The end of the Second World War brought an entirely changed political configuration and redrawn borders, with Central and Eastern Europe under full political and ideological Soviet domination, enjoying marginally more independence than the Soviet republics. This new Europe was not homogenous: the situation of classics evolved in a variety of ways depending on each country’s cultural and historical affinity to Classical Antiquity – and on the harshness of the local regime in exercising control over education and intellectual life. Regional differences run parallel to the evolution of the local communist regimes and their own high and low periods. Official attitudes towards classics ranged from fostering ideologically promising fields of research and publication, while practically banning others, to prescribing detailed school curricula, specific selections of authors and texts and grammar exercises toeing the party line, to treating classics with benign neglect, as quaint, irrelevant, and doomed to oblivion.
An impressive glimpse into the peripeties of classical philology in the former socialist countries, as well as into tough and stubborn, often downright heroic resistance by teachers and professors of Latin and Greek, suspected and accused of clericalism, elitism, fruitless nostalgia, or worse. Published research on the history of Classics during the Communist period shines by its absence, to use a term borrowed from Tacitus, and exceptions to this rule are few and far between; even the authors dealing with the subject pay only tangential attention to the region. In contrast, the issue of Classics in both Italy and Germany before World War II has already been carefully examined. Nonetheless, the classical tradition in the former people’s democracies has recently become a salient research topic. Classics and Class, the second book in the cycle launched in 2013, probes a subject that remains a scholarly terra incognita — investigating the context for the classical tradition and its transmission in what Winston Churchill once called “the ancient states” behind the Iron Curtain that stretched “from Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic,” defining a significant part of Europe after World War II.
