BRADLEY WRIGHT founder/publisher

False friends are like autumn leaves found everywhere — true friends are like the finest red diamonds, precious and rare. Dr. Peter Czulerer is the precious Moussaieff Red or the rarest Hancock of medical gems. If you Goggle true friends, rare and precious, Dr. Peter's name may pop up. If this is not the case someone check with the SEO experts they must be missing information, data, or real news?

Having served in various volunteer roles at Mission Hospital, I believe that it is important to assist our community and dedicated volunteers in their time of most need. When our health is in jeopardy and we see life spiraling out of control, we are under severe stress and most frustrated. This is particularly the time when Dr. Czuleger volunteers to make a personal house call, visits a loved one or reaches out to one of our volunteers who needed prompt medical attention; making a house call, taking time over a weekend to promptly diagnose a major eye infection and swiftly solving what may have been the loss of sight. I can cite many similar examples that describe Dr. Czuleger’s generous behavior, professionalism and giving spirit. Eduardo Jordan, Past Foundation Chair Mission Hospital Chair, Finance Committee, Board of Trustees, Mission Hospital Dr. Czuelger is a community dream as a human being and such a wonderful physician. I have witnessed Peter for years help develop Mission Hospital and St. Joesph Health at Mission into one of our world's premier medical institutions. Peter has the gift of giving his time, talent and treasure. Such an honor to have worked closely with this gentleman witnessing his unique and genuine caring heart and personality. Winnie Johnson, Past Vice President Development and Foundation Mission Hospital I was fortunate to work alongside all these folks at Mission Hospital and just want to also thank all the Doctors who have saved my wife's life and delivered all three of our healthy children. It was an honor to have served on their Board. Recently, Dr. Kent Adamson saved my leg which I had completely severed internally. Just wanted to express my gratitude to Kent and his awesome staff in our salute to Dr. Peter Czuleger. Seemed like the apropos environment to do so. Both are precious and rare friends.

THE HISTORY BEHIND BIG BEAR LAKE'S SKI RESORT In 1925, Walter E. Kruckman, General Traffic Agent for the Motor Transit Company that served Crestline, Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs and Big Bear Valley would be the first to stimulate winter sports in the area. In the early 1930s, the Viking Ski Club of Los Angeles provided instruction and started holding competitive winter sports events in Big Bear. Downhill skiing was gaining popularity and in 1934 a sling lift was at Fish Camp (presently known as Snow Valley). The historic Lynn sling lift opened in Big Bear in 1938; it was located at Snow Forest Ski Resort, which has since closed. During the 1940s and early 50s several small rope tows were constructed, including an Upper and Lower Moonridge Rope Tow, located at the base of Bear Mountain Ski area today. 12 | S Magazine

Tommy Tyndall, a young man with an impressive skiing background, arrived in Big Bear in 1947 and opened ski schools in several areas. He found the Big Bear Winter Club and held the first Snow Carnival competition in 1949. Tommy looked for a location where he could open a ski resort that could be improved and expanded, known today as Snow Summit. In 1952 Tommy created the Snow Summit Ski Corporation with financial assistance. He built a mile-long double chairlift, which reached all the way to the top of the mountain. This was the largest ski development in the San Bernardino Mountains and Snow Summit became Southern California’s premier ski resort. After an excellent snow season in 1969, Snow Summit was able to add a second chairlift. When several former Snow Summit ski instructors, including Fred Goldsmith and Bill Strickland,

purchased the Moonridge area the name was changed to Goldmine and a mile long chair lift to the top of the mountain was installed. The sport of skiing grew rapidly during the 70s and the winter economy in the Big Bear Valley. By 1980, Goldmine had three chairlifts and an expanded snow making system. Then in 1988 Goldmine was purchased by S-K-I Ltd., a corporation owning two large ski areas in Vermont and changed the name to Bear Mountain. Millions of dollars were invested in major overall improvements including the first high-speed chairlift in Big Bear Lake, and shortly after a high-speed chair lift was installed at Snow Summit. After snowboarding exploded on the scene in the late 1980s, sweeping through ski resorts across the country.

www.southcoastmagazine.com

Dick Kun Led the move to focus Bear Mountain upon the snowboarder, with Bear Mountain acquiring the name "The Park." Bear Mountain was sold to the Fiberboard Corporation, which in turn sold it to Booth Creek Holdings in 1997. In 2002, Booth Creek Holding then sold Bear Mountain to Snow Summit Ski Corporation and in 2014; Mammoth Mountain bought Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. Last year Mammoth Mountain was sold to Aspen Skiing Co. with them changing the name to Alterra Mountain Company.

WHAT IS RUSSIAN MATH, ANYWAY?

ecently, NPR ran a story detailing the "Russian Math" phenomenon — the growth of the Russian School of Mathematics from a kitchen-table passion project to a school that serves over 20,000 students across the country. But what is "Russian Math," and how does it differ from other approaches? “Russian Math” is built on the foundational principle that the cognitive ability of a child — the power to think and reason — is not predetermined at birth, but can actually be developed over time. And that math is by far the best tool for this development.

Curriculum In a “Russian Math” curriculum — the first pillar of this approach — students are taught to think both on a concrete and abstract level, to employ reason, logic and utilize previous knowledge. Take the problem below, for example, which students will encounter in our curriculum in the 2nd and 3rd grades.

Solve problems b and c using the result of problem a. 634 - 182 = 452 635 - 182 = ? 635 - 181 = ? We do not expect the child to calculate the answers using specific quantities but rather to reason through the problems at an abstract level. The classroom conversation might go something like this... Students will suggest different ways to find the 14 | S Magazine

answer; the teacher will then challenge them to compare the first and second examples and explore how the difference between them might lead to a different result. Eventually, mostly on their own, children will discover that: b) 635 - 182 would equal 453, because you’re taking the same number away from a number that is one greater, leaving you with a difference that is one greater. c) We just learned that 635 - 182 equal 453. Now 635 - 181 would equal 454, because you’re taking a number that is one less away from the same number, leaving you with a difference that is one greater.

Sufficient practice and repeated success with challenging yet accessible problems develops a mindset that is open for ex-ploration and challenges. Over time, top scores on standardized tests and mathematical olympiads become a natural by-product. More importantly, math becomes a beautiful, exciting, and a fun tool that empowers the mind. To learn more about the program, please schedule free evaluation (949) 864-6592 missionviejo@russianschool.com www.russianschool.com/mission-viejo

The teacher will then help students express their thoughts through the language of algebra, replacing the numbers with symbols A and B, and rewriting example C) above as A - ( B -1 ) = ( A - B ) + 1. These problems offer a glimpse into some of the main elements of the Russian Math curriculum: • Rather than working with specific quantities, students use abstractions and explore the relationships between them, developing a language for this type of thinking process. • Students learn not to fear something that looks difficult, or even impossible. They draw from their reasoning ability and problem-solving experience to navigate through problems. • Students begin multi-step problems as early as 1st grade, learning to build on previous results to progress towards the solution. www.southcoastmagazine.com www.russianschool.com

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES EAST OF DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES. IT IS A FULL-SERVICE AIRPORT WITH NONSTOP COMMERCIAL JET SERVICE TO 19 MAJOR AIRPORTS IN THE U.S. AND TAIWAN, WITH CONNECTING SERVICE TO MANY DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS. 20 | S Magazine BY CHERYL LEON, CHELSHOTZ PHOTOGRAPHY www.southcoastmagazine.com PHOTOGRAPHY

Mayor Paul Leon WISHES FOR MORE FLIGHTS COME TRUE

Ontario International Airport returned to local control, (Ontario City), on November 1, 2016, following many years of negotiations with Los Angeles World Airports. Since then, Ontario Airport has seen tremendous growth and lower airfares are directly tied to airport revenues. In the past year, Frontier Airlines, China Airlines and JetBlue all have begun service at ONT, bringing with them a number of new nonstop destinations: (New York City, Orlando, Florida, and Taiwan). Today, in fact, ONT is the only Southern California airport other than LAX to offer transpacific service. Overall, Ontario Airport is on pace to serve five-million travelers in 2018, up nearly 20% from pre-acquisition levels and the highest total in 10 years. This makes ONT one of the fastest-growing airlines in the United States, offering nonstop service to 19 major airports in the U.S., Mexico and Taiwan, as well as connecting service to many domestic and international destinations. An average of 67 flights depart from ONT every day, among nine different carriers. Looking ahead, 2019 will be another strong year for passenger travel at Ontario Airport. Delta has announced it will begin nonstop flights to Atlanta in Spring 2019, and Southwest Airlines will begin 4 daily flights to San Francisco, and an additional flight to Denver, in June 2019. With all of this happening, it’s easy to forget that ONT also ranks among the fastest-growing – and largest – freight airports in North America, posting consistent double-digit increases in cargo volume. Through the first 10 months of this year, cargo volume grew to more than 610,000 tons from 520,000 tons over the same 10-month period a year ago, an increase of more than 17%. A recent report in Freight Waves magazine

ranked Ontario as the largest freight market in the United States, with Ontario Airport playing a major role. Finally, several new leases are helping to improve the customer experience and drive positive financial results. These include:

Ontario Airport is no longer one of aviation’s best-kept secrets, but an emerging international transportation gateway, and for those who know, ONT is a fantastic airport experience.

SC HEALTH

TRIED and true DENTAL HABITS As a dentist, part of my job is to motivate and encourage patients towards good dental habits. However, for most patients, being told to brush and floss is not enough. Offering up alternative solutions, suggesting a change in one's dental routine at home, or simply reviewing the basic techniques with a mirror can make a difference in improving one’s oral health. Here are some things to consider to keep your teeth in tip-top shape:

1.

The basics of brushing: Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush for at least two to three minutes twice a day. Really spend the time to get in there and reach all the spots. Don’t forget to focus on brushing close to the gumline where most food and bacterial dental plaque settle. Also, begin brushing the hardestto-reach areas first (usually the very back and surfaces next to the tongue)—our attention is greatest at the beginning of a task and therefore this ensures that nothing gets missed.

2. Flossing requires time and patience.

Most people report that they do not floss because they do not have the time. Make the time! If you can’t floss once a day (which is ideal), floss when you can and do it correctly. (Floss correctly by sliding it on the side surfaces of teeth and not just sliding it in between teeth.) Flossing really makes a difference in your overall dental health. You can even floss while watching television in your favorite chair. By the way, if you notice your gums bleeding from flossing, don’t stop. This bleeding is an indication of inflammation and could be present because you haven’t been flossing. The bleeding should subside and get better in about a week or so. Lastly, although these may not take the place of flossing, other tools can be useful to clean in between teeth also. These include specially-shaped toothpicks (wooden or plastic) and small interdental brushes. Also consider an oral irrigation device that is designed to direct water between teeth. You’d be amazed at what it cleans out from between your teeth and lands in the sink bowl. Check out your local drugstore’s oral care section to see what’s available.

3. Be mindful of how certain food tex-

tures stick to teeth. Starchy foods tend to be chewy and get caught between the teeth and stick to the smooth surfaces more. Food that sits around your teeth and gums all day encourages more plaque buildup and a chance for cavities or gum disease to develop. Think about how a bowl of pasta would affect your teeth as opposed to a crunchy, crisp apple. Consider snacking on foods that “cleanse” our teeth. Coincidentally, these “cleansing” foods are also nutritionally good for you (e.g. apples, carrots, celery).

Good oral health is mostly achieved by what you do at home on a daily basis. Take the steps to brush and floss correctly and do visit your dentist on a regular basis. My husband and I have a popular mantra at home, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” For dental health, this means, you can’t have healthy teeth without doing the work to get there.

Many of the things we do everyday can erode tooth enamel. Erosion of our enamel can cause teeth sensitivity and/ or discoloration. We expose our teeth to acid through certain foods we eat and beverages we drink. Beverages containing acid include citric juices, carbonated drinks, sports drinks, and even fizzy mineral water. Lessen the erosion of enamel by rinsing with water after your teeth have been exposed to acidic foods or beverages. Try sipping acidic drinks through a straw to minimize contact with the teeth. Also, wait at least one hour before

SC HEALTH

Geneaire

We would all like to live longer, but most people are equally concerned with the quality of their life as they age. They are looking for increased "healthspan," not just "lifespan." Those of us in our later years have all probably experienced a "senior moment" or two, and are concerned about how to limit degradation in memory and brain function as we grow older. Although there are many "remedies," from brain exercises to supplements derived from stranger things like jelly fish, few take advantage of the latest available science. Fortunately, the result of over 30 years of scientific research and clinical trials, right here in Orange County, has recently resulted in the availability of a totally new class of compounds to help us. Geneaire ReBuilder™ is the culmination of this research at UC Irvine, Genescient Inc, and Hoag Hospital. It is specifically targeted at stabilizing the longevity of neural/brain cells and resisting degradation caused by aging and its related disease. But Geneaire ReBuilder™ is also very different from a traditional pharmaceutical product that typically targets a specific disease with a single, manufactured component. Due to side effects and other factors, such drugs are subject to industry practices and government approvals and frequently cost hundreds of millions or billions of dollars to bring to market over a typical

INTRODUCING A NEW CLASS OF SUPPLEMENT

5-10-year time frame. Geneaire ReBuilder™ is the first of a new class of accuceutical product that bridges the gap between these extremes. Its development has been based on decades of scientific research at accredited institutions, using the latest techniques such as advanced genomics, cloud-based analytics and AI modelling. This research was tested with an extremely successful clinical trial, and the formula has been in active and successful use for over three years. Because the product is entirely created from industry-standard “GRAS List” compounds (Generally Considered As Safe), testing and clinical trials are able to be completed much faster than typical pharmaceutical trials, making the time to availability much shorter — and the product consequently much more affordable. Geneaire ReBuilderTM is a new class of supplement to address brain function degradation problems associated with general aging and the diseases linked to it. It is a complex supplement made from a patented formulation of 13 interacting compounds selected from the Federal Drug Administration's GRAS List (Generally Regarded as Safe) and is suitable for long term daily use with a focus on early prevention of brain deterioration, rather than as a cure for an already diagnosed disease. It should be noted that this approach is directly aligned with the latest draft guidelines from the (FDA) to pharma-

ceutical manufacturers searching for a cure to Alzheimer’s Disease: “Early Alzheimer’s Disease: Developing Drugs for Treatment — Guidance for Industry.” In these Draft Guidelines the FDA acknowledges that Stage 1 and Stage 2 Alzheimer’s Disease is very difficult to detect and often occurs years or decades IT HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN THAT before later stage DISRUPTIONS IN BRAIN CELL symptoms become evident. Geneaire ReTM Builder is focused on mitigating the neurological effects of aging rather than being a cure for a specific disease.

Longevity

OF BRAIN CELLS

Research during the last 10 years has led Genescient to the development of a formula consisting of multiple, interacting compounds that stimulate the expression of the hundreds of genomic sites responsible for brain function. In doing so they have pieced together the multi-dimensional “neural jigsaw puzzle” that seems to be responsible for the maintenance of the fundamental cellular biology of the brain. Stopping the degradation of the brain’s cellular processes during aging is now thought to be the key to preventing degeneration and promoting longevity. It is also apparent that this stimulation is most effective if addressed during the early stages of aging, which makes any long-term treatment with conventional pharmaceuticals difficult to justify from safety, cost and ethics perspectives. Geneaire ReBuilderTM is the commercially available supplement of the exclusively licensed, patented formula from Genescient’s research. The product is

www.southcoastmagazine.com

composed entirely of the same natural and safe components from the FDA’s GRAS List. Of course, users should always check with their physician before use. Geneaire is able to provide a supplement that has no reported side effects* that has benefited from accelerated clinical testing, and has been made available much faster than a typical pharmaceutical solution. Geneaire’s process means they have been able to keep the product affordable and widely available without prescription, through mainstream retail sales outlets such as Amazon. *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Geneaire ReBuilder™ is now available on Amazon Prime. It costs less than $2 per day. www.geneaire.com

GENEAIRE ReBUILDER TM Genome Analysis using AI Machine Learning and Cloud Analytics Over the last 10 years or so, the combination of the availability of practical Genome Analysis (Genomics) with the development of new Cloud-based Analytics and AI Machine Learning tools has enabled the UCI and Genescient scientists to expand and accelerate their research. Their specific focus is the causes of age-related brain function deterioration and the quest for compounds that can stabilize or prevent it. Comparison of the Methuselah and normal fruit fly genome sequences indicates that aging is intrinsically a complex process, with several thousand genome sequence variations discovered between the two species variants. Using the new numerical analysis tools to identify active versus passive sequences, over 500 genomic sites have been identified as significantly changed during Methuselah Fly evolution. It appears that the aging process fundamentally affects biology at the cellular level, and problems caused by the cells’ declining ability to perform basic functions such as waste product

Research excretion more seriously affect brain function than at other body sites.

For example, it has long been known that disruptions in brain cell function frequently lead to short- and long-term memory loss.

Identifying Solution Candidates

The search for compounds that can potentially activate or influence these genomic sites has also been assisted by the latest computer techniques. AIbased machine learning and analytics are used to comb a vast amount of published research and other documentation for potential substance candidates, resulting in identification of both core compounds and combinations of multiple compounds that promise effectiveness in specific formulations. Most importantly, the compounds in these formulations are all present in natural substances and can be derived from “GRAS List” components (Generally Recognized As Safe). This delivers several major advantages including a reduction in the time to perform effective clinical trials (the compounds induce far fewer side effects) and the removal of the requirement to partici-

pate in the very lengthy FDA approval process. The result is a greatly reduced time to availability and reduction in development cost which makes potential products much more affordable than pharmaceutical solutions.

Testing the Hypotheses Fruit fly research also plays an important role in testing potential compounds: flies are selectively bred with genomes modified with age-related diseases, then used as test subjects for likely compound candidates. Focus to date has been on specific diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Parkinson’s and Vascular Degeneration. Additional research is ongoing. This ongoing fruit fly research led to the development of a specific and patented formula that, by 2013, was ready to be clinically tested on human patients. A 15-month clinical study was conducted by Hoag Hospital (2013 – 2015) to test the effect of this formula on a population of mild and moderate Alzheimer patients. More information is available at www.geneaire.com

THE METHUSELAH FLIES The common fruit fly (Drosophila Melanogaster) has been used for genetics research since the inception of the discipline in the early 20th century. In the 90s it was the obvious choice to study the genomics of aging, mainly because its short lifespan enabled it to be studied over a large number of generations. Researchers at UCI and other institutions have been able to extend the flies’ lifespan by selective breeding – by only allowing the longer-lived flies in each generation (the “old breeders”) to mate. Over the years, repeated selective breeding results were very successful. By 2018, researchers had created a special generation of fruit flies with three times the lifespan of normal flies.

WHY FRUIT FLIES? • Flies have a short lifespan, making multi-generation study and research feasible. • There is an 80% overlap in fruit fly and human genomes. • Cellular Functions related to aging are the same between species.

CAPISTANO TRAILS

by Donna Friess

Perhaps this story has been long in the making. I think it may have begun in the late 1940s when I was a little girl growing up on the beach in the area of Venice, California, which is now the Marina Peninsula in Marina Del Rey. When I was a child the land that is now the beautiful Marina was nothing more than a swampy area with weeds that included a local dump-site. However, in one corner away from the weeds and refuse, was a magical area called Hoppyland where Hopalong Cassidy, a famous movie and television cowboy [William Boyd], would often appear. One day when I was about eight years-old I was visiting Hoppyland, when I got to meet him and he actually kissed me on the cheek. I was delirious with joy! Until then the even more famous cowboy, Roy Rogers, had been my favorite, but after that kiss, Hoppy had stolen my heart! Six years later my girl friend, Leanne, and I were visiting her parents’ friends for the week in Palos Verdes, California, when I met a boy, and again, lost my heart. He was a special boy, and I became so enthralled by his shy ways that I was unable to eat nor sleep for the several days remaining of the visit. My emotions were further unhinged by the fact that our friends’ mother came for an afternoon visit and seeing my 14 year-old state, began to sing, “the love bug’s bitten and you can’t sit still.” I was horrified that my feelings were so transparent to her, and relieved when the week ended, and we went home some sixty miles away.

AT The

trail HEAD

During the following school year, that quiet boy sent me a special delivery letter every single week. Plagued by shyness, and hampered by the cost of long distance, we did not even try to talk on the telephone, but feelings were running high. The next year my friend Leanne and I again visited the same friends. This time that boy came for us with his friend Jerry. They had invited us girls for a day’s outing. You can imagine our surprise when they arrived on horseback!!

CHAPTER 11

Tony Moiso recalled some of his favorite parade moments. For many years the Ranch joined in the parade, riding on a big wagon filled with Ranch people. More recently the Portola` Riders represent the Ranch. When I asked Tony, if the story about Larry Buchheim riding his horse through the Swallows Inn during Swallows Day was true or not? He smiled and replied, “Yes, for sure. I rode my horse through there as well!” We laughed. Later, I was to find a photograph of Tony on that horse in the Swallows Inn. When I asked for permission to use it, he offered me this advice, “Please remember: if you have the right horse-very calm, anyone can ride through the Swallows!” [I am amused at the notion that anyone might have of me riding my horse through the Swallows Inn. Well, maybe it’s not that crazy, considering those crosscountry horse races!] Tony went on to explain that for some years, the

Portolȃ Riders erected a big tent in the open field behind the Esslinger Building to house the after-parade party. One year a group of rowdy Marines came in to crash the party. Fred Love, who is not of large stature, confronted those Marines and got them out. Smiling at the memory, Tony concluded, “He is great; he’d fight if he had to!”

The parade has become an iconic symbol for San Juan, which celebrates the Mission, the swallows, and our equestrian life. The events surrounding La Fiesta de las Golondrinas are not only classic and traditional; they are also a way of binding the community together. While serving as a powerful economic engine, they are in many ways a cultural experience. People love parades, missions, animals, and just plain being together. An important by-product for our City is that when people gather they also spend money that supports the community’s everyday economy.

CHAPTER 13

This is the 70s. John and his wife live in Hidden Valley near Tar Farms. As a longtime horseman, John Clifton, reminded me, there were about ten of the men of our little community (including Dan Doyle, Don Shaw, John Clifton, Ken Friess, Stan Griffith, and Bob Youngren) who each purchased a roping steer to keep over at Jimmy Jackson’s horse operation. It was probably around 1975. Jimmy, a well known cowboy and ferrier, had leased the range land that stretched across where the Hunt Club would eventually be built to what would someday be Stone Ridge. John thought Jimmy probably had about 600 or 700 acres and 90 horses. There was an old barn on the place (the former Belford property, perhaps Father Quetu’s old horse barn?) The guys were all in, seeing themselves as ropers. They created a friendly competition, putting money in the pot for the winner of the roping contest. One day Jimmy Jackson called the newspaper to tell a reporter that a famous trick roper was going to be in town named “Monty Clifton.” When the reporter showed up to grab the scoop, John Clifton had to confess that it was a prank, he was neither a famous roper, nor named “Monty.” John says to this day, 40 some years later; many of his friends call him “Monty.” Many don’t know him by any

32 | S Magazine

www.southcoastmagazine.com

other name! To make matters worse, recently he joined a paddle board club, and even they call him “Monty!” John chuckled while he shared that with me. I wasn’t any too aware of the guys’ roping activities until one Sunday afternoon when my mother was visiting from Los Angeles. I decided to drive over and show her what fun the neighborhood dads were having. We crossed Ortega Highway which in those days was a very curvy two lane road, more crowded on the weekends than during the week, and headed up the dirt road to Jimmy’s. It turned out to be a day none of us would ever forget.

CHAPTER 17 At the end of the trail.

As our journey through the equestrian story that is San Juan’s comes to a close, I hope you have come to have, perhaps, a new respect for the countless ways in which the lives of our residents are enriched not only by the presence of horses, but through our devotion to the larger cultural celebration of our Western heritage. This book has been a way to memorialize the lived experience of some in a place such as ours. As the personal stories have shown; we have ridden horses in competitions, raced on them for sport, bet on them for fun, cantered with them on the trails, depended upon them as therapy assistants, have needed their help in transporting us, in cultivating the soil, in harvesting the crops, in carrying those crops to market, and in some cases even carried ammunition across enemy lines. Many of us have relied upon them for our livelihood as stable owners, trainers, veterinarians, breeders, grooms, competition judges, and/or feed and tack store owners. My hope is that this trip backward in time has allowed you moments of reflection, and, perhaps a renewed interest in cherishing our four-legged equine friends. We, with our children and grandchildren, and future generations, have the opportunity to help preserve this unique aspect of Western culture in our little corner of the planet, at the edge of the continent. My best, Donna www.drdonnafriess.com (949) 496-8895 or cell (949) 533-0810

SC HEALTH

The Doctor Is In present. available. reassuring.

Dr. Peter Czuleger might have been happiest as a doctor of an earlier time in history when his medical expertise, philosophy as a physician and reassuring words during office visits, house calls and phone calls would have been the norm. Instead, he finds himself a practicing physician in this time of focus on medical metrics and focus on technology as a tool for measuring outcomes. His style of medicine doesn't fit with standards set for number of minutes with each patient as he takes time with the people he sees as patients. While we, as patients, have been in the presence of the computer keyboard and monitor vs. the eyes and ears of an actual physician, Peter continues to look at and listen to his patients in determining the medical problem and the best way to communicate so we can hear him and are prepared for what needs to happen — sometimes it's nothing more than wait and other times tests to determine proper treatment or referrals to specialists. When I think about the times I've been in his care, the first thing I recall is his attention to me as a whole person. Many others would say the same thing. We all know he listens with compassion. We see it in his eyes and hear it in the way he asks questions, listens to concerns and then communicates what he thinks, how he is going to check things out and ultimately conveys his conclusions.

Yes, he uses technology as a tool. His training and his character — to be absolutely present for the person and whatever is happening from an imaginary medical issue based on a fear, a minor issue or something that might be very serious. He is always reassuring in his approach. He has the same respect for the smallest concern and the simplest question and frantic appeals for help because of intense pain or frightening symptoms. Smart phones and computer technology have become important tools in Peter's medical practice. He gladly incorporates technology in the mix of caring for people. Patients are able to reach him directly, by text or by voice mail at anytime from any place. Again, he is present, available and reassuring. Because of personal experience with Peter's country doctor approach in the 21st century, he became a member of the Mission Hospital Foundation staff, providing support for donors on an as-needed basis. He never disappointed us or our donors. Many decided they liked his style and regularly sought his advice and counsel. Peter is not confined to work in South Orange County, he is part of a group of local physicians who travel to worldwide disaster areas where he takes his skills and personality to care for people who are in traumatic situations. He may be in a disaster

zone for weeks at a time, returning home exhausted, but satisfied that he made a difference in the lives of many who were suffering. This is just another example of his kind and caring nature. Peter's mother once told the story of his comforting her while he stood behind her in the back seat while she was driving the car. All of his siblings were acting with utter chaos in the car and nothing seemed to calm the children. She then felt little pats on her shoulder and then heard Peter, her five-year-old boy say, "It's going to be okay mama." She never forgot it and saw that he carried this with him throughout his life and this is the key to his medical practice — a man with an observant and good mind, combined with a kind and compassionate heart. Dr. Czuleger was the recipient of the 2018 Sister Martha Ann Fitzpatrick Vision Award from the Mission Hospital Foundation. This award is bestowed on an individual (or group) who is committed to values that include: compassion, dignity, excellence, integrity and justice, and Peter exemplifies them. On the evening the award was presented to him, the people in the room came from all backgrounds — we were all proud to know him as we stood together united in giving him a standing ovation. Our 21st Century country doctor was honored for his kindness and compassion. Dr. Peter Czuleger, a man who shuns recognition, accepted this award with grace and dignity. I believe is was true to his nature — he let us recognize him, because it was something we needed more than he did.
