publisher’s desk Brianna you are a princess in my heart, and I care for you so much. I love the fondness in your eyes and your tender little touch. I looked at you when you were born, and knew then straight away, that I would be forever here to watch you grow and play. And I knew that one day you would GROW away. And today is that day. You bring to me a heart of joy, and memories so great, and a powerful sense of fatherhood that no one can debate.

I watched you sleep and dream of things that I can only wonder. That innocent look upon your face just made my heart grow fonder. I’d see you run and jump and shout and calling out my name Daddy, Daddy as you jumped into my arms. No love that I have ever known could ever feel the same. No suffering or tragedy nor deeply seated pain could ever over shadow the bond that we retain. And so Brianna my little princess before you go to sleep, before you lie your head next to your MAN tonight. Remember I am your daddy and I am yours to keep. Congratulations Bree and Vernon may God bless all your generations. Love Daddy B and Mama Rose

Presentation Skills for Professionals
In his book, The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking, Dale Carnegie says that people evaluate us in four ways: what we say, how we say it, what we do, and how we do it. Some professionals are very competent in giving clear dynamic presentations. You leave the presentation with a clear understanding of the message, the desired end result, and key points that you need to remember. On the other hand, many professional presentations are disorganized, hard to follow, and you leave with only a vague idea of the point of the presentation. In this seminar, you take a step-by-step approach to presentations so that you can be sure that your message is clear, your audience stays engaged, and you cover all the relevant points you wish to make.
Congratulations! You’ve been promoted and what mattered before doesn’t count anymore. Now it’s. . .
• Not about your personal achievement...but coaching others to succeed. • Not about your drive to get things done...but your ability to motivate others to get it done. • Not about you...it’s all about them. In other words, the skills that got you the promotion can’t make you successful as a manager or supervisor. To achieve success you need a firm grasp of business skills and human relations skills — the skills you’ll learn at People Skills for Managers and Supervisors This intensive one-day seminar from Dale Carnegie Training provides everything you need to know to achieve outstanding results through others. Of course, you cover the basics like planning, organizing and control, as well as building your interpersonal effectiveness. Spend a day with us and learn how to gain employee commitment, lead confidently and motivate employees to peak performance. Get the skills you need to avoid the 10 most common mistakes managers make. Gain important insights into the legal dos and don’ts of hiring, performance management and termination. Discover how to build good relationships up and down the organization

AT DALE CARNEGIE TRAINING®, WE CALL THEM “SKILLS THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME.”
In this seminar we will begin by with establishing the objectives of our message, and narrowing down to the key points we want to leave with our listeners. Then we will learn a process for presentations which include meetings, briefings up, across and down, as well as technical training sessions. We will finish the day with a process for dealing with confrontational questions. This is among the most difficult of all presentation challenges for many professionals.

How to Turn Buying Objections into Selling Opportunities Many sales people react emotionally, defensively or negatively when they hear objections. Their reactions turn the prospect off and ruin the chance to get a sale and build relationships. Now you can learn to break that self-destructive reaction cycle. Put yourself on the road to turning objections into stepping-stones to sales success. This one-day seminar from Dale Carnegie Training will show you how to overcome objections effectively. You will begin by learning how to use a proven questioning technique to determine if the objection you are hearing is the real one. This is a critical step since prospects will often mask their real issues with “brush off” objections. Next you will learn to cushion the objection, clarify it and search for additional hidden objections. Once you have the real objections on the table, you will learn to use the methods to overcome the problem and match these methods to the category of objection to insure that you move successfully toward the sale.

Step Up to Leadership Don’t Supervise… SUPERLEAD your team to breakthrough performance. Tell me what to do and I’ll do it to protect my job. Motivate me to want to do it and I will do it to the best of my ability. Supervisors and managers who understand this simple truth and know how to implement it are the ones who create impact in today’s organizations. They develop high performance teams that get results because they know how to lead a team – not just manage it. Dale Carnegie Training® gives business people the tools to successfully build their case. We excel at empowering employees to communicate boldly before any constituency, under any conditions. We deliver critical methods and tools people can use to present compelling messages, connect confidently with any audience, and help generate new growth. This information-packed one-day program will smooth your transition from worker to supervisor to leader. Of course, you’ll get the basics like time management, delegation, and performance appraisal techniques, but Step Up to Leadership will show you so much more.

CHRISTMA Denver’s music expressed love of fellowman, country, nature and love of family. Written by ET Russell, journalist and news editor for Big Bear Lake NewsRoom, owner of Rim of the World Media Marketing
16 | S Magazine
nce again it was a Rocky Mountain Christmas in the San Bernardino Mountains by Jim Curry and his Band. Over the years, the Curry’s including the band members have become a part of an extended family in the mountain community. Entertaining audiences throughout the country with the familiar music of singer/songwriter John Denver, Jim Curry has continued to carry out Denver’s legacy. When invited to meet Jim and Anne Curry at the home of Chad Michell Trio Bass-singer Joe Frazier a few years ago, I was so impressed by the generosity and kindness of this couple. After leaving the introductory gathering, I reflected that those two new friends were exactly like I would’ve expected John Denver to be, had I met him. John Denver’s sudden death in an aircraft accident saddened the world in 1997. Denver’s music expressed love of fellowman, country, nature and love of family. Family is of the utmost importance to the Curry’s as well as their band members: Chris Wills, Gene Wagner, Diane Ireland and Tom Williams. When performing, Jim Curry and his Band come across to their audiences as one whole, harmonizing family. The music of John
Denver has been a welcomed part of life for thousands since the 80’s. Jim Curry has capitalized on this and delivered his music as a tribute to Denver, to audiences everywhere. Questioning Anne Curry about, ‘How do you do it? How do you keep the family image so consistent?’ Audiences quickly pick-up on being real, being genuine, being themselves, a team effort performance. Do we, the audience know what goes on behind the scene? Jim and Anne met over 40 years ago, when they were kids and eventually their childhood friendship developed into a lifelong love affair. The Curry’s met flutist Diane Ireland, a resident of Colorado Springs, at the Annual John Denver Gathering in Aspen, fourteen years ago. Once they heard her play her flute they just knew they had to ask her to play in the band! Diane was a big fan of John Denver’s and she knew all of the flute parts to Denver’s music. Jim and Anne strongly believe that the flute is the soul of John Denver music, and so they continue to make the flute a focal point in their concerts. Keyboard player, Chris Wills lives in La Habra, California. Twenty years ago,
www.southcoastmagazine.com
before Jim and Anne started playing John Denver music full-time, they met Chris who had a gig at a craft fair. After Chris introduced himself and expressed an interest in joining the Curry’s band, they checked Chris out online. They nearly fell on the floor….he was so highly, musically educated! Jim and Anne looked at each other questioning, “Why would he want to play with us?” They were right on the verge of making a big life-changing decision to specialize in John Denver music. Chris was the perfect fit for playing all of the beautiful piano lines and orchestra lines that John Denver recorded with Lee Holdridge. Gene Wagner, the Drummer, lives in Palm Springs. Jim and Anne met Gene fifteen years ago, through Church connections. The most seasoned professional of all the band members, Gene had played drums in clubs and cruise ships behind big stars like Rita Moreno, Jerry Van Dyke and Phyllis Diller – just to name a few. Gene had promised his wife many years previously, that he would give up music to live a non-nomadic life when they married and had their baby girl; however, Gene came out of retirement to play drums for the Curry’s. Gene has been a steady source of encouragement from the begin-
MAS ning, as well as the heartbeat of the band. He could see from the beginning that the audience really responded to Jim singing the music of John Denver, so he has encouraged Jim to continue ever since. All of the band members have children, now grown, that make the commitment to working and traveling with the band a bit easier, but more of a challenge for the spouses, who are left at home alone. Anne comments that she and Jim are the lucky ones, traveling together. The sacrifice a musician makes is the certainty that he is going to miss birthdays, holiday celebrations, weddings and funerals. The performance contracts made with the ticket sellers are to be honored no matter what. He must go out there – sometimes when he doesn’t want to go, sometimes when the weather’s not good, sometimes at the risk of losing his relationships at home. But as in every family, there’s organizing and business transactions to ‘get the show on the road’. The amount of work required to prepare for the Jim Curry shows is daunting; they often think of themselves as a travel agency more than a band! Logistics is one of the most important parts of the music business and it is also
the key to keeping the bond that binds them. Before a trip, Anne has prepared for each band member to get a document with all of the flight information, hotel information, report times, show times, etc. Diane includes checking out restaurants that will be satisfactory to everyone. One of the holiday songs that is on the Curry’s new CD, a song Jim wrote, is titled Memories of Home. The song is about not being able to come home for the holidays: I can’t be home this year, I’m so far away, I dream of that moment when, I come through that door…. Ironically, this will be the first Christmas away from home since Jim and Anne were married thirty-six years ago. The Christmas tour, which begins in Big Bear Lake, California, has been extended through New Year’s Eve in Rochester, New York, affirming that the Jim Curry Band will not be going home for Christmas. “I was sad at first, and reluctant to go.” Anne laments, “The new song coming from the next room went straight to my heart;there’s no place like Home for the Holidays.”

HAPPY 2016
FROM THE TOLL ROADS! We hope your holidays were happy and that you enjoy the ride in 2016.
What a Wonderful World My mom has always been an optimist. She sees hope when others just see rain. For as long as I can remember, each fall, when temperatures cooled and the autumn rains rolled in over our pasture, she pointed out a symbol of that hope. A rainbow! I cling to those now. Rainbows. Because they are harder for her to point out. If an older parent needs daily assistance, maybe they’re not independent anymore. Consider Áegis Living for professional help. SCHS ENTREPRENEURS
SCHS Entrepreneur Team Wins Global Technology Competition at the World EXPO in Milan, Italy
CEO Ernst & Young in Italy and managing partner in the Mediterranean - Donato Lacovone, Lauren Woodstra (16), Hannah Reed (16), Nicky Chin (14), Lance Woodstra (17), Mikayla Hartigan (15), HPYE Director and CEO of Emgi, Amir Raveh.
The San Clemente High School Entrepreneur team consisting of 5 students, was chosen to represent the USA at a global technology competition involving 37 countries. Hype Youth Startup Foundation partnered with Ernst & Young choosing seven finalists to present their product idea. The theme was, “Innovation for the Elderly.” The seven countries chosen to be
Congratulations to the young entrepreneurs of San Clemente High School
in the finals were: USA, Italy, Romania, Israel (2), Macedonia, and Montenegro. The judges said it was a unanimous decision and that the USA team rose above the rest with a very professional presentation and because of the viability of their product. Articles in Italian newspapers agreed (I have copies of those articles if you are interested). They will now begin to work with the European Alliance for Innovation to bring their product to the next step. The team has already filed for a patent of the product with the US Patent Office. Many kids think that 14-17 year olds cannot make a difference in their world. These young entrepreneurs were determined to give it their best shot and they were rewarded for their hard work. There
was a lot of work that went into creating a product; market research, demographics research, creating a go-to-market strategy, and a financial plan for 3 years. They created mock-ups of the product, a commercial and a PowerPoint presentation and even filed for a patent before leaving for Milan. Their website is: www.MOMmanager.com and they are still seeking donations to assist them in bringing this product to market. The students will receive a plaque from the city of San Clemente Mayor, Chris Hamm for outstanding citizenship, on the 17th. They will also be getting a letter of recognition from Governor Brown, and hopefully recognition from the White House....still waiting to hear back.

YOU ARE NOT BEING PERSECUTED
MORE ADVENTUROUS
by Jessica Novello
WHY SHOULD THE CUPS BE ADORNED WITH MESSAGES OF CHRISTMAS?
friend showed me a video last night of a loud, aggressive, “Christian” man claiming that the new holiday Starbucks cups were an intentional movement on behalf of Starbucks to take the “Christ” out of Christmas. Now, Christians all over are equating this act with persecution because there aren’t any overt references to Christmas on the cups. Yeah, I’m being entirely serious. I could not wrap my mind around the argument he was trying to make. Red cups are persecution? He also commented that Starbucks employees are banned from saying “Merry Christmas” and that Starbucks “hates Jesus.” Those are some pretty lofty, completely unfounded claims. I’m not writing this because I love Starbucks or I want those sweet, sweet Creme Brûlée lattes protected: I’m writing this because American Christians need to stop claiming that they are being persecuted. Starbucks is a company. It is run by a CEO. It is composed of almost two hundred thousand employees who work in stores all over the world. Corporations aren’t religious. When we all die and get to those pearly gates, I don’t think Starbucks will be standing alongside Chick Fil A waiting to hear if they get to spend eternity worshipping the good Lord. The people who compose the corporation can be religious, but in and of itself, the corporation is not. Why should Starbucks honor
22 | S Magazine
one faith above another, when it is not a religious entity? Why should the cups be adorned with messages of Christmas? What about Kwanzaa, Hannukah, or Mawlid? These are all holidays that are incredibly important to individuals from other cultural or religious backgrounds. Why should a secular corporation celebrate one holiday above another? Would people be crying persecution if the cups were blue with little menorahs on them? I would imagine that a significant population, the same individuals who are claiming persecution in this case, would regardless of what the cups looked like. That is, unless the cups were overtly and undeniably “Christian.” Also, do none of these individuals remember that Starbucks, in addition to their annual “Holiday Blend” sell a “Christmas Blend” and an Advent Calendar? They hate Christmas? They hate Jesus? Oh, it really does make my blood boil. It is so ignorant. No, it is more than ignorant... it is asinine. The way this man is encouraging people to make their point to Starbucks is through ordering drinks and saying that their names are “Merry Christmas” so that the cups will have their specific holiday message on it and baristas will be forced to say it. First of all, let’s go over “Boycotting 101”- maybe don’t send people to spend their money to support the place that you’re so angry at. I mean, this just seems so basic, but maybe I’m the one that is backwards. Second of all, it is just so stupid that I’m not actually going to
www.southcoastmagazine.com
dignify their argument by making another point. Don’t get me wrong- I don’t like the cups this year. My dislike for them has absolutely nothing to do with anything other than the fact that minimalism isn’t my favorite style of art/design. That is it. It has nothing to do with my own religious beliefs. It simply involves my personal tastes and preferences. Persecution is such a buzzword right now. So many people, as of late, have claimed persecution and I want to look at them and recite these famous words from “The Princess Bride:” I am especially bothered by these claims of persecution in light of what is happening to our Christian brothers and sisters all over the globe. Every month, three hundred and twenty-two Christians are killed for their faith and seven hundred and seventy-two acts of violence are committed against Christians because of their faith. These acts of violence can include physical abuse, rape, beatings, false imprisonment, etc. This is persecution. Starbucks having plain red (okay, ombre...) cups is not the same as being imprisoned for over three years in an Iranian prison for your religion like Saeed Abedini. Persecution is real. It’s happening all over the world. It’s happening right now. It is brutal, terrible, horrific, and devastating. But, it is not happening at the hand of Starbucks or their red cups.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY CHRIS DOLKAS STATE FARM® AGENT
11/27/15 9:32 AM
You carry life insurance to protect the ones you love from financial hardship if you should die. But what if that policy could refund money to you and your family while you’re alive? That’s the premise behind Return of Premium life insurance. Here’s what to know about this coverage.
What is Return of Premium life insurance?
Return of Premium life insurance is a term policy with a level premium period of either 20 or 30 years. At the end of the term, if the death benefit has not been paid and you’ve made regular premium payments, you’ll be refunded the money you’ve paid over the level premium period less any loan and accrued loan interest on the policy. The return of premiums typically amount to tens of thousand dollars— and you can use that money however you wish.
What are the benefits?
In addition to the protection that the policy affords your loved ones:
• Over the level premium period, your policy will build cash value and you can borrow against that during the initial term period. • The death benefit of your policy is generally income tax-free. • If you have one or more other policies with your insurer, adding this coverage may make you eligible for discounts.
What else should you consider?
To keep the policy from lapsing, you’ll need to make regular premium payments for 20 to 30 years. Learn more about the Return of Premium policy from State Farm®, or contact your State Farm agent for details. Neither State Farm nor State Farm agents provide tax, legal, or investment advice. Please consult your tax, legal, or investment advisor regarding your specific circumstances.
• The money you get back from a Return of Premium policy is generally tax-free. • You can use the refund any way you choose—to help pay off a mortgage, fund college tuition, boost your retirement savings or something else. 26 | S Magazine

HOME STYLE
Outdoor Living DESIGNED AROUND YOU
YOUR LIFESTYLE IS OUR our home’s outdoor spaces are often overlooked when thinking of ways to improve the enjoyment and value of your home. Your front yard is the first impression your home gives to your guest or potential homebuyers; it can either welcome them in or scare them way. Your backyard is often ignored and underutilized, but can add tons of living space to your home which can give you more outdoor living and more value to your home. With the right features, you’ll love inviting people over to your place and spending time in the backyard. Here are a few exterior enhancements you should make to add
value to your house: Spruce up the grass: If your lawn is dead and you have no hope of bringing it back to life, then replace it with artificial turf. This is an excellent alternative to natural grass because the fibers will not turn brown and die, nor will you have to worry about regularly cutting the grass. The greenery will lift your spirits every time you look outside and have you sitting in the backyard more often. Lay pavers: Cracked and damaged driveways and patios are not an appealing sight. They look uninviting and could even
be a tripping hazard. With pavers in place, people will be impressed by the beautiful stones and love the intricate patterns leading up to the house, while increasing the value of your home if you decide to sell.
CORNERSTONE At System Pavers, we design and build elegant outdoor living spaces around you. Our natural stone, interlocking paving stones, maintenance-free turf, ambient lighting, built-in BBQs, water
Increase the lighting: If your lighting is outdated, replace it. A warm glow around the entryway will make people feel welcome, and path lights will increase safety. Add an outdoor living space: To enhance the backyard, install an outdoor fireplace or kitchen. You’ll enjoy these cozy features because you’ll be able to host more

outside activities like a backyard movie night or a barbecue. If you are looking to transform your front or backyard into a space that is warm and inviting while increasing the value of your home, System Pavers is here to help. Contact us today and schedule a completely free, no-obligation consultation, and let our designers create a custom design that will fit the look and feel of your home. MicroPigmentation Changing lives one ink dot at a time s a medical practitioner in the hair restoration industry, I see many different cases on a weekly basis. Some cases are straight forward while others require extra attention. Five years ago a young man named John (not his real name) came in to the New Hair Institute for a consultation. He had no hair anywhere on his body, he wore prosthetic eyebrows and he had no eyelashes. This medical condition is called Alopecia Totalis. A milder form of the same condition which leaves random bald patches on the head and body is called Alopecia Areata. Both conditions are caused by a malfunction of the immune system. It is not known what triggers this autoimmune reaction in the body. Some medical research suggests that it is a combination of genetic susceptibility and an environmental trigger such as a virus or a bacteria. With both Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Areata, the body’s immune system attacks healthy hair follicles which results in total baldness or patchy baldness. In both instances, the effect on the victim of these conditions can be socially devastating and contribute to extreme low self-esteem. During the consultation, John explained how he was living his life under a hat for more than a decade. He never took it off in public or when in the presence of other people. We spoke about his condition and I explained how there are no specific FDA approved medication for his condition although some doctors will use certain medications as an off-label treatment. He was interested in our Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) procedure. SMP is the art of tattooing small dots

on the scalp that mimics the look of a shaved head or a buzz cut. The ink is specially formulated so that it can be applied to the upper layers of the scalp’s skin. Small medical grade needles are used to lightly inject the ink just below the surface of the scalp unlike a regular tattoo where a larger needle injects ink deep into the epidermis. During the SMP procedure, the patient can choose to be sedated or remain awake. In both cases, local anesthesia is administered thus making the patient’s experience pain free. For the next several hours, a New Hair Institute doctor and an experienced technician will work to simulate the patient’s hair line and hair follicles through the art of SMP. Three to four sessions are usually required to complete the procedure and they are usually scheduled one to two weeks apart. When John’s procedure was completed, he walked out of the New Hair Institute’s clinic without wearing his hat. My staff and I were filled with that warm and fuzzy feeling as we witnessed his joy. A year later, I invited John to attend the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons conference. He joined me on stage where I presented him to more than 400 hair restoration doctors from around the world. Following the meeting, many doctors stood in line to view and touch his SMP results in person. They were all amazed that it’s not hair.
This patient suffers from Alopecia Totalis
An autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks a patient’s hair follicles and prevents hair from growing. This patient has no hair on his head or anywhere on his body. After a Scalp MicroPigmentation procedure at the New Hair Institute, he now looks like he has a full head of shaved hair.
This patient has Alopecia Areata
An autoimmune conditions where the immune system attacks a patient’s hair follicles. The condition causes the patient’s hair to fall out in patches on his head and body. This young man visited the New Hair Institute and had Scalp MicroPigmentation performed. He now looks more natural and his self-esteem has returned.
Now it is five years later and John still attends the New Hair Institute’s monthly open house event. SMP changed his life forever.

ZOO
Big Bear Alpine Zoo Nearing Construction Date The Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District is excited to announce that the construction of the new Big Bear Alpine Zoo is right around the corner both literally and figuratively! Construction is scheduled to begin no later than March 2016 and may begin earlier if weather permits. The new Big Bear Alpine Zoo will be constructed at the corner of Club View Drive and Moonridge Road providing a relatively short transition for the current animal collection from the current site once the new facility is open. The Zoo’s mission is and has been to rescue and rehabilitate injured, orphaned or abandoned wildlife with the hope in each case to release the animal back into its natural habitat. Those that are not releasable due to human imprinting, debilitating injury, or inability to sustain in the wild become our education ambassadors helping the Zoo to further its message of ecology through education. The new facility is scheduled to open between Memorial Day and Labor Day 2017. Until then, don’t miss the chance to see our upgraded Snow Leopard, Black Bear, Raccoon, and Raven exhibits, and all of the rest of our magnificent animals.
