INTRODUCCIÓN

Es al llegar a San Juan Chamula cuando tomo conciencia de mi proyecto fotográfico, un

pueblo que da la causalidad de que esá en fiestas. Hay muchas definiciones de causalidad, una sería el principio u origen de algo; otra que las cosas no ocurren de manera aislada, sino que están unidas unas con otras.

En este pueblo, donde la tensión se puede cortar con cuchillo, me embriago sacando fotos.

Es el comienzo de un viaje catártico que me catapulta a las negruras del alma, donde se mezclan los posos de la cultura colonizadora, los rituales caníbales, los sentimientos latentes de venganza, la opresión del pueblo que se ve eternamente sometido, la violencia, el recelo...

La iglesia que preside la plaza de San Antonio Chamula es el templo religioso más extraño

que jamás haya visto. El ambiente dentro de la iglesia está enrarecido, viciado diría yo: el humo y olor a copal lo invade todo, los bancos han sido retirados y el templo se presenta diáfano de mobiliario. La gente está en el suelo pidiendo deseos, en grupos, sentados o arrodillados; hay músicos con guitarras y otros instrumentos; el suelo está plagado de hojas y ramas cortadas. Las dos paredes que recorren la nave están presididas con representaciones de santos a tamaño natural encerrados en vitrinas, a modo de tétrico museo de cera. Multitud de finas velas en el suelo emiten luces trémulas y mortecinas, apagándose y volviendose a encender por los presentes, goteando cera y marcando el suelo. El humo se confunde con el del copal, que junto con la acumulación de energías de los allí presentes, resulta en una ambiente tan oprimente que tengo que salir para no morir de un mal hechizo o un estacazo en la cabeza. Más tarde me cuentan que la gente allí dentro realiza rituales y sacrificios animales para obtener esto y lo otro. Estoy ante un templo cristiano donde se realizan rituales animistas, dos culturas y tradiciones mezcladas y complementadas.

Así que me encuentro fuera de la iglesia, recuperándome de mi propio viaje psiquedélico,

cuando empiezan las detonaciones de pólvora y el toro humano embolado. La plaza se llena de chiquillos disfrazados con caretas monstruosas. Me lanzo a disparar con mi Pentax, primero con película en blanco y negro y luego con diapositiva color.

Este es el principio de mi viaje por México, tras ello todo lo veo con otros ojos, continua-

mente preguntándome si es cierto lo que veo o es producto de mi imaginación.

INTRODUCTION

It is when I arrive to San Juan Chamula that I become aware of my photographic project, a

town that gives the causality that it is at parties. There are many definitions of causality, one would be the beginning or origin of something; another that things do not happen in isolation, but are linked with each other.

In this town, where the tension can be cut with a knife, I get drunk taking pictures. It is the

beginning of a cathartic journey that catapults me to the blackness of the soul, where there is a mix of colonizing culture and cannibalistic rituals, the latent feelings of revenge, the oppression of the people that is eternally subjugated, the violence, the suspicion...

The church that presides over San Antonio Chamula´s square is the strangest religious

temple I have ever seen. The atmosphere inside the church is rarefied, vitiated I would say: the smoke and smell of copal invades everything. The banks have been removed and the temple is presented diaphanous of furniture. People are on the ground asking desires, in groups, sitting or kneeling; there are musicians with guitars and other instruments and the ground is full of leaves and cut branches. The two walls that cross the nave are presided over with representations of natural size saints locked up in showcases, as a gloomy wax museum. Crowds of thin candles on the floor emit shaky and dim lights, turning off and re-ignited by those present, dripping wax and marking the floor. The smoke is confused with that of the copal, which together with the accumulation of energies of those present, results in such an oppressive environment that I have to leave not to die of a bad spell or a stab in the head. Later they tell me that the people there perform rituals and animal sacrifices to obtain this and that. I am in front of a Christian temple where animistic rituals take place, two cultures mixed and complemented.

So I find myself outside the church, recovering from my own psychedelic trip when the gun-

powder detonations and the fire human bull begin. The square is flled with disguised children on monstrous masks. I start shooting with my Pentax, first with black and white film and then with color slide.

This is the beginning of my trip in Mexico. After this I see everything with different eyes,

continually asking myself if it is true what I see or is the product of my imagination.
