Welcome to the Shelley Theatre ‘What’s On’ guide for Spring 2020 This is our 10th anniversary year since our very first performance in October 2010.

I love to look back at the photos and see how far we have come in the last 10 years. We started with no heating, no windows, one toilet and one single plug socket… I now look around and marvel at what we’ve achieved - the development of the space, including not only the theatre but also our cabaret Mulberry Room, our ever-expanding programme of events and the growth of the team.

I think it’s wonderful that patrons who came to ‘A Year Without a Summer’, which was the first performance here in 100 years and our opening show, are returning regularly and support what we do.

Our Spring season has a wide range of shows to hopefully suit all tastes, from live music, plays, comedy, musicals lectures, films - including 35mm classics - and a VE day anniversary weekend. We are thrilled to have some fantastic performances both by local companies and well known TV personalities – it really is a season we are looking forward too.

Reaching 10 years I feel is an incredible milestone! I wanted to take the time to thank the trustees, without their passion and determination to restore this beautiful building we would not have the venue we have today.

Finally, we want to thank you, our patrons, for your continued support, as without you we simply couldn’t keep the theatre open.

Martin Hudson – Master of Wine - presents:

Wine Unpicked – USA and Canada Friday 28th February 19.30 £35 Wine making in the USA started with Franciscan monks in the 16th century, but really came into its own after the repeal of prohibition in the early 20th century. Every state has a winery, but we will focus mainly on California, which dominates US wine production and particularly exports.

We will start with a sparkling wine and then taste a selection of dry white and red wines before finishing with a Canadian Ice Wine sweetie. I hope to show that there is a lot more to California than just Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and White Zinfandel. The Shelley kitchen will supply a platter of food to enhance the wines.

Shelley Legacies Heritage Day Saturday 29th February 10.00-16.00

Join Dr David Coates from the University of Warwick as he investigates the legacies of the Shelley family in Bournemouth and Boscombe.

The all-day event will include interviews and talks by experts, and you’ll also have the opportunity to get hands-on, transcribing copies of manuscripts relating to Percy Florence Shelley. The day will culminate with a reading of one of Percy Florence Shelley’s short plays - the first time that it has been mounted since it was first staged in this very same venue over 150 years ago. You’re in for a treat!

Ben Ottewell Saturday 29th February 20.00 £18 Standard / £15 Concessions Benjamin Joseph “Ben” Ottewell is an English singer-songwriter, and one of the three lead singers of the English indie rock band Gomez.

He was the recipient of the Mercury Music Award Prize in 1998, and is well known for his “deep, raspy voice” and “gravelly baritone”.

Ben returns for the Bournemouth Folk Club series of concerts at the Shelley Theatre, appearing solo as he did for his previous sold-out show here in 2018, and appearance at Purbeck Valley Folk Festival.

The Haunting - A 35mm Presentation Saturday 21st March 20.00 £9 Robert Wise’s eerie tale, captured using creative filming techniques including distorted Panavision is regarded as one of the best horror films of all time.

The story, which centres on a group of people invited to investigate a haunted house, is now iconic. Its emphasis on the psychological as well as the supernatural has secured its legacy as the haunted house film against which all others are measured.

We are thrilled to be able to bring this to The Shelley Theatre from an archived 35mm print thanks to BFI and Park Circus.

Martin Hudson – Master of Wine - presents:

Wine Unpicked – The Loire and Alsace Friday 3rd April 19.30 £35 The Loire valley and Alsace are famous for their white wines, but both also produce reds and rosés. Although these regions may lie in the shadow of Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne and the Rhône, they both produce a wide variety of world class wines.

We will explore the range of styles on offer and clarify the sometimes rather confusing Alsace quality hierarchy as we taste a representative sample of ten wines.
