WILDLIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF CARL OLSEN

One of the arresting things about so many of Carl Olsen’s varied, gorgeous and surprising wildlife images is that little bit of eye contact, the impression of the subject’s acknowledgement of the viewer. It can be fleeting, a sideways glance, or prolonged, even challenging. This issue’s cover photograph of the fawn is one of Olsen’s most iconic, with those huge eyes, alert, and searching . . . n Olsen’s words: “I don’t use blinds, and as I strive to avoid influencing my subjects, I never put down bait or offer food. However, working only from available cover means eye contact is often unavoidable. At first I considered this undesirable, detracting from the ‘naturalness’ of the shot. But over time I came to realize that many of these ʻ’eye-contact’ shots were some of the most revealing. The eyes truly are the windows of the soul, and never more so than with animals.” What we see in this eye contact is that we’re creatures too, mysterious, unpredictable, possibly dangerous, possibly benign, possibly even allies. We see ourselves assessed. Since Olsen retired from his job at Port Mellon, the photography that started as a casual hobby has become a passion and a calling. And it is clear that he loves his subjects and the diversity of wildlife that can be accessed relatively easily here on the Coast. “As a young child in London, England,” he says, “the only wild animals I knew were the magical creatures of my favourite storybooks.” The forests and shores of the Sunshine Coast provide Olsen with a wide and extraordinarily appealing selection of subjects such as sea lions, herons, otters, deer, bear, raptors, and sea birds. Photographing wildlife means long, patient (or notso-patient) hours, standing still as a stone, often in rain or wind. Sometimes even that yields nothing great. And sometimes a shot literally jumps out at the camera. Like that fawn photo: “I was hurrying back to the Secret Beach steps after photographing seabirds and was about to climb over a downed cedar when this fawn leapt up just in front of me (I nearly tripped over it!) and over the tree trunk. It stopped a few feet ahead of me and jumped straight up and down a few times—an instinctive display of health that discourages predators. I took several shots as soon as it stopped jumping. Apparently its mother had left it hidden . . .” While he describes learning as an “endless process,“ Olsen sometimes shakes his head when thinking of some of his early attempts. He finds diligence incredibly rewarding and recalls several “peak” experiences: “. . . the fearless golden eagle that let me approach to within six feet, the curious coyote pup that stole up to me as I hid (so I thought!) in the long grass, or the brave merlin I observed risking her life to draw a barred owl away from her nest. Those childhood storybooks were right, after all. Wildlife is indeed magical.”

oberts Creek Village is becoming an even better place to nose around for the afternoon. The café and restaurant are generally open. That’s right: open! Even in winter. The eclectic shops lining the boardwalk and square offer interesting browsing and often have exactly what you’re looking for, right there. The Rusty Hinge is a new garden shop beside the natural foods store. Owner Rhoda Baxter waited a long time to claim this terrific location in the heart of the Creek.

RUS TY HINGE WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE

The Rusty Hinge is a satisfying little microcosm of our Roberts Creek gardens: starter kits and seeds, succulents and secateurs, bird feeders and bee houses. The shop is decorated with wonderful old rusty implements, things like a fabulous eight-pronged pitchfork and an ancient wooden wheelbarrow. These came from local garden sheds, some donated and some in exchange for gift certificates. They give the shop the feel of a community project, just like the gardens and beds lining the walkways outside. You’ll find unique and locally (Vancouver) crafted items like “treedrops.” These are utterly charming teardrop-shaped little habitats and feeders made from reclaimed cedar. Lightweight yet durable, these are year-round tree ornaments that are priced just right for gifts. But you’ll want one for yourself. Baxter has been approached many times to carry the work of local artists and craftspeople, and she has been cautious and selective about what she offers. “This past month,” she says, “I have the first two artists I said yes to: Joelly, who does beautiful botanical paintings, and Donna Stewart, an incredibly talented artist who incorporates concrete in her medium. I also now have a few pieces of James Bennett’s pottery.” The shelves have lots of plants, a fine assortment of wee cacti, and a heavenly Madagascan Jasmine with fat, creamy white blossoms that fill the room with their sugary scent. And fun seasonal surprises: “In April I will again have butterflies, which I get in as caterpillars and watch them go through the metamorphosis to become Painted Lady butterflies.” She likes how people with kids will pop in and check on them. Baxter owned a flower shop in Yaletown at one time, but likes that in this shop almost everything is alive and planted, not cut.

RUSTY HINGE IS LOCATED AT 1059 ROBERTS CREEK ROAD, ROBERTS CREEK.

THE

WOOD ART o f PAT R I C K S K I D D

he blues! Cobalt blue, navy blue, a greyish northern sea blue, teal, and turquoise. Patrick Skidd is displaying the colourful veneers upon which he bases his woodcarving art. The colours are vibrant and deep, but they still lose the contest with Skidd’s eyes, which are the brightest blue I have ever seen. And today his eyes have a particular gleam, because he’s talking about what he loves to do. “There‘s no work in this at all. It’s nothing but fun.” Skidd’s delightful wood and veneer art is whimsical and masterful. If these were paintings, they’d be impressive in the exuberant yet careful colour selection, the composition. But this is 3-D. And so add in shape, curve, and shadow, and the complexity of the colour decisions when that colour isn’t just dabbed on but planned and managed much earlier in the process.

WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE

12

Skidd particularly likes working with the texture of the wood for the backdrop of his pieces. He gets excited when the grain of the wood alone can provide him with the impression of water. Birdseye Maple and Sycamore are especially prized. Lovely, colourful pressed-veneer tropical fish are affixed to these bases in shimmering schools. This work is inspired by his many trips to Costa Rica. He enthuses, “Nature does a spectacular job in providing the raw materials and ideas.” Skidd has just moved house and is unpacking one breathtaking piece after another. Leaning against a wall is a large woodcut composition entitled “The Endurance,” which tells the story of Sir Earnest Shackleton’s voyage to Antarctica. This piece contains at least eighty different types of wood and shows off the natural colour and texture of each. I can’t take notes quickly enough, so Skidd provides me with a list. You could compose a poem from the names: Mahogany Silky Oak, Purple Heart, Pine, Bloodwood, Hawthorn, Sumac, Walnut, Birdseye Maple, Arbutus burl . . .

“ There‘s no work in this at all. It’s nothing but fun.” Skidd has studied some of our most iconic Canadian artwork and landmarks. On display is his take on Lawren Harris’s “Iceberg, Baffin’s Bay North.” Pieces of coloured veneer are painstakingly pressed together to mimic the colours of the original 1930 painting. These are sanded down into 3-D forms (using a belt sander that runs with an old refrigerator motor bolted to a handmade bench—Skidd is nothing if not resourceful) and composed, just like the original. Only 3-D. But it’s “Percé Rock” that I can’t stop looking at. This is Skidd’s depiction of one of the Quebec Gaspé region’s biggest tourist attractions. The long, smooth shape with a notch on the underside is very like the rock itself and is composed of about 1500 layers and 56 colours of pressed veneer that range from blues to browns to rainbow. There’s even an aurora borealis colour segment. This piece, like all his others, is simply beautiful from every angle. PATRICK SKIDD’S WORK CAN BE FOUND IN GALLERIES FROM NOVA SCOTIA TO SALTSPRING ISLAND. FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL 604.353.9298.

ntimacy, light, connection, visual truth: this will be your wedding day, documented by Maru Photography. Creating photographs that are sensual, artful, soul-stirring, igniting memories, drives Kim’s passion. The earthy palate, organic beauty, and romance in her photos create ambiance, and the use of atmospheric light applies grace. Kim’s creative expertise allows her to elevate the story of your wedding in a meaningful way, and her documentary style entraps the day, to be relived again and again.

Finding a fine-art, photojournalistic photographer for her own wedding was a struggle, leaving Kim knowing she needed to start her own photography business. Starting in travel and photojournalism, she fell in love with the ability of a photograph to tell a story. As a trained psychologist, her understanding of human interaction gives her the unique ability to manoeuvre wedding-day exuberance without getting caught up in the anxiety. She has practised the art of anticipating special moments and will be ready to capture yours. Twenty years behind a camera has provided an ability to see with one eye through the lens while the other eye constantly scans the room for the next meaningful shot. She is a consummate professional, forever passionate about documenting a love story.

“We trust you to create the right story that represents who we are,” is a common sentiment clients express, entrusting Kim to build the story that best shows the unique aspects that made their wedding day special. Kim handcrafts her final images with the same technical beauty that she uses behind the lens, elevating the personal aspects of the photos to highlight the emotion and story of the couple. Maru Photography continues to grow organically. Photographing a commercial wedding shoot in Paris, Kim was in need of models. She put out a request for help from Paris-based wedding planners and surprisingly, not only did she get models, she connected with another artist. Together they created a workshop, L’Artisan, which is now entering its second successful year. Kim’s love of travel has inspired her to take on more destination weddings. With families spread across the world, smaller, intimate ceremonies are being celebrated. Last year took her to Iceland, Germany, and Grand Cayman, as well as to our own magical Sunshine Coast. Kim has created a successful, meaningful business that enjoys a deep connection with her clients and is passionate about documenting the intimate story of a couple’s wedding day. She is fully devoted, heart and soul, into capturing real emotion through true connections: no scripts, loose plans, all soul, all organic. Wherever your wedding takes you, Maru Photography can be there to capture your love story.

LOVE STORY

Kim builds a relationship with her clients from the beginning, making sure she gets to know the couple and their style. Being honest and educating couples allows them to be a part of the process and to make informed decisions about how their memories will be represented. Emphasis is placed on a conservative plan, thus creating space to reduce inevitable weddingday stresses and allowing the loving emotions of the couple to shine through. She values how important the photographer’s role is to a couple and connects to that spirit. Conscious of the couple’s wedding-day vision, she sets about to capture their story without having to use a script, rather using real emotions created through authentic moments.

“THIS IS WHO I AM: THE POLITICS OF THE QUEER BODY” SHERYL MCDOUGAL & NOEL SILVER May 30–June 24

This exhibition reflects the artists’ various avenues of inspiration and exploration of colour, shape and imagery.

Using the human body as a point of departure, their bold paintings explore themes of sexuality and identity. When being “other” remains, in and of itself a political act, what does it mean to be queer in 2018?

“SLICE OF LIFE” LIFE DRAWING GROUP SHOW April 4–29

“ABSTRACTS EXPOSED” KATHERINE JOHNSTON June 27–July22

“THIS EARTH” JEN DRYSDALE May 2–27

“ELEMENTAL DETAIL” ALANNA WOOD June 27–July22

The exhibition marks the Life Drawing Group’s 33rd Anniversary. Drawings from 2015–2018 are featured in various mediums.

“I primarily use acrylic and oil paint but recently began experimenting with cold wax and oils. Some new themes emerging for me through the use of cold wax and oil are the portrait, imagination and the unconscious.”

THE BUSINESS OF ART

A series of Sunday morning lectures and workshops for artists, performers, and arts organizations on the Coast, with funding from the BC Arts Council and the Province of BC. Sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Credit Union.

“Colour, texture and mark-making often unite with a memory of landscapes observed, or a piece of classical or upbeat music playing in the background.”

This exhibition of small-format abstract work is an exploration in conveying detailed visual information through a variety of media, some of which are quite unconventional.

SPRING AUTHOR SERIES ART & THE DOCUMENTARY The Sunshine Coast Arts Council presents authors Bill Richardson, Claudia Casper, and Robert Moor in this Spring series of author readings.

Anyone who’s attended a big film festival in the city knows that deciding what to see can be agonizing! Decisions have been made for you with the Sunday Film Series’ impressive line-up. Guest speakers and sponsors make this series convivial, mind-expanding and enjoyable.

Making customers happy in this complex, sensitive, intimate business is a pretty tall order. It will take you a while to read through the testimonials on Finlayson’s Goldsmiths website. They go on and on. Over and over, customers seem to realize how difficult they’ve been, and cannot say enough about how delighted they are with the process and the result. A visit to the Finlayson home studio on the outskirts of Gibsons helps us understand why customers come away so happy. Glance around the workshop and you might notice that the tools of the trade have hardly changed at all in hundreds of years. Here Ian Finlayson creates and Darcy Gertz repairs and sizes. They’ve been working together for years. Ian is a master goldsmith with forty years of experience. His early apprenticeship with the renowned Swiss jeweller Toni Cavelti has given him a solid background in the dying art of making jewelry using traditional European techniques. Personable and with a shy Sam Elliot smile, Ian has seen lots of trends in this business. These days, with gold prices so high, many customers come in with inherited and older jewelry or even coins they want restyled, or just to trade in for cash. “Beware of the travelling gold buyers!” cautions Ian. Best to put your trust in an established business.

hen it comes to jewelry, we want what we want. There are few other possessions that encourage us to be so exacting. We want beauty, symbolism, and timelessness. We want durability and wearability. We want quality and purity. We want originality. We want something that says “me” or “him/her.” We want it to express the biggest emotions we are capable of. And we want it in a very small box.

Across the foyer is a bright and spacious office and display room where customers chat with Ian’s daughter, Lesley, about their needs. Leslie is the designer, but creative muscle is only a part of the process. It’s her job to ask the right questions and find out what people really want. She laughingly describes it as “interrogation.” It calls for a lot of educating, sensitivity, and problem-solving. The possibilities for just the simple band of a ring can be absolutely daunting: flat, rounded, brushed, thin, wide. I am shown several particularly lovely “scrollwork” bands that are intricate and organic and painstakingly handcrafted. People who do heavier work with their hands can get custom “safety releases” on their ring bands. Older people with swollen knuckles are easily accommodated. Lesley recalls some unusual orders too. “We’ve made custom 18K fly-fishing hooks, a set of silver and gold cribbage pegs . . . A few times we’ve had fishermen bring in rustic pearls they’ve found in local shellfish.” People buy custom jewelry for every reason under the sun: engagements and graduations, babies and accomplishments. More somber reasons too. Sometimes a divorced or widowed woman will design and buy a ring for herself. And while anything goes, some of the stereotypes generally hold true. So much so that the Finlaysons had a gift certificate made up to reward men for not waiting until the last minute to order: “Well done, Sir! You thought ahead! You anticipated an important gift-giving occasion well in advance, giving your jeweller time to meet your needs, ” etc. The certificate entitles the bearer to ten percent off his next purchase. A few customers came by while I was there, and each was greeted by name, like family. Each person had a story, and some unique and beloved Finlayson jewelry they were proud to show to me.

t is said that new folks get hopelessly lost in the Pender Harbour area unless they’ve had a tour by boat to get a feel for the myriad waterways. Getting around by car with the sea on the right, no, the left, around the peninsula (but wait, didn’t we just drive over a bridge? Is this an island? Is that salt water or a lake? Are we still driving south? How is that possible?) and lakes can be really challenging at first. The newest way to get your bearings is to see some aerial photos of the area. It is hard to remember how properties sold or any of us found our way around before we could benefit from this eagle’s-eye view. And the aerial shots are breathtaking! We instantly see how blessed we are. So much forest, clean, fresh water, interesting and pristine shorelines! And when we feel stressed and it seems like troublesome humans are just everywhere, we are reminded that, in the Pacific Northwest at least, Nature still has the upper hand. Laurent Wiese has all the qualifications and expertise in aerial photography to showcase our area to full advantage. He has a background as an aircraft maintenance engineer, he holds a pilot’s licence, and he has a passion for photography. His company, Skydrone Aerial Photography, offers a wide range of services in our area.

“My aerial photography offers a very cost-effective alternative to manned aircraft aerial photography for a variety of applications in the fields of real estate, building site progress reports, 3D mapping/orthophotogrammetry, SAR, environmental planning and monitoring, agriculture, forestry, tourism, and archeology, among others. We also provide general photo and video services—the sky is the limit.” Above is an example. It’s the Whisky Slough area, taken facing roughly north. In this shot we’re above Gerran’s Bay. That’s the Whiskey Slough government dock on the left. You see Dusenbury Island a little to the right, and tucked behind it are Calder Island and Mary Islet. The peaks at the back, from right to left, are Daniel Hill, Harbour Peak, and Pender Hill. Garden Bay Estates is right behind Mary Islet, and little Tranquility Islet is tucked in near the shore to the left of Dusenbury. So many points of interest in such a small area. How lucky are we?

Do you know where this is?

ooking to unwind? Reconnect with nature? Locals know there is no better place than the Sunshine Coast. The unique modes of transportation to the Coast set the stage for the beautiful adventure that awaits. Whether by sea or by air, you immediately start to take in the serenity; your pace slows, your stresses release, and your spirit expands. From mossy forests, hidden hikes, and beach gems that dot the rugged coastline to the luxury lodges, fishing charters, and camping, the Sunshine Coast is the place to play, relax, and fuel your adventurous spirit.

28

Only forty minutes from Vancouver by ferry or twenty minutes by seaplane, you can experience the rush of downhill speeding on your mountain bike, trail running, ATVing or climbing to the peak of mountaintop and being rewarded with views of pure, raw, natural beauty. While away the warm summer days in one of the many tranquil campgrounds for tents or RVs. Take a splash in a pristine lake. Lakes (both motorized and non-) are stocked with trout so you can enjoy a day on the water and perhaps catch your dinner all in one place. Yearround sport fishing charters are available for hire. You can also discover the marine wildlife and fauna via an ecological boat tour. Not in the mood to catch your own food? Just head down to one of the markets and pick up something for the barbecue or an alfresco picnic. Alternatively, many restaurants boast highly skilled chefs just waiting to provide you with a meal to remember. Don’t know where to start? Have you seen the bioluminescence that lights up the ocean at night? Join one of the many adventure companies waiting to help you explore all the Sunshine Coast has to offer. Kayaks, paddleboards, canoes—you name it and you can rent it. Visiting the Sunshine Coast allows the stresses of everyday life to disappear into the surrounding ocean and forests. As you enter the ferry or seaplane, crossing back over the beautiful waters for your homeward journey, you will feel restored and inspired. The Sunshine Coast: magic lives here. écor. What does it do for us? Does it just tyrannize us with prescribed colour, rigid style, and fussy objects that we have to clean around? No. Not when employed intelligently and with a sense of fun. It can define our space, set a tone, speak of our priorities. It lets us work, relax, dine, and entertain in a setting of comfort, functionality, coherence, and inspiration. At its best, décor grows naturally out of our lifestyle. But most of us need a little help. At Cur8ed Home, owners Ernie and Christine Turner have simplified the process by using their experience and taste to fill their store with only beautiful, functional, affordable items to choose from. And if you still need help, you can make an appointment for a complimentary showroom consultation with Tara de Grandmaison, of De Grandmaison Interiors. Tara will help you find your unique décor path. Christine Turner knows that we on the Coast are price sensitive and bargain savvy: “I’m always looking for items at great prices that we can pass on to our customers, so my best sources are auction houses and suppliers of as-is and last-of items. I love sourcing unique items and especially great pieces that resemble high-end items but at a fraction of the cost, as in the many magazines that feature ‘the look for less.’

spring 2018

31

Christine understands, too, that every home is unique. We all have items that we have moved and kept with us for years: heirlooms, travel mementos, a contemporary piece that never loses its appeal, or something quirky that we just never seem to outgrow. Turner has the same wide range of appeal in her showroom.

Sometimes we just need to visit homes, showrooms, and stores to see what speaks to us. Embellish Emporium is a gift and décor store also owned by Turner. The displays there are arranged according to current trends with the aim of inspiring visitors to think about articulating their own style. Some of us are still daunted. And while there are many gorgeous homes on the Coast, and lots of homeowners with talent for and a delight in decorating, a good number of us are so busy with all the outdoor activities on offer here, raising families, pursuing creative endeavours, and working one or more jobs, that the idea of beautifying a living space seems overwhelming. Turner understands:

CUR8ED HOME

“The showroom is an eclectic but carefully selected blend of décor and furniture from our suppliers, mixed with a few interesting or unique vintage pieces. It’s actually reminiscent of the way most people curate items for their own homes, mixing new pieces with cherished items they’ve had for years. It’s that mix that makes each home as unique as an individual’s personality.”

“Decorating or creating a cohesive style for your home need not be a daunting task. When you surround yourself with pieces that you love, mixed with those that have a function, you will create a comfortable living space that can actually reduce stress. When everything is in its place, you will have that ‘Ahhhh’ sensation when you get time to relax from life’s demands.” CUR8ED HOME IS LOCATED AT 106 - 1161 SUNSHINE COAST HIGHWAY IN GIBSONS. Preservative-free, professional quality, and only available but from your eye care provider. Safe for children and pregnant or nursing mothers, these drops leave your eyes refreshed without rebound redness. Formulas also available for contact lens wearers.
