Angs na skote klap Deur Jo Robinson

Grootskaalse paniek het verlede Woensdag geheers by Makhado Crossing toe verskeie skote afgevuur is tydens ‘n gewapende roof by Pick n Pay. Omstreeks 09:00 het ‘n man by Pick n Pay ingestap en homself voorgedoen as ‘n kliënt.

Dit was die geval by die nabygeleë Makhado Good Health Apteek, waar assistent aptekers mnre.

Three in court over explosives in truck Court News

Buig laag dan klim jy hoog Filippense 2:1-8. Vers 5: Want hierdie gesindheid moet ook in julle wees...

G

The three suspects arrested at the Beit Bridge border post over the weekend after police and customs officials found a large consignment of explosives in the truck they were travelling in all briefly appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. The three - two men, Murino Floyd (26) en Tondorai Munthisi (33), and a woman, the 37-yearold Tichavanwe Supai - were all denied bail and their case was postponed until 13 August, pending further police investigations. The court apperance follows their apprehension during a joint stop-and-search operation that was conducted on Saturday, 4 August, at the border post. Their truck was stopped for scanning purposes and the authorities subsequently recovered 750 explosive blasting caps and three rolls of explosive cabling with an estimated street value of R300 000. “The origin and destination of the explosives are still being deThe explosive found termined,” said provinin the truck. Ahmed Manzoor (left) and Fatima Dawood (right) matriculated from Ridgeway College in 2017 and did not get into medicine during the first round of intakes at the beginning of this year, despite getting straight As in the AS exams. They registered for the BSc programme at UP in the hopes that they could still get into medicine as UP offers space to the top 49 students in the BSc programme after the first semester. These students must achieve an average of 80% or more in the first semester to qualify. Fatima and Ahmed were among the top 49 selected. This brings the total number of Ridgeway’s 2017 matriculants who are studying medicine to four or 10% of the matric group. Photos supplied.

SASSA woes continue as many pensioners still without money beneficiaries have now been paid for the July cycle”. Some unhappy grant beneficiaries disagree, however, and continue to contact the Zoutpansberger seeking help in getting access to their money. Mr Justice Kapara contacted the Zoutpansberger looking for help for his aged mother, pensioner Ms Tovhowani Florah Gabara, who has not been able to draw her pension for either July or August. Kapara is based in Johannesburg and unable to physically come to his mother’s aid right now, while she herself lives out of town and is unable to afford transport back and forth. She informed her son that when she tried to get assistance from the local SASSA office, she was shouted at and told to “Go home, and don’t come back.” The Zoutpansberger shared this information with a Mr Mvhangu, an employee at the SASSA Louis Trichardt branch. While directing the very many people seeking help outside Louis Trichardt’s SASSA offices on 2 August, he stated that people were “keying in the incorrect information at ATMs”, which was con-

The important new finding is that the signature of the PB1 gene of the 1918 virus is identical to that of the classical swine and human H1N1 viruses. Don’t forget to take your cash when leaving the ATM By Jo Robinson

On Tuesday, 31 July, an eagle-eyed employee of FNB Louis Trichardt recognised Mr Roy Saunders from his photograph in an article in the Zoutpansberger of 14 July and realised from looking at CCTV footage that Saunders had left an ATM machine with only his card and not the cash he had withdrawn. Saunders is a pensioner and could not afford going without his pension money. The FNB employee followed the trail and not only recovered the cash, but made sure that she tracked Saunders down and returned his pension withdrawal to him. He was very impressed and relieved and said afterwards: “The bank was very good at following it up on the ATM camera and recovering the money. The bank manager, Joyce, is a very nice lady!” After this incident, more residents shared their experience of the new “card first and cash last” system at FNB ATMs. It now seems easier to forget your cash after getting so used to getting your card last at ATMs. The Zoutpansberger asked for comment from FNB regarding the new system. “FNB was the only bank in South Africa to give our customers their cash first and then the card at our ATMs. All the other banks dispense the card first and then the customer’s cash. This resulted in a large percentage of our customers forgetting their cards inside the ATM. The ATM would then

‘swallow’ the card and place it in a dedicated bin. Thereafter, the card would have to be destroyed according to payments regulations,” said Ms LeeAnne van Zyl, CEO of FNB Points of Presence. This, she said, in turn resulted in a major inconvenience to their customers as customers had to re-order a card and be without a card for the duration of the re-issuance. “The cost and inconvenience associated with re-issuing hundreds of thousands of cards per year impacted our customers directly,” said Van Zyl. When asked what happens to money left behind in an ATM, assuming it is not appropriated by whoever happens to be next in the queue, Van Zyl said that if customers forget to take their cash, the ATM will retract it back into the device and place it in a separate area known as the ‘Retract Bin’. “The ATM then writes that activity to the electronic journal with a certain error code, so when customers contact us to dispute the transaction, we will retrieve the journal and see that the cash was in fact not dispensed but retracted. We can then immediately refund the customer, with minimal inconvenience,” said Van Zyl. In a scenario where money forgotten in the ATM is taken and kept by a bystander, Van Zyl said that in such a case it would be a criminal matter that the customer must report to the police, and that the bank did not have any insurance to cover losses such as these. She shared some safety-conscious tips for using ATMs. When it comes to the PIN, Van Zyl urged clients

to keep it confidential. “Never share it with anyone, not even friends and family; don’t write it down, and don’t make it easy to guess, such as a birth date. When transacting, cover the key pad with your hand - since scammers can place cameras to record what you’re punching in - while standing as close as possible to the ATM and not letting anyone to distract you or stand too close. Do not enter your PIN on a screen that is unfamiliar to you. Carefully read the instructions before transacting,”

5

said Van Zyl. Once cash has been withdrawn, Van Zyl said, immediately place this out of sight. “Avoid handling cash in public view and secure your wallet and handbag before leaving the ATM. Set a realistic daily limit on your banking to protect yourself, should your details be compromised, check your statements regularly and report suspicious transactions immediately … And, of course, don’t forget to take your cash after your card,” said Van Zyl.

OCTOBER WYNAND DU TOIT KOM 4 PRAAT WEER

Hy is tydens ‘n mislukte militêre operasie, Operasie Argon, in Mei 1985 in Angola gevangene geneem.

Both able-bodied and disabled to share track By Jo Robinson

A unique event for both able-bodied and disabled athletes will be hosted at Louis Trichardt High School on Saturday, 8 September. The organising team, Is Ability, says that, first and foremost, this is a fun event for everyone, children and adults. No entry criteria or classification of qualifying times or experience will be needed, and no entry fee will be charged for athletes to participate or for spectators. Participants will also receive a special gift package, which will include a free lunch pack, and refreshments will be sold throughout the day for spectators. Events will include track events such as sprints consisting of 60m, 80m, 100m, 200m, 400m, as well as field events, including shotput and wheelchair shotput, discus, javelin and wheelchair javelin. “We will be honoured with the presence of our very own South African Paralympic sporting hero, Ntando Mahlangu, who will not only DJ the Dancea-thon but will also be competing against all the able-bodied runners who sign up for the exhibition relay race planned for the day,” said Sandy James, one of the organisers of this once-off event. Anyone who would like to run against Ntando is invited to contact any of the organisers listed below. SABC2 will also have a cameraman on site to film the event for part of their Beyond Boundaries series, which

focuses on sports for the disabled. Talent scouts will also be there looking for future champions. As well as the dance-a-thon, a jumping castle will be on site for the little ones. Local clubs for the disabled have also been invited to participate, and a great turnout is anticipated by the local organisers for the event, including Sandy (former principal of the Emmanuel Christian School), Louisa Kirsten (Paralympic Assessor), Adri Theron (Retired Physiotherapist), and Sheryl James (BA Health and Social Sciences), who are working closely with the hosts to bring it all together. Sandy said that Is Ability is a Gauteng-based sports club and academy that caters for able-bodied and disabled athletes alike, both adults and children. “They have a branch called ‘Jumping Kids’, which is a registered non-profit organisation that facilitates the provision of prosthetic limbs for amputees, particularly children, who cannot afford medical assistance. It has facilitated the participation of a number of teams at World Wheelchair and Para-games Ireland. The Is Ability club states that a “disabled athlete does not seek or need pity, or even want to be regarded as disabled, but only the opportunity to participate and function without prejudice in a society where sport is a valuable component, whether it be for competitive purposes or just for recreation and fun,” said Sandy. According to Sandy, a highlight of the day will happen on site when a child who is an amputee will be fitted with a prosthetic limb for the first time as a “demonstration – inspiration” and will then participate competitively as part of the Jumping Kids initiative. “If anyone in the community feels inspired to assist in any way, be it financially or as voluntary hands and feet, please contact one of us. Hopefully this could be the beginning of many future events, including different sports, where able-bodied and disabled people can participate together,” said Sandy. Athletes are requested to arrive at 08:00 to register. The event will take place from 08:30 until 14:30. For more information, phone Sandy (084 506 3333), Sheryl James (061 023 0771), Louisa Kirsten (083 361 5983) or email them at ecs@live. co.za. This event is being held in partnership with the Makhado Municipality and the full support of the mayor Shonisani Sinyosi.

Me. Me.
