What these individuals all have in common — is they’re electric. Their personalities are electric. And, their mannerisms are electric.

Ayn Rand wrote it best in, “The Virtue of Selfishness,” she had a very provocative thesis about ethics. She definitely promoted self-interest. My question is; how do you govern self-interest?

Well, that’s the difference between stars and superstars and being great.

The great ones govern their own self-interest. Men like Bobby Kennedy and Mohammad Ali left measures of donated self-interest. They made a difference in simple lives.

The thread running through all of the essays is Rand's definition of selfishness as 'rational selfinterest,' with the idea that one has the right to assure one's own survival, to pursue happiness, and to own the fruits of one's labor without having to sacrifice any of these to others against one's will.

You have to have some type of selfishness for anything you’re going to be successful at. Sometimes, selfishness is mistaken for arrogance or cockiness. But the business world is not humble and humble will not get you there in the business world.

You have to have a certain drive and tenacity to survive and to thrive.

When you evaluate greatness, the great ones all hold a little bit of that selfish cockiness and a hint of arrogance.

And here is what the great ones have in common: they’re electricity lights up a room when they walk in. Like lightning. They are not just stars, they are the universe. Individuals whom if they weren’t chasing clocks or scoring points, they may sell more nuts and bolts than any individual in America. They would achieve their own greatness. Their arena may be an overseas factory or the top of a crane on a high-rise.

The thread that runs through all true, great stars that truly understand the value of rational self-interest is, they give and they help. They give selflessness — that’s their gift, so they have the true virtue of selfishness.

These individuals are the ones who make a difference at the local Boys and Girls Clubs, they support the Cheer Team, and they step up when a local girl is facing injustice and they help.

Recently, someone called my friend cocky, arrogant, and selfish, and the only word that came to mind for me was, jealous. And then I thought of the selfish, and the helping, giving star my friend is.

He is a star, he is a superstar . . . . . . with selfish greatness!

Speaking of measures left behind and true selflessness…her name was Charlene and I must confess, throughout my entire childhood and most of my adult life, I never knew it. She was always Kim's mom, she was Mr. Stalcup's wife, and she was Mrs. Stalcup. My family knew the Stalcups for over 50 years and I never realized her first name was Charlene. The spirit of respect never let me know her first name.

It was her 80th birthday and everyone kept calling out the name Charlene. I'm a little slow, but it finally hit me that Mrs. Stalcup was “Charlene."

BONING up on ORTHOPEDICS RESTARTING LIFE WITH FREEDOM FROM JOINT PAIN As we go through life, our bodies work hard to help us lead fulfilling lives. Unfortunately for many of us, as time goes on, our bones and joints seem to betray our hearts and minds. Things begin to wear out. All too often, our hips, knees, shoulders and ankles begin to stiffen up, swell, lock and pop, and generally cause us to feel misery while performing the very tasks that are otherwise enjoyable.

Perhaps the reason is due to an old injury, or a familial tendency. Perhaps it’s due to wear and tear from osteoarthritis, or an inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis. These things can occur at any age. The most unfortunate experience this in their 40s and 50s, if not younger. Some live to a ripe old age before the joints go bad. Then there are some who never have significant joint deterioration, even if they live to over 100 years.

Historically, for the vast bulk of human history, such problems resulted in a progression toward a more sedentary existence and eventually to complete immobility. Fortunately, with modern knowledge and technology, such a fate can be avoided and we have the ability for afflicted individuals to “restart” their lives. Since the middle and later parts of the last century, joint replacement surgery has been successfully employed to radically improve the productivity and well-being of millions of people. And things continue to improve!

INNOVATIONS IN JOINT REPLACEMENT

Thanks to technological advancements, prosthetic joints are now manufactured with new metal alloys, plastics and ceramics that have superior wear characteristics. There is less friction and overall better durability. Bone cement is better and is used more judiciously. Implant designs have im8 | S Magazine

proved, which leads to improved range of motion, better durability and fewer complications such as dislocations.

Although there can be no guarantee as to how long any given implant will last, it is expected that the newer implants will endure for 20-or-30-plus years. For these reasons, it is now standard that more and more patients in their 50s and younger are choosing joint replacement surgery.

It’s not only the technology that continues to improve. There are advancements in medical care including surgical protocols – pre-op, intra-op, and post-op pain management, and rehab programs have resulted in drastically reduced pain, reduced complications such as stiffness and infection, and shorter hospital stays. Just a few years ago, patients would rank their post-operative pain at an average of seven-to-eight-out-of-10. The length of hospitalization would be upwards of a week. Today, the average pain score is two-to-three-out-of-10, with an average length of hospital stay of less than three-days, and 80-pecent of patients are discharged to home.

Anecdotally, one of my patients had her second knee replacement after having had the other one done 10- years previously. Both were done by me. The patient was astounded at how much easier the recent surgery was. Despite being 10-years older the recovery was

much quicker, post-op pain was profoundly less and post-op nausea was nonexistent.

OTHER OPTIONS

Just because joint replacement is easier and more successful than ever, it needs to be stressed that surgery is typically not the first line of treatment for joint pain. In fact, it should be one of the last options you explore, and only if other treatments aren’t working.

Joint replacement surgery is a serious decision, and should be weighted carefully.

Surgery is to be considered only when other treatments have failed or will not be successful. Other options may include medications such as ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen. Injections can help lessen joint pain as well. Physical therapy can help. Sometimes a slight change in lifestyle can make all the difference. Just taking it a bit easier on rigorous workouts, while still exercising your joints regularly, can help reduce joint pain.

In fact, believe it or not, the best way to keep your joints healthy is to use them.

Though genetics is a major factor in the development of arthritis, your lifestyle and how you take care of your joints plays a big part. Just like your brain, exercising your joints regularly will keep them healthy. Whatever physical activity you enjoy, even if it’s as mild as taking a walk around the block, make sure you do it often. Be sure to keep the intensity of the activity within the reasonable limits of your body. Keep in mind that there is a difference between keeping your joints active and putting them through stress or even abuse.

Make sure you are good to your joints, and your joints will be good to you.

KENT R. ADAMSON, M.D. Dr. Adamson specializes in general orthopedic surgery with a special interest in adult reconstructive surgery and knee replacement.

A native of Minnesota, he graduated summa cum laude from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He went to medical school at the University of Minnesota, where he graduated with highest honors. At Mission Hospital, he has served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery, as well as current Chief of the Medical Staff.

Dr. Adamson has also served as President of the Orange County Medical Association and currently serves as a state delegate to the California Medical Association. He also is a current Board member of the California Orthopaedic Association and is active in leadership within the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. It’s August 7, 1985, Riverside, California; Rubidoux to be exact and around 96 degrees. A 15-year-old boy sits strumming his guitar over, over and over in an uninsulated garage.

He listens to his favorite rock and roll and attacks the guitar; he doesn’t know how to play. And although he has never had a guitar lesson, he truly believes he is special and is destined to be a superstar.

His profuse sweating is only matched by his determination, spiced with a dash of anger. He strums and ponders the government issued grilled cheese sandwich he is about to eat on his break.

He'll attack that grilled cheese sandwich just like he does the guitar. This boy does nothing without intensity. A couple years later he'll drop out of high school.

August 7th, 1988, a young man and his friend drive from Rubidoux, California to answer a PennySaver ad to install some type of siding for $2.50 an hour.

Somewhere along the Ramona Express they get off in Hemet and hit a stoplight. Big yellow clouds begin to storm the sky. They are in shock when they realize its butterflies; the most beautiful creation these two young men had ever

witnessed or encountered at this point in their lives.

Abruptly, an older, gruffly, looking man in the car next to them yells, "Is this not an awesome site?" The two young men concur. The man then asked them what they were doing in Hemet. They explained the PennySaver gig. Mr. Gruffly asked, “You boys want to work for $4 an hour and help me with some electrical work?”

Jump forward twenty years later to Gucci

Guilty Electric Company in San Diego, California; (the name has been changed to protect the guilty). The company's top salesperson, Bryant, is summoned to the CEO's office. He actually skips down the hallway with anticipation of the $100,000 bonus his sale numbers have earned him.

As he enters the CEOs office, he gets a hitch in his gait. More company than expected. CEO, Vice President and Sales Manager? The Sales Manager and VP proceed to try and tell their superstar salesman there has been a misunderstanding or miscommunication regarding his bonuses for sales performance.

Red faced, and with rage in his blue, piercing eyes, this young man (who was growing up fast), ignores everything the Sales Manager and VP are saying, and laser beams the CEO’s eyes with his own stating, "You know exactly what we agreed to, but you did not believe I would ever possibly hit those bonus projections and numbers. The only understanding or communication you and I need today is for you to give me my freaking bonus!”

The owner starts to posture and says, “Well Bryant, here's the deal….” Before the word “deal” was completed, the

company keys, ID and anything else associated with Gucci Guilty Electric was midair landing on the big boss's desk.

He points to the Sales Manager and says, "Forget you," points to the VP and says, "Forget you" and points to the big boss and says, “and most of all forget you!” Bryant does an about-face; his strut and gait are back, of course with more intensity.

The boss man retaliates with, "If you really want to make that kind of money young man, start your own business."

Bryant, without missing a step in his gait, and showing no remorse or any indication of looking back barks, “Good idea, Coach!”

August 7th, 2008 — meet DANA ELECTRIC, INC. This time its August 7th on purpose. Bryant is giddy. Following his past employer’s advice, Bryant Edward Rugg launches Dana Electric, Inc. and strategically locates in San Clemente, California. Halfway between the San Diego and Los Angeles markets; Vegas is close and Hawaii is the dream.

The first step this guy took in life was when he hit the ground, ready to rock and roll. His business and management styles are a cross between Mick Jagger

Bryant was raised in the height of 70s social crossfire and never forgot where he came from. In the late 60s, 70s and 80s, Rubidoux/Riverside and the Inland Empire, as a whole, was one of the ultimate social crossfire zones in America. At the time, down the freeway you had San Bernardino, cruising “E” Street, Johnson Hall, Delmann Heights and Muscoy, but Rubidoux, Bloomington and places like Casa Blanca in Riverside were no joke. These are the roots of Bryant Rugg.

The rest is history, the company’s net worth is now estimated between $15 and $20 million, and the Ruggs maintain a lifestyle focused on family and community, splitting time between San Clemente and Hawaii. Dana Electric, Inc. donates heavily to the community; specifically concentrating on education. His kids all attended public school when J. Serra or Mater Dei were easy options.

Socialization is extremely important to the Ruggs, and when the kids and parents took higher education options under consideration, they wanted to play for the home team. The Ruggs bought into the ONE-TOWN, ONE-TEAM concept. The whole family valued the 97% graduation rate for Capistrano Unified School District, so San Clemente High School it was for Jessica Rugg (who was a four-year cheerleader at San Clemente High School) and the other little Ruggs!

The Southern California Hospice Foundation (SCHF), a nonprofit dedicated to helping enhance the quality of life for terminally ill patients, will host the 9th Annual Wine Soiree Spectacular presented by the Marjorie Mosher Schmidt Foundation at the iconic Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin on Saturday, September 8th. Las Vegas house prices were higher in June than they were a year earlier, but sales volume fell. The median sales price of previously owned single-family homes was $290,000 last month, down 1.7 percent from May but up 12.7 percent from June 2017, according to a new report from the GLVAR. Buyers picked up 3,265 single-family homes in June, up 4 percent from May but down 8.9 percent year-over-year.

Inventory also remained well below last year's levels, as 4,335 houses were on the market without offers at the end of June, up 5.3 percent from May but down 16.2 percent from last June, according to the GLVAR.

TRIED and true DENTAL HABITS As a dentist, part of my job is to motivate and encourage patients towards good dental habits. However, for most patients, being told to brush and floss is not enough.

Offering up alternative solutions, suggesting a change in one's dental routine at home, or simply reviewing the basic techniques with a mirror can make a difference in improving one’s oral health.

Here are some things to consider to keep your teeth in tip-top shape:

1.

The basics of brushing: Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush for at least two to three minutes twice a day. Really spend the time to get in there and reach all the spots. Don’t forget to focus on brushing close to the gumline where most food and bacterial dental plaque settle. Also, begin brushing the hardestto-reach areas first (usually the very back and surfaces next to the tongue)—our attention is greatest at the beginning of a task and therefore this ensures that nothing gets missed.

2. Flossing requires time and patience.

Most people report that they do not floss because they do not have the time.

Make the time! If you can’t floss once a day (which is ideal), floss when you can and do it correctly. (Floss correctly by sliding it on the side surfaces of teeth and not just sliding it in between teeth.)

Flossing really makes a difference in your overall dental health. You can even floss while watching television in your favorite chair. By the way, if you notice your gums bleeding from flossing, don’t stop.

This bleeding is an indication of inflammation and could be present because you haven’t been flossing. The bleeding should subside and get better in about a week or so. Lastly, although these may not take the place of flossing, other tools can be useful to clean in between teeth also. These include specially-shaped toothpicks (wooden or plastic) and small interdental brushes. Also consider an oral irrigation device that is designed to direct water between teeth. You’d be amazed at what it cleans out from between your teeth and lands in the sink bowl. Check out your local drugstore’s oral care section to see what’s available.

3. Be mindful of how certain food tex-

tures stick to teeth. Starchy foods tend to be chewy and get caught between the teeth and stick to the smooth surfaces more. Food that sits around your teeth and gums all day encourages more plaque buildup and a chance for cavities or gum disease to develop. Think about how a bowl of pasta would affect your teeth as opposed to a crunchy, crisp apple. Consider snacking on foods that “cleanse” our teeth. Coincidentally, these “cleansing” foods are also nutritionally good for you (e.g. apples, carrots, celery).

Good oral health is mostly achieved by what you do at home on a daily basis.

Take the steps to brush and floss correctly and do visit your dentist on a regular basis. My husband and I have a popular mantra at home, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” For dental health, this means, you can’t have healthy teeth without doing the work to get there.

Many of the things we do everyday can erode tooth enamel. Erosion of our enamel can cause teeth sensitivity and/ or discoloration. We expose our teeth to acid through certain foods we eat and beverages we drink. Beverages containing acid include citric juices, carbonated drinks, sports drinks, and even fizzy mineral water. Lessen the erosion of enamel by rinsing with water after your teeth have been exposed to acidic foods or beverages. Try sipping acidic drinks through a straw to minimize contact with the teeth. Also, wait at least one hour before

grew up moving from country to country.

In the late 80s, Mike was just another street skate punk going to shows, hanging out and trying to find himself.

He began singing in his first band in the mid 90s called COS, but soon called it quits and joined the band Lewa, as their singer and frontman. The same year he formed the band Mugshot-76 with his best friend Markus aka Wax. The band soon ended after going through many stages and changes, with everyone moving on in different directions. Syco Mike remained dedicated to what he loved and followed his life’s passion.

Departing California for good, he met up with Pipes and Pints in Prague in 2008, where he was hired immediately as their singer and frontman. The band released a demo that featured new versions of Syco Mike’s music from his old band Mugshot-76. Tomas on guitar and Mike’s voice gave it the edge. They hit the road and toured Central Europe, both as a headlining band and in support of The Porters, Society Parasites, and many others. Recording a 5-track EP — was the beginning of a new venture that went extremely well.

Their overwhelming success was due to the amazing performances by Syco Mike. His shows inspired, always different and his songs came from the heart, drawing even larger crowds. In November 2009, Syco

Mike and Tomas released the band’s full-length album titled, Until We Die, in cooperation of Wolverine Records from Europe and Unrepentant Records from North and South America. They continued playing live shows for the remainder of 2010.

In 2012, Darien Rundall, a producer, arrived in Prague to produce the second album called, "Found and Lost." The record was a success and they received the Angel Award, the highest music Oscar in the CZ Republic. After years of touring, 2016 became too much chaos for the band­— from personal to financial issues, Mike and Tommy called it quits.

While still on tour and finishing up his shows, Syco Mike received news from his fiancée in France their relationship had ended. This was one of the worst flights back to France he ever had taken.

Just when he thought things couldn’t get any worse, he found himself having to move. Packing up all his belongings with little sleep, he arranged a last minute visit with his stepson and hit the road with his two dogs, Honey and Mushu.

After arriving in California, living out of his car and in hotels for the first few weeks, Mike was able to find a job as a driver for Uber and Lyft. Although it was tough, he soon found his balance again.

Currently living in Orange County, Mike is pursuing his music and kiddingly states, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” He is determined to succeed, now working closely

Good vibes and smooth grooves filled the air as the 24th Annual Hyatt Regency Newport Beach Jazz Festival (NBJF) took over the hotel’s grounds June 1-3, 2018. This annual event brings together first-class musicians and appreciative audiences for three days of great music and fun in the sun.

Shelley Callahan, Director of Events for the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, has spearheaded this event since 2013 and takes great pride in its success.

The hotel spares no expense in making sure this signature event and venue continues to be successful every year.

This was the first jazz festival for new General Manager Sid Ramani, but he has committed his continued support of the event and vowed to “assist the hotel moving forward on its musical journey and making memories….”.

Featuring a balanced blend of well known, established artists and new, emerging talents, this festival appeals to a wide variety of musical tastes, and brings fans from all over the country.

With two stages of entertainment, the music was ongoing and the party in process; add to that a variety of vendors providing experiences in food, clothing, collectibles, AND perfect weather – no argument - this was the place to be! A crowning touch was the dynamic and much loved MC Pat Prescott from 94.7 The Wave , a long time co-sponsor of the event.
