After last year’s local government elections, he was elected to be a member of the mayoral committee (MMC) and is responsible for corporate services.

VDM spokesperson Mr Moss Shibambu responded to questions this week, saying that councillors were deployed

to the municipalities by their respective parties. According to their understanding, the ANC will have a caucus meeting, after which they will request the VDM to call a council meeting.

The secretary of the ANC in the Vhembe region, Mr Rudzani Ludere, said that Tshifhango would have to step down from his responsibilities as MMC for corporate services until his case was finalised.

“He cannot be suspended as he has not yet been found guilty of the charges he is facing,” he said. The national spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Col Katlego Mogale, said the latest arrests followed after an intensive investigation into the dealings involving the VBS Mutual Bank. He said the investigations were at an advanced stage.

The national head of the Hawks, advocate Godfrey Lebea, confirmed this.

“This is the beginning, and all the other cases are receiving the necessary attention,” he said. Lebea said that, so far, at least 25 people had been arrested and were in the criminal justice system. They face more than 100 charges, and more suspects are expected to be arrested during the course of the investigation.

Delay in rebuilding of R524 bridge affects business

Tradesmen and taxis owners who conduct business along the Punda Maria road on the R524 in Thohoyandou daily are up in arms with the delay of the South African National Road Agency (SANRAL) in finishing the rebuilding of the bridge between Acacia Park near Thavhani Mall and Thohoyandou Block G, which collapsed in February 2021.

Construction on the bridge started in October last year, with promises that the project would be complete by the end of January this year, but road users will clearly have to wait a while longer. According to sources, the bridge is nearly complete, but because of a lack of resources, the contractor and his workers often do not show

up to continue with their work.

The owner of the Engen garage near the Maniini and Thohoyandou Block G junction, Mr Thuso Mmbadi, said that business had been greatly affected by the collapsed bridge and bad state of the Punda Maria road, as travellers now had to use alternative roads.

They had even had to retrench workers as a result.

“After the collapse of the bridge, SANRAL declared it as an ‘emergency’, and it was to be rebuilt with immediate effect.

A contractor was eventually appointed in October, but they are making very slow progress, which affects our businesses,” said Mmbadi.

Mr Dicky Neluembeni, a taxi operator around Thohoyandou, said the taxi industry also suffered. He said that some taxis who ferry passengers from

Thulamela local municipality spokesperson Mr Nndwamato Tshiila agreed that some of the roads within his municipality were in poor condition at the moment because of the recent heavy rains. He said they were hard at work to make the roads accessible, e.g. filling potholes with sand to provide temporarily relief while damaged roads were being rebuilt.

Limpopo Mirror also sent a media enquiry to SANRAL’s spokesperson, Mr Vusi Mona, who said that he would refer it to a person called “Lwando” at the Northern Region of the agency, but at the time of our going to press, no reply had been received.

A funeral service for Madzivhandila will be held on Saturday, 12 February, at Thohoyandou P West, followed by the burial at Mbaleni graveyard. The service starts at 06:00.

It is with great sadness that the family and communities around Limpopo bid farewell to the late Dr Muthuhadini Madzivhandila (59), who died at the Netcare Clinic in Tshwane on 7 January, after a short illness.

Madzivhandila was the first spokesperson of Mapate Silver Stars (who played for the National Soccer League).

He was also a former teacher, nurse and correctional officer.

He also served on the boards of the National Lotteries Commission and many other different structures at the time of his death.

Mr Adolph Madzivhandila, younger brother of the deceased, said he was dumbfounded when he was informed of his brother’s death. “I was so shocked and confused, my heart was bleeding with pain. Muthuhadini was a good man.” He described his brother as a loving person who smiled at everyone. “He laughed and joked with everyone, and he had no grudges with anybody.

My brother was the uniting factor within the family. We relied on him for advice. We will miss his love, smile and hard work, which contributed to community development initiatives around our area.”

Residents said that they had paid between R20 000 and R40 000 for a piece of land. Some have spent all their investments to build their dream homes, and now all that hard work has been reduced to rubble. “It was a dramatic day for me. They started demolishing the houses, saying that the protocols were not followed and stuff,” said another resident.

The Royal Council has apparently now applied for a court order to stop further demolitions. The senior traditional leader in the area, Thovhele Vho-Midiyavhathu Tshivhase said they cannot comment, as the matter is still in court.

The newspaper then managed to obtain copies of the three “Special Termination Notices” issued by the Makhado Municipality against the Vhembe District Municipality.

Armed with these, Bobodi was asked to reconsider his response that the municipality was not aware of the issue. His answer was again extremely vague and confusing. “It is a standard procedure that we issue notices to whoever owes the municipality, and issuing notices doesn’t not mean that we will cut,” said Bobodi. Bobodi was asked to just confirm whether or not they cut the electricity supply to the treatment plant and pump stations.

To this he responded: “We did issue notices as per standard protocol to all those who are owing us without particularising. We still have to issue them to whoever default to make payments,” Bobodi said.

So at this stage it would seem that the Makhado Municipality might or might not have cut the electricity supply.

It is getting increasingly more difficult to get clear answers from local authorities on issues negatively impacting on residents, as was evident the past week with both the Makhado Municipality and the VDM seemingly pleading ignorance.

On 2 February, Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor in the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Pierre Smalle issued a press release stating that the DA had asked the MEC of CoGHSTA, Basikopo Makamu, to intervene after the Makhado Municipality apparently cut the electricity supply to the Albasini Dam raw water treatment plant. The power was apparently cut on 31 January this year due to the Vhembe District Municipality’s (VDM) non-payment of their electricity bill.

“The electricity supply to the water plant was seemingly cut due to an electricity debt exceeding R13 million. This cut in electricity supply has seen the main reservoir and Mowkop reservoir not receiving any water. As a result, residents and businesses in the new town, old town, industrial area, Makhado Park, Eltivillas, Padkamp and Tshikota areas of the municipality have been left to endure water shortages,” said Smalle in his statement.

Water shortages in Louis Trichardt and surrounds have become an almost weekly, if not daily, occurrence as VDM keeps

on struggling with an ageing water supply infrastructure.

As water is a basic human right, the Limpopo Mirror asked Makhado municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, to confirm whether they had cut off the electricity supply to the treatment plant.

He was also asked whether Vhembe was in arrears on their electricity bill and what the total amount was? The newspaper wanted to now from Bobodi what arrangement was made between Makhado and the VDM to address the situation. Makhado is responsible for electricity supply in the municipal area, while the VDM is responsible for water supply and sanitation.

“The municipality is not aware of that,” Bobodi said.

The newspaper then referred him to councillor Smalle’s press release. Bobodi responded a second time stating: “We are not aware.”

In the meantime, the newspaper also asked the VDM spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, if he had seen the DA statement and if he could comment on the allegation that the electricity supply was cut due to their non-payment of electricity accounts. His response was extremely vague. He indicated that he had seen the DA statement and that the VDM and Makhado Municipality are working on the problem.

Mthebule said that the forum had found out that the VDM had five vacant

He claimed the posts had not been advertised and the positions had been filled without considering the need to accommodate people with disabilities or to create a gender balance in the top structures of the municipality.

The forum further claims that money earmarked for development in the Xitsonga-speaking communities do not always end up in these areas.

As an example, he pointed out that in the 2019/2020 financial year R2,2 million was budgeted for a water reticulation project in the Mpheni area. In 2020/2021, the same community should have received VIP toilets at an estimated cost of R2 million. “This is surprising, as the Waterval, Elim and Hlanganani areas never received such an allocation,” said Mthebule.

According to Ralushai, during the 2019/2020 financial year funds were allocated to the Elim-Mpheni area to address water challenges at the hospital.

Ralushai did not specify how much money had been allocated to this project. He said in the current financial year, R1.5million had been allocated to Waterval for the water project and the project had already been handed over to the contractor. Ralushai did not disclose when the project was handed over to the contractor and who the contractor was.

Tired of empty promises, Mpheni residents opt to build their own bridge

Residents of Mpheni Ha-Makhakhe have taken it upon themselves to build a makeshift pedestrian bridge over a narrow stream, since the Makhado municipality seemingly reneged on their promise to erect a crossing bridge for them.

Residents say they have been without a road for many years and have to cross the stream on a daily basis to reach the access road to get to work. During the rainy season, the water level rises and it becomes dangerous, especially for the children, who have to get to school. “Even when there are funerals, our people need to make plans for a hearse to reach the deceased’s home. Sometimes this is impossible,” they say.

A group of residents decided not to wait for the municipality any longer, but do something about it themselves, so they collected rocks and raised money for cement, and thus built their own makeshift bridge.

However, one of the co-ordinators of the project at Mpheni, Mr Dan Magadagela said that, although they have tried their best, the makeshift bridge is not strong enough. “What we need is a proper bridge. I mean a real bridge, not a makeshift structure.” He said that numerous requests and proposals for a road had been submitted to the Makhado municipality over the years, but that they only receive fruitless promises in response.

Magadagela said that when they enquired about the promised bridge, they were told the municipality would not be

building a temporary bridge anymore, but a permanent one instead. “But when we requested that the municipality follow up on it, we were told it was no longer on the cards. We were told that there is no money for a permanent bridge – not even for a temporary bridge. We then asked if they could at least provide us with cement so we can build the bridge ourselves, but again we were told that there is no money,” Magadagela said.

Makhado municipal spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi gave his assurance that the municipality cares for the community.

He said that they are busy checking with the technical department to see if they can help the community with a proper temporary bridge in order for them to reach their homes safely.

Bodies of man and woman found next to car near Campbell road Crime The police in Musina are looking for the suspect(s) responsible for the murder of a man and a woman whose bodies were discovered in the bushes next to the Campbell road outside Musina at about 08:00 on the morning of Wednesday, 2 February.

The police received information about the discovery and rushed to the scene. One of the

victims was lying on the ground next to the passenger door of a silver-grey Tata bakkie, while the other was leaning out of the driver’s door. Both victims, identified as Meshack Ndou (44) and a woman only known as Anna, had bullet wounds.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the victims might have been pursued by another vehicle, whose occupant(s) shot at them. Their vehicle apparently swerved into

the bushes, went through a fence and came to a stop.

A case of two counts of murder has been opened. The motive for this killing has not been determined yet, as the police are still investigating the case.

Tatenda Mashaire, the Zimbabwean woman who was arrested on 21 January this year for dealing in illegal cigarettes and contravening the Immigration Act, was sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment or a fine of R40 000 by the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 4 February.

Mashaire was arrested after a sting operation by the Hawks, Crime Intelligence unit and the South African National Defence Force after they had received information that Mashaire was illegally dealing in Remington Gold cigarettes worth R43 684.

Pilani has found the perfect balance for a happy, successful career Entertainment Radio listeners may be curious to know why Musina FM presenter Mashudu Patrick Pilani always shows such an interest in matters relating to public transportation.

He can often be heard during his afternoon drive show encouraging taxi drivers to respect their passengers. The answer is simple. Pilani shuffles between his career as radio presenter during the week and being a taxi driver on weekends, and when it comes to practising what one preaches, Pilani is a true example.

Affectionately known as MP3, Pilani is not only very popular with Musina FM listeners; he is also loved by the many commuters that he transports between Musina town and Nancefield location.

Pilani presents the Kasi 104 Drive show, which airs between 15:00 and 18:00 from Monday to Friday. He is not a novice in the broadcasting industry either. He began his career with Musina FM back in 2012. “In 2014, I decided to take a long break to concentrate on my events man-

agement business, but it suffered a terrible blow when Covid hit the world two years ago. I was lucky that the radio management felt there was still a place with them for me, and when they asked me to come back, I accepted.” He re-joined the radio team in March last year and has not looked back since.

Born and bred in Musina, Pilani recalls how his teachers recognised a certain talent in him from a young age. “I would always be at the top when it came to unprepared speeches and debates. I represented my school in several debate competitions and afterwards returned home with silverware.

I could not resist to join Musina FM in 2012 after a successful audition. Radio broadcasting runs in the family. My younger brother, Vuledzani Ishmael Pilani, is

Asked what he loves most about the two jobs he is juggling, he answered, “There is nothing more fulfilling than sliding in behind the microphone. Through radio, I can contribute positively to community development and change lives. However, when I’m driving a taxi on weekends, I feel very happy because I can physically interact with different people. This is where I find so many of the topics that I end up using during my shows in the week,” he said.

The 26-year-old Omphulusa Ramenu of Muhuyu took nearly five years to complete her first collection of poems, titled Nkho ya Vhurendi, and seeing the result of all her hard work in printed form is undoubtedly one of the proudest moments of her life so far.

Omphulusa attended Thenzheni Primary and Lucas Ratshalingwa High School, where her love of poetry started in the Grade 8. “A teacher gave us an assignment to write a poem, which I presented to the entire class. After that, my teacher started to encourage me to work on this skill.”

Nineteen poems finally made their way into this collection, which is rich in literary expressions in pure Tshivenda style.

She believes that poets are the right people to keep a language alive. “It’s up to us to record our words and idioms in the form of poetry.

I noticed that our language is fading and getting swallowed up by the frequent use of English in our day-to-day life. That’s when I decided to use my poetry to revive Tshivenda.”

Omphulusa first started writing poetry and plays for herself. She would write her creative pieces and hand them out to friends and family to read for their pleasure.

“Poetry is an art of expres-

sion; an art of addressing deep-rooted issues that people go through every day, serving as therapy and counselling. Poetry serves both as the performer and the audience, bringing relaxation, stimulation, enjoyment, excitement, peace, and joy. It can be educational, empower, unite and challenge one to look at things differently,” she said.

She invited readers who find understanding certain unfamiliar expressions hard to call her or arrange a meeting with her, so that she can explain them more clearly.

You will be able to better understand contracts and minimize the chances of being ripped off in this competitive industry.” This advice comes from Ndamulelo Tshifura, a final year BA Criminal Justice student at the University of Venda who released his debut album last month.

Famously known by his stage name of Dazeey, Tshifura resides at Ha-Magidi, a stone’s throw away from Sibasa. He surprised even the veterans of the industry with his 13-track compilation, titled Prince of Amapiano. “I took my time to release this album, as I had to balance

my music with my education.

Sometimes I would work on a song and shelve it for days while I was busy with my schoolwork. Now that I am about to complete my studies, there will be more time to dedicate to my music career.”

The album already seems to be received well by both music lovers and radio stations. “If you do your work with passion, success will automatically follow. I am not surprised that the album is doing well, because, like everything else I do, I put a lot of effort into the album,” he said.

Making the album, Dazeey collaborated with artists such as Swed, DJ Les MSA, C Phiwe Silverton and Alliance.

love, Makhosi, Knocking at your door, and Giligida. He is currently working on a single, called Ndi do mu landa, which will be released at the end of this month.

“Although I love music, education is my number one priority because I know how important that foundation is.

I have seen many big names living on handouts today because they neglected their education once their music careers started to blossom. If we all get proper education, South Africa would be a better place to stay,” he said.

Shufflers Ragimana is our Artist of the Month Rudzani “Shufflers” Ragimana was selected

by Phalaphala FM to be the Lizhakandila artist of the month for January, due to his massive contribution to the Tshivenda music industry.

This move forms part of the Ri fhululedza Mazhakandila project that the station has implemented, which is aimed at celebrating artists in the Tshivenda Music industry across all music genres.

Ragimana was born in 1967, the fifth of six children. He has three sisters and two brothers.

His childhood was spent firstly at Makonde Primary School and later at Raluvhimba Secondary School. From an early age he realised that getting a good education was important and he started saving money to pay for his tuition. In 1987, he enrolled for a teaching degree at the Venda College of Education, with maths and biology as main subjects.

Ragimana is currently a teacher at Silemale Secondary school, where he teaches mathematics for Grade 9s and life sciences for Grade 10 to 12 learners.

He became part of the group Thinawanga Band, which was formed by the late Azwivhavhi Ndou from Makonde, where he played the guitar. The group also included artists such as Wilson Dzebu (drums and lead vocalist), Philip Tshililo (guitarist), Mbula Raphasha (dancer) and Azwivhavho Ndou (guitarist).

When the group disbanded, Ragimana’s late cousin, Avhapfani Elvis Mukwevho, bought him a guitar and his brother Fhatuwani bought him drums. He then formed his own group, called Shufflers. The other members of the group were Wilson Dzebu (keyboard), Norman Tshikalange (keyboard), Mboniseni Makwarela (bass guitar), Vuwani Manyaga (drums), Saul Nephawe (backing vocalist), Mike Raphulu (backing vocalist) and Phillip Tshililo (lead guitarist). From there he went on to become part of Venda Kids and performed as bass guitarist for three years.

Ragimana has won several awards, including the Vhembe District Arts Award in 2006 and a Tshima (Tshivenda Music Award).

Thirteen of these students matriculated with bachelor’s passes, nine with diploma-entry clearance, and nine with certificates, while 14 passed with supplementary exams, and 14 did not pass.

In 2020, the school had a 38.5% pass rate and in 2021 it improved by 14%, earning them a pass rate of 51.7%, as well as an award for the third-highest improvement.

Malindi said he was very thankful that the department had given him the chance to do his matric. He is happy and proud of his results and is geared and ready to further his studies. He aims for a bachelor’s degree in business studies.

Malindi has encouraged other inmates to grab hold of this opportunity to turn their lives around as he is doing.

“The season of the marula (mukumbi) gives us a good opportunity to make money. It costs us nothing to collect the fruits. We sell 20-litre containers of marula beer for as much as R200; 2-litres for R20.

There is good money in it for someone who is unemployed,” said Tshiguvho.

Ms Azwihangwisi Netshifhefhe is also from the area. “Life is hard for the rural woman who does not work, but come the marula season, one can put food on the table for the family because customers come in larger numbers to buy our beer.”

Teenage pregnancies still a big problem for schools Most schools in the Vhembe District have adopted a policy that forces parents to accompany their pregnant children to school every day to watch and take care of them, until they give birth.

The Edison Nesengani Secondary School in Vuwani, one of the top-performing schools in the Vhuronga 1 Circuit in Vhembe, adopted this same policy five years ago. Things got somewhat heated, though, when a well-known local advocate took to Facebook and wrote “Dear Nesengani [community members]. Please give me details of all parents who [are] forced to be at school every day because their children are pregnant.”

Tricky hurdle ahead of Musina United Tornado too strong for Blackpool

The struggle for promotion and to escape the relegation axe at the end of the season will continue among the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League this weekend.

Six matches will be played at different places throughout the province tomorrow afternoon.

All eyes will be on the match between Musina United and Mpheni Home Defenders.

United will enjoy the homeground advantage as the match will be played at the Lesley Manyathela Stadium. Home Defenders must win the match at all costs to keep their title hopes alive. They are currently leading the pack with 18 points,

four ahead of Ablex United. On the other hand, Musina United will spare no effort in their bid to collect the full points at stake. United are not on the safe side in terms of relegation.

They are perched in the third position from the bottom of the log.

Giyani Happy Boys are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations for their match against Emmanuel FC that will be played at the Xikukwani Stadium outside Giyani. The other match that is expected to attract a huge number of spectators will be between Vondwe XI Bullets and Mikhado FC. It will be played at the Tshifudi Stadium.

Tshikwarani Tornado registered a 3-2 victory over Mira Blackpool in their Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators league match that was played at the Madodonga grounds on Sunday.

That Tornado would soon get a goal was clear from the start as good cohesion existed between their defenders and the strikers. They could have struck in the first 10 minutes, but their strikers were off target.

After failing to impress the team’s supporters in their last five league games, Vondwe XI Bullets “rehabilitated” themselves and managed to collect the maximum points last Saturday. They beat Blackpool FC 2-1 at the Rabali Stadium.

Vondwe XI Bullets had been languishing at the bottom of the log since the beginning of the season. The weekend’s victory pushed them a step up on the log standings. They are now perched in the second-last position with six points accumulated from eight matches. The victory was the second for Bullets in eight matches.

The home side capitalised on the setback and increased the lead two minutes afterwards. Their slender striker, Oscar Mmboneni, was on target with a ground-cutter. New Generation gained momentum as the game progressed.

They pulled one back towards the end of the first half. Pfananani Mufamadi gave the ball the final touch after a scramble within the box.

New Generation approached the last stanza with more confidence. They brought in Avhapfani Nemakonani and Unone Ramuima and sacrificed Tshilidzi Rambuda and Nduvho Netshirando.

The replacements proved to be a clever move and New Generation found the equaliser through Martin Ragima in the 54th minute.

The wheel of fortune turned against the home side when New Generation took the lead in the 65th minute. Their overlapping defender, Tshilidzi Nthangeni, beat the offside trap and sent the keeper the wrong way.

Two New Generation players, Pfananani Mufamadi and Tshilidzi Nthangeni, were reprimanded with a card, following a continued argument with the referee.

Thulfa extends the club registration period

By Frank Mavhungu The registration period for clubs that wish to become members of the Thulamela Local Football Association (Thulfa) in the 2022 soccer season has been extended until Friday, 25 February. The clubs were initially given until last Friday, 4 February, to register or renew their membership with the association.

According to the chairman of the association, Mr Ephraim Singo, the extension was influenced by the fact that they could not register all the players in time. He said that the system through which they registered the players had been very slow over the past weeks.

About 200 clubs have already registered with the association.

Singo said that most of the clubs had about 30 players, but the system, which is apparently not very user-friendly, can only register about 100 players per day. The registration fee for teams is R3 000, but the clubs had been given the option to pay half of the amount now. The balance will be payable before the start of the second-round league activities.

Asked how the postponement would affect their league programme, Singo said that the teams would be compelled to play two matches every weekend to recoup the lost time.

The association will also stage two knockout competitions in the coming

season, namely the MTG and PIB KO Competition and the Mpho Mathoho Electrical KO Competition. The normal league programme is scheduled to start over the weekend of 26 and 27 February.

Thulfa has promoted 11 teams to the Safa Vhembe Regional League at the end of last season. The teams that were promoted to the higher division last season are: Makonde Home Defenders, Matsika Shooting Stars, Tshaulu Hungry Lions, Mukumbani Shooting Stars, Tshithuthuni Remember My Promise, Lwamondo Mighty Brothers, Madzivhanani FC, Matovha Devoted Vultures, Mukula Fast XI, Ravies FC and MD United Stars.

Maelula United Brothers and Stars share the spoils

By Kaizer Nengovhela Maelula United Brothers and Eagles United Stars played to 1-all draw in their Safa Vhembe MMK Administrator league match that took place at the Maelula Grounds on Saturday.

The match was equally contested, but Brothers created more opportunities. From the start of the match, Brothers were clearly the stronger team, with their midfielders dishing out promising passes to their front runners.

In the 10th minute, Sello Molewa of Brothers received a good pass from Mulalo Munzhedzi, but shot wide with only the keeper, Thagu Masia, left to beat.

minutes to open their account.

Their bulldozer-striker, Sello “Ferrari” Molewa, hooked in the ball, following a scramble within the box.

The match turned out to be a more balanced affair after the goal.

That was influenced mainly by the fact that Stars were cooling the ball down in the middle of the park, giving their opponents no chance to do as they pleased.

Stars scored the equaliser via Rudzani Ralushai after he received a good pass from Maano Phaswana.

Brothers enhanced their scoring chances by adding to the number of their strikers as they approached the opposition danger area, thus making things difficult for the Stars’ defence in the last stanza.

By Frank Mavhungu Muziafera Blue Eagles were by far too strong for Tshakhuma RO United, whom they crushed 3-1 in their MMK Administrators League match that was played at the Tshitungulwane Grounds on Sunday.

The first half was characterised by empty threats as both sides had managed to create scoring opportunities and squandered them.

Blue Eagles were the first to knock on the opposition’s door. Their left winger, Awelani Mphephu, went loose from the centre of the park and hesitated for too long to unleash in front of the goal mouth.

He ultimately lost possession.

The visitors from Tshakhuma came close to scoring in the 18th minute. Their vastly experienced centre forward, Khathutshelo Mukomafhedzi, received a neat pass from Maboho Nevari just outside the box.
