CAPO KIDS

s Ti pFOR BUILDING CONFIDENT, EAGER READERS

Reading is the foundation for all learning and essential for school success. As children progress through school, it's important to continue to build their reading abilities. ''Reading confidence comes with continued practice,'' says Emma Villamizar of the Laguna Niguel Huntington Learning Center. How can parents help build their children into confident, eager readers?

1. WORK ON VOCABULARY.

Nothing will frustrate a child while reading more than encountering lots of unfamiliar words. Request vocabulary lists from your child’s teacher and work with your child every night on reviewing those words. When reading, encourage your child to keep a dictionary nearby to look up unknown words.

2. FOCUS ON THE BUILDING BLOCKS.

At a very early age, children learn phonemic awareness— that words are composed of different sounds, which form words and other sounds—and phonics—letter sounds, the relationship between letters and sounds, and decoding words. But as they move into more challenging texts, fluency and comprehension become the focus. You can help by continuing to read aloud with your children and encouraging your child to do the following while reading: think through the plot and structure of a story, pause to confirm understanding (and ask questions/search for answers) and discuss ideas. 8 | Capo Life Magazine

3. MAKE DAILY TIME FOR READING.

Practice makes improvement when it comes to reading. Remember to make it an enjoyable activity as well rather than a “have to” that your child feels forced to do.

4. ENCOURAGE GOAL SETTING.

Goal setting is valuable because it gives children something to work toward and can serve as a motivator. Think about fun ways you can encourage the reading habit by setting goals. Maybe you plan an ice cream outing to talk about every new book your child finishes. Maybe you read a book together and set page goals for each week, then talk about what you’ve read at the dinner table.

Why Is My Child Struggling With Writing Too?

If your child struggles with reading, chances are that writing skills are affected as well. For effective writing your child needs rich vocabulary, correct spelling and grammar, proper sentence structure and punctuation

among other skills. These come easier if your child has a strong reading foundation.

How Huntington Helps:

Reading is important for school and life. If you know your child is struggling with reading and you’re not sure how to help, call Huntington. We will uncover the root of the problem and develop a customized learning program that will help your child strengthen those reading skills, regain his or her confidence and learn to enjoy reading. Remember, the Summer Slide is real. Use the time to build skills in Reading Comprehension, Writing, Math and Study Skills instead of falling further behind. To learn more about the Huntington program, please schedule an academic evaluation (949) 339-1001. www.huntingtonhelps.com/ center/laguna-niguel

CUSD MESSAGE

Dear CUSD Families, Spring is here! Unbelievably, we are in the final few months of the 2018-2019 school year! Soon, our students will be counting down the last few school days in excited anticipation for summer break. Testing will be complete, grades will be finalized, and the end of another year will be here before we know it. I don’t know about you, but every year seems to go faster than the one before. In June, we will celebrate the graduation of the nearly 4,000 students.

In August, we will welcome brand new kindergarteners into our fullday kinder program, and our middle and high school students onto their new campuses. No matter their grade or their age, our priority is giving our students an outstanding education and opportunities to pursue a variety of options for their life after high school. I hope that all of you, our students and families, enjoy the rest of this school year and that you have the opportunity to take in all the

memories and activities this time of year brings. We are grateful for the opportunity to teach your children and we look forward to many more school years together. Sincerely, Kirsten Vital, Superintendent

P E D I AT R I C S Ian Bare, MD chose a career in medicine because he wanted to help people improve their lives. As a MemorialCare Medical Group physician, he treats patients at both the San Clemente and Rancho Mission Viejo health centers. Dr. Bare enjoys working with his patients and seeing them become empowered to make a difference in their own health. As a family medicine physician, he focuses on patient-centered and comprehensive care. Family practice gives me the opportunity to care for people at any stage of life, from infancy to adulthood. Dr. Bare was born and raised in South Orange County and graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 2001. From there, he completed both his internship and residency at Harbor UC Los Angeles Medical Center and finished his education in 2004. He began his employment at MemorialCare in 2005 as an Urgent Care provider. Today, Dr. Bare is board certified in family medicine and transitioned to the Rancho Mission Viejo health center in 2017. During his free time, Dr. Bare enjoys spending time with his family of four and participating in all kinds of outdoor activities. Some of his favorite pastimes include cycling and training for triathlons. He is devoted to his family and enjoys playing worship music at his church on the weekends. MemorialCare Medical Group 1300 Avenida Vista Hermosa, Suite 250 San Clemente (949) 542-7700

Bonnie Pittaluga, MD, chose a career in medicine because she wanted to combine her interest in science with her desire to help others. Board certified in pediatrics, she emphasizes prevention and education in her patient care, as she believes it is important to establish healthy habits in her patients when they are young. Dr. Pittaluga’s favorite aspect of the physician-patient relationship is developing lifelong relationships with her patients and their families, as well as watching the children grow from infancy to adolescence. She also loves working with parents and family members to improve the overall health of their children. I love working with children because I love watching them grow and experience their innocence, resilience and imagination. After completing her medical education at St. George’s University School of Medicine, West Indies, Dr. Pittaluga finished both her internship and residency at CHOC Children’s Hospital of Orange County. In her spare time, Dr. Pittaluga enjoys going to church, reading, hiking and spending time with her husband and two children as well as the family dog. Setting the Stage for Success

OC PARENTS (AND KIDS!) AGREE: ACTING ACADEMY FOR KIDS BUILDS CONFIDENCE, DEVELOPS LIFE SKILLS AND FOSTERS LASTING FRIENDSHIPS

Acting Academy for Kids is great for fostering friendships, learning how to be on a team and be flexible about taking on different roles. The team is energetic and vibrant, and my kids learned how to speak in front of large audiences. – Anik Rubalcava, Laguna Hills BY JENNIFER BENSON

If you’ve ever listened to an Academy Awards speech, there are many influential people the winners on stage thank each year. Parents for opening opportunities. Teachers who were the first to see potential. Enthusiastic audiences and fans who sent encouragement along the way. By the same token, if you’ve ever browsed through LinkedIn profiles, you’ll see plenty of thanks as well. Strong foundations for professional success—like teamwork, public speaking, discipline, commitment and cre ative thinking—don’t happen by accident. The “thanks” to those who helped build such a strong foundation for career success may be more behind-the-scenes than on big awards shows, but it shines through every achieve ment nonetheless. Whether a child’s dream is to be on stage or behind the camera, a doctor or an engineer, many Orange County parents and students point to Acting Academy for Kids as a place to foster life’s essential skills. Confidence, public speaking, networking, discipline and teamwork, to name a few.

has brought the performing arts aspirations of more than 10,000 local youth to life on stage, on film, and behind the lights and cameras. This success is no accident. Both Stephen and Maggie hold Master’s Degrees in teaching, and Stephen has a degree in Musical Theater Performance as well. During a decade of rapid growth, Acting Academy for Kids has expanded to meet growing demand, but has never lost its personal touch that makes every show, every relationship, feel like family.

Multiple Locations, One Orange County Institution

Acting Academy for Kids operates out of three convenient Orange County locations: the historic Cabrillo Playhouse in San Clemente, the Community Roots Academy in Laguna Niguel and the state-of-the art, 20,000-square-foot OC Music & Dance Theater, which shares a building with the Pacific Symphony in Irvine. As part of its mission to inspire a deeper appreciation of the arts among local youth, AA4K offers many opportunities to experience nearly every aspect of the theater experience, from summer camps and Jr. directing to vocals and acting.

Whether a child is a seasoned veteran or exploring new interests, Acting Academy for Kids’ summer performing arts camps are a great way to learn new skills, expand talents and meet new friends.

Open to children 4-14 years old, each weeklong program offers a mix of acting, singing and dance, culminating in a Friday afternoon performance open to parents and other cheering fans. This year’s line-up, which was just announced in February, includes such popular hits as The Greatest Showman, Mary Poppins Returns, Aladdin’s Magic Lamp, Annie and Harry Potter.

Musical Theater

The centerpiece of Acting Academy for Kids is its musical theater program. Every Fall, Winter and Spring, multiple casts—each with no more than 30 actors—embark on a three-month, intensive journey to bring a well-known musical to life.

From lighting and singing to choreography and costume design, students not only get to shine on stage, but they learn everything that goes on behind the scenes to make the show a success as well.

AA4K Studios: For Kids & Teens

Everyone loves the stage, but in today’s digital age, there’s a little something called “film” as well. AA4K Studios is a film conservatory where kids, tweens and teens ages 7-18 gain first-hand experience both in front of and be hind the camera. Each student writes, shoots, directs, acts and assistant-edits their own short film. Their big screen debuts are showcased at an exclusive, end-of-season premiere gala, where friends, families and fellow film lovers can watch their creative talents come to life.

TRIED and true DENTAL HABITS As a dentist, part of my job is to motivate and encourage patients towards good dental habits. However, for most patients, being told to brush and floss is not enough. Offering up alternative solutions, suggesting a change in one's dental routine at home, or simply reviewing the basic techniques with a mirror can make a difference in improving one’s oral health. Here are some things to consider to keep your teeth in tip-top shape:

1. The basics of brushing: Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush for at least two to three minutes twice a day. Really spend the time to get in there and reach all the spots. Don’t forget to focus on brushing close to the gumline where most food and bacterial dental plaque settle. Also, begin brushing the hardest-to-reach areas first (usually the very back and surfaces next to the tongue)—our attention is greatest at the beginning of a task and therefore this ensures that nothing gets missed. 2. Flossing requires time and patience. Most people report that they do not floss because they do not have the time. Make the time! If you can’t floss once a day (which is ideal), floss when you can and do it correctly. (Floss correctly by sliding it on the side surfaces of teeth and not just sliding it in between teeth.) Flossing really makes a difference in your overall dental health. 36 | Capo Life Magazine

You can even floss while watching television in your favorite chair. By the way, if you notice your gums bleeding from flossing, don’t stop. This bleeding is an indication of inflammation and could be present because you haven’t been flossing. The bleeding should subside and get better in about a week or so. Lastly, although these may not take the place of flossing, other tools can be useful to clean in between teeth also. These include speciallyshaped toothpicks (wooden or plastic) and small interdental brushes. Also consider an oral irrigation device that is designed to direct water between teeth. You’d be amazed at what it cleans out from between your teeth and lands in the sink bowl. Check out your local drugstore’s oral care section to see what’s available.

3. Be mindful of how certain food tex-

tures stick to teeth. Starchy foods tend to be chewy and get caught between the teeth and stick to the smooth surfaces more. Food that sits around your teeth and gums all day encourages more plaque buildup and a chance for cavities or gum disease to develop. Think about how a bowl of pasta would affect your teeth as opposed to a crunchy, crisp apple. Consider snacking on foods that “cleanse” our teeth. Coincidentally, these “cleansing” foods are also nutritionally good for you (e.g. apples, carrots, celery).

4.

Many of the things we do everyday can erode tooth enamel. Erosion of our enamel can cause teeth sensitivity and/or discoloration. We expose our

teeth to acid through certain foods we eat and beverages we drink. Beverages containing acid include citric juices, carbonated drinks, sports drinks, and even fizzy mineral water. Lessen the erosion of enamel by rinsing with water after your teeth have been exposed to acidic foods or beverages. Try sipping acidic drinks through a straw to minimize contact with the teeth. Also, wait at least one hour before brushing with a soft toothbrush after acid exposure to avoid further breakdown and wear of your enamel. Good oral health is mostly achieved by what you do at home on a daily basis. Take the steps to brush and floss correctly and do visit your dentist on a regular basis. My husband and I have a popular mantra at home, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” For dental health, this means, you can’t have healthy teeth without doing the work to get there.
