Ruth gave birth to Obed who gave birth to Jesse who fathered David. David like in David and Goliath. You know the kid who chooses off the entire Philistine army. Specifically the uncircumcised guy with the bad eyesight... AKA King David. Now, this is some heavy lifting pedigree from a lineal dissent perspective. This made Ruth the Great Grandmother of David; grandmother to Christ to the 29th power. Gloria, glory be to God in the highest. Glory being the operative word. Ruth Gloria is a glorious person. If everyone was like Ruth there would be no war or Trump versus Iran. We never saw Ruth impressed with this world. I've witnessed Ruth around gracious and humble millionaires and never saw her treat a busboy anything less than the manner she treated the gracious millionaires. A person would make one of the most ignorant statements, one that was socially impossible to imagine and Ruth's internal pulse may rise but externally the person speaking would never see any expression that may be construed as a response. Gloria the doxology beginning Gloria Partis used after Psalms and in a formal prayer (e.g. in the rosary) and Ruth named her child Rose Ruth Gloria and Rose — strength, and honor built in those names. And Ruth is the epitome of strength and honor as recently witnessed by all close to her life. Ruth Gloria Riley is my mother-in-law. And I listen to Ruth because she only speaks softly with a kindness, intellect, and knowledge and only when she knows exactly what she's speaking about. She's easy to listen to because Ruth never wears out your ears and does not waste her words. Ruth is 88 and can tell you where the next speed bump or pothole is three miles away from her home in Hemet, California. How many turns it is from her home to the Sizzler. We own part of a table there. Ruth is one of my lifetime dearest friends, a true woman of Christ. I just wanted Ruth to know how much I love her. DEAN’S MESSAGE The Regional Criminal Justice Training Center at Golden West College is an invaluable asset to the communities of Southern California and the State more broadly. The first college-based police academy program in the state to be certified by the California commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), the Center currently serves between 2,000 and 2,500 students per academic year, from all over the state. The Academy’s roots date back to 1955, when the FBI taught Orange County’s first academy class in the City of Orange. In 1960, the operation was turned over to the Coast Community College District, and in 1969, was relocated to the new campus of Golden West College. The Regional Criminal Justice Training Center is constantly reviewing programs and methods to better serve the California law enforcement community. The recently completed RCJTC complex enables us to include several new programs to our curriculum, as well as provide a training environment that allows instructional staff to administer state-of-the-art scenario training.

The Criminal Justice Training Center, a Regional Law Enforcement Training Facility, is deeply committed to the college’s mission to deliver high quality learning and learning related services to students and the community we serve. Our top priority is to provide educational, vocational and technical training that will lead to transfer to a university, specialized employment, or career advancement. All three (3) programs offered at the Criminal Justice Training Center are flexible to meet the constantly changing training needs of the law enforcement profession. These needs are established collectively and independently by Municipal, County and State law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, state certification standards for police officers, established and mandated by the State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), are constantly in transition to meet the ever-changing demands placed on law enforcement in the State of California. Set in a non-traditional matrix, the CJTC is divided into three major and complex programs, each having different and specific delivery requirements. Even though seemingly independent of each other, each program nevertheless has areas that are interwoven and inter-dependent with no one area more or less important than the other.
The Golden West College Criminal Justice Training Center is deeply committed to the College’s mission, “Student Success.” With an emphasis on student-centered instruction and problem-based learning, it is the Center’s top priority to provide educational, vocational and technical training that will lead to a transfer to a university, specialized employment or career enhancement in the criminal justice profession. The Center is committed to training peace officers and support personnel in the underlying philosophy of Community Oriented Policing, emphasizing principles of leadership, ethics, professional values, partnership development, problem-solving skills, tactical proficiency and communication. The training center offers the required classes leading to the Associate in Arts Degree and/or a Certificate of Achievement in the Criminal Justice field. • Students in this program have the opportunity to: • Earn an AA Degree
• Earn a Certificate of Achievement in Law Enforcement (Soon we will add 3 other certificate options in the Criminal Justice field.) • Earn transferable units for transfer to a four-year school to be applied towards a BS/BA Degree. • Enhance understanding necessary for career choices.
• Enhance skills & knowledge and/or educational mandates for use in seeking entry-level positions in Criminal Justice fields.
SHORT TERM COURSES
Courses within this program are for currently employed law enforcement personnel. Some of the courses in this program are P.O.S.T. mandated in-service Advanced Officer Training (AOT), or Continued Professional Training (CPT) and may be assignment specific or for general career growth. • Students in this program have the opportunity to: • Satisfy P.O.S.T. skills and knowledge mandates. • Meet P.O.S.T. mandated training requirements relative to certain assignments or promotions. • Prepare for specialized job assignments. • Prepare for promotional opportunities. Collectively the courses in these three programs validate the mission of the college. They not only provide educational opportunities for new college students but pre-service and in-service students alike. Meeting student needs for career placement, development, and advancement. In these programs the department performs a valuable service for the student as well as the community. Over the years, the Criminal Justice Training Center has maintained a reputation for excellence in instruction and in meeting the needs of its students as well as the Law Enforcement community, which make up its constituency. Teachers who were the first to see potential. Enthusiastic audiences and fans who sent encouragement along the way. By the same token, if you’ve ever browsed through LinkedIn profiles, you’ll see plenty of thanks as well. Strong foundations for professional success—like teamwork, public speaking, discipline, commitment and creative thinking—don’t happen by accident. The “thanks” to those who helped build such a strong foundation for career success may be more behind-the-scenes than on big awards shows, but it shines through every achievement nonetheless. Whether a child’s dream is to be on stage or behind the camera, a doctor or an engineer, many Orange County parents and students point to Acting Academy for Kids as a place to foster life’s essential skills. A Foundation to Last a Lifetime
Founded in 2007 by husband and wife team Stephen and Maggie Zygo, Acting Academy for Kids has grown from a youth musical theater startup to a leader in the Orange County performing arts community. To date, AA4K has brought the performing arts aspirations of more than 10,000 local youth to life on stage, on film, and behind the lights and cameras. This success is no accident. Both Stephen and Maggie hold Master’s Degrees in teaching, and Stephen has a degree in Musical Theater Performance as well. During a decade of rapid growth, Acting Academy for Kids has expanded to meet growing demand, but has never lost its personal touch that makes every show, every relationship, feel like family. “The organization and communication are unmatchable, which is a huge blessing,” says Shannon S. of Riverside in one Yelp review. “They are very personable, great at what they do, and go the extra mile.”
Multiple Locations, One Orange County Institution
Acting Academy for Kids operates out of three convenient Orange County lo-
cations: the historic Cabrillo Playhouse in San Clemente, the Community Roots Academy in Laguna Niguel and the state-of-the-art, 20,000-squarefoot OC Music & Dance Theater, which shares a building with the Pacific Symphony in Irvine. As part of its mission to inspire a deeper appreciation of the arts among local youth, AA4K offers many opportunities to experience nearly every aspect of the theater experience, from summer camps and Jr. directing to vocals and acting. “Love this place--the teachers are amazing and nurturing,” says Kelly Uygan of Ladera Ranch. “They offer a fantastic variety of programs. Realistic stage setting, plus production, costumes and props are professional and creative. My six-year-old started with summer camps three years ago and now, after more than four musicals, three recitals and piano lessons, would go there every day if I let her!”

“My daughter loves coming here every summer for an acting camp!" says Sasha Ackley from San Juan Capistrano. “Mr. Zygo makes it the best. She has done it now five years in a row and we are more than happy every time!” Open to children 4-14 years old, each week-long program offers a mix of acting, singing and dance, culminating in a Friday afternoon performance open to parents and other cheering fans. This year’s line-up, which was just announced in February, includes such popular hits as The Greatest Showman, Mary Poppins Returns, Aladdin’s Magic Lamp, Annie and Harry Potter. “I’m always impressed with how much fun the kids have during a week with Acting Academy for Kids,” says Galen Corbett of San Juan Capistrano. “So many smiles, new friends and new acting skills!”
Musical Theater
The centerpiece of Acting Academy for Kids is its musical theater program. Every Fall, Winter and Spring, multiple casts—each with no more than 30 actors—embark on a three-month, intensive journey to bring a well-known musical to life.

From lighting and singing to choreography and costume design, students not only get to shine on stage, but they learn everything that goes on behind the scenes to make the show a success as well. Auditions are held on the first day of class and everyone gets a role in each full-scale production. This spring, young performers are invited to “come and build a snowman” with the Orange County premiere of Disney’s FROZEN. Registrations are now open, with auditions beginning in early April and performances scheduled for June. “We have two daughters who have participated in multiple AA4K musical theatre offerings, and their experiences have been nothing short of amazing,” says Ryan Vogt-Lowell of Aliso Viejo. “Their professional and dedicated staff is organized, caring and patient throughout the entire process, and is genuinely committed to developing the children’s confidence, self-esteem and team working skills.” Twelve-year-old Macey Bernabe of Trabuco Canyon agrees, saying “Acting Academy for Kids taught me
really good acting techniques. The directors are the nicest ever and they are always there to help you whenever. They always have smiles on their faces, too!”

AA4K Studios: For Kids & Teens
For students eager to take their skills to the next level, one-on-one guidance and professional training is available. Acting Academy for Kids offers private lessons and coaching for voice and piano to help students learn new skills and hone their existing talents.
Everyone loves the stage, but in today’s digital age, there’s a little something called “film” as well. AA4K Studios is a film conservatory where kids, tweens and teens ages 7-18 gain first-hand experience both in front of and behind the camera. Each student writes, shoots, directs, acts and assistant-edits their own short film. Their big screen debuts are showcased at an exclusive, end-of-season premiere gala, where friends, families and fellow film lovers can watch their creative talents come to life on the big screen. While the focus on this program is educational, each student gets a professional reel with their work and earns official IMBD credit. This high-profile event is known to attract special guests, including the Mayor of San Juan Capistrano, Academy Award-nominated writers, recognized actors and other notable talents in the local and global arts community. “We just finished our first on-camera class at AA4K and absolutely loved it,” says Joi F. of Capistrano Beach in a Yelp review. “The class has an amazing teacher-to-student ratio and the kids get so much individual attention. We capped it off with a screening of the film at the Regency Theater in San Juan Capistrano. There were

A Steadfast Commitment: In Sickness and in Health
As many in the community are well aware, the success of Acting Academy for Kids has been an achievement to celebrate, but also filled with challenging moments where the lesson continues to be “always keep the faith.” While nine months pregnant with their second child, Maggie underwent a surgical biopsy on her neck. On the day she gave birth, she was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma — an untreatable and incurable cancer. After considerable introspection and prayer, the Zygos made a decision to not only keep Acting Academy for Kids alive, but to make sure it thrived.

putting kids first ISSAC CHARTER SCHOOL

If you have visited One-Eleven Coastal you may have noticed a bright smiling young lady that has a little more leeway to harass the boss.
Savannah Rider (Justin's daughter) has been the first face you see when you walk in on the weekend evenings since day one. Besides being the hostess, she takes great pride in the work being done at One-Eleven Coastal. "We have had the unique experience of working together. There are very few fathers who are fortunate enough to have that experience, and while it has its challenges sometimes, working with Savannah has brought an immense amount of joy and pride to my life. I can promise, there is no way I could be more proud." It was easy to see why Rider is so proud when we asked Savannah about her favorite part of working at One-Eleven Coastal, "Meeting the people and constantly learning about the community that I live and go to school in. I also take a lot of pride in telling our story. I love telling people how we built One-Eleven with our own hands."

Trung Tristan Truong, MD was drawn to the medical field because he comes from a large family of medical doctors. Once upon a time, a ten-year-old boy from Venice Beach set out on a bonding trip with his father to the East Coast. This innocuous road trip became the stuff dreams are made of, a jaunt that introduced a young boy to lobster rolls, and planted a seed that grew into what is now The Lobster Shack. Most of us can recall those palpable moments that define our life’s calling. Moments frozen in time where we remember every smell, every taste. That’s the impetus for The Lobster Shack, the newest eatery in Old Town San Clemente that adds West Coast flair to quintessential East Coast fare. New England transplants will be pleas-

The Lobster Shack’s brioche rolls are baked fresh daily with flour imported from back east to give it a light, airy texture. For all the wrong reasons, after a stressful day’s work at Ohio Bell, I attended night classes at the downtown campus of Cleveland State University. I had to hurry from my last class at 10 pm to a bus stop in a nefarious part of town; my last chance to return to my home in the safety of the suburbs. I have many stories about this bus stop and rides on that bus. Here is one of them.
Waiting for the Late Bus As a Storm Threatens (A poetically embellished true story)
He passes so close my breath involuntarily halts so that I do not inhale the disease of his scent. Raging headwaters of decay pour from unplumbed chasms deep in his reeking core. Muttering and weaving, he moves on, but just when I think I am safe, he stops, as though he recognizes me then turns back. Defiantly, he strides toward me. An open and filthy raincoat flaps around his knees in a whirlwind of haste and the quickening storm. A brick wall at my back, the dark churning Universe that is him closing in before me. I am trapped and afraid. His mouth, a gaping hole framed by cracked lips and strings of phlegm, twists into a snarl. “Jezebel,” he screams, pointing a long sharp-nailed finger. “Harlot who lays with kings and beggars.” We are now eye to eye. He is rocking, I am frozen. We stand toe to toe in the now silent gale-haunted night. Moments that seem hours pass.
I force myself to meet his yellowed rheumy eyes and see fires of madness where fires of love should burn. I see a lifetime of tears evaporating in the flames. I recoil from the filth, derangement, threats of violence. I wonder, what does he see when he looks at me? I am no longer afraid. Was his mouth ever the taste that someone longed for? Have those lips ever shared the sweet communion of a tender kiss that sealed a pledge? Has that snarl ever been a heart melting smile? Who broke this heart and mind? What forgotten promise led him to this moment? What howling tempest blew out his light? What Spirit sent me here? The wind picks up, street trash swirls around us. Lightening flashes and in the thunder, I hear a voice, “This is my beloved son. See him. Hear him. Love him.” He steps beside me very still, looking down. It begins to rain. My bus pulls up, the doors wheeze open. Wet, cold and trembling, I step on and find a seat. Beyond my reflection in the window I see him pacing, ranting, alone in the worsening storm.

Some of us can probably brush our teeth with our eyes closed and be half asleep. Flossing fits under the conscious part of our routine and is not second nature for many. How about regular dental checkups? These require some conscious decision-making as well. Even though a visit to your dentist can be an anxiety-producing event, not making the time or the effort for these appointments can leave a gap (no pun intended) in trying to achieve good oral health. One way to allay any anxiety is to be informed. When it comes to health, ignorance should not be bliss. More and more, we need to be informed patients to help us make the best decisions and feel comfortable with them.
Why do I have a problem when I have regular checkups and dental cleanings?
You are done with your dental X-rays, exam, and cleaning and your dentist recommends some work to be done. A concern I oftentimes hear from patients is that they get their teeth cleaned regularly with checkups and don’t understand why they still need to have dental work such as a filling or a crown. What did they do wrong? To explain, regular maintenance with dental cleanings does not prevent your teeth from breaking down from decay or wear over time. Dental cleanings are mainly meant to maintain the health of the gums and jaw bone. The gums and the jaw bone are important in that they serve as the anchors to our teeth. Without healthy
gums and bone, our teeth would get loose and fall out. On the other hand, a filling or a crown is to repair damage (e.g. decay or fracture) to a tooth. Regular dental exams with dental x-rays determine if there is new decay, broken fillings or other problems brewing that need to be fixed right away.
I use mouthwash everyday, does this help?
In a word — no. Mouthwashes are our ever-persistent fantasy of dental care in a bottle. They do some things like make your breath fresh (for a short while) and give your mouth that burning feeling making you think that germs must have been killed in there. Sorry to burst your bubble, but nothing can replace the good ol’ toothbrush, toothpaste (fluoride) and floss.

Great Futures Start Here... One of the best parts for the children attending the Boys & Girls Club in San Clemente is that it remains a place where a kid can still be a kid. And mostly without the interference of the 24/7 connectedness to electronics, social media, the outside world of go, go, go, and the complicated place where everyone needs to succeed and is afraid to fail. Once you arrive and check-in at the front desk, it’s off to grab a snack with a couple of friends from school, see your group leader for the day and head off into a world that is not overly planned or scheduled. If you’re interested in just chilling for a bit, that’s cool, pick a spot and go for it. Play ball if you want to, go in the art

room, participate in a fun game or daily contest, but do so at your leisure. Sure, you’ll be strongly encouraged to step into the learning center to complete some homework, and for certain members on the Club’s “homework watch list,” they are going to get a little extra encouragement. But for the most part the Boys & Girls Club, located in the heart of the city in Bonita Canyon Park off of El Camino, is a melting pot of children from in and around our city and it remains simple and uncomplicated. The staff is there to keep you safe, help guide you into activities, develop a bond with you during your time there, but they’re not there to hold your hand and be your parachute to give you a soft landing at every turn. You’re going to participate in things and your team is going to lose. You are not going to get a trophy just for showing up. You’re going to play pool or ping-pong against someone who is better than you. You’re going to build character and be a part of a place where you feel like you belong and have some influence. In a recent tour of the Club with the cur-
rent CEO Terry Hughes, who’s been at the helm since late 2017, it’s clear that the members enjoy themselves, are having plenty of fun and that the areas are supervised with dynamic, warm individuals who enjoy interacting with the kids. “We employ a mix of older High School and College Students, many of whom grew up here in this setting, along with some adults and full-time professionals who have chosen this as a career which forms a team of leaders who have many different interests and that’s a benefit to everyone. The more they can be exposed to, the better. We try very hard to encourage the children to do a wide variety of activities and we always hope to make a connection with every single child.” Mr. Hughes cited the increased average daily attendance and membership numbers to go along with survey results and parental feedback which have been positive. He said, “we’re always trying to stay current and improve upon what we do, and in today’s world, families have many choices. We are willing to work very hard to gain their trust and are proud that so

many families are willing to trust us with the children.” In 2018, the Club served almost 2,000 school aged children after school, during the vacations and summer months, and through sports leagues. The Club remains a great value for families. During the school year membership is less than $100 and includes free snacks and meals over the entire school year, after-school program, and summer camp is $65 per week for families who register in time. And, they are always willing to work with families with payment plans or discounts for families who do not have the ability to pay. Some of the Clubs signature programs are College Bound which focuses on helping first generation students gain college acceptance with financial aid packages, Torch & Keystone Clubs which focus on leadership opportunities through civic engagement and the Youth Sports leagues in basketball, volleyball, soccer and baseball.
