COMFORTABLE AND NATURAL
design concept for a communal living complex, intended to be used by travelling nurses at the christ hospital down the road.
the biome explores the idea of a set of “vertical villages” that face opposite to eachother, with tight, layered circulation to encourage interation between the residents.
the general feeling of the space is light, open, and very connected to the environment, as this would be the opposite experience to what the nurses would experience at long days in the hospital.
the materiality is light, greenhouse-esque and glowing at night, with perforated metal layered on top of thick glass and a mass timber frame and base,

COMPRESSION AND HIERARCHY
design concept for a public restroom and shower space near cincinnati’s findlay market. the concept was derived from the idea of hierarchy of the most public spaces to the most private spaces.
the benches and water fountains are centralized in the space, as the most public and easily accessible area. from there, the restrooms are slightly more transparent in material and higher up, and then the showers are even higher and in it’s own complex, making it the most private space within the restroom
the materiality also reflects the hierarchy of the space, with the restroom being enclosed in slightly spaced out wood beams, and the showers being enclosed in solid concrete

COMPOSITION AND COLLAGE
using an existing 2d geometric painting, several original 2d geometric compositions were iterated. from there, the finalized 2d composition was extruded into a 3d space, using certain concepts such as alcove, threshold, platform and circulation, as well as using general line, plane and volume massing concepts
orthographic drawings were completed by hand, as well as a model made out of museum board and painted basswood sticks

ABOUT THE BEARCAT MARCHING BAND
Founded in 1920 by a small group of engineering students, today the ~250 member marching band contains students from all academic units and is only one of a variety of bands within the comprehensive campus band program. Since 1954, the band has performed the popular CHARGE down the southend steps of historic Nippert Stadium to perform pregame. In 1964, the phrase “The UC Band is Damn Good,” abbreviated TUCBIDG [“tuck-bidge” like bridge without the r] was coined and has been affectionately used ever since by members and fans alike.
The Bearcat Band celebrates 100 years this fall. In recognition of the Bearcat Bands Centennial throughout 2020-21, a “Charge Into the Next Century” campaign for all new wind and percussion instruments is underway. This initiative is supported by gifts to the UC Foundation.
Mr. Christopher Nichter [“Nick-tur”] is serving his fourth year of appointment as Director of Bands at UC. Mr. Nichter was previously the Assistant Director of Bands at West Virginia University, from which he also earned his degrees Bachelor of Music in Education and Master of Music in Conducting. The Associate Director of the Bearcat Bands is Mr. Nicholas Angelis and the Assistant Director is Dr. Krista Mulcahy.
