Ruth gave birth to Obed who gave birth to Jesse who fathered David. David like in David and Goliath. You know the kid who chooses off the entire Philistine army. Specifically the uncircumcised guy with the bad eyesight... AKA King David. Now, this is some heavy lifting pedigree from a lineal dissent perspective. This made Ruth the Great Grandmother of David; grandmother to Christ to the 29th power. Gloria, glory be to God in the highest. Glory being the operative word. Ruth Gloria is a glorious person. If everyone was like Ruth there would be no war or Trump versus Iran. We never saw Ruth impressed with this world. I've witnessed Ruth around gracious and humble millionaires and never saw her treat a busboy anything less than the manner she treated the gracious millionaires. A person would make one of the most ignorant statements, one that was socially impossible to imagine and Ruth's internal pulse may rise but externally the person speaking would never see any expression that may be construed as a response. Gloria the doxology beginning Gloria Partis used after Psalms and in a formal prayer (e.g. in the rosary) and Ruth named her child Rose Ruth Gloria and Rose — strength, and honor built in those names. And Ruth is the epitome of strength and honor as recently witnessed by all close to her life. Ruth Gloria Riley is my mother-in-law. And I listen to Ruth because she only speaks softly with a kindness, intellect, and knowledge and only when she knows exactly what she's speaking about. She's easy to listen to because Ruth never wears out your ears and does not waste her words. Ruth is 88 and can tell you where the next speed bump or pothole is three miles away from her home in Hemet, California. How many turns it is from her home to the Sizzler. We own part of a table there. Ruth is one of my lifetime dearest friends, a true woman of Christ. I just wanted Ruth to know how much I love her. Below is how Solomon describe his great, great grandmother. So apropos and to the purpose of women like Ruth Gloria. THERE ARE MANY VIRTUOUS AND CAPABLE WOMEN IN THE WORLD BUT YOU SURPASS THEM ALL. – Proverbs 31:29 WO....WOW...EVERY KNEE WILL BOW!

WINE VIBE

ocal San Clemente couple Gabe Whorley and Jourdan Zuccolotto had a vision to create a premium wine at an affordable price — and in March of this year, they showcased their dream at the Red O Restaurant in Newport Beach. The wine, Charrddy Party was inspired by the two 'fun-havers' who like to party and love a great bottle of Charrddy. They searched high and low to find that perfectly balanced Chardonnay with a light and crisp acidity with notes of apple, pear, lemon zest and a slight oak finish that coats your palette. The couple's slogan: "Basically this wine was made for you. Because, you are sophisticated and fun."

They chose Bianchi Winery in Paso Robles to create and bottle their wine. The exceptional wines of Bianchi are the product of the family’s dedication to producing ultra-premium wines on a great estate with select vineyards and artisan winemaking techniques. The winery in Paso Robles has a reputation for outstanding vineyards and outstanding wines, as well as its natural beauty. Boasting optimal soils and a Mediterranean climate ideal for growing premium varietal grapes, the Paso Robles A.V.A. has emerged as one of California's preeminent wine regions. SC HEALTH

PREVENT. perform. RESTORE. As we go through life, our bodies work hard to help us lead fulfilling lives. Unfortunately for many of us, as time goes on, our bones and joints seem to betray our hearts and minds. Things begin to wear out. All too often, our hips, knees, shoulders and ankles begin to stiffen up, swell, lock and pop, and generally cause us to feel misery while performing the very tasks that are otherwise enjoyable. Perhaps the reason is due to an old injury, or a familial tendency. Perhaps it’s due to wear and tear from osteoarthritis, or an inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis. These things can occur at any age. The most unfortunate experience this in their 40s and 50s, if not younger. Some live to a ripe old age before the joints go bad. Then there are some who never have significant joint deterioration, even if they live over 100 years. Historically, for the vast bulk of human history, such problems resulted in a progression toward a more sedentary

existence and eventually to complete immobility. Fortunately, with modern knowledge and technology, such a fate can be avoided and we have the ability for afflicted individuals to “restart” their lives. Since the middle and later parts of the last century, joint replacement surgery has been successfully employed to radically improve the productivity and well-being of millions of people, and things continue to improve!

INNOVATIONS IN JOINT REPLACEMENT

Thanks to technological advancements, prosthetic joints are now manufactured with new metal alloys, plastics and ceramics that have superior wear characteristics. There is less friction and overall, better durability. Bone cement is better and is used more judiciously. Implant designs have improved, which leads to improved range of motion, better durability and fewer complications like dislocations. Although there can be no guarantee as to how long any given implant will last, it is expected that the newer implants will endure for 20-or-30plus years. For these reasons, it is now standard that more and more patients in their 50s and younger are choosing joint replacement surgery. It’s not only the technology that continues to improve. There are advancements in medical care including surgical protocols – pre-op, intra-op, and post-op pain management, and rehab programs have resulted in drastically reduced pain, reduced complica-

www.southcoastmagazine.com

tions such as stiffness and infection, and shorter hospital stays. Just a few years ago, patients would rank their post-operative pain at an average of seven to eight out of 10. The length of hospitalization would be upwards of a week. Today, the average pain score is two to three out of 10, with an average length of hospital stay of less than three-days, with 80-pecent of patients are discharged to home. Anecdotally, one of my patients had her second knee replacement after having had the other one done 10years previously. Both were done by me. The patient was astounded at how much easier the recent surgery was. Despite being 10-years older the recovery was much quicker, post-op pain was profoundly less and post-op nausea was nonexistent.

OTHER OPTIONS

Just because joint replacement is easier and more successful than ever, it needs to be stressed that surgery is typically not the first line of treatment for joint pain. In fact, it should be one of the last options you explore, and only

KENT R. ADAMSON, M.D. Dr. Adamson specializes in general orthopedic surgery with a special interest in adult reconstructive surgery and knee replacement.

RESTARTING LIFE WITH FREEDOM FROM JOINT PAIN if other treatments aren’t working. Joint replacement surgery is a serious decision, and should be weighted carefully. Surgery is to be considered only when other treatments have failed or will not be successful. Other options may include medications such as ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen. Injection an physical therapy can also help lessen joint pail. Physical therapy can help. Sometimes a slight change in lifestyle can make all the difference. Just taking it a bit easier on rigorous workouts, while still exercising your joints regularly, can help reduce joint pain. In fact, the best way to keep your joints healthy is to use them. Though genetics is a major factor in the development of arthritis, your lifestyle and how you take care of your joints plays a big part. Just like your brain, exercising your joints regularly will keep them healthy. Whatever physical activity you enjoy, even if it’s as mild as taking a walk around the block, make sure you do it often. Be sure to keep the intensity of the activity within the reasonable limits of your body. Keep in mind that there is a difference between keeping your joints active and putting them through stress or even abuse. Make sure you are good to your joints, and your joints will be good to you.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

If you and your physician have tried to treat your joint pain and you are still finding your quality of life being limited, joint replacement could be the answer.

DENTAL FIRST

steps THERE ARE GREAT PRODUCTS OUT THERE THAT CAN HELP KEEP DECAY AT BAY!

everal years ago, my niece at age two, fell off her red wagon and landed facedown. She suffered a bruised, cut lip and loose front baby teeth…not to mention countless tears. We feared a toothless grin for her childhood future. Luckily, her baby teeth survived the ordeal and her toothy smile was saved. Baby teeth, also known as primary or “milk” teeth, are usually present from approximately six months to 12 years. Parents often ask why these teeth are important and still need our care considering they eventually will fall out. Basically, baby teeth provide chewing ability for proper digestion and nutrition, especially during the child’s growth years. They also are important in maintaining the needed space for adult teeth. Early loss of these teeth can lead to improper alignment and may adversely affect the normal development of the jawbone and surrounding muscles. These teeth also help your child learn to pronounce words properly and smile with confidence. Developmentally, these teeth are quite essential. Recently, studies have shown that children with decay in their 18 | S Magazine

baby teeth tend to have a higher chance of decay in their permanent, adult teeth. Routine dental visits should be a part of your child’s health care schedule, even at a young age. We strongly believe that achieving a lifetime of good dental health is aided by having a positive and hopefully enjoyable experience in the dental office. How many of us have been traumatized by a bad dental experience? It can almost ruin every dental experience afterwards. We do take the necessary time to reach a trust and comfort level before any dental work is to begin. For parents, there are several ways to help make your child’s dental experience a positive one. The American Dental Association recommends a child’s first visit take place by the age of one. During this appointment, risk of decay can be determined. More importantly, we make sure you are educated on proper diet and care for your child’s teeth. Before the initial appointment, if possible, prepare your child with positive descriptions and imagery. “The dentist is going to count your teeth” or “They will teach you how to brush to keep your teeth nice and clean.” Avoid words or phrases such as “shot” or “hurt”—these can make any of us fearful and nervous. Always brush

Your baby's first dental visit should occur within six months after the baby's first tooth appears, but no later than the child's first birthday.

Donna S. Bautista, DDS

General & Cosmetic Dentistry Dental Health & Wellness for the Family

Dr. Donna Bautista received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California at San Francisco, School of Dentistry. She practiced dentistry in San Francisco for 9 years before making her home in Orange County. Over her 20 years of practicing dentistry, she has striven to provide thoughtful and compassionate care for patients. She truly enjoys the relationships developed with her patients and through this, she finds great enjoyment in her work.

and floss before a dental appointment. Often, parents with a history of tooth decay are concerned their children have inherited this condition (e.g. “I think my daughter inherited my soft teeth”). However, to be more specific, research studies have shown that decay-causing bacteria can be transmitted from mother/father to infant. This evidence makes it very important for parents to practice good oral hygiene and keep their teeth in good shape. Bottom line, parents that have healthy mouths, free of active dental decay, are much more likely to have babies that are free of early dental decay. There are great products out there that can help keep decay at bay. Kids always get excited about getting a new toothbrush (especially when it has fun characters and designs on it). Battery-operated toothbrushes can

provide motivation to brush. Since they are still developing strength and coordination, children will need help with brushing until about the age of six. Floss your child’s teeth once two teeth begin to touch. There are great flossing products on the market that come in different colors and shapes— perfect for small hands to hold and learn to floss with. Another way to increase their interest in caring for teeth is to let him/her help you brush your teeth. Good dental hygiene is an ongoing, lifetime effort. This means that parental teaching and supervision must continue well into your child’s teen years. Teenagers’ schedules get busier and diets often include more sweets and soda. Soda is a big culprit in that its acidity dissolves the enamel of teeth. Cut back on the soda! This is also a time when your child can be in the midst of orth-

odontic treatment (braces). Braces work to improve dental health by straightening teeth and improving the bite. However, during orthodontic treatment, braces are an obstacle to getting teeth clean at home. Food constantly gets trapped in the braces and brushing and flossing is more difficult. Teens really need continual encouragement to put the extra effort into their routine. Frequent dental cleanings and checkups are recommended while your child is in braces to ensure no collateral damage takes place. No doubt, a child benefits from good habits early on—especially when it comes to teeth. (Hopefully, they will follow by example!) Think of baby teeth as a guide for adult teeth and take advantage of every opportunity to make dental care a priority for your child. Their healthy and appreciative smiles will be your long-term reward.

Whether a child’s dream is to be on stage or behind the camera, a doctor or an engineer, many Orange County parents and students point to Acting Academy for Kids as a place to foster life’s essential skills. Confidence, public speaking, creative thinking, discipline and teamwork, to name a few.

A Foundation to Last a Lifetime

Both Stephen and Maggie hold Master’s Degrees in teaching, and Stephen has a degree in Musical Theater Performance. During a decade of rapid growth, AA4K has expanded to meet growing demand, but has never lost its personal touch.

I’m always impressed with how much fun the kids have during a week with AA4K. So many smiles, new friends and new acting skills! – Galen Corbett, San Juan Capistrano Musical Theater Multiple Locations

AA4K has three convenient locations: the historic Cabrillo Playhouse in San Clemente, the Community Roots Academy in Laguna Niguel and the state-of-the art, 20,000-square-foot OC Music & Dance Theater, which shares a building with the Pacific Symphony in Irvine.

Love this place — the teachers are amazing and nurturing. My six-year-old started with summer camps three years ago and now, after more than four musicals, three recitals and piano lessons, would go every day if I let her! – Kelly Uygan, Ladera Ranch Summer Camps

AA4K’s summer camps are a great way to learn new skills, expand talents and meet new friends. Open to children ages 4-14 years old, each week-long program offers a mix of acting, singing and dance, culminating in a Friday afternoon performance. This year’s line-up includes The Greatest Showman, Mary Poppins Returns, Aladdin’s Magic Lamp, Annie and Harry Potter.

The centerpiece of AA4K is its musical theater program. Every Fall, Winter and Spring, multiple casts—each with no more than 30 actors—embark on a three-month, intensive journey to bring a well-known musical to life. Here, students get to shine on stage and learn everything that goes on behind the scenes as well. This spring, young performers are invited to “come and build a snowman” with the Orange County premiere of Disney’s FROZEN. Registrations are now open, with auditions beginning in early April and performances scheduled for June.

AA4K Studios: For Kids & Teens

Everyone loves the stage, but there’s a little something called “film” as well. AA4K Studios is a film conservatory where kids and teens ages 7-18 gain first-hand experience both in front of and behind the camera. Each student writes, shoots, directs, acts and assistant-edits their own short film. Their big screen debuts are showcased at an end-of-season premiere gala, where friends, families and fellow film lovers can watch their creative talents come to life on the big screen. While the focus on this program is educational, each student gets a professional reel with their work and earns official IMBD credit.

Private Lessons: Vocal & Piano

For students eager to take their skills to the next level, one-on-one guidance and professional training is available. Acting Academy for Kids offers private lessons and coaching for voice and piano to help students learn new skills and hone their existing talents.

A Steadfast Commitment: In Sickness and in Health

As many are aware, the success of Acting Academy for Kids has been an achievement to celebrate, but also filled with challenging moments where the lesson continues to be “always keep the faith.” While nine months pregnant with their second child, Maggie underwent a surgical biopsy on her neck. On the day she gave birth, she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma—an untreatable and incurable cancer. After considerable introspection and

S Magazines / 949.498.0705

prayer, the Zygos made a decision to not only keep Acting Academy for Kids alive, but to make sure it thrived, setting an example for every child to never give up on your dreams, always follow your passion and light up the world with your gifts—no matter what. Every day, they are rewarded by the joy and pride the feel when they see students grow and thrive under their leadership.

Acting Academy for Kids plays a major role in my life. I have met wonderful life friends and have developed great acting skills. It’s a huge comfort zone for me and lets me have fun. I am very thankful for AA4K! – Ryder Flowers, Age 11 To learn more about Acting Academy for Kids or register for Frozen, Summer Camps or private lessons, log on to www.actingacademyforkids. com or send an email to actingacademy4kids@gmail.com.

putting kids first ISSAC CHARTER SCHOOL

Do you want your child to study in a respectful and enriched environment in which he or she can learn to speak, understand, read, write, and communicate in Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and English? Do you want your children to experi-

ence a STEM program that includes hands-on science, computer programming and individualized math instruction?

Is it important for your child to

learn soft skills such as building friendships through dialogue, giving and receiving respectful feedback, navigating disappointments and breakdowns, and carefully managing commitments and promises? The International School for Science and Culture (ISSAC), a public charter school approved in March 2019 by the Orange County Board of Education and to be located at the border of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, offers such a personalized and project-based program aimed at cultivating global citizens empowered to build a peaceful society. Class sizes will be about 25. ISSAC will open August 22, 2019, with grades TK through 5th, and will expand to 8th grade. Charter schools are public schools, supported by the public funds allocated to each student who attends the school each day. There is no tuition cost to parents. Like all public schools, ISSAC

will provide a Free and Appropriate Public Education, a GATE program to provide enrichment, support for English Learners to become English proficient, and Special Education in accordance with IEPs and all associated processes. ISSAC can accept students from Newport-Mesa district as well as from surrounding areas. Charter schools are schools of choice, offering families an educational alternative within the public school system. No student is forced to attend or to continue to attend a charter school if they prefer at any time to attend their home school in their District. The founding team of ISSAC believes all children are capable of superior academic performance, joyful engagement with world languages and cultures, and social-emotional excellence. The program offered at ISSAC is geared to produce these results with an approach that is fine-tuned to accommodate the individual student, rather than with an expectation that all students in a given grade will advance together in lockstep fashion. For the student who can advance rapidly, ISSAC provides the ability to explore and learn with full support. For the student who requires greater support to meet grade level expectations, ISSAC provides exactly that support. Differentiated learning occurs in ISSAC through flexible grouping in a rotational model classroom. Project-based learning is implemented with heterogeneous stu-

ISSAC's academic program is called STREAM, adding Reading/Writing and Arts to the traditional Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Arts at ISSAC include integrated Performing Arts in academic subjects including in the foreign language classes, and a freestanding voice and instruments music class once a week. ISSAC students will also challenge themselves in Visual Arts to represent reality, experience modes of art from various cultures, and express themselves artistically with a variety of methods/materials etc., once again integrated with academic subjects, and as a freestanding weekly class.

ISSAC is geared to accommodate the individual student, rather than expecting all students to advance together.

All students at ISSAC will have the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. ISSAC offers a foreign language exposure program focused on oral communication and dialogue, and understanding the cultures associated with these languages. ISSAC will use the arts and technology in innovative ways to support this cultural understanding; reading and writing in the target languages will naturally follow. Social-Emotional Learning will lead to ISSAC students developing a superior ability to coordinate action, set and achieve personal goals, and contribute to the society in which they live. students will participate in standardized testing in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and PE in accordance with these standards, and ISSAC will publish results in the annual School Accountability Report Card (SARC), as District schools do. There will be periodic additional testing within the school year to support and focus teaching and learning efforts. All teachers of core subjects will be appropriately credentialed. Parent communication will be managed through ParentSquare, along with ISSAC’s Student Information System, School Pathways. Parent participation is welcome at ISSAC, though it is not required. Parent groups such as School Advisory Council and the English Language Advisory Council and the PTA, as well as the LCAP process will provide formal opportunities for parent input, and additionally, there will be opportunities to directly support campus life and provide input to the Principal. The campus is nestled in a quiet neighborhood on 18th Street at the border of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, adjacent to a spacious park with soccer goals and a playground. The school will have exclusive use of the green space each school day till noon. The school day will be 7.5 hours long, running from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. approximately, with a 4.5 hour minimum day on Wednesday to allow time for teacher professional development. Access to the campus and all student activities will be managed with the utmost attention to safety and security. All employees and volunteers working with students will be fingerprinted for security clearance. WE ARE GRATEFUL It has been well over a year since Justin Rider and his team of dedicated professionals opened the doors to One-Eleven Coastal. Their aspiration to deliver on a "ranch" aesthetic while celebrating the coastal lifestyle came to life. It was not that long ago that the hills behind our little beach town were home to one of the greatest ranch operations in our country. Rider admits, "It had to take a village" to get this restaurant running to the level of quality and service the people of South County expect and deserve. "We've had tremendous help from the best in the business and are forever grateful for the time, effort, and quality of work that has gone into the creation of this special place." Owner, Justin Rider is surrounded by an all-star cast of family, friends, and staff who have made this experience not only possible, but one of the best of his life. Marcus Osterhout, who happens to be a life-long friend of Rider's, is

a valuable partner and co-general manager at One-Eleven Coastal. His high-level restaurant experience and outgoing spirit and determination have made him a large part of the success and forward progress One-Eleven has experienced. "Of the several people we could not have done this without, he is at the top of the list. So, if you see Marcus at the restaurant or even around town, be sure to say hello!" Not only is Tammy Hallen a pillar in Justin's life, but the Matriarch of One-Eleven Coastal. She has been God-mother to both Justin and Marcus since they were teenagers and has supported them greatly in this endeavor. "She literally 'bet the ranch' that her boys could make something special on Del Mar. Tammy's support has been paramount to the success of One-Eleven Coastal." If you have visited One-Eleven Coastal you may have noticed a bright smiling young lady that has a little more leeway to harass the boss.

Savannah Rider (Justin's daughter) has been the first face you see when you walk in on the weekend evenings since day one. Besides being the hostess, she takes great pride in the work being done at One-Eleven Coastal. "We have had the unique experience of working together. There are very few fathers who are fortunate enough to have that experience, and while it has its challenges sometimes, working with Savannah has brought an immense amount of joy and pride to my life. I can promise, there is no way I could be more proud." It was easy to see why Rider is so proud when we asked Savannah about her favorite part of working at One-Eleven Coastal, "Meeting the people and constantly learning about the community that I live and go to school in. I also take a lot of pride in telling our story. I love telling people how we built One-Eleven with our own hands."

We are so grateful for Justin's continued support of our program, it really makes a difference. –Coach Jamie Ortiz Rider says that his affiliation with the program has felt more like they sponsor One-Eleven and he is very "blessed" to have such a great group to be part of.

The One-Eleven Coastal concept was born in the San Clemente office of Spot 49, Inc. and was a product of the incredibly creative minds on that team. Lead by life-long local Bernie Wohlfarth, the Spot 49 marketing team is setting the bar for affordable and effective local marketing. Their logo isn't on everything they do, but it doesn't take long to recognize the mark they've left on many local businesses. From branding to websites, social media to e-mail marketing — we owe much of our success to the collaborative way that Spot 49 immersed themselves in our One-Eleven family.

John Merlino is a "who's who" of the culinary world. For many years he has been the brains and creativity behind some of the most prominent steak houses and corporate restaurants in America. You can imagine how lucky we were to have been able to solicit his advice and participate as he instilled his magic in the kitchen at One-Eleven. John has a new venture now —we have been lucky enough to test pilot with him: The Soul Patty! John has poured his heart and soul (and thousands of hours of experience) into this new concept. Ask for it by name; you will be glad you did.

The design and structure of a restaurant is paramount to its success. Enter Dave Donaldson. Dave is a familiar face on Del Mar as the original proprietor of the BeachFire. With proven success behind him, Dave has reinvented himself as a skilled consultant and restaurant broker. He has worked tirelessly to help with various aspects of the business at OneEleven Coastal. Dave's in-depth knowledge of the food and beverage industry makes him a valuable asset.

THE LOBSTER SHACK • SAN CLEMENTE Words by Dina Scaglione Published by The Local DISH Magazine June 2019

Once upon a time, a ten-year-old boy from Venice Beach set out on a bonding trip with his father to the East Coast. This innocuous road trip became the stuff dreams are made of, a jaunt that introduced a young boy to lobster rolls, and planted a seed that grew into what is now The Lobster Shack. Most of us can recall those palpable moments that define our life’s calling. Moments frozen in time where we remember every smell, every taste. That’s the impetus for The Lobster Shack, the newest eatery in Old Town San Clemente that adds West Coast flair to quintessential East Coast fare. New England transplants will be pleas-

antly surprised by brioche so light and lobster so sweet, they’ll swear they’re back in Cape Cod. The Lobster Shack’s brioche rolls are baked fresh daily with flour imported from back east to give it a light, airy texture. Fresh fish is flown in daily, mostly from the East Coast; nothing is ever frozen or reheated. Seafood is generously layered, without heavy, fussy dressing to over-complicate the experience. Your choice of chunky lobster, succulent crab or flavorful shrimp is piled high and held together with a light lemon butter aioli sauce. Share the ‘Trio for Two” where you can experience all three savory staples in a marriage of perfection — served with your choice of two sides: Blue Cheese Cole Slaw, New

England Baked Beans, or Cape Cod Kettle Chips. Start your meal off with a cup of house-made clam chowder or lobster bisque, piping hot and richly flavored. “Think globally and support locally” is owner Dan Naughton’s mission for The Lobster Shack. As a big believer in supporting the local community and preserving our oceans, anything left over at the end of the day is donated to a local food bank that feeds those in need. In his commitment to sustainable cooking methods, Dan abides by the United Nation’s sustainable development plan to reduce his global footprint and only sources from fisheries that adhere to the FAO’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Fishing.

Sundays from 11 AM to 6 PM, the Lobster Shack delivers an experience you don't often find in South OC and gladly one you won’t soon forget. 111 W Avenida Palizda, San Clemente www.thelobstershack.us

LAURA MILLER

For all the wrong reasons, after a stressful day’s work at Ohio Bell, I attended night classes at the downtown campus of Cleveland State University. I had to hurry from my last class at 10 pm to a bus stop in a nefarious part of town; my last chance to return to my home in the safety of the suburbs. I have many stories about this bus stop and rides on that bus. Here is one of them.

Waiting for the Late Bus As a Storm Threatens (A poetically embellished true story)

He passes so close my breath involuntarily halts so that I do not inhale the disease of his scent. Raging headwaters of decay pour from unplumbed chasms deep in his reeking core. Muttering and weaving, he moves on, but just when I think I am safe, he stops, as though he recognizes me then turns back. Defiantly, he strides toward me. An open and filthy raincoat flaps around his knees in a whirlwind of haste and the quickening storm. A brick wall at my back, the dark churning Universe that is him closing in before me. I am trapped and afraid. His mouth, a gaping hole framed by cracked lips and strings of phlegm, twists into a snarl. “Jezebel,” he screams, pointing a long sharp-nailed finger. “Harlot who lays with kings and beggars.” We are now eye to eye. He is rocking, I am frozen. We stand toe to toe in the now silent gale-haunted night. Moments that seem hours pass.

I force myself to meet his yellowed rheumy eyes and see fires of madness where fires of love should burn. I see a lifetime of tears evaporating in the flames. I recoil from the filth, derangement, threats of violence. I wonder, what does he see when he looks at me? I am no longer afraid. Was his mouth ever the taste that someone longed for? Have those lips ever shared the sweet communion of a tender kiss that sealed a pledge? Has that snarl ever been a heart melting smile? Who broke this heart and mind? What forgotten promise led him to this moment? What howling tempest blew out his light? What Spirit sent me here? The wind picks up, street trash swirls around us. Lightening flashes and in the thunder, I hear a voice, “This is my beloved son. See him. Hear him. Love him.” He steps beside me very still, looking down. It begins to rain. My bus pulls up, the doors wheeze open. Wet, cold and trembling, I step on and find a seat. Beyond my reflection in the window I see him pacing, ranting, alone in the worsening storm.

SC HEALTH For most everyone, achieving good dental health is a conscious decision. However, our oral care routine can sometimes be done in an unconscious manner. Some of us can probably brush our teeth with our eyes closed and be half asleep. Flossing fits under the conscious part of our routine and is not second nature for many. How about regular dental checkups? These require some conscious decision-making as well. Even though a visit to your dentist can be an anxiety-producing event, not making the time or the effort for these appointments can leave a gap (no pun intended) in trying to achieve good oral health. One way to allay any anxiety is to be informed. When it comes to health, ignorance should not be bliss. More and more, we need to be informed patients to help us make the best decisions and feel comfortable with them.

Why do I have a problem when I have regular checkups and dental cleanings?

You are done with your dental X-rays, exam, and cleaning and your dentist recommends some work to be done. A concern I oftentimes hear from patients is that they get their teeth cleaned regularly with checkups and don’t understand why they still need to have dental work such as a filling or a crown. What did they do wrong? To explain, regular maintenance with dental cleanings does not prevent your teeth from breaking down from decay or wear over time. Dental cleanings are mainly meant to maintain the health of the gums and jaw bone. The gums and the jaw bone are important in that they serve as the anchors to our teeth. Without healthy

gums and bone, our teeth would get loose and fall out. On the other hand, a filling or a crown is to repair damage (e.g. decay or fracture) to a tooth. Regular dental exams with dental x-rays determine if there is new decay, broken fillings or other problems brewing that need to be fixed right away.

I use mouthwash everyday, does this help?

In a word — no. Mouthwashes are our ever-persistent fantasy of dental care in a bottle. They do some things like make your breath fresh (for a short while) and give your mouth that burning feeling making you think that germs must have been killed in there. Sorry to burst your bubble, but nothing can replace the good ol’ toothbrush, toothpaste (fluoride) and floss.

KIDS CLUB

Great Futures Start Here... One of the best parts for the children attending the Boys & Girls Club in San Clemente is that it remains a place where a kid can still be a kid. And mostly without the interference of the 24/7 connectedness to electronics, social media, the outside world of go, go, go, and the complicated place where everyone needs to succeed and is afraid to fail. Once you arrive and check-in at the front desk, it’s off to grab a snack with a couple of friends from school, see your group leader for the day and head off into a world that is not overly planned or scheduled. If you’re interested in just chilling for a bit, that’s cool, pick a spot and go for it. Play ball if you want to, go in the art

room, participate in a fun game or daily contest, but do so at your leisure. Sure, you’ll be strongly encouraged to step into the learning center to complete some homework, and for certain members on the Club’s “homework watch list,” they are going to get a little extra encouragement. But for the most part the Boys & Girls Club, located in the heart of the city in Bonita Canyon Park off of El Camino, is a melting pot of children from in and around our city and it remains simple and uncomplicated. The staff is there to keep you safe, help guide you into activities, develop a bond with you during your time there, but they’re not there to hold your hand and be your parachute to give you a soft landing at every turn. You’re going to participate in things and your team is going to lose. You are not going to get a trophy just for showing up. You’re going to play pool or ping-pong against someone who is better than you. You’re going to build character and be a part of a place where you feel like you belong and have some influence. In a recent tour of the Club with the cur-

rent CEO Terry Hughes, who’s been at the helm since late 2017, it’s clear that the members enjoy themselves, are having plenty of fun and that the areas are supervised with dynamic, warm individuals who enjoy interacting with the kids. “We employ a mix of older High School and College Students, many of whom grew up here in this setting, along with some adults and full-time professionals who have chosen this as a career which forms a team of leaders who have many different interests and that’s a benefit to everyone. The more they can be exposed to, the better. We try very hard to encourage the children to do a wide variety of activities and we always hope to make a connection with every single child.” Mr. Hughes cited the increased average daily attendance and membership numbers to go along with survey results and parental feedback which have been positive. He said, “we’re always trying to stay current and improve upon what we do, and in today’s world, families have many choices. We are willing to work very hard to gain their trust and are proud that so

www.southcoastmagazine.com

many families are willing to trust us with the children.” In 2018, the Club served almost 2,000 school aged children after school, during the vacations and summer months, and through sports leagues. The Club remains a great value for families. During the school year membership is less than $100 and includes free snacks and meals over the entire school year, after-school program, and summer camp is $65 per week for families who register in time. And, they are always willing to work with families with payment plans or discounts for families who do not have the ability to pay. Some of the Clubs signature programs are College Bound which focuses on helping first generation students gain college acceptance with financial aid packages, Torch & Keystone Clubs which focus on leadership opportunities through civic engagement and the Youth Sports leagues in basketball, volleyball, soccer and baseball. If you’ve got kids, the Boys & Girls Club has something for you. Stop in or go check them out at www.bgcsca.org.

THE SOLUTION TO OCEAN POLLUTION

erSmart

Follow these tips to prevent ocean pollution before it rains: • Adjust your sprinkler system or turn it off when rain is predicted. • Apply compost or fertilizer to landscapes after it rains – not before. • Remove debris from roof gutters and drainage ditches. Place organic material in the green waste cart. • Pick up pet waste in your yard and while on walks.
