Bleak future for grieving family

By Elmon Tshikhudo The Netswera family of Tswera suffered a double blow, when a raging fire killed their son and destroyed their property. According to the police, it is alleged that the fire was caused by a burning candle.

Besides having to cope with the loss of a loved one and injuries to other family members, the poor family of seven has to contend with extreme conditions of poverty. They now have nowhere to sleep and their belongings, including their clothing, were destroyed in the fire.

The family has to start from scratch and it seems it is going to be an uphill struggle, as no one is working in the family.

Mulweli Netswera (5), a Grade R learner at the local primary school, was killed in the fire. His granny, Muofhe Netswera (79), was seriously burnt during an attempt to save the life of Mulweli.

Mulweli’s other brother, Orifha (11), was burnt in the face. He was treated at the local hospital and dis-

charged.

During Mirror’s visit, a few relatives and neighbours were comforting the children.

The children’s mother was still in hospital, recuperating from severe burns incurred during the fire.“As a family, we are greatly saddened by what happened. We are trying to pick up the pieces, so that life can continue, but life is a real struggle here,” said Mr Phineas Nyelisani, an uncle who stays not far from the family. Nyelisani said if it were not for the poverty that had engulfed the family, the tragedy could have been averted. “The family is very poor and they only make ends meet through grants, which are not even not enough for their basic needs.”

According to him, they did not have electricity and were forced to use candles, which led to the tragedy. He said what further grieved the family was that they did not have shelter as the other huts could collapse at any given time.

“Soapy case” against Mthembi continues Hardworking policeman passes away "He is the devil’s child! He called me a skelm!"

These were some of the allegations that the controversial Doris Mthembi’s (39) lawyer made during her ongoing court case.

She appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday to stand trial in one of the numerous cases that keep on piling up against her.

The case relates to an incident in September last year when she tried to open a case of rape against her estranged husband, Goddard Tendani Mugwena. Mthembi claimed that her ex-husband had burnt her car and had her mother-in-law killed before kidnapping and raping her (Mthembi).

During Wednesday’s proceedings, a smartly dressed Mthembi listened while the investigating officer, Capt Fanie Mynhardt of the police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, testified about the day she tried to lay the charge against Mugwena.

Mthembi’s lawyer accused Mynhardt of being selective in his investigation into the alleged rape.

“I was puzzled and amazed by your investigation methods,” said the lawyer. According to the lawyer, Mynhardt wasn’t even interested in what Mthembi had to say about the case and relied solely on what Mugwena had to say.

Mynhardt denied this and testified that Mthembi wanted to go home to rest after she was released from the hospital and thereafter refused to answer any follow-up calls from him. It was at this stage, said Mynhardt, that Mthembi started to send out letters of complaint to various statutory bodies to complain about his alleged misconduct.

“Doris will testify that you called her a skelm, refused to help her and [she] therefore felt the need to send the letters,” said the lawyer.

Time ran out, however, for any further cross-examination and Mthembi’s case had to be postponed.

She will appear in court again on 14 October.

"It is hard to believe that a hardworking police officer who was always committed to his work is no more. " This was the remark by the station commander of the Mphephu Police Station, Col Mashudu Mavhandu. She was commenting on the death of one of her officers, Lt Tshilidzi Daniel Nelwamondo, who passed away a fortnight ago.

Nelwamondo died at the age of 52, after a short illness. This comes after he had served in the police for more than 30 years. At the the time of his death, Nelwamondo was a crime intelligence officer at Mphephu Police Station.

He joined the then Venda National Defence Force in 1981, where he was trained in three categories and became a soldier, a policeman and a traffic officer. Nelwamondo worked for the Provincial Crime Combating Unit for many years.

Apart from being a police officer, Nelwamondo

was once a professional soccer player. He was nominated to play for the former Venda National Team in 1984.

Col Mavhandu said Nelwamondo was an asset to the station and the department.

"We have accepted the loss, but we will always remember him for his good work," said Mavhandu, who expressed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Nelwamondo is survived with his wife and three children. He was laid to rest at Lwamondo outside Thohoyan- Lt Tshilidzi Daniel dou last Friday.

Renowned anthropologist Victor Ralushai passes away The community of Vhembe and the academic world suffered a big loss last week. This follows the death of one of the world's finest scholars, Victor Nkhumeleni Ralushai.

Prof Ralushai (76) of Mbilwi died at Tshilidzini Hospital last Wednesday, after suffering a stroke.

Family spokesperson Mr Dick Ralushai said the death of his uncle came as a double blow to the family, as they buried his sister last weekend.

“As the lastborn in the family, the death of his eldest sister, Tshinakaho Mashamba, must have affected him badly. It is just unfortunate that he died before our tears could dry up,” he said.

He will be buried on Saturday (tomorrow) at Mbaleni and a memorial service was held in his honour on Thursday (yesterday).

Immediately after news of his death became known, tributes started pouring from all corners of the world.

Dick said they had received so many messages from all over, among them the executive mayor of Vhembe, Cllr Florence Dzhombere, and Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale.

Dzhombere visited the family and offered her condolences. Dzhombere said Ralushai's death was not only a loss for the family, but to the district and the whole country. “We have lost a giant in whom we prided academic excellence ourselves as one of our own. He made our district very popular through his research work,” she said.

Prof Ralushai was born at HaRalushai, Mbilwi, on 6 July 1935. He was the lastborn son of Mr Matodzi and Mrs Khangale Nemakhavhani

Ralushai.

He attended at Mphaphuli Memorial School between 1946 and 1952 and Mphaphuli Secondary School between 1953 and 1955, where he obtained his junior certificate. He then proceeded to Pax College in Pietersburg (Polokwane), where he completed matric in 1958.

Victor had a short break when he worked as a clerk at Lukoto Bus Service and at the Sibasa Post Office, but later enrolled for a BA degree at the Pope Pius XII University College, now the National University of Lesotho.

He had to depend on the kindness of relatives and friends for the funding of his studies. The Roman Catholic Church gave him a nominal salary, on condition that he undertook part-time laboratory work at Lady Frere in the Eastern Cape.

Thereafter, Victor returned to Johannesburg for four years. Victor’s academic achievement and potential was recognised in 1971, when he was awarded a King’s College Cambridge University Scholarship to study history. He had developed a keen interest in Social Anthropology and he was transferred to Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he was awarded a PhD scholarship by Queen’s University and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthopology in New York.

Realising that in order to access written accounts of German missionaries of the Vhavenda and Bapedi, Victor spent some time in Taffen, Bavaria, where he mastered German.

In 1977 he completed his PhD studies with the thesis Conflicting Accounts of Venda History with particular ref-

erence to the Role of Mitupo in Social Organization.

Ralushai then took up academic positions at the University of Botswana and Swaziland's Kwaluseni Campus in 1978, and at Jos University in Nigeria in 1979, where many young South African student refugees enjoyed his professional guidance. While in Nigeria, he was struck by a serious bout of malaria. On his recovery, he was advised to return home.

Despite ill health, Prof Ralushai persevered and was eventually appointed vice-principal at the University of Venda in 1986. However, he was forced to take early retirement because of ill health in 1992.

Prof Ralushai attended numerous conferences and delivered academic papers in South African, North America, the United Kingdom and Western Africa.

He was a member of the National Development Agency, the indigenous knowledge systems (South Africa), advisor to the Mapungubwe institute (Mistral) and the Limpopo Heritage Agency. Prof Ralushai’s research formed a key basis for the successful motivation to Unesco to declare Mapungubwe a World Heritage Site.

He has completed a research project funded by the Freedom Park

No bail for three alleged copper thieves Three accused who had been arrested for allegedly stealing copper cables at Waterpoort a week ago, have been denied bail. They appeared in the Waterpoort Periodical Court last Wednesday.

The three, Shalton Ndou (18), Clever Siphuma (30) and Justice Moyo (28), were arrested at the Vlakte Plaats Farm while in possession of copper cables. They are accused of being responsible for cable theft in the area for a number of years. Their arrest came after concerned farmers

collaborated with the police in the fight against cable theft. Cables had been stolen from water pumps on all the affected farms.

When the suspects were eventually apprehended, copper cables to the value of more than R22 000 were found in their possession.

In honour and appreciation of the hard work shown by the farmers in the fight against crime, the Waterpoort police's station commander, Capt Samuel Moshapho, awarded certificates to all the farmers for their contribution.

He expressed his sincere appreciation on behalf of the SAPS to the farmers for their efforts. The awarding of the certificates took place at the Waterpoort police station last Wednesday.

Farmers who received certificates of appreciation included Mr Freddy Johnson, Mr Peet Heyer, Mr Deon Fourie and Mr Brink Schlesinger. Mr Schlesinger assisted with his helicopter during the search for the accused.

The case was postponed to 2 November while the three remain in custody.

Prof Ralushai is survived by his wife, Lucy.

Disabled man gives back to community When he was born 33 years ago, people used to laugh at him as he could not walk properly, but today Chiliboy Rathando is a successful businessman.

His journey began after he realised that he could not wake up every day and simply wait for a disability grant. Chiliboy then decided to form his own closed corporation, Rathando Cleaning

"I could not fold my arms and wait for a disability grant that is not sufficient in any case. I then decided to do something to change my life for the better, and Rathando Cleaning Toilet and Pest Control was born," said Chiliboy. "When I started working, many people thought that I would not succeed because of

my disability." Chiliboy cannot walk properly and although he underwent many operations, they were unsuccessful.

Mukondeni’s home-based carers ready to serve A group of young men and women who were being trained to become home-based care-givers is now ready to serve the community. This comes after 80 young men and women of Mukondeni Village in the Mulima area underwent a year-long training course in home-based care.

The home-based care-givers who successfully completed the course were awarded certificates during a graduation ceremony that was held at a community hall in the village last Friday. The care-

givers are expected to assist members of the community who cannot do things for themselves, free of charge. They were being trained by a non-profit organisation called Ntshuxeko Health Development Organization. The organisation is based in Giyani and deals with HIV/ Aids, training of home-based carers and related issues in the communities.

Ntshuxeko's managing director, Mr Mzamani Xiviti, says that home-based care-giving is a voluntary work and the participants should not expect any

reward. He adds that he expects the care-givers to work for their community with an open heart. "You must commit yourselves in order to reduce the spread of HIV/Aids in your communities," says Xiviti.

He urged members of the community and traditional leaders during the event to support the home-based care-givers in their work. According to Xiviti, his organisation has already trained more than 5 000 home-based carers since its inception in 2001.

Zaka youth plunges to death A 17-year-old Zimbabwean boy plunged to his death at Zaka village outside Beit Bridge when he dived at a squirrel that had appeared on a big rock, but he slipped and rolled down a six-metre mountain slope.

Mike Zvarevashe of Zaka had gone on a hunting expedition in Rwengoma Mountain with his two sisters on Sunday when tragedy struck. He died on the spot from head and facial injuries.

Girls praised for following their culture 101 Years, but not a roof over his head When the cultural books of the Vhavenda nation will be written, the name Livhuwani Ngwana will not be forgotten.

The woman who has founded the Nyavhumbwa Wa Dagaila Cultural Village, a school which promotes and imparts indigenous knowledge and culture especially to the youth, is doing too much to be ignored.

One of the people to give it the nod of approval is Limpopo’s First Lady, Mokgadi Mathale. At a recent women’s workshop at the Rhema Kingdom Life Centre, led by Dr

Tshifhiwa Muligwe, Ngwana was hailed as a champion of culture. Speaking at the event, Mathale hailed Ngwana for being at the forefront of promoting culture.

International preacher and motivator Dr Tshifhiwa Muligwe also hailed the woman, who is teaching young girls morals.

He says the Bible indicates that sex before marriage is bad and so does African culture.

Ngwana said she formed the school after seeing an underage girl fall pregnant in the school where she was a teacher. “I

decided to get in and form the school and registered it as a non-profit organisation.”

She says the school has 250 girls whom she teaches dan­ cing, respect and morality. “I teach the morals and the advantages of being virgins.”

Community members, including members of the church, say Ngwana’s project has positive results in the community.

“Girls who are members of this school become proud of their virginity and are never influenced by peer pressure,” said one local woman.

Government promises new stadium Premier Cassel Mathale has urged officials from the Thulamela Municipality to distribute resources equally in all areas of the municipality.

Mathale had listened to angry community members who complained that resources in some parts of the municipality were better than what they were getting in their own areas. This was during a visit by the Limpopo executive committee, who had visited Vhembe communities at Xikundu outside Malamulele on Friday.

Cabinet members, who included MECs George Phadagi, Namane Masemola, Thabitha Mohlala, Soviet Lekganyane, Rejoyce Mashamba, Dikeledi Magadzi and David Masondo,

listened attentively when community members raised their concerns.

Most of the concerns were about service delivery. The local traditional leader, Chief John Xikundu, complained of the poor service his area was getting from Thulamela Municipality. When it was time to respond, the people of Xikundu were the winners as some of their complaints were responded to on the spot.

“Let us give services to our people responsibly,” Mathale said during the public participation programme at Saselamani Stadium. The community, including their chief, had complained about the poor quality of the stadium and the lack of other services such as water and

electricity in their areas.

Chief John Xikundu, in a hard-hitting complaint to the premier, said the Saselamani stadium was only a stadium in name but it had no grandstands and the grass was not tended.

He said he saw another stadium on the Thohoyandou side and he wondered why an inferior facility was provided to his people in a democracy where people should be treated equally.

Mahosi said the stadium at Xikundu was built in 1998 and “we were on a learning curve.”

She said stadiums which were being built at present were better than those built before. Mathale promised that a new stadium would be built in the place of the present one at Xikundu.

“Traditional music is not inferior” Azwianewi Christopher Ma­ thogo (34) was recently nominated in the Best Male category of the annual South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) 2011 session. The song that earned him a nomination is Zwimangadzo from the album of the same title.

Much to the disappointment of local fans, he didn’t manage to collect the award as it was won by a fellow musician from Johannnesburg.

“I get courage from the fact that I received the nomination,” he says. “There were many entrants and only four of them were selected. It tells me that I am on the right path to have found my name up there with the best three.”

He says that it is only a lear­ ning curve and that he hopes to win the award with his new album, due in December 2011.

Even skeptics can agree with him as he sings with the very authority of style that the Daniel Luambos and Abel Ramufhis of this world did with their guitars and voices in the past decades.

Mathogo’s love for music began as a small boy at Mphireleni village in Ha-Budeli, where

he drummed cans and tins to produce the sounds which fascinated him. When he was in standard one, he initiated and led a village boys’ choir. At that stage, little did he know that by the late ‘90s he would have honed his skills as a musician and that between 2003 and 2007 he would have recorded at least three full-length albums, mainly for airplay on radio stations.

“I sing Tshivenda traditional music and by now you should know that it’s not easy to secure a recording deal with national recording companies,” he states.

“They hardly consider us. The truth is totally naked, you know.

Traditional music proves to be popular with the fans and not with marketing managers in the offices.” He maintains that managers should go out to the people in order to find out what it is that the people want.

“Some old names such as Daniel Luambo, Adziambei Band and Albert Mundalamo are being made available in the music stores, which is good for both the old and young generations,” he says with deep affection. “The same needs to be done with new talent. I am

not trying to say that my music is not in the music stores. My first album, Zwimangadzo, is available in good music stores.”

Mathogo believes that there is a stable future for Tshivenda traditional music, if only the fans continue to believe that this kind of music is not inferior to any other form of music from other parts of the world.

South Africa has put mechanisms in place to deport scores of Zimbabweans who have failed to regularise their stay in the country during the recent documentation exercise.

The Zimbabwean assistant regional immigration manager at Beit Bridge Border Post, Mrs Tamari Shadaya, told Limpopo Mirror that they had since received a memo from their South African counterparts on the latest move.

“According to the document, which we got on Thursday last week, the deportations were to commence with immediate effect,” she said. Shadaya said the deportations targeted undocumented Zimbabweans illegally staying in South Africa and border jumpers, who would have been intercepted while trying to cross the border illegally.

She said they had since notified relevant local stakeholders, including the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) about the imminent deportations.

Shadaya said a meeting involving Zimbabwean and South African immigration officials and other key stakeholders from the two countries would be held soon

in Beit Bridge.

“We are meeting our South African counterparts soon on how the deportations will be implemented. The issues that we will discuss include the anticipated volumes of the deportees and how they will be handled.

“We would like to believe that there will a huge influx of undocumented Zimbabweans coming in through Beit Bridge Border Post and therefore the issue of inadequate personnel to vet the deportees will certainly be another challenge for us,” she said.

Shadaya said on the issue of infrastructure, IOM would temporarily accommodate the deportees at its reception and support centre in the border town, from which they will also be offered food and transport to proceed to their respective homes.

South Africa suspended the deportation of undocumented Zimbabweans in May 2009 and later introduced a special dispensation during which Zimbabweans were given an opportunity to regularise their stay in the neighbouring country by applying for work, business and study permits.

South Africa officially com-

pleted the process of taking applications on 31 December last year.

More than 275 000 Zimbabweans met the December 2010 deadline set by this country, by which time they had to apply to have their stay in the country regularized.

The South African government embarked on the process of documenting Zimbabweans illegally staying in that country following full consultation with the Zimbabwean authorities.

In April 2009, South Africa announced a moratorium on the deportation of Zimbabweans and granted them a special dispensation for one year, so that they could get documents from Zimbabwean officials based in South Africa.

The documentation process was, however, later extended to 31 July, following a special request from the Zimbabwean government, largely due to a backlog in the processing of passports by Zim authorities.

The dispensation was to allow Zimbabweans to enter and remain in South Africa without legal and proper documents and through this dispensation, they were not subjected to deportation.

a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice, and citizens must ask to see a census worker’s identification and badge before answering any questions.

Citizens also do not need to invite a census worker into their home as they are only knocking on doors to verify address information. The only information that you are obliged to disclose is the number of people who live at your address.

As for personal information,

never give your identity number, credit card number, banking or financial situation information to anyone, even if the person claims to be a census worker.

Census workers will also not ask for donations.

Apart from physically visiting homes, census workers can also contact a person by telephone or post. They will, however, not contact anyone by e-mail and citizens are urged not to click on any links or attachments supposedly from the Census Bureau.

Thohoyandou police scored yet another victory when they stopped suspected cable thieves. The police, who were attending to a complaint at about 02:30 on Monday morning, stopped a vehicle which was being driven recklessly.

The driver and his two passengers fled the scene, leaving the bakkie still idling. According to Thohoyandou police spokesperson Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe, police inspected the vehicle and found a load full of cables which they suspect were stolen somewhere. Police on look-out for Ncubes Two brothers from the Johnsley area outside Beit Bridge are on the run, after they teamed up and allegedly stabbed a 21-year-old man, following a dispute over a bottle of beer.

According to a spokesperson for the police, the incident occurred last Friday at around 16:00 at Johnsley village. “According to our preliminary investigations, the victim was drinking beer with the two suspects at a local bottle store during which an altercation ensued. The deceased then later left the drinking place for his homestead and the two men followed him and caught up with him before he had reached his home,” he said.

The suspects allegedly confronted the victim and the quarrel resumed,

resulting in one of the suspects’ pulling out a knife and stabbing the man once in the chest. He collapsed and died.

Soon after the incident, the two suspects fled from the scene. A report was made to the police and no arrests have been made so far.

The deceased was later identified as Calman Bhebhe. His body was taken to a local mortuary.

“As police, we are appealing to members of the public to assist us with information that could possibly lead to the arrest of the two men, who are still at large. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the two suspects, Prince Ncube and Promise Ncube, should visit the nearest police station,” said the police spokesperson.

Sewage are flooding streets in Tshikota Raw sewage is flooding the streets of Tshikota, while the Makhado Municipality in Louis Trichardt apparently remains ignorant of the stinking problem.

The residents claim they have reported the leakages on several occasions to the municipality, but nothing has happened thus far.

The situation is putting the health of the residents at serious risk and

many are complaining that they find it difficult to cook food and eat it because of the stench.

“There is nothing we can do now that the municipality continues to ignore us. This is putting our children’s health at serious risk,” said one of the residents, Ms Mavis Mudau. She said that the problem was reported a month ago, but the municipality is not taking them seriously. She

expressed the opinion that the residents should perhaps follow the example of other places in the country where people first have to engage in protest action before being taken seriously.

The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi said on Monday that the sewage that took the municipality months to fix, was eventually fixed on Friday.

Local scholars to represent country at international tourism conference in France Two pupils from the Emmanuel Christian School in Louis Trichardt, together with their tourism teacher, will fly to France in November to represent South Africa and Limpopo in particular at an international tourism conference.

The pupils, Phophy Silinda and Andy Thovhakale, along with their teacher, Muralda van der Nest, won the Global Travel and Tourism Partnership South Africa (GTTPSA)’s Research Competition. This competition is open to all schools in the

country that offer Tourism as a subject. Only Grade 11 pupils were allowed to enter.

Pupils had to work in pairs and do research on a specific tourism project. This year, the theme was Tourism Festival, and pupils had to write an article on this topic for a leisure magazine.

The article had to focus on the unique features that such a toursism festival offers, especially in the region.

The pupils will now conduct more research to prepare for the international conference in

France that starts on 18 November. According to Andy Thovhakale, they have chosen to focus on the Limpopo Marula Festival because it is a celebration of Limpopo and the spirit of ubuntu.

“We have selected the Limpopo Marula Festival because there is so much to tell in this category. There are so many activities involved, ranging from rugby and street soccer to an exhibition of cultural products.

In this category, we will give Limpopo exposure in France,” explained Andy.

“I am alive and well” - Steven Matodzi A resident of Tsianda Village, Mr Mmboneni Steven Matodzi, wants everybody to know that he is still alive and kicking.

This follows what he described as a miraculous recovery from a number of deadly illnesses.

Matodzi said that things started to go in a downward spiral when he started losing weight at the beginning of last year. He

consulted with numerous local medical practitioners, but they could not diagnose the nature of his disease. After several tests in May last year, he was discovered to be suffering from five life-threatening illnesses: TB, diabetes, pneumonia, peptic ulcers and hypertension.

He was re­ferred to a private hospi­t al in Louis Tric­h ardt where he was admitted for a week before he was transferred to a Polokwane-based private hospital.

He spent several months in that hospital. Matodzi said that he was gravely ill when he was released from hospital.

As his condition was deteriorating fast, his family members took him to Elim Hospital, against his will. After staying for few days at Elim, Matodzi demanded to be discharged, saying his soul would rest in peace if he died in the care of his wife.

Matodzi remembers that it Mr Mmboneni Steven Ma­ was on a Thursday when he was discharged from Elim todzi.

Although he was bedridden, Matodzi requested his wife to hire a car and take him to church on Sunday.

He mentions that it was after the pastor prayed for him that he started to feel changes in his body. Although all the pains vanished immediately, it was difficult for Matodzi to get up as he was as thin as a skeleton. He regained weight as days went by and he finally resumed his work as a community development worker on 1 July this year.

He states that he lost all his friends at the time of his illness, especially after the rumour spread widely that he had passed away.

Matodzi says that he is now a man of God, gifted with healing powers. Matodzi indicates that his illness taught him to believe that no disease is incurable with God. He warns the people to refrain from the practice of concluding that people are dead before their actual death.

Alleged cellphone thief killed at border A 21-year-old Beit Bridge resident was shot dead by a local security guard, after he was caught stealing from a parked South African haulage truck, police have said.

The local police spokesperson, C/Supt Lawrence Chinhengo,said the incident occurred on Thursday at around 23:00. “The victim was among a group of three men who intended to steal from a South Africa truck, which was parked at a local truck inn. The suspects, who were armed with iron bars and knives, emerged from a nearby bushy area and the victim then jumped into the truck and took a Nokia N500 cellphone, which was on the driver’s seat,” he said.

The victim, identified as Munyaradzi Bisa from Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town, was spotted however, by an alert armed security guard

Chinhengo said the other two suspects managed to flee in different directions.

Lucky away victory for United Artists United Artists registered another victory, when they narrowly beat Themba Sunrise Riders 1-0 in their SAB League match at the Ngwenani grounds on Saturday.

Sunrise Riders approached the game aggressively but their stamina vanished with time.

The referee, Joseph Mammba,

reprimanded Ndweleni Masuwanyise of Riders with a card for obstructing Timothy Khangale in the ninth minute.

Sunrise Riders missed a fortune six minutes later. Their centre forward, Shumani Mbave, shot astray from close range.

Muhuyu celebrates its achievements Muhuyu community, one of the most remote areas outside Thohoyandou, was the place to be over the weekend, with many activities taking place.

Villagers gathered and looked back to what they managed to achieve and also to discuss their future. This was during the annual Muhuyu Day, which was held at the local primary school.

The function also celebrated the life of one of the village's late traditional leader, Chief Tendani Tshizuwisa Tshivhase. A plaque was unveiled by senior traditional leader Vho Thovhele Kennedy Midiyavhathu Tshivhase. It also marked the first anniversary of

the reigning chief, Muthungaapfe Tshivhase.

Chief Muthungaapfe Tshivhase said they had many things to celebrate in the village.

“We received running water this year for the first time since 1918.

We have schools and electricity and these are some of the things we should be proud of,” he said.

He said they felt they should also honour his father for the role he played in shaping the village.

“Much of the development in the area is a result of his efforts,” he said.

He said the community, like many rural communities, still desire most of the things found

in developed areas. "We need a tarred road that will link Matangari and Thenzheni and we are just happy that it is already in the IDP of the municipality," he said. He promised to work together with the municipality and their senior traditional leader, Thovhele Midiyavhathu Tshivhase, for the good of his people.

Vho Thovhele Midiyavhathu Tshivhase called for unity in the village. He urged all to follow in the footsteps of the late chief, whom he said had had the development of his people at heart.

The Muhuyu community settled in the area in 1918.

“I started selling here in December 2010, when the hot sun hit one straight in the centre of one's head,” she narrates. “I had been relying on my parents for everything for a long time, but they passed away - first my father in 2005 and then my mother in 2009.” Then she had to fend for herself and her 26-month-old daughter.

She explains that the stall she operates her business from was first used by her brother’s wife,

and that after the sister-in-law had shown no interest in continuing with the hawker’s business, he decided that the space was to be handed over to her.

“My brother has been very supportive,” she acknowledges in a humble tone with her soft voice.

“He gives me total moral support and it helps me stay strong and steady.”

Munyai confesses that she feels deeply stressed on days when business is slack. In this regard, though, hawkers claim that there has been no business in the taxi rank for the past three weeks.

“I depend only on my own means for my livelihood,” she says. “ Business cannot boom every

day. It’s all part of life here on earth. I don’t think I can sell my body to make a living. I choose to stay far from that kind of shame.”

The municipal spokesperson Louis Bobodi lauds Munyai and other hawkers in town. “What Munyai is doing is part of community building,” he says. “We encourage people like her to continue doing the good work.

It helps alleviate the high rate of crime and unemployment. Some of the hawkers are even able to take their children through school with the money they make from selling, something which is praiseworthy.”

Easy 2-0 victory for The Dolphins FC In their Vodacom Promotional League match at the Malamulele Stadium on Sunday, the newly promoted Rospa United, or Davhana Shooting Stars as they were formerly known, gave away league points to The Dolphins FC. The score was 2-0 when the Kgapane-based referee, Quality Kgapane, blew the final whistle.

The hosts had nobody but themselves to blame for the defeat. Their strikers, Mashudu Mashapha and Happy Mahuntsi, squandered obvious scoring chances, much to the disappointment of the fans. The Makhado Rope Skipping Club received overwhelming support from the local community, following a call for help that was published in the Limpopo Mirror. The club needed financial assistance to go to the national tournament that was held from 2 to 7 October in Cape Town. According to the chairperson of the club, Ms Tinyiko Makhubela, they received help from Renkie Building Construction, Makhado Medical Centre, Gym 4U and the Makhado Municipality and they managed to raise R30 000 for transport, catering and accommodation.

The club performed very well and came back with three gold, seven silver and three bronze medals.

Policeman fights crime with music A Vhembe-based policeman wants to fight crime through his inspiring music from the gospel songs he has just released on his latest CD, Faith.

Constable Lufuno Tambani (37) from Vhutalu states in his songs that the villages should be crimefree, even during the night. “I want to take young people from the streets and from all forms of drug and alcohol abuse in our communities. Through my music, I want young people to understand that crime does not pay because they will end up in jail,” said Tambani.

Tambani is also a member of the Limpopo Provincial Police Band based in Sibasa and a lead vocalist in the police jazz band.

He said he joined the South African Police Services (SAPS) police jazz band in 2004, backed by the good track record he had already developed in music. “I developed a passion for singing music while I was still a young boy in Sunday school. I used to sing at my primary school, church and community gatherings. I released my first CD in 2003, which was called Power in the name.”

Absa bank robbed Limpopo police are searching for an unknown number of suspects who broke into an Absa bank in Lephalale on Monday morning and fled after taking a large amount of cash.

According to information available, the suspects broke into the bank by going through the roof at approximately 02:00 in the morning. They then grinded open a safe and fled through the back door after taking a large amount of cash.

At the time of going to press, no arrests had been made yet and investigations are continuing.

Police are asking for assistance from members of the public who might have witnessed suspicious activity around the bank to contact their nearest police station, or to forward information to the crime line at 08600 10111.

Man with tumour in face begs for help The 29-year-old Muthuphei Mulaudzi of Vyeboom HaMasia was a handsome young man who attracted admiration from the opposite sex.

He had a bright future ahead of him, but it will remain a dream if he does not get assistance soon.

He developed a smelly tumour on his nose. He has changed completely and he is today a shadow of his former self.

He is even afraid to look at himself in the mirror. Those who knew him six months ago do not recognize him when they meet him today. His nose is getting worse by they day and even the nostrils are now closing in. The disease he suffers from is rare and it seems as if nurses and doctors are even afraid to touch him.

It started in April when he developed a pimple-like swelling on his nose. It developed into a big swelling, with a stink that repels everyone who comes near him. Feeling the pain and hoping for assistance, he visited the local hospital, with the hope that he would find some assistance.

On three occasions he visited Tshilidzini Hospital and came back home without being treated.

His condition has worsened to the extent that he fears he will soon not be able to breathe as both his nostrils are about to be

closed by the swelling. “Life is hell for me. I had thought that, after visiting the hospital, I would be helped out of my misery. This thing stinks and I suspect that even doctors are afraid to touch me,” said Mulaudzi.

He said every time he visited the hospital, he waited with the hope that he would be assisted, but they ended up giving him another date every time. “I am tired of waiting. I even consulted a specialist, who told me that it would cost me in the region of R10 000, which I do not have as I am not working,” he said. He said the last straw was last weekend when he visited the hospital after being told to come back. “They made me wait and told me not to eat, saying that I would be going to the theatre. But I was told to go home and given another date. I cannot bear it anymore; I need assistance,” he said.

He said he was surprised that every time he was given another date, no medication was given to him. According to him, the government health service is his last resort,

Community members of Madombidzha are still shocked, following an incident where unknown people were spotted digging a grave at a local graveyard last Friday night. It is suspected that some people wanted to bury a person they had killed. The suspects ran away after the police were called in to investigate. The grave was still open at the time of going to press. Leopards ready to crush the Amakhosi The Peter Mokaba Stadium is expected to be packed to capacity on Sunday afternoon. That is where the much-awaited Absa Premiership League match between Black Leopards and Kaizer Chiefs will be staged.

According to Leopards’ head coach, Mr Sunday Chidzambwa, his charges are ready to cause more upsets in the Chiefs’ camp after the latter lost 1-2 to Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Peter Mokaba Stadium two weeks ago.

He revealed that all his players, including their Malawian international, Harry Nyirenda, will be available for selection on Sunday. Nyirenda sustained a serious injury during their league match against Golden Arrows last month.
