A
cting Academy for Kids was started in Stephen Zygo’s 4th grade classroom at St. Mary’s School in Aliso Viejo. Since that day back in 2008, Stephen and Maggie Zygo have never looked back, pouring their hearts and soul into their acting kiddos. Seeking a venue to call their own, they partnered with Camino Real Playhouse, starting with an enrollment of a whopping two students. Fast forward eight years later, they have had the opportunity to serve over 10,000 kids in the South Orange County area as well as welcoming their two sons into the world, Julian (26 months) and Jesse (11 months). Acting Academy for Kids (AA4K) is a full-service performing arts academy serving students ages 4 to 17, with classes in acting, voice, instrumental, musical theater and film. Stephen and Maggie Zygos’ success has not been without storms. Around the same time they found out they were pregnant with their second son, they also found out the Playhouse they have called “home” for eight years, would be closing their doors shortly down the road. Not only would they be searching for a new home for AA4K, but Maggie would

also come to find some strange lumps in her neck around month 5 of pregnancy. Three days before their second son was born, Maggie had a surgical biopsy procedure. The results were devastating. What ultimately would be only hours before their second son was born, Maggie received the call she had early stage Non-Hodgkin’s Follicular Lymphoma, an incurable cancer. After the birth of their second son, the growing family of four spent every day for 4 weeks traveling to Anaheim Kaiser Center where Maggie underwent radiation treatment on her neck. They were hopeful the radiation would prove successful. Their hopes were crushed when the scans came back proving the radiaition was successful in her neck but unfortunately the cancer had spread to her abdomen progressing her diagnosis to a stage 3/4.
Old Testament for comfort and peace. In the midst of trials and tribulations, Stephen and Maggie Zygo have decided to push forward and continue their dream for AA4K. With the transition from the Playhouse in San Juan Capistrano set for March 31, expansion has been on the horizon for AA4K for many months. With an upstanding reputation amongst families in the South Orange County, Stephen and Maggie are excited to announce AA4K will be kicking off their 3 new locations this April! The first of the locations will be a partnership with Community Roots Academy Foundation. Their Performing Arts Center can seat up to 400 people and will be upgraded with over $50,000 in new sound, lighting and audio/ visual technologies making it the perfect venue for any performer as well as one of AA4K’s new homes. The second location will be a partnership by a brand new per-

forming arts school in Irvine that shares a building with the Pacific Symphony, OC Music and Dance. The location is equipped with a beautiful café and exquisite lobby, parent lobby, three dance studios, an enormous dressing room, two board/classrooms, a recording studio, six piano/rehearsal rooms and a state-of-theart theatre that can seat 140 people with a $150,000 LED stage screen! row balcony and grand communal lobby with diner-style seats that sit roughly 45 to relax while the kids rehearse. Plans for the venue are nothing short of extraordinary. A stage will be built, dressing rooms created, a TV/Film Conservatory implemented and a piano/recording studio designed. It will be outfitted in vintage 1920’s Hollywood style! In the meantime, it is suitable to begin musical theatre rehearsals which will be taking place in April! Keep a watch out for, “Z Playhouse!”
most gratifying parts of his job.” AA4K has seen kid after kid grow up and go to college knowing that their programs have played a major role in the childs decision in choosing a major and/or career path keeping Stephen and Maggie pushing forward. “I have watched best friends blossom, play dates and sleep-overs transpire, cast parties thrown and trips to Segerstrom and even NYC go down through our programs. Knowing that we provided that opportunity means the world to me!” –Stephen Zygo.
The last location is an answer to many prayers not only for the Zygos, but to many of the AA4K families who have petitioned for an answer. AA4K’s new “home turf,” will be within the Holiday Inn Express off of Pico in San Clemente where an old restaurant sat vacant for over 10 years. When Stephen first walked into the location his eyes welled up with tears as he knew they had finally found AA4K’s home of homes. It is indeed a work in progress but the venue is spacious and wonderfully majestic to the eyes. It’s a two-story open space with roughly 10,000 square feet of room to build a stage, seating for 120 with a front
With new and exciting ventures on the horizon, the Acting Academy for Kids will maintain their core values and passion for their kids. AA4K prides themselves on only employing teachers that have spent significant amounts of time in a classroom setting along with professional credentials in the industry. “This is crucial for competency in the classroom,” says Stephen. Similar to a school classroom, AA4K does not like to exceed 30 kids per class and their TV/Film Conservatory maxes out at 16 students. Stephen states, “Being able to see a kid go from a shy and insecure little one to a confident and poised young performer is one of the
The Zygo’s ultimate dream is to be the staple in the South Orange County Community for generations to come and to constantly adapt with the times and do art that is family-friendly yet relevant to the kids and teens. “We want to be the foremost leader in arts education in Orange County and through strategic partnerships with schools and foundations, that is very possible!” –Stephen Zygo
Stephen and Maggie, our thoughts and prayers are with you as you not only dominate cancer but continue to spread your love and passion for the arts in our community!

Giving Back to Mother Earth { SHON MILLER }
The thing is, it all starts with baby steps. So we are starting with our beautiful, small beach town and proving
an Clemente Beach Conservation Program was created in an effort to preserve their precious beaches. With our city rapidly expanding and tourism increasing they have taken it upon themselves, as a community, to make an effort to sustain the beauty of our gem located on the California coast. Their immediate goal is to raise awareness for beach and ocean conservation by taking action and keeping our city clean. "Our goal is to start small and create a buzz locally. Eventually we want to expand our influence to the whole coast of California. From there we can expand to areas that desperately need our help — such as Bali. The thing is, it all starts with baby steps. So we are starting with our beautiful, small beach town and
proving to everyone that we CAN make a difference if we come together as a community and express love and gratitude for the place we call home." – Shon Miller (Founder) Miller has been organizing these cleanups and has been providing volunteers with donuts, coffee, waters, lunch, and drinks afterwards. He looks to partner with local businesses to continue to offer enticing perks to volunteers. "It's all about making these clean-up events more of a fun thing to do with friends. Our cleans-ups are by no means a chore. Every one of our events is a party where we just so happen to give back to mother earth. Everyone just has an amazingly fun day — and they get to leave feeling great about themselves. The feeling we get as a group protecting our home is like
no other. You have to experience it for yourself!" SCBCP is actively enrolled in the "AdoptA-Beach" program through the California Coastal Commission and will be adopting a new beach once every 3 months. The program is doing 1-2 beach clean ups per month and teaming up with the other non- profits, local schools, and other local organizations in order to spread their message to the younger generations. Their board of directors is made up of San Clemente natives, international surfboard inventors, product innovators, non-profit industry leaders, and state park rangers. All of which have a dedicated, long term outlook for this program. Their long term aim is to reduce the overuse of single-use plastic as well as construct plans to rid our city of the disgusting cigarette litter epidemic! San Clemente Beach Conservation Program currently has an Instagram and Facebook page up and operational but their website is currently under construction. They also have T-shirts and stickers available to anyone looking to donate to the cause. With their strong branding and passionate board of directors ready to take charge — they have shifted their sites globally. The goal is to be much more than a local beach janitorial service. They are looking to raise awareness for sustainability in the surf world and beyond. SCBCP is already working with teams in Australia, France, Portugal, Guatemala,

They have begun production on some very cutting-edge, up-cycled surfboards and accessories. Their aim is to create a recycle revolution! The team has raised all funds, grassroots style to complete their non-profit 501(c)(3) licensing for 2017. With a burning desire to implement immediate and substantive positive change in and around San Clemente, this team is sure to continue to gain speed. In less than five months they have held 20 plus clean-ups with over 500 pounds of trash collected, been published in the SC Times with seven articles and three cover stories. They have also been featured in Stab Magazine, OC Register, and a twopage spread in Surf Art Magazine. Once they prove their ability to manifest that change in their own city they are eager to set their sights abroad and spread their influence as far as humanly possible. new lifestyles
Glenn’s father, Robert H. Butcher moved to the Valley in 1945 and ten years later with his wife, Theela, chose Big Bear as their hometown. Bob began his lumber career working for other lumber companies, including Minder Lumber, while Theela worked for the local School District. Bob founded Butcher's Block & Building Materials in 1980 — starting small with only one employee. Since then, they have grown from a small lumberyard into one of the largest in the area. Butcher's Block successfully bought out another existing lumber company, previously known as Homestead Supplies. Later, they were able to extend the business into a full retail hardware store carrying a full line of paint, plumbing and electrical supplies. This family business now has over 30 employees, as well as an additional lumber and hardware store in Lucerne Valley since July of 2005. Bob worked daily running Butcher's Block until his untimely death in 2007, leaving his son, Glenn, to take over the family business. With hard work and dedication, Butcher's Block is proud to say that they are the only family owned and operated lumberyard and home center in Big Bear. Not only were Bob and his wife, Theela, graduates from Big Bear High, but their children, Glenn and Amy, were as well. The entire family has devoted their hearts

Their involvement and support of Rotary and all youth sports has been automatic for over three decades. The Butchers are also Diamond supporters of the Steven G. Mihaylo Big Bear High School Education Foundation. Glenn has been at Butcher's Block for over 23 years. He worked side by side with his father, Bob, and started out working in the yard and gradually moved his way up to the contractor's desk nearly 15 years ago where he continues to enjoy the interaction with all of the homeowners and contractors, most life-long friends. A true "family-owned and operated," business.
Andy Meadors sums up Glenn Butcher’s character perfectly... "Glenn works with the old ethic of treating people right first, then earning their trust and respect for the means of an honest, professional and lasting relationship – whether you’re a retail customer buying a broom or a high-end contractor buying a million dollars of materials. This last Christmas, he and Buffey gave every employee a Benjamin bill and told them personally to pay it forward to someone in more need of it. This is the kind of moral value Glenn strives to instill in those around him.
Whether you're fixing up the house or starting a project from scratch, the folks at Butcher's Block & Building Materials in Big Bear Lake will make sure you find all the right gizmos and gadgets.

My experience with Glenn over the years both personally and professionally is a perfect 5-star rating — I can’t think of a more upstanding and humble person in Big Bear than Glenn Butcher. The town of Big Bear is a little bit better because of him. His humility is real and his contentment with happiness is evident. So hey SouthCoast Magazine readers — if you’re still reading my words and come to Big Bear, know that Glenn Butcher of Butcher’s Block hardware store, his family and his employee family are the, “Real Deal Holyfield.” Strive to meet him and his wife Buffey. They make our town proud."

Acting Academy for
STALCUP
By Linda Vujnov
tephen and Maggie Zygo’s dream of opening a thriving performing arts school for kids and teens in Orange County came to fruition in 2007 when the couple launched Acting Academy for Kids out of Stephen’s 4th grade classroom. This was at the height of home costs soaring and money spent on outside endeavors for kids dropping, a challenge for the Orange County majority. Having met in grad school in Hawaii while getting Master Degrees in Education, the Zygo’s knew their dream would be a long shot. Both were working full time, Stephen as a 4th grade teacher and Maggie as an Advisor in the Department of Education at UCI, enjoying their jobs and using their talents in the workplace. However, in 2008, due to budget cuts, they were both let go from their positions.

“Our faith has been the foundation to get us through all of this,” said Stephen. The Zygo family needs, and are depending on, an unimaginably positive prognosis not only for Maggie, but also for the future of their family business, which faces a March 31st eviction. The couple continues their quest to locate a forever home for Acting Academy for Kids as they navigate the tricky waters of cancer treatments with two small baby boys in tow. The highs and lows the Zygo family faced might debilitate your average family, but Stephen and Maggie rely on their faith, the strength of their marriage and love for their boys, and a heavy dose of belief in miracles. Their unwavering positivity and force in fighting the odds is an inspiration to anyone facing challenges in their lives. If you feel led to learn more about Acting Academy for Kids’ Award-Winning programs, visit www. ActingAcademyForKids.com. A gofundme campaign has also been established to assist Maggie with her cancer-related treatments www.gofundme.com/Love4MAZ. The Zygo’s hope to see all of you on their stage this summer!

A day that should have been marked with unequivocal joy at the birth of their second boy, Jesse, would forever be linked to a devastating medical diagnosis. Their positivity was challenged further upon receiving news that while the 3 ½ weeks of radiation to her neck was successful, the cancer had spread to Maggie’s abdomen and a potential tumor near her heart.

Riding the success, they achieved another dream — buying a home in Orange County for their growing family. But in a terrible stroke of irony, on the joyful day their home purchase was complete, Stephen and Maggie were told that the Camino Real Playhouse would be shuttered and sold, leaving their business homeless. The Zygo’s, busy caring for an active one-year-old and pregnant with a second child, relied heavily on their faith, believing they would somehow find a home for their thriving Acting Academy. As the search for a new location continued, Maggie visited her doctor to talk about a lump that she noticed in her neck. While nine months pregnant, she underwent minor surgery to remove the lump for biopsy, confident that the results would be encouraging. A few days later while Maggie was in for a routine non-stress test, she was told the baby’s heart rate was irregular and needed to be delivered that day by C-section. Maggie, unable to leave labor and delivery contacted Stephen who was frantically moving boxes and furniture into their new home while tending to their toddler, Julian. Maggie already shell-shocked from news she received earlier that morning, she tried to

The Zygo’s took a big leap of faith and partnered with the Camino Real Playhouse in San Juan Capistrano to continue Acting Academy for Kids on a larger scale, www. actingacademyforkids.com. In spite of the failing economy, the Academy grew. Making the Academy “all about the kids and keeping the families happy” was paramount in the way the couple managed their programs. They hired professionally-trained, credentialed teachers and offered vocal training, television and film courses, instrumental music, in addition to musical theater and their award winning summer camps. The Academy has since trained over 7,000 students!

USC freshman quarterback Sam Darnold has no intention of changing who he is. Written by Frankie Darnold
rudging as a member of the crowd, I make my way through the Los Angeles Coliseum tunnel with my parents. Growing up a USC football fan I am no stranger to those uneven stadium steps, the smell of bacon-wrapped hotdogs and the crafty avoidance of oncoming fans. Holding my father’s hand as young as six years old, we would head up to our nosebleed seats and enjoy opposing teams try their best to beat our adorned Trojans. These days, the adventure feels a bit more nerve wracking and much more special than the times before. My brother sprints out of the tunnel in his cardinal and gold uniform as the starting quarterback for USC. The name “Sam Darnold” has become a national headline this past fall. He has been named the “Magician,” “Assassin,” and “Incredi-boy” on sports networks that he used to watch each morning before leaving for school. He has earned accolades in his freshman season that his childhood heroes were never able to achieve. From sporting Matt Leinart’s jersey on school picture day, to eventually being named MVP of the 2017 Rose Bowl Game, Sam has remained committed to accomplishing all of his goals.
THE NAME SAM DARNOLD HAS He sets his standards high and refuses to quit until he reaches them. No shortcuts. I have always admired this about my brother. Just recently it seems BECOME A NATIONAL like the rest of the college football world is joining me. When I watch him play, he looks no different than he did when we would play HEADLINE THIS catch in the front yard. I know the look he has under that helmet all too well. Stoic and focused, his eyes are fixed on the task ahead of him just as he would be PAST FALL. on the pitchers mound in little league, working on his jump shot on our backyard basketball hoop, and even in the co-ed beach volleyball tournament that I begged him to play in with me. Sam has always taken sports seriously, and today that is no different.
Even with the hype and attention that has surrounded him this 2016 season, Sam has remained the same. His matter-of-fact attitude about football and life has continued to ground us as a family. Words are rarely enough to utter our awe for what Sam has already accomplished, but his responses allow us to understand and remember that he’s simply playing football – working to master his craft every day. The little kid that grew up down the hall from me has become the player that he once pretended to be. He’s earned his own jersey that little kids will wear to their kindergarten pictures, just as he wore number 11 as long as it was clean. If you asked me if I ever thought I’d see my little brother out on that field, I’d nod my head because Sam told me he would be.

OLE’S TAVERN THE HEART OF THE TRIANGLE
by Gerrit Hale
After 25 years in the Washington DC Area, coming back to So Cal is a new experience with old roots. The subtle and not so subtle changes make me glad I had the chance to grow up here. Being back makes me not only appreciate the past but the present as well. One of those new appreciations is OLE’s Tavern in the San Clemente Triangle. People kept talking about the triangle and I had no clue until I came down on a recent Thursday night. Popping into Goody’s and the Red Fox brought back memories but when I stopped into OLE’s, I was pleasantly surprised. The vibe was hopping and the crowd was a great dichotic mix of old, like myself and young, and everything in between. I ordered a beer, and met up with my friends towards the back where we shot a few games of pool. Everyone was friendly as www.southcoastmagazine.com
conversations flowed among old friends and new. After a few games of pool and a couple of cold beers, I noticed people walking around with slices of pizza. Turns out that OLE’s provides free pizza at the end of the night to their hungry hoard of customers. That was a surprise and a novel concept. I’ve never experienced anything like that. Traveling throughout the world and much of this country, I have to say OLE’s is definitely in the top ten in my books. It gives off the kind of vibe like the Bull and Finch in Boston. OLE’s has great specials and happy hour prices as well as free tacos with drink purchase on Tuesday nights. Weekends can get quite crowded but its a great place to check out, hang out, let your hair down and have a good time. WWW.OLESTAVERN.COM 949.498.9400 127 So El Camino Real, San Clemente
