Current Situation of Inujima Island

RENASCENCE RETREAT [Rebirth Home for Elderly]

Amidst industrial decline and an aging island, my quest on Inujima began. Abandoned homes and ecological scars spurred my vision for renewal. I transformed desolate structures into vibrant ecological havens—gardens, farmlands, and serene ponds—melding nature with history.Simultaneously, reclaimed spaces birthed communal hubs—kitchens, galleries, and havens for elders, knitting diverse needs into shared spaces. This narrative renaissance echoes a tale of resilience, crafting a vibrant community hub where nature and humanity intertwine.

Located off the coast of Okayama City, Inujima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea, where the post-war economic decline emptied the island of its 5,000 inhabitants, leaving only 50 people, with an average age of 75 years.

As industry left, the population of the Isle of Dogs dwindled and the more vacant houses were left behind. By intervening in the abandoned buildings and ecological restoration of the island, we reorganise the island's ecological public space and redefine the existence of Inujima through the implantation of different functions to satisfy the current living conditions of the elderly and tourists on the island.

We counted the vacant houses on the island and converted some of them into communal spaces and gardens. Some of the vacant houses were moved to the centre area and transformed into multi-functional composite places by us. Another part was transformed into gardens, vegetable plots, and ponds, providing a certain ecological restoration function for the Island.

Inujima is a peaceful island where people live happily.

People discovered that there was a granite resource underground and started collecting it.

More and more chemical plants were built and workers flocked to Inujima.

Residents identify plants with therapeutic qualities, ranging from anti-inflammatory to antimicrobial properties.They use these plants for healing.

inhabitants employ the art of weaving with plants to craft intricate fishing nets. This ageold practice is deeply rooted in the connection with the surrounding environment.

Turn Abandoned Houses into Garden

Feathered Sanctuary

Botanical Atlas

A total of six abandoned houses in different parts of Inujima were chosen to be turned into gardens.

The garden is in close proximity to the mountain, art installations and residents, and is of a suitable size to be displayed as the dominant garden.

Small ponds, birdhouses, and a variety of bird-attracting and ecologically friendly flowers are planted in the garden.

Below are the plant styles used in this garden.

Veggie Field It is the largest, in the middle of a residential area, so it was converted into a vegetable plot, with columns set up for irrigation.

Crop Retreat 6000

In a residential area in another part of Inujima, it was converted into a vegetable patch suitable for residents.

Bird Haven

The site is situated close to the mountain and as a natural garden can attract small birds.

8120 The garden uses a total of nine plant species, with plants of different heights and flower colours that echo each other.

Many bird-attracting plants are used, while ecological purification is taken into account, bringing beauty and greenery to Inujima at the same time!

Birds Interacting with the Garden Based on the house plan of the original site, we transformed the garden by retaining the original wall and column network structure and raising part of the ground level to attract people. We also designed the columns as birdhouses.

The Process of Moving House

We moved empty houses from other areas.The method of transportation these houses to the site by removing some of their parts but without disassembling them entirely, is referred to as 'Hikiya'.

On the island, I have established a communal kitchen and a vibrant public garden, intended for the shared use of both elderly residents and visitors alike.

Because the direct handling of wooden houses can easily lead to breakage, we need to treat the house before moving to maintain the integrity of the house.

Lorries are used for the moving process, which requires attention to the lifting and dropping process, while the foundations are laid in advance at the site.

The communal kitchen serves as a central hub for culinary activities, fostering a sense of community and encouraging social interaction. Equipped with modern amenities and traditional cooking tools, it provides a space where individuals can come together to prepare and share meals, promoting a sense of togetherness and cultural exchange.

We remove the boards from the house piece by piece, removing them until only the wooden post structure of the house remains.

We use wooden strips for secondary reinforcement, sealing the loose structure with long strips to prevent structures from falling apart.

The house is fully prepared and ready to be moved by crane.

We used a crane to carry the house, tying the ropes of the crane to either side of the long batten that had just been added.

Ensure that the house is loaded and driven to the base from the place of removal.

Transfer of house to lorry for relocation. Take care to lay a certain amount of planks on the bottom of the lorry and keep them stable.

Assemble and install

The final structure is completed by placing the house on the foundations of the early unit.

Spatial Choreography of Comunit Activities The building is designed with a communal kitchen, a communal dining room, a gallery, a warehouse, and a painting, calligraphy and chess room for the elderly to use while catering for both the elderly and visitors.

The Process of Forming Urban Villages

VERTICAL COMMUNITY

Cities are important spatial carriers for gathering population and industries. Since the reform and opening up in 1979, the urbanization of China has been in a state of rapid growth.

[Mixed-use Community in an Urban Village]

Separate In the heart of urban evolution lies a forgotten narrative—the urban village. Once earmarked for demolition, these communities now stand as testaments to neglected histories. Amid economic downturns, sweeping changes became implausible. In response, my vision reframes the narrative.Immersed in the lives of urban village tenants, I traced their daily trajectories, envisioning a new horizon. Elevated walkways intertwine with purpose-built structures, a symphony designed along their paths. This elevated community, born from their rhythms, stitches aspirations into the urban fabric.

Along with this growth, urban planners are now facing the dilemma of how to accommodate ever increasing urban populations versus finite resources available for energy, space, and land.

Urbanization in China Urban village is a special community emerged with China's rapid urbanization.

They used to be real villages populated by enterprising farmers, who converted their land into lowcost housing for migrant workers.

Due to the historical reasons of land reform, the government can only acquiesce to the behavior of villagers who rely on illegal construction to obtain rental income.

"Phonexi Hairpin"

ELEGY WALKWAY

Lu You and Tang Wan, a couple from the Southern Song Dynasty, used the "hairpin phoenix" as a symbol to tell the story of Tang Wan's love for him. The two were in love, but due to the opposition of Lu's mother and Tang Wan's unfortunate death, a beautiful marriage had no choice but to wither away. After Tang Wan saw it, she wrote back the lyrics.

During the Southern Song era, Shenyuan stood as a silent witness to the enduring love between Lu You and Tang Wan. Millennia later, government restoration revived the garden's legacy. To immortalize this tale, I've integrated an immersive theatre within its grounds. Here, guests journey through emotive landscapes, experiencing the lovers' saga firsthand. This convergence of history and modernity breathe new life into its ancient stones, echoing with the whispers of undying devotion. The immersive theatre allows them to immerse in the love of Lu You and Tang Wan.

[Where Nature Becomes Capital, shaping a Harmonious Socio-ecological Scape] The Taipu River, vital to the Yangtze River Delta, faces growing ecological and social challenges. To address this, I've initiated "Biocapital Scape," a pioneering project intertwining biology and ecological technology along the river's stretch.

It employs bio-installed systems harnessing natural processes to restore the river's health and solve social problems while generating societal value. Looking ahead, "Biocapital Scape" aims to revitalize the river's ecology, elevate local environments, and stimulate economic growth.
