FALL SERVICE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

SHOULD I CHANGE THE OIL IN THE SPRING OR FALL?
Engine oil and filters must be changed before storage because of the acids that develop in the oil, which can attach to bearings. Also, since marine engines run cooler than automotive engines, moister/condensation stays in the oil instead of evaporating. For these reasons, manufacturers recommend changing the oil before sitting for a prolonged period of time.
SHOULD I FILL THE TANK OR LEAVE IT EMPTY BEFORE STORING FOR THE WINTER?
When it comes to this issue you can find arguments that go both ways. The bottom line? You should always stabilize the fuel to avoid residue buildup that clogs carburetors and fuel injectors. AWS also recommends fuel stabilizer with ethanol treatment to combat new issues in the marine industry due to the increase in ethanol in gasoline found at the pump.
SHOULD I TRAILER MY BOAT WITH THE TOWER UP OR DOWN?
Always trailer your boat with the tower up position. This locks the tower in place and eliminates towing vibration. We also recommend taking any mooring covers off before transporting your boat down the road.
Steve Damman Meet Steve Damman, Steve grew up enjoying boating and water sports lifestyle in TC. While attending GVSU he joined our staff at AWS working his way thru school. Upon graduating with a degree in business and marketing Steve joined AWS taking the position of managing our online e-commerce business. HOW DO I REMOVE A YELLOW STAIN FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY BOAT?
Use a cleaner like Zap or Zing to remove the yellowing discoloration below the waterline of your boat. For hard water spots pick up a bottle of Meguiar’s Hard Water Spot Removal. It easily and gently removes water spots from fiberglass, stainless steel, windshields, and more. Wash and rinse the boat then follow up with a quality marine wax.
WHAT CLEANERS DO YOU SUGGEST TO CLEAN THE INSIDE OF MY BOAT?
A good marine grade all-purpose cleaner works great for removing mildew stains, fly specks, ground in dirt, or grease. After a thorough cleaning, finish with a coat of 303 protectant. This will help prolong the life of your interior by protecting from UV rays and keeping future stains from setting into the vinyl.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO DO IN THE FALL TO MAKE SURE MY BOAT IS READY FOR THE SPRING?
Manufacturers recommend an annual service inspection to insure years of troublefree operation. Simple issues like a worn out impeller, water in one of the fluids or an out-of-alignment drive coupler can cost thousands in repairs if not attended to in a timely manor. Our AWS winterize packages include preparing your boat for the winter months, an oil change, an inspection to ensure your boat is ready for the spring, and a free summarize service to check your boat again in the spring and verify it is ready for the lake when you arrive to pick it up!

Brett Dense Brett joined the AWS team at the age of 15 as a member of our tournament wakeboard team. Brett was a CWB regional factory team rider and also worked at the Hudsonville pro shop before receiving a degree in accounting from Michigan State and a Masters in Taxation from San Diego State. Brett spent the last few years working as a CPA and recently relocated to Traverse City to help manage the Traverse City location.
