ZIYING WU PORTFOLIO
About Me In this year, every day was an adventure. Plenty of new things came to me, made me have to trace this fast paced learning process and never stop. Of course, there’re lots of pressure, sometimes even made me panic, but I still love what I’m doing. It reminded me the Luban Lock, a traditional Chinese toy bricks I played when I was little. That was hard, and crushed my confidence because I have never succeeded. Then I gave up. I do have passion in graphic design, but it let me face failure again and again. However, I didn’t give up this times. I have more courage to see what I can learn from the failure but not only the result. I pushed myself, tried my best to reach the goal, and also learned to accept the unsatisfactory results. I’m happy that I’m still insisting what I want. This book can shows all the effort I did. Hope you like it.

These are the first sketches for Wendy’s jazz bar. I thought about two names, “Reed’s bar” and “LE REED'S BAR IDENTITY

We’re randomly assigned a classmate as partener, interviewed with each other, and designed a logo for partner’s dream company. My partner Wendy wanted to open a jazz bar in Brooklyn. For me, bar is the place that shows its owner’s trait. So I used one word in Wendy's Chinese name “Reed” to name the bar. And used script of “Reed’s” to be the main idea of the logo. Music is the most important thing in a jazz bar. I combined the clef with the “s” to show the music element. The logo is in a relaxed and joyful feeling. The whole series includes business card, letterhead, envelop, and wine coaster, which can appear everywhere in the bar.

The film of my DVD packaging design is Dr. Strangelove Or: How I learn to stop STEP 2
worrying and love the bomb, which is a black comedy movie by Stanley Kubrick. This black and white movie used hummer ways to hint the global thermonuclear holocaust, and people’s fear about wars. I used the movie’s name to show the flag of the US on the case's cover, also combined with a little photo GRAPHIC DESIGN
collages and illustrations.

This is a series of three book jackets of three stories that chose from Ethan Coen’s book, Gates of Eden. “The boys”, “The old country”, and “A Morty story”. I used two geometric shapes, circle and rectangle to represent two generations. Changing their positions to indicate the real relationships, and used photomontage to offer the hints of different characters.

The project challenged us to show the idea by using the photograph without Photoshop process. Factory farming was the theme I got, that made me think about a news that a food company used medicine to let chicken growwwww more wings for gaining more profits, which is really horrible and disgusting.

FACTORY FARMING POSTER

For showing people that factory farming really relates our daily lives, I chose the most popular protein, chicken, and stitched more pairs of wings on its body. Put it into a chemistry lab background and insert the needle into chicken skin, to make people think about that the foods we eat everyday are under the drug experiments. The fact of abusing of antibiotics in the medical prescription frame on the floor, with scattered pills.

87 TYPEFACE DESIGN STEP 1 TYPOGRAPHY
TYPEFACE AMOR Elegance and love is the main idea of this typeface. So I named it Amor. I was inspired by the arts from Art Nouveau, especially from Alphonse Mucha. Every letter has a special cut inside, which creates a floral and romantic feeling. Because it’s really decorative, I used it in the jewelry branding, which is specially for wedding jewelry.
The name of the wedding jewelry brand is “a.more”. It means “love” in Italian. The reason I separate “a” and “more” is, this jewelry is an extra love, extra surprise for couples.

“Run rabbit run” is an old children song in the Second World War. When I looked at “Swift”, the melody with jumping rhythm of this song suddenly appeared in my mind. Thus, I tried to used my typeface show the song’s lyrics. I feels it can really show the view that the rabbit runs around to avoid the farmer's gun.

This book is about finding the rhythm of architectures, showing with typography and their photos. And the grid we used in it helped us improve the layout and

highlight the architectures. The architect I chose was Louis Kahn. The way I treated the architecture images in my book is cutting the picture simply, rebuilding them, combining with lines and typography, continue the rhythm that the Kahn’s works showed. In this process, I learned how to added the typography to support the beauty of architectures, but not cover it up.

I was inspired by my favorite director Wes Anderson, who is the master of color. Also, Pantone is the best way to show colors, the number it uses give every color identity. So I chose the the most representative colors of every movie, and combined them with the movie scenes together, showing the movies in my eyes.

We were assigned to use circle to represent earth, and the square to represent ourselves, and find the relationship between them and showing in visual way. I hope I can always keep this positive attitude to treat everyone appear in my life.

I got “Titanic sinking” and “Men on the Moon” to use my own way showing these two news, and they are finished by paper cutting. Both of them I wanted to show more about the feeling of the people in these two news. “Men on the Moon” I wanted to show the lonely feeling of the astronaut. So I cut a back view of the astronaut, he is holding the American flag and looking at the small and distant earth. “Titanic sinking” is more about hopelessness. I cut many hands that raising up look like crying for help, and the Titanic flips over in the whole of iceberg, means its destiny. That’s the human side I want to show behind the news.
