Setting the Stage for Success

OC PARENTS (AND KIDS!) AGREE: ACTING ACADEMY FOR KIDS BUILDS CONFIDENCE, DEVELOPS LIFE SKILLS AND FOSTERS LASTING FRIENDSHIPS

Acting Academy for Kids has been a wonderful place for my son to learn and grow into a strong, confident adolescent. AA4K has helped him feel comfortable speaking in front of others and explore his creativity. – Lindy Flowers, Mission Viejo

BY JENNIFER BENSON

Whether a child’s dream is to be on stage or behind the camera, a doctor or an engineer, many Orange County parents and students point to Acting Academy for Kids as a place to foster life’s essential skills. Confidence, public speaking, creative thinking, discipline and teamwork, to name a few.

A Foundation to Last a Lifetime

Founded in 2007 by husband and wife team Stephen and Maggie Zygo, AA4K has grown from a youth musical theater start-up to a leader in the Orange County performing arts community. To-date, AA4K has brought the performing arts aspirations of more than 10,000 local youth to life on stage, on film, and behind the lights and cameras. This success is no accident. Both Stephen and Maggie hold Master’s Degrees in teaching, and Stephen has a degree in Musical Theater Performance. During a decade of rapid growth, AA4K has expanded to meet growing demand, but has never lost its personal touch.

The organization and communication are unmatchable, which is a huge blessing. The staff is very personable, great at what they do, and goes the extra mile. – Shannon S. of Riverside in one Yelp review

Our two daughters have participated in multiple AA4K musical theatre offerings, and their experiences have been amazing.Their dedicated staff is organized, caring and patient, and is committed to developing confidence, self-esteem and team work. – Ryan Vogt-Lowell, Aliso Viejo

I’m always impressed with how much fun the kids have during a week with AA4K. So many smiles, new friends and new acting skills! – Galen Corbett, San Juan Capistrano Musical Theater Multiple Locations

AA4K has three convenient locations: the historic Cabrillo Playhouse in San Clemente, the Community Roots Academy in Laguna Niguel and the state-ofthe art, 20,000-square-foot OC Music & Dance Theater, which shares a building with the Pacific Symphony in Irvine.

Love this place — the teachers are amazing and nurturing. My six-year-old started with summer camps three years ago and now, after more than four musicals, three recitals and piano lessons, would go every day if I let her! – Kelly Uygan, Ladera Ranch Summer Camps

AA4K’s summer camps are a great way to learn new skills, expand talents and meet new friends. Open to children ages 4-14 years old, each week-long program offers a mix of acting, singing and dance, culminating in a Friday afternoon performance. This year’s line-up includes The Greatest Showman, Mary Poppins Returns, Aladdin’s Magic Lamp, Annie and Harry Potter.

The centerpiece of AA4K is its musical theater program. Every Fall, Winter and Spring, multiple casts—each with no more than 30 actors—embark on a threemonth, intensive journey to bring a well-known musical to life. Here, students get to shine on stage and learn everything that goes on behind the scenes as well. This spring, young performers are invited to “come and build a snowman” with the Orange County premiere of Disney’s FROZEN.

AA4K Studios: For Kids & Teens Everyone loves the stage, but there’s a little something called “film” as well. AA4K Studios is a film conservatory where kids and teens ages 7-18 gain first-hand experience both in front of and behind the camera. Each student writes, shoots, directs, acts and assistant-edits their own short film. Their big screen debuts are showcased at an end-of-season premiere gala, where friends, families and fellow film lovers can watch their creative talents come to life on the big screen. While the focus on this program is educational, each student gets a professional reel with their work and earns official IMBD credit.

Private Lessons: Vocal & Piano

For students eager to take their skills to the next level, oneon-one guidance and professional training is available. Acting Academy for Kids offers private lessons and coaching for voice and piano to help students learn new skills and hone their existing talents.

A Steadfast Commitment: In Sickness and in Health

As many are aware, the success of Acting Academy for Kids has been an achievement to celebrate, but also filled with challenging moments where the lesson continues to be “always keep the faith.” While nine months pregnant with their second child, Maggie underwent a surgical biopsy on her neck. On the day she gave birth, she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma—an untreatable and incurable cancer. After considerable introspection

ActingAcademyForKids.com Advertising Information / 949.498.0705

and prayer, the Zygos made a decision to not only keep Acting Academy for Kids alive, but to make sure it thrived, setting an example for every child to never give up on your dreams, always follow your passion and light up the world with your gifts—no matter what. Every day, they are rewarded by the joy and pride the feel when they see students grow and thrive under their leadership.

Acting Academy for Kids plays a major role in my life. I have met wonderful life friends and have developed great acting skills. It’s a huge comfort zone for me and lets me have fun. I am very thankful for AA4K! – Ryder Flowers, Age 11 To learn more about Acting Academy for Kids or register for Summer Camps or private lessons, log on to www.actingacademyforkids.com or send an email to actingacademy4kids@gmail.com.

CAPO KIDS

s Ti pFOR BUILDING CONFIDENT, EAGER READERS

Reading is the foundation for all learning and essential for school success. As children progress through school, it's important to continue to build their reading abilities. ''Reading confidence comes with continued practice,'' says Emma Villamizar of the Laguna Niguel Huntington Learning Center. How can parents help build their children into confident, eager readers?

1. WORK ON VOCABULARY.

Nothing will frustrate a child while reading more than encountering lots of unfamiliar words. Request vocabulary lists from your child’s teacher and work with your child every night on reviewing those words. When reading, encourage your child to keep a dictionary nearby to look up unknown words.

2. FOCUS ON THE BUILDING BLOCKS.

At a very early age, children learn phonemic awareness— that words are composed of different sounds, which form words and other sounds—and phonics—letter sounds, the relationship between letters and sounds, and decoding words. But as they move into more challenging texts, fluency and comprehension become the focus. You can help by continuing to read aloud with your children and encouraging your child to do the following while reading: think through the plot and structure of a story, pause to confirm understanding (and ask questions/search for answers) and discuss ideas. 18 | Capo Life Magazine

3. MAKE DAILY TIME FOR READING.

Practice makes improvement when it comes to reading. Remember to make it an enjoyable activity as well rather than a “have to” that your child feels forced to do.

4. ENCOURAGE GOAL SETTING.

Goal setting is valuable because it gives children something to work toward and can serve as a motivator. Think about fun ways you can encourage the reading habit by setting goals. Maybe you plan an ice cream outing to talk about every new book your child finishes. Maybe you read a book together and set page goals for each week, then talk about what you’ve read at the dinner table.

Why Is My Child Struggling With Writing Too?

If your child struggles with reading, chances are that writing skills are affected as well. For effective writing your child needs rich vocabulary, correct spelling and grammar, proper sentence structure and punctuation

among other skills. These come easier if your child has a strong reading foundation.

How Huntington Helps:

Reading is important for school and life. If you know your child is struggling with reading and you’re not sure how to help, call Huntington. We will uncover the root of the problem and develop a customized learning program that will help your child strengthen those reading skills, regain his or her confidence and learn to enjoy reading. Remember, the Summer Slide is real. Use the time to build skills in Reading Comprehension, Writing, Math and Study Skills instead of falling further behind. To learn more about the Huntington program, please schedule an academic evaluation (949) 339-1001. www.huntingtonhelps.com/ center/laguna-niguel
