Thank you very much for preparing my son Ivan for the Math SAT. He received a score of 800 on the SAT II 2c! Many thanks to Mrs. Katz and the other RSM teachers: Mrs. Kozlova for spring break teaching; Mrs. Rifkin for teaching SAT II 1c (Ivan got 800 last year), and Mrs. Khavinson for helpful assistance and creating a warm atmosphere in the school. – Olga Atochina

R

ecently, NPR ran a story detailing the "Russian Math" phenomenon — the growth of the Russian School of Mathematics from a kitchen-table passion project to a school that serves over 20,000 students across the country. But what is "Russian Math," and how does it differ from other approaches? “Russian Math” is built on the foundational principle that the cognitive ability of a child — the power to think and reason — is not predetermined at birth, but can actually be developed over time. And that math is by far the best tool for this development.

Curriculum

In a “Russian Math” curriculum — the first pillar of this approach — students are taught to think both on a concrete and abstract level, to employ reason, logic and utilize previous knowledge. Take the problem below, for example, which students will encounter in our curriculum in the 2nd and 3rd grades.

Solve problems b and c using the result of problem a. 634 - 182 = 452 635 - 182 = ? 635 - 181 = ? We do not expect the child to calculate the answers using specific quantities but rather to reason through the problems at an abstract level. The classroom conversation might go something like this...

Students will suggest different ways to find the answer; the teacher will then challenge them to compare the first and second examples and explore how the difference between them might lead to a different result. Eventually, mostly on their own, children will discover that: b) 635 - 182 would equal 453, because you’re taking the same number away from a number that is one greater, leaving you with a difference that is one greater. c) We just learned that 635 - 182 equal 453. Now 635 - 181 would equal 454, because you’re taking a number that is one less away from the same number, leaving you with a difference that is one greater. The teacher will then help students express their thoughts through the language of algebra, replacing the numbers with symbols A and B, and rewriting example C) above as A - ( B -1 ) = ( A - B ) + 1.

• Students begin multi-step problems as early as 1st grade, learning to build on previous results to progress towards the solution. Sufficient practice and repeated success with challenging yet accessible problems develops a mind-set that is open for ex-ploration and challenges. Over time, top scores on standardized tests and mathe-matical olympiads become a natural by-product. More importantly, math becomes a beautiful, exciting, and a fun tool that empowers the mind. To learn more about the program, please schedule free evaluation (949) 864-6592 missionviejo@russianschool.com www.russianschool.com/mission-viejo 25571 Marguerite Parkway, Suite G Mission Viejo, CA 92692

These problems offer a glimpse into some of the main elements of the Russian Math curriculum: • Rather than working with specific quantities, students use abstractions and explore the relationships between them, developing a language for this type of thinking process. • Students learn not to fear something that looks difficult, or even impossible. They draw from their reasoning ability and problemsolving experience to navigate through problems. www.russianschool.com/mission-viejo S Magazines / 949.498.0705

Have a formal gown or tuxedo that needs some TLC for an upcoming special event? Or how about some work attire that needs some freshening up? Perhaps you even have household items like comforters, sofa covers or draperies that need a deep clean before the holidays. Wether it’s those common household items or your most coveted article of clothing, Bonded Cleaners & Laundry in San Clemente is your onestop shop to get the job done. Owners Scott English and Greg Suding know a thing or two about keeping San Clemente Clean and looking sharp, which may be why they’re named “Best Dry Cleaner” by the San Clemente Times and “Neighborhood Favorite” by Nextdoor year after year. Established in 1981 by Scott’s father, Ben English, the full-service cleaner and laundry quickly became a staple for

San Clemente locals. Customers from neighboring communities even made the drive across town so they could have their items serviced at Bonded. Scott took over for his dad after years of working in the shop and learning the trade. In 2001 Greg Suding came into the picture, bringing with him top-notch experience in customer service after 30 years working for American Airlines. The two have been running the business together ever since. It was a natural fit when Scott took over for his dad after years of working in the shop and learning the trade. The team became complete in 2001 when Greg Suding came on board, bringing with him the top-notch customer service experience he acquired after 15 years working for American Airlines. The two have been keeping San Clemente clean together ever since.

When you pull into Bonded Cleaners & Laundry you’ll be in and out in no time thanks to the convenient parking and friendly staff that await you inside. Did we mention that these guys have a vast knowledge of the textile industry and keep up with the latest designs, materials and cleaning methods? Check out their Yelp reviews and you will find a long list of happy clients. Complete customer satisfaction is what they strive for. Not only do customers sing the praises of Bonded Cleaners & Laundry, but local charities have been deeply impacted by the business as well. Bonded has poured both time and resources into organizations like Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens and Cabrillo Playhouse. They also support academic and athletic events for the elementary, middle and high schools in surrounding communities.

When they’re not busy working and making customers happy, you will find Scott, Greg and their German shorthaired pointer, “Duke” of San Clemente, enjoying the many hiking trails and beaches around town. Scott and Greg also enjoy working out and dining out locally and are firm believers in shopping locally to support their fellow local business owners. Did we mention that the shop is dog friendly? Customers are always welcome to bring their furry friends into Bonded Cleaners to say “Hi.” Next time you need any of your clothing or household items professionally cleaned, let Bonded Cleaners and Laundry do the dirty work for you— you’ll be glad you did! eggs benedict

HERE'S THE RECIPE INGREDIENTS 4 large Whole Eggs 2 large Egg Yolks 1 tablespoons Dry White Wine 1/2 stick Unsalted Butter, melted 3/4 tablespoons fresh Lemon Juice 1/8 teaspoon Tabasco 4 slices of Applewood-smoked Bacon 3 ounces Baby Arugula 1 tablespoons Distilled White Vinegar 1 Avocado 2 English muffins, split and toasted

PREPARATION In a heatproof bowl set over a pot of barely simmering water, whisk the 2 egg yolks with the wine and a pinch of salt until doubled in volume and slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. Gradually add the melted butter, whisking constantly, until a thick, creamy sauce forms, about 5 minutes. Whisk in the lemon juice and Tabasco and season the hollandaise with salt. Keep the hollandaise sauce warm, whisking occasionally. In a skillet, cook the bacon over moderate heat, turning once, until crisp, 6 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel–lined plate. Pour off all but 1 tablespoon of the fat in the skillet. Add the arugula, toss quickly in the hot oil and transfer to a plate; season with salt. Bring a large, deep skillet of water to a simmer over moderate heat and add the vinegar. One at a time, break the eggs into a small bowl and pour them into the simmering water, leaving plenty of space between them. Poach the eggs until the whites are set and the yolks are still runny, about 4 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, carefully transfer the eggs to a paper towel-lined plate. Arrange the toasted English muffin halves on plates and top with the bacon, poached eggs, avocado, arugula and hollandaise sauce. Serve immediately. 14 | S Magazines

mimosas HERE'S THE TIPS Classic mimosas require just two ingredients: dry sparkling wine and orange juice.

1. The best Champagne for mimosas isn’t actually Champagne. For mimosas, opt for less-expensive Cava or Prosecco. Cava is from Spain and Prosecco is from Italy, but they’re both delicious dry sparkling wines that mix well with juice. 2. Cold, fresh orange juice is best for mimosas. If you’re buying orange juice at the store, opt for high-quality, not from concentrate, pulp-free orange juice.

A great start to a new day!

KIDS THE ATER

Setting the Stage for Success

OC PARENTS (AND KIDS!) AGREE: ACTING ACADEMY FOR KIDS BUILDS CONFIDENCE, DEVELOPS LIFE SKILLS AND FOSTERS LASTING FRIENDSHIPS

Acting Academy for Kids is great for fostering friendships, learning how to be on a team and be flexible about taking on different roles. The team is energetic and vibrant, and my kids learned how to speak in front of large audiences. – Anik Rubalcava, Laguna Hills BY JENNIFER BENSON

If you’ve ever listened to an Academy Awards speech, there are many influential people the winners on stage thank each year. Parents for opening opportunities. Teachers who were the first to see potential. Enthusiastic audiences and fans who sent encouragement along the way. By the same token, if you’ve ever browsed through LinkedIn profiles, you’ll see plenty of thanks as well. Strong foundations for professional success—like teamwork, public speaking, discipline, commitment and creative thinking—don’t happen by accident. The “thanks” to those who helped build such a strong foundation for career success may be more behind-the-scenes than on big awards shows, but it shines through every achievement nonetheless. Whether a child’s dream is to be on stage or behind the camera, a doctor or an engineer, many Orange County parents and students point to Acting Academy for Kids as a place to foster life’s essential skills. Confidence, public speaking, networking, discipline and teamwork, to name a few. 22 | S Magazines

A Foundation to Last a Lifetime

Founded in 2007 by husband and wife team Stephen and Maggie Zygo, Acting Academy for Kids has grown from a youth musical theater startup to a leader in the Orange County performing arts community. To date, AA4K has brought the performing arts aspirations of more than 10,000 local youth to life on stage, on film, and behind the lights and cameras. This success is no accident. Both Stephen and Maggie hold Master’s Degrees in teaching, and Stephen has a degree in Musical Theater Performance as well. During a decade of rapid growth, Acting Academy for Kids has expanded to meet growing demand, but has never lost its personal touch that makes every show, every relationship, feel like family. “The organization and communication are unmatchable, which is a huge blessing,” says Shannon S. of Riverside in one Yelp review. “They are very personable, great at what they do, and go the extra mile.”

Multiple Locations, One Orange County Institution

Acting Academy for Kids operates out of three convenient Orange County lo-

cations: the historic Cabrillo Playhouse in San Clemente, the Community Roots Academy in Laguna Niguel and the state-of-the-art, 20,000-squarefoot OC Music & Dance Theater, which shares a building with the Pacific Symphony in Irvine. As part of its mission to inspire a deeper appreciation of the arts among local youth, AA4K offers many opportunities to experience nearly every aspect of the theater experience, from summer camps and Jr. directing to vocals and acting. “Love this place--the teachers are amazing and nurturing,” says Kelly Uygan of Ladera Ranch. “They offer a fantastic variety of programs. Realistic stage setting, plus production, costumes and props are professional and creative. My six-year-old started with summer camps three years ago and now, after more than four musicals, three recitals and piano lessons, would go there every day if I let her!”

Summer Camps

Whether a child is a seasoned veteran or exploring new interests, Acting Academy for Kids’ summer performing arts camps are a great way to learn new skills, expand talents and meet new friends.

www.southcoastmagazine.com

“My daughter loves coming here every summer for an acting camp!" says Sasha Ackley from San Juan Capistrano. “Mr. Zygo makes it the best. She has done it now five years in a row and we are more than happy every time!” Open to children 4-14 years old, each week-long program offers a mix of acting, singing and dance, culminating in a Friday afternoon performance open to parents and other cheering fans. This year’s line-up, which was just announced in February, includes such popular hits as The Greatest Showman, Mary Poppins Returns, Aladdin’s Magic Lamp, Annie and Harry Potter. “I’m always impressed with how much fun the kids have during a week with Acting Academy for Kids,” says Galen Corbett of San Juan Capistrano. “So many smiles, new friends and new acting skills!”

Musical Theater

The centerpiece of Acting Academy for Kids is its musical theater program. Every Fall, Winter and Spring, multiple casts—each with no more than 30 actors—embark on a three-month, intensive journey to bring a well-known musical to life.

Acting Academy for Kids has been a wonderful place for my son to learn and grow. Since participating in his first week-long summer camp almost four years ago and then on to many full productions, my son has grown to be a strong, confident adolescent. AA4K has helped him to feel comfortable speaking in front of others and to explore different areas of his creativity. – Lindy Flowers, Mission Viejo

From lighting and singing to choreography and costume design, students not only get to shine on stage, but they learn everything that goes on behind the scenes to make the show a success as well. Auditions are held on the first day of class and everyone gets a role in each full-scale production. This spring, young performers are invited to “come and build a snowman” with the Orange County premiere of Disney’s FROZEN. Registrations are now open, with auditions beginning in early April and performances scheduled for June. “We have two daughters who have participated in multiple AA4K musical theatre offerings, and their experiences have been nothing short of amazing,” says Ryan Vogt-Lowell of Aliso Viejo. “Their professional and dedicated staff is organized, caring and patient throughout the entire process, and is genuinely committed to developing the children’s confidence, self-esteem and team working skills.” Twelve-year-old Macey Bernabe of Trabuco Canyon agrees, saying “Acting Academy for Kids taught me

really good acting techniques. The directors are the nicest ever and they are always there to help you whenever. They always have smiles on their faces, too!”

interviews on the red carpet, attendance by the mayor, a cast party and more. Very fun for the kids and the parents.”

AA4K Studios: For Kids & Teens

For students eager to take their skills to the next level, one-on-one guidance and professional training is available. Acting Academy for Kids offers private lessons and coaching for voice and piano to help students learn new skills and hone their existing talents.

Everyone loves the stage, but in today’s digital age, there’s a little something called “film” as well. AA4K Studios is a film conservatory where kids, tweens and teens ages 7-18 gain first-hand experience both in front of and behind the camera. Each student writes, shoots, directs, acts and assistant-edits their own short film. Their big screen debuts are showcased at an exclusive, end-of-season premiere gala, where friends, families and fellow film lovers can watch their creative talents come to life on the big screen. While the focus on this program is educational, each student gets a professional reel with their work and earns official IMBD credit. This high-profile event is known to attract special guests, including the Mayor of San Juan Capistrano, Academy Award-nominated writers, recognized actors and other notable talents in the local and global arts community. “We just finished our first on-camera class at AA4K and absolutely loved it,” says Joi F. of Capistrano Beach in a Yelp review. “The class has an amazing teacher-to-student ratio and the kids get so much individual attention. We capped it off with a screening of the film at the Regency Theater in San Juan Capistrano. There were

Private Lessons: Vocal & Piano

As Pat R. of Ladera Ranch says on Yelp, “Mr. Zygo and the whole staff are always so fantastic—full of energy and genuine care for the kids. My daughter also took private lessons with Miss Katherine, and she was recently accepted into Orange County School of the Arts!”

A Steadfast Commitment: In Sickness and in Health

As many in the community are well aware, the success of Acting Academy for Kids has been an achievement to celebrate, but also filled with challenging moments where the lesson continues to be “always keep the faith.” While nine months pregnant with their second child, Maggie underwent a surgical biopsy on her neck. On the day she gave birth, she was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma — an untreatable and incurable cancer. After considerable introspection and prayer, the Zygos made a decision to not only keep Acting Academy for Kids alive, but to make sure it thrived.

They decided to set an example for every child to never give up on your dreams, to always follow your passion and light up the world with your gifts— no matter what. And every day, they are rewarded by the joy and pride they feel when they see students grow and thrive under their leadership. “Acting Academy for Kids plays a major role in my life,” says Ryder Flowers, age 11. “I have met wonderful life friends and have developed great acting skills from the extraordinary team. It’s a huge comfort zone for me and lets me have fun. I am very thankful for AA4K!” Parents agree, frequently attesting that an investment in Acting Academy for Kids is really an investment in developing confidence and essential life skills. “Whether it's a multi-month program or a week-long summer camp, Acting Academy for Kids’ professional and dedicated staff does an amazing job preparing the kids for their roles and for the big show,” says R.L. from Ladera Ranch in a Yelp review. “Staff members are organized, caring and patient, and genuinely committed to developing the children's confidence, self-esteem and team working skills.” To learn more about Acting Academy for Kids or register for Frozen, summer camps or private lessons, log on to www.actingacademyforkids. com or send an email to actingacademy4kids@gmail.com. SC KIDS

s Ti pFOR BUILDING CONFIDENT, EAGER READERS

Reading is the foundation for all learning and essential for school success. As children progress through school, it's important to continue to build their reading abilities. ''Reading confidence comes with continued practice,'' says Emma Villamizar of the Laguna Niguel Huntington Learning Center. How can parents help build their children into confident, eager readers?

1. WORK ON VOCABULARY.

Nothing will frustrate a child while reading more than encountering lots of unfamiliar words. Request vocabulary lists from your child’s teacher and work with your child every night on reviewing those words. When reading, encourage your child to keep a dictionary nearby to look up unknown words.

2. FOCUS ON THE BUILDING BLOCKS.

At a very early age, children learn phonemic awareness— that words are composed of different sounds, which form words and other sounds—and phonics—letter sounds, the relationship between letters and sounds, and decoding words. But as they move into more challenging texts, fluency and comprehension become the focus. You can help by continuing to read aloud with your children and encouraging your child to do the following while reading: think through the plot and structure of a story, pause to confirm understanding (and ask questions/ search for answers) and discuss ideas. 24 | S Magazines

3. MAKE DAILY TIME FOR READING.

Practice makes improvement when it comes to reading. Remember to make it an enjoyable activity as well rather than a “have to” that your child feels forced to do.

4. ENCOURAGE GOAL SETTING.

Goal setting is valuable because it gives children something to work toward and can serve as a motivator. Think about fun ways you can encourage the reading habit by setting goals. Maybe you plan an ice cream outing to talk about every new book your child finishes. Maybe you read a book together and set page goals for each week, then talk about what you’ve read at the dinner table.

Why Is My Child Struggling With Writing Too?

If your child struggles with reading, chances are that writing skills are affected as well. For effective writing your child needs rich vocabulary, correct spelling and grammar, proper sentence

structure and punctuation among other skills. These come easier if your child has a strong reading foundation.

How Huntington Helps:

Reading is important for school and life. If you know your child is struggling with reading and you’re not sure how to help, call Huntington. We will uncover the root of the problem and develop a customized learning program that will help your child strengthen those reading skills, regain his or her confidence and learn to enjoy reading. Remember, the Summer Slide is real. Use the time to build skills in Reading Comprehension, Writing, Math and Study Skills instead of falling further behind. THE LOBSTER SHACK • SAN CLEMENTE Words by Dina Scaglione Published by The Local DISH Magazine June 2019

Once upon a time, a ten-year-old boy from Venice Beach set out on a bonding trip with his father to the East Coast. This innocuous road trip became the stuff dreams are made of, a jaunt that introduced a young boy to lobster rolls, and planted a seed that grew into what is now The Lobster Shack. Most of us can recall those palpable moments that define our life’s calling. Moments frozen in time where we remember every smell, every taste. That’s the impetus for The Lobster Shack, the newest eatery in Old Town San Clemente that adds west coast flair to quintessential east coast fare. New England transplants will be pleas-

antly surprised by brioche so light and lobster so sweet, they’ll swear they’re back in Cape Cod. The Lobster Shack’s brioche rolls are baked fresh daily with flour imported from back east to give it a light, airy texture. Fresh fish is flown in daily, mostly from the East Coast; nothing is ever frozen or reheated. Seafood is generously layered, without heavy, fussy dressing to over-complicate the experience. Your choice of chunky lobster, succulent crab or flavorful shrimp is piled high and held together with a light lemon butter aioli sauce. Share the ‘Trio for Two” where you can experience all three savory staples in a marriage of perfection—served with your choice of two sides: Blue Cheese Cole Slaw, New

England Baked Beans, or Cape Cod Kettle Chips. Start your meal off with a cup of house-made Clam Chowder or Lobster Bisque, piping hot and richly flavored. “Think globally and support locally” is owner Dan Naughton’s mission for The Lobster Shack. As a big believer in supporting the local community and preserving our oceans, anything left over at the end of the day is donated to a local food bank that feeds those in need. In his commitment to sustainable cooking methods, Dan abides by the United Nation’s sustainable development plan to reduce his global footprint and only sources from fisheries that adhere to the FAO’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Fishing. Open daily from 11 AM to 8 PM and on

Sundays from 11 AM to 6 PM, the Lobster Shack delivers an experience you don't often find in South OC and gladly one you won’t soon forget. 111 W Avenida Palizda, San Clemente www.thelobstershack.us

LAURA MILLER

Lakefront Home or Cabin in Big Bear? 909-225-5970 lmskills1@mac.com

For all the wrong reasons, after a stressful day’s work at Ohio Bell, I attended night classes at the downtown campus of Cleveland State University. I had to hurry from my last class at 10 pm to a bus stop in a nefarious part of town; my last chance to return to my home in the safety of the suburbs. I have many stories about this bus stop and rides on that bus. Here is one of them.

Waiting for the Late Bus As a Storm Threatens (A poetically embellished true story)

He passes so close my breath involuntarily halts so that I do not inhale the disease of his scent. Raging headwaters of decay pour from unplumbed chasms deep in his reeking core. Muttering and weaving, he moves on, but just when I think I am safe, he stops, as though he recognizes me then turns back. Defiantly, he strides toward me. An open and filthy raincoat flaps around his knees in a whirlwind of haste and the quickening storm. A brick wall at my back, the dark churning Universe that is him closing in before me. I am trapped and afraid. His mouth, a gaping hole framed by cracked lips and strings of phlegm, twists into a snarl. “Jezebel,” he screams, pointing a long sharp-nailed finger. “Harlot who lays with kings and beggars.” We are now eye to eye. He is rocking, I am frozen. We stand toe to toe in the now silent gale-haunted night. Moments that seem hours pass.

I force myself to meet his yellowed rheumy eyes and see fires of madness where fires of love should burn. I see a lifetime of tears evaporating in the flames. I recoil from the filth, derangement, threats of violence. I wonder, what does he see when he looks at me? I am no longer afraid. Was his mouth ever the taste that someone longed for? Have those lips ever shared the sweet communion of a tender kiss that sealed a pledge? Has that snarl ever been a heart melting smile? Who broke this heart and mind? What forgotten promise led him to this moment? What howling tempest blew out his light? What Spirit sent me here? The wind picks up, street trash swirls around us. Lightening flashes and in the thunder, I hear a voice, “This is my beloved son. See him. Hear him. Love him.” He steps beside me very still, looking down. It begins to rain. My bus pulls up, the doors wheeze open. Wet, cold and trembling, I step on and find a seat. Beyond my reflection in the window I see him pacing, ranting, alone in the worsening storm.

SUMMER CAMP

Join our eSports Camps this summer at Golden West College. eSports Elites Academy offers camps in Fortnite, Overwatch, and League of Legends. Each eSports Camp week incorporates training in safe practices and schedule optimization, skill development, gameplay, and competitions, which provides a solution for kids and teens who are playing eSports and can benefit from learning how to do so responsibly. Each camp offers a true gamer experience with gamer-level computers and headsets. Campers learn how to improve their skills individually and work in teams, boosting their overall game sense and abilities as players. Team

work is a very important component of each camp, and campers learn how to become effective teammates and leaders. Teamwork can sometimes determine a win or a loss in eSports.

Week In Play

The goal for the week is to establish team building and communication. While assisting and improving players in game abilities, we want to introduce each individual player to a lesser seen side of the gaming community. Each player will get to learn what it’s like behind the scenes, what it

SC KIDS

putting kids first ISSAC CHARTER SCHOOL

Do you want your child to study in a respectful and enriched environment in which he or she can learn to speak, understand, read, write, and communicate in Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and English? Do you want your children to experi-

ence a STEM program that includes hands-on science, computer programming and individualized math instruction?

Is it important for your child to

learn soft skills such as building friendships through dialogue, giving and receiving respectful feedback, navigating disappointments and breakdowns, and carefully managing commitments and promises? The International School for Science and Culture (ISSAC), a public charter school approved in March 2019 by the Orange County Board of Education and to be located at the border of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, offers such a personalized and project-based program aimed at cultivating global citizens empowered to build a peaceful society. Class sizes will be about 25. ISSAC will open August 22, 2019, with grades TK through 5th, and will expand to 8th grade. Charter schools are public schools, supported by the public funds allocated to each student who attends the school each day. There is no tuition cost to parents. Like all public schools, ISSAC

will provide a Free and Appropriate Public Education, a GATE program to provide enrichment, support for English Learners to become English proficient, and Special Education in accordance with IEPs and all associated processes. ISSAC can accept students from Newport-Mesa district as well as from surrounding areas. Charter schools are schools of choice, offering families an educational alternative within the public school system. No student is forced to attend or to continue to attend a charter school if they prefer at any time to attend their home school in their District. The founding team of ISSAC believes all children are capable of superior academic performance, joyful engagement with world languages and cultures, and social-emotional excellence. The program offered at ISSAC is geared to produce these results with an approach that is fine-tuned to accommodate the individual student, rather than with an expectation that all students in a given grade will advance together in lockstep fashion. For the student who can advance rapidly, ISSAC provides the ability to explore and learn with full support. For the student who requires greater support to meet grade level expectations, ISSAC provides exactly that support. Differentiated learning occurs in ISSAC through flexible grouping in a rotational model classroom. Project-based learning is implemented with heterogeneous stu-

ISSAC's academic program is called STREAM, adding Reading/Writing and Arts to the traditional Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Arts at ISSAC include integrated Performing Arts in academic subjects including in the foreign language classes, and a freestanding voice and instruments music class once a week. ISSAC students will also challenge themselves in Visual Arts to represent reality, experience modes of art from various cultures, and express themselves artistically with a variety of methods/materials etc., once again integrated with academic subjects, and as a freestanding weekly class.

ISSAC is geared to accommodate the individual student, rather than expecting all students to advance together.

All students at ISSAC will have the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. ISSAC offers a foreign language exposure program focused on oral communication and dialogue, and understanding the cultures associated with these languages. ISSAC will use the arts and technology in innovative ways to support this cultural understanding; reading and writing in the target languages will naturally follow. Social-Emotional Learning will lead to ISSAC students developing a superior ability to coordinate action, set and achieve personal goals, and contribute to the society in which they live. Physical Education will focus on building strength and agility through challenging and enjoyable activities.

students will participate in standardized testing in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and PE in accordance with these standards, and ISSAC will publish results in the annual School Accountability Report Card (SARC), as District schools do. There will be periodic additional testing within the school year to support and focus teaching and learning efforts. All teachers of core subjects will be appropriately credentialed. Parent communication will be managed through ParentSquare, along with ISSAC’s Student Information System, School Pathways. Parent participation is welcome at ISSAC, though it is not required. Parent groups such as School Advisory Council and the English Language Advisory Council and the PTA, as well as the LCAP process will provide formal opportunities for parent input, and additionally, there will be opportunities to directly support campus life and provide input to the Principal. The campus is nestled in a quiet neighborhood on 18th Street at the border of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, adjacent to a spacious park with soccer goals and a playground. The school will have exclusive use of the green space each school day till noon. The school day will be 7.5 hours long, running from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. approximately, with a 4.5 hour minimum day on Wednesday to allow time for teacher professional development. Access to the campus and all student activities will be managed with the utmost attention to safety and security. All employees and volunteers working with students will be fingerprinted for security clearance. Paul started playing music at the age of 16 with a bass given to him by his father. Later on that year (2003) he joined the Rancho Canyon Music front desk staff and eventually became the front desk manager. After four years of working in the shop Paul started teaching outside the store, then at the school during Guitar Summer Camp. He quickly started getting requests to teach at RCM, and he’s been teaching here ever since! Paul has played in original bands and has played venues including the Coach House, Chain Reaction, and the Whiskey A Go-Go, among many others! Paul has recently taken a break from playing in bands to focus on his students but still attends various “Jam Nights” around town and can be found on Sundays playing at Hope Crossing Church in San Juan Capistrano!
