Growing up in Hawaii, nature has always been one of my first loves. Learning about it through native Hawaiian myths, legends and management has given me an immense appreciation for the ground we walk on and what we see around us. I’ve been fortunate enough to gain insight into other cultural experiences through traveling. I would say these major life experiences for me have shaped who I am today and how my design process works. I enjoy thinking about Indigenous and cultural practices used in ecological systems so that we can work with the land versus thinking of it as something to build on top of. My college career has opened my eyes to many other interests and areas of study that I am passionate about and want to continue to learn more through my professional career. These include climate resilience/ adaptation, green infrastructure design, land reclamation and historic preservation.
I’ve worked in many industries throughout my life and enjoy creating a warm and welcoming environment with my colleagues. I enjoy collaborating with others and learning more through them as well as creating exciting new ideas and things with them. Life is constantly in flux and adapting to quick changes is something I’ve grown very comfortable doing. I am a hard worker and capable of working in different fields. Through the wide range of experiences I’ve had, I can say that I am adept in learning new things quickly and will bring my best effort and attitude in any opportunity I am given.

THE BENCH
Skills: Rhino, AutoCad, woodshop and fabrication experience
“The bench” was initially built to be used at the UW Farm, which lacked a lot of furniture for the employees and visitors that would come occasionally. Through multiple iterations of design, I decided to make the bench simple yet ergonomically correct detailed with small intricacies. White oak was used to ensure sturdiness without the use of reinforcements.

Original rough drafts, mock-ups and process images taken throughout the process of learning how to use tools.

PERMANENT PIT-STOPS
POLLINATOR PIT-STOPS
Skills: QGIS, Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign, Procreate
The Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop Trail unites local parks, swimming areas around Lake Union through a pedestrian and bike-friendly path. While the trail promotes exercise, the trail passes through a majority of urban areas that lack public green space. The goal of these pollinator pit-stops is to bring back native plant and pollinator species along the path. Through intensive plant and pollinator research, I created a simple structure that should be built to house these species according to different site conditions. The structure stays the same while planting changes according to what area of the trail they are located. The pit-stops also unify the trail and create more wayfinding for the trail. This project was a part of a studio discovering how to design impermanent landscapes for permanent means.
Larger plots and more pollinator hotels at permanent installations at parks. Planting depends on site conditions.
PLANTS
SUNNY CONDITIONS: using all flowers mentioned SHADIER CONDITIONS: using more flowering shrubs such as mock orange, serviceberry, red flowering currant
TEMPORARY PIT-STOPS
TYPE 1
GOALS:
+ create spaces for pollinators to inhabit and pollinate within an urban context

+ create spaces for people to learn and interact with pollinators at a smaller scale.
+ increase green space and planted areas around the Cheshiahud loop trail
+ opportunity to create bigger wayfinding/ unification around the Cheshiahud loop trail

+ encourage community engagement through “pollinator installations”

LOGS, TWIGS AND OTHER WOOD MATERIALS WITH HOLES BORED INTO THEM FOR POLLINATORS TO MAKE NESTS
USING DURABLE HARD WOOD FOR HOTEL TO PROTECT POLLINATORS FROM THE ELEMENTS/ DISTURBANCES
Typical pollinator hotel placed around the loop. Planting is specialized according to map. Hotels take a simple form the first year. Artists and community engagement is encouraged to create new pollinator hotels every year.
PLANTS
ex. for bees/ moths: yarrow, aster, coneflower, pearly everlasting
TYPE 2
POLLINATORS (LIKE BUTTERFLIES) ENJOY MAKING NESTS IN BETWEEN GAPS OF STONE/ BRICK
Restoring Seattle Street Strinks for public use. Water from sink creates ideal conditions for butterfly and bird resting. Plants with high watertolerance will be planted near the spout.
PLANTS FOR BUTTERFLIES & BIRDS: Penstemon, delphinium, bee balm
RAIN GARDEN: Tufted Hairgrass, Orange Sedge, Slough Sedge
Site plan, section and seasonal (winter- above, summer- below) vignettes depicting what a permanent pit-stop would look like specifically at South Point Passage Park, one of the local parks connected by the Cheshiahud loop trail.

FRAGMENTATION OF BEERSHEBA
Skills: model-making, Illustrator, Photoshop, Rhino
Inspired by the city of Beersheba, from Italo Calvino’s “Invisible Cities”, this space serves as a gathering area for people with many layers to it. It sits on a partially-remediated site with its northwest corner being the least remediated. Following the gradient of waste remediation, the site becomes more inhabitable, lively and beautiful as one follows it down to its lower areas.
