling geprikkel. Wat die kamera besonders gemaak het, was die donkerrooi kleur van die leer. Die No 2 Brownie is in 1924 bekendgestel deur Kodak, maar is eers in 1929 te koop aangebied. In die eerste jaar van produksie is meer as 100 000 van die kameras verkoop.

Toe die kamera arriveer, was dit duidelik dat die kamera ongelooflik goed opgepas is en bykans Hooffoto: Die foto van die “oumatjie” in die tuin. geen tekens toon van 87 jaar se diens nie. Die rooi Brownie het dan ook sy (of haar) plek gevind in die uitstalkaste saam met ongeveer 80 ander antieke kameras. (Die oudste kamera in die versameling is ‘n Kodak Cartridge No 4, wat dateer uit 1897.)

Vroeg in September het die Zoutpansberger aangekondig dat die koerant se jaarlikse kalender-kompetisie vanjaar bietjie anders gaan verloop.

In die verlede is lesers uitgenooi om hul beste foto’s vir die kompetisie in te skryf. Die 12 wenfoto’s word dan ingesluit in die volgende jaar se kalender, wat vir promosiedoeleindes gebruik word. Die kompetisie het reeds vir baie opwinding (en teleurstellings) gesorg, maar definitief die belangstelling geprikkel. Die Zoutpansberger se nuusredakteur, Andries van Zyl, was gretig om deel te neem, maar wou graag eksperimenteer met ‘n 120-formaat Box Brownie. Die aangewese kandidaat was die rooi No 2 Brownie. Toe hy egter film wou insit, merk hy op dat daar reeds film in die kamera is. Daar is toe voorgestel dat die koerant moes probeer om die ou film te ontwikkel.

Die film wat uit die kamera gehaal is, is ‘n Ilford Sellochrome, ‘n swart-en-wit film wat in die vroeë 1930s op die mark was. ‘n Soektog op die Internet oor wat die mees geskikte proses is om só ‘n film te ontwikkel, het nie baie opgelewer nie en dit was duidelik dat dit maar ‘n groot kans was om te vat. Dit was ook baie waarskynlik dat die kamera oopgemaak is gedurende die afgelope 70 of 80 jaar, wat natuurlik sou beteken dat die film belig is en alle foto’s uitgewis is.

Die film is in die ontwikkelingstenk gesit en eers vir omtrent ‘n halfuur in water laat staan om die emulsie bietjie sagter te maak. Hierna is dit vir meer as ‘n halfuur in filmontwikkelaar gelos.

Tot almal se verbasing het daar nog drie raampies uitgekom, waarvan een was van die ou tannie wat in die tuin poseer.

Die vraag wat soveel mense gevra het, was of die tannie se familie opgespoor kon word. Dit is uiters moeilik, aangesien die persoon van wie die kamera aangekoop is, nie rekords gehou het van waar hy die kamera gekry het nie. Dit is ‘n besigheid in Pretoria wat spesialiseer in tweedehandse produkte, maar volgens die eienaar het hy die kamera al ‘n klompie jare. Nadat die berig die eerste keer in die Zoutpansberger verskyn het, is dit al deur meer as 3 100 mense op Facebook gelees. Lesers het ook geskryf en gevra dat die ander foto’s op die film, al is dit nie duidelik nie, gepubliseer moet word. Dit kan dalk help om die tannie te identifiseer.

As enige iemand die foto herken of selfs so ‘n rooi Box Brownie onthou, laat ons gerus weet.

13 REMEMBRANCE DAY

On Sunday, 13 November, the South African National Defence Force, military veterans and civilians will spend two minutes remembering those who had made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country as part of Remembrance Day. At 05:00 on Monday, 11 November, 1918, a document was signed that brought an end to the First World War. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, the guns fell silent. The war that was supposed to end all wars had come to an end, but not before an estimated nine million people had lost their lives.

To pay homage those who died in the war and subsequent wars, Remembrance Day is commemorated annually.

The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTHs) of Louis Trichardt will be holding their annual Remembrance Day parade and wreath-laying ceremony on 13 November at 10:30 for 11:00 at their Turbi Hills Shell hole at 66 Burger Street.

Volkswagen South Africa launched their new Tiguan nationally on Saturday, 8 October.

Locally, Volkswagen lovers had the opportunity to test drive two of the three models released at Thompson’s Motors as part of Tiguan Take Off Day. “The interest in the new Tiguan was insane,” remarked Thompson’s Motors sales manager Stanley Thompson. The two 6-speed petrol models that could be test driven were the 1.4 litre 92kW TSI and the 1.4 litre 110 kW TSI, whose engine was voted World Engine of the Year. The third model released, but not available on Saturday, was the 2 litre 162 kW 7-speed Tiguan. “We’ve already sold both demo models on display and are currently awaiting our order. February will also see the release of three diesel models,” said Thompson, pictured here with the new Tiguan fitted out with the Rline package.

Two in court for Eltivillas robbery Court News

Two suspects who tried to flee from the Makhado police were apprehended before they could get far.

On Saturday, 1 October, early in the morning, police were notified about a robbery in progress at the Eltivillas Primary School.

When the police arrived at the scene, they spotted two men jumping over the fence of the school, running away from them.

The two men, Tshepo Mathega (22) and Elias Mabotja (22), were arrested and taken to the police station where they were charged with business robbery.

Both the men appeared briefly

in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Monday, 3 October.

Their case was postponed until 10 October to afford the police time to conclude their investigation. They will remain in custody until then. Following the arrest, the police also seized two laptops, a flashlight and a jacket to the estimated value of R15 0000.

Werda Toyota in Louis Trichardt het verlede Woensdag tien lemoenbome gevestig in die munisipale park in Rissikstraat (tussen Krogh- en Munnikstraat), met die toestemming van die Makhado Munisipaliteit. Charl Venter (werkswinkelbestuurder) het verduidelik dat dit deel is van Werda se omgewingsprojek. Elke jaar pak die onderneming een projek aan om terug te ploeg in die gemeenskap en die omgewing. Hulle het besluit op lemoenbome, nie net omdat dit die park sal verfraai en suurstof sal verskaf nie, maar ook sodat die hele gemeenskap eendag die vrugte kan benut. I changed some of the contents to fit our circumstances in South Africa.

God has all the rights of the universe. This is part of His glory that we are commanded to declare to white and black and brown and all the nations of South Africa. To mention a few: 1. God has the right to forgive sins (Matthew 9:6).

2. God has the right to take His life back from the grave (John 10:18).

3. God has the right to execute judgement (John 5:27).

4. God has the right to give eternal life (John 17:2).

5. God has the right to cast into hell (Luke 12:5).

6. God has the right to create any kind of person (Romans 9:21).

7. God has the right to control plagues (Revelation 16:9).

8. Every right in the universe has been given to Jesus (Matthew 28:18).

Rights are rooted in being. Humans are created in the image of God. We therefore possess a dignity of being that animals and plants do not have.

In Genesis 9:6 we read: “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man.”

God therefore has absolute rights, because He has absolute being. As the source and origin of all personal being, He has all rights that persons have who are created in His image. If beings beneath God have rights because they are nearer to God in their being, then God has infinitely greater rights than all human persons.

So why are we not outraged that God’s rights are not acknowledged in South Africa? Why do cities burn over the denial of a man’s rights, but not over the denial of God’s rights? Not that cities should burn to show God’s rights. That is not the way of Jesus. We establish God’s rights by the Word, not the sword or torch - read John 18:36.

“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1). So everything that exists is God’s property. It exists for His purposes. People take houses and cars and businesses and schools and newspapers and TV stations and use them without any consultation with the Owner at all. They deny His ownership and act against His stated purposes for these things. His rights are violated every day.

Where is the outrage?

The root of all injustice is the pervasive human injustice against God. Where the rights of our Creator and Saviour are daily denied, we should not be surprised that the rights of persons created in His image are denied in a selfish way. Until God is given His rights, no human rights will have much significance beyond convenience, and when they are no longer convenient, they will be ignored, whether by violent police, traffic violators, looters, or murderers. The end of Godlessness is anarchy..

Easy win for Limpopo Dairy in 8-a-side cricket league final Cricket News

The excitement continues in the various cricket leagues taking place in Louis Trichardt and the past week saw victories for the Vikings, the Strikers and finally for Limpopo Dairy in the final of the 8-a-side competition.

On Friday, 7 October, the Vikings came up against Eltivillas. Vikings set a reasonable cumulative score of 69, thanks mainly to good contributions by Craig Viljoen and Morné Olwage (31) and thereafter by Jaco Botha and Koekies (29). Eltivillas started off badly, but Irfan and Imran then took the cumulative score to 41 runs as third pair, to keep their hopes alive. The final pair could not, however, reach the target and ended five runs short, on 64.

In the match between Air Force Base (AFB) and Strikers, Strikers batted first and set a target of 121 runs. AFB started off chasing this target with reasonable ease, but at the end wickets fell and some tight bowling kept the runs down. The final cumulative total of AFB was 99 runs.

The final of the night league took place on Saturday and was contested between Vikings and Limpopo Diary. Vikings batted first and ended with a cumulative score of 87. Morné Olwage and Craig Viljoen

once again did most of the damage with the bat. Limpopo Dairy had no trouble chasing this target and eventually ended with a cumulative score of 151. Leon and Gerrie put up 42 runs as the first pair, which set a good foundation. AJ Fourie and Gerhardus batted well at the end, taking the score to 151.

Three matches also took place the past weekend in the 20-over league. On Saturday, Louis Trichardt A came up against Univen at the Cloud’s End field.

LTT A batted first and, thanks to Chrisjan Hendricks (41), got off to a good start.

The wickets kept on falling and only Jaco Botha (11) could manage double figures.

The last wicket fell with the score on 107.

Univen’s best bowlers were Luvhoni Mhlambo (4/23), Tumelo Soshange (2/26) and Tanim Kondukane (2/13).

Univen’s batting scorecard looks like an advert for a poultry farm, with the first five batsmen all scoring ducks. Seromo (15) was the only batsman who could manage double figures. The last wicket fell with the score on 57. Morné Olwage was devastating with the ball, taking 4/14.

Riaan and Chrisjan Hendricks also too two wickets each.

On Sunday, LTT A came up against Giyani and this time their batsmen held

nothing back. The home team batted first and Chrisjan Hendricks scored a lightning-fast 90 runs to get the scoreboard moving. Leon Olwage (24), Yahya Giwa (14), AJ Fourie (11) and Imran Bhatia helped to take the score to 197. Marceli was Giyani’s most successful bowler, taking 3/18.

Giyani’s batting innings started off Kobus Barkhuizen (right) in action during one of the weekend’s matches. fairly well, with Akil (36), Tas (12) and Malimu (18) making contributions.

Wickets then started falling and the required rate crept up. Marceli (40 not out) and Matumba (19 not out) tried to pull it through, but could only take the total to 142. Leon Olwage (3/21) and Chrisjan Hendricks (2/28) were LTT A’s most successful bowlers. On Saturday, Univen also played against Louis Trichardt B. LTT B batted first and, thanks to good contributions by Nasir (24), Khaif (28), Muraf (24) and Aslam (30), put up a total of 150. Only Tumelo (2/32) could take two or more wickets for Univen.

Univen’s batsmen battled to keep up with the required rate and lost early wickets, which made things even worse. Triegies skitter by Spur XCO-finaal (Vervolg van p. 18) Triegie-spanmaat Karla van Zyl, wat hierdie jaar begin fietsry het, het ook baie goed gery en die wedren in die 18de plek in ‘n tyd van 00:44:18 uit 28 deelnemers voltooi.

Die sub-juniorafdeling het die meeste Triegie-deelnemers gelok, wat goeie nuus is vir die toekoms van die sport by die skool. In die seuns-afdeling het Triegies se De Wet du Toit en Rohan Cronjé die strawwe en vinnige baan aangedurf oor twee rondtes. De Wet het algeheel 37ste klaargemaak in ‘n tyd van 00:54:13, met Rohan kort op sy hakke in 00:54:14 in die 38ste plek uit 68 deelnemers. In die meisiesafdeling van dié ouderdomsgroep was Jennavieve die eerste Triegie oor die wenstreep in ‘n tyd van 00:45:48 in die 24ste plek uit 32 deelnemers. Triegies se Dominique Nel het ‘n paar minute later in die 26ste posisie in 00:48:41 geëindig.

Ná ‘n nag se rus was al die Triegie-ryers Sondag vroeg weer op die baan vir deelname aan die interprovinsiale kompetisie.

Alhoewel die hele Triegie-span weer gery het, was dit Mar-

no, Richard, Turner, Christelle, Joleen en Dominique wat die oggend hul provinsiale truie oor die kop getrek het om hul provinsie te verteenwoordig.

Ten spyte van die vorige dag se terugslag met sy papwiel, het Marno vol vertroue weggespring in die junior-mansafdeling saam met spanmaat James. Anders as die vorige dag se vier rondtes, het hulle Sondag slegs drie rondtes gery. Marno moes hard werk om by die voorlopers te probeer bly.

Hy het algeheel 37ste uit die veld van 78 provinsiale ryers geëindig in ‘n tyd van 00:45:57, sowat ses minute ná die algehele wenner van die wedren. Dit was ‘n harde trap vir James, wat slegs een van sy drie rondtes voltooi het, in die 69ste plek. In die meisiesafdeling van die ouderdomgroep het Joleen in die 23ste posisie uit 27 deelnemers klaargemaak, in ‘n tyd van 00:47:25.

In die O/16 Youth-mansafdeling het Richard vir ‘n tweede agtereenvolgende dag ‘n algehele 10de plek uit 73 ryers ingepalm in ‘n tyd van 00:28:19 oor twee rondtes, net meer as ‘n minuut ná die eerste plekwenners. Heine het vir homself ‘n 47ste plek losget-

rap in ‘n tyd van 00:31:42, met Turner kort op sy hakke in die 49ste plek in 00:31:45.

In die O/15 Youth-meisiesafdeling het Triegies se Christelle dit ook twee in ‘n ry gemaak, nadat sy ook algeheel vierde geëindig het in die provinsiale kompetisie. Sy het haar twee rondtes in ‘n tyd van 00:33:55 voltooi. Karla het ook ‘n goeie wedren gery en ‘n algehele 17de plek ingepalm in ‘n tyd van 00:39:36.

Wat die sub junior-mansafdeling betref, het De Wet op die tweede dag vir hom ‘n 36ste plek losgetrap uit 61 deelnemers in ‘n tyd van 00:33:29, met Rohan wat 42ste geëindig het in 00:33:53.

Jennavieve het op haar beurt ‘n algehele 20ste plek verower in die meisiesafdeling met ‘n algehele tyd van 00:41:50 uit 28 deelnemers. Dominique het algeheel 24ste klaargemaak in 00:45:44.

Limpopo het algeheel sesde geëindig uit die 10 provinsies wat deelgeneem het, ingesluit spanne van Zimbabwe en Namibië. Die eerste, tweede en derde plek het onderskeidelik gegaan aan Noordwes, Gauteng en die Weskaap.

Triegies skitter te midde van strawwe kompetisie Deur Andries van Zyl

Die jaarlikse hoërskole Spur XCO-bergfietsliga het die afgelope naweek op ‘n hoogtepunt geëindig, met skole wat van regoor die land by Hoërskool Bekker in die Magaliesberge versamel het vir die finaal.

Hoërskool Louis Trichardt was ook daar om hul eer te verdedig, nadat hulle as topskool in die provinsie uit die stryd getree het. Kompetisie was egter straf, met die Triegie-ryers wat teen ryers van topskole soos Potchefstroom Gimnasium, Grey College, Affies en Moreletapark te staan gekom het.

Die finaal van die Spur XCO-liga is oor twee dae (8 en 9 Oktober) beslis. Die eerste dag het die skoolspanne teen mekaar te staan gekom om

‘n algehele wenskool vir die liga te bepaal. Die tweede dag het die provinsiale spanne mekaar die stryd aangesê om die top provinsie te bepaal.

Triegies se 12-man span wat die Saterdag die skool verteenwoordig het, het bestaan uit Marno van Zyl, Ricard Lambert, Turner de Swardt, Joleen de Swardt, Christelle Coetzer, Dominique Nel, Heine de Jager, James Raper, Rohan Cronjé, De Wet du Toit, Karla van Zyl en Jennavieve Truter.

In die junior mansafdeling tydens die skolekompetisie Saterdag, was dit deja vu vir Limpopo se nommer een ryer, Triegies se Marno van Zyl. Soos met die laaste rondte van die provinsiale liga, die Tour de Lip, knip ‘n pap wiel binne die eerste paar minute van die wedren sy kanse vir ‘n goeie posisie kort. Triegie-spanmaat James Raper voltooi ook drie van die vier rondtes. In die junior vroue-afdeling is Joleen de Swardt die enigste Triegie-ryer en voltooi haar drie rondtes in ‘n tyd van 01:16:03.

In die O/16 Youth-mansafdeling het Richard Lambert (Limpopo nommer 1), Turner de Swardt en Heine de Jager die Triegies verteenwoordig.

Richard was weer in vorm en het van al die Trie-

gie-seuns die beste gevaar die dag. Hy het ‘n algehele 10de plek uit 80 ryers ingepalm, in ‘n tyd van 00:45:26 oor drie rondtes. Om vir lesers ‘n idee te gee van hoe kompeterend dié liga is, het net twee minute vir Richard geskei van die wenner. Turner het ook goed gery en sy drie rondtes in die 52ste posisie in ‘n tyd van 00:50:42 voltooi. Heine het oor die wenstreep gery in die 59ste posisie in ‘n tyd van 00:52:14.

Nog ‘n Triegie wat beïndruk het, was Limpopo se nommer een ryer in die O/15 Youth-meisiesafdeling, Christelle Coetser. Sy het ‘n algehele vierde plek in dié afdeling in ‘n tyd van 00:35:45 oor twee rondtes behaal, minder as twee minute ná die algehele wenner.
