The magazine will create striking designs, bring award-winning writers and thought-provoking articles and will reflect the artistic and intrinsic beauty of Huntington Beach. The magazine will capture the coast’s unique vibe; a funky mix of education and upscale lifestyles, playful beach culture, and entrepreneurial energy. Compelling features and profiles will showcase notable students and faculty, famous artists, and offbeat characters; the charming bungalows, and secret gardens; the world-class restaurants, eclectic shops, and nearby getaways. The spectrum of columns and departments will introduce its readers to the adventurous people who have fought to preserve Golden West College’s rich history and pristine natural surroundings, as well as those who personify its diversity and creative flair. The magazine will have energy — an energy that is propelled by the people who learn, live, work and play here...Surf City, USA. We want to take this opportunity to introduce you to some of the exciting things and how we will be helping GWC build community partners and create media exposure in our community and surrounding areas. We're focusing on highlighting our partners with outdoor out of home digital advertising, 50,000 print magazines and an approximate 40,000 Email database. From healthcare expos to our new Friday Night Outdoor Fair and Farmers Market atmosphere, we are creating a media flywheel on campus. One hundred thousand cars circle our campus weekly, which equates to over five-million vehicles per year if we average 1.4 persons per car, our impressions go upward of 7,000,000. Everyone involved genuinely understands the progress at GWC; we are bringing branding and a network of community representatives into our sphere. If you would like to join our media team, please Email Bradley at bwright.x@gwc.cccd.edu or feel free to call at (714) 617-2435. We're looking to discover students, moms, seniors, and bilingual Vietnamese and Spanish writers, sales, web designers, and media darlings. Ahh...furthermore we have quite the theatre productions going down on campus.

If you were not at the exciting Hyatt Newport Beach Jazz Festival this year (May 31-June 2), you did miss out! But not to worry, you have the opportunity to make up for it. The smooth-jazz experience continues with the kick-off of the Hyatt’s 2019 Summer Concert Series, its 26th Anniversary. Held weekly in the hotel’s intimate Back Bay Amphitheater, the Summer Concert Series promises to pick up where the jazz festival ended; providing world-class entertainment in Orange County from July-October. Morris Day & the Time (Saturday) and George Benson (Sunday) were this year’s headliners. Both closed their shows with high-energy, dynamic performances that had the crowd on their feet to the very end. Jeffrey Osborne, Najee, Poncho Sanchez and West Coast Jam (Richard Elliot, Peter White and DW3) are just a few of the other top-notch performers that rounded out the weekend party. New from the Hyatt this year were many options to ensure all guests remained fully entertained, from new food venues like the Indulge Pool during the day, to the relocation of the infamous “After Party” in the Terrace Room, adjacent to the Oasis Pool. Bank of the West, the jazz festival’s presenting sponsor for the past 10 years, continues their commitment to supporting entertainment opportunities in the communities they serve by also sponsoring the upcoming “Summer Concert Series” starting July 12th with smooth jazz favorites Kirk Whalum and Jonathan Butler. GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE

ice President Janet Houlihan’s career trajectory was not that of a typical accounting major at Golden West College. While the major that would be best suited for the student-to-vice president career path remains up for debate, Houlihan assures the students she works with that no matter what your degree, it can open doors for you, some unexpected. Her history with the Coast Community College District spans nearly 34 years, beginning as a student and as a part-time student assistant with the Admissions and Records office at Golden West College. From there, Houlihan worked at the District Office in Purchasing and Budget while she completed her bachelor’s at California State University, Fullerton. After graduating, Houlihan spent 8 years beginning as a Staff Aide and working her way up to Director of Fiscal Services for Coastline Community College, before returning to Golden West as the Director of Fiscal Services. While balancing working full-time and raising a family of five children, Janet successfully completed a graduate program at the University of Phoenix, earning her Master’s in Business Administration. Now, as Vice President of Golden West College, Janet Houlihan uses her background in education — both as a student and as a working professional — to redefine the college in more ways than one. Currently, conversations around student housing developments are underway, along with the development of the Vision 2030 Plan which encompasses educational and facilities Master Plans through 2030. These Master Plans are inclusive of projected needs and supporting services for the college, a list of planning priorities for the campus community, as well as potential opportunities, methodologies of implementation, and strategies for achieving the future goals of the institution.

JANET HOULIHAN GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE VICE PRESIDENT

Giving all individuals the opportunity to go on to achieve what they set out for...even if they, too, have their sights set on becoming Vice President one day.

Houlihan recognizes that she is in a position of privilege that her predecessors before her were not, which is a result of the recent district bonds which make funds available to support Golden West’s visions and goals of development. She plans to use the available monetary resources to implement the plans to support the community and students that Golden West College serves. Besides managing the campus budget, facilities, and many other departments, Houlihan spends time working with students and considering what solutions can be implemented to give more individuals the chance at a positive higher education experience. The Behavioral Assessment Team (created by Houlihan and an academic counselor) is part of this initiative, and involves utilizing a software system on campus allowing individuals to report concerning behavior, which the team then uses to determine the necessary steps of action and support. Embodying the college’s core values of inclusiveness and diversity, the considerations of the Behavioral Assessment Team stretch beyond diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and delve into issues such as mental health and understanding the reasons behind potentially disruptive or concerning behavior. In looking at learning barriers (such as behavioral issues) as catalysts for a more nuanced and personalized approach, Janet hopes to give all of Golden West’s students the chance and the necessary tools to be successful in reaching their educational goals. As a former student, Houlihan knows firsthand that success is not solely an individual effort but, rather, the combined efforts of the individual, the institution and the community. As Vice President, she intends for the institution of Golden West College to remain and continue to grow as a reliable pillar of strength and inclusion: supporting its students successes and giving all individuals the opportunity to go on to achieve what they set out for...even if they, too, have their sights set on becoming Vice President one day.

GWC FOUNDATION

berman BRUCE

BY EDUCATING MORE AND MORE PEOPLE FROM THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE, THOSE COMMUNITIES BECOME SAFER, MORE PRODUCTIVE, MORE AFFLUENT, MORE EDUCATED, [AND] MORE SUCCESSFUL.

BRUCE BERMAN 8 | S Magazine

ruce Berman sits as the Director of the Foundation at Golden West College. In a little over five years, Bruce has worked alongside fellow staff and the board of directors to build out the foundation’s fundraising, with sights on raising enough money, along with the funds provided by the State of California’s College Promise support and that of existing GWC Foundation scholarships, to be able to provide free tuition to roughly 3,000 full time students each year for the next 10 to 12 years. The impact the foundation aims to have on the thousands of students that attend Golden West College is significant, but Berman’s track record raises few doubts that the goals of the foundation will be met and, quite possibly, surpassed.

It was 1971 when Bruce first began his career in higher education. Seventeen years into teaching as a professor in microbiology, biochemistry and math at Seneca College, a friend of Bruce’s (who was working for the Canadian government, at the time) urged him to apply for Canadian Federal Government grant money that was available. Shortly thereafter, he began doing so— applying for and successfully securing a number of grants for the college, and using the money to develop programs that would add value to the education of students studying at the local community college in the north-end of Toronto, Canada. While working as a professor, Bruce understood firsthand the foundation that education in and of itself provided for students, but hoped

www.southcoastmagazine.com

to use grant money to continue to develop programs that would allow students to apply concepts learned in the classroom, further preparing them for their careers post-college. The first $1 million dollar grant was used to fund this applied learning and research initiative— co-op’ing every program at Seneca College or, in other words, giving students the opportunity to take another semester in which they could gain work experience in their field, and be paid while doing so. Once implemented, Bruce went on to successfully secure a second grant that supported the creation of academic programs that were engineered to provide women with the tools and skill-sets needed to achieve their career goals, informed by the results of a survey that was distributed to 10,000 women in Toronto during 1986.

Pictured: Bruce Berman and this year's raffle ticket winner for the 2018 Jeep Renegade (donated by Mr. Pete Shaver, Huntington Beach Jeep), Mrs. Jo Ann Anthony, her son Jeffery Anthony, Patty Holohan (Director Community Engagements, Huntington Beach Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram) and Kelsey Ray Evans (Director of Marketing, Huntington Beach Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram). Bruce Berman and his wife Donna at this year's Gala.

PROCEEDS FROM THE GALA SUPPORT GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE STUDENTS, THE FACULTY WISH LIST PROGRAM, AND THE STAR TEXTBOOK LOAN PROGRAM. The actions Bruce took to improve the student experience with the grant dollars he secured opened up a number of doors, not only for himself, but for the colleges which he would serve.

After becoming Head of Fundraising at Seneca College, Berman went on

to create a new paradigm for the College’s Alumni Association in Canada that would eventually spread to the

U.S. as a result of its success. Berman’s retirement in 2002 was shortlived as, after his nearly thirty-year stint at Seneca, he moved to Maryland to help consolidate, rebrand and grow the community college in Baltimore County as the Vice Chancellor of Advancement. Finally, he came to work at Golden West College where he continues to apply his fundraising experiences today. Bruce and the foundation’s vision to provide students with the opportunities and tools necessary to be successful, regardless of financial circumstance, is more essential than ever before. At a time when the cumulative student loan debt total soars at over $1.5 trillion in the United States alone, the Foundation at GWC’s aim to fund student tuition minimizes significant financial barriers, provid-

ing a larger pool of individuals with affordable higher education and the possibility to earn a degree unencumbered by thousands of dollars in student loan debt. When asked about his vision for the next five years at Golden West College, it is clear that Berman continues to speak from a place that considers the comprehensive picture of post-secondary education, with impacts reaching far beyond the classroom and the college campus. Bruce explains, “By educating more and more people from the communities we serve, those communities become safer, more productive, more affluent, more educated, [and] more successful.” He envisions the possibility of extending free tuition to every student interested in attending the college on a full-time

S Magazines / 949.498.0705

basis, and continuing to maximize the positive effects that Golden West College has on the community. As an institution, Golden West’s encompassing values include access, equity and inclusiveness, and Bruce aims to use fundraising to uphold and apply these values to benefit as many individuals from the community as possible. Since his first co-op program in the 1980’s, Bruce has remained steadfast that education is a stepping stone: one that should adequately support and lead all of its students forward to where they want to go. He plans to continue heading the foundation with the vision of forward-movement in mind— raising money to support the college, the faculty, the students and, in turn, the communities that they return to. CRIMINAL JUSTICE

DEAN’S MESSAGE The Regional Criminal Justice Training Center at Golden West College is an invaluable asset to the communities of Southern California and the State more broadly. The first college-based police academy program in the state to be certified by the California commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), the Center currently serves between 2,000 and 2,500 students per academic year, from all over the state. The Academy’s roots date back to 1955, when the FBI taught Orange County’s first academy class in the City of Orange. In 1960, the operation was turned over to the Coast Community College District, and in 1969, was relocated to the new campus of Golden West College. The Regional Criminal Justice Training Center is constantly reviewing programs and methods to better serve the California law enforcement community. The recently completed RCJTC complex enables us to include several new programs to our curriculum, as well as provide a training environment that allows instructional staff to administer state-of-the-art scenario training.

THOUSANDS OF POLICE RECRUITS HAVE GRADUATED FROM THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE CENTER AT GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE, HUNDREDS HAVE BEEN PROMOTED TO EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT POSITIONS, AND OVER 37 HAVE REACHED TOP MANAGEMENT POSITIONS SUCH AS POLICE CHIEF AND SHERIFF. 16 | S Magazine

The Center is dedicated to providing the finest law enforcement training available, anywhere, and we invite anyone and everyone to be part of our legacy and our vision. Ronald E. Lowenberg, Dean/Director Regional Criminal Justice Training Center www.southcoastmagazine.com

OUR LEGACY IS OUR VISION INNOVATION. SERVICE. CHARACTER. SUCCESS.

The Criminal Justice Training Center, a Regional Law Enforcement Training Facility, is deeply committed to the college’s mission to deliver high quality learning and learning related services to students and the community we serve. Our top priority is to provide educational, vocational and technical training that will lead to transfer to a university, specialized employment, or career advancement. All three (3) programs offered at the Criminal Justice Training Center are flexible to meet the constantly changing training needs of the law enforcement profession. These needs are established collectively and independently by Municipal, County and State law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, state certification standards for police officers, established and mandated by the State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), are constantly in transition to meet the ever-changing demands placed on law enforcement in the State of California. Set in a non-traditional matrix, the CJTC is divided into three major and complex programs, each having different and specific delivery requirements. Even though seemingly independent of each other, each program nevertheless has areas that are interwoven and inter-dependent with no one area more or less important than the other.

The Golden West College Criminal Justice Training Center is deeply committed to the College’s mission, “Student Success.” With an emphasis on student-centered instruction and problem-based learning, it is the Center’s top priority to provide educational, vocational and technical training that will lead to a transfer to a university, specialized employment or career enhancement in the criminal justice profession. The Center is committed to training peace officers and support personnel in the underlying philosophy of Community Oriented Policing, emphasizing principles of leadership, ethics, professional values, partnership development, problem-solving skills, tactical proficiency and communication. The Center is dedicated to the success of all students so that they may demonstrate the critical skills necessary to prepare them to work cooperatively in the multifaceted communities they serve. For more information about the CJTC contact Cindy Onusz at (714) 895-8368 conusz@gwc.cccd.edu

Setting the Stage for Success

OC PARENTS (AND KIDS!) AGREE: ACTING ACADEMY FOR KIDS BUILDS CONFIDENCE, DEVELOPS LIFE SKILLS AND FOSTERS LASTING FRIENDSHIPS

Acting Academy for Kids is great for fostering friendships, learning how to be on a team and be flexible about taking on different roles. The team is energetic and vibrant, and my kids learned how to speak in front of large audiences. – Anik Rubalcava, Laguna Hills BY JENNIFER BENSON

If you’ve ever listened to an Academy Awards speech, there are many influential people the winners on stage thank each year. Parents for opening opportunities. Teachers who were the first to see potential. Enthusiastic audiences and fans who sent encouragement along the way. By the same token, if you’ve ever browsed through LinkedIn profiles, you’ll see plenty of thanks as well. Strong foundations for professional success—like teamwork, public speaking, discipline, commitment and creative thinking—don’t happen by accident. The “thanks” to those who helped build such a strong foundation for career success may be more behind-the-scenes than on big awards shows, but it shines through every achievement nonetheless. Whether a child’s dream is to be on stage or behind the camera, a doctor or an engineer, many Orange County parents and students point to Acting Academy for Kids as a place to foster life’s essential skills. Confidence, public speaking, networking, discipline and teamwork, to name a few. 20 | S Magazine

A Foundation to Last a Lifetime

Founded in 2007 by husband and wife team Stephen and Maggie Zygo, Acting Academy for Kids has grown from a youth musical theater startup to a leader in the Orange County performing arts community. To date, AA4K has brought the performing arts aspirations of more than 10,000 local youth to life on stage, on film, and behind the lights and cameras. This success is no accident. Both Stephen and Maggie hold Master’s Degrees in teaching, and Stephen has a degree in Musical Theater Performance as well. During a decade of rapid growth, Acting Academy for Kids has expanded to meet growing demand, but has never lost its personal touch that makes every show, every relationship, feel like family. “The organization and communication are unmatchable, which is a huge blessing,” says Shannon S. of Riverside in one Yelp review. “They are very personable, great at what they do, and go the extra mile.”

Multiple Locations, One Orange County Institution

Acting Academy for Kids operates out of three convenient Orange County lo-

cations: the historic Cabrillo Playhouse in San Clemente, the Community Roots Academy in Laguna Niguel and the state-of-the-art, 20,000-squarefoot OC Music & Dance Theater, which shares a building with the Pacific Symphony in Irvine. As part of its mission to inspire a deeper appreciation of the arts among local youth, AA4K offers many opportunities to experience nearly every aspect of the theater experience, from summer camps and Jr. directing to vocals and acting. “Love this place--the teachers are amazing and nurturing,” says Kelly Uygan of Ladera Ranch. “They offer a fantastic variety of programs. Realistic stage setting, plus production, costumes and props are professional and creative. My six-year-old started with summer camps three years ago and now, after more than four musicals, three recitals and piano lessons, would go there every day if I let her!”

Summer Camps

Whether a child is a seasoned veteran or exploring new interests, Acting Academy for Kids’ summer performing arts camps are a great way to learn new skills, expand talents and meet new friends.

www.southcoastmagazine.com

“My daughter loves coming here every summer for an acting camp!" says Sasha Ackley from San Juan Capistrano. “Mr. Zygo makes it the best. She has done it now five years in a row and we are more than happy every time!” Open to children 4-14 years old, each week-long program offers a mix of acting, singing and dance, culminating in a Friday afternoon performance open to parents and other cheering fans. This year’s line-up, which was just announced in February, includes such popular hits as The Greatest Showman, Mary Poppins Returns, Aladdin’s Magic Lamp, Annie and Harry Potter. “I’m always impressed with how much fun the kids have during a week with Acting Academy for Kids,” says Galen Corbett of San Juan Capistrano. “So many smiles, new friends and new acting skills!”

Musical Theater

The centerpiece of Acting Academy for Kids is its musical theater program. Every Fall, Winter and Spring, multiple casts—each with no more than 30 actors—embark on a three-month, intensive journey to bring a well-known musical to life.

Acting Academy for Kids has been a wonderful place for my son to learn and grow. Since participating in his first week-long summer camp almost four years ago and then on to many full productions, my son has grown to be a strong, confident adolescent. AA4K has helped him to feel comfortable speaking in front of others and to explore different areas of his creativity. – Lindy Flowers, Mission Viejo

From lighting and singing to choreography and costume design, students not only get to shine on stage, but they learn everything that goes on behind the scenes to make the show a success as well. Auditions are held on the first day of class and everyone gets a role in each full-scale production. This spring, young performers are invited to “come and build a snowman” with the Orange County premiere of Disney’s FROZEN. Registrations are now open, with auditions beginning in early April and performances scheduled for June. “We have two daughters who have participated in multiple AA4K musical theatre offerings, and their experiences have been nothing short of amazing,” says Ryan Vogt-Lowell of Aliso Viejo. “Their professional and dedicated staff is organized, caring and patient throughout the entire process, and is genuinely committed to developing the children’s confidence, self-esteem and team working skills.” Twelve-year-old Macey Bernabe of Trabuco Canyon agrees, saying “Acting Academy for Kids taught me

really good acting techniques. The directors are the nicest ever and they are always there to help you whenever. They always have smiles on their faces, too!”

interviews on the red carpet, attendance by the mayor, a cast party and more. Very fun for the kids and the parents.”

AA4K Studios: For Kids & Teens

For students eager to take their skills to the next level, one-on-one guidance and professional training is available. Acting Academy for Kids offers private lessons and coaching for voice and piano to help students learn new skills and hone their existing talents.

Everyone loves the stage, but in today’s digital age, there’s a little something called “film” as well. AA4K Studios is a film conservatory where kids, tweens and teens ages 7-18 gain first-hand experience both in front of and behind the camera. Each student writes, shoots, directs, acts and assistant-edits their own short film. Their big screen debuts are showcased at an exclusive, end-of-season premiere gala, where friends, families and fellow film lovers can watch their creative talents come to life on the big screen. While the focus on this program is educational, each student gets a professional reel with their work and earns official IMBD credit. This high-profile event is known to attract special guests, including the Mayor of San Juan Capistrano, Academy Award-nominated writers, recognized actors and other notable talents in the local and global arts community. “We just finished our first on-camera class at AA4K and absolutely loved it,” says Joi F. of Capistrano Beach in a Yelp review. “The class has an amazing teacher-to-student ratio and the kids get so much individual attention. We capped it off with a screening of the film at the Regency Theater in San Juan Capistrano. There were

Private Lessons: Vocal & Piano

As Pat R. of Ladera Ranch says on Yelp, “Mr. Zygo and the whole staff are always so fantastic—full of energy and genuine care for the kids. My daughter also took private lessons with Miss Katherine, and she was recently accepted into Orange County School of the Arts!”

A Steadfast Commitment: In Sickness and in Health

As many in the community are well aware, the success of Acting Academy for Kids has been an achievement to celebrate, but also filled with challenging moments where the lesson continues to be “always keep the faith.” While nine months pregnant with their second child, Maggie underwent a surgical biopsy on her neck. On the day she gave birth, she was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma — an untreatable and incurable cancer. After considerable introspection and prayer, the Zygos made a decision to not only keep Acting Academy for Kids alive, but to make sure it thrived.

S Magazines / 949.498.0705

They decided to set an example for every child to never give up on your dreams, to always follow your passion and light up the world with your gifts— no matter what. And every day, they are rewarded by the joy and pride they feel when they see students grow and thrive under their leadership. “Acting Academy for Kids plays a major role in my life,” says Ryder Flowers, age 11. “I have met wonderful life friends and have developed great acting skills from the extraordinary team. It’s a huge comfort zone for me and lets me have fun. I am very thankful for AA4K!” Parents agree, frequently attesting that an investment in Acting Academy for Kids is really an investment in developing confidence and essential life skills. “Whether it's a multi-month program or a week-long summer camp, Acting Academy for Kids’ professional and dedicated staff does an amazing job preparing the kids for their roles and for the big show,” says R.L. from Ladera Ranch in a Yelp review. “Staff members are organized, caring and patient, and genuinely committed to developing the children's confidence, self-esteem and team working skills.” To learn more about Acting Academy for Kids or register for Frozen, summer camps or private lessons, log on to www.actingacademyforkids. com or send an email to actingacademy4kids@gmail.com. Do you want your child to study in a respectful and enriched environment in which he or she can learn to speak, understand, read, write, and communicate in Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and English? Do you want your children to experi-

Is it important for your child to

learn soft skills such as building friendships through dialogue, giving and receiving respectful feedback, navigating disappointments and breakdowns, and carefully managing commitments and promises? The International School for Science and Culture (ISSAC), a public charter school approved in March 2019 by the Orange County Board of Education and to be located at the border of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, offers such a personalized and project-based program aimed at cultivating global citizens empowered to build a peaceful society. Class sizes will be about 25. ISSAC will open August 22, 2019, with grades TK through 5th, and will expand to 8th grade. Charter schools are public schools, supported by the public funds allocated to each student who attends the school each day. There is no tuition cost to parents. Like all public schools, ISSAC

will provide a Free and Appropriate Public Education, a GATE program to provide enrichment, support for English Learners to become English proficient, and Special Education in accordance with IEPs and all associated processes. ISSAC can accept students from Newport-Mesa district as well as from surrounding areas. Charter schools are schools of choice, offering families an educational alternative within the public school system. No student is forced to attend or to continue to attend a charter school if they prefer at any time to attend their home school in their District. The founding team of ISSAC believes all children are capable of superior academic performance, joyful engagement with world languages and cultures, and social-emotional excellence. The program offered at ISSAC is geared to produce these results with an approach that is fine-tuned to accommodate the individual student, rather than with an expectation that all students in a given grade will advance together in lockstep fashion. For the student who can advance rapidly, ISSAC provides the ability to explore and learn with full support. For the student who requires greater support to meet grade level expectations, ISSAC provides exactly that support. Differentiated learning occurs in ISSAC through flexible grouping in a rotational model classroom. Project-based learning is implemented with heterogeneous stu-

The Arts at ISSAC include integrated Performing Arts in academic subjects including in the foreign language classes, and a freestanding voice and instruments music class once a week. ISSAC students will also challenge themselves in Visual Arts to represent reality, experience modes of art from various cultures, and express themselves artistically with a variety of methods/materials etc., once again integrated with academic subjects, and as a freestanding weekly class.

ISSAC is geared to accommodate the individual student, rather than expecting all students to advance together.

All students at ISSAC will have the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. ISSAC offers a foreign language exposure program focused on oral communication and dialogue, and understanding the cultures associated with these languages. ISSAC will use the arts and technology in innovative ways to support this cultural understanding; reading and writing in the target languages will naturally follow. WE ARE GRATEFUL It has been well over a year since Justin Rider and his team of dedicated professionals opened the doors to One-Eleven Coastal. Their aspiration to deliver on a "ranch" aesthetic while celebrating the coastal lifestyle came to life. It was not that long ago that the hills behind our little beach town were home to one of the greatest ranch operations in our country. Rider admits, "It had to take a village" to get this restaurant running to the level of quality and service the people of South County expect and deserve. "We've had tremendous help from the best in the business and are forever grateful for the time, effort, and quality of work that has gone into the creation of this special place." Owner, Justin Rider is surrounded by an all-star cast of family, friends, and staff who have made this experience not only possible, but one of the best of his life. Marcus Osterhout, who happens to be a life-long friend of Rider's, is

a valuable partner and co-general manager at One-Eleven Coastal. His high-level restaurant experience and outgoing spirit and determination have made him a large part of the success and forward progress One-Eleven has experienced. "Of the several people we could not have done this without, he is at the top of the list. So, if you see Marcus at the restaurant or even around town, be sure to say hello!" Not only is Tammy Hallen a pillar in Justin's life, but the Matriarch of One-Eleven Coastal. She has been God-mother to both Justin and Marcus since they were teenagers and has supported them greatly in this endeavor. "She literally 'bet the ranch' that her boys could make something special on Del Mar. Tammy's support has been paramount to the success of One-Eleven Coastal." If you have visited One-Eleven Coastal you may have noticed a bright smiling young lady that has a little more leeway to harass the boss.

Savannah Rider (Justin's daughter) has been the first face you see when you walk in on the weekend evenings since day one. Besides being the hostess, she takes great pride in the work being done at One-Eleven Coastal. "We have had the unique experience of working together. There are very few fathers who are fortunate enough to have that experience, and while it has its challenges sometimes, working with Savannah has brought an immense amount of joy and pride to my life. I can promise, there is no way I could be more proud." It was easy to see why Rider is so proud when we asked Savannah about her favorite part of working at One-Eleven Coastal, "Meeting the people and constantly learning about the community that I live and go to school in. I also take a lot of pride in telling our story. I love telling people how we built One-Eleven with our own hands."

We are so grateful for Justin's continued support of our program, it really makes a difference. –Coach Jamie Ortiz Rider says that his affiliation with the program has felt more like they sponsor One-Eleven and he is very "blessed" to have such a great group to be part of.

The One-Eleven Coastal concept was born in the San Clemente office of Spot 49, Inc. and was a product of the incredibly creative minds on that team. Lead by life-long local Bernie Wohlfarth, the Spot 49 marketing team is setting the bar for affordable and effective local marketing. Their logo isn't on everything they do, but it doesn't take long to recognize the mark they've left on many local businesses. From branding to websites, social media to e-mail marketing — we owe much of our success to the collaborative way that Spot 49 immersed themselves in our One-Eleven family.

John Merlino is a "who's who" of the culinary world. For many years he has been the brains and creativity behind some of the most prominent steak houses and corporate restaurants in America. You can imagine how lucky we were to have been able to solicit his advice and participate as he instilled his magic in the kitchen at One-Eleven. John has a new venture now —we have been lucky enough to test pilot with him: The Soul Patty! John has poured his heart and soul (and thousands of hours of experience) into this new concept. Ask for it by name; you will be glad you did.

The design and structure of a restaurant is paramount to its success. Enter Dave Donaldson. Dave is a familiar face on Del Mar as the original proprietor of the BeachFire. With proven success behind him, Dave has reinvented himself as a skilled consultant and restaurant broker. He has worked tirelessly to help with various aspects of the business at OneEleven Coastal. Dave's in-depth knowledge of the food and beverage industry makes him a valuable asset.

s a Sports Medicine Primary Care physician, Arturo Aguilar, M.D. enjoys building relationships with his patients and empowering them to take hold of their own health. He helps them recognize that they are the captain of their own well-being and believes that it is his job as their physician to act as the navigator. Due to his strong interest in athletics, Dr. Aguilar is board-certified in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. He specializes in training and preventing sports-related illness and injury.

SPORTS MEDICINE PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN

I get the most satisfaction out of helping patients navigate the different circumstances of their life, such as injury, illness and making healthy lifestyle choices. - Arturo Aguilar, M.D.

While Sports Medicine specialists do cater to athletes, they are also an excellent resource for individuals who wish to become active or would like to start a new exercise program. MemorialCare Medical Group specialists help to heal primary matters related to physical activity, such as osteoarthritis, fractures, concussion, sports nutrition, exercise prescription, exercise induced asthma and strains in the shoulder, knee, hip, foot/ ankle, or elbow/hand. They also perform Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections using ultrasound-guided technology. PRP is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve cell signaling and promote healing for orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions. The PRP is injected directly into the injured body part to augment the healing process. As a Sports Medicine Primary Care physician with MemorialCare Medical Group, Dr. Aguilar works diligently with his patients to help each of them perform to their full potential. By making recommendations and walking his patients through their health issues, he strives to guide them towards a happy and healthy life.

LAURA MILLER

For all the wrong reasons, after a stressful day’s work at Ohio Bell, I attended night classes at the downtown campus of Cleveland State University. I had to hurry from my last class at 10 pm to a bus stop in a nefarious part of town; my last chance to return to my home in the safety of the suburbs. I have many stories about this bus stop and rides on that bus. Here is one of them.

Waiting for the Late Bus As a Storm Threatens (A poetically embellished true story)

He passes so close my breath involuntarily halts so that I do not inhale the disease of his scent. Raging headwaters of decay pour from unplumbed chasms deep in his reeking core. Muttering and weaving, he moves on, but just when I think I am safe, he stops, as though he recognizes me then turns back. Defiantly, he strides toward me. An open and filthy raincoat flaps around his knees in a whirlwind of haste and the quickening storm. A brick wall at my back, the dark churning Universe that is him closing in before me. I am trapped and afraid. His mouth, a gaping hole framed by cracked lips and strings of phlegm, twists into a snarl. “Jezebel,” he screams, pointing a long sharp-nailed finger. “Harlot who lays with kings and beggars.” We are now eye to eye. He is rocking, I am frozen. We stand toe to toe in the now silent gale-haunted night. Moments that seem hours pass.

I force myself to meet his yellowed rheumy eyes and see fires of madness where fires of love should burn. I see a lifetime of tears evaporating in the flames. I recoil from the filth, derangement, threats of violence. I wonder, what does he see when he looks at me? I am no longer afraid. Was his mouth ever the taste that someone longed for? Have those lips ever shared the sweet communion of a tender kiss that sealed a pledge? Has that snarl ever been a heart melting smile? Who broke this heart and mind? What forgotten promise led him to this moment? What howling tempest blew out his light? What Spirit sent me here? The wind picks up, street trash swirls around us. Lightening flashes and in the thunder, I hear a voice, “This is my beloved son. See him. Hear him. Love him.” He steps beside me very still, looking down. It begins to rain. My bus pulls up, the doors wheeze open. Wet, cold and trembling, I step on and find a seat. Beyond my reflection in the window I see him pacing, ranting, alone in the worsening storm.

SC HEALTH For most everyone, achieving good dental health is a conscious decision. However, our oral care routine can sometimes be done in an unconscious manner. Some of us can probably brush our teeth with our eyes closed and be half asleep. Flossing fits under the conscious part of our routine and is not second nature for many. How about regular dental checkups? These require some conscious decision-making as well. Even though a visit to your dentist can be an anxiety-producing event, not making the time or the effort for these appointments can leave a gap (no pun intended) in trying to achieve good oral health. One way to allay any anxiety is to be informed. When it comes to health, ignorance should not be bliss. More and more, we need to be informed patients to help us make the best decisions and feel comfortable with them.

Why do I have a problem when I have regular checkups and dental cleanings?

You are done with your dental X-rays, exam, and cleaning and your dentist recommends some work to be done. A concern I oftentimes hear from patients is that they get their teeth cleaned regularly with checkups and don’t understand why they still need to have dental work such as a filling or a crown. What did they do wrong? To explain, regular maintenance with dental cleanings does not prevent your teeth from breaking down from decay or wear over time. Dental cleanings are mainly meant to maintain the health of the gums and jaw bone. The gums and the jaw bone are important in that they serve as the anchors to our teeth. Without healthy

gums and bone, our teeth would get loose and fall out. On the other hand, a filling or a crown is to repair damage (e.g. decay or fracture) to a tooth. Regular dental exams with dental x-rays determine if there is new decay, broken fillings or other problems brewing that need to be fixed right away.

I use mouthwash everyday, does this help?

In a word — no. Mouthwashes are our ever-persistent fantasy of dental care in a bottle. They do some things like make your breath fresh (for a short while) and give your mouth that burning feeling making you think that germs must have been killed in there. Sorry to burst your bubble, but nothing can replace the good ol’ toothbrush, toothpaste (fluoride) and floss.

KIDS CLUB

Great Futures Start Here... One of the best parts for the children attending the Boys & Girls Club in San Clemente is that it remains a place where a kid can still be a kid. And mostly without the interference of the 24/7 connectedness to electronics, social media, the outside world of go, go, go, and the complicated place where everyone needs to succeed and is afraid to fail. Once you arrive and check-in at the front desk, it’s off to grab a snack with a couple of friends from school, see your group leader for the day and head off into a world that is not overly planned or scheduled. If you’re interested in just chilling for a bit, that’s cool, pick a spot and go for it. Play ball if you want to, go in the art

room, participate in a fun game or daily contest, but do so at your leisure. Sure, you’ll be strongly encouraged to step into the learning center to complete some homework, and for certain members on the Club’s “homework watch list,” they are going to get a little extra encouragement. But for the most part the Boys & Girls Club, located in the heart of the city in Bonita Canyon Park off of El Camino, is a melting pot of children from in and around our city and it remains simple and uncomplicated. The staff is there to keep you safe, help guide you into activities, develop a bond with you during your time there, but they’re not there to hold your hand and be your parachute to give you a soft landing at every turn. You’re going to participate in things and your team is going to lose. You are not going to get a trophy just for showing up. You’re going to play pool or ping-pong against someone who is better than you. You’re going to build character and be a part of a place where you feel like you belong and have some influence. In a recent tour of the Club with the cur-

rent CEO Terry Hughes, who’s been at the helm since late 2017, it’s clear that the members enjoy themselves, are having plenty of fun and that the areas are supervised with dynamic, warm individuals who enjoy interacting with the kids. “We employ a mix of older High School and College Students, many of whom grew up here in this setting, along with some adults and full-time professionals who have chosen this as a career which forms a team of leaders who have many different interests and that’s a benefit to everyone. The more they can be exposed to, the better. We try very hard to encourage the children to do a wide variety of activities and we always hope to make a connection with every single child.” Mr. Hughes cited the increased average daily attendance and membership numbers to go along with survey results and parental feedback which have been positive. He said, “we’re always trying to stay current and improve upon what we do, and in today’s world, families have many choices. We are willing to work very hard to gain their trust and are proud that so

www.southcoastmagazine.com

many families are willing to trust us with the children.” In 2018, the Club served almost 2,000 school aged children after school, during the vacations and summer months, and through sports leagues. The Club remains a great value for families. During the school year membership is less than $100 and includes free snacks and meals over the entire school year, after-school program, and summer camp is $65 per week for families who register in time. And, they are always willing to work with families with payment plans or discounts for families who do not have the ability to pay. Some of the Clubs signature programs are College Bound which focuses on helping first generation students gain college acceptance with financial aid packages, Torch & Keystone Clubs which focus on leadership opportunities through civic engagement and the Youth Sports leagues in basketball, volleyball, soccer and baseball. If you’ve got kids, the Boys & Girls Club has something for you. Stop in or go check them out at www.bgcsca.org.

SUMMER CAMP

Join our eSports Camps this summer at Golden West College. eSports Elites Academy offers camps in Fortnite, Overwatch, and League of Legends. Each eSports Camp week incorporates training in safe practices and schedule optimization, skill development, gameplay, and competitions, which provides a solution for kids and teens who are playing eSports and can benefit from learning how to do so responsibly. Each camp offers a true gamer experience with gamer-level computers and headsets. Campers learn how to improve their skills individually and work in teams, boosting their overall game sense and abilities as players. Team

work is a very important component of each camp, and campers learn how to become effective teammates and leaders. Teamwork can sometimes determine a win or a loss in eSports.

Week In Play

The goal for the week is to establish team building and communication. While assisting and improving players in game abilities, we want to introduce each individual player to a lesser seen side of the gaming community. Each player will get to learn what it’s like behind the scenes, what it

takes to have competitive game play or casual online streaming, and the core fundamentals of a positive eSports community. Each player will be taught how to promote a welcoming environment full of positivity and support.

SC KIDS

s p i T FOR BUILDING CONFIDENT, EAGER READERS

Reading is the foundation for all learning and essential for school success. As children progress through school, it's important to continue to build their reading abilities. ''Reading confidence comes with continued practice,'' says Emma Villamizar of the Laguna Niguel Huntington Learning Center. How can parents help build their children into confident, eager readers?

1. WORK ON VOCABULARY.

Nothing will frustrate a child while reading more than encountering lots of unfamiliar words. Request vocabulary lists from your child’s teacher and work with your child every night on reviewing those words. When reading, encourage your child to keep a dictionary nearby to look up unknown words.

2. FOCUS ON THE BUILDING BLOCKS.

At a very early age, children learn phonemic awareness— that words are composed of different sounds, which form words and other sounds—and phonics—letter sounds, the relationship between letters and sounds, and decoding words. But as they move into more challenging texts, fluency and comprehension become the focus. You can help by continuing to read aloud with your children and encouraging your child to do the following while reading: think through the plot and structure of a story, pause to confirm understanding (and ask questions/ search for answers) and discuss ideas. 42 | S Magazine

3. MAKE DAILY TIME FOR READING.

Practice makes improvement when it comes to reading. Remember to make it an enjoyable activity as well rather than a “have to” that your child feels forced to do.

4. ENCOURAGE GOAL SETTING.

Goal setting is valuable because it gives children something to work toward and can serve as a motivator. Think about fun ways you can encourage the reading habit by setting goals. Maybe you plan an ice cream outing to talk about every new book your child finishes. Maybe you read a book together and set page goals for each week, then talk about what you’ve read at the dinner table.

Why Is My Child Struggling With Writing Too?

If your child struggles with reading, chances are that writing skills are affected as well. For effective writing your child needs rich vocabulary, correct spelling and grammar, proper sentence

structure and punctuation among other skills. These come easier if your child has a strong reading foundation.

How Huntington Helps:

Reading is important for school and life. If you know your child is struggling with reading and you’re not sure how to help, call Huntington. We will uncover the root of the problem and develop a customized learning program that will help your child strengthen those reading skills, regain his or her confidence and learn to enjoy reading. Remember, the Summer Slide is real. Use the time to build skills in Reading Comprehension, Writing, Math and Study Skills instead of falling further behind.
