He was bleeding through his nose and mouth, had bruises to his head and face, and he was unable to speak. One of the residents came forward and identified him as Baldwin Mavhunga from Tshirenzheni village,” Dathi said.

The victim was taken to Siloam Hospital by ambulance and a case of attempted murder was opened by the State, since the victim was unable to speak.

At about 16:30 that afternoon, the police received a call from the hospital, informing them that the victim had passed away. The initial charge of attempted murder was then changed to murder.

“No arrests have been made so far, but the police are busy investigating the incident,” Dathi said.

The brother of the deceased, Mr Ndivhuwo Mutheiwana, said that Mavhungu had left his

home at Tshirenzheni on the Saturday afternoon at around 17:00 to visit his girlfriend at Dopeni village, and he never returned. “We are very hurt.

We want the people who did this to be arrested and put behind bars. Baldwin was a very friendly and humble guy.

He was a mechanic and worked very hard for his money.”

Mutheiwana said he used to work with his brother at his workshop in Tshirenzheni. “He loved his job; he was a good mechanic.”

Mr Richard Ramabulana of SAYAC said that, because of the escalating crime, communities were trying everything to prevent it. “The communities are tired of crime, yet we don’t condone those taking matters into their own hands. The police are there to deal with such matters.

All we can do is to assist in catching these criminals and wait for the police to come and make the arrests.”

Handicapped man perishes in fire

By Silas Nduvheni The Mulaudzi family from Dzwerani-Hakhangale village, just outside Thohoyandou, were left devastated when their handicapped son died after a fire broke out in their 10-room house last Tuesday morning (31 May).

According to acting Vhembe police spokesperson Sgt Vuledzani Dathi, the Mulaudzi couple left their handicapped 23-year-old twin sons, Ngaahule and Akonisaho, home sleeping when they went to work at around 05:30 on the morning of the incident. When the family’s domestic worker, Ms Rosinah Masala, arrived for work, she found that the house was on fire and shouted for help.

Neighbours ran to the scene to help, breaking the burglar-proofed door, so that they could get into the house.

Akonisaho managed to escape

the fire and ran out of the house unharmed, but despite their efforts to rescue Ngaahule, they were too late as the fire had already spread to all the bedrooms.

Dathi said the police were on their daily patrol duties when they were alerted about a certain house in the village that was on fire and went to investigate. Ngaahule was certified dead at the scene, burnt beyond recognition. The deceased’s body was taken to the Elim government mortuary for an autopsy and for further police investigation. Dathi said the cause of the fire was still unknown, but that an electrical fault could not be ruled out.

Ngaahule’s parents, Mr Shumani Erick Mulaudzi, and his wife, Josephine, who are both teachers at different primary schools, are still in a state of shock after the incident. “We understand that we will all die one day, but Ngaahule died a

terrible death. It has left a deep, aching void inside our hearts.

However, we are thankful to the Dzwerani community who came in large numbers and bravely saved some of the house’s contents by carrying them out before everything could be engulfed by the fire.

They even helped to clean the house afterwards,” said Mulaudzi.

Shock after body of boy is found hanging from tree

By Silas Nduvheni A 12-year-old boy was found dead, hanging from a rope around his neck tied to a mango tree in his grandfather’s backyard in Lwamondo-Tshifulanani village, just outside Thohoyandou, late Sunday afternoon (5 June).

Ndivhuwo Mudau was a Grade 6 learner at Mutshipisi Primary School in the nearby Lwamondo-Zwavhavhili village.

According to the boy’s grandfather, Mr Shakes Netshivhale, he raised Ndivhuwo and his sister, Ipfani, who had been living with him since they were babies.

Netshivhale, who works in Gauteng, said he had nearly fainted when he had received the call, informing him that his grandson, who still lived at his

house, was dead. He said he was told that Ipfani (15) had found her brother’s body after she had returned from buying bread at the nearby spaza shop at around 18:10 that evening.

“She said she dropped the loaf of bread and screamed loudly when she saw her brother hanging by his neck. The neighbours heard her screams and came to investigate. They were shocked when they saw Ndivhuwo’s dead body hanging from the tree. The boy was spotted playing outside with other boys only a few hours earlier that day,” said Netshivhale.

Soon after Netshivhale arrived home, he said, he tried to find out what exactly had happened, and was told that Ndivhuwo had not hung himself. He was apparently told by those who were at the scene that, when they found the boy hanging from the tree,

he apparently had also had rope around his shoulders and legs. “We suspect that he might have been strangled to death and then hung on the tree,” Netshivhale said.

However, according to the acting spokesperson for the SAPS in Vhembe, Sgt Vuledzani Dathi, the police did not find anything suspicious about the scene.

“He [Ndivhuwo] was declared dead by the EMS at the scene. His body was thoroughly scrutinised, and no foul play is suspected. No suicide note was found at the scene. The body was taken to the government mortuary for an autopsy and further police investigation.”

Netshivhale said that the family deeply mourned Ndivhuwo’s unexpected death.

Ndivhuwo will be buried in the local Lwamondo-Tshifulanani graveyard on Friday, 10 June.

Mayor Mawela’s assault case goes to DPP to make a final decision

By Silas Nduvheni The assault case of the embattled mayor of Musina Local Municipality, Godfrey Nkhanedzeni Mawela, was postponed by the Mutale Magistrate’s Court to 29 June for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to make a decision.

Mawela (39) is being accused of assaulting Carries Munzhelele (25) after a drinking spree at a tavern in Muswodi-Dipeni village in the early hours of Saturday, 26 February. Both Mawela and Munzhelele are residents of Muswodi-Dipeni village, outside Musina.

He first appeared in the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 28 February, and his case was postponed to 29 April for further police investigations. The case has since been postponed several times and Mawela was released after paying bail of R3 000.

Meanwhile, the mayor is still not sure whether the step-aside policy of the African Nation Congress is applicable to him. This policy implies that members who are involved in criminal cases have to step down, until their fate is resolved.

Previously, Mawela confirmed that he had received a reply from the provincial integrity commission, informing him that he had to appear before the commission. Mawela said that no date had been set yet for such a hearing.

Political prisoner Amos Mbedzi’s fight ends in hospital In Memoriam

Amos Mbedzi, who was sentenced to 85 years in prison by the Swaziland High Court in 2008, died on his home soil of South Africa on Tuesday, 7 June.

The life of the high-profile political prisoner from Swaziland, Amos Mbedzi, ended on a sad note on Tuesday morning (7 June). Mbedzi, from Makonde village outside Thohoyandou, died at a hospital in Polokwane after the Swazi government had sent him back home to finish the remaining part of his sentence in South Africa. Mbedzi was returned to South Africa in March this year, after suffering prolonged ill-health while in prison in Swaziland.

Before his arrest in Swaziland, Amos was an employee of the then Limpopo Department of Local Government (now called Coghsta) and a member of the South African Communist Party (SACP).

One of the hawkers from Ha-Magau said she met him on the street recently and he greeted her. She said she had known Themba for a long time, and that he had been living at the garage for years.

Themba is apparently Zimbabwean and speaks Shona.

Another hawker at the garage at Eltivillas confirmed this. She said that she had been providing Themba with food and clothes for years. The hawker said that the Tshikota community often came to the garage and assaulted the Zimbabweans who slept next to garage, accusing them of the crimes in the area. That was when Themba apparently fled to the petrol station at Bandelierkop, where the Thames found him. The hawker said that, when the family took him to Eltivillas last month, they provided him with food and clothes.

The family claimed that none of them had actually looked at John’s body when he had died in 1989 to verify his identity. Seeing the homeless man, who they said bore the same marks on his body as John, they started to wonder if they might have buried the wrong man all those years ago.

A few weeks after the family had taken Themba in, he apparently started acting aggressively and demanded to be taken back to where they had found him (presumably the petrol station at Bandelierkop).

In March, the family had DNA tests conducted to determine Themba’s true identity, but the results, which they received a month later in April, showed that he was not related to them.

Some of the family members, however, insisted that the DNA tests be re-conducted, while others wanted to let things be, which ultimately caused a division within the family.

After housing him for almost three months as a member of their family, the Thames seemingly washed their hands of him and allowed him to return to the

During last Wednesday’s imbizo, local residents from Khubvi, including some from nearby areas such as Tshipako, Thenzheni, Muhuyu and Makonde, all complained about poor infrastructure such as roads, RDP houses, water and electricity.

A representative from the house of traditional healers, Mr Azwinndini Mbulaheni Mahada, pleaded with the municipality to stop people from cutting down all the trees in the area. “It is bad for the environment and the ecosystem to de-bush the area. As traditional healers, we also depend on trees for muti purposes. Please, help us to conserve the environment and protect our survival as traditional healers,” he said.

When replying to the residents’ complaints, the acting VDM mayor, Avhashoni Tshifhango, said they would try their utmost to improve service delivery in the municipality. “We don’t want to lie to you. We shall address all your concerns after the new financial budget kicks off on 1 July 2022,” he said.

Like a battered boxer, he acknowledged the concerns of the Tshivhase royal house, and said as a listening government, they were going to address all their concerns.

Mahada is known for working with bees at his traditional surgery. When asked how the bees helped him with healing the sick, he explained that he was a member of the Vhambedzi clan, who used all kinds of insects and wild animals, such as pythons, to diagnose and cure ailments. “My ancestors gave me bees to help me when I work. If a person starts to behave violently inside my surgery, they [the bees] attack on the spot,” he added.

Mahada is also an artist who has already recorded four albums to date. His music is well received by the community. In 2018, one of his songs, called Ani fushei ngani, won him the best Tshivenda Indigenous Song award at the Tshivenda Music Awards.

Mr Azwinndini Mahada, a representative of the Traditional Healers Association, denied allegations that traditional healers are the main driving force behind ritual murders in the district.

Mahada spoke out at the Vhembe District Municipality’s imbizo, which was held at Khubvi village on Wednesday, 1 June, also saying that not all traditional healers in the district were members of the Traditional Healers Association.

“I put it categorically clear when I addressed the district on our grievances, that the municipality should help us to preserve the indigenous trees we get our medicines from. We don’t use human tissue as we don’t believe that it works,” he said.

Tee Boy The-Vocalist is getting ready to release his “Down to Earth” album

Tee Boy The-Vocalist will soon be releasing his second album, called Down to Earth.

By Thembi Siaga Thembuluwo Thanyani, aka Tee Boy The-Vocalist, is one of Vhembe’s

emerging young talents. The rising hip-hop singer assures his fans that he will be releasing his second album, titled Down To Earth, next month, and that they will not be disappointed when they hear what he has cooked up for them this time.

The 25-year-old artist, who resides at Tshifudi Tshikombole village, is slowly but surely making his way up the ladder in the music industry. The upcoming album follows his first very successful album, University of Scotland, which was released two years ago, including the song O Sheliwa Muya.

Down to Earth will be packed with 10 full tracks. “For this album, I’m working with the likes of Blessa, Batondy, Worth Vee and other great artists. The album touches on things that are happening in society,

but my music also focuses on love songs,” he said.

Thanyani completed Grade 12 at Mpandeli High School in 2015 and attained his diploma in public management from the Tshisimani TVET College in 2019. He ventured into the music fraternity 12 years ago and his desire for singing love songs earned him the moniker ‘Doctor Love’. He says he was inspired by the acclaimed late American hip-hop rapper/actor, Tupac Shakur.

His talent was sharpened by one of the top local VenRap artists, Rotondwa Silimela, or ‘Batondy’ as he is famously known in music circles, who also featured on his first album.

“Since then, I have been getting a lot of supporters and followers. I was a big fan of Tupac Shakur before I met Batondy, who secured a name for himself in the Vhembe region with the quality of his music and style,” said Thanyani.

On the challenges he faces as an artist, he says, is that balancing work and music can be difficult. “The trick is to find the time for everything.”

Mudau’s trademark voice makes him stand out in the broadcasting industry Entertainment In school he was called ‘The Diamond Voice’ because of his strong voice, which made him stand out among his fellow orators. Mudau commands a huge following and is counted among this border-town radio station’s best presenters. He says that his joining Musina FM was purely a matter of being at the right place at the right time. “I am a poet, and I had just recorded a song, titled Life is so beautiful. This was back in 2015. I went to Musina FM to submit my music, and when I arrived there, I saw a notice pinned to the building, indicating that the radio station was looking for someone to present their Top 20 Countdown programme on Friday nights. On hearing my voice, the station manager asked me to submit my CV, so I complied. I was invited to an interview a week later and impressed the panel so much that they immediately decided to hire me for the position.”

That was where his journey at Musina FM began. Since he started in 2015, he has been moved around between various programmes; from the Morning Drive show, to Rhumba Beats, Divhavh-

upo and the Weekend Sports programme. Mudau is currently presenting The Early Rush show, which airs on weekdays between 06:00 and 09:00.

Besides being a presenter, he also occupies the position of programme manager at the radio station. His job in this capacity includes making sure that all the programmes are aligned to the broadcasting legislation and that presenters are doing their work professionally at all times.

Mudau was born at Ha-Mashau Bodwe, outside Louis Trichardt, and grew up in Nzhelele Ha-Mandiwana, where

he attended school. “I did my primary schooling at Mandiwana Primary and proceeded to Tshala High School, where I matriculated and got the nickname, ‘The Diamond Voice’. I am proud and happy that my trademark voice is making me stand out in the broadcasting industry,” he said.

When he is not at Musina FM’s studio, Mudau likes to spend as much of his time as possible writing poetry and making music. Onstage, he goes by the name of ‘Mutavhatsindi The Poet’. He is working on a full album as we speak, which is to be released later this year.

Mmbulaheni launches his second book

By Kaizer Nengovhela Mashudu Worship Mmbulaheni just launched his second inspirational book, called What kind of hatred is this? which he believes will shine a ray of hope for those who feel alone and discouraged by their situation in life. His first book, Ndivengo, was published in 2020.

The Shakadza-born author says his objective, while he wrote both these books, was to offer hope to the hopeless. “Many people are sad and unhappy, and hopefully my book can give them some new courage to press on, regardless of the challenges they are faced with. It is for both young and old, and definitely entertaining,” he said. “Young people must keep doing what they love to do most, again and again, until they get it right. Many people have found talents within themselves that they never even knew they had, and that was what encouraged me to also start putting my writing skills to use.”

Mmbulaheni says that, during the lockdown, he started to recall moments in his life where he had gone through really tough times but that, in spite of this, he refused to be controlled by the situation. “Instead, I became the driver of my own life. I started to figure out how our local celebrities have done it. It was not by overnight success, but through the decision to take control off their situation and work towards achieving their dreams and desires. In life, people come across different challenges indeed, which either make them strong or vulnerable. No matter how good or bad, we choose our own battles,” he said.

The book also suggests that people should take their talents seriously if they want to stand out and make a change in society.

Art & Entertainment Another full album for ‘Vhathenga’ Muthenga Entertainment Fans of VenRapper Khodani Muthenga, famously known as Vhathenga, will be pleased to know that the artist is working on his second full album, titled Zwi do luga, which is to be released in September this year. He says that the upcoming 12-track album is dedicated to all his loyal fans, and is in appreciation of their support throughout his music career.

The artist, who hails from Madombidzha outside Louis Trichardt, has released a number of singles, along with his debut full album, Vhutshilo, over the years. He first shot into stardom with the release of his first song, titled My Rock, in 2007, which features fellow VenRap singer ShonyMrepa. My Rock dominated regional as well as national airwaves, making Vhathenga an instant sensation at the time.

The artist vanished from the music scene for a number of years, but reappeared again in 2018 when he released his single, Ndo neta. His album, Vhutshilo, featuring Meskay and ShonyMrepa, was released that same year. Since then, he has released more singles, namely To the leaders (2019), Salala (2020) and Mjolo (2021). The talented artist specialises in drawings and usually works on commission. He draws any portrait according to his customer’s desire. “I draw exactly what the customers ask me to draw. If I’m not doing commission drawings, I just randomly pick something I can practise on,” he said.

Twenty-one-year-old Fulufhelo Mawela from Divhani village in Nzhelele has an eye – and a steady hand - for fine arts.

“People always tell me not to stop doing art, and that gives me the courage to keep on going.

Doing art eases a lot of stress, even when I feel depressed. Art expresses our thoughts and feelings in a way that pictures seldom can. It brings us closer to the ones we no longer have, being more creative and expressive than pictures,” he said.

Fulufhelo started showing an interest in art at the age of eight, during art class at Divhani Primary School in 2009. “I was in Grade 5 when we started doing art, but it was only in 2017 that I started to take it seriously.

World-renowned artist from Malamulele wants to teach art skills to young people

By Bernard Chiguvare Patrice Mabasa is one of Vhembe’s true gems. The man has an inborn talent that discerns him from others - making art that really captures the eye. He is not only famed for his extraordinary paintings and sculptures locally; he is an internationally renowned artist whose work has been exhibited in countries such as France and Britain.

Mabasa has won numerous awards and he has also won competitions such as the National

ABSA Fine Arts competition. His work has even been published in the AA Traveller’s Art Guide.

Mabasa (47), a resident of Mavambe village outside Malamulele, studied fine art at Wits Technicon but could not complete his studies because of financial constraints.

“This was not the end of the world for me, though. The two years at the institution brought a lot of insight into my work,” he said, and so he returned home to throw himself into his art.

The artist has come a long way since his request to

meet the late Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki in 2006, so that he could personally give them the half-bust sculptures he had made of them at the time.

He was granted his wish in 2008, when he got the opportunity to meet Mbeki, who was still president then. “The president was very impressed with my talent and the Department of Sports Arts and Culture started sponsoring me.

Realising that there were many unemployed youths, I built a training centre in Malamulele, where I now train young people in artwork.

There was an amazing response from the community from the start, with more than 20 students lining up at my office for training.” He says he wants to continue to transfer his skills to the youth, including his own three children.

Making art is Mabasa’s means of living. He vividly remembers how his passion for art started even before he went to school as a little boy. He says he used to draw pencil sketches of people and landscapes, which he sold. “By 1993, I found that customers were not that interested in my drawings anymore, so I started making flowerpots from clay. I marketed my art in Malamulele and Thohoyandou,” he said.

This year marks the 46th anniversary of the 16 June 1976 student uprising in Soweto, which left hundreds of young people dead when they protested against the enforcement of Afrikaans by the apartheid regime as a medium of instruction. After 1994, the new democratically elected government declared 16 June as National Youth Day and June as youth month. The declaration honours the contribution of the youth in the struggle for the liberation of South Africa.

Ravele said that youth month had become an opportunity for various organisations and individuals to address the concerns facing today’s youth in South Africa through various activities and/or campaigns. This year, national youth day and youth month will be celebrated under the theme: “The year of Charlotte Maxeke: Growing youth employment for an inclusive and transformed society.”

She said that Youth Day not only celebrated the youth of 1976 but also highlighted the overwhelming influence that young people had in society.

As the country commemorates the 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising, Mabasa has dedicated three weeks to making two sculptures, one depicting the dying 12-year-old schoolboy, Zolile Hector Pieterson, who was shot and killed during the uprising. Mabasa is planning to donate these sculptures to the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.

Nephawe makes a good living selling livestock Agriculture

Besides the cattle, goats and doves, Nephawe also has donkeys, chickens and dogs he sells, and he plants his own maize. “I have not needed to visit the shop to buy maize meal for the past nine years, because I plant my own maize.

Last year, I produced 56 bags of 80kg sorghum mealie meal, of which my family still eats today,” he said.

For many years now, Petrus Nephawe (74) of Tshivhongweni village in the Niani area has been providing for his wife and eight children from the money he generates from selling livestock and domestic animals.

Nephawe stole the show during an engagement session with other livestock farmers, held at the Department of Education’s offices at Tshipise Tsha Sagole two weeks ago, where he shared a very motivating message. He said that for young people, especially those from the Niani area, to seriously consider livestock farming as a way to fight poverty was very important. “Informal livestock farming can be a very good source of income for everyone. We don’t all have to work in offices to earn a decent salary. Young people must come forward, so we can teach them how it is done.”

Newspapers help put food on many tables The straight-talking vendor can sometimes be a menace to drivers as he zigzags through traffic while trying to sell his newspapers to his customers, who buy from him every week. Selling newspapers on the street, he says, is “a hell of a job”, and not as easy as it may seem.

The family members of a wellknown welder in Musina, Mr Isaac Musekwa, are appealing to the public to help them locate their beloved family member who disappeared without trace last month.

Musekwa (53) is short, lightskinned and has dreadlocks. He was last seen on Thursday, 12 May, wearing blue jeans and a khaki jacket.

According to his sister, Ms Damarise Musekwa, her brother lived alone in Campbell, Musina.

She said that he had called the neighbours the night before he disappeared (11 May) and told them that a lot of people were in his yard who wanted to fight with him. “When the neighbours arrived, the yard was empty and there was no sign of people there.

The neighbours convinced him to come and sleep at their house and he agreed,” she said.

At around 04:00 on the morning of 12 May, Isaac apparently woke his neighbours up and asked them to unlock the door, so that he could go home. “It seems he never went home because he met a relative in the early hours of that morning who was on his way to work. My brother told the relative that he left home because there were people who wanted to fight with him, and he was carrying a golf stick. That was the last time he was seen by anyone. Having been part of the show and having listened to the comments made by listeners, coupled with my personal experience, I have had my eyes opened to the difficulties that young couples are facing and experiencing. Some of them have good intentions but fail to make their relationships work.

A relationship is supposed to be fun, loving, meaningful and empowering, but some experience the exact opposite of what they had anticipated when they walked into the relationship.

I seriously doubt that there is anyone who enters a relationship with the sole aim of getting hurt, betrayed, lied to, cheated on, broken apart, put into debt or depression or, worst of

I have a few recommendations that I would like to share with any youth who wants to pursue a serious relationship. I believe that one of the best decisions you can make is finding and choosing the right partner.

It does matter who your partner is. These principles also apply to those who are already married.

Have a vision Love alone is not enough.

You need to know where you are both going and what it is you need to do to get there.

Be equally committed to your relationship goals. Do not take each other for granted.

Support one another Life always presents bad and good times. It’s fulfilling to know that you have someone who will always be present during good and bad times; someone who can always offer both hard and wise advice out of love. Your partner should encourage you to be a better version of yourself. Be intentionally and wholeheartedly available and supportive to your partner, especially when they are involved in activities that make them happy.

Be advisable Be careful of a partner or potential partner who always refuses wise counsel. Watch out for a partner or potential partner who makes decisions out of anger and has no regard for the way other people feel about their actions. If you have a partner like that, please voice it out and find a way to stop it from happening again.

You can resolve it between yourselves or consult a wise third party. Be careful of taking advice from friends who are scared of you, or those who cannot be honest with you, especially when you are wrong.

Beware of a wasteful spender (money waster) Money does not grow on trees. Here you need to check whether or not your partner or potential partner enjoys spending money recklessly on useless things. If they don’t, you are safe. If they have a bad philosophy on money, please deal with it as early as possible.

Make sure you talk about it.

If they are frugal or are a careful spender, or have an investment mentality, or spend on things that bring about a good return, learn from them.

Feud at Munna Ndi Nnyi continues

By Elmon Tshikhudo Munna Ndi Nnyi Men’s Forum’s focus seems to have shifted somewhat from assisting the community to a tug of war between its founder, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, and the women of Phodzo Community Organisation, who have their own offices at Munna Ndi Nnyi. Some of these women also work for Munna Ndi Nnyi.

The bone of contention appears to be around the right to occupy and use the offices after mysterious goings-on occurred recently.

In early May this year, one of the women, while cleaning the yard, claimed having discovered muti buried at different spots around the premises. She showed the strange findings to her co-workers, and they accused Mufunwaini of being behind them. Counter accusations of witchcraft started to fly between them and Mufunwaini. They claimed

that he was trying to get rid of them, while he was convinced that they were trying to chase him out of the organisation he built.

As if the drama was not enough, when the woman arrived at the offices of Phodzo Community Organisation on Wednesday, 25 May, they were met by chaos. Electrical plugs had been cut, the refrigerator turned upside down and a big panga left lying in the building. As the doors were not broken, the women believed that the suspect/s must have used spare keys to gain entry, which immediately convinced them that this was an inside job.

This war over occupancy continued on Tuesday, 31 May, when the women were completely locked out of the premises, with the main gate to the premises under lock and key. They could not gain entry to the premises and opted to sit in front of the gate without working the whole day.

Mufunwaini said that the gate was locked for security

reasons as the offices had just been burgled and the police were still conducting investigations. “We have to give the police space to conduct their investigations. I even informed the women of this decision,” he said.

The women, however, were not convinced of Mufunwaini’s intentions, saying that when the police had come to work on the scene on the Saturday (28 May), they had opened the building for them. The women say they also used their office on Monday (30th), which made no sense as to why Mufunwaini had locked them out on Tuesday (31st).

“This has to do with the dispute between Dr Mufunwaini and us over the right to use the offices. We will sit here until he opens the gate and lets us do our normal work. We belong here and we are going nowhere,” the women said.

Mufunwaini has since opened a case of assault after allegedly being threatened by a man working with the women.

Mabirimisa children fight over late father’s estate

By Kaizer Nengovhela The fight between the Mabirimisa children over the assets of their late father, bus owner Denga Mudzielwane Josiah Mabirimisa of Mabirimisa Bus Services, appears to be far from over.

When Mr Mabirimisa died in April 1998, he left many children behind from his three wives, who all feel that they were entitled to a share of their late father’s estate. However, things became heated within the family when the children realised that their father’s surviving spouse had been made the sole beneficiary of all his assets, including the proceeds of life insurance policies.

Azwihangwisi Elisana Mabirimisa, one of the deceased’s daughters, was very upset that they could not access their father’s assets because their brother, Tshililo Arnold Mabirimisa, who is the son of the late Mabirimisa’s surviving wife (who is the sole beneficiary of the estate) claimed everything.

“As his legitimate children, we also want a share of our father’s estate, but our brother Arnold excluded us. We went to the Thohoyandou High Court, only to discover that we were not included in the estate and decided

to contest his (Arnold’s) letter of executorship and everything was put on hold,” she said.

“We are all born in wedlock, but our brother wants to take everything from us. My dad left a lot of wealth, including properties, cattle, policies, goats, orchards, a Mercedes Benz, a tractor, money and buses. I know this because we were a part of his family. Our mothers were also married to him, so all of this belongs to all of his children.”

She said that they had been suffering since her dad had died and had become poor. “It shouldn’t be like this because my father left us some wealth, which we cannot access because of our brother,” said Elisana. She has vowed to fight to the bitter end to ensure they all get their rightful share of their father’s assets.

When asked for comment, Arnold Mabirimisa said that his brothers and sisters were the ones who chose to deal with the issue through the court. “We respect and abide by my father’s choice; therefore, we cannot comment on the merits of the issue, which is pending before a court of law for determination,” he said. The family members are currently still waiting for a date when the matter can be heard in the High Court.

DPP to make a decision

By Silas Nduvheni The application that Magistrate Rendani Netshiunda and state prosecutor Mashudu Nekhumbe from the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court recuse themselves from the SAMWU murder trial was withdrawn by the accused’s legal representative, Advocate Tshifhiwa Matodzi, on Monday, 6 June.

On 30 May, Matodzi filed papers applying for Netshiunda and Nekhumbe to recuse themselves from the case, so that his clients, the Radzuma brothers, “could have a fair trial”. Judge Netshiunda set the date for judgement on this matter to 6 June, but on the day that the matter would have been heard, Matodzi told the court that he did not want to apply for the motion anymore as both Netshiunda and Nekhumbe are also prosecuting another case that involves the Radzuma brothers.

Magistrate Netshiunda postponed the case to 27 July, for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to finally come to a decision on the matter.

Addressing the crowd outside the court, Ms Elelwani Mani, who represents the families of the two slain officials, said they welcomed the postponement of the case as this meant that the State felt they still needed to investigate certain things before the matter went to trial.

Advocate Matodzi warned the court that, should that date come and the DPP had still not come up with the ballistic evidence on the matter, they would argue for the case to be struck off the roll as it has been delayed on too many occasions.

Mapfumo in turn thanked Vhamusanda Matsila for his great generosity. “I feel honoured, and I want to say thank you so much for your willingness to make me a part of your people. Really, I appreciate it,” he said.

When Covid-19 hit the world, this created many setbacks for the majority of South Africans. For Chief Steven Tshimedzambeu Tshivhase and his wife, Tintswalo Mathebula-Tshivhase, however, the opposite was true as the hard lockdown with all its restrictions provided them both with the opportunity to register for their post-graduate diplomas in business management.

Even though this meant many late nights studying, the couple, who hail from Vhufuli outside Thohoyandou, deemed this effort worth it when they finally graduated from the Management College of Southern Africa (MANCOSA) in Cape Town on 13 May 2022.

Steven is an area coverage manager at Absa who manages business banking, private wealth banking and public sector business in the province.

Tintswalo is an executive financial planner at Standard Bank who looks after clients within the Makhado and Musina municipalities.

For Steven, sharing the same stage and receiving the same qualifications as his wife was the most fulfilling moment of his life. “The feeling was out of this world. It was our proudest moment as a family. We have a lot of other banking, financial and business qualifications, but this one was special because we were competing with each other, and we both made it to the end goal. This should be a lesson to other couples that,

with the support from one another, families can set goals and jointly achieve them. We encourage couples to equip themselves educationally for this ever-changing world.

Young couples, especially, must make time to study while their brains are still fresh, because it might become very difficult to concentrate on their books when they get older.”

He explains how the hard lockdown positively contributed to their success: “It was not easy, but our eagerness and hunger to improve our business and financial knowledge drove us. Our family and work life has always been our main priorities, and we made sure it was not affected by our studies. We had to study until late at night, and we took advantage of the social restrictions during the hard lockdown. We felt that sitting at home and doing nothing

would not benefit our lives. The lockdown allowed us more time to attend virtual classes, work on our assignments timeously, and to consult with lecturers.

We took advantage of the extra time we had on our hands and used it to study.”

Obviously over the moon, Tintswalo said: “My husband and I already have our dream jobs, but we are still studying to set a good example to our children and people around us.

Both of us are currently doing our Master of Business Administration (MBA) to empower ourselves educationally. Young couples must keep on improving their qualifications to be able to compete at the highest level of the labour market while creating a healthy competition with each other, like my husband and me. They must also do it for their children and future generations.”

Parents also insist that a superintendent, and not the school principal, should be managing the learners who stay at the hostel’s affairs.

They claim that they are being denied entry into the hostel to inspect the conditions their children are being subjected to when they are at school. “Our children complain about the bathrooms, so we (parents) want to see for ourselves, but no-one is allowed to go in. This

is uncalled for,” said another parent, who did not want his name published.

On this the LDBE also denied the allegations that parents were not allowed to enter the hostel. They said that, during the parents’ meeting on 18 April 2022, the parents were told to enter the hostel and see for themselves the vandalism that was taking place, especially at the boys’ hostel.

The parents further claim that they have not seen the school’s budget report for the last two years, on which the LDBE reminded them that meetings and gatherings had been forbidden to take place at schools since the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020. The department said that audited financial reports were available, as these were presented to the school’s newly elected SGB when they resumed their duties.

Chief Balanganani Sikhwivhilu of Ngovhela outside Thohoyandou called on the youth to follow skills programmes offered by accredited colleges near them to address the dire shortage of skills that is dragging the country yet deeper into the unemployment pool.

Sikhwivhilu was speaking during Mvelaphanda Development and Projects Training Centre’s motivational day on Friday, 27 May. The annual event, aimed at motivating new students, was held at the training centre in Tshisahulu village outside Thohoyandou.

Local companies that are

involved in skills training, such as plumbing, bricklaying, motor mechanics and other crafts, were invited to come and boost the morale and motivate the students in their chosen fields.

Mvelaphanda Development and Projects Training Centre’s director, Dr Esther Mushaathama, said for the students to meet the champions of the industry in the different skills programmes they were following, in order to be motivated, was important. “We started this centre many years ago with the disadvantaged rural youth in mind. We are happy that we have since changed many lives and many are now able to sustain themselves. Some have

even created employment for others through the skills they acquired here. We also thank the companies that offer internship opportunities to our students, where they get to experience the work situation in a practical way,” she said.

Guest speaker and academic Ms Azwinndini Magoro encouraged the students to become self-reliant and create their own employment rather than be ordinary job seekers.

“When you graduate here, you will be fully equipped with skills that will allow you to start your companies. Go out there and make the best of contributing to the economic development in your communities and the country,” she said.

Mariadze AstroQuizzers rewarded for their excellent performance

Mariadze Primary School in Ha-Mashau honoured six of their pupils who participated in the online National AstroQuiz in September 2021. A prize-giving event was held for them at the school on Thursday, 2 June, and each child was presented with a trophy, certificate and tablet for outstanding performance in the competition.

AstroQuiz is an astronomy-focused questions-and-answers competition for Grade 7 learners and teachers, which is based on themes around astronomy. Mariadze Primary ended third in the competition.

Tshandama Young Stars and Two for Joy share the glory

By Frank Mavhungu As if they had won a cup final, joy overflowed in the camp of Tshandama Young Stars at the end of their Sasol Women’s League game against Two for Joy FC that was played at the Tshandama Grounds on Sunday.

Although the scoreboard was still blank when the referee blew the final whistle, Young Stars felt they had good reason to rejoice.

According to the managing director of Young Stars, Ms Norah Mudzielwana, the fact that they had managed to hold one of the league title chasers to a draw was an achievement to them.

Two for Joy are lying in the second position on the log standings with 14 points, four behind the pace setters, Lacoste Morning Stars.

On the other hand, Tshandama Young Stars are still to win a league match to date. They are

currently perched at the bottom of the log. Ms Mudzielwana said that holding Two for Joy Ladies to a draw was a giant step in the right direction for her team. Tshandama Young Stars’ next fixture will be against Sisters FC at the same venue on Saturday afternoon.

Their game against Two for Joy on Sunday was a thriller from the onset to the end. Both sides had created some scoring chances that had seen the strikers fumbling with the ball at the goal finish. Although Young Stars had played the whole first half with 10 players, following one of their key players’ late arrival, the visitors from Tshirenzheni village in the Nzhelele Valley could not break their rock-solid wall.

The last stanza saw Two for Joy knock on the opposition’s door time after time, with no luck.

By Frank Mavhungu Lukau Hot Aces secured a place in the quarter-final round of the Nwali Soccer Tournament after beating Muhuyu Copper Stars 1-0 in their opening match that was played at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds on Sunday morning.

Copper Stars were unstoppable throughout the first half. Realising that for them to contain Stars’ dribbling wizards was difficult, Aces decided to abandon their positions and packed themselves at the back and relied on counter-attacks.

They threatened to score in the 24th minute when their Rastafarian striker, Livhuwani Sithole, received a neat pass from Pfariso Ramarumo and unleashed a powerful ground cutter from the 20-metre area.

That was a wakeup call to Copper Stars’ midfielders. They initiated some promising moves from the middle of the park,
